in the SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31 FAMILY BOWLING: 6-9PM LATE NIGHT BOWLING: 10PM-1AM Looking for the perfect way to ring in the new year? Liberty Lanes has you covered! Be here when the clock STRIKES Midnight for the biggest bowling event of the year! There will be food, favors, prizes and of course, bowling! We will kick off the evening with a family-friendly event where people of all ages can roll into the new year ... a little early! Our new graphics and games system will make this evening of festive fun even more entertaining with its built-in camera function and interactive features. Our early event ends at 9pm, giving families a chance to get home for the midnight countdown. At 10pm, our late night event kicks off. The neon lights will be turned up and DJ Ant will be spinning the latest jams as we countdown to the new year. Get a group of friends together or meet new ones here! Our Lane Chatter function allows bowlers to send messages to other lanes. Who knows, you might even find someone to kiss at midnight! Both events sold out last year, so book your lanes now! Each event is just $15/bowler or $50/lane. Full payment must be made at the time of the reservation.

New Year, New You Don’t want to wait until New Years to get some great gear? Go to the pro shop located inside of the bowling alley. They have equipment and services readily available to suit all of your needs. If you’re a beginner or just starting to get more serious about bowling, then you may know how important it is to own your own equipment. For starters, it saves you money in the long run. The continuing cost of renting shoes will add up to the cost of owning your own in no time. Not only that, but owning your own ball or gloves really gives you more control of your game; you can prevent injuries and deliver the ball more precisely. Check with our knowledgeable staff to discuss what will best suit your needs.

HOW TO FIX THAT SLICE Get the abnormal spin off of your shot with tips from Dean In this month’s article Dean will be concentrating on how to fix that slice, a frustrating shot that can be difficult to get under control. However, these three tips plus two teaching drills will help you eliminate it from your game.

1 GRIP A good golf grip is key when starting to fix that slice. Oftentimes slicers have their hands in a weak position (see photo 1). I recommend a grip (see photo 2) with 3 knuckles visible out of your left eye and your right hand positioned slightly under the club. This will help you strengthen your clubface which is the first step to fixing that slice!!

2 ALIGNMENT A common issue that I see with people who slice is that they are aiming their feet too far left. Need an easy way to check your stance? Place a golf club along your foot line, then step back and check your alignment. If it’s angled too far to the left of your target, make a change so that your foot line points at the target,

3 CLUB PATH

PRACTICE

The main cause of a slice is the path of your downswing. For new and amateur golfers, it is common to hit the ball with an outside to inside club path, essentially meaning that your club is taking the wrong route to the ball. However, with a little practice (and the drills outlined below), you can reverse this pattern to create an inside to outside club path and slay that slice for good!

16

DRILL 1 Take the headcover off of your driver and place it to the right of the golf ball (photo 3). Practice swinging your club and focus on missing the headcover. By doing so, you are creating an in to out club path, the first step to having control of your golf.

LAKENHEATHFSS.COM | atEase

DRILL 2 This is a teaching drill I call high to low. It is best done without a golf ball so that you can learn the feeling without feeling the pressure to hit the target. First, place your headcover 12 inches directly behind the golf ball. As you swing back, your clubhead will need to miss the headcover to the right. As you swing down, your club will need to miss the headcover to the left. Together, these strokes create the desired clubpath.

Birthday Bucket of Balls • FREE

Is your birthday in December? Stop by Breckland Pines on the third Saturday of the month for your free bucket of range balls!

STROKE SAVER Hole 2: A long par 4 with trees all the way up the right side of the fairway

I always take a driver off the tee for this hole, aiming down the left side of the fairway as I have far more room to play with than the tree-lined right side. With the second shot you have a choice to make, either go for the green or layup just short of the brilliantly designed fairway bunker laying 30 yards short of the green. I recommend laying up if you have more than 200 yards for your second shot as, like the first hole, there are greenside bunkers left and right of the green ready to eat your ball up! With a two tier green things don’t get easier as you get closer to the hole. As this is one of the more difficult holes on the Breckland Pines layout, if you score a 5 on this one, you’re in good shape!

A&FRC AIRMAN & FAMILY READINESS CENTER 226-3847 • Bldg 950 atEase| |DECEMBER DECEMBER2017 2017 21 atEase 21

Queen Elizabeth I of England had gingerbread cookies molded into the shapes of her favorite courtiers. Congratulations to Stephanie Valentin for winning our first-annual holiday cookie recipe contest! Stephanie's recipe for her Soft Pumpkin & Raisin Ginger Cookies is filled with warm fall spices and is perfectly soft on the inside with slightly crisp edges. For her winning recipe, she went home with a Martha Stewart Baking Set. “This recipe all started after my husband came home from work and mentioned his newest Airman was vegan and couldn’t partake in my weekly batch of chocolate chip cookies. I was feeling bad he couldn’t enjoy a home baked treat so I started hunting for vegan cookie recipes. I began to experiment with adding and substituting ingredients to a pumpkin cookie recipe. After several batches, my family and friends helped me to fine tune my new favorite recipe." -Stephanie

Soft Pumpkin & Raisin Ginger Cookies Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 8-10 min Servings: 4-5 dozen | Vegan

Ingredients 3/4 c. vegan margarine softened 1/2 c. granulated sugar 1/2 c. light or dark brown sugar 1/4 c. pumpkin purée (not pie filling) 1/4 c. molasses 1/2-1 c. raisins (depending on preference) 2-1/4 c. all-purpose flour 2 tsp. ground ginger 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. salt Additional sugar for rolling

Directions • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. • In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together the margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. • Add the pumpkins purée and molasses, mix until well incorporated. • Combine dry ingredients, whisk together before adding to wet mixture. • Use a spoon or cookie scoop, place dough directly into a bowl of sugar, roll into balls, coating with the sugar. • Flatten balls slightly once placed into baking sheet. • Bake approximately 8-10 minutes, they will start to form cracks on the top. • They will be soft so let them cool on the baking sheet until they firm up a bit. • Remove with a spatula, place on cooling rack until set.

¹ The Medieval History of the Christmas Cookie, History.com

Cookie Drive Aims to Bring a Taste of Home to Airmen From spicy ginger snaps and crunchy biscotti to versatile spritz and icing-laced sugar, cookies represent a delicious holiday tradition that has been around for centuries. In the Middle Ages, spices including nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper were making their way into the mainstream along with ingredients such as sugar, lard and butter.¹ However, such delicacies didn’t come cheap and families would save up to purchase them for special occasions. A batch of cookies was much easier to share with friends and neighbors than a cake or a pie would have been, so the tradition began and continues today. While we are no longer in Medieval Times and traditional holiday flavors such as cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are readily available at our local Sainsbury’s, we still have many dorm residents at RAF Lakenheath who will not be munching on homemade gingerbread cookies this season … without your help. The Holiday Airmen Cookie Drive was developed in support of our Liberty Airmen living in the dorms who are missing a taste of home. Presented by Page Community Center with the support of the Liberty Spouses Association, the 2017 Holiday Airmen Cookie Drive is accepting holiday homemade cookie donations (no nuts please) on December 11th and 12th. Our team of elves will then deliver the cookies to the dormitories on the 13th!

Help spread the holiday cheer to our dorm residents by donating homemade holiday cookies (no nuts please). Drop Off Location: Eagles' Landing Drop Off Dates: December 11-12, 2017 Monday, December 11, 2017 • 7am - 2pm • 4pm-6pm Tuesday, December 12, 2017 • 7am – 2pm atEase | DECEMBER 2017

Getting to know Nashville pop artist and songwriter, Danika Portz, before her performance at RAF Lakenheath’s Holiday Tree Lighting on December 8 26

LAKENHEATHFSS.COM | atEase

ith two brothers in the Air Force, Nashville’s Danika Portz is no stranger to the uniform. Her rhythmic, contemporary and soulful sound has been featured on TV shows including CBS’s Big Brother, NBC’s Spartan and MTV’s Virgin Territory. She has also opened up for hit acts including Martina McBride, Dan+Shay, Michael Ray, David Cook, A Thousand Horses & Dylan Scott. Her music has earned her the headlining spot at air shows across the US and five Armed Forces Entertainment tours. We caught up with Danika to learn a little more about this Midwestern girl performing all over the world.

atEase: Tell us a little bit about your brothers serving in the military. I have two brothers serving in the Air Force. One that has been in for seven years now and my youngest brother who just graduated basic training this past weekend!

atEase: How and why did you start this military-focused tour? Having family in the military changes your perspective on things. Until it's one of your own, it's really hard to imagine and understand what these men and women – and their families back home – are feeling day in and day out. The opportunity to tour with Armed Forces Entertainment has been the most perfect way for me to be able to give back to those military families. It's been pretty incredible – I’ve met soldiers from my tiny hometown of 1,600, I've met friends that have deployed with my brother, and I've made friends for life on these tours. It's the most rewarding work I've ever done. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to serve those who serve us.

atEase: Who/what are your musical influences? How would you categorize your music? I had control of the radio in the family car so I grew up on Top 40 pop, but my mom listened and sang Dolly Parton and John Denver, and my dad introduced me to The Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John, and The Eagles so my musical background is quite varied. My music is ever evolving – which is the fun thing about not only being an artist but being a songwriter as well. I think I'm somehow a cross between Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, and Ingrid Michaelson.

atEase: Is there any musician (or musical group) you'd love to collaborate with? Macklemore, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake.

atEase: What is your favorite holiday album? Do you have any favorite holiday traditions? Album: Kenny Rodgers & Dolly Parton (1984), Once Upon A Christmas. We used to listen to this on repeat while pulling out all the decorations the day after Thanksgiving. Also a huge fan of every Christmas song Michael Buble has sang ever. Favorite tradition: through some genealogy research we found some long distance relatives in Luxembourg and when I was in the 5th grade. They came to visit and had two kids around our age. We had a blast learning about their cultures and traditions and from that point on, we would exchange a giant Christmas box with them every year. When that box from the Luxembourgers arrived – filled with foreign candies, cookies, Nutella (didn't know what that was back then!), trinkets and little toys – it was honestly more exciting than getting gifts from Santa.

atEase: What are you most looking forward to seeing while you are in the UK?

The highlight for us is always meeting the soldiers during site visits. Hoping we get the opportunity to see around the bases and meet with different groups – from the firefighters to EOD to the flight line etc. It really makes you realize "it takes a village" and every single person on each base serves a purpose and is so important to the overall mission. Nashville pop artist, DANIKA PORTZ blends Midwest heart with big city sounds. She is signed to publishing house Green Hills Music Group and Grin Like a Dog Songs. She is also sponsored by several clothing franchises. Danika has been interviewed and featured in Country Weekly, MusicRow, and BILLBOARD Magazines. She has performed at CMA Fest, Hard Rock Cafes and Casinos, Nashville's legendary Bluebird Cafe and Wildhorse Saloon. Her experiences touring with AFE tours have inspired her to write her hit single, My Superhero. A portion of the proceeds from the song are going to wounded Iraq War Vet and former Dancing With The Stars finalist, Noah Galloway's, No Excuses Charity.

Friday, December 8th • 4:30pm • FREE Danika will be performing at this year’s Annual Holiday Tree Lighting at the MDG Roundabout. Enjoy music from Danika and the Youth Center as well as free cookies, hot chocolate and candy canes. There will also be photos with Santa! atEase | DECEMBER 2017

BABY DRIVER • R • CRIME/THRILLER

THE HOUSE • R • COMEDY

5/5 Action Packed Time

2/5 Comedy Bust

This movie is Grand Theft Auto 5 made into a film. Ansel Elgort "Baby" is a talented getaway driver who finally breaks even with a criminal mastermind and believes he's out of the business, only to find out he's back in and can't get out. There is an energy that can be felt when watching this film, from the action to the soundtrack (which is hands down music to your ears). Come check out this action packed, heart racing film that gives Vin Diesel a run for his money.

Scott and Kate Johansen’s daughter gets accepted to a top college on scholarship, but when that scholarship falls through, they come up with another way to pay the bill: through an underground casino. Even though the money is rolling in, they cannot handle the trials and tribulations that come with it. The film casts Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler, but as funny as they can be, they could not save this film. The House is another pushed comedy where the trailer has you laughing, but the movie itself has only a few laughs and a lot of awkward silences

Delivering Cheer RAF Lakenheath Post Office Readies for the Season In an era of online everything – from bill paying to ordering takeout – there’s something special about getting a tangible item in the mail, addressed just to you. Whether it’s a handwritten letter or a carefully considered gift from a family member overseas, it’s important that these thoughtful items are promptly and professionally delivered to the intended recipient. The staff and volunteers at the RAF Lakenheath Post Office are here around the clock to do just that. With an increase in both early and online gift shopping over the holidays, there is no longer a “busy day” for the Post Office, but rather a busy period. Beginning November 15, the RAFL Post Office extended its hours to accommodate the holiday rush, and will even stay open from 9am-9pm on Sunday, December 24th for those looking to pick up those last-minute packages. “The holidays are an exciting time because there are so many people in and out of our office,” said TSgt Raeann Gonzales. “The best times are when kids show up with decorated packages to send out to their family members – their excited faces really remind you how good it feels to give.” There is plenty of giving – and receiving – done by the 48th Fighter Wing personnel. In October 2017 alone, the Post Office sent out 41,245 pounds of mail and received more than 17,000 packages. Those numbers only increase as the holiday season gets closer, which means that there are volunteers and staff members working at all hours to get everything sorted and organized. “Sometimes people don’t realize that apart from Federal Holidays – we receive a delivery truck full of mail items each day,” said RAFL Postmaster, MSgt Janice Mullings. “December is our busiest month. Last year on a single day we delivered 2,100 packages. Our staff is amazing, as are our volunteers who provide much needed assistance during this busy time.” The great thing about volunteering at the Post Office is the flexibility that it offers. As long as you have at least two hours to spare, the staff will find you something to do. Comparable to the elves in Santa’s workshop, the Post Office employees and volunteers work well into the night sorting through mail and organizing packages so that they are easy to retrieve during working hours.“If someone wants to come in at midnight to volunteer, they can!” TSgt Raeann Gonzales said with a smile. Here at the 48th Force Support Squadron, we’re smiling because we will officially welcome the Post Office to our family on January 15, 2018. “As a huge quality of life operation, it makes sense for the Post Office to fall under the Force Support Squadron,” said Sunshine Knutson, Sustainment Flight Chief for the 48th FSS. “We are excited to be a part of this operation that brings so much to our Airmen and their families.” For information on volunteer opportunities available at the Post Office, please contact TSgt Jessica Glover at 226-2370.

Post Office Holiday Hours: Nov 15th – Dec 23rd Drop-Off: Mon-Fri 9am-6pm • Sat 9am-2pm Pick-Up: Mon-Fri 9am-7pm • Sat 9am-3pm Christmas Eve: (Dec 24th) Pick-Up: 9am-9pm Closed Dec 25-26 32

Name: Gary McCullers Hometown: Vero Beach, FL What do you enjoy most about your job? Performing light conversions without manufactured kits for specific vehicles. This process requires intensive thought to choose products as well as artistic flair to make a light conversion elegant as well as functional and durable. What is your favorite projects that you’ve worked on? I once obtained three Mercedes 190’s all headed for scrap. I managed to build a very nice vehicle from the three cars at the end of their useful lives. What is the most common car repair/ maintenance issue that you see coming into the Auto Hobby Shop? Aside from performing light conversions, I’ve repaired or completely re-accomplished light conversions that were done to a very poor standard. Favorite thing to do when you’re off the clock? I have nearly finished a decade-old project of rebuilding my 315 year old cottage and spending time on my partner’s farm with our nine Chihuahuas.
