A Beautiful Plan by Sandi Butler Hughes & Lesley Harris Colvett
No matter how large or how small a wedding will be, the bride must have a plan. Three of Memphis’ finest wedding and event planners share a few tips to make the wedding day a dream come true.
motto,” she said. While a spectacular wedding is certainly a great start, she wants the newlyweds to remember this bit of wisdom: a wedding is not a marriage. Sheril shared, “Be happy with the one you love, and everything else will fall in place. The wedding will be a special memory, but it’s just one of many, many more to come.”
Sheril Greenstein, owner of Shindigs by Sheril, suggests that as soon as the ring
Betsy Comella McKay, owner of Salt Style & Events, feels very blessed to work in
is in sight for upcoming nuptials, get organized and hire a planner. “One can never begin planning too early,” she said, “For most brides, this is their first wedding; however, this is my hundredth!” Sheril listens to the bride’s vision and dreams, then she shares her expert advice throughout every decision.
an industry where the daily focus is on making things beautiful and memorable. “It is so much fun to work with clients bringing their vision to life for a party or wedding through the use of décor, food and beverage, and music,” she said.
With her experience, creativity and compassion, she works to ensure the planning process is smooth and stress free for the bride and entire family. When Sheril works with a bride (and usually her mom) for a year, spending countless hours together, they form relationships and truly become lifelong friends. “I love when I plan the entire family’s special occasions, from numerous family weddings to special birthday celebrations. I feel like I become part of the family.”
As an event planner, she wears many hats. Much of her role involves leading vendor meetings, working on various layouts, and reviewing contracts, and other business-related tasks. “Other times I play mediator between a bride and a relative,” she continued. “Best of all, I end up being friends with my clients and enjoy seeing them grow and change through the years.” As Betsy shared one of her favorite parts of being an event planner is that no two events are the same, as she creates a unique and one-of-a-kind special day.
Trends that she is seeing is for an “experience” for the guests, from the invitations to the moment they leave the reception! “Attention to detail is an invaluable trend that sets every wedding apart. From signature cocktails to latenight snacks and even special pets, creative details can be incorporated throughout the ceremony and reception. “I love to create surprises around every corner — a donut wall or bourbon tasting station, breakfast tacos for the Austin-born bride or beignets for the Tulane grad. It’s all about the details that bring out each couple’s personality.” As for the week and day of, the bride’s focus should be only on her groom, family and friends while Sheril takes care of everything else. “‘Whatever it takes to get it done!’ is my 64 / January 2018
Betsy has seen the trends in the wedding business constantly evolve, and currently her favorite thing to do is to contrast the existing décor of a venue through furniture, colors, and other décor items. “For example, if a venue is neutral and traditional, mix it up by incorporating bright colors, soft seating, and modern touches. I love showing brides all the ways a venue can be designed for their special day,” she said. As the event is being planned, Betsy also suggested that brides slow down and enjoy each step of the planning process. “It goes by in the blink of an eye and this is one time in life where it’s acceptable to make the day all about you!”
Audrey Hurst, owner of Audrey Hurst of Audrey Hurst Events, enjoys creating “the best day ever” for her brides. She says her goal is to be the steady thread throughout the planning process – a source for endless creative ideas, practical and level-headed advice as well as wisdom from experience as far as “what works, and what doesn’t.” “My role varies with every client based on their stage of life, hometown, and their own strengths and what excites them about planning a wedding,” she said. At the end of the wedding day, Audrey wants her client to feel that she added immeasurable value to the planning process, and of course for them to say “that was the best day ever!” Audrey’s favorite part of being a wedding planner is the friendships she has made with her clients and vendors. “Being in close communication with a client for 6 to 18 months inevitably walks us both through different life events. It’s a privilege to be along for the ride for the wedding stuff – but also for the everyday life celebrations!” Audrey encourage brides to avoid “trends” as much as possible, and rather find meaningful, sentimental details that they will remember long after the wedding day. “I have seen more of my brides seeking timeless, ‘old-fashioned’ traditions – including brides and grooms who choose to forego seeing each other before that walk down the aisle!” Audrey offers a main piece of advice to newly-engaged couples: prioritize. “Decide what’s most important to you both about your wedding day – then prioritize those items on your timeline and in your budget and be willing to let go of some of the things lower on your list. I think being tethered to reality early on provides a much more enjoyable planning experience!”

GIVING TH E PE R F E CT GIFT by Sandi Butler Hughes & Lesley Harris Colvett
China to linens, beautiful wedding gift options abound. 4Memphis chatted with local shops and boutiques for advice so wedding guests can find the ideal present for the special couple! Babcock Gifts: Brooks Terry Babcock Gifts is a perennial choice for bridal registries in Memphis. They recently relocated to the Laurelwood Shopping Center, and offer the same exquisite selection for wedding gifts. “The most popular registry items are almost always china, and the current trend is to pair china with other dishes to either dress up or dress down the table setting,” said Brooks, proprietor of Babcock Gifts. He said when picking out a special gift, that it is almost always the gift givers personal preference. What they think will be memorable to the bride and groom. Brooks recommends to the bride when registering “If you are receiving china, crystal or silver from a relative as a gift and are going to fill in, bring a place setting to the store. Always bring a sample of what you already have in place in your home if you are trying to build on something you already own.” Another great piece of advice: “if the groom will be joining the bride for registration, bring two cars!” Brooks laughs. “Always remember, if you are uncomfortable with a choice you can always change it!”
More Than Words Lee Ann McGhee More Than Words is more than just a fun gift shop in Germantown. Their wedding gifts are fabulous and unique. Lee Ann said gold & rose gold are on the climb. She also says they have lots of brides who love neutral tones (cream, brown, grey, tan, etc.) but they are seeing more and more girls wanting to add in pops of gold/rose gold as much as possible. “You can never go wrong with anything personalized for the couple, whether it’s a marble cutting board with their initial or one of our handcrafted ‘Established 2018’ signs, they are always able to look back at their item for years to come and remember the joyous exciting 66 / January 2018
time of their wedding!” Lee Ann said when picking out that perfect gift for the couple, the more unique the better! “When customers select an item that is exclusive to our shop the item is instantly special and sentimental to the recipient.” Whether it’s a vase, a piece of pottery, or a wine glass, each time the couple uses the item(s) they will always be able to remember who gifted it to them. Lee Ann’s suggestions to the bride when selecting for her registry: “When selecting pottery, glassware, etc. it never hurts to ask for one extra item to go with your set. It may feel odd to ask for 7 glasses but when one breaks down the road you’ll be glad you have the extra to still complete your set when hosting your guests.” She adds that it is also important to make sure you provide options for your friends and family that cover a wide spectrum of budget options. Everyone wants to know they are giving you something you specifically have asked for because they know you’ll love it!
Lisa Mallory Interior Design: Lisa Mallory and Cindi Marshall Lisa Mallory Design in The Shops of Chickasaw Oaks Village has an array of items for brides to select when registering for wedding gifts. The shop offers linens and decorative accessories for the home. Cindi Marshall said, “In addition to china and crystal, brides need bedding, towels, throws, pillows, lamps and accessories for their new home. She also suggests that brides should carefully choose the items they want across all price points. “In the case of linens, some of the items are more expensive than an average person wants to spend or they don’t feel like it is a ‘special’ gift. However, one bath towel is just as important as a champagne glass to a new couple starting out. You may not be able to buy the entire set of sheets but a pair of pillowcases is much appreciated. Brides also love to receive gift certificates!” Another trend for today’s brides is online shopping. The wedding registry can be viewed from a phone or computer,
click-to-pay and the pros at Lisa Mallory handle the rest. This is an especially great option for out-of-town guests. Lisa Mallory Design has been in business for 23 years, but the registry is a fairly new option for brides. Cindi said, “We hear constantly ‘I wish I had gotten more from Lisa Mallory!’”
Social: A Shop For Gracious Living: Carmen Bond Social: A Shop For Gracious Living recently moved to a new, expanded location, and they offer numerous items for brides to select for their registry. Carmen Bond, owner, noted, “Most brides always register for a fine china pattern, a crystal pattern, an everyday dinnerware pattern, and a flatware pattern, along with placemats and napkins to coordinate. Brides always love serving pieces, whether it is a fun pottery piece, a wood serving board or bowl, or some pieces in the same pattern as their china.” Another popular trend the Bridal Consultants at Social see often for new brides is to mix and match a variety of different china patterns, or the bride will register only for accent plates and serving pieces to coordinate with china collections they are inheriting from their families. What makes a for a perfect wedding gift? “Something the bride has registered for. Brides love to complete their china, crystal, and flatware most of all,” she said. When choosing items for their registry, brides should include the items they need most and items that they love and will treasure for a lifetime! Carmen suggests that brides plan ahead for the future when selecting their registry. “Brides should keep in mind that while they may not be hosting formal dinner parties, family gatherings and holiday celebrations now, they most likely will be as they get older and have families of their own. They will appreciate having registered and received formal china, sterling silver flatware and crystal. Then, the tradition of passing these priceless heirlooms down to their children and grandchildren can be continued!”

Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Walter Barnett, Jr.
72 / January 2018
Lee Anderson Roper and Edwin Walter Barnett, Jr. were united in marriage at Independent Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN, on November 25, 2017. The double-ring ceremony was performed by the Reverend Edward Norton. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Tully Bond and the late Mr. Michael Allen Roper. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Barnett, all of Memphis, TN. Lee Anderson wore an A-line long sleeved gown, custom designed by Monique Lhuiller. It was made with ivory and white French tulle with handmade embroidered beaded lace with an illusion neckline. She wore both a cathedral-length train and two-tiered illusion veil. The lace on the wedding gown was echoed on both the train and veil. Her jewelry accessories were a special pair of two-tiered pearl and diamond earrings borrowed from a dear family friend as well as a French antique tiara adorned with crystals, a gift from her mother. A blue, heart-shaped piece of fabric from her late father’s favorite shirt was sewn onto the inside of her gown. Also sewn on the inside of the gown was a sentimental piece of lace given to her by her mother. Completing her ensemble was a bouquet of different shades of white peonies, tulips, lilies of the valley, roses, and greenery wrapped in satin ribbon. In her bouquet, she carried a handkerchief given to her by her paternal grandmother that belonged to her paternal great grandmother, and tied to that was a small photo of her father. Attending the bride were her Maids of Honor, Jolie Browning, Savannah Roper, and Meredith Garvin. Her Matrons of Honor were Mary Madison Wells and Elizabeth Shanahan. Her other Bridesmaids were Hannah Walker, Hannah Bingham, Amy Dempsey, Rachel Jayroe, Seabran Lee, Ali Delgado, Sydney Naylor, Stevie Leonard, Jennifer Kirschten and Caroline Sutton, cousin of the bride. The Flower Girls were Abby Crane Budzak, cousin of the bride, Caroline Nannie, Gracely Barnett and Wesley Kate Barnett, nieces of the groom. The Bridesmaids wore pale gray satin floor length dresses and carried bouquets that complimented the bridal bouquet. The Flower Girls wore smocked, handmade heirloom dresses with French lace and satin ribbons. Ed Barnett served his son as Best Man. Walter’s Groomsmen were Wes Barnett, brother of the groom, Michael Roper, brother of the bride, Joel Reeves, Will Hayden, Ben Still, Derek Haynes, Rhobb Hunter, Trey Manley, Patrick Boyer, Stewart Vaughn, Clay Wammick, Neal Quirk, Mitchell Stogner, David Ruben, Alston Owen, and Nash Gilmore. His Ushers included, Tully Bond, brother of the bride, Devin Thompson, cousin of the bride, Philip Yandell, William Walker, Colter Albritton, and Lane Bobo.
The Ring Bearers were Braxton Sutton, cousin of the bride, and Charlie Nannie, nephew of the groom. They carried handmade smocked pillows made by the bride’s maternal grandmother. The Bell Ringer was Reed Budzak, cousin of the bride. A selection of favorite sacred, Christmas, and classical music was chosen by the mother of the bride and arranged and presented by Mrs. Jennifer Valezquez, organist at IPC, along with the Beth Luscombe Orchestra. Vocalists for the wedding were Natalia, Christina, and Hannah Morris of Southern Halo, long time friends of the bride’s family, as well as Meredith Lessley of New York City, friend of the bride. Preceding the Lee Anderson’s entrance was a bagpiper playing Scotland the Brave, in honor of the Walter’s heritage. The scripture readers were the bride’s uncles, Scott Budzak and Brian Sutton. A reception was held at the Memphis Country Club. Guests enjoyed various themes throughout the night including a speakeasy with music provided by Jeremy Shrader and company, a disco featuring a silent disco and a light up dance floor, a sports bar with Blind Mississippi Morris playing as well as a pronto pup truck. The tent featured the primary band, The Right On Band, and had clear walls and ceiling so that guests could enjoy the late night fireworks. A fun feature that bridged all of the rooms together was a hallway that included a wall of hanging cones of bacon with the phrase, “I don’t like bacon….said no one ever….” hanging above - an idea suggested by the bride’s stepdad. The couple danced to their favorite song, “Fly Me to the Moon” in front of their adoring friends and family. At midnight guests were treated to custom milkshakes adorned with donut holes, Christmas suckers, mini cupcakes, popcorn, and other goodies. French fries completed the late night treats. Brandon Chesbro Photography of Nashville, TN, captured every special moment! Lee Anderson and Walter enjoyed a sparkler send off as they departed the reception. After a honeymoon to the Maldives and Dubai, the couple is making their home in Harbor Town. January 2018 / 73

Dr. and Mrs. Charles Maurice Groeschell
74 / January 2018
Kathleen Elizabeth Newell and Dr. Charles (Chip) Maurice Groeschell were united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony on September 16, 2017. Father Mike Werkhoven performed the ceremony at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee.
The Maid of Honor was the bride’s sister, Anna Grace Newell, along with bridesmaids, Alexis Bell, Mallory Berumen, Callie Grant, Meagan Jones, Jordan Langston, Janell Niederriter, Katherine Ray, Emily Williams, and Harper Zeno.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Kris Shepherd and Mr. Tim Newell. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Groeschell. “Chip and I were set up on a blind date in October 2013. We went to The Fox and Hound to watch football, but it also happened to fall on the Arkansas vs. Alabama football game. I was reluctant to go at first because I knew he was a die hard Bama fan, and I will forever ‘Call the Hogs’. Once the conversation started, it was like the game didn’t even matter anymore. The Hogs lost terribly, but Chip never once rubbed it in that his team was better that night. After the date, I knew there was something special about Chip that I never wanted to lose. We’ve had so much fun the last 3 years, and I can’t wait for many more! The bride and groom both grew up in Memphis, so the couple wanted their out-of-town relatives and guests to experience Memphis. Showcasing their hometown started with the invitations and was carried throughout the entire wedding day. The Hernando Desoto Bridge was incorporated in the lining of the
invitation’s envelope; welcome bags included Rendezvous popcorn and Dinstuhl’s candy; the bride walked down the aisle to Elvis’ “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”; she wore blue suede shoes as her something blue; and the couple’s first dance was Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” Musicians for the wedding ceremony were Earl Randle, pianist and cantor and the Beth Luscombe Strings. The Reception followed at The Columns with dinner and dancing. Dinner was catered by CFY and the wedding cake and grooms cake were created by The Flour Garden. The music during the cocktail hour was provided by Charvey Mac followed by the Memphis dance band, Party Planet.
Brian Groeschell was his brother’s best man, along with groomsmen, Tod Blanton, Chris Darby, Andrew Lichliter, Bruce Longo, Andrew McKenny, Jonathan Roney, Chris Skinner, Matthew Thompson, and Joshua Wyatt. The whole day was captured beautifully by videographer, Message in a Bottle, live painting by artist, Bess Farris, and Rob and Deanna Photography.
The bride’s dress was love at first sight, designed by Martina Liana from Maggie Louise Bridal. The bridemaid’s were wearing long charcoal grey dresses from Bella Bridemaids all carrying Deedra Stone Designs vibrant bouquets. The flowers reflected Kathleen’s choice of shade of pink and coral accented with chartreuse green. All looked stunning.

THE CELEBRATION OF MUSIC ET H AN BO RTN I C K TO HO LD TA LEN T SEA RCH IN M EM PHIS By Langston Meyers
Being the home of the Blues and birthplace of Rock n’ Roll, Memphians know something about music, and, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, so does “The World’s Youngest Solo Musician to Headline His Own Concert Tour,” Ethan Bortnick. This 16 year-old began when he asked his parents to take piano lessons at age 5. He quickly discovered his ability to hear a song once and immediately play it back note for note. Since then, aside from headlining his own tour, he has performed with artists like Beyonce, Elton John, and Josh Groban. On January 7, Ethan is performing at the Buckman Center for Performing Arts. Until then, he is searching for local talent to be featured on his PBS television show, Celebration of Music. Singers, Dancers, or anyone with any kind of musical ability is encouraged to send audition tapes to this link https://www.celebrationofmusic. com/audition.
1. How did you become the “World’s Youngest Solo Musician to Headline Your Own Concert Tour”? “When I was asked to film my first PBS television special, the folks at AEG Live [a touring company], asked me to perform my concert across America. So, when I started that concert tour at age 9, I became the youngest musician to headline a solo concert tour. I was 9 years, 9 months and 9 days old.” 2. What’s it like performing for so many people at such a young age? “I love what I do! I love performing for people and most of all, I love interacting and meeting so many people. I also get inspired by others and feel that music brings us all together. It is a feeling that is very hard to describe, but I can tell you that there is something powerful about music and about performing it.” 3. What drives your passion for charity, as you have raised $50 million for worldwide nonprofits? “When my younger brother was born, we found out that he was missing half
his heart. Once the doctors and surgeons were able to save him, I was invited to perform for the hospitals fundraising gala. When I performed and saw how much money we raised to help others like my brother, that’s when I got inspired. Since then, I have been honored to be able to use music to help hundreds of different causes.”
4. Why do you think giving back is important? “Giving back is important because everyone deserves a peaceful and normal life. I think everyone can give back no matter who they are. I give back using my music but giving back doesn’t always mean giving money or raising money. I wrote a song called “Two Seconds”, where I talk about the fact that anyone can give back and all it takes is two seconds. They can give someone a smile, a hug, a word of encouragement and so much more. If we all give back just a little bit, this world would be a better place.” 5. What commonalities do you think talented people share? “I truly believe everyone is talented in something. I think everyone has some sort of gift that he/she has been given. I think that the ones that discover it and are encouraged to pursue it are those that may excel at it more.” 6. What do you want those interested in this competition to know? “I believe that music and arts are super important! This is a way for me to be able to help other kids be discovered. I hope that those that have a passion for music and arts can feel safe with this new TV show. This show will not put anyone down and will allow the kids to shine. My goal with this TV show is to allow music and arts to be shared by other kids in a safe and friendly environment. Celebration of Music - Talent Search is going to be seen in cities all over the country and we hope to discover many more kids that love and enjoy music and the arts.”

Christmas with the Salvation Army TU R NING THE HOLIDAYS I N TO A S E AS O N O F GI V I N G By Madison Grinder and Sophie Stockstill While Christmas time is known for giving and receiving, millions of families struggle to make ends meet during a time which is meant to evoke joy and happiness. Thankfully, the Salvation Army’s role in the lives of many struggling people, in Memphis and beyond, has helped keep the spirit of Christmas alive for everyone. Ever since 1865, the Salvation Army has been one of the most prominent international charity organizations in the world. Founded on Protestant Christian values, the Salvation Army has worked tirelessly for many years to spark change through various charitable acts. From disaster recovery to adult rehabilitation, the Salvation Army helps people overcome the various struggles of everyday life. As December approaches, many families struggle to provide the extremities that accompany Christmas. With this in mind, the Salvation Army of Memphis has organized various events that help lift up those who are less-fortunate during this time of year. Primarily, The Angel Tree Program allows people to donate gifts for thousands of underprivileged children and adults; moreover, volunteers are welcomed to help distribute the gifts to families in need on a specific date in December. Along with donating toys, the Salvation Army has also launched the Red Kettle Campaign where volunteers can ring bells to help raise money for the organization at various Kroger locations.
In addition to these special events at Christmastime, the Salvation Army makes a year-long effort to help support thousands of families across Memphis. During my Freshman year, I became involved with the “GPS (Give, Pray, Serve) Squad” of the Salvation Army. In simpler terms, the GPS Squad is a teen branch of the Salvation Army which reaches out to various schools in the Memphis Area. As a team, the GPS Squad works to facilitate monthly activities and events for the families at the Purdue Center of Hope. Along with providing many services to the Salvation Army, the GPS Squad works to indulge the youth of Memphis into the world of community service. Over the years, my involvement in the GPS Squad has helped me to understand the power of service in Memphis, and I have learned that compassion and generosity alone have the power to change lives. Rather than simply giving to those in need, the Salvation Army makes an effort to truly heal and replenish the lives of those who are broken. Because of the Salvation Army’s work, all families in Memphis can view Christmas as a time of harmony rather than a time of stress.

Running for a reason by Haley Clift and Ellie Weeks
On Saturday, December 2, 2017, over 25,000 people participated in St. Jude Marathon Weekend. While people traveled from 49 states and 26 countries to participate in this event, many of these participants are within our own Memphis community, including our youth. High school students from various Memphis schools supported the cause by volunteering, running, and fundraising. Every year, Hutchison freshman students volunteer at the second mile marker. The students encourage runners with signs and distribute water cups. Nealy Parker, a current Hutchison freshman, remarks that, “my experience at the St. Jude Water Station was eye-opening. Alongside the runners, I realized the significance of doing something for a cause. Even though I was only passing out water, my small act encouraged the runners to keep moving toward the finish-line.” It is remarkable our youth community devotes their time and energy to a strenuous sport, such as distance running. However, Parker Shearon, a Briarcrest Junior who ran the half-marathon, remarks that, “it was so easy to run because I was running for such an amazing cause that supports so many children and families.” MUS seniors Benjamin Freeman and Hastings McEwan placed seventh and first in their age groups. When asked about the race, the athletes both felt fortunate to be able to run in the event and represent their school for St. Jude. Freeman and McEwan came together to say that, “it was a great feeling running for all of the patients at St. Jude, and it was very cool to see so many high school students across our city participate in such an important event for the St. Jude patients and families.” High school students like Hutchison Junior, Laura Heathcott, choose to support St. Jude by running and fundraising. For the past two years she has been inspired to fundraise for a reason that is very close to her heart and family. Heathcott explains that, “sometimes it may seem hard to give to a fundraiser or foundation when you do not know where the money is going. However, with St. Jude, people know whom they are giving to, the cause, and the lives that are saved from their donations. Personally, I love raising money in memory of my aunt Laura Lane, and as a result, watching so many give to St. Jude is so important to my family.” Fundraising and supporting the children at St. Jude gives the runners a reason to participate in the races. Participants are willing to go the extra mile by completing the physically challenging race. However, though the race may be challenging, the finish line is much more fulfilling when you run for a reason.
