Letter From The Publishers 2020 is off with a bang! We are glad January is over (was that a long month or what?!?!) ! While we are glad that one is over, it was an incredible month for our community! We had such a great time with our friends and neighbors covering so many events and meeting people. We opened a new fire station, we celebrated football and volleyball seasons, we had a cheer team compete at State, honored a life gone too soon and much much more. And because we know memories and moments are to be cherished, we have them all right here for you! We hope you enjoy this month's issue of OurCelina magazine. As always, if there's anything you'd like to see, we would love to hear from you! We LOVE feedback and welcome your suggestions!

From The Office of Mayor

Sean Terry

The month of February is upon us, the time of year when we turn our attention to matters of the heart. It’s no coincidence that February includes Valentine’s Day and is also Heart Health Month. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day with chocolates, flowers, and dinner dates, let’s also be sure to pay attention to the health of our loved ones. February is also a great time to connect with your City. Our official tagline, after all, is Life Connected. In that vein, the City is offering several ways to deepen our connections. By the way, our sincerest thanks to those of you who took the time to share your thoughts on our new tagline during last month’s Town Hall Meeting. In addition to your great comments on Life Connected, the Town Hall Meeting served as a great way to initiate connections with our staff and with fellow residents. Also, as part of our efforts to develop and deepen our connections, I’m very pleased to invite you to join us at our first Coffee with the Council event. It’s scheduled for Lucy’s on the Square on Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on a come-and-go basis. We’ll provide the coffee and pastries and hope that as many of you as possible can come by, have a cup of coffee, share your thoughts, and help us put our tagline into action. We’ll try to have as many of these Coffee with the Council events as possible and move them from place to place, giving residents a chance to visit different businesses and restaurants downtown. Speaking of downtown, the City’s first podcast, called Life in Celina, features conversations that center on the downtown area and businesses. Find it by searching for Life in Celina on iTunes. The first episode is about a half hour and features a look at the downtown area. In addition to Alexis Jackson, Rebecca Barton and myself, episode one includes a conversation with Dante Ramirez of Tender Smokehouse. The podcast, which is also posted on our website, www.celina-tx.gov/podcast is another great way to stay connected. Staying connected also means taking part in our annual special events. Virtually the entire year is jam-packed with events and activities that encourage connections. Check out our website, www.celina-tx.gov for a list of the 2020 events and dates. Another way to stay connected is to attend our City Council meetings. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month starting at 5 p.m. in the Celina ISD board room. If you can’t make the meetings, visit the City’s Facebook page or YouTube channel where I’ll provide summaries of our meetings. Finally, we’re extremely excited about the opening of our second fire station in the Light Farms subdivision. The fire station, appropriately called “The Farm House,” was officially put into service on Jan. 24. We invite you to join us for an Open House on Feb. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s a come-and-go event, with lunch, activities for the kids, and station tours. Remember to fly your flag on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 17. City Hall will be closed that day. Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

Days Gone By By Lisa Ferguson

Growing up in the 1940s and ‘50s, Jane Willard spent more Saturday nights than she can recall watching movies at the Ritz, a theater that was near West Pecan and North Colorado streets on Celina’s then-bustling downtown square. Back then, “The stores stayed open until after the midnight show,” the 76-year-old lifelong resident said. At one time, the city boasted four grocery stores, about as many filling stations and several dry cleaners, among other merchants. “You didn’t have to leave Celina” in search of goods, services or entertainment, she said. “It was fun.” “Everything was busy,” added Jane Huddleston, who has called Celina home for all of her 81 years. “You’d bring your car to town on a Saturday afternoon and park it, just so you’d have a place to sit” that evening. In 1999, both Willard and Huddleston became founding members of the board of directors of the Celina Area Heritage Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating current and future residents as well as visitors about the city’s storied past. “We decided that if we didn’t start recording the history (of Celina), it was going to be gone,” Willard explained of the board’s beginnings. Operating solely on proceeds it receives as a charity of the East Plano Bingo facility in Plano, CAHA assists with preservation efforts at Celina cemeteries and hosts the city’s annual Memorial Day event. In the early 2000s, the group raised funds for the Veterans’ Memorial monument on Celina’s square; and with an organization known as the Alla Board, helped pay for the restoration of a statue of Alla Hubbard (namesake of the former school that in 1958 consolidated with Celina ISD) after it was vandalized at Cottage Hill Cemetery. The statue now stands in the library at Celina High School. CAHA’s nine current board members, who are all volunteers, also acquire, research and help preserve the numerous documents and artifacts that are stored and exhibited at the Celina Museum, at 211 W. Pecan St., which is open to the public from 1-3 p.m. Thursdays. The turn-of-the-century brick museum building has become a local landmark, courtesy of the origiPhoto by Lisa Ferguson nal (albeit twice-restored) Coca-Cola advertisement that adorns its exterior wall and greets motorists The Navy uniform of Dr. traveling west into Celina’s historic square. For decades the building was home to the Celina Record Vance Stallcup, a Celina newspaper, which began publishing in 1902. For a time, the newspaper office shared an interior wall dentist, is displayed. with a local doctor’s practice, and later the Texas Power and Light Company office when it inhabited the building’s east-facing side. When CAHA purchased building in 2001, it also took possession of the contents which included the newspaper’s original presses that are now on display, as well as thousands of copies of the Celina Record dating back to 1911. “We have a few (issues) from the teens. We have a goodly bunch from the ‘20s, and a real good bunch from the ‘30s. From ‘40 on, we’ve got them all,” said Willard, who for several years has been scanning copies of the newspapers into a computer. The uploaded images can be viewed via The Portal to Texas History, a website of the University of North Texas Libraries’ Digital Collection, at www. texashistory.unt.edu. The museum is packed with a wide assortment of items, many of them donated by longtime residents of Celina and surrounding areas. Exhibit cases that line the walls are filled with everything from photos and household items to painstakingly detailed accounts of notable events in the city’s history. A pair of old-fashioned glass soda bottles from the former Celina Bottling Co. are displayed, as is the badge of Walter Stallcup, first chief of the Celina Volunteer Fire Department. The latter is just a few feet away from the WWII-era Navy uniform of his son, Dr. Vance Stallcup, a local dentist. Military memorabilia and artifacts are numerous, especially those belonging Celina residents who served. Founding board member Bob McKnight, who in 2017 retired from a decades-long career as president of Independent Bank in Celina, built many of the museum’s display cases and has helped collect pieces for its military exhibits. Recent additions include a pair of Vietnam-era uniforms donated by the family of a late Celina serviceman. “Bob has done a terrific job on all of the military displays,” Huddleston said. “That’s his passion.” Each year a collection of small white wooden crosses, constructed by CAHA board members and featuring the names of local servicemen who have died within the previous 12 months, are displayed. Using information culled from old newspaper articles, Willard was able to create a booklet that includes photos and biographies of most of the men whose names are on the city’s Veterans’ Memorial monument.

Handcrafted white crosses featuring the names of local military servicemen who have recently passed away are displayed on a table at the Celina Museum.

Another exhibit rotates to coincide with the theme of the annual Memorial Day presentation on the square. The event features guest speakers, a color guard ceremony and the playing of “Taps” by a lone bugler. “We honor not only 12

the people who have passed away, but also those who are alive and have served,” McKnight, 67, explained. Last spring, the association commemorated the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into WWI with an exhibit that included a metal helmet, gas mask and other military equipment from the era. A theme for the 2018 program will soon be announced. The centerpiece of the Celina Museum is a massive wraparound, wood-topped counter from the former Celina State Bank, which opened in 1910 at the corner of West Walnut and North Ohio streets (the space is now occupied by the offices of the Celina Economic Development Corporation and Celina Main Street department). Decades later, the counter was removed from the building and relocated a few doors down the street to a former antique shop, in a storefront currently inhabited by Movement Church. The counter remained there a while – that is, until Willard decided it was a prime piece for the museum. “I bought the building to get the counter,” she explained, and eventually had it moved to the museum, where a roll-top desk also original to the old bank is displayed nearby. On a wall near the front of the museum is a massive stained-glass window. The intricate piece was removed years ago from the former First Presbyterian Church on West Walnut Street (better known these days as the Turquoise Firefly building, home of Jimbo’s Pizza). At the museum, a special case was built to house the window which is backlit to accentuate its detail. “We’ve collected so much stuff over the years, it’s kind of hard to add” to the museum’s collection as space is at a premium, Photo by Lisa Ferguson McKnight said. However, what is needed is some “young blood” – people interested in preserving Celina’s past and A stained-glass window from the former First Presbyterian Church who are willing to help guide it into the future by vol- on W. SCHOOL ZONE

From The Desk of Rick DeMasters “Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else,” is a quote by the one and only Mr. Fred Rogers, who was such an advocate for children and wanted everyone to feel that they were welcome i n his neighborhood. Last month, I shared my resignation letter with all of you. This time next year, I will begin a new chapter away from what has been my neighborhood for many years, but until then there is much to accomplish before this season draws to a close. From the first day of school to the end of January, the district has welcomed 85 students. Templeton Demographics 2019 Fall enrollment projection totaled 2,806 students. Present enrollment figures total 2,816. Donny O’Dell Elementary and Celina Junior High are witnessing the most growth as compared to the other campuses. This figure is actually less than first projected. Weather has had a significant effect on construction projects throughout the area. Developers who once thought that their homes would be on the ground last spring are now six to eight months behind. Rainy conditions have delayed the completion of roads going to and from new subdivisions and without these roads, the construction time table for new campuses must also be addressed. With that said, current construction projects are underway. Celina Elementary campus renovations are taking shape. Steel is going up, followed by exterior walls and once the roof is installed, the weather becomes less of a factor on the overall timeline for completion of this project. The new playground was completed over winter break and is being enjoyed by our faculty and students. The new parking lot is being formed and should be completed soon as long as the weather remains consistent. The Celina Athletic Complex is in the process of adding dressing areas to the west of the indoor practice facility. On the north side of the dressing areas will be public restrooms and a concession stand that will serve the new softball and baseball complex. To the east of the indoor practice facility, field events to include, pole vault, long/triple j ump, shot and discus areas will start to take shape. All of these surfaces to include the softball and baseball fields will be turf, which will eliminate the maintenance required for non-turf fields. Even with construction at their doorstep, CHS Athletics is a whirlwind of activity with many different sports competing at one time. During the month of January, the CHS Cheer Competition Team traveled to Ft. Worth to compete for the first time i n school history at the UIL State Spirit Competition. The team finished 12th out of 87 4A schools. We are extremely proud of their hard work and finishing as one of the Top 20 teams in the State. Basketball, powerlifting and soccer are traveling to competitions throughout the week. Baseball and softball seasons have started and our first track and field competitions will be held this month. Our Special Olympic Athletes recently competed in a basketball competition held at Austin College. They came home with nine 1st place, seven 2nd place, ten 3rd place, and place medals. They have one more basketball competition before they start training for Track and Field. The team was also outfitted with new warm-ups to wear to their events. When they debuted their new uniforms, team members were so excited to be covered head to toe in Bobcat orange! There i s nothing better in this world than attending a Special Olympics competition. The spirit of sportsmanship is evident in every event and the joy one feels, whether you are there as a competitor, parent, or spectator stays with you long after the competition is over. It is also that time of year when the district calendar becomes very colorful and i s stretched to capacity. This is due to the fact that there are just not enough days i n the month to schedule all of the regular activities that happen during the spring semester. Sprinkle i n a little weather and special events and our parents find themselves attending multiple events on one night. This is our neighborhood. From contests to construction, there is never a break in the action at Celina ISD. Go Bobcats! Rick DeMasters, Superintendent of Schools

Celina ISD currently has 35 Bobcat athletes on the Special Olympics' Team, and this includes athletes from kindergarten through high school. The athletes compete in four areas throughout the year, Bocce, Bowling, Basketball and Track & Field. In January, the athletes competed in basketball. For this sport, the athletes compete in three skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. The practices are typically during the school day. We have high hopes that Celina will qualify and participate in the area and State competitions in the next couple of years. Each campus does a send off for their Special Olympic athletes like they would for any other champion Bobcat! Each year, more and more staff and families are wearing our fundraising spirit shirts for our competition days. We've hosted our first fundraiser to help provide future support for our athletes' travels, food and competition needs, and we collected almost $300 this Spring. We were truly honored by the Celina Quarterback Club, who were able to support us with team uniforms for our secondary students to travel in true Bobcat form to our competitions this year. In addition, Celina Junior High and Dicks Sporting Goods have helped support us with a huge financial foundation by donating a portion of their contest winnings to our Special Olympics program. This Bobcat family is full of caring, loving and supportive individuals that make it home. Thank you, to each and every Bobcat Heart out there! Our Special Olympic Athletes recently competed in a basketball competition at Austin College at the end of January. If you haven't attended a Special Olympics competition, please make plans to attend in the future. It is an amazing day full of sportsmanship and pure joy for all in attendance!! Celina Fire Station #2 Opens in Light Farms Fire protection in Celina has expanded on the Western side of the City, there is now a second fire station in the Light Farms neighborhood. The City of Celina held a Grand Opening on January 31 for Fire Station No. 2 at 1805 Light Farms Way, Celina. The station was operational on January 24, when they responded to their first call from the new location. Construction began in 2018 with the goal of getting something completed quickly to accommodate the rapid growth. Celina Fire Chief Mark Metdker said, “Celina is spread over so much land area, it’s difficult to cover the entire city with just one ambulance, so the new station houses a second ambulance and an additional fire engine.” One of Celina FD’s two brush trucks was moved to Station 2, as well. The City received $2,557,440 dollars in grant money from the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) to staff the new station. “This opening is a commitment to a pledge made to serve Western Celina with the first-rate fire protection that we deliver elsewhere,” Chief Metdker said. “Fire Station 2 will secure the future, covering one of the fastest-growing areas of our community.”

North Texas Barbarians Mens Team The North Texas Barbarians Men's team is in it's first year, but that hasn't stopped them from asserting themselves as one of the more dominant teams in Texas. Playing in Division 4 in their first year, they hope to win a state title and move up through the ranks of Texas rugby. "We have a strong core of experienced rugby players that we have supplemented with some very special younger athletes. We also have some guys that are older and playing for the first time, so it's a good mix. On the cover of this month's OurCelina you'll see 2007 Celina High School graduate who hadn't played on Bobcat Field since his graduation. In this first men's match at home, Blatnick scored the first try for the Barbarians. Not bad for a guy who played defense in American football!

Vision: The vision of Celina Public Library is to be a premier participant in the development of an enriched, informed and connected community that lives, grows, works and plays in a quality hometown environment.

Linda Shaw, Library Director

Mission: Imagine, Explore, Discover, Learn The mission of Celina Public Library is to facilitate the increase of knowledge within the community by providing exemplary personnel, facilities, materials and services that nurture imagination, exploration, discovery and learning, changing lives through the transformative power of information and ideas.

The new year got off to a terrific start at Celina Public Library. Members of our Third Thursday Book Club for adults met to discuss the literary classic "Slaughterhouse-Five." Our popular weekly Preschool Storytime program draws dozens of youngsters (and their grownups) to the library each Friday. On Jan. 24, during a special Pajama Storytime event, kids donned their favorite sleepwear and listened to stories before pretending to wash and hang dry sets of tiny paper pajamas. Make plans to visit the library this month, when we'll have more fun in store!

We hope you'll visit the library often in 2020 for our weekly Storytime sessions, as well as special events during the upcoming spring break. Also, planning is already underway for our popular Summer Reading Program. We have an excellent selection of the latest titles for children, teens and adults to check out, as well as "Recycled Reads" available for purchase in our Book Nook. Don't have a library card? We're happy to help you get one free of charge. There is something for everyone at the library! 26
