nly from the sea is it possible to truly appreciate the true wonder of the Serra Gelada terrestrial marine Natural Reserve located between Benidorm, l'Alfàs del Pi and Altea. Oxytours and Rumboaltea Charter come together to offer you this unique opportunity to experience a guided sailboat pirate tour. Having embarked in Altea we sail to the feet of its incredible cliffs where we will come across the Serra Gelada flora and fauna, the highest fossil dune in Europe, the greatest presence of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Valencia region and know the existence of an impressive marine plant named Posidonia oceanica. Throughout this amazing sailboat route you will discover the chilling history of Piracy on our Mediterranean coast. In particular the Berber pirate attacks which devastated coastal resident life for over 300 years dating back to the 16th century. We will sail along the cliffs and coves of Serra Gelada nature reserve which gave shelter to these thieves, rapists and Kidnappers based in Benidorm, Altea and the rest of Alicante coastline. We also have the chance to get to know Altea and Benidorm marine birdlife where depending on the time of year it is posible to see various protected species such as Balearic searwather (Puffinus mauretanicus) and Mediterranean searwather (Calonectris diomedea), European storm-petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), Audouin’s Gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii), Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) or Northern gannet (Morus bassanus). We offer you the unique opportunity to board a great sailboat to discover the secrets of the cliffs and enjoy swimming in these fabulous surroundings. This fantastic experience cannot be achieved any other way. What’s more we can provide transport to and from your accommodation if required and lunch in a traditional restaurant at an additional charge. Without doubt, the best way to discover the Costa Blanca. 4

LCG What to do

The Serra Gelada Natural Park in Valencian or Sierra Helada Natural Park in Spanish, is one of the most visited parks in the Valencian Community, formed by a mountain range of about six kilometers long that runs along the coast that is situated between Benidorm, Albir and Altea. The Sierra has large cliffs 400 meters high that plunge abruptly into the sea resulting in one of the most unique, powerful and extraordinary landscapes of the Costa Levantina. The "Secret"

olfers all over the Costa Blanca, and the world are all looking for the “secret” move that will improve their scores and give them the swing that they have always dreamed of, but this dream movement, unfortunately does not exist. Instead, golfers need to look within themselves to find the reasons behind their short-comings, this is not meant to sound derogatory or rude. Instead it is the honesty that golfers need to be able to truly improve their games. I have given a lot of lessons and a recurrent theme that I see is the mis-interpretation of the faults that plague a golfer, sometimes momentarily or sometimes for what may seem an entire lifetime strolling the fairways. These flaws may have a technical base, but the constant self-reminding when the flaw in question rears its ugly head, results in a golfer allowing mental interference to overcome them, cloud their judgement if you wish. It is this lack of clarity that is causing more of a problem than the actual issue with your technique Let me explain, you can have the perfect technique, but if your mind is thinking about the meeting that you may not make because of slow play or the need to get up and down from the green side bunker to win the club championship, you will still fail to hit the shot that you are attempting, regardless of your technique. This is the power of the mind, it is the reason why we all try to stay in the present, focus on what we are doing NOW, not what may happen or what has happened. Watching golf on TV you will often hear the pundits dissecting the swings of the world´s best golfers, pointing out the reason for a mis-hit or mistake, but ultimately this is only for TV. The main reason for a single mis-hit is the mental approach taken by the player. It is almost inconceivable to many that the mind can be solely to blame, but you also hear that a player “choked” coming down the stretch, losing the tournament because they couldn’t cope with the pressure of the situation. Pressure does not affect how we swing the club, it changes the way we think about swinging the club, ultimately taking control of the moment. A prime example of this is what I call the “provisional ball syndrome”. 6

How many times have you hit a poor shot, requiring you to play a provisional ball, only to hit your best shot of the day with your provisional ball? Regularly? This is not a surprise as the provisional ball is your potential, it is the way your body wants to swing the golf club, you are not clouding the issue with your mind, that is too occupied with thinking about the previous bad shot you hit. Reaching your potential does not necessarily require a text book swing, which to my mind is nothing more than a marketing ploy, it requires you to trust yourself, your natural ability to achieve the results that you want. When we step back and allow our bodies to function naturally, on their own invariably we perform better. This could be referred to as being in “the zone”, a state of mind where we are almost unable to explain what we did, how it felt or what we were thinking. It just happened. If you can achieve this state of mind more regularly then your scores will tumble.

Slow Play By Tony Myles Get a move on!!!

There is one topic on which the vast majority of golfers are in agreement and on which vast tomes have already been written.

Slow play.

It can be detrimental to the game on a number of levels. Individually you can be enjoying a good round and making straight and long drives, precise chips onto the green and deadly accurate putts. Then you come up behind a group who appear to be intent on taking as many shots as they need in order to reach the green, only to take a further three or four putts before deciding to move on. Your concentration lapses as you become irritated by their apparent lack of consideration. Your long straight drives become hooks and your chips become shanks. Irritation turns to rage as you three putt and your blood pressure mounts. You are ready to explode if you get close enough to that tardy group ahead.

So who is to blame?

If you ask any golfer if they have been guilty of slow play would anyone own up? I suspect not, as it is invariably someone else who is the culprit.

Some years ago I played with a small group of friends that included one chap who would wait patiently for players behind him to play before going into his setup routine for each shot. This included club selection, practice swing, feet positioning check, second practice swing, recheck alignment and eventually the shot. I pointed out that this process took more than 30 seconds on every shot and whilst that doesn't sound like a long time it means an extra 45 minutes on each round. A simple solution. “Be ready to play when it is your turn.” Realisation dawned and the 30 seconds was instantly reduced to a much more acceptable 10 seconds and 30 minutes was wiped off his round. Unless you are a professional competing for large sums, Golf is essentially a sociable game and much of the pleasure is obtained in the interaction with your fellow players. But this vital component should be measured against the needs of the other golfers. Not only those in your group but also the group behind and the ones behind them. A little bit of efficiency built into your game has the potential to yield significant improvements and act as a signal to your colleagues. So is Ready Golf the “cure-all” for slow Play or what else do we need to incorporate? More next week. Your suggestions and observations are always appreciated – email to tony@bayradio.fm

Villamartin Golf L

ocated in the urbanisation of the same name, Villamartin Golf course is one of the oldest in the Costa Blanca. Designed and built by Robert Putman, Villamartin Golf was opened in 1972 to high praise and was the first course in the Grupo Quara´s trio of courses. The original clubhouse was revamped a few years ago and now boasts a wonderful restaurant and bar area with a huge terrace overlooking the 18th green. Open to the public, the restaurant and bar can cater for any event with superb service and a high quality of food. A well-stocked pro-shop offers all essentials and the caddy masters are always smiling, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Villamartin has gained European Tour Recognition having hosted the 1994 Mediterranean Open, which was won by Jose Maria Olazabal. This pedigree speaks for itself, but Villamartin suffered a little, with many golfers considering the golf course tired and overplayed, but with the new clubhouse and a drive to maintain the clubs standing, the owners invested money into the course. Having played there a few weeks ago, I can honestly say that the course is in superb condition. The fairways are lush, framed by mature trees, offering shade from the sun and creating a wonderful shape to the holes. Having undergone refurbishment the bunkers are improving, although as with many courses in the area, a bit more sand could be added. Superb greens that roll true and quick are a delight to putt on, with variation in both design, difficulty and subtle breaks keeping the golfer on their toes throughout the round. Villamartin uses a two-tee start, with groups beginning from both the 1st and 10th tees. The first is a great par 5. From the tee you are

faced with a widening fairway, although anything right will find the hollow, a bunker left, and a row of bushes create havoc for those that have played left. As the hole sweeps downhill towards the green, protected by two bunkers, golfers must avoid the plethora of olive trees in the middle of the fairway. Across the road, the second is a perfect example of the individuality of each green. A reverse piano awaits, requiring the perfect club selection if you are to leave a straightforward putt. Elevation changes are regular, which adds character to the course, and although they create various blind holes, it adds another dimension to the intricacy of the design. The short par 4, seventh hole doglegs almost 90º to the right, down the hill to a green encircled by olive trees, longer hitters can attempt to get home in one from the tee. Delightful in its challenge is the 14th. A par five that requires a good drive to find the fairway, left of the bunker is the ideal line, although a natural storm drain “barranca” runs down the left before cutting across the fairway. It is this barranca and the mature pine trees which split the hole in two. Your third to the elevated green must avoid the trees, barranca and enormous bunker to the right. Without doubt the most memorable hole on the course is the picturesque, yet devilish par 3 17th. From the elevated tee you have a perfect view of the ravine that you must cross to reach the multi-tiered green that has 3-putt written all over it, especially if you hit the wrong tier. A severe slope runs through the centre creating two distinctive platforms with an additional platform back right. Walk way with a par and you will be singing and dancing all the way to the 18th tee! The closing hole for some, is another fairway littered with olive trees. A wonderful finish to one of my favourite golf courses in the region.

A taste of the...

editerranean

I

The Mediterranean Diet

f you're looking for a heart-healthy eating plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you. The Mediterranean diet incorporates the basics of healthy eating — plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps a glass of red wine — among other components characterizing the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Most healthy diets include fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, and limit unhealthy fats. While these parts of a healthy diet are triedand-true, subtle variations or differences in proportions of certain foods may make a difference in your risk of heart disease. BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. The diet has been associated with a lower level of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the "bad" cholesterol that's more likely to build up deposits in your arteries. In fact, a meta-analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality as well as overall mortality. 18

The Mediterranean diet is also associated with a reduced incidence of cancer, and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extravirgin olive oil and mixed nuts may have a reduced risk of breast cancer. For these reasons, most if not all major scientific organizations encourage healthy adults to adapt a style of eating like that of the Mediterranean diet for prevention of major chronic diseases. THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET EMPHASIZES: Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts •Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil. •Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods. •Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month. •Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week. •Enjoying meals with family and friends. •Drinking red wine in moderation (optional). •Getting plenty of exercise. •Fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains.

Alvaro

Quiros Garcia I

, Alvaro Quiros Garcia, was born on January 21st 1983 in a small town in the Cádiz province, Spain. My humble father was a gardener and a golfer. By the age of nine I had taken my first steps into a sport that would eventually become my livelihood and passion. It all started on La Cañada Golf Club.

THE BEGINNING From the age of 14 I played golf alongside my other great sporting passion, football. I was a decent football player and, at least they say that, I showed great skills and attitude as a cadet in my hometown team. But eventually I had to choose between the two sports. With some good advice from my father, I left football. I did this in order to have time for all the practice and travel that is required of one who aims to become a great golfer. To the age of 16, I continued to learn and practice my game at La Cañada Golf Club. I was coached and supervised by the local teaching staff, in particular Pedro Tineo, a great golfer and a superb teacher with a passion for teaching and inspiring young talents. He started to work with me in a serious and methodical way, inside his house with no ball, simply watching my swing path. My practice didn’t stop at the golf course. After school, I used to go to Pedro’s house to practice on his terrace. I also spent many late nights on an improvised training course, dressed in warm clothes to keep the winter out. There I worked over and over again on my swing under the glare of the spotlights, and Pedro of course. I trained every day, for many hours, swinging and swinging while working on my technique. It was hard work and maybe a bit too much for a 15-year-old boy. It is often at moments like this that people throw in the towel because they feel that the sacrifices you have to make in order to become an elite athlete are more than they can handle. But my own determination together with my father’s constant support paid off. In 1999, when I was 16 years old, I competed for Spain for the first time. 26

FROM TEEN TO GOLFER When I was 18 years old I had a handicap of +1 and managed to win a scholarship to enter the Residential High Performance Centre Joaquin Blume in Madrid. I shared facilities with athletes who are now successful Olympians: Andrès Diaz, Juan Carlos Higuero, Aitami Ruano, the triathlete Ivan Rana and the hockey player Bemardino Herrera, amongst others. It was during this period I joined the national under-21-team, to play alongside names such as Gonzalo Fernandez Castano, Alfredo Garcia Heredia, Pablo Martin and Alejandro Canizares. Playing in the Spanish team colours, we won the European Amateur Team Championship title. After that I managed to finish 4th place twice in the individual European Amateur Individual Championship and win the prestigious Biarritz cup with 60 strokes. I also appeared twice at the British Amateur. At this point in life Jose Rivero, the advisor to the Spanish team, took me under his wings. From that day on he has advised and assisted me in my play and how to improve my swing. TURNING PROFESSIONAL When turning 21 I had a handicap of +3.4 and I finally turned professional. I started to play the Spanish circuit, which was the Peugeot Tour. Advised by Rivero, I soon got my first victory at the Golf Club Sevilla in March 2005. In May 2006, while playing the Spanish circuit, I received an invitation to play a Challenge Tour event at the Morson International Challenge in Manchester, which I won. Getting this first victory gave me the rights to play the full Challenge Tour during the remainder of the year. I finished on18th place in 2006, which earned me my European Tour card for 2007. Even though I had earned my card, the category I had obtained gave me limited access to the second level of the Tour. As a result, I went to the qualifying school at San Roque Club where I improved my card category. Now I could start playing golf for real.

Raimon Waernes Tysterman (Raymond)

R

The La Sella Caddy Master – the man with superpowers! By Tony Myles

aymond was born in Trondheim and then at the age of two his parents moved to Amsterdam. Fortunately for several thousand golfers in the Costa Blanca his love and expertise at football brought him to Spain. He played professionally for many years and today, 28 years later, he still plays each weekend for the very successful Kamarka Denia Veterans. However, it was in those early formative days of golf on the Costa Blanca that he was persuaded by the owner of La Sella to take on the role of Caddy Master and it is his control of the La Sella Golf courses that makes him such a legend. He started when the course was nine holes and managed from a shed. In those days the task was so much easier, but there were promises of bigger things to come and so today there are 27 holes divided into three separate nine holes. On peak days Raymond has to administer the logistics for close to 400 players and the difficulty involved in this can be increased when one of the three courses is closed for maintenance. Add into that conundrum the fact that every day there will always be a number of players who are either lacking in experience or have no regard for the etiquette of the game, which dictates that you maintain a steady pace in order to avoid delaying the players following you.

Schedule in Memory

His day starts at 07.30 when he arrives at the course and surveys the bookings for the day ahead. He says that he commits most of this to memory and then decides on which groups should start on which tees. This of course means that he needs to be aware of what time each group will be returning to the club house in order to start their “back nine” on the next course. So the crossover has to be timed and this is where slow players can cause a problem for many others. 28

However as regular golfers at La Sella will attest it works like a well-oiled machine. There are two attributes which set Raymond apart. Firstly his ability with languages. He will converse happily in fluent English and then flow easily into Spanish or German or Dutch or French. He doesn't feel the cold! The second attribute is his apparel. From January through to December he wears exactly what you see in this picture. Irrespective of the temperature. And although we enjoy pleasant weather throughout the year there are days when the thermometer indicates a very chilly single figure number and there have been occasions when ice has been seen at the lower levels of the course. This has no impact on Raymond who never wears long sleeves except when, at his wife's insistence, he is required to appear smarter. On one of the most popular courses in Spain he is an invaluable asset and much appreciated by both members and visitors alike.

Keep your head down! For many golfers this is the one fault that can creep into your game and insidiously corrupt every component

T

By Tony Myles

he reason for this is that for most of us there is an anxiety attached to each and every golf shot. Hence the temptation to watch it as soon as it leaves the club. This can lead to 'anticipation' and that means moving the head in advance of the shot. We all know that even the slightest movement can result in the shoulders lifting and your finely tuned golf swing, which is shaped in order to deliver the club head in precisely the correct position behind the ball, moves a fraction of an inch and takes the ball closer to its equator.

Disaster!

Worse is the fact that many of us know exactly why this happens, but therein lies the further problem as the cure demands that we fix our gaze firmly behind the ball. This produces a tightness in the swing and unpredictable results.

So how do you fix it? If you have the time and dedication to visit the driving range for several hours each day then regular practices will surely fix it – along with other issues.

For the rest of us is there a quick fix? Short of attaching some cheese wire from your forehead to a delicate part of your anatomy what can you do? If you have a solution that worked for you then please share it. I will incorporate the best ones in the coming weeks. Email tony@bayradio.fm

The White Coast Golf Society

I

t is appropriate that a Society founded on the Costa Blanca should be named the White Coast Society. And equally appropriate is the fact that unlike many other societies The White Coast do not confine themselves to one home golf club, preferring instead to travel north and south along the white coast visiting clubs from El Saler to Font de Lop. The society is quite young by many standards having been formed in 2004. Gary Stone and Dave Peacock were the founder members and their objective was to create a group of golfers who wanted to play the game seriously, but would nevertheless place a high value on the companionship that it provided. Today the society has a full complement of sixty members but nevertheless they would consider membership applications where the applicant has been recommended by an existing member and especially from lady golfers or anyone with a low handicap. The existing range of handicaps is very impressive with players as low as plus 2 and up to 36. Gary Stone remains an active member and indeed is the Society Captain this year. He has a constancy which many golfers would envy having played off under 5 for fifty years. 30

By Tony Myles

How do you choose which courses to use? I asked Gary for his views on what makes a good society venue. “The welcome at each course is paramount to enjoying the day. Many members prefer to use buggies and these are always reserved in advance. It is reassuring to find that they are set aside and labelled when we arrive. Attention to detail is always important and the fact that some of our members are presented with a vegetarian option on any meals can also help create a positive feeling about the Club. It also doesn't cost much to offer the players a snack at the end of game or some free tapas? This can benefit the club as the tendency is ti have a second beer. Finally we are all experienced players and appreciate an efficiently run course where the delays are minimised. This can be assured by a “friendly” but “firm” Marshall who monitors slow play and takes action to eliminate this curse!.” The White Coast Golf Society have a comprehensive web site and you can find out more about them by visiting www.whitecoastgolf.com

o live surrounded by palm trees is not, in Elche, an impossible dream. From the day of their birth in the hospital to their final farewell in the monumental Old Cemetery, full of flowers, the Ilicitanos (people of Elche) work, study, practice sport, dream, sleep, fall in love, stroll, have fun, enjoy art, in short, live life to the full, surrounded by the swaying branches of palm trees. The city may not be understood, nor its citizens understand themselves, without taking into consideration the historic Palm Grove, which has provided a unique urban landscape for more than a thousand years, and which was declared a World Heritage site in the year 2000. More than 200,000 palm trees With more than 200,000 palm trees, 50,000 of them in the town´s nurseries ready to be transplanted, the Palm Grove of Elche is the largest in Europe. Although, when viewed from a distance, it may appear to be a great forest, it is, in reality, a plantation with an agriculture purpose. Hence the plots of palm trees or their groupings are called “huertos” or orchards. Each of the plots is flanked by rows of palm trees, in such a way that, as seen from the air, they form a grid pattern. The terraces created within the plots have traditionally been dedicated to agricultural production. Although the existence of palm trees throughout the south of Europe since before the presence of mankind has been proven, the decline in temperatures and the Ice Ages put an end to the majority of them, with the exception of some warmer areas which were protected from the cold, such as Elche. The profusion of drawings of palms and palm trees on the Iberian ceramics of La Alcudia (third to first century B.C.) demonstrates the existing importance of date palms at that time.

vests of dates for the local market. They have also begun to produce varieties of palm tree for sale which have been developed in laboratories. EL PALMERAL MUSEUM Have an awareness of the history, evolution, culture and characteristics of Elche’s historic Palm Grove will enable us to enjoy and appreciate it to a greater extent. To this end and with the advent of UNESCO’s World Heritage Listing in 2000, the City Hall created the facility known as Palm Grove Museum and Interpretation Centre. A traditional 19th century house was chosen as the ideal setting for this museum and educational facility. The house has two wings connected by a covered wooden bridge and is located in the heart of the city at the grove known as Huerto de San Plácido, quite close to Huerto del Cura and on the Palm Grove Walk. Not surprisingly it is surrounded by palm trees and their history, uses and evolution are divulged in the various exhibition rooms inside by way of videos, panels, displays, tactile screens and ambience sound. A STROLL IN THE GROVE The museum experience is complemented by a walk outside in the grove where a specialised palm worker or “palmerero” (Mornings from Tuesday to Friday; booking required) will show his or her white palm plaiting skills in the workshop annex of the museum; here, new craftsmen and women are trained in this traditional cottage industry. The craft courses last for seven months but the higher qualification in this trade is only awarded after three years of supervised training.

Bonfires of San Juan (Alicante)

A

La Finca Algorfa Golf

From Jun 20, 2018 to Jun 24, 2018

licante celebrates the coming of summer with the bonfires of San Juan. In a spectacular display of music, colour and fireworks, thousands of people throng the streets to experience this fiesta which pays tribute to fire. To celebrate the arrival of summer, the people of Alicante would traditionally flock to the countryside on 23 June for a festive dinner: they feasted on typical products, and at midnight they would light bonfires and dance around them, set off fireworks and go swimming in the sea. This custom endured over the years, and in 1928 the fiestas of the Bonfires of San Juan were formally constituted. For several days, Alicante celebrates this great homage to fire, where the stars of the show are genuine works of ephemeral art: the bonfires and the enormous cardboard and wooden figures which go up in flames on the night of San Juan. The queen of the fiesta, known as the "Bellea del Foc" ("Beauty of Fire"), is chosen in May from among the candidates presented by a committee in each neighbourhood. The festivities officially begin on 20 June with the "plantà", or building of enormous bonfires with their tonguein-cheek cardboard figures which fill the streets of Alicante with wit and good humour. That day the "barracas" or large tents are also put up to serve as a public dance floor, and where fiestagoers can sample the typical figs and "cocas" (a kind of pastry with tuna, onions and pine nuts). Some of the highlights of the festivities include the Entry of the Bands and Committees, with their respective "beauties" and their ladies-in-waiting wearing traditional dress; the floral offering to the patron saint of the city, the Virgin of El Remedio on 21 and 22 June; and the international folklore parade, a spectacular procession featuring dance troupes from all over the world. In addition, every day at two in the afternoon from 19 to 24 June, there are firework displays in Plaza de los Luceros square: these are the ear-splitting "mascletàs", for which

A

licante has been famous for its tourism for decades. Alicante’s sunshine, beaches, mild climate prompted Wenceslao Fernández Flores to call it “the home of Spring”. Then there’s the delicious food, the palm trees and the exotic fruits that give it a touch of sensual beauty.

etc. In the same area of Elda and Petrer, you can also explore the curious Footwear Museum or eat alongside creative specialists in La Sirena or in Pastelería Totel (Paco Torreblanca); you might even fancy a trip to the various brand outlets to shop for designer footwear. Wines, fashion, gastronomy. It’s an interesting mix, isn’t it?

ENOTURISMO. RUTAS DEL VINO DE ALICANTE But besides that image of blue domes, mountains stretching down to the sea, palms and band music, there’s another Alicante, a rich and diverse side only a few kilometres away from the coast and within easy reach, where vineyards, olive groves, fig trees and unspoilt countryside create the Wines of Alicante landscape. These are very individual wines, with terroir, which speak of their arid, dry climate, of castles on mountain tops, of restrained literature, gastronomy halfway between the Mediterranean and Castile, sober people and Mediterranean history. Nowadays you can visit wineries and destinations in the Alicante interior by following some of the routes and options we suggest here:

Monóvar has always been one of Spain’s historic wine centres. This is home to Monastrell and Fondillón. One of the wineries, Primitivo Quiles, is steeped in winemaking history. You’ll find it in the centre to town, right next to the pretty bullring. This family winery makes a range of wines and they have the first Fondillón to get points on the Parker Rating System.

ROUTE THROUGH LA MARINA ALTA The La Marina Alta route takes in the area of Benissa, Teulada, Xaló and Parcent, plus the famous Valle del Pop, the closest to the Mediterranean Sea. You can stop at several wineries that welcome visitors enthusiastically. For example, Bodegas Xaló and the small family wineries of Bodegas Parcent. You can have lunch and if you go on a Saturday you can explore the Xaló street market. A little way further on, in Alfaz del Pí and very close to Benidorm, you’ll find the Enrique Mendoza winery, which runs tours and wine tastings in a beautiful estate. ROUTES THROUGH THE VINALOPÓ MEDIO Route 1: From Monóvar to Pinoso you travel through there is a broad valley full of vineyards and with one of the area’s most distinctive landscapes. Starting from Petrer, you can visit Bodegas Bocopa, a large business group comprising most local producers and offering wine tourism with guided tours, tastings, 40

i r e n i W to t i s i V a c i l A

In Monóvar you have to take short walk to get to the Azorín House-Museum, the church and the casino in this charming and traditional town. On your way to Pinoso you’ll find large and small wineries, including El Mañán, Bodegas Alejandro and Brotons. They all offer wines in the style of small wineries plus authentic traditional shops. You can smell wine everywhere you go. Very soon you arrive in Pinoso (unless you stopped to have lunch in one of the little villages on the way, such as Enzebras, Casas del Señor or Úbeda, where they make the area’s best rice dishes and stews, many of which are cooked over fires fuelled by vine shoots). Pinoso is a small but attractive town with several wineries. You may want to visit La Bodega de Pinoso, with its large, early 20th century brick building. Or perhaps Volver, Vivanza or the modern facilities at El Sequé. People traditionally go to Pinoso for the wine and to eat. Gazpachos, “Perusas” (homemade sweets), traditional sausages and lots of other delicious treats from this part of the Mediterranean. From Pinoso you can link up with the Jumilla Wine Route through Las Cañadas, one of the most arid, mysterious and secluded places in the area. ENOTURISMO. RUTAS DEL VINO DE ALICANTE Route 2: Most of the wineries in this northern area can be found in Villena. Before coming here you could visit

ies t ine t n a Sax, whose castle seems to defy the laws of gravity and beneath which lie the vineyards owned by the Bodega Cooperativa. If you go to Salinas you can visit the charming winery of Finca Collado, set in a tranquil spot and surrounded by vines, where they will take special care of you. In Villena you can visit large estates like Chaconero de Mendoza or look round small wineries like Vinessens. On the road to Pinoso you might want to stop awhile to gaze at the peaceful valley of Salinas and explore the spectacular Bodegas Francisco Gómez, or continue a bit further to Bodegas Sierra Salinas, which offers tastings of its popular red wines. In the town are two other wineries, Bernabé Navarro and Bodega Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes, where you can buy top quality wine and oil. Villena is an ideal town for exploring on foot, with a historic centre, churches, museums and the famous Treasure. If you drop into the Tourist Office they can recommend the best places both in town and in the surrounding area. Make sure you don’t miss the magnificent castle of Biar, the road through the Benexama Valley (Bodegas Bernabé Navarro is on this road) packed with vines, olive groves and fruit trees, towards the impressive castle of Banyeres de Mariola. OTHER TOURS / AREAS From Alicante to Vinalopó on the A31 road to Madrid is Novelda, where you’ll find Heretat de Cesilia, a relatively new winery that offers wine tourism in an area where vineyards are being recovered for wine production alongside the traditional “Uva Embolsada” (bagged table grapes). A visit to this town could be rounded off with a tour of the castle of La Mola, La Magdalena church and the Modernist museum. Alternatively, you could take a trip to Alicante’s most mountainous region, with a different climate and spectacular countryside, and take a look at the winery of Vins del Comtat in Cocentaina. They run winery tours and trips round the mountain region that some refer to as “Alicante’s answer to Tuscany”, with castles, cherries, ancient olive trees and the Natural Parks of Sierra

de Mariola and Montcabrer. On your way you could stop off in Alcoy, one of the towns that has made the most of the rugged local countryside, a bustling place with lots of shops and charm, and where the sound of gunpowder and brass bands takes over the streets at certain times of year. Another interesting option is closer to Elche. In his fruitful field, and in the village of Matola, a small but unique winery has regained growing grapes with muscat grape varieties. Bodegas Faelo has modernized the famous ” Matola´s wine.” Feeling that area is always a pleasure because you will find the fields between palms and a rich variety of irrigated agriculture and high value products. Of course, if you coincide with the annual festivals in these towns you might see some of the best Moors and Christians parades in the entire province, or take part in a Romería (a rural pilgrimage) or let your ears ring with brass band music and gunpowder. Just like the joyful and effusive personality of our wines. The wines and landscapes in the Alicante DO will captivate you. ENOTURISMO. RUTAS DEL VINO DE ALICANTE THE ALICANTE PDO REGULATORY BOARD One of the buildings in the old part of the city of Alicante is proud to be the home of the Alicante PDO Regulatory Board, an institution stretching back over 80 years of the city’s historical milestones and reflecting the city’s social and economic growth. The Regulatory Board occupies modern facilities in Plaza Virgen del Remedio, just behind the new City Council building. The building houses a visitor reception centre where you can obtain information about all the wineries and wines across the province. It also has an auditorium, tasting room and a rooftop area with spectacular 360º views of the old part of the city, which stands beneath the imposing hill of Benacantil. This is a wonderful opportunity to make contact with the sector, with its history and its many activities.

COMMON FAULTS AND FIXES POOR POSTURE

The body angles you create are vitally important and the quality of your “static” position at address determines the quality of your body motion and your balance. The creation of good angles in the beginning allows you to maintain them throughout the swing. A sound posture is the prerequisite for good golf. Therefore, you must try to make the best possible posture you can, bearing in mind the different physical attributes you have.

FAULT

Most players create bad set up positions by either, bending too much in the knees or bending too much from the waist. Both positions create bad body angles which are impossible to maintain during the swing. The associated effects are things like changing height and poor body rotation, which manifest themselves as contact problems such as; air shots, tops, thins, fats, slices, hooks and shanks. All caused from a bad posture!

Body Tilt Drill

Good Posture

Poor Posture Knees

Poor Posture Spine

FIX

With this simple exercise you can easily create the correct body angles relevant to your physique. Whilst standing vertically with your feet shoulder width apart, place a club along your spine with the club head touching your head and the grip extending to your lower back. You now have two contact points; whilst maintaining these two points bend forward from the hips to create your spine angle and gently flex your knees. If the club comes away from the contact points then you have flexed too much the knees or bent too much from the waist. Whilst the feeling is very different at first, you will find that with practice you will achieve better body motion, better balance and control.

e all know how the areas around Costa Blanca and Costa Calida offer no shortage of fun as a result of the glorious climate and the beautiful beaches. But what can we do when the cooler months roll in? Thankfully the fun never stops in the south of Spain as there’s everything from chic gastro bars to decadent nightclubs and stylish casinos to help you get through the Spanish winter! We’ve already shown how the Browns gastrobar has quickly risen to become one of the stars in La Zenia’s nightlife scene. And whether it’s investigating the fine dining options at Aticcook or checking out the tapas at the Iberia Gastrobar in Javea, you’ll never run out of options for delicious food in the area. Those who fancy relaxing with a cocktail in some seriously stylish surroundings should head to Bela Dama in Moraira to try a romantic drink with some pretty views. And the Belroy Lounge in Benidorm always provides a great place to grab a low-key drink and enjoy the wide range of musical offerings that range from sultry jazz to some great Cuban and Latin sounds. Obviously it’s Benidorm that really excels in nightlife entertainment with the clubs on Avenida Communitat Valencia giving us all plenty of excuses to hit the dancefloor. And even if you tire of the beats, then the Casino Mediterraneo is located nearby and it can give you the chance to play the real-life versions of casino games like blackjack that you know from gaming websites like InterCasino. Other more relaxing nightlife options include heading to the Cine Colci, Cine Roma, and the Kinepolisto cinemas to check out some of the latest English language movies doing the rounds. But of course, there’s so much to see and do that you’ll rarely get chance to relax with a good movie. So that whether it’s checking out some of the uniquely Spanish festivals like one of the Moors and Christians fiesta, or just staying at home to practice your online blackjack skills, you’ll find no shortage of entertainment in Costa Blanca and Costa Calida this winter.

LCG Information on the Costa Blanca COSTA BLANCA

There is over 100 kilometers of sandy beach from Valencia in the north to Murcia in the south, best known for the Blue Flags they have been given. The Blue Flag Awards are presented by the European Federation of Environmental Education (EFEE) every year, in recognition of the excellent quality of water and amenities.

COSTA BLANCA MARKETS

I

t´s got to be arguably the most famous coast in Spain, Costa Blanca draws millions of tourists each year. Lying on the eastern coast, the White Coast is one of those resorts where everyone can find their place under the sun, from sophisticated towns where life goes on 25 hours a day to quaint little villages where the peace and tranquility is feature. Its clear blue waters and miles of white sandy beaches are certainly a major attraction. Beautiful mountains parallel to the sea are on the north coast. Here you can marvel at the Moorish villages where olive trees and hidden coves abound. To the south is where you will find the beaches mushrooming with palm trees, the sparkling, turquoise sea and rows of cafes and restaurants. Within the mountainous interior are a series of fascinating medieval towns and fortified villages which have been largely unaffected by modernism and tourism. Inland from the beaches, Costa Blanca has one of Spain’s most fertile areas. The region is renowned for its citrus trees supplied all over the world. Almond trees and date palms abounding with blossoms also blanket the earth. Every part of Costa Blanca is indeed a treasure to discover, a place to relax and enjoy. You can bask in the sun, hide away at some secret cove, or meet new friends and party like there s no tomorrow. Whatever you fancy, Costa Blanca is sure to please. Alicante is the capital and major city of Costa Blanca , but it is Benidorm that attracts the most visitors. Benidorm is an expansive holiday playground and tourist spot in every sense of the word. The place offers every amenity a tourist could want. With a safe, kindred atmosphere, safe waters and a host of activities to do, Benidorm is ideal for family vacations. It also has a lively nightlife, with hundreds of bars and clubs catering mainly for British tourists. There are good quality, cheap bus services within the main resorts and to towns in close proximity. Taxi cabs are also good value, especially for those traveling as a group. There are also some affordable, local car rental companies, best with those wishing to explore off the beaten paths. The Costa Blanca , with its striking mix of sandy beaches and top-of-the-line resorts, has somehow managed to fuse the sophistication of city life and the simplicity of nature into one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.

LCG Golfing Gadgets TAYLORMADE M1 DRIVER Adjust the TaylorMade M1 Driver for the perfect swing!

I

didn’t plan to incorporate golf clubs as part of this gadget list, but this particular TaylorMade M1 Driver from TaylorMade has some nifty adjustment features I think is worth looking at. It enables you to personalize the M1 to the exact specification which fit your swing perfectly. Two small movable weights on a track system that goes from Fade to Draw and High and Low will fine tune the trajectory of the ball.

ARCCOS GOLF PERFORMANCE TRACKING SYSTEM The most comprehensive Golf Tracking System with GPS, shot tracking and complete Tour Analytics in one package.

H

ere is another awesome golf tracking system that takes your game to a whole new level – the Arccos Golf Performance Tracking System. With fourteen sensors attached to each of your clubs, paired once with your smartphone, you are good to go. No hassle during play and everything is monitored automatically with Bluetooth and GPS technology after pairing. And you get a heap load of statistics and data from the sensors like shot detection, speed, club usage, distance, puts per hole to mention a few. The system is compatible with Apple Watch as well which gives you additional features.

SKLZ GOLD FLEX STRENGTH AND TEMPO TRAINER Golf training without the use of golf balls.

W

ant a great tool for increasing your strength, practicing tempo, and warm up before the next round? Take a good look at SKLZ Gold Flex Strength and Tempo Trainer. It feels like a real golf club, both in weight and handling, but you don’t hit any balls with it. Use it for swing plane training and general strengthening of core golf muscles in your garden or indoors. The flexible fiberglass shaft and the polyurethane head make it a durable and useful golf gadget you can swing whenever you want.

FOOTJOY STASOF MEN’S GOLF GLOVE Recommended Golf Glove.

A

good glove is a necessity when playing golf. I don’t know if you can call it a gadget, but here is my recommendation anyhow, for a good product at a decent price – the FootJoy StaSof Men’s Golf Glove.

THE VOICE FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

"Over the years, I've studied the habits of golfers. I know what to look for. Watch their eyes. Fear shows up when there is an enlargement of the pupils. Big pupils lead to big scores". Sam Snead

It was a sunny Saturday morning, a little before 8 a.m., I was on the first hole at The Oaks of St. George Golf Club and beginning my pre-shot routine, when a piercing voice came over the clubhouse loudspeaker:

"Although golf was originally restricted to wealthy, overweight Protestants, today it’s open to anybody who owns hideous clothing". Dave Barry

"Would the gentleman on the woman's tee back up to the men's tee please!"

"Don't play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty". Harry Vardon "I don't like to watch golf on television because I can't stand people who whisper". David Brenner

Golf is played by twenty million mature American men whose wives think they are out having fun. Jim Bishop

I could feel every eye on the course looking at me. I was still deep in my routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption. Again the announcement: "Would the man on the woman's tee kindly back up to the men's tee." I simply ignored the guy and kept concentrating, when once more, the voice yelled, "Would the man on the woman's tee back up to the men's tee. please?!?!" I finally stopped, turned around, cupped my hands and shouted back: "Would the jerk with the microphone please keep quiet and let me play my second shot!" 53
