FOR THE FUN OF IT!

Sailboat racing is fun. There’s no theme more central to success than fun, for individual race boats and event organizers alike. I’m proud to present our Seattle Area Racing Calendar (SARC) for 2024, a staggering array of more than 350 on-the-water events in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia that offer everything from world-class competition to beautiful adventure in wondrous surroundings, from moments that push us beyond our comfort zones to puzzles that challenge the brightest and most talented. Still, it is my genuine belief that every single one of them is also an invitation for participants to have a seriously good time.

Sailing well and having fun are not mutually exclusive. It might take focus, but you don’t have to take yourself too seriously to be at the top of the game. The best racers I know express their joy for sailing — sometimes directly, but other times through inquisitiveness, curiosity, gratitude, support, ingenuity, respect, and humor on and off the water. These ingredients always combine for a fun racing recipe, whether you’re at the front or the back of the fleet, and whether it’s blowing 15 on a sunny summer day or the current is taking you backwards during a windless winter downpour.

As you look through the SARC and plan your personal racing calendar for the year, do it with a spirit of fun. Do we give our evenings, weekends, and vacation days to our boats, our crews, our fleets, and this regional community of racing geeks solely out of a desire to best our fellow competitors? I do it for the fun of it, and if I get to win a few… well that’s just gravy.

MAKE SURE YOUR RIGGING IS RACE READY AND RELIABLE

Across PTR’s range of rigging and spar building services, our primary support for racers around the region has been through building high quality wire and rod standing rigging. Thanks to partnerships, like with CSR in Seattle, rigging made by PTR can be seen on race boats throughout the Salish Sea.

Racing sailors often focus on performance optimization, but a sometimes-overlooked aspect of performance is dependability. Routine scheduled inspections, maintenance, and preventative care are critical to the structural integrity of the rig and your crew’s safety. These efforts also protect the financial investment in the rigging and the boat itself. Proper maintenance will limit downtime and maximize the time your race program has on the water, keeping you sailing fast and avoiding gear failure.

STANDING RIGGING CARE

1) Regularly use fresh water to rinse wire, rod, and all fittings.

2) Remove tape from rigging after use. Tape can trap water and other contaminants, which will accelerate corrosion.

3) Be sure all halyards are restrained and properly led internally aloft. This will help prevent a halyard wrap, which could lead to a “birdcage” or broken strand on your wiring rigging or a “corkscrew” bend in your rod stay.

4) Check the tension of your rigging regularly and tension appropriately. Generate a log of rig tension settings along with your sail inventory.

5) Check to make sure clevis pin holes on the chainplates are not oval-ed out and cotter pins are properly bent to secure the rigging.

ROUTINE INSPECTIONS

Routine inspections of the entire rig are a great preventive tool; and it’s a good idea to create a schedule for you and your crew to do their own maintenance and inspections, in sequence with routine inspections performed by a professional rigger. Race crew can complete inspections of rigging on deck and aloft, preferably when there is time to thoroughly look over all components. Before any inspection, review information about the rigging on your vessel — rod, wire, and fiber have some similarities, but also have different physical identifiers that

indicate the need for repair or replacement. Create a photo log as you complete your inspections and maintenance.

LIFE EXPECTANCY

Whether you have rod, wire, or fiber rigging, many factors affect the life expectancy of the rigging and fittings. It’s important to understand what determines when it’s time to replace, and to know that engineers from leading manufacturers have been analyzing these questions for decades. Do not wait until there is a broken strand or fitting to decide it’s time to replace your rigging. We strongly recommend doing your homework to know the age and life expectancy of the rigging components on your boat, and to consider factors like these:

1) Time / miles in service — the amount of sailing time the vessel has seen.

2) Type of sailing conditions the rig has experienced and sailed in regularly — heavy or light air, or sailed through two gale storms.

3) Amount and types of loads — higher loads near breaking strength of wire or rod equals a shorter life span.

4) Environment, UV exposure, and pollutants — has the rigging been cleaned with fresh water regularly to remove contaminants and does fiber rigging have a UV-protectant cover and is it free of chafe?

5) Rod rigging re-heading — this process may add more time to your rigging, but the rigging itself is nearing replacement after about 20,000 miles.

6) Age of the rigging — be sure to document when you replace each of your stays and shrouds, so you can have an accurate schedule for replacement.

Knowing where your standing rigging is in its life span is an important safety and performance measure — losing a shroud is slow whether racing or cruising, and losing a rig is even slower. Preventive care and routine maintenance are key and will help you know when you need to replace rigging. A schedule of routine inspections will keep you informed and limit downtime for your sailing program. Having confidence in your rigging gives racers the ability to optimize, perform, and push your boat safely on the race course.
