ávea offers so much more than sea, sun and sangria. From the huge hulking mass of Montgó which extends its protective arm into the sea to the wide open natural spaces of Granadella to the south, the municipality offers plenty of scope for walkers of all ages and all abilities. Five official routes exist, almost 45km of trails opening up the beauty of both the countryside and the coastline and perfect for a brief afternoon saunter along the sea-cliffs or an energetic day-long push to mountain summits.

here are short strolls winding through the orange groves of the plain or cultural wanders through the narrow streets of the historic centre. There are more energetic rambles to the castle of Granadella or to the iconic windmills of La Plana as well as the amazing carved carverns of Cova Tallada. And there are challenging scrambles to the great open cavity popularly known as the "Eye of Montgó" and, of course, to the very summit of Montgó, standing over 750m above sea level and dominating the town to the north.

here also is plenty to offer within a short drive from the coast, including Aitana, the highest mountain in the region rising to 1,559m, and the enigmatic Barranco del Infierno, a popular hiking destination which is also known as 'La Catedral del Senderismo' - the 'Hiking Cathedral' - can be explored on the testing PR CV-147, a 15km route that boasts some 6,000 steps carved by the Moorish population that once lived in the area. So put on those boots, pull on the rucsac, fill the water bottle and get out WALKING IN JAVEA. 4

ne of the best ways to discover the beautiful landscape and coastline of Jávea is through its special network of walking paths. Taking in the wonderful natural spaces of the area, there are routes for everyone from gentle strolls along the headland of Cap Prim to the energetic climb to the summit of Montgó. Created by the Department of Tourism, the five trails total almost 45 kilometres in length and offer the visitor a wide variety of landscapes and ecosystems as well as some of the local cultural and architectural heritage. A council-sponsored free guided service for these routes is offered through the Tourist Office with almost 30 excursions throughout the year. The Mirador Challenge is a mediumdistance endurance walk of approximately 29 kilometres which links a network of 15 viewpoints located along the wonderful coastline of Jávea. The concept behind the development of the Mirador Challenge was primarily to open up this official network of "miradors" to many more people who would be otherwise unaware of their existence. The secondary aim was to create a timed endurance walk covering many different types of terrain that would complement Jávea's excellent sporting and leisure calendar. The current record is 4 hours and 19 minutes with an average time to complete the route around 6 hours. There is something for all abilities in Jávea and you don't have to be a seasoned hiker to enjoy the beauty of the area. A gentle walk around the historic centre takes in some of the most important heritage of the town, such as the fortress church of San Bartolomé and the route of the old walls which once protected the village from marauding pirates. The beautiful valley has some hidden delights within reach of everyone, including the ancient olive tree and the old wells of the ancient cattle tracks while the flat plateau of La Plana affords some fantastic views across the region whilst taking the walker to the very bottom of the path of the ascent to the summit of Montgó. For those who want a bit of adventure without too much effort, Jávea offers a number of opportunities to experience just a little bit more of

its natural beauty. The remains of Granadella Castle sit at the end of a promontory which guards the cove of the same name and can be reached by a dramatic path which clings to steep cliffs. The amazing Cova Tallada on the northern flanks of the Cabo de San Antonio can be reached using an exciting loop which also takes in the old watchtower of Torre del Gerro whilst there is an exciting steep ascent to the cavity of Cova Ampla, popularly referred to as the 'Eye of Montgó'. And of course there

are iconic windmills that sit about the town. At 752m high, the mountain of MontgĂł is the second highest peak so close to the sea in the whole of the Mediterranean area, rising dramatically from the valley floors surrounding it and dominating the skyline for miles around. From its summit, the Balearic island of Ibiza can be seen on the horizon to the east whilsttTo the south is the PeĂąon de Ifach (Calpe Rock), the Sierra Bernia and the Morro de Toix. To the west, the
Col de Rates, the Sierra de Aitana and the Val de Laguart and to the north, the gulf of Oliva and Cullera stretches up towards the city of Valencia. There are many ways to the summit and all demand complete respect, especially during the more unsettled winter months. The Costa Blanca region is not just sandy beaches and clear blue seas. The inland mountains offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the area with high mountains and deep valleys. At 1,559m, the Sierra de
Aitana is the highest peak in the province of Alicante and the obvious magnet for walkers as is the Puig de Campana with its special legend of the notch. Just a short car journey inland is the Vall de Laguart with the famous Barranco del Infierno, a popular hiking destination which is also known as 'La Catedral del Senderismo' - the 'Hiking Cathedral'. And there is even the Costa Blanca Mountain Way, a 110km hike from Villalonga to Benifato via some of the most special sights in the area.

iguel Ángel Jiménez from the first round of the 2014 Masters, wearing his trademark aviator sunglasses, is just one more example of why some compare him to "The Most Interesting Man in the World" featured in the Dos Equis commercials. We're revisiting this piece, from Masters week 2014, on Miguel Angel Jimenez today in honour of his 54th birthday. To fellow pro golfers, Miguel Angel Jimenez is known as "The Mechanic" for his love of high-performance vehicles like his red Ferrari. To the rest of us who follow the game, he's become known as "The World's Most Interesting Golfer" because of the numerous similarities to "The World's Most Interesting Man" from the Dos Equis commercials. You can't help but smile when you look at Jimenez. He's a man with his own style, the red, curly ponytail under the PING hat and the aviator shades and, of course, the fine cigar and glass of Rioja that seem to occupy each hand after he signs his scorecard. It's hard to say when exactly the comparisons started. The ads made their debut in 2006 in the United States, but it would have certainly taken time to become the wellknown part of pop culture it is today. GolfChannel.com's Jason Sobel, made the reference in a blog while at ESPN, covering the 2009 Open Championship. Jimenez held the firstround lead at Turnberry. That fictional character played by actor Jonathan Goldsmith in the Dos Equis commercials is known for the outlandish things he does. He enjoys fine cigars. His drink of choice -- naturally -- is Dos Equis beer. Overall, he seems to enjoy life more than anyone else.
"He's an enigma" We dug up an interview from www.cigaraficionado.com from 2011. In the piece, agent Chubby Chandler (who represents Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood among others), had this to say of Jimenez: "He's a man of his own and everyone appreciates him. He lives his life and plays the game the way he wants to. He never rushes anything, he savours everything. He just inhales life, and he exudes it. I've never known someone more comfortable in his own skin than Miguel."
What's better than that? "It is important, no, to love what you are doing?” asks Jimenez. "It is important to enjoy the things that life brings you. I always know that when I start to play golf, that this is what I would like to do. I become good enough to be successful and have many good things for my life." Right then, Jimenez picks up the reporter’s tape recorder from the table and holds it close to his mouth, like a microphone: "I just want to say that golf is a beautiful game and it has given me a beautiful life." During the 2013 Open Championship, Sobel asked Jimenez if he was aware of his comparisons to the World's Most Interesting Man. Jimenez provided this fantastic, insightful response: "I don't compare myself with anyone. I try to live my life and enjoy myself. I think people ought to try to do the same thing." To recap: Jimenez loves fast cars, fine cigars, fine wine, has won 20 events on the European Tour, has played on four European Ryder Cup teams, today joined Fred Couples and Ben Hogan in the Masters record books with his third-round 66 that tied for low score by a player 50 or older in the tournament and, overall, loves life. It makes you wonder: Maybe those Dos Equis commercials are loosely based on Jimenez.

a Finca Golf Course in Spain is every golfer's dream. The nearly 6500 yard course has been designed for tournaments. The natural setting not only provides majestic views of lakes, trees and mountains but it also challenges and makes the game more exciting, including have to hit a ball on an island green on the fifth. Visit many of the other neighbouring golf courses when you have completed a round at La Finca. Or perhaps visit the towns of nearby Algorfa and Orihuela. Here are a few questions and some of my thoughts on the Speed at which the game of golf is being played at; "Do you think that many people are giving up playing golf because It takes too much time to play a game?"
N
owadays why does it take so long to play a round of golf? Golfers are not as physically fit as they used to be? The use of powered golf trolleys slows down the speed of play?
The ball does not fly far or so straight as before? The clubs are more difficult to use and therefore are not so efficient. Some courses have long distances between greens and tees for the next hole? Global warming makes the weather warmer causing the players to walk slower. Courses are more difficult to play on, many with an excessive number of hazards and playing shots with long carries over water making it a time factor when taking relief drops etc. There is a lot of talk about why there are not so many people playing golf. One of the main reasons that golf is losing players is that, it takes too much time to play a round. Have handicap limits for playing the course longer or shorter using the different tee’s, the markers on the teeing grounds indicating handicap levels. To reduce the time spent on the greens, or the number of 3 putts, make greens less complicated and or have the holes cut in easier positions on the greens. There are plans to play only 9-hole rounds or play 6 or

9-hole tournaments, make shorter courses, have more Pitch and Putt but with less water hazards? Will these options speed up play or take half the time to go round the course? None of these things will have much impact if the basic speed of playing the game is not reduced. The rules of etiquette state something like, “play at a good rhythm and maintain it throughout the round”. https://www.standrews.com/play/links-webcam (Links Trust Webcam on the Old Course). A comparison between the pace of play in the 1957 and the 2015 Open Championships both played in St. Andrews over the Old Course. In July 1957 the 86th Open Championship was played over the Old Course at St Andrews. The course had been reduced two years earlier to par 72, (the 17th hole was reduced to a par 4), the course measured some 6636 yards. 295 golfers participated in the qualifying round over the Old and the New courses with 96 golfers qualifying to play in the championship proper. In the first round, played in the wind and rain saw the leader Laurie Ayton returned a score of 67, his round was completed a short time after the reigning US Open Champion Gary Middlecoff finished his round of par. Middlecoff, who completed his round in three hours 18 min-

utes had caused some controversy with other players, who regestered a complaint with the Royal and Ancient over his “slow play”. Gary Middlecoff stated, “I took three hours 18 minutes, which is not slow. Of that time I spent 20 minutes on the 13th hole where my fellow competitor and I were both bunkered and made sixes. I took two strokes to get out”. The R & A defended his speed of play stating that, “the time taken was reasonable and as such no action was necessary”. The recommended time for a group of four visitors to play the Old Course is recommended as being 4 hours. For the 2016 Open Championship the distance of the Old course was extended to 7,305 yds. To accommodate the now-a-days the top professional golfers who are called athletes. These golfers play with super High-Tec equipment carried in general by professional caddies, combined have all the information necessary for the calculation of the distances to the greens together with the location of the hole, even the contours, every slope, hump and bump. With all this assistance they now take a playing time for a competition round of 18 holes, between 4hrs.30min. To 5hrs. 30mins. Compare this to the following; We all try to watch golf on television but with the policy of showing every shot of particular players (even when they take in excess of 5 mins. to make a play), due the time taken
On the “tee” 17th. Hole Old Course St Andrews 1920’s it is fortunate that there are commercial breaks that allow us to attend to basic necessidades. Not only from watching on television but also seeing in person players on the golf course, very many players copy their idols. There seems to be a lacking in respect or knowledge for and/ or playing to the rules of the game. Are players being taught how to play and enjoy the game of golf, that it is a sport, a pastime, a hoby, a form of exercise and maybe even a way of life. A game that has been played and enjoyed in Scotland since before 1457 the game must have some kind of attraction, so why waste it now.

The Staysure Tour Comes to Benidorm
T
he Staysure Tour today announces its schedule for the 2018 season, featuring three new events in Denmark, England and Spain. The Shipco Masters Promoted by Simon’s Golf Club, Staysure PGA Seniors Championship and Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Masters are the latest additions to the calendar, which will see the Tour travel to four continents in 2018. United Kingdombased insurance company Staysure have also been named as title sponsors of the PGA Seniors Championship, which returns to the schedule for the first time since 2015. The field for the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship will be made up of Staysure Tour members, PGA professionals and a Monday qualifier will also take place prior to the event. The Staysure-sponsored tournament will take place the week after The Senior Open Presented by Rolex, which will see many of the game’s legends step foot
onto the iconic Old Course at St Andrews, from July 26-29. Bernhard Langer, who captured his record tenth Senior Major Championship at last year’s Senior Open, will bid to become the first golfer to defend the Senior Claret Jug since Christy O’Connor Jnr in 2000. Meliã Villaitana Golf Club in Alicante will host the first edition of the Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Masters from November 29-December 1, and the 2018 season will conclude in the spectacular Indian Ocean setting of Mauritius at the eighth edition of the MCB Tour Championship from December 7-9. David MacLaren, Head of the Staysure Tour, said: “We are all very excited about the forthcoming season and the first year of our landmark partnership with title sponsors Staysure. ergio started playing golf when he was a child and soon he showed he had a special talent for the game. He swung his first club when he was only 3 years old under the supervision of Víctor García, his father, teacher and mentor. Víctor had worked as a caddie at Club de Campo de Madrid and then became a professional golf player. After that, he coached at Club de Campo del Mediterraneo (Borriol), where he guided his son’s career closely watched by Consuelo, Sergio’s mother, who at the time managed the club’s pro-shop. Sergio didn’t need too much time to stand out and when he was only 12 years old everybody knew that he was going to be a special player. When he was 15 years old he made the cut in an European Tour event and only three years later he turned pro. Garcia found his place among the best very quickly. His name went around the world when he qualified for the 1999 Ryder Cup after only a few months of competition. That same year, “El Niño” made international headlines at the PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club, hitting a shot remembered all around the world. Trailing Tiger Woods by a single stroke, Sergio hit an incredible shot from an awful lie behind a tree on the 16th hole and managed to get the ball to the green. Woods ended winning that tournament, but that shot will be remembered forever. Since then, Sergio has had a brilliant career. Sergio has been in the OWGR top ten for more than a decade, winning tournaments everywhere (Europe, United States, Africa, Asia...). Sergio lives, breathes and bleeds Ryder Cup, and was a member of the European Ryder Cup team from 1999 until 2012 (excepting 2010), holding an impressive record. Besides golf, Sergio loves sports and enjoys playing tennis or football whenever he has some spare time. He is also a fan of Real Madrid and his passion for football took him to fill the dual role of President and player of Borriol CF, a Third Division team in the Spanish football league. He debuted on September 12th, 2010 in a match against Ribarroja CF. 2017 was memorable year for Sergio Garcia as he was named European Golfer of the Year. The 37-year-old Spaniard claimed the honour for the first time in his career, thanks largely to his memorable playoff win at the Masters in April.

The Golf Heritage By Tony Myles
I
n the wonderful world of golf, one can often observe some strange sights. Over just a few recent years I have witnessed a grown man, filled with frustration after a wicked slice, hurling his four-iron high into the air where it caught on the branches of a tree and remained there only to be joined by his sand wedge which was launched in a vain attempt to dislodge it. I have also watched a fellow player run at top speed after his electric trolley as it headed inexorably towards the lake. The effort was as successful as the hurled sand wedge, as the trolley rapidly slipped down the bank and disappeared under water. These are somewhat tame when compared to the sight of a tartan bedecked golfer wearing full highland dress and, as is common practise, with no nether garment to protect the personal tackle. In mid-summer in Spain this could be more acceptable but, when the ex-pat Scot proudly displays his full highland regalia, it is usually around the end of January and in celebration of the life and times of Robert Burns. I have scoured many accounts of the life of Burns but have yet to find any reference to him in relation to Golf although he was born and raised in the country that has given the world the modern game. There are those who have concluded that his classic “To a mouse” could easily have been written with the golf ball in mind. “Wee sleekit courin timorous beastie . . . .”
The Burns Day event
Despite the fact that there is no apparent link between Robert Burns and golf, an annual event in most golf calendars is the Burns Day. Living and playing in Spain has no effect on this and typical of this Gaelic celebration

is the special day at La Sella. From a few dozen ardent competitors just a few years ago Campbell Lamont has grown this into the heavily over-subscribed and most popular event of the year. And it is with uncanny accuracy that in the midst of a period of heavy rain and wind, Campbell manages to select a date on which the sun will shine from dawn till dusk. So it was this year that the golfing clans gathered once again to the sound of the lone piper. Many of them wearing tartan trews and shirts that had been in storage since last year. I was joined by a special guest from Scotland who was astonished by the sound of so many Scottish voices. “Hows it goin’ Jimmy?” was frequently heard. It is important to point out that in order to be addressed as “Jimmy” it is not necessary for your name to be Jimmy or indeed any variation of it. “Jimmy” is a useful Scottish mechanism that allows you to be sociable when you have no idea who you are addressing. The regular format is a Texas Scramble with a shotgun start so that everyone starts and finishes around the same time. With the demand for places exceeding the course capacity it was necessary for several tees to host more than one group of players. Indeed with 112 players ready to start, many tees had two or three teams. Texas Scramble – for those unfamiliar with this format it requires each team member to tee-off and then one of the drives is chosen as the location for the second shot and so on until the ball is holed out.
The After Burns
Beyond the game itself there are other traditions associated with this day. Whisky is consumed throughout the day and, whilst the event is fiercely competitive, the social aspects are the most important. The Burns supper, where a piper will lead a solemn procession which will include the pre-cooked and mandatory Haggis. Inevitably the numbers will be increased as partners arrive to learn about the unlucky missed putts and other tales of the excepted. Speeches follow the main meal and the festivities and good humour continue for several hours thereafter. It is a glorious celebration and whilst it might be somewhat perplexing it is always well supported by many non-Scottish participants. In the case of the La Sella Burns Day there were 12 different nationalities represented. Here is a date for your scheduler – January 29th, 2019. I can guarantee it will be a fine day.
The Pipeline stops at eighteen!
In the previous edition of Costa Blanca Golfer I bemoaned the paucity of young golfers joining the sport and like an ancient soothsayer I uttered a dire warning that unless some positive steps are taken to address this shortfall the
LCG Golf game must surely wither and die or become the preserve of the super-rich who are prepared to fund the few remaining clubs with vast annual fees. This month I am the harbinger of good news because there are notable exceptions to that trend. There is a growing centre of excellence in this area. It is the Academy where Dino Ferrer, Jason Seed and Michael McCarthy coaches over 100 youngsters of ages from 8 to 18 and at varying levels of skill. Dino acknowledges the issue associated with the loss of new young players entering the game and identifies it as happening once the youngsters reach 18 years This is what he had to say. “We have a wide range of students and the numbers increase every year. I have seen this at first hand as I have been involved with the Academy for the last nine years. Fifty percent of our students are under 12 years old and at this level we endeavour to ensure that the game is a great fun experience where expectations are realistic. We have to be mindful that these days there is a expectation of ‘instant gratification’ and as every golfer knows, this is very rare in our sport. The problem becomes apparent with the over
Dino Ferrer 18-year-old players, when the demands of more intense studies or other activities mean a loss of interest in Golf.” Dino also makes the point that unlike other team games, where there are other potential team members to share the blame for any failure, in golf the player is solely responsible and that is an important and often a difficult lesson for a young beginner. Over the next few months we will feature some of the youngsters who are already demonstrating a strong desire to become accomplished players. It will be refreshing to hear their views on how the game could progress in order to encourage more of their peers to stay with the sport beyond the apparent cut-off age of eighteen.
The Local Societies
For many years from the 60s through to the late 80s the opportunities to play golf were somewhat limited. Golf courses had long waiting lists and when your name
eventually became close to the top you were expected to play a round with an official who would then either approve or disapprove your membership application. This lengthy process led to the formation of the Golf Society whereby a group of keen players would book a few rounds of golf every year at various courses. The numbers involved and the fact that these days were generally midweek meant that the courses welcomed the extra business. Everywhere today the game is more easily accessed, and the vast majority of courses are very happy to accept a new golfer provided he or she can afford the fees. Nevertheless, the Society concept is still very popular and in Spain it is thriving. Many of the local groups have been in existence for decades.
The Montgo Golf Society
One of the latest additions to this list is the Montgo Golf society which was formed in 2009 with the intention of limiting the membership to 30. This proved unsustainable as demand grew and, with an ever-increasing number of guests requesting membership, that limit has been raised to 80. They play each week at the Oliva Nova course with the exception of a few “away-days” and although they are close to their membership limit they still welcome guests. Their current captain is Denise Cooper. Denise has been Captain since 26th January taking over from John Feek who was one of the founding fathers. With a very respectable handicap of 17.4 Denise loves the Escorpion course which is very tough, but nevertheless that is where Denise scored a hole-in-one. Having said that she has a strong affection for Oliva Nova where she is a member. The Montgo is a highly regarded Denise Cooper Society with a wide range of abilities. Shaun O’Gorman, with a handicap of 4.5, is the lowest for the gents and with 6.5 Gerian van Ooijen holds that title for the ladies. s we approach the start of the Golf Major season it is very difficult to make a case for a single player who could become the Major Star of 2018.
· Dustin Johnson – so consistent and seemingly unflappable. · Jon Rahm - How good it is to see a Spaniard so high in the rankings as Jon holds onto his second place. · Justin Rose - Is this going to be the year when Justin improves his consistency and claims a second Major? There are so many players with similar abilities so how do you isolate one individual. Sadly, the crystal ball is not a reliable mechanism and so I have to resort to other more mundane methods. In the heyday of Tiger Woods, it was easy, and the only question was who would be the runner-up. Then came a young Texan who also appeared to be setting the greens on fire. His maturity belied the fact that he was still a teenager. His attitude more than his skill brought him im30
mense and well-deserved credit. Not only with the general public but also amongst his fellow golfers. He was undoubtedly a strong influence in the victorious US Ryder Cup team in 2016. Jordan Spieth. Still in his early twenties and recently engaged to his childhood sweetheart. I wonder if that is the catalyst that will bring him back to his best form in the current year? He has started 2018 in a reasonable manner and claims that he is feeling confident about the challenge of the Majors. The strongest part of his game has always been his putting and when that deserted him his success also diminished. He proclaims that this is back in peak and precise condition and if that is the case, he will once again be a formidable force in the coming events. It is possible that as you read this Sergio has reproduced the startling rounds that enabled him to win the Master at Augusta last year, but I would be very surprised if Jordan Spieth is not in contention.

he Fuentes del Algar will take your breath away in more ways than one. They are spectacular with natural waterfalls and pools which are picture-postcard perfect. The water is also freezing, so be warned! You may be thinking these fountains look familiar. They featured in the TV comedy Benidorm and are also said to be the fountains for the famous (although now quite old) Timotei shampoo advert when a beautiful woman washed her long blonde hair under the waterfall. This main emblematic waterfall is a compulsory stop for photographs. The fall is more than 15 metres high with a clear stream of pure water tumbling down through the rocks into an impressive pool. You would be hard pressed to find a finer location for swimming, bathing and enjoying nature at her very finest. The waterfalls cascading down the impressive grey and green rocks are spectacular. You can take a refreshing – although freezing – swim in the crystal-clear pools of water. Visitors can also enjoy a 1.5 kilometre walk through the Algar riverbed to enjoy all the waterfalls, springs and natural pools. There is also an old dam, canal and ditches, which are still in use today. You can also find out more about the natural flora and fauna as well as visit the arboretum with typical Mediterranean trees. The waterfalls are great to visit at any time of year, although the icy cold water is particularly refreshing on those long, hot summer days. There is also a lifeguard on duty in the summer and at Easter. You can either walk along the riverbed to see the rock pools, take a picnic and simply enjoy the views, or go for a swim. The walk along the natural pools (known as tolls) is stunning as you will see five crystal-clear pools before arriving at a little oasis. The higher you climb, the colder the water in the pools so be prepared! The natural park is a haven for water lovers and nature lovers who will come across cascades of tiny streams and springs cutting through the rocks can be seen as you climb the wooden steps and bridges to the top. It’s perfect for a day out for all the family, although you will need to take care as the rocks can be slippery. This natural park is also a photographer’s paradise with perfect scenes of waterfalls, turquoise pools, a green oasis and views of the neighbouring mountains. Alongside the path to the entrance is a canal and 34

100-year-old irrigation ditches which are still being used today. There is an exhibition of native aromatic plants and herbs such as lavender, thyme and rosemary as well as the local nispero fruit. You can buy a gift as a souvenir of your visit as well. Stalls are set up selling local vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, oranges, lemons and nispero by the entrance to the waterfalls. Callosa d’en Sarria is the best place to buy succulent nispero (loquat). The natural conditions of this mountainous region are ideal for growing nispero because of the mild weather and excellent quality of the water. It is now the main producer of nisperos in Spain, which is indigenous to south-east China. Alongside the roads

around Callosa you will see massive sheets of netting in the fields protecting the nispero trees. The fruit is picked in April and May. There are five restaurants here so you can sample local cuisine from the Alicante region, including many rice dishes such as paella or fresh fish from the bay. Being between the mountain and the sea, Callosa picks the best dishes from both areas. As well as rice dishes, you can try Minxos, which are baked fish and vegetables; putxero amb pilotes, which is a meatball and vegetable stew; arros amb costra with rice and egg; sweet pastries and nispero, of course. A picnic site has been set up near one of the entrances, so you can bring your own food. About 500 metres
up the hill from the Algar waterfalls is a campsite and barbecue area, if you want to extend your stay to explore this beautiful mountainous area of Alicante. Dogs are allowed on leads except during high season, although they cannot go in the water. They are not allowed in the waterfalls at all from midJune to mid-September. The Algar waterfalls are about 15 minutes from Benidorm on the CV-715 road to Callosa d’en Sarria. Entrance is €4 for adults, €3 for seniors and students, €2 for children aged 4 to 10, and free to children under 10. From the Algar waterfalls, you can also enjoy a walk to the Bernia Fort, where you will discover a cave and a cattle corral. Information panels line the route to explain the sights along the pathway. Walkers will enjoy fabulous views of the coast stretching from Alicante in the south to Calpe as well as mountain views. You will also go past the Bardalet Cave The Bernia Fort was built in 1562 and is a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture. It was built to help the area stand firm against threatening invasions from the sea. However, it was demolished in 1612 because it was useless, being so far from the coast. You can still see the wall, well and a few arches. The 5.5-kilometre walk will take about 2 hours 30 minutes and is fairly easy, although you’ll need to take plenty of water if you are walking in the summer months, Time permitting, a visit to Callosa d’en Sarria is highly recommended. It started life as an Arab farm which was taken over by Admiral Bernat de Sarria in 1290 after the Christian Reconquest when the Moors were overthrown. You can see the Arab influence in the terraced farmland as you drive through the countryside to the town. Callosa has a beautifully-preserved historic quarter where you can visit the St John the Baptist church, the Calvary or Stations of the Cross, the public washhouse and an archaeological museum to find out more about the region. In the old town, you can pass through one of its medieval gateways, El Portal. Algar Waterfall in Callosa d’en Sarria, Alicante Also worth visiting, is the Cactus d’Algar botanical garden, which is about 1km from the waterfall. The landscaped area is home to more than 500 different species of cactus and other Mediterranean plants. 35

he most spectacular expression of the “Moors and Christians” festivities takes place in Alcoy, where a number of 13th-century events from the times of king Jaime I the conqueror, when the city was attacked by the Moorish chieftain AlAzraq and, according to legend, Saint George appeared on horseback to help the city, which swore to build a temple in his honour and to feast him, are commemorated. The festivities in Alcoy have been declared to be of international touristic interest. ON APRIL 22, 23 AND 24, Alcoy becomes a veritable explosion of joy, with thousands of white pennants with the cross of Saint George and many other green flags with the Islamic crescent moon decorate the city. Scenes, pageants and entries are held, representing the capture of the castle by the Moors and how the Christians recaptured it. The din of drums, trumpets, volleys of muskets in the thick of battle, the smell of gunpowder… impressive!

LCG Colin Harkness´ Wine Column Hola! Welcome to La Costa Golfer’s regular Wine Column! My remit is to keep readers up to date with the Spanish wine scene in general and also, specifically, with the wines from our region, here in South East Spain.
S
o, I can’t really think of a better place to start than with, not only one of the most outstanding bodegas in our area, but also one of the best wineries in the whole of Spain – Bodegas Enrique Mendoza! (http://www. bodegasmendoza.com/en/) . The origins of this leading family bodega are of interest. Following local farming tradition, founding father, Enrique Mendoza, decided to give a plot of land to his first born, the current incumbent and Head Winemaker, Pepe Mendoza - to do with as he wished. Having always been interested in grapes and the family wine, Pepe elected to plant vines. Soon, the family had 2,000 litres of wine to keep them going. And, when second son also planted vines, well, there was more than enough to give to friends also! And, yes, you’ve guessed it, when the 3rd son also planted vines, the 10,000 litres of wine now being produced, forced the family to contemplate a journey into the unknown – commercial winemaking! They’ve never looked back and little did they know that, very altruistically, they were also paving the way for others in the DO Alicante to follow. Despite the critics of the time (the generation before mine, I hastily point out) pronouncing that good quality wine was not possible in the Alicante region, Enrique and the boys set about proving them wellwrong! Perhaps those critics of yesteryear didn’t possess a map? Had they access to one, particularly a map of the Wine Denominaciónes de Origen of Spain (DO, sometimes also referred to as DOP), they should have drawn a different conclusion. Whilst Alicante land runs along a large proportion of the coast of SE Spain, and is therefore basically only just above sea level, the geographical area of the zone heads inland a considerable distance, rising significantly as it goes. Although the Mendoza bodega building is to be found in Alfaz del Pi, but a few metres above sea level, their vineyards are inland in the Villena area, 40

where the altitude approaches 800 metres. Now this is significant – those critics were correct to point out that during the growing season the temperature is way above that which vines prefer in order to produce their best grapes. However, at an altitude of 700m and above, there is a crucial and considerable drop in temperature at night time, giving the vines some respite from the furnace-like heat of the day. This means that the grapes develop perfectly in order for them to make top quality wine. Speaking of which – let’s have a look at the Bodegas Enrique Mendoza portfolio of wines. Firstly, from what we ‘wine types’ call, ‘entry level’ wines (in other words, the least expensive of the range) all the way through to the top wine(s) that the bodega offers, Mendoza represents excellent value for money! Indeed, when considering their top three wines – the equivalent of these in terms of quality, nay, excellence, made in more famous DOs (the likes of Rioja, Ribera del Duero etc), would be far more expensive,

And, secondly, it’s worth pointing out that in the excellent and wholly impartial Guía Proensa, the guide to Spain’s best 500 wines, there are only two DO Alicante bodegas represented, one wine from the other bodega, and an impressive five from Bodegas
of which come in at just about the 20€ mark. The original, much praised Santa Rosa, has been joined by the 100% Monastrell variety, Estrecho, and most recently, by the single vineyard Quebradas. Another much vaunted red is the Petit Verdot – is there a better wine in Spain made from this very French grape variety? And, it’s not only the red Mendoza wines that fit the bill. Indeed their highest 96 pointer above is the superb white Moscatel Dessert Wine, plus I love both the judiciously oaked, and the unoaked, Chardonnay. Finally, for this, the first ‘Wine a Little, You Will Feel Better’ article, a mention of Mendoza’s business development during the 21st century, so far. La Crisis, the dreadful recession suffered by us all here in Spain, affected the wine industry too, of course. Forward thinking wine producers put together plans to hopefully withstand the inevitable loss of sales, particularly in the domestic market. Some had already dabbled in the concept of Wine Tourism and found it to be, useful, revenue wise, if not, immediately lucrative. Along with others, Bodegas Enrique Mendoza embraced Enoturismo, making their tour and tasting perhaps the most envied (and copied/adapted) in the area.

Over the years I’ve tasted all of the different wines in the Mendoza range and I’ve never been anything other than delighted. There are three which are lauded as the flagship, the very top, wines of the bodega, all
I’ve taken groups as small as a dozen and as large as 30+ to the custom designed and built bodega in Alfaz - and I can tell you that it really is excellent. Twenty Euros gives you a tour, in English, if required, taking in: the small vineyard area that surrounds the bodega; the stainless steel fermentation tanks, where the wine making process occurs; the bottling plant; the crianza area, where those wines which to be fermented and/or aged in oak are kept; and finally leading to the tasting veranda! And what a tasting – a large selection of wines, including at least one of the top wines (and their luscious dessert wine paired with chocolate), all accompanied by an excellent and plentiful selection of cold hams, sausages, cheeses, bread and their own wonderful Extra Virgin Olive Oil! So, golfers – I give you Bodegas Enrique Mendoza! COMMON FAULTS AND FIXES POOR BALANCE
Balance is an invisible key to the golf swing and it is something which most players take for granted. As with most common faults, poor balance at the address position results in a chain reaction of events during the swing which manifest themselves in a variety of different shots and results. When our balance is not correct then the body will always seek to balance itself by making compensations in various ways and as we know a compensating swing is not repeatable and will lead to inconsistency.

Most Players begin the swing with too much weight on their toes. During the backswing our balance point will move back on to our heels which causes the club to come too much inside and as a result the non target leg will straighten. On the downswing it gets worse and the weight is then thrown back onto the toes causing the club to move outside the ideal swing path. The opposite will occur if we begin with too much weight on our heels and our weight and balance can also be twisted to the right heel/left toe or left heel/right toe.

The key to perfect balance is starting with your weight central; neither toes nor heels and keeping it there throughout the swing. To find this balanced point, in your address position, simply rock forward on to your toes, back on to your heels, back on to your right foot and forward on to your left. From those four extremes, you will find it easier to centralise your weight and centre of gravity. Once you have found your position you should be able to swing whilst you have your toes curled thus feeling the balance point throughout the swing. This an effective exercise to use mid round, if you start to feel imbalanced.

t´s got to be arguably the most famous coast in Spain, Costa Blanca draws millions of tourists each year. Lying on the eastern coast, the White Coast is one of those resorts where everyone can find their place under the sun, from sophisticated towns where life goes on 25 hours a day to quaint little villages where the peace and tranquility is feature. Alicante is the capital and major city of Costa Blanca , but it is Benidorm that attracts the most visitors. Benidorm is an expansive holiday playground and tourist spot in every sense of the word. The place offers every amenity a tourist could want. With a safe, kindred atmosphere, safe waters and a host of activities to do, Benidorm is ideal for family vacations. It also has a lively nightlife, with hundreds of bars and clubs catering mainly for British tourists. There are good quality, cheap bus services within the main resorts and to towns in close proximity. Taxi cabs are also good value, especially for those traveling as a group. There are also some affordable, local car rental companies, best with those wishing to explore off the beaten paths. CANELOBRE CAVES, BUSOT
T
he beautiful Canelobre Caves lie in the small town of Busot, around 24 km from Alicante. This ancient cave system is believed to be the deepest and also longest in the whole of Spain. The entrance to the cave is some 700 metres high up on the Cabezón de Oro (Big Golden Head) mountain. canolbre caves busot This mountain is also a popular location for Hiking and Rock Climbing in the Alicante region. Formed several million years ago, Canelobre Caves are famous for it’s Cathedral vault. This vault measures 70 metres in height. CANELOBRE CAVES, BUSOT, ALICANTE The caves themselves for the most part are a forever changing wonder of the natural world. Upon entry, the caves open up into a spectacular underground cavern. The cavern is where minerals have been deposited to resemble “Candelabras”. And thus where the caves name originates. CANELOBRE CAVES Canelobre Caves Lighting and Guided Tours The natural appearance of the caves is enhanced using an intricate lighting system. The lighting system and natural acoustics also add to the Cathedral-like atmosphere. The caves often play host to musical events and concerts. Thanks to the high altitude and excellent acoustics. You will also encounter the stage used for concerts upon your visit. There are many guided tours throughout the day as the tour guides take you on a 40 minute walk through the caves. These tours also provide you with useful information as you proceed. There are usually English speaking guides in attendance. The guides will explain the history and also the general layout of the caves. OPENING TIMES AND TICKET PRICES WINTER VISITING TIMES 1st September – 30th June Monday – Closed.
