THE MORE THE MERRIER!

One of my favorite things about sailboat racing is its inherently welcoming nature. Every race improves with greater participation. Love skiing, camping, climbing, and or even (dare I say it) sailboat cruising? In any of these wonderful outdoor pursuits, you’re likely to encounter the occasional reality that these activities would be enhanced if only there weren’t so many people trying to enjoy the same things in the same location. Not so with sailboat racing! Our fun only increases when more folks share the water.

I bring this up because the 75-plus organizing authorities that help us put together the SARC each year are walking, talking, sailing models of cooperation and collaboration. It’s an incredibly full calendar, but everyone brings a rising-tide spirit — working hard to minimize competition between events and being flexible whenever possible to maximize participation. I’m humbled each year to witness this unwavering commitment to helping more boats and sailors take to the waters of the Salish Sea.

Thank you to these organizers — always, but especially because of these efforts and desires for the greater good! Thank you to our advertisers who support this community and make the SARC possible each year! And to the sailors who make the boat racing experience in the Pacific Northwest fun, exciting, and inclusive — thank you!

UNLOAD THE OLD ROPE

IT’S DYNEEMA TIME!

There’s an incredible amount of options when it comes to outfitting a racing sailboat. From choosing the right sails, bottom paint, electronics, and many other decisions — an owner has a lot to consider before even getting to the start line.

Once the primary components of the standing rigging and spars are optimized, a next step would be to look at the running rigging. While agetested lines made from Dacron or other materials may still keep the sails up and trimmed, modern advances in rope technology will provide that extra boat length that is needed to win.

The upgrades we choose for running rigging will depend on where the line is used. Starting with halyards, we are looking for a line with minimal stretch so that, once hoisted, we can be assured the sail stays in the same position at the masthead. A stretchy halyard will allow the sail to drop, thus changing the draft shape of the sail. Dyneema is the standard for low-to-no-stretch.

For working sail halyards (main and jib), we typically look for a Dyneemacored line, usually SK78 at least. What does the SK mean? That is a nod to the two designers of modern Dyneema, Smith and Kirschbaum. SK 78 is the standard Dyneema in use for most lines. Higher “SK’’ numbers typically mean higher load capacity. We’ll use SK38 as a budget option for some halyards, while SK99 is the choice for very high loads and where low stretch is necessary —

including removable staysail stays and backstays.

We also have to consider what’s covering a Dyneema core, and what systems will hold the line. A soft cover will get eaten up in a rope clutch or if sitting in the same position on a sheave. Look for 24-plait covers as they will be much more chafe resistant. A soft cover is easier on the hands, but a stiff, tightly braided cover will hold up for many seasons of use.

What about sheets, vangs, and other deck control lines? Sometimes a little stretch can be a good thing. We’ve heard of several boats using lines similar to climbing ropes for traveler controls as the stretch acts as a shock absorber during jibes. A line that is held in hand, such as a spinnaker sheet on a J/24, doesn’t necessarily need high load cores but does need to remain lightweight and not absorb water. Lines that are waterlogged will not only add weight aloft but will also affect sail shape on light wind days.

New lines can be stronger than old wire-to-rope halyards and, with the option to taper, can fit into smaller sheaves and mast sections. They can also drastically reduce weight aloft, which reduces heel. Hey, easier hiking!

By Scott Galbraith, Rigging Tech at PTR Rigging and Spars. This article was provided as a part of a PTR's paid package as the Presenting Sponsor of the SARC.

A QUICK OVERVIEW:

HALYARDS AND JIB SHEETS:

No stretch, SK78 or SK99 depending on boat size, chaferesistant 24-plait cover. Taper halyards to reduce weight aloft or ease lines through small masthead sheaves.

SPINNAKER SHEETS:

Look for a line that is lightweight and won’t absorb water. For a smaller boat where sheets are held by hand, look for a softer cover.

CONTROL LINES:

Possibly some stretch to help with shock absorption during jibes. Uncovered Dyneema is great for cascade purchases in vangs, outhauls, and backstays — but it won’t hold well in clutches.

Doublehanded sailors, there’s now a new regional racing series just for you! Comprised of eight races that are either doublehanded by design or with established doublehanded divisions — the PNWSSS Series aims to recognize doublehanded teams from around the Salish Sea.

Scores will be tabulated by the Pacific Northwest Shorthanded Sailing Society (PNWSSS) throughout 2023, with awards presented at the end of the season. Your top four finishes count with simple low-point scoring (a first place in a shorthanded race or division equals one point). Awards will also be available for the boat(s) that participate in the most races in the series. For more information visit www.PNWSSS.org

The 2023 PNWSSS Series includes:

• May 6-7, STYC, Race to the Straits

• May 20-21, SISC, Round Saltspring Island

• J une 24, OIYC, Round Orcas

• August 5-6, STYC, Down the Sound

• August 11-13, AYC, Northern Century

• August 26, VRC, Ken & Barbie

• August 27, WVYC, Jack & Jill

• S ept. 16-17, SYC, Ludlow Double Dipper

Distance races and around-the-buoys. Single-race events and multi-race regattas. The qualifying races for 48° North’s Top 25 have something for everyone. Scoring is on a percentage basis depending on the size of the class: 0% (did not finish) to 100% (first in class), where the event score = (Finishers – Place) / (Finishers – 1). Overall scores are an average of a boat’s best five finishes.
