LCG What to do

g n i r o l Exp ltea A

T

he beautiful blue-and-white tiled church dome peeking out among the glistening white houses in Altea’s old town has become an icon of the Costa Blanca. Sitting between the busy resort of Benidorm to the south and Calpe with its majestic Ifach rock to the north, Altea is a beautiful little resort to explore the 200 kilometres of the Costa Blanca coastline and its mountains. Although Altea is just 10 kilometres from Benidorm it is a world apart in terms of its beauty, culture and visitors. It’s much quieter for

4

a start and appeals to people seeking a tranquil holiday amid beautiful scenery. There are two main areas – along the beach and up in the old town. Altea old town looks typically Spanish with its pretty, narrow cobbled streets with white houses leading up to a beautiful central square. The whitewashed houses provide a clean canvas for the flowerbeds bursting with Mediterranean colours. It’s no surprise that Altea attracts artists and photographers who are drawn in by the town’s charm, fan-

tastic light and natural beauty. There is so much to inspire someone with a creative eye from the cobbled streets, magnificent sea and mountain views, historic buildings or simply a cat lazing in a flowerbed in the sunshine. It’s a steep climb up to the old town so we’d advise you to take your time to catch your breath and enjoy the views over the beach and the sea. It’s a charming place to wander through the little streets finding fabulous, family-run shops and restaurants while stumbling across

LCG What to do

some historic buildings which have made their mark in life in Altea. Along the way you will see remains of the ancient walls and gateways which protected the hilltop town from pirates. In the 16th century the upper part of the old town was built to protect it from attacks. A castle was built on what is now the Plaza de la Iglesia with the upper town being surrounded by a wall with three gates. Today, just two of these gates remain - Vell Portal and Portal Nou. Your tour could start at the Plaza del Convent just off the N332 main

road running along the length of the Costa Blanca. Here you will find the Iglesia de San Francisco, an old Franciscan convent. If you walk up from the Plaza del Convent, to the corner of the streets Calle Pont de Moncau and Calle La Sequia, you will find examples of two grand houses built for 19th century landowners - Casa Beneyto (casa de cultura) and the Pharmacy, which was the old chemist shop Farmacia Martinez. Opposite are the pretty Escaleras del “Mestre de la Música”. This is where the climb really begins but it’s so beautiful to wander along the lovely cobbled street lined with whitewashed houses and shops with steps taking you up to the main square. These steps are dedicated to the composer and musician Francisco Perez Devesa who directed many musical bands in Altea, Alfaz del Pi and Calpe. There are 255 wooden steps in the characteristic dark colours of Altea old town. Before climbing the steps, go a little further up the road to the Barrio de Bellaguarda district to see where the defensive walls were built in the 14th century to protect the coast from marauding pirates. A few more steps and you get to the Plaza de la Cruz which is another pictuesque little square. Off this plaza, turn up the Calle Costeros del Matxos road for the Portal Vell gateway, providing further evidence of the old walled city. Dream scenes for artists in Altea This is another dream for artists with the patterned cobbles and archways making a frame for the pretty buildings and squares. Now we go through these charming streets to the beautiful Plaza de la Iglesia with its church, the Virgen del Consuelo, taking pride of place. This is a lovely, traditional Mediterranean square and it’s well worth grabbing a coffee in one of the bars so you can relax and take in the atmosphere. It's a superb church at the highest point of Altea with its famous blue-and-white tiled dome. The church was built in the 19th century

in the style of a Latin cross with a stunning interior of classic gold and floral motifs. Look out for the ceramic shapes and dragons sculpted within the church. Although the church itself was built in the19th century with work being completed in 1910, there has been a place of worship here for more than 900 years. It also bears the battle scars of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s when one of the bell towers was destroyed by Franco's men. The Virgen del Consuelo church dominates over one of the most picturesque squares on the Costa Blanca. It's lined with bars, restaurants and shops so you can easily spend an afternoon here while enjoying the fabulous views over the Mediterranean and towards the hulking skyscrapers in Benidorm. Look towards the sea from the square and you can see further evidence of the ancient walls which used to protect Altea. It's certainly worth popping in to the church to see the beautiful stained glass windows, the expansive use of gold, and the sculptures. In and around the square, you will find little shops selling crafts, jewellery and paintings so you can pick up a unique souvenir of your time in Altea. There’s a lovely little art gallery in Calle Sant Josep and you can also check out cultural events in Altea at the Palau Altea with live music, theatre and exhibitions. The beach resort’s place as a haven for artists has been given a further boost with a Fine Arts department of the Miguel Hernandez University in Elche setting up in the town, so bringing even more talented artists to Altea. Don't forget the beaches in Altea While in Altea, also visit the lovely beaches and seafront promenade brimming with cafes, bars and restaurants for refreshments. You can get to Altea via the N332 coast road linking the Costa Blanca resorts which cuts through the middle of the town. The Denia to Benidorm train also stops at Altea station or you can get the tourist bus from Benidorm.

Seve Ballesteros: Spain's ultimate matador S

everiano Ballesteros Sota was born in the Cantabrian town of Pedreña, near Santander, in 1957. He has been the best player who has given Spanish golf and one of the greatest golf in the world. His uncle Ramón Sota was already one of the best golf players in Europe in the 60s. Severiano played his first championship at age 9, obtaining a result of 51 strokes in 9 holes, demonstrating a great natural talent for golf. He became a professional in 1974, at the age of 16 and throughout his career he won 93 victories around the world, including 3 British Open (1979, 1984 and 1988), 2 United States Masters (1980s and 1983), five Match-Play World Cups, 2 World Cups and 9 participations, with various victories, in the Ryder Cup. He was also ranked 1st in the European Order of Merit during the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1986, 1988 and 1991. His success contributed greatly to the development of golf in Europe, as he was a charismatic golf player who had a large number of followers. Severiano Ballesteros promoted the development of the Ryder Cup with his outstanding participations, achieving, in addition, that the Ryder Cup was celebrated for the first time outside the British Isles. In 1997, the Valderrama Golf Club, located in the province of Cádiz, hosted this important event. The European team won in the competition, which allowed him to retain the cup. Severiano had an outstanding participation as captain of the European team. He promoted the development and popularization of golf in Spain and also made golf known by organizing and promoting important professional tournaments such as the Open of Spain, the Seve Trophy, the Turespaña Masters and the Canary Open. Seve was also established in 1986 the company Amen Corner dedicated 6

to the organization of tournaments and the company Trayectory of design of golf courses. Throughout his life he received multiple awards and decorations. Unfortunately, Severiano Ballesteros died in 2011, due to illness, in his hometown of Pedreña. His 3 children Javier, Miguel and Carmen are responsible for maintaining their legacy through the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

Seve Ballesteros Quotes:

"It is very sad. I was treated with disrespect. It was hard to sleep, and I cried because the players' committee judged me without regard for the big picture and my contributions to the European tour." "The problem was the first three I didn't feel comfortable and was tense. That made the rest of the cult, but I played well on the

holes. a bit day diffiback nine."

"My intention is to compete until I'm 54. So if I join the Champions Tour, it will only be for four years - no more than that. I'm in the golf course design business. This is my future. I'd rather go to a place where there is nothing and design a golf course. This will be a good legacy for me to leave." "I'd like to see the fairways more narrow. Then everyone would have to play from the rough, not just me."

"He was amazing to work with though, a genius. I've never seen anyone with such skill, especially with wedges. He had shots no one else had. He had control over the ball like no-one else. The new balls killed off his edge though." "I look into their eyes, shake their hand, pat their back, and wish them luck, but I am thinking, 'I am going to bury you." "I am really very happy with the final score today. It has been a great two days of competition and the European Team played fantastic. The Asian team also showed a tremendous game. On this occasion we had a little more luck, but at the end of the day golf is the real champion." "Yeah, but I'll be working as a marshal. I'll be helping your team find all the balls they drive into the rough." 7

T

he Real Club de Golf Campoamor Resort is conveniently situated in a unique environment south of the noble city of Orihuela (Alicante), right in the heart of the Costa Blanca. A green area of 707 hectares which once belonged to Hacienda “Dehesa de Campoamor” where the Mediterranean landscape and traditional citrus groves gently blend. Its privileged location barely 3 km from the beach and over 130 metres above sea level favours the arrival of a gentle sea breeze and a beautiful view of the Mediterranean coast. The proximity of the Mediterranean has a considerable bearing on the excellent climate of the area with temperatures which average 20º C and more than 300 sunny days year-round. The Costa Blanca is a lively and vitalistic land of tradition which affords the visitors rich culture filled with fiestas and legends. It is close to important tourist attractions like the cities of Elche, Alicante, Benidorm, Murcia or Cartagena which provide the area with high-level services and unbeatable leisure and entertainment proposals. This golf course has been challenging experienced golfers since 1988 when it was inaugurated as Real Club de Golf Campoamor by HRH D. Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona, in whose honour a tournament which bears his name is held every year in August. The course emerged from the wild beauty of Dehesa de Campoamor between two interconnected valleys surrounded by small hillocks that protect it from the wind, which generates a microclimate that enables the practice of golf any time of year. With a 6,277 m round and par 72 the player enjoys a course whose laws, neatly-manicured to the highest standards of quality, are only enhanced by the lush vegetation and fauna of the area. The Social Club, with a surface area of 2,800 sq m at 130 m above sea level in the heart of the golf course, represents the core and symbol around which the whole complex takes shape. Renowned architect Mr Juan Ligués Creus managed to incorporate the essence of the surrounding Dehesa de Campoamor, thus designing an imposing space. Its unusually high and luxurious cherry-tree wood-panelled ceilings, the granite paving and large windows —which ensure stunning views of the sea and the golf course— as well as its imaginative and meticulous decoration, turn its large rooms into utterly sublime spaces. Right at the Social Club are the Administration Department, the sports goods shop and the golf reception desk where you will be able to take the necessary steps in order to enjoy the resort. 8

TOM McCowan

PGA España, author of the book "So y

o play a good golf shot you do not hit the ball - the clubhead hits the ball You Swing the clubhead.

Having recently received the new catalogue from a golf component supplier I was amused and surprised by the description of some of the golf club shafts, especially the one described as being designed for the more aggressive swings. Faster rhythm yes, but does aggression produce more clubhead speed? The words; Balance, Control, Stability, consistency, swing speeds being slower or faster, enhancing playability, makes for an easier swing, produces comfort better feel, more stable swing, extending flight distance, vibration dampening, etc. are generally used, but when it comes to being designed for aggressive swings, you must wonder what the next description is going to be. Will it continue to drift away from the concept of a rhythmical golf swing, for the preference of just hit the ball harder and harder. Care must be taken over the words that are used to describe what someone has been doing and what others think that they have seemed to have done whilst playing golf. Most good golfers will tell you that they hit the ball well today when what they did was hit good golf shots. They go to the range and practise their swing, to better their golf shots. One of the best golfers of their time stated that, before a tournament he went to the practice ground to “prepare for play”, then go to the golf course and “play”. When the game was over go again to the practice area to “un-play” the game, to get back into the condition to start all over again the next day. The definition of the word swing according to the “Collins Concise English Dictionary”, to swing is to move backwards and forwards, as a freely hanging object, to turn as on a hinge or swivel, to have exciting rhythmic quality. To move a bat or weapon etc. with a sweeping motion and various other similar examples of continuous movements. The movement of the golf club shaft is to produce dynamic energy down the its length by flexing backwards to forwards accelerating the clubhead as it passes forwards through the position of the ball. Will aggression towards the ball make for better golf shots ? This following video is an example of a good golf shot being played;

THE MAR MENOR, THE “SEA OF HEALTH”

W

hen you think of living in Murcia, you likely think of the warm climate, calm waters and lots of time spent outdoors. If you’re a local, you might also know Murcia as the destination for mud – that is, the therapeutic, nutrient-rich mud baths in the Mar Menor. It sounds like a messy pastime, but mud bathing has taken place here for centuries. In fact, did you know the Mar Menor is called the “sea of health” for its warm waters and healing muds? Plenty of bathers have come to the edges of the lagoon seeking the medical benefits of mud, namely for arthritis, rheumatism, broken bones and skin conditions. It’s also been the source of natural beauty treatments for just as long, although you can now pay for the experience in some of the area’s luxury spas. 18

If you like the idea of mud baths in the Mar Menor (and you don’t mind it on your skin), then this could be a big benefit to living in Murcia. There are a few designated “bathing” stations, mainly in Las Charcas, San Pedro del Pinatar, and the southern end of La Manga. Here you can take a specially designed ladder into the shallow water, or have a seat in one of the newer areas built for disabled bathers. Whichever method you choose, you won’t be alone. Mud bathing is a popular attraction here – especially in the warmer months. As a team, we have been in the Costa Calida region of Murcia for years, so the mud baths along the Mar Menor are no secret to us. However, if you haven’t taken a trip down to the “sea of health” yet, make sure you stop by for your own treatment. It’s well worth the time, and – even better – it’s free, courtesy of Mother Nature.

Out with the olde – in with the NEW!!! By Tony Myles

T

he world of Golf will change on January1st 2019 and many would say that it is long overdue. Although there are areas where the sport is thriving it is generally in decline. The chaps who gather on the tee several times each week are getting older and the pipeline of enthusiastic young Tigers is drying up.

Are you SERIOUS?

There have also been a number of occasions when the game has been held up to ridicule as TV detectives eagerly watch every move in order to report

28

any minor contravention. Typical of this is the case of Matthew Southgate who was close to qualifying for his PGA card when at one over par his birdie putt was deflected by a leaf blowing across the green. Unaware that he should have replayed the shot for no penalty he merely sank the par putt only to discover that this was in fact he had incurred a four shot penalty thus dashing any hopes of PGA qualification. So whilst many courses have made efforts to modify the game in order to attract new players these have generally been gimmicks and a departure from the classic game.

LCG Golf Now the PGA and the USGA have recognised that the sport needs to also move in a direction that allows for the demands of the modern player. Some will argue that these are small steps but nevertheless for an organisation not know for making any significant changes, these must be viewed as very welcome adjustments and an indication that a common sense approach to the sport is beginning to take affect.

January 2019 Some of the Rule changes that can be applied from January12019. 1. If your ball moves on the green as you replace it there will be no penalty. You simply replace it. Likewise if you move your ball whilst searching for it once again there will be no penalty for doing so. 2. The need to have the flagstick attended is no longer necessary as there is no penalty for hitting it. And whilst on the green indentations may be repaired prior to putting and you can even touch the line of the putt. 3. In the bunker you can remove any loose impediment which means that the risk of damaging your wedge on an errant stone is no longer a risk.

4. With a nod towards the need to speed the game the Associations have decreed that you no longer need to rush back to the tee to replay a shot that went over the fence into the farmer's pastures. You can now drop at the point of entry with a two shot penalty. Sadly this does not apply to the professional game. 5. On the green the player can repair minor marks and indentations. These and other changes take affect from 1st January and until that date the existing rules still apply. Further modifications which will streamline the game is the reduction of the time allowed in searching for a lost ball. The previous five minutes is reduced to three minutes. The time permitted for taking a shot is also reduced to forty seconds. How many of your colleagues will fail when measured with this limitation? These and other changes are an excellent move forward by the Associations and they are welcomed.

Now what other regulations do you think should be amended or totally binned?

a Costa Golfer Magazine offers all the Golf Societies in Spain the opportunity of presenting a short profile of their organisation. In the first issue we featured one of the newest additions to the list with a look at the Montgo Golf Society and this has indeed stimulated a lot of interest from many others. So, this month we open the page to one of the oldest as we feature the Levante Society with many thanks to the current Captain Roger Miller for his input. The Levante Golf Society was formed in 1993 and that means that this year they will be celebrating 25 years in the Costa Blanca. In the early years they tended to play twice a month alternating between Oliva Nova and La Sella. Today they have doubled the frequency and enjoy their golf at a variety of courses. Their membership is still open for new members, but they already have 76 full members who play regu30

larly of which only 10 are lady members so as Roger says they are happy to consider new applications. The process is simple and friendly as they would invite applicants to join them at three events during which they would play with a committee member to produce a score card for handicap validation purposes. They have a wide range of abilities and so this means that any reasonable player can be accommodated. Their lowest handicap at present is 8.0 and 8.3 for men and women respectively. Roger currently plays to his 25 handicap. I asked Roger if he had any tips or suggestions which have helped him. and he replied – “As I get older I know how perceptive that well known golf adage is – drive for show. Putt for dough!” If you would like to join the Levante Golf Society, then do contact them directly. The simplest method is by email with your details to lgs.captain@gmail.com – you can also read more about them on their web site www.levantegolfsociety.com - enjoy your golf.

T

abarca is one island yet many at the same time. It is both bustling and quiet, with beaches and coves in which to lose yourself. It is just a stone’s throw from Alicante, yet comfortably cut off from the outside world. And it attracts both those who savour ancient history and a younger generation who are wowed by what the island has to offer. You go to Tabarca yearning for the sea, and leave with a hundred reasons to return. The island’s greatest attractions are its beaches and coves and those tucked-away places that its lovers know so well. Visitors come to soak up the sea in all its glory, to bask in the sunshine, explore the rocky shore and wallow in clear and bountiful waters. To buy a t-shirt proclaiming you were there. To try the typical dishes rustled up in its restaurants. To explore its fortified walls, which whisper of pirates and make us smile today yet made us tremble in days of yore. To rest and relax, far from the madding crowd. To hear the seagulls and watch them fly. Also known as Isla Plana or “Flat Island”, as it is flat and long, the island of Tabarca comes alive in high season, its small harbour welcoming boatloads of sealoving visitors every half hour, from Alicante, Santa Pola, Guardamar, Torrevieja and even Benidorm. Just the arrival is quite a show in itself, with the sea stretching out all turquoise and transparent, suggestive of what awaits visitors to this magical place. Fish teem alongside the boats, free from the fear of fishermen, as fishing is prohibited on the island. tabarcaplayaFirst thought upon arrival: where to swim? If beach and only beach is your thing, then head for the central stretch of coastline, just along from the jetty. Here, your maritime experience, which began when you stepped on the boat, will continue until you head home, with the scheduled passenger transport boats often joined by visiting yachts, many of which drop anchor opposite the beach. On terra firma, parasols and sun loungers, beach bars and restaurants are all at your service, catering to your every need. The water is calm, and so limpid that you can see your feet clearly beneath the surface. Overlooking the beach is the Tabarca Museum. Take a moment to drop in and learn about the island: its geography, flora and fauna, culture and history. Then step back into the present, as embodied in its streets and its souvenir and craft shops. Tabarca, buceoTabarca became Spain’s first National Marine Reserve in 1986. Thanks to this official status, created for the protection, regeneration and development of fishing resources and to protect the underwater 34

flora and fauna, it enjoys a rich marine life, with popular diving spots hinting at the sub-aquatic paradise that lies hidden within its depths. Visitors to the island fall into two camps: those who stay on the beach and those who seek out the best cove in which to settle down and swim to their heart’s content. Throughout practically the entire island, you can find a spot to lay down your towel and head for the water. Suitable footwear is, however, highly advisable, as the entrances to the coves are rocky. If you fancy a stroll around the town, you will find it to your right as you arrive. The gateway to the town is a portico, which welcomes you into the inhabited part of the island and onto Calle d’Enmig or Middle Street. Tabarca has very recently undergone a process of paving, which has greatly improved the appearance of its streets and made them very comfortable to walk on. Calle d’Enmig is festooned with gift shops and souvenir shops, with a sprinkling of bars and restaurants. Keep walking and you will reach the town square, where a festival in honour of the local patron saints is heartily celebrated towards the end of June, and where the patron saint of sailors, the Virgin del Carmen, is honoured with music into the wee small hours and with a curious maritime procession. The island also has a lighthouse, a watchtower and an 18th-century Governor’s House – La Casa del Gobernador – which is now a charming hotel. The entire island enjoys sea views, is peppered with coves – some of which are hard to reach – and is bathed by remarkable emerald-green waters. The cuisine on Tabarca has a capital C for caldero tabarquino, the local stew. Expert hands have spent entire lifetimes preparing this dish and have handed the recipe down through the generations. A leading figure among the islanders is 82-year-old Gloria Ruso, who is a veritable repository of stories about Tabarca and who remembers when all of the neighbours were fishermen and the island lived off fishing. The main ingredients of caldero tabarquino are fish: scorpion fish plus smaller fish known as fry, which are cooked with ñora peppers, garlic, pepper and salt to make the stock. The scorpion fish is served first, alongside potatoes daubed with a little aioli, followed by rice. calderotabarcaAnd there are many more dishes for you to try on the island:fideuà noodles, all types of rice dishes (arroces), particularly those with shellfish, squid, octopus, troll-caught lechola fish, fried whitebait… On the island of Tabarca you will find set menus ranging from some 12 to 30 euros or, if you don’t want to lose any time away from the sea and sun, you can always grab some finger food for a quick snack.

LCG Costa Blanca Focus The soundtrack of Tabarca is that of waves breaking softly upon the beach, the cry of gulls and the music that drifts out of some establishments. In the evening, we came across a family from Lithuania who had spent the day on the island and were about to get the boat back to the mainland. The eldest son, 20-year-old Rokas, told us of the good impression he had of Tabarca, particularly the small-town tranquillity that pervades the island. He had also done some diving and admired the marvellous marine reserves harboured by the island. Helen is from Manchester, in the United Kingdom. She considers herself privileged to be staying at the old governor’s house, and she recounts how, when the last boat has left for the mainland and Tabarca is “alone”, there is a very special atmosphere on the island. Those who spend several days on Tabarca, either because they have a house there or they are staying in lodgings, tend to gather to watch the sunset. A stunning and rather special sunset, looking out across the water towards the mainland, waves lapping at the rocks, gulls perched and wheeling. An experience that every visitor to Tabarca should enjoy at least once.

nyone who has seen the Nutcracker ballet will know how magical it is when toys come to life. You can also feed your children’s imagination through a world of old wooden and tin toys made in Alicante. Wooden soldiers, toy cars, rocking horses and beautifully-designed dolls houses with miniature furniture take us back to a less sophisticated time. A time when children needed to use their imagination more to play games. They needed to invent their own storylines to make their toys come to life. Visit the headquarters of the magical Three Kings in Ibi Now, you can take the children on a trip back in time to the toy museums in Denia and Ibi in the Alicante region of Spain. A great place to take the children is on a day trip to the mountain town of Ibi, whose toy-making industry is still a very important part of Spain’s economy. Three Kings statue in Ibi, Alicante It has been said that Ibi is the headquarters of the Three Kings, who traditionally deliver gifts to the children on January 6. This could well be true due to the number of toys being made in the town, which is home to a statue and fountain dedicated to the Three Kings in the Plaza de los Reyes Magos. At the turn of the 20th century, Ibi relied on farming and collecting ice from the surrounding mountains. From this, an ice-cream industry flourished. About this time, the toy industry began, which played an important part on the town’s economy. Ibi is now the largest toy manufacturing town in Spain with 37 companies producing about 40% of all the country’s toys. The town is also home to a Technical Institute for children’s toys and other products aimed at youngsters. The aim of the organisation is to give toy makers’ access to state-of-the-art new technologies and materials.

icente Gandía Winery was founded in 1885 by Vicente Gandía Plà. Since then, the property has kept the same name. It has also kept the essence of our passion for wine, handed down over the generations with a sole objective: to improve, year on year, the winery’s commitment to the world of wine. This was the vision of Vicente Gandía, first generation and founder of the company. •1885 - Vicente Gandía founds the winery in El Grao, Valencia. •1930 - The winery in Liria is opened. •1971 - ‘Castillo de Liria’, the first bottled wine of the Community of Valencia, is born.

Launch of ‘El Miracle’. •2006 – First vintage of ‘Hoya de Cadenas Bobal Viñas Viejas’. •2007 – Chamber of Commerce Award for Business Globalisation and Award for Best Winery in the Community of Valencia from Valencia Polytechnic University.

•1984 - Gandía becomes leading exporter of Spanish wine to the United Kingdom. •1985 - Construction of the winery in Chiva. •1992 - Hoya de Cadenas Estate is purchased. •1995 - ‘Hoya de Cadenas Reserve’ is born. •1996 - Jose Mª Gandía is named member of the Noble Order of Wine Knights in the United Kingdom. •1999 - First vintage of ‘Ceremonia’. •2000 - ‘Fusta nova’ is born.

COMMON FAULTS AND FIXES POOR BODY MOTION AND COIL Poor body motion and coil are directly related to the posture which you establish at the address position. Whilst creating good posture, influences how the body can move, it is important to understand the motion that the body must perform to create a repeatable, effective swing. The coiling motion of the whole body creates torsion and resistance which creates stored energy which can be used to accelerate the club on the downswing. This stored energy together with the shifting of the weight provides the club head speed which is ultimately transferred through the arms to the hands and then to the club head as it strikes the ball. Without this coil or stored energy, shots will lack power, distance and accuracy.

1

2

3

4

FAULT Most players swings are “arm dominated” and the bigger muscles of the body are underused. Their swings and their power are made predominately by the arms and the hands and the only way they can generate more power is to swing faster which causes numerous control problems. They will also tend to tire before the end of the round as this type of swing is energy sapping.

FIX In order to feel the correct body motion and weight shift, you can practice this simple exercise. Take your set up position with correct posture. With both hands, hold a club in front and across your shoulders with the club shaft pointing to an imaginary target. Coil into your backswing whilst maintaining good posture so that your shoulders rotate approximately 90 degrees. To complete the exercise rotate to the finish of your swing with most of your weight on your front foot and your hips directly above this foot. Notice how your club and shoulders align perpendicular to the incline angle to form a “T”.

e all know how the areas around Costa Blanca and Costa Calida offer no shortage of fun as a result of the glorious climate and the beautiful beaches. But what can we do when the cooler months roll in? Thankfully the fun never stops in the south of Spain as there’s everything from chic gastro bars to decadent nightclubs and stylish casinos to help you get through the Spanish winter! We’ve already shown how the Browns gastrobar has quickly risen to become one of the stars in La Zenia’s nightlife scene. And whether it’s investigating the fine dining options at Aticcook or checking out the tapas at the Iberia Gastrobar in Javea, you’ll never run out of options for delicious food in the area. Those who fancy relaxing with a cocktail in some seriously stylish surroundings should head to Bela Dama in Moraira to try a romantic drink with some pretty views. And the Belroy Lounge in Benidorm always provides a great place to grab a low-key drink and enjoy the wide range of musical offerings that range from sultry jazz to some great Cuban and Latin sounds. Obviously it’s Benidorm that really excels in nightlife entertainment with the clubs on Avenida Communitat Valencia giving us all plenty of excuses to hit the dancefloor. And even if you tire of the beats, then the Casino Mediterraneo is located nearby and it can give you the chance to play the real-life versions of casino games like blackjack that you know from gaming websites like InterCasino. Other more relaxing nightlife options include heading to the Cine Colci, Cine Roma, and the Kinepolisto cinemas to check out some of the latest English language movies doing the rounds. But of course, there’s so much to see and do that you’ll rarely get chance to relax with a good movie. So that whether it’s checking out some of the uniquely Spanish festivals like one of the Moors and Christians fiesta, or just staying at home to practice your online blackjack skills, you’ll find no shortage of entertainment in Costa Blanca and Costa Calida this winter.

LCG Information on the Costa Blanca COSTA BLANCA

There is over 100 kilometers of sandy beach from Valencia in the north to Murcia in the south, best known for the Blue Flags they have been given. The Blue Flag Awards are presented by the European Federation of Environmental Education (EFEE) every year, in recognition of the excellent quality of water and amenities.

COSTA BLANCA MARKETS

I

t´s got to be arguably the most famous coast in Spain, Costa Blanca draws millions of tourists each year. Lying on the eastern coast, the White Coast is one of those resorts where everyone can find their place under the sun, from sophisticated towns where life goes on 25 hours a day to quaint little villages where the peace and tranquility is feature. Its clear blue waters and miles of white sandy beaches are certainly a major attraction. Beautiful mountains parallel to the sea are on the north coast. Here you can marvel at the Moorish villages where olive trees and hidden coves abound. To the south is where you will find the beaches mushrooming with palm trees, the sparkling, turquoise sea and rows of cafes and restaurants. Within the mountainous interior are a series of fascinating medieval towns and fortified villages which have been largely unaffected by modernism and tourism. Inland from the beaches, Costa Blanca has one of Spain’s most fertile areas. The region is renowned for its citrus trees supplied all over the world. Almond trees and date palms abounding with blossoms also blanket the earth. Every part of Costa Blanca is indeed a treasure to discover, a place to relax and enjoy. You can bask in the sun, hide away at some secret cove, or meet new friends and party like there s no tomorrow. Whatever you fancy, Costa Blanca is sure to please. Alicante is the capital and major city of Costa Blanca , but it is Benidorm that attracts the most visitors. Benidorm is an expansive holiday playground and tourist spot in every sense of the word. The place offers every amenity a tourist could want. With a safe, kindred atmosphere, safe waters and a host of activities to do, Benidorm is ideal for family vacations. It also has a lively nightlife, with hundreds of bars and clubs catering mainly for British tourists. There are good quality, cheap bus services within the main resorts and to towns in close proximity. Taxi cabs are also good value, especially for those traveling as a group. There are also some affordable, local car rental companies, best with those wishing to explore off the beaten paths. The Costa Blanca , with its striking mix of sandy beaches and top-of-the-line resorts, has somehow managed to fuse the sophistication of city life and the simplicity of nature into one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.

LCG Golfing Gadgets WINN GOLF CLUB DRI-TAC GRIPS Replace worn out golf club grips once a year for better performance.

C

hanging the golf club grip is necessary when they are old or worn. The feeling of doing your own regripping is great, and not as difficult as you might think. You end up with a “new” golf club which is easier to handle, with a lighter grip and without fear of losing the club in a swing. As a rule of thumb, you should change grip once a year. I recommend grips from Winn which provides quality grips for both fishing rods and golf clubs. The Winn Golf Club Dri-tac Grips comes in packages of one, nine or 13 on Amazon. One grip costs only a few dollars.

GARMIN APPROACH S6 GPS GOLF WATCH Beautiful and functional Golf Watch with GPS and touchscreen display.

T

he Garmin Approach S6 is a GPS watch specially designed for golfers. The high-res touchscreen display gives you instant feedback on your swing, where you are on the course and other metrics.

Touch Targeting lets you touch a point on the map and it gives you the precise distance. It comes in three colors, dark, white and black with orange details. Battery lasts for 10 hours which should be plenty enough for a good round of golf. The purchase price is usually a few hundred dollars but check with Amazon for the right price.

Funny Golf Quotes:

Mark of respect

"I had a wonderful experience on the golf course today. I had a hole in nothing. Missed the ball and sank the divot". Don Adams

Two golfers are ready to play on the 11th tee as a funeral cortege passes by. The first player stops, doffs his cap, and bows his head as the cortege passes. “That was a really nice thing to do,” the second golfer says. “It’s good to see there is still some respect in the world.”

"Golf is the hardest game in the world to play, and the easiest to cheat at". Dave Hill

“Well, it’s only right,” the first golfer replies. “I was married to her for 35 years.”

"Golf, like the measles, should be caught young, for, if postponed to riper years, the results may be serious". P.G. Wodehouse

World’s worst

"The only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course". Billy Graham "Nothing dissects a man in public quite like golf". Brent Musberger "Golf is an ideal diversion but a ruinous disease". Gerald Ford

"Over the years, I've studied the habits of golfers. I know what to look for. Watch their eyes. Fear shows up when there is an enlargement of the pupils. Big pupils lead to big scores". Sam Snead

A golfer was having a terrible round – 20-over par for the front nine with scores of balls lost in water or rough. When his caddie then coughed as he steadied himself over a 12-inch putt on the 10th, he lost it. “You’ve got to be the worst caddie in the world!” he yelled. “I doubt it,” replied the caddie, deadpan. “That would be too much of a coincidence.”

A word of advice

If you drink, don’t drive. And don’t even putt.

Drowning your sorrows

After a particularly poor round, a golfer spotted a lake as he walked despondently up the 18th. He looked at his caddie and said, “I’ve played so badly all day, I think I’m going to drown myself in that lake.” The caddie, quick as a flash, replied, “I’m not sure you could keep your head down that long.” The fisherman
