NEWS SNIPPETS PET FRIENDLY

THE Diputacion provincial council is launching Pet Friendly, an additional tourist offer for Costa Blanca destinations. Diputacion president Carlos Mazon said that this was a niche market of growing importance which required more infrastructure, resources and public spaces that were specially adapted to pets. The provincial council has sent out questionnaires to Alicante municipalities able to offer specific services, and 20 municipalities have now expressed interest in the Costa Blanca Pet Friendly brand.

HEALTH

THE new health centre in Benidorm’s Rincon de Loix is closer to becoming reality after years of requests. The regional government’s public health department has now put out to tender a €4.7 million contract to build the centre on a plot of municipal land in Avda. Zamora.

CLIMATE CHANGE

BENIDORM has produced a pioneering plan to assist in slowing down climate change. This makes it Spain’s first municipality with a 50,000-plus population to create a Climate Change Adaption Plan (PACC) for coping with the inexorable rise in temperatures and increasingly frequent periods of torrential rain and flooding. Benidorm mayor, Toni Perez and Jorge Olcina, professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at Alicante University, presented the document to the media.

THE SUN HAS SET… ARE YOU READY TO EXPLORE?

I’m Jessie Brooke and I have been a huge part of the nightlife here in Benidorm for the past 11 years. I’ve set foot on every dance floor in every club, eaten in the best restaurants, I’ve see some incredibly talented performers and also somehow ended up in a helicopter on the rooftop of Space nightclub one evening… Don’t ask! Being a DJ, I’m always asked where to go, what to do and how much it’s going to set you back. So I thought, why not write about it all for you to browse at your leisure? Every month, I’ll be bringing you my most favourite night time hotspot and what is the best way to experience it. I’ll be sharing all the details on: what I spent, what are the do’s and don’ts and why you should be hopping onto experience the amazing nightlife Benidorm has to offer

B

ased on the Costa Blanca, Spain, Jessie Brooke began her journey at Gaydio – a radio station for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community, in 2017 as the breakfast show presenter. Coming from an interesting show-business background, including West End stage shows and national TV dramas, Jessie’s love of entertainment has been the driving force behind her involvement with dance music. Jessie’s preference for vocal and uplifting House music comes from exposure to a mix of commercial and underground dance music. After being an established radio presenter for over a decade, Jessie’s natural progression into the world of being a DJ became a no-brainer, and it has since seen her achieve

some impressive feats. Inspired by the sounds of David Guetta, Duke Dumont, Camelphat, Gorgon City, Fisher and more, Jessie’s feel-good sound and energy have seen her perform at some of the UK’s most revered club spaces. Most notably, she appeared at the opening of WHP’s new residency at The Depot, Mayfield, during Manchester Pride. You can catch Jessie Brooke performing every Friday from 8pm – 11pm at Gaydio (dj set in the mix), as well as touring for events and other bookings. One thing you can guarantee is that if Jessie is involved in a musical capacity, then her infectiously positive influence will have a definite impact. This very ethos is the foundation for her increasingly-busy pipeline, which features several high-profile LGBTQ events and festival DJ appearances. Most recently, Jessie was featured on Channel 5’s Bargain Loving Brits Abroad. As the focus on inclusivity and equality grows stronger year on year, Jessie Brooke is sure to be a name that will continue to be at the forefront of that movement – using her emphatic passion for undeniably inspiring dance music as the precipice of all that she does. Be sure to go see Jessie Brooke DJ where she is currently residing in Benidorm, Spain!

raham Boland is a much loved character in Benidorm, best known locally as one of the resident DJ’s on Fresh radio, but most famous for his role in the Channel 5 series ‘Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun’, in which he has appeared in all six series’ as the entertainment manager at Villamar campsite. A proper Brummie, his catch phrase ‘Happy Days ar kid’ uttered after every sentence, has earned him his obvious nickname especially as his face usually looks anything but happy – but looks are deceiving; Graham has the biggest heart, the kindest character and is always ready to lend a hand or raise money for charity. But like all expats on the coast, he’s a story to tell, a reason why he’s here and lot of jobs on the go! In Graham’s case he arrived in Benidorm “for a few months, after taking early retirement, to work in my sister’s bar” he says. And that was nineteen years ago … yes time flies when you’re having fun! Originally from Solihull, Graham worked at “the Rover” (obvs!) for many years but decided to take early retirement and a change in pace. But if he thought he’d be taking it easy in Spain, Graham was wrong – and like many before him Graham quickly realised he’d have to turn his hand to many a task to make ends meet. So when he spotted the opportunity to work as a DJ on a new radio station called Cool fm in 2007 he took it and it was there that his ‘Happy days’ catch phrase quickly took hold. Later Graham was asked to help launch another new station Fresh radio where he has remained ever since and can be heard every weekday afternoon from 2pm – 5pm. In the evenings, Graham hosts the entertainment at the Villamar, a five star camping resort that lies just on the outskirts of Benidorm in an area referred to locally as ‘campsite corner’.

ge Pa 5

MEET "HAPPY DAYS"!

Thousands of Brits live on the many campsites in this area, and it was whilst living on Villamar that Graham found himself a new job as the entertainment manager.

At that time the clubhouse was empty, there was just a bar, so we all used to go down to my sister’s place for karaoke which was always packed. And one day the chap who ran the bar came past and saw how busy it was and asked me if I’d put on some entertainment, so I put on a karaoke night, but he didn’t have any music equipment so I had to buy it for him!” remembers Graham with a chuckle. The night was a massive success and within a few weeks the bar owner had offered Graham five nights a week – and paid him back for the karaoke equipment! “We then started booking proper artists and the first one to perform was Dave Keegan and he refused to take any money. Dave said ‘I wanna help you grow this place’ and he did. He was so helpful passing me the numbers of other artists and we were packed every night, the campers didn’t have to leave the site and everyone was happy days!” “But it wasn’t easy – nothing in Spain ever is – but I was in the right place at the right time and with some hard graft and true Brummie spirit it worked. Happy days!” So what’s life on Mars – Villamar that is - really like Graham? “Brilliant!” he replies. “There’s always someone to talk to, I think that’s the main attraction, the community spirit, everyone looks out for each other. “And”, he adds with a wink “the entertainment is amazing!

LEISURE TIMES

The Nicholas Family on Holiday...

To sum up our adventure it was a fantastic day it took us around 4 hours as the park was not full but what a day it was well worth the money and your children will have a fantastic day out

H

i all, my name is Chris Nicholas from Porthcawl South Wales and along with my two children Cariad and Corey I’m here to give you our experience on the wonderful zoo in Benidorm Terra Natura. During our stay in Benidorm we decided to visit Terra Natura on a Saturday in February, despite the weather being a bit cloudy we had a fantastic time and this didn’t put us off. During the winter months the park is open on weekends between 10.30am and 5pm. Just a short taxi ride away we arrived at the park in no time at all (a return taxi is around 25 euros). I booked my tickets online as there was a winter discount at 20 euros each instead of the usual price so this was a great start to the day, queuing and access to the park was quick and effortless. Although we were asked to wear a mask going in, once in the park we could take them off. As soon as you walk into the Park there is a guide on what’s on, feeding of animals and shows etc there is also the chance to have your photo taken with a reptile and can be purchased from the shop. Our first stop was The Americas this is set around the American rainforest as you set off on the trail you will see Capuchin monkeys,

peccaries and capybaras, once you seen these fascinating creatures you come to the jaguar house and Avery unfortunately these where closed during our visit for improvement works. Next we discovered Europe and the Mediterranean forest here we had the chance to feed the goats and lamas and also so pigs and rabbits but the highlight was the donkey rides. Our next stop was Asia where we saw the Rhinoceros, Bengal tiger and the fabulous Asian elephant as you walk around the Asian path you come to the lion house where you get the opportunity to see them from above or down below and not forgetting the alligator swap right next door. Before our final stop we had some lunch in the Terraceratops restaurant this was very reasonably prices and food was hot tasty and plenty of it ,it cost us around 30 euros for two adult meals and a childs meal again very clean and staff where very friendly And last but not least the Pangea home of “fascinating poisonous creatures” inside the volcano there are creepy crawlies and creatures that will make your hairs stand on end some of them include Aruba rattlesnake , green tree python ,dart frog ,scorpions and spiders certain times of day you can observe the experts feeding and caring for them if you dare !

Guadalest

A hidden gem on the Costa...

G

uadalest is a small village on the Costa Blanca and it has become a very well known and much visited tourist destination. In part this is because of it’s close proximity to Benidorm which allows for tours to be offered to Guadalest as it is only 30 minutes drive from the coast. Guadalest is a very pretty and historic small town and you will see the spectacular images of Guadalest on many Costa Blanca postcards.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN GUADALEST

Guadalest is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Costa Blanca. Guadalest is a village sitting on top of a mountain. The village appears perched on a tiny pinnacle rising into the sky which makes it look absolutely amazing. This gives beautiful views of the green valley with many other mountains in the background. Guadalest is famous for two buildings. First is Guadalest castle (Castell de Guadalest) which can only be accessed by walking through a 15 foot long tunnel carved out of the rock. This is known as the Portal de San Jose. No wonder the castle was so secure! When you get through the tunnel you see the old village houses and it feels like you have entered an ancient time. You can visit the restored house of the Orduna family to get an idea of what it used to be like living in ancient times in Guadalest. The streets of Guadalest are cobbled, there are little squares, a school and an old jailhouse.

Make sure you look to the right of Guadlest and you will see beautiful views of the valley which contains a dam and reservoir – the Embalse de Guadalest, built between 1953 and 1963. The other famous building that you will often see photographed or on postcards is the white bell tower of Penon de la Alcala which rises up seemingly precariously perched on the mountainside. The village of Guadalest only has about 200 inhabitants and needless to say most of these work in tourist related jobs. You will find many shops selling souvenirs, crafts and local produce such as honey, wine, handbags etc. Guadalest also has a number of small museums many of them converted from little caves in the mountainside. A trip to Guadalest need only take half a day and you can then be back on the Costa Blanca’s beaches or by your pool but do make the effort because it is a worthwhile sightseeing trip and adds another dimension to your Costa Blanca holiday. The castle at Guadalest was built by the Moors over 1,300 years ago. In 1609 King Felipe the third ordered all the Moors to be expelled leading to an uprising after which the Moors were defeated and left Spain. Also of note was in 1848 when powder kegs blew up (the reason is not known) the castle was abandoned. The Museo de Saleros y Pimenteros (Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum) has more than 20.000 salt and pepper shakers from all over the world! A great day out for the whole family!.

TAKE THE TRAIN ALONG THE COAST FOR A GREAT DAY OUT!

LIFESTYLE WITH MICHELLE BAKER

I

f you’re looking for an affordable and fun day out whatever your age, i can highly recommend you take a day trip on the tram like we did yesterday. I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve only done this twice in the 38 years I’ve lived here - and never with our youngest children - who absolutely loved it! The tram line runs north up to Denia (although work on the line currently means you have to get off at Benissa and catch a bus), or south to Alicante. But with no particular destination in mind we decided to head south to Campello, just before Alicante - for the simple reason that it’s as far as the tram goes without having to get off to change trams. We caught the train at Benidorm Intermodal station, (which is next to the bus station so plenty of parking) and the tram passes at 5 past and 35 minutes past the hour. You need to change at El Campello if continuing to Alicante. You purchase the ticket at the machine onboard, and it cost 3.75€ one way and 6.40€ return. But you can also catch it at the main Benidorm train station (jump in a taxi and ask for ‘Estacion de tren’) The journey time took about

50 minutes and is really pretty as it goes along the coast, through tunnels, past orange trees, hidden coves, right through the town centre of Villa Joyosa and even hangs over the sea at one point! The tram stops right in the centre of Campello town and we headed down towards the coast but not before the kids spotted a brand new fabulous play park just down from the station, with fountains and grass - perfect for a picnic. Then it was just a short (but quite steep) walk to the Sandy beach and port area, with a lovely promenade flanked by nice restaurants. We had an ice cream on the front and there’s is a ‘Boulder’ pier heading right out to sea and the kids really enjoyed bounding across the rocks and seeking crabs. The tram back to Benidorm departs at 7 past and 37 to the hour and even though it started raining on our journey home, it only really added to the fun day out! The whole day cost just 30€ including the ice creams, but watching the kids simple joy at their first train ride was just priceless.
