Gunter Middle School 7th Grade Trip to Austin

Mrs. Rodarmer’s 7th Grade Texas History Classes and Coryann Johnson, an agent at Herrin Real Estate raised funds to preserve a historical map (1913) of Grayson County. No money from the state of Texas is allocated for map preservation. This project is through Texas General Land Office in Austin. OurGunter was the very first donor for this project and we are excited to to see the photos of the students in Austin at the Capitol, their meeting with Texas Senator Pat Fallon as well as the group’s check presentation to Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush. For information on how to adopt a map, contact Susan Smith Dorsey, Director and Records Management Officer for the Texas General Land Office at 512-463-5274

On June 23, 1903, a deed was signed that transferred ownership of land in Grayson County Texas from Jot Gunter to Gunter Bible College. 1903 was the year the streets of Gunter were laid out. The Handbook of Texas Online published by the Texas State Historical Association contains an article about Gunter Bible College written by N.L. Clark. The article states Gunter Bible College was a junior college directed by members of the Church of Christ. It existed in Gunter from September 1903 to May 1928. In 1928 it was moved to Littlefield where it continued until May 1930. The school opened with three teachers and nine students and grew to twelve teachers and 190 students. The school conducted elementary and high school programs as well junior college courses. All students were required to study the Bible and special courses were offered for ministerial students. Approximately 150 preachers received their training here. The website www. findagrave.com lists the names of thirty-eight preachers who attended Gunter Bible College. Some well-known names included in the list were Robert Cantrell, Homer Gay, Hugh Gearhart, L.W. Hayhurst, P. C. Key, E.W. McMillan, G.F. Mickey, and George Trott. Reading the obituaries and memorials of these men is like reading a history of the Church of Christ in Texas and Oklahoma. Many religious books, tracts, and religious periodicals were written by men educated at Gunter Bible College. Roy Hazelton who was an evangelist and elder in the Church of Christ until his death in 1992 was a graduate of Gunter Bible College. Mr. Hazelton was also a biology instructor at the college at the same time he was a student, helping to pay part of his tuition in this way. While attending college at Gunter, he met and married Katie Webster. Miss Webster was a student there at the time, living with her sister Mamie who was married to L. W. Hayhurst, another teacher at the college. When the college moved to Littlefield in 1928, the Hazeltons moved with it. Roy Hazelton was a teacher at the new location until the school failed and closed in 1930. Closure was due to financial reasons as well as some doctrinal disagreements. The first president of Gunter College was Nimrod L. Clark who served for nine years. Alfred Ellmore, who was then age 74, followed him in 1912 and was president until 1922, resigning at age 84. John Rucker Freeman was the next president. When the school was moved to Littlefield, Robert Franklin Duckworth was president for a year. 8

b le C o l le g e Gunter Bible College was one of many religious colleges begun in north Texas around the turn of the century. The charter of Southwestern Christian College in Denton (1904-1909) was modeled after the Gunter Bible College charter. Other area church colleges included Carlton College in Bonham, 1865-1916; Carr-Burdette College in Sherman, 1893-1914; and Muse Academy in McKinney, 1857-87. After Gunter Bible College moved to Littlefield, the college facilities were used for a Christian care center. Christian Care Centers was founded on April 4, 1947 under the name “Home for the Aged” in Gunter, Texas, as a ministry to retired church of Christ ministers. The old Gunter Bible College housed the first elder residents, who were cared for by monetary donations from individuals and churches, as well as contributions, such as cows, garden produce, pigs, and other necessities, from area neighbors. Later known as Hilltop Haven, it was one of the first area nursing communities in Texas to be certified for Alzheimer’s care. Hilltop Haven Home for the Aged closed in 2013 after 65 years of in operation. Information for this article came from personal interviews, Internet sources, Online Handbook of Texas, and https://christiancarecenter.org/corporat/our-history

Estate Plans Can Help You Answer Questions About the Future The word “estate” conjures images of great wealth, which may be one of the reasons so many people don’t develop estate plans – after all, they’re not rich, so why make the effort? In reality, though, if you have a family, you can probably benefit from estate planning, whatever your asset level. And you may well find that a comprehensive estate plan can help you answer some questions you may find unsettling – or even worrisome. Here are a few of these questions: What will happen to my children? With luck, you (and your co-parent, if you have one) will be alive and well at least until your children reach the age of majority (either 18 or 21, depending on where you live). Nonetheless, you don’t want to take any chances, so, as part of your estate plans, you may want to name a guardian to take care of your children if you are not around. You also might want to name a conservator – sometimes called a “guardian of the estate” – to manage any assets your minor children might inherit. Will there be a fight over my assets? Without a solid estate plan in place, your assets could be subject to the time-consuming, expensive – and very public – probate process. During probate, your relatives and creditors can gain access to your records, and possibly even challenge your will. But with proper planning, you can maintain your privacy. As one possible element of an estate plan, a living trust allows your property to avoid probate and pass quickly to the beneficiaries you’ve named. Who will oversee my finances and my living situation if I become incapacitated? You can build various forms of protection into your estate planning, such as a durable power of attorney, which allows you to designate someone to manage your financial affairs if you become physically or mentally incapacitated. You could also create 10

a medical power of attorney, which allows someone to handle health care decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself. Will I shortchange my family if I leave significant assets to charities? Unless you have unlimited resources, you’ll have to make some choices about charitable gifts and money for your family. But as part of your estate plans, you do have some appealing options. For example, you could establish a charitable lead trust, which provides financial support to your chosen charities for a period of time, with the remaining assets eventually going to your family members. A charitable remainder trust, by contrast, can provide a stream of income for your family members for the term of the trust, before the remaining assets are transferred to one or more charitable organizations. As you can see, careful estate planning can help you answer many of the questions that may be worrying you. Be aware, though, that certain aspects of estate planning, especially those related to living trusts and charitable trusts, can be complex, so you should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor about your situation. But once you’ve got your plans in place, you should be able to face the future with greater clarity and confidence.
