Near Denia, we have Oliva Nova, considered by many to be Seve’s best design, and La Sella, another fine course. The Alicante area has 4 excellent courses in Bonalba, Alenda, Alicante North and El Plantio. Further south, the resort of Torrevieja is within easy reach of the courses of Villamartin, Campoamor, Las Ramblas and the splendid La Finca. 5

FROM THE FASHION POINT OF VIEW, it is instructive to know what is actually selling— what consumers are buying—as opposed to what styles are being pushed. Here is a snapshot of what is happening on John Daly´s colourful world.

Y

OU, TOO, CAN LOOK LIKE JOHN DALY. Daly, who tends to stand out in any circumstances, can be seen a mile away. His electric colouful trousers come from the aptly named LoudMouth Golf company, which specializes in old-fashioned, in-yourface golfing trousers of merrily questionable taste: Hawaiian prints; “shagadelic” patterns; disco-ball designs; pink and green awning stripes; and Daly’s raspberry argyles, which go for $89.95. The company’s chief executive, Larry Jackson, said in a statement yesterday, “We’re not your ordinary golf pants,” said Jackson. “But then, who wants to be ordinary?” The company’s philosophy is “pants that go from fairway to party.” Its founder, Scott “Woody” Woodworth, is a graduate of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design who got fed up with the sedate state of contemporary golf style. With a name like that, he can’t be all bad. 7

In the next issue(March) we have an interview and course report with the El Plantio Golf Resort owner, he has been very active in getting some of the legal conditions regarding the use of land. The influence of golf in the rovince of Alicante is growing, every day there is more interest in the sport and the benefits of golf oriented tourism. The first course to be opened in the province was for the Villamartin Golf Club in 1972 situated in the town of Torrevieja, Orihuela. 62 kms. the N-332 road from Alicante – Cartagena down the coast to the south from the Airport of Alicante/Elche the then costal road to the Mar Menor. This was followed 1974, by the Don Cayo Club de Golf in the picturesque coastal town of Altea, 58 kms. up the same coastal road to the north from the airport. The interest in golf in the area was about to start and flourish. This was the result of the development of La Manga Golf Resort on the Mar Menor. The numerous new house owners and golfers that were having to travel by road, the 150 kms. south to the La Manga Golf Resort close to Cartagena in the Provence of Murcia, from the airport in Alicante. The number of spectators from all over Europe and farther afield that came to watch the best national and international golf players, playing in the Spanish Open from 1972 to 1977 (In 1975 won by Arnold Palmer). All of this helped to promote golf in the Provence. 10

All of this together with the construction of golf courses and the appealing concept to golfers from all over Europe, to play golf in the warm winter sunshine. There are now 23 Golf Course facilities; Three 9-hole and One 18-hole Pitch& Putt courses. One 11-hole Par 72 course (9 + 2 + 7). Four 9-hole Par 36, Eleven 18-hole par 72 courses. One complex with 18-hole par 72 and 9-hole par 3 courses. One complex with 27 holes. 18 Par 72 + 9 Par 36 courses. One Complex with 36 Holes 18 Par 72 + 18 Par 62 courses.

THE SUN AND YOUR SKIN

T

orrential downpours and lingering black clouds have left many of us wondering when summer will finally arrive. We all love sunshine, indeed most of us will cite the weather as one of the main reasons for packing up our homes and moving to Spain. In contrast with many of life’s other pleasures, the good news is that sunshine can be good for you. It plays a role in the production of vitamin D, it is good for our psychological well being and scientists have now discovered that it can actually prevent certain forms of cancer. …….Yes, there is a ‘but’ coming! Apart from causing wrinkles, allergic rashes, unsightly areas of pigmentation, damage to the immune system and cataracts, the sun can kill you. Rates of skin cancer are increasing all the time. In the UK alone, where, as we are all know , there is not a lot of sunshine, there are some 50,000 new cases each year. Living in Spain, we have to be extra careful when it comes to sun safety. Anybody can develop skin cancer, however you are more at risk if you have: Pale skin | Blonde, red or light brown hair | Been treated for skin cancer | A family member who’s had skin cancer. There are several different types of skin cancers, the most dangerous being malignant melanoma. It is very important to be aware of changes to moles that could indicate a possible malignancy. Look out for:ASYMMETRY: one half of the abnormal skin area is different than the other half. BORDERS: irregular borders. COLOUR: varies from one area to another with shades of tan, brown, or black (sometimes white, red, blue). 18

DIAMETER: usually (but not always) larger than 6 mm in size (diameter of a pencil eraser). Any skin growth that bleeds or will not heal There are steps that we can take to prevent skin cancer which include staying out of the sun when it is most intense, between 10am and 4pm. If you are unable to stay out of the sun during these times make sure that you are covered up. Men are more at risk of developing skin cancers on the scalp and ears due to lack of hair so, ladies, try to inspect your men regularly! Also, some medications can make your skin more sensitive to the sun so check with your Farmacia. Apart from avoiding sun exposure, our best weapon against this disease is sunscreen but it has to be used properly. Also remember that sunburn in children can lead to skin cancer in later life.

TIPS FOR APPLYING SUNSCREEN

•Always use SPF 15 or higher with UVA and

UVB protection. •Do not use after expiry date. •Apply the recommended amount evenly to all uncovered skin, especially your lips, nose, ears, neck, hands, and feet. •Check the label for the correct amount of time to apply it before you go out. •If the label doesn’t give a time, allow about 15 to 30 minutes. •If you don’t have much hair, apply sunscreen to the top of your head, or wear a hat. Reapply often, read the label to see how often. •Give babies and children extra care in the sun. Ask a doctor before applying sunscreen to children under 6 months old. •Apply sunscreen to children older than 6 months every time they go out. •Always re-apply after swimming. •Even during winter months, and cloudy days the sun can still cause damage, so be aware. Sunscreen is not just for the summer.

Mind Over Matter? IN SIX MAGIC WORDS

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Simone Segal, an author, writer and researcher of profound knowledge and truths of the world we live in. Im very happy to have been given this opportunity to be here and share my insights with you! So,let's start with six magical words. There are six magic words and when you fully understand the concept of them, and live by them, you'll be in the business of creating magic, not only in your game of golf, but too in every aspect of your life. You see, not only are these six words magical they too are a scientific fact! Through research i have come to know that the greatest philosophers might not agree in all things, but they do agree on these six life changing words. What I'm going to tell you very few know, it's a secret knowledge in which only the elite, and those who search for truths of this world know about.

SO WHAT ARE THESE SIX MAGICAL SCIENTIFIC WORDS? "WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT" Yep, there you have them, and I'm going to tell you how to use them. You are the sum total of every thought you've ever had up until now. When you realize that you are master of your thoughts, you then have the power to change them, and by changing the way you think, you can change your game, in fact you can change for the better every aspect of your life.

SO HOW DOSE IT WORK? Every thought you have puts you into a vibration frequency. For example, if you wake up in the 22

SIMONE SEGAL Natural Healing, Mind, Body & Spirit Author, researcher, Spiritual healer morning thinking positive thoughts, like a radio station you are tuned into that frequency and in that frequency you attract more of the same to you, i.e.....great things, great people, great health. Same goes when your thinking negative thoughts, you'll be attracting all negative to you...bad things, bad people, bad health, and for sure a bad game of golf! I'm going to tell you the exact magical key vibration in which to be in, to live in, that will attain all your dreams.

AND THIS IS HOW If you are wishing for something or wanting for something you will always be in the wishing and wanting frequency and there you'll stay. The magical frequency to be in is the " I am" frequency!

SO WHAT IS THE " I AM" FREQUENCY AND HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The I am frequency is to believe, or more than believe, it's to know, that you are all you wish to be, even when you are not. All those wants and wishes, your desires, you have to "think" believe, to know they are already true. You might call this self delusion and you'd be right! For that's where the true magic lies. Have you ever wondered how some lucky people keep getting lucky over and over? Wether they are consciously aware of it or not, they are living in a positive vibe and keep getting more of the same thing. And know this, remember when something goes wrong and one bad thing after another happens, why? Negative thoughts breeds all bad things to you, your on a roll which ever way. You have to think you already are exactly who

t help, contact me at honing 0034 638 511 910

you want to be, before you are,and without a shadow of doubt you have to believe you already have all you wish for. Why? Because in this thought vibration you attract, remember, more of the same! So, if it comes to mind over matter, take a look around you and see that all matter in front of your eyes was first created by a thought. And as matter of fact, your mind, your thoughts, are creating you, your game, and your life, period! Your going to need a lot of passion, if your not full of it you might as well give up reading this article now! You also need to use your willpower, when used one feels Empowered! Create a habit of becoming consciously aware of your thoughts. When you realize your thinking in a negative vibration, change your thoughts. Repetition, the greatest achievers of this world got to where they want to be by repeating their positive mind set and talents countless times over. Become the best you can be at everything you do. You'll feel inspired and your actions will be an amazing inspiration for others. Act the part you wish to be. When you see a great actor in a film, he is outstanding because he truly believes he has become that character. What does become mean? It means to come into being. When you think, act, believe and know you are the best at your game, and mix it with passion, willpower, repetition, and being the best you can be at all you do, you can not fail! Put on your blinkers and only focus on being your best. Never allow a bad shot or episode in life to affect your thinking pattern, only think how you could improve that shot, your life, and do it with a smile!

A WONDERFUL AFFIRMATION TO USE IS THIS "Every moment of every day I'm getting better in every way!" When you repeat this affirmation over and over, you'll transfer that message from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind. Like your legs move forward to walk you don't have to think about moving them, the same when you breath, thank god you don't have to think about taking your next breath. By repeating this affirmation over and over every day you'll be planting that message in your subconscious mind. Which means that every moment of every day, you "will" get better in every way! Your happiness , your health, and your golfing skills will undoubtedly improve! This information is so profound and true, but, I ask that you don't believe me, because more important is to know, and you can only know truth, when you decide to change the way you think. When you do, and act on these six magical scientific words, you'll be creating magic!

"Become the best you can be at everything you do. You'll feel inspired and your actions will be an amazing inspiration for others". You can obtain a copy of this inspirational book at www.thegiftifonlyyouknew.com 50 TRILLION CELLS 50 trillion cells, I hold within my skin And I am the governor As to what state they’re in Like fractals they are mini me’s They have my every function What I think and how I feel They act on that assumption My very own community That I am in control I’ll guide my little worrier cells With my heart and with my soul You see, what ever thoughts I hold My cells react, and do exactly as they’re told If my mind is in a state of war My cells react and fight the more But when I’m thinking with a loving heart My cells will act and play that part Man is master of his thoughts Yes you are in control What you’re thinking to be true Makes you up as a whole Your environment causes your perceptions What is it that you’re seeing? If it’s not good, change it now And you will change your very being Let love, happiness, health and wealth Dominate every thought And every single cell in you Will act exactly as they ought! 50 trillion cells in you Awaiting your command Govern wise my friend believe And reach your promised land!!!

I bring to you scientific facts found today that poetically merge with spirituality, and shockingly changes history and science altogether! “The Gift if only you knew” Motivation & inspiration page after page. S

ergio started playing golf when he was a child and soon he showed he had a special talent for the game. He swung his first club when he was only 3 years old under the supervision of Víctor García, his father, teacher and mentor. Víctor had worked as a caddie at Club de Campo de Madrid and then became a professional golf player. After that, he coached at Club de Campo del Mediterraneo (Borriol), where he guided his son’s career closely watched by Consuelo, Sergio’s mother, who at the time managed the club’s pro-shop. Sergio didn’t need too much time to stand out and when he was only 12 years old everybody knew that he was going to be a special player. When he was 15 years old he made the cut in an European Tour event and only three years later he turned pro. Garcia found his place among the best very quickly. His name went around the world when he qualified for the 1999 Ryder Cup after only a few months of competition. That same year, “El Niño” made international headlines at the PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club, hitting a shot remembered all around the world. Trailing Tiger Woods by a single stroke, Sergio hit an incredible shot from an awful lie behind a tree on the 16th hole and managed to get the ball to the green. Woods ended winning that tournament, but that shot will be remembered forever. Since then, Sergio has had a brilliant career. Sergio has been in the OWGR top ten for more than a decade, winning tournaments everywhere (Europe, United States, Africa, Asia...). Sergio lives, breathes and bleeds Ryder Cup, and was a member of the European Ryder Cup team from 1999 until 2012 (excepting 2010), holding an impressive record. Besides golf, Sergio loves sports and enjoys playing tennis or football whenever he has some spare time. He is also a fan of Real Madrid and his passion for football took him to fill the dual role of President and player of Borriol CF, a Third Division team in the Spanish football league. He debuted on September 12th, 2010 in a match against Ribarroja CF.

RACE TO CARNOUSTIE

If you are in it – YOU can win it!

By Tony Myles • Golf equipment - from a box of tees to a full set of the latest technology

•Testing facilities with an in-house driving range. • Competitions for golfers at all levels. • Club Fitting with Trackman 4

The Campbell Lamont Organisation Campbell Lamont is the owner of the leading golf retail company in the Costa Blanca and this market leadership is due to his careful business expansion over the last ten years and the provision of unmatched customer service. From very early days when he shared an office with the La Sella Golf Academy, he has grown his company to a position where Campbell Lamont Golf is the default option for all golfers in the region.

The Golf Superstore in Ondara

His business is based in the Golf Superstore in Ondara, where the Retail Park and Mall continues to expand every year. From there Campbell offers an enormous range of fashion items together with everything that the golfer requires for the sport at any level.

These include

•Green fees for any course in Spain and beyond. •Holiday bookings •Tuition • Golf fashion wear for male and female golfers. 28

• Club Repairs The Early days

Just ten years ago and fresh from Glasgow, Campbell started the business by providing a service for golfers wishing to book tee times at any of the local Spanish courses. Today this is still a fundamental element of the most successful golf business on Spain and in 2017 CL Golf booked more than 40,000 green fees for very satisfied clients. This led to demands for more leisure activities and subsequently a new business activity for his company, as an increasing number of golfers look to Campbell to organize golfing holidays. CL Golf Holidays is now a full member of IAGTO The International Association of Golf Travel Operators and CL Golf is also an official accredited Valencian Travel Agent. This means that every day hundreds of golfers from Spain and other European countries entrust Campbell with the reservations for their entire golfing experience from a single tee time to a full fivestar golf vacation based in any Golf resort anywhere in the world.

The Campbell Lamont Leagues

As the business developed so Campbell started to provide an increasing number of competitions. Starting with a regular event for the local golf societies in the Costa Blanca.

LCG Golf In 2011 the inaugural event in the Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues was held and it attracted entries from hundreds of participants Initially it was a competition intended to produce the best single player from all the local golf societies. It proved overwhelmingly popular and subsequently became a Pairs competition with the best two players from every society meeting in a local Grand Final competing for an all-expenses-paid two days at the La Sella Golf Resort. From these small beginnings, this competition now welcomes entries from every part of Spain with numerous local knockout competitions now required to determine the national winners who will go forward to the Grand Final. Over the last five years these Spanish based golfers have been joined by the winners of similar Campbell Lamont competitions in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and various Scandinavian countries who now visit Spain in their thousands every year.

And it is GO! GO! GO! - The RACE is ON!!!

Now for the first time this exciting competition has been further enhanced by the RACE TO CARNOUSTIE Carnoustie is the location for this year’s OPEN and it has the reputation of being the course that provides the toughest test of golf. The Open has been held at this venue on seven occasions starting in 1931, but it has been a golf venue for over four hundred years and at nearly 7500 yards, its narrow fairways and strategically placed bunkers will punish any shot that is less than perfect. Is there a keen golfer who would not want to test his game on that course and especially being able to do so immediately following the Major event in October? Read more about it here - https://www. theopen.com/Heritage/OpenVenues/ Carnoustie

This is what is on offer from Campbell

Over the next few months there will be six events hosted at different courses in the Costa Blanca. With the best pairs winning an incredible package.

• Return Fights to Scotland to join up with the winners of the Scottish qualifying events.

•Two nights in the Carnoustie Hotel •Presentation dinner •Round of golf to warm up at a local course •Competition round at Carnoustie Championship Course.

Each of the six events will produce two pairs who will advance to the Spanish Final. This means that twelve pairs will contest the Spanish Final at La Sella on 1st September with the eventual winners being presented with the Race to Carnoustie package.

Who can take part?

Any golfer male or female with a valid handicap provided by any official source including your local golf society. The upper limit is 24 for men and 28 for women. The accompanying advert shows the details of the venues, dates, times and costs. One other important point is that there is no restriction on how many games an individual can play. So, if you narrowly miss out at one venue you can join in at any of the others. Jose Maria Olazabal has described it as “One Of The Best” Golf Competitions in Europe” and nobody who has taken part would argue. This could be your year. Don’t hesitate! You could be the golfer who wins the RACE TO CARNOUSTIE!

Golf in 2050 - What will it look like? The Millennials. Where are they?

When you are enjoying your regular four-ball and wondering why it takes the group ahead of you such a long time to clear the green, it is hard to consider that anything will ever change about the game. It appears the same as it was last week and last year and will probably be the same this time next year. Pundits will chatter about various issues but much of it will appear irrelevant as you line up your third putt. However, the fact is that a change is being forced upon your favourite sport. That change is due to the low numbers of youngsters entering the game and without that conveyer belt of players how can the game survive? I have discussed this topic with friends and fellow golfers from various areas and I am frequently surprised that there is a reluctance to accept that this as a problem. In fact, one visitor from a club in the south of England proudly proclaimed that his club had a waiting list. This doesn’t address the problem, as undoubtedly there will always be some clubs which will be immune to any significant reduction in participants. These are generally the domain of the well-heeled golfer who can afford to budget for several tens of thousands of Pounds or Euros every year. This is light years away from the grass roots of the game and will only reinforce the image that golf is elitist and beyond the reach of many potential players.

Where does the problem lie?

I posed the question to Paul Tolley who is the professional at Oliva Nova. “I agree that it is a problem and the difficulty is that many of the older established cubs are quite happy with the situation as it is now and don’t perceive any major issue. In fact, I am aware of one club where there was a project proposed to 30

By Tony Myles

create a Young Golfer activity and the members voted it down as they ‘didn’t want a load of kids running around’. I was introduced to golf when I was just nine years old and I benefitted from two older brothers and a father who were all keen and expert golfers. I don’t see much of that these days. I don’t see the pull-through by the families that there once was.” I asked Paul what steps, if any, were being taken in the local Spanish clubs. “Each year at Oliva Nova we have a number of Open Door days when parents can bring their kids to try any of the activities here free-of-charge. In addition, we have a Kids Club which is organised through the Oliva Nova Hotel and various special days in association with the local schools. I know that almost without exception, all the Costa Banca clubs are active in very similar ways.”

Beyond these specific programmes, how do we leverage young players away from their iPhones?

Larger holes, games with footballs. All of these gimmicks have failed to stem the losses and the majority of true golfers would deplore any attempt to introduce such radical changes.

So what else can be done to stimulate the growth of the game in the younger generation?

According to Paul there is a need for kids to be given a speedier reward, so that for new starters he would recommend a shorter tee where a shot of around 100 metres can land on the green. This would mean that more younger players would find the game less daunting and would be encouraged to return and play again, until such times as they were playing the full course and gaining the same degree of satisfaction that they do from their portable video games and social media.

What do you think? What else can be done? Do we need to do anything or will it all resolve itself in good time?

If having read this article, you have any comments or suggestions, then do not hesitate to share them. You can write to the following email address: sergiolacostagolfer@mail.com. Next month I will be looking at some examples that are “bucking the trend”. Tony

Guadalest

A hidden gem on the Costa...

G

uadalest is a small village on the Costa Blanca and it has become a very well known and much visited tourist destination. In part this is because of it’s close proximity to Benidorm which allows for tours to be offered to Guadalest as it is only 30 minutes drive from the coast. Guadalest is a very pretty and historic small town and you will see the spectacular images of Guadalest on many Costa Blanca postcards. 34

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN GUADALEST Guadalest is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Costa Blanca. Guadalest is a village sitting on top of a mountain. The village appears perched on a tiny pinnacle rising into the sky which makes it look absolutely amazing. This gives beautiful views of the green valley with many other mountains in the background. Guadalest is famous for two buildings. First is Guadalest castle (Castell de Guadalest) which

LCG Costa Blanca Town Focus can only be accessed by walking through a 15 foot long tunnel carved out of the rock. This is known as the Portal de San Jose. No wonder the castle was so secure! When you get through the tunnel you see the old village houses and it feels like you have entered an ancient time. You can visit the restored house of the Orduna family to get an idea of what it used to be like living in ancient times in Guadalest. The streets of Guadalest are cobbled, there are little squares, a school and an old jailhouse. Make sure you look to the right of Guadlest and you will see beautiful views of the valley which contains a dam and reservoir – the Embalse de Guadalest, built between 1953 and 1963. The other famous building that you will often see photographed or on postcards is the white bell tower of Penon de la Alcala which rises up seemingly precariously perched on the mountainside. The village of Guadalest only has about 200 inhabitants and needless to say most of these work in tourist related jobs. You will find many shops selling souvenirs, crafts and local produce such as honey, wine, handbags etc. Guadalest also has a number of small museums many of them converted from little caves in the mountainside. A trip to Guadalest need only take half a day and you can then be back on the Costa Blanca’s beaches or by your pool but do make the effort because it is a worthwhile sightseeing trip and adds another dimension to your Costa Blanca holiday. The castle at Guadalest was built by the Moors over 1,300 years ago. In 1609 King Felipe the third ordered all the Moors to be expelled leading to an

uprising after which the Moors were defeated and left Spain. Also of note was in 1848 when powder kegs blew up (the reason is not known) the castle was abandoned. The Museo de Saleros y Pimenteros (Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum) has more than 20.000 salt and pepper shakers from all over the world! Andrea Ludden has collected for more than 30 years, and has another museum in the USA, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, which has another 20.000! The museum is at Avenida de Alicante 2, El Castell de Guadalest, 03517 Alicante, directly on the main parking area, and is totally accessible, with no stairs or climbs. It is entertaining, educational, and apt for the whole family. The children love it! 35

THE MUSEUM

The Castle of Santa Bárbara, Alicante

You can't fail to notice this impressive castle situated on an outcrop over looking Alicante City. It's one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and covers the complete summit of the Benacantil Mountain. Originally built by the Moors in the 10th century, the castle received its name from the conquest of King Alfonse the Wise that took place on 4th December 1248: Saint Barbara's day. Over the following centuries it was developed and extended leaving it with three main areas all dating from different eras. HOW TO GET THERE If you're feeling energetic you can walk along the road that winds around the back of the mountain, or if you're short of time you can drive. The easier way, incurring a small charge (but free if you are disabled or an EU senior citizen) is via an elevator going up through a tunnel carved out of the rock. You find the entrance opposite the Postiguet beach area. OPENING HOURS - Winter (1 October to 31 March): 10:00 to 20: 00h. Every day. - April, May, June and September from 10:00 to 22: 00h. MARQ is an archaeology museum which is dedicated to displaying its collection in a traditional way; as a collection of classified and catalogued finds. MARQ is a project faced with the challenge of being the first archaeological museum of the 21st century.

A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY

The development and formation of a people is influenced greatly by its past, especially one that is shaped by the presence of various ancient civilizations. It is therefore essential that this past is made known and passed on to all those people who visit MARQ. As well as being a professional institution and an important educational space, the new Provincial Archaeology Museum of Alicante also provides a spectacular and entertaining experience. The museum offers visitors the opportunity to find out about the various methods and techniques that are associated with archaeology. These are explained in three galleries dedicated to: Field Archaeology, Urban Archaeology and Underwater Archaeology. Various dioramas, audio-visual presentations and interactives provide visitors with a detailed insight into the techniques that archaeologists use to discover the past. These provide valuable information which is displayed in an attractive and didactic way. Admission in 2017 was only €3. MARQ is also responsible for the Lucentum site near San Juan and a small roman fish farming site OPENING HOURS: Monday Closed. Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 2pm, 6pm - 10pm, Sunday 10am - 2pm

The Mediterranean Diet

f you're looking for a heart-healthy eating plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you. The Mediterranean diet incorporates the basics of healthy eating — plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps a glass of red wine — among other components characterizing the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Most healthy diets include fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, and limit unhealthy fats. While these parts of a healthy diet are triedand-true, subtle variations or differences in proportions of certain foods may make a difference in your risk of heart disease. BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. The diet has been associated with a lower level of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the "bad" cholesterol that's more likely to build up deposits in your arteries. In fact, a meta-analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality as well as overall mortality.

The Mediterranean diet is also associated with a reduced incidence of cancer, and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extravirgin olive oil and mixed nuts may have a reduced risk of breast cancer. For these reasons, most if not all major scientific organizations encourage healthy adults to adapt a style of eating like that of the Mediterranean diet for prevention of major chronic diseases. THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET EMPHASIZES: Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts •Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil. •Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods. •Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month. •Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week. •Enjoying meals with family and friends. •Drinking red wine in moderation (optional). •Getting plenty of exercise. •Fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. 39

LCG Colin Harkness´ Wine Column Hola! Welcome to La Costa Golfer’s regular Wine Column! My remit is to keep readers up to date with the Spanish wine scene in general and also, specifically, with the wines from our region, here in South East Spain.

S

o, I can’t really think of a better place to start than with, not only one of the most outstanding bodegas in our area, but also one of the best wineries in the whole of Spain – Bodegas Enrique Mendoza! (http://www. bodegasmendoza.com/en/) . The origins of this leading family bodega are of interest. Following local farming tradition, founding father, Enrique Mendoza, decided to give a plot of land to his first born, the current incumbent and Head Winemaker, Pepe Mendoza - to do with as he wished. Having always been interested in grapes and the family wine, Pepe elected to plant vines. Soon, the family had 2,000 litres of wine to keep them going. And, when second son also planted vines, well, there was more than enough to give to friends also! And, yes, you’ve guessed it, when the 3rd son also planted vines, the 10,000 litres of wine now being produced, forced the family to contemplate a journey into the unknown – commercial winemaking! They’ve never looked back and little did they know that, very altruistically, they were also paving the way for others in the DO Alicante to follow. Despite the critics of the time (the generation before mine, I hastily point out) pronouncing that good quality wine was not possible in the Alicante region, Enrique and the boys set about proving them wellwrong! Perhaps those critics of yesteryear didn’t possess a map? Had they access to one, particularly a map of the Wine Denominaciónes de Origen of Spain (DO, sometimes also referred to as DOP), they should have drawn a different conclusion. Whilst Alicante land runs along a large proportion of the coast of SE Spain, and is therefore basically only just above sea level, the geographical area of the zone heads inland a considerable distance, rising significantly as it goes. Although the Mendoza bodega building is to be found in Alfaz del Pi, but a few metres above sea level, their vineyards are inland in the Villena area, 40

where the altitude approaches 800 metres. Now this is significant – those critics were correct to point out that during the growing season the temperature is way above that which vines prefer in order to produce their best grapes. However, at an altitude of 700m and above, there is a crucial and considerable drop in temperature at night time, giving the vines some respite from the furnace-like heat of the day. This means that the grapes develop perfectly in order for them to make top quality wine. Speaking of which – let’s have a look at the Bodegas Enrique Mendoza portfolio of wines. Firstly, from what we ‘wine types’ call, ‘entry level’ wines (in other words, the least expensive of the range) all the way through to the top wine(s) that the bodega offers, Mendoza represents excellent value for money! Indeed, when considering their top three wines – the equivalent of these in terms of quality, nay, excellence, made in more famous DOs (the likes of Rioja, Ribera del Duero etc), would be far more expensive,

You will feel better!

LCG Colin Harkness´ Wine Column probably double the price! And, secondly, it’s worth pointing out that in the excellent and wholly impartial Guía Proensa, the guide to Spain’s best 500 wines, there are only two DO Alicante bodegas represented, one wine from the other bodega, and an impressive five from Bodegas

of which come in at just about the 20€ mark. The original, much praised Santa Rosa, has been joined by the 100% Monastrell variety, Estrecho, and most recently, by the single vineyard Quebradas. Another much vaunted red is the Petit Verdot – is there a better wine in Spain made from this very French grape variety? And, it’s not only the red Mendoza wines that fit the bill. Indeed their highest 96 pointer above is the superb white Moscatel Dessert Wine, plus I love both the judiciously oaked, and the unoaked, Chardonnay. Finally, for this, the first ‘Wine a Little, You Will Feel Better’ article, a mention of Mendoza’s business development during the 21st century, so far. La Crisis, the dreadful recession suffered by us all here in Spain, affected the wine industry too, of course. Forward thinking wine producers put together plans to hopefully withstand the inevitable loss of sales, particularly in the domestic market. Some had already dabbled in the concept of Wine Tourism and found it to be, useful, revenue wise, if not, immediately lucrative. Along with others, Bodegas Enrique Mendoza embraced Enoturismo, making their tour and tasting perhaps the most envied (and copied/adapted) in the area.

oza

Mendoza! Of these, the lowest score is 90, the highest – 96 points!

Wine Tourism

Over the years I’ve tasted all of the different wines in the Mendoza range and I’ve never been anything other than delighted. There are three which are lauded as the flagship, the very top, wines of the bodega, all

I’ve taken groups as small as a dozen and as large as 30+ to the custom designed and built bodega in Alfaz - and I can tell you that it really is excellent. Twenty Euros gives you a tour, in English, if required, taking in: the small vineyard area that surrounds the bodega; the stainless steel fermentation tanks, where the wine making process occurs; the bottling plant; the crianza area, where those wines which to be fermented and/or aged in oak are kept; and finally leading to the tasting veranda! And what a tasting – a large selection of wines, including at least one of the top wines (and their luscious dessert wine paired with chocolate), all accompanied by an excellent and plentiful selection of cold hams, sausages, cheeses, bread and their own wonderful Extra Virgin Olive Oil! So, golfers – I give you Bodegas Enrique Mendoza! Paul Tolley Performance Golf Coaching Total Performance Coaching - Change the way you think, feel and play the game

W

elcome to Paul Tolley Performance Golf Coaching. Have you ever wondered why you cannot reproduce the same level of performance on the golf course as you do on the practice area? Why does playing golf how you want seem so hard? The traditional and current culture of golf instruction concerns itself almost solely with the subject of swing mechanics and technique. It promises such things as greater distance or the perfect swing. This leads golfers to think and believe that this is the only part of the game of golf that matters. This is simply not true. Players with technically perfect swings still hit bad shots and they always will. Playing the game of golf is far more involved than only having good technique. Unfortunately, golfers are being taught only part of the game and not what is necessary to raise their level of performance or their level of enjoyment. My philosophy is different and my aim is to help you learn how to play the game and move the focus of attention from swing mechanics to you the individual and consider every element of your game. My philosophy incorporates all of these elements and a number of "non-negotiable skills" that are essential for golfers seeking to achieve their performance potential and their desired level of enjoyment. These skills can be evaluated, prioritized and personalized for each golfer bearing in mind their individual characteristics, abilities and desires. How this is achieved is entirely dependent on the individual. More details are available on the Overview and Philosophy section of the website. Using my philosophy, I promise to make you a better player of the game. My objective is to ensure that you learn the "non-negotiable skills" that you personally need and require to "play golf" and not the traditional and outdated thoeries that do not give you what you want and serve only to add to your confusion and frustration when playing this wonderful game.

e all know how the areas around Costa Blanca and Costa Calida offer no shortage of fun as a result of the glorious climate and the beautiful beaches. But what can we do when the cooler months roll in? Thankfully the fun never stops in the south of Spain as there’s everything from chic gastro bars to decadent nightclubs and stylish casinos to help you get through the Spanish winter! We’ve already shown how the Browns gastrobar has quickly risen to become one of the stars in La Zenia’s nightlife scene. And whether it’s investigating the fine dining options at Aticcook or checking out the tapas at the Iberia Gastrobar in Javea, you’ll never run out of options for delicious food in the area. Those who fancy relaxing with a cocktail in some seriously stylish surroundings should head to Bela Dama in Moraira to try a romantic drink with some pretty views. And the Belroy Lounge in Benidorm always provides a great place to grab a low-key drink and enjoy the wide range of musical offerings that range from sultry jazz to some great Cuban and Latin sounds. Obviously it’s Benidorm that really excels in nightlife entertainment with the clubs on Avenida Communitat Valencia giving us all plenty of excuses to hit the dancefloor. And even if you tire of the beats, then the Casino Mediterraneo is located nearby and it can give you the chance to play the real-life versions of casino games like blackjack that you know from gaming websites like InterCasino. Other more relaxing nightlife options include heading to the Cine Colci, Cine Roma, and the Kinepolisto cinemas to check out some of the latest English language movies doing the rounds. But of course, there’s so much to see and do that you’ll rarely get chance to relax with a good movie. So that whether it’s checking out some of the uniquely Spanish festivals like one of the Moors and Christians fiesta, or just staying at home to practice your online blackjack skills, you’ll find no shortage of entertainment in Costa Blanca and Costa Calida this winter.

LCG Information on the Costa Blanca COSTA BLANCA

There is over 100 kilometers of sandy beach from Valencia in the north to Murcia in the south, best known for the Blue Flags they have been given. The Blue Flag Awards are presented by the European Federation of Environmental Education (EFEE) every year, in recognition of the excellent quality of water and amenities.

COSTA BLANCA MARKETS

I

t´s got to be arguably the most famous coast in Spain, Costa Blanca draws millions of tourists each year. Lying on the eastern coast, the White Coast is one of those resorts where everyone can find their place under the sun, from sophisticated towns where life goes on 25 hours a day to quaint little villages where the peace and tranquility is feature. Its clear blue waters and miles of white sandy beaches are certainly a major attraction. Beautiful mountains parallel to the sea are on the north coast. Here you can marvel at the Moorish villages where olive trees and hidden coves abound. To the south is where you will find the beaches mushrooming with palm trees, the sparkling, turquoise sea and rows of cafes and restaurants. Within the mountainous interior are a series of fascinating medieval towns and fortified villages which have been largely unaffected by modernism and tourism. Inland from the beaches, Costa Blanca has one of Spain’s most fertile areas. The region is renowned for its citrus trees supplied all over the world. Almond trees and date palms abounding with blossoms also blanket the earth. Every part of Costa Blanca is indeed a treasure to discover, a place to relax and enjoy. You can bask in the sun, hide away at some secret cove, or meet new friends and party like there s no tomorrow. Whatever you fancy, Costa Blanca is sure to please. Alicante is the capital and major city of Costa Blanca , but it is Benidorm that attracts the most visitors. Benidorm is an expansive holiday playground and tourist spot in every sense of the word. The place offers every amenity a tourist could want. With a safe, kindred atmosphere, safe waters and a host of activities to do, Benidorm is ideal for family vacations. It also has a lively nightlife, with hundreds of bars and clubs catering mainly for British tourists. There are good quality, cheap bus services within the main resorts and to towns in close proximity. Taxi cabs are also good value, especially for those traveling as a group. There are also some affordable, local car rental companies, best with those wishing to explore off the beaten paths. The Costa Blanca , with its striking mix of sandy beaches and top-of-the-line resorts, has somehow managed to fuse the sophistication of city life and the simplicity of nature into one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.

LCG Golfing Gadgets

W

ith each new season, golfers look forward not just to warm weather and lower scores, but to the myriad of golf gadgets and toys intended to make the game easier, more fun, and sometimes even a bit more casual. Golf is nothing if not equipment intensive and most golfers are never shy about adding to the mix. Gloves, balls, clubs, tees, the basics, those are a given, but all of the other toys, gadgets, and maybe even gimmicks will always grab the attention of even the most staid golf traditionalists, if only for a moment. The quirky little swing-trainers, the “magic” tip, the weighted club, all of the rain gear that stays in your bag because you don’t like to golf in the rain, golfers love it all, even if they don’t always want to admit it.

W

hen it comes to GPS golf watches, you can more or less rely on one particular name that can just about deliver all the time, and that would be Garmin. In the past, the company has rolled out its fair number of GPS golf watches, and this time around it looks like the Garmin Approach S20 GPS golf watch is set to further cement the legendary performance of Garmin’s products in this niche market yet again.

L

eading off our list was a pipe dream back in the day, but with modern technology, it is now a reality. Finally, a golf ball you are supposed to never lose. Inside each ball is a microchip for tracking purposes. Each set comes with a handheld tracking device, a dozen balls and protective casing.

Interviews

Simon Foster 1: Q: what does the Costa Blanca offer golf enthusiasts? A: The Cost Blanca offers one of the best all year round climates in the whole of Europe, and has the lowest rainfalls in the whole of Spain.

S

imon is a PGA professional who has resided on the Costa Blanca, Spain for over twelve years and he has an unrivaled knowledge and network of both golf and lifestyle. From Castellón in the North down to Murcia in the South of the East Coast, Simon has travelled and played on all the courses in the area and he couldn´t be any more experienced to discuss the golfing industry and how it´s attraction to overseas tourists has grown and strengthened many towns and communities in this area of Spain. In his years here in Spain , Simon has had a key involvement in the opening of three golf courses; two very well know courses in the Alicante province, La Finca and Vistabella, and a nine-hole course in Murcia. Simon has always given a lot of his time and dedication to Junior golf with the construction of a private academy facility at Vistabella which was key to the success of a junior academy nurturing local talent of all nationalities with lessons imparted in both English and Spanish. Simon was also the founder of an events company that specializes in Spanish golfing trips, sport and fitness, hospitality and entertainment along with lifestyle advise and consulting for those of you looking to make a more permanent move to the Costas! 2: Q: When are the best times to play golf on the Costa Blanca? A: For me the months September through to Christmas offer sensacional golfing weather in comparison to the rest of Europe. Also the spring time is idyllic to sharpen up your game, however you need to be a very hardened soul to play in the heat of July and August. 3: Q: As a professional golfer how do you entertain your clients? A: Depending on their needs and requirements, I can find accommodation for them, organize all their logistics from golf course green fees to airport transfers, and manage all required off course entertainment. I also offer coaching, clinics, and course playing possibilities to all my clients. 4: Q: what off course entertainment to you offer? A: My fifteen years knowledge and my love for the gastronome in Spain, has enabled me to build up a network of ideal places of interest: restaurants, bars, wineries, nightclubs and more. 5: Q: Tell me one thing you see in all amateurs that they could Improve? A: There are a few areas that jump to mind for a professional. However, I personally think that all amateur golfers could have a better pre round warm up routine enabling them to hit their first T shot in a more positive mind set. 53
