DRIVING WITH DEAN
Make Your Next Drive Go Farther with Tips from Dean!
Join Dean Fairweather, resident teaching pro at Breckland Pines Golf Course, each month for tips on making the most of your time out on the golf course. This month, Dean is helping us get a few more yards off of our driver and gives some pointers on navigating hole one at the golf course.
1 ◆ SELECTING THE RIGHT DRIVER One of my key tips for hitting a great drive is getting the right club in your hands! Most golfers choose a driver with insufficient loft. What does that mean? The less loft on the club, the more chance of unwanted curvature for off-center hits. It doesn’t do you much good to have the longest drive if your ball ends up in the trees! If your clubhead speed is less than 100mph (90% of golfers will fall into this category), I recommend using a driver with a minimum of 11° loft.
2 ◆ SET UP POSITION When you are going to hit the ball, is it positioned on the inside of your left heel (for right-handed golfers)? If not, it’s time to readjust your stance. A strong, athletic position – no slouching! – is also key. Make sure you are setting yourself up for success before your club even touches the ball.
3 ◆-BACKSWING Even though the club doesn’t come into contact with the ball in your backswing, it is crucial setup to your downswing. Two simple points to remember when you are working on your backswing. First, turn your lead shoulder behind the golf ball. Then, at the top of the backswing, load 70% of your weight onto your back leg. This will allow you to get the momentum you need to transition into your downswing.
4 ◆ DOWNSWING Here, you’ll want to transfer your weight from your back leg to your front leg. Then, redistribute your body weight so that you are leaning towards your target – for right-handed golfers this means leaning to the left. (See photo). If you hit the ball when your club is on the upswing, this will help increase your launch angle and lower the spin rate – two keys when it comes to distance and accuracy. Want to see if you are hitting the ball at the correct spot? Place an old golf ball box six inches in front of a teed up ball and take a swing. If you hit the ball and miss the box, you’re hitting the ball on the up. Numbers throwing you off? Need some one-on-one instruction? Book a golf lesson with Dean or stop into the ProShop for a custom fitting at Breckland Pines. Our SkyTrak launch monitor will help us get you the perfect driver.
MEET THE EXPERT Dean Fairweather is a PGA member, TPI Certified Golf Professional and proud resident teaching pro at Breckland Pines Golf Club. Dean has coached golfers at all levels, from beginners to fellow professionals, and enjoys delivering effective solutions to what can be at times a confusing game. Each month, Dean’s column will cover a wide range of golf topics from instructional pointers to pro tips for the course. Need some extra pointers? Book a golf lesson with him by calling the Pro Shop at 226-2223.

STROKE SAVER
Breckland Pines Golf Course Specific Tips
Hole 1: A lovely opening par 4 with a small dogleg to the right. I always take a driver of the 1st teeing up on the right side of the tee box hoping to get a small fade. If you can hit it 190 yards, the landing area gets far wider as you have gotten past the majority of the trees. The trees in this area act as a funnel. A tricky second shot will greet you to a well-guarded green if you carry it far enough. There’s a green side bunker to the left and right, which means the green will hold your ball as it slopes from your back to the front. Make par on the first hole and you’ll have a spring in your step as you make your way to the second! - Dean Fairweather

LIBERTY LIBRARY 226-3713 • BLDG 907
SAVE THE DATE, AND WE'LL SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE
PAWSitive Behavior-Jasmine Duvall Addressing unwanted behaviors in pets before they creep into the daily routine is the best way to deal with them. However, many people don't know the appropriate way to do this and end up losing the battle or unknowingly teaching their dog to continue acting out the unwanted behavior. Let's take anxiety as an example. I was recently at a client's home where one of the dogs kept barking at me, backing away, jumping onto furniture, choosing her place to fend me off and whining when she wasn't barking. Each time the dog displayed this sort of behavior, the owner would do what most people do with babies - start comforting the dog by petting her and whispering reassuring words in her ear. The dog would calm down while the physical touch lasted, with the owner explaining to me that this was the only way to get the dog to calm down. When the coddling stopped, the whining started back up again. In the wild, if there was a dog in a pack behaving like this, that behavior would quickly be stopped by the other members of the pack as it poses a serious risk to the well-being of the community if their location is compromised in certain circumstances. Researchers have learned that by snapping the dog out of its stressful dangerous state of mind and normalizing it, they can get the dog to calm down and change their behavior. How does that translate to a home? By following a few simple steps (see sidebar), it took between 12-13 minutes for the dog to relax and even allow another member of the household to walk in the home without barking or whining. Have a dog with anxiety or another unwanted behavior? Join me on Saturday, November 4, from 10:30am-12:30 to learn more tips on how to give your dog a stress-free life.
Jasmine is a level three certified dog behaviorist who owns and operates Peaceful Belly Rubs, a local business that focuses on dog psychology, behavior and training. As a military spouse who has always had a connection to animals, six years after adopting a 6 month old rescue dog from Hungary named Lady Pepper, Jasmine was finally able to pursue her dream of becoming a dog behaviorist. She loves sharing the knowledge she has gained through her education in helping people better understand their dogs and resolve behavior issues in a gentle, kind way.

Ignore Bad Behavior - This is the first step
to snapping dogs out of their stressful, dangerous state of mind and normalizing it.
Designate a Safe Space - If ignoring the
behavior isn't working, try giving your dog a designated space or focal point like a blanket or bed where they can feel safe. Have the dog stay in that space without rewarding them with treats or words. The goal is to show the dog that there is nothing to worry about. By communicating through our actions and body language that we have control of the situation, all the dog has to do is lay down and relax, not worry about what is going on around.
Step Away - Once the dog has let go and
is completely relaxed, step away. Reward her new state of mind with space, replacing reinforcing anxiety with reinforcing a relaxed state of mind. Eventually this new space will become the animal's safe zone, further reinforcing calm.
PEACEFUL BELLY RUBS DOG BEHAVIOR CLASS Saturday, November 4 • 10:30am-12:30pm Helping people understand where dog issues like barking excessively, aggression, bolting out the door, hyperactive behavior, anxiety and not listening come from and what it takes to have a balanced dog. Registration is limited! *Sign up by October 31 to reserve your spot.

MONTH THE MILITARY FAMILY OF
PROVIDING STRENGTH TO THOSE WHO SERVE RAFL celebrates the Month of the Military Family
Gratitude [noun] - The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. - Oxford Living Dictionaries
For many Americans, the month of November is one that elicits feelings of thankfulness and gratitude. The Department of Defense also takes the month to shine the spotlight on those who stand behind the uniform, military families. Today’s military families in many ways mirror the modern American family. They are single parents, dual military members, blended families, unmarried service members, same sex couples, special needs families, etc. They are children transitioning into a new school, spouses transitioning into a new job, families providing strength and sacrifice to support our men and women in uniform. Established in 1993 and recognized every year since, the Month of the Military Family was established by the Armed Services YMCA. The month includes events to celebrate families across the armed forces, and here at RAF Lakenheath, we are proud to host several events that express our gratitude for those family members who are serving, too. Thank you, military families, for all you do to support this great nation.

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD PG-13• ACTION
4/5 action packed time
NEW RELEASES:
Many of us grew up with the story of King Arthur. The legend of the man is a mystery that has been put into context on the stage (Camelot), in print (T.H. White, Zimmer Bradley, Malory, etc.) and on screen (Disney, Robert Taylor, etc.). This time, it's Guy Ritchie's turn to take on the story. The film shows the audience how Arthur was taken from his castle to the back alleys and is forced to survive until he is able to make his way back to the throne. He slowly remembers how his father was killed and starts seeing the dark side of his uncle - now the king. The pace of this hero's journey film is fast, with music to match - this soundtrack could be your next playlist at the gym. With so many adaptations of the legendary King Arthur, this contemporary take is one to pick up this weekend.

MEET YOUR MECHANIC Name: Andy Challiss Hometown: Brandon, U.K. What do you enjoy most about your job and about the field in general: For me it’s being able to help others and constantly learn new skills in my trade. I also keep up with technological advances in the trade because I think it’s important to have a greater understanding of how things work. What are some of your favorite projects that you've worked on and why: Over the years I have worked on many projects, but one that sticks out in my mind was the nut and bolt rebuild of my uncle’s 1962 Morris Minor. We took it from a rusty old wreck to a show winning car. I also really enjoyed building banger racing cars to race on our local track at Mildenhall Stadium. What are some of the trends you see emerging in your field: Modern cars are becoming very computer controlled with the average car having ten or more on board computers which need dedicated diagnostic equipment programming. As a result, check engine lights, ABS faults and AIR BAG faults are becoming a much more common. Here at the Auto Hobby Complex we are very lucky to have some of the most up-to-date equipment that makes it easy for me to provide a great service to our customers. Being able to quickly diagnose the issue not only reduces the cost of the repair, it also prevent a trip to the car dealer. What is the most common car repair / maintenance issue that you see coming into the Auto Hobby Complex: We see many of your typical repair items including tire issues (repairs, wheel alignments), battery issues, lockouts, jumpstarts, and MOT fails. We also offer a local recovery service and perform many oil changes. Preventative care is really key to increasing the life of your engine. I always encourage people to bring your car in if you are worried about something. Getting a problem checked out in its infancy can prevent future high price tag problems. Favorite things to do when you off duty? Family comes first on my list and I am proud to have a great and supportive wife, three sons, and a grandson. I also am proud to support my local community and schools, helping to ensure the success of our younger generations. Personally, I also enjoy online gaming on my PS4 and have made many friends over the years through that community. For the last nine years I’ve actually made an annual trip to Florida to meet up with friends I’ve met through online gaming. Finally, I have to give a shout out to my family at the Auto Hobby Complex. It’s a really supportive team that I’m proud to be a part of. Keep up the great work FSS.
