CRASH COURSE HISTORY

Separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain officially occurred on July 2, 1776 during a congressional vote but the Declaration of Independence, which we now commemorate, wasn’t signed until two days later. Some back-and-forth on the wording held things up. One of the founding fathers, John Adams, took the opportunity to envision how future generations might celebrate this historic occasion. His predictions of nationwide ‘pomp and parade...shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations’ have proven eerily accurate!

SHELLING OUT Adams and his wife Abigail indulged in a meal of turtle soup and poached salmon with egg sauce to celebrate independence. How things have changed! Now hot dogs steal the show with more than 150 million consumed on July 4 alone.

POMP + PARADE California hosts both the longest and shortest parades in the nation with the town of Alameda at coming in at lengthy 3.3 miles and shortest in Aptos at just over half a mile.

NEW TRADITIONS Sometimes fireworks just won't do! New holiday traditions are always emerging, like in Kentucky where it’s become customary to shoot at and blow up old electronic devices such as computers.

I, TONYA

5/5

In this gritty depiction of Tonya Harding's life story (played by Margot Robbie), we watch an extremely talented figure skater's fall from "grace" as a result of a series of mishaps and bad relationships. Through old interviews acted out verbatim, we are able to see all of the events unfold which lead up to the 1994 attack on fellow figure skater, Nancy Kerrigan, as well as the abuse and criticism Tonya faced in her early years. You begin to understand that there is much more to the story we all know about Tonya Harding and wonder what her life could have been under different circumstances.

VICTORIA AND ABDUL

4/5

This is the true story about an unlikely companionship forged between Queen Victoria and her servant, Abdul. After the two meet for Victoria's golden jubilee, she grows very fond of him for his kindness and demeanor and asks that he join her side every day until the jubilee is over. However, Victoria's household and inner circle do not approve of this friendship and they stop at nothing to drive a wedge between them. Despite some historical inaccuracies in the film, it tells a beautiful story of friendship, devotion and fighting for the ones you love.

School's Out! BETWEEN VACATIONS AND THE HEAT OUTSIDE, PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR THINGS TO DO ON THEIR DOWN TIME. SWING BY ELECTRIC AVENUE AND CHECK OUT ALL THE NEW CANDY STOCK AND NEW DEALS, YOU'LL BE HAPPY YOU DID!!
