P
hil Amtower loves his job. As a former airborne radio operator with Presidential-level security clearance, Phil has spent the last 25 years with the 48th FSS in a much more relaxed role, resident dough connoisseur.
The Great Little Pizza Place (GLPP) began making their dough from scratch 22 years ago and apart from a nine month period at the beginning of the venture, Phil has been the one to make it. This summer, he will have crafted 1.5 million dough balls, a tally that he has kept track of since the beginning. “It’s just me doing it – and up until April I was making dough five days a week,” Phil said. “Now that I’m semi-retired, I come in three days a week but they are full days.” The recipe for the dough hasn’t changed much over the years, and Phil has gotten it down to a science. When an air base in Germany was struggling to sell their pizzas, it was Phil that they sent over on a TDY to turn their product quality around. Hearing of his success, other bases started calling for the recipe. “The secret is consistency and a little bit of sugar,” Phil said with a smile. “That touch of sweetness makes a difference. We serve American-style pizza here – both pan and thin crust – and I feel that we do it better than anyone in the area, London included!” In fact, word about the quality of GLPP pizza has spread all the way to Darwin, Australia. Phil recalled a customer referral from three years ago coming from the city. While he was born in Stambaugh, Michigan, Phil has always had a soft spot for the U.K. He met his wife of 25 years, Joyce, while stationed at RAF Mildenhall. “I’ve always enjoyed singing, so I was performing on base at RAF Mildenhall when the Base Community Relations Advisor approached me to see if I’d like to join the Operatic Society,” he said. “Thirty-six years later I’m still involved with the society. It’s actually where I met my wife.” Phil’s interest in theatre and song is evident in his workspace, with Classic FM gently humming in the background as he mixes, cuts, weighs and bags the dough. While some might consider the position a bit isolating, Phil’s military training as a one-man radio operator gave him an appreciation of solo work. “I’m enjoying life,” he said. “When I first started at the Great Little Pizza Place, my wife thought I’d be bored. Here I am, 25 years later, and I’m still enjoying it. I don’t have stress at this job, which not a lot of people can say. As long as I’m physically capable, I’ll keep doing it." The Great Little Pizza Place is open 7 days a week, offering delivery service Thursday-Sunday. They offer small, medium and large size pizzas along with pizza by the slice. Phil ensures quality control by testing two slices each day he works. Stop by Monday-Friday between 11am-2pm for their meal deal: two jumbo slices of pizza and a drink for $5.50 (members pay just $4.50). Find their complete menu online. atEase | FEBRUARY 2018

FITS like a
GLOVE MAKE SURE YOU ARE SET UP FOR SUCCESS WITH THESE FITTING TIPS FROM DEAN With the golf season just around the corner, this month we are looking into the benefits of having correctly fitted golf clubs. Since we are all unique – with different arm lengths and ultimately different golf swings – we can’t take a one-sizefits-all approach to our golf equipment. The goal is to have your equipment fit you like a glove, and I can get you there with the five fitting factors outlined below. Want a custom fitting? Please call the ProShop and set up an appointment.
LIE ANGLE The lie angle of a golf club is simply the angle formed between the center of the shaft and the clubhead when it is lying parallel to the ground. The lie angle is important as it ensures the golf ball starts in the direction you want it to! If the lie angle of your golf club is incorrect, your clubface will be pointing either to the left or right at the point of contact between the clubface and the golf ball. When we analyze your golf swing, we will be able to see if there is a swing characteristic that needs to be taken into consideration. We are able to change the lie angle to suit the player’s golf swing if needed to match a particular swing characteristic or ball flight.
CLUB LENGTH The correct length club allows a player to maximize distance without losing accuracy. When looking at the length of club it is LAKENHEATHFSS.COM | atEase 16 LAKENHEATHFSS.COM | atEase
clubhead at impact. The weight of the club will also directly influence clubhead speed, which plays a key role in distance and accuracy of your shot.
CLUBHEAD DESIGN & SET MAKE UP
important not to base your decision on how tall that person may be, but on a wrist to floor measurement. It’s how long your arms are that will determine which club length you need.
SHAFT FITTING The shaft flex and weight will influence the position of the
With technology moving forward, hybrid clubs are becoming increasingly popular. Instead of long irons, we have clubheads that have different face angles and different weights to allow different ball flights. We also have clubs with larger heads to compensate for when we do miss the center of the clubface. All important elements for making our bad shots a bit better!
GRIP SIZE The main objective with grip size is to promote feel. Different size grips may help you control the clubface consistently and make sure your hands don’t regrip the club throughout the swing. ◆
Throughout the month of February, I will be offering a free 30 minute equipment MOT where we will check the 5 fitting factors we have covered in this month’s column. We want to check to make sure you are using the best fitted equipment to help your golf game. To book your free equipment MOT please contact the pro shop at 226-2223. Full custom fitting is available at the Breckland Pines ProShop, supplying the most up-to-date equipment from Ping, Callaway and TaylorMade irons and woods. We also have a workshop on site where a full range of customizations and alterations can be made to clubs. Meet the Expert: Dean Fairweather is a PGA member, TPI Certified Golf Professional and proud resident teaching pro at Breckland Pines Golf Club.

Set A Goal
SET A GOAL.
MAKE A PLAN. • Take the Military Saves Pledge to set short-term and long-term savings goals. • Set up a separate savings account for emergencies at a bank or credit union. • Pay down and manage debt. • Save for retirement, automatically, and take informed action regarding the Blended Retirement System (BRS).
SAVE
AUTOMATICALLY.
This Military Saves motto may sound easy enough, but what exactly does it mean and why is it important?
Make a Plan
What we’re really talking about is creating healthy savings habits for your family’s financial security through military life. But isn’t a habit a negative thing? Not when it comes to doing these three things and making it a part of the way you live your financial life. Why is it important to set goals? Because setting a goal, then making a plan and saving automatically are three steps to creating healthy savings habits and being financially fit.
• Use a spending plan to spend less than you earn and save the difference.
Save Automatically
These steps can also make changes like PCS moves, deployments and transitions from the military, such as retirement, easier on you and your family. Research has shown that those with a saving plan save more than those who don’t. It’s said that it takes 21 days to create a habit. This Military Saves Week, Feb. 26-March 3, 2018, start creating healthy financial habits by taking the Military Saves Pledge to set your savings goal and make a plan. Then complete one step each week through the first part of March and be on your way to financial fitness just in time for spring. You can do it!
• Set up an allotment from your pay using myPay. Use your banking institution's bill pay system to automatically transfer money from your checking account to a separate savings account.
Source: Create Healthy Savings Habits www.militarysaves.org
Military Saves Week is coordinated by Military Saves. The week is an annual opportunity for service members and their families to assess their savings status. Alecia D. Blair, MS, AFC ® Candidate, FINRA Foundation Fellow, is the Director of Military Saves and a military spouse. She has worked with Military Saves since 2014 and believes deeply in the campaign’s mission to help service members and their families save money, reduce debt and build wealth.

EVER AFTER
KATE AND LEOPOLD
Romance/ Drama • PG13 • 1998
Romantic Comedy • PG13 • 2001
If you are looking for the classic Cinderella story filled with little added twists, this is your movie. Starring Drew Barrymore and Angelica Huston, Ever After is the story of Danielle (Barrymore), a beautiful young girl who has lost her father at a young age only to be left with her evil stepmother (Huston) and two stepsisters. As the years go on, her stepmother has taken over the house and has made Danielle her slave. Danielle is eager to live a normal life, but will not leave her house as it has too many memories of her father. As the classic tale goes, Danielle goes on to meet the handsome prince while lying about who she is, but the fun is in the twist. Will there be one that you didn't see coming in order for Danielle to end up with her prince charming?
This time travel romance will leave you feeling the love between Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman. Leopold (Jackman) is the Third Duke of Albany who, in 1876, falls into a time portal with an amateur physicist that takes him to present day New York. He is confused with the modern city - and the comedy juxtaposes his 19th century British demeanor with the style of 21st century America. He is asked to stay in the apartment for a week until he can return to 1876 with the physicist, but encounters Kate (Ryan), who lives in the downstairs apartment. As he begins to fall in love with Kate, Leopold must face the difficult decision to stay with the woman he has fallen for, or go back to 1876 and think of this all as a dream.
