LIFE AND LEISURE LIBERTY LIBRARY 226-3713 • Bldg 907

CAFFEINATED COLORING A buzz of warm conversation fills the Liberty Library on the first Thursday of each month. The library’s Coloring & Coffee Klatch event is geared towards adults (18+) looking to reduce stress and spend time with friends – new and old. Adult coloring books have been around for ages, but didn’t burst into popularity until Scottish illustrator, Johanna Basford, transformed them into a thing of beauty. When people were done with them they could set them on their coffee table as talking pieces. Even better, these not-your-kid’s-coloring books have brought adults together in the form of coloring clubs. The pop-up clubs have shown up across the globe – in public and private capacities – and our Liberty Library has hopped on the trend. “I stopped by today because I wanted some adult conversation and to relax,” said Julie, a school teacher. “I haven’t colored since I was a kid!” Tracy Mumford may have said it best in a piece she put together for Minnesota Public Radio: “Pass the colored pencils, kiddoes: Grown-ups have muscled in on the fun.” Catch the next Coloring & Coffee Klatch on Thursday, August 3 at 4:30pm. All materials – including coffee, tea and snacks – are provided by the library. It’s FREE!

OUTDOOR RECREATION 226-2146 • Bldg 1109

Studies have proven that spending time outdoors has a positive impact on the mind and body. Here in the U.K., there are a host of activities available to those seeking an active lifestyle; from cycling along a rugged coastline to climbing a mountain and gazing across a spectacular rolling landscape. Need some equipment to help get you moving? Stop by ODR. We have what you need to get started – from bike tune-ups to bouncy castle rentals. Need a little more incentive to get outside? Here are a few reasons. Nature offers memorypromoting effects – In a University of Michigan study, students were given memory tests before and after taking a walk outside.

The study found that the students who walked around an arboretum improved their test scores by nearly 20 percent compared to the group who took a walk down a city street. A similar study found that individuals suffering from depression showed increases in mood after a nature walk. The great outdoors helps eliminate mental fatigue – Ever had that feeling where your mind is spinning and you can’t clear your head? Head outside! One study found that mental energy bounces back after being exposed to restorative environments (like nature!). Just looking at pictures of nature had a positive effect, but the real thing is even better.
