From the Publisher Seek the Peace and Prosperity of the City in which I have placed you. Jeremiah 29:7 Jim Walker

The Lord Restores Job’s Fortunes …My servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. 10And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. 12And the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning… Job 42: 8-12 8

The Book of Job may seem like a strange passage to draw inspiration from this Hanukkah and Christmas Season, but if we are being honest, I think we would all admit that these past two years, we have had the feeling of being Job or at least being one of Job’s friends. We have seen loved ones lost, businesses destroyed as we have bickered with each other about whether to wear a mask or not and take the vaccine or not. Just as Job’s friend lashed out at him for some secret sin instead of comforting him at his time of loss. In the final passages of Job, the Lord restores prosperity to Job, but only after the Lord rebukes Job and his friends. The restoration occurs only after God instructs Job to pray for his friends. Clearly Job and his friends are living in a community with each other during a time of tremendous stress and they failed each other, but God gave them away to be reconciled to each other and that is the spirit of this holiday season. God has called us to support our fellow Mid-Southerners, by praying for them, giving to them and doing business with them wherever possible. These next few months may determine the success or failure of many local businesses and charities. The NovemberDecember shopping and giving season will determine if the not-for-profit sectors make their budgets to continue their work in our community for another year. It will determine for many of our locally owned retailers and restaurants if they will actually earn a profit for the year. Imagine owning a store, going to work every day, paying employees, taxes and

expenses monthly and not expecting to make a profit until the last two months of the year. Imagine an organization such as For the Kingdom in Raleigh providing 5,000 meals weekly for at-risk children and seniors not knowing until the last two months of the year whether funds will be sufficient for them to provide those meals next year. Imagine Church Health providing daily medical services for the working poor or daily meals to the homeless on our streets, and not knowing until the last two months of the year whether the funds will be sufficient for them to continue serving them next year. We in the City of Memphis are in a relationship with each other, and these relationships must be built and maintained for the good of all of us. The economic importance of building relationships with each other by shopping at locally owned businesses and supporting locally focused charities is essential to a community’s success. Covid has separated us from each other and drawn us closer together at the same time. We have fought the Pandemic together, we have lost loved ones, we have seen friends lose their jobs and businesses. God gives us the opportunity this holiday season to come together, put an end to the destructive influences of this Pandemic, and build on those things that have drawn us together by forgiving and praying for each other. Doing business with our local merchants and donating to our local charities brings life and prosperity to the Mid-South. The encouragement of peace and prosperity is the mission of 4Memphis and something we are all called to embrace this holiday season. Seek the Peace and Prosperity of Memphis. Jim Walker

Building Momentum: C E L E B R AT I N G T H E H O L I D A Y S W H I L E SUPPORTING LOCAL NONPROFITS This holiday season will most definitely be a crazy one, with shipping delays, social distancing, and supply chain issues making all of us want a little more eggnog in 2021. Don’t let the pandemic get you down this year! Thankfully, nonprofits across Memphis are offering ways that will keep you and your family from becoming Scrooges. The three organizations featured below have opportunities to engage your family in holiday fun while you support their important causes. Nonprofits have struggled through the pandemic, and your support is vitally needed to continue these organization’s services, as well as others. Go have a good time and support great causes with these three upcoming holiday events. Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees Benefitting: LeBonheur Children’s Hospital Location: Memphis Museum of Science and History (at the Pink Palace) Dates: November 20 – December 31 Remember the Enchanted Forest when it was a mainstay at the downtown Goldsmith’s decades ago? The tradition carries on at the Memphis Museum of Science and History at the Pink Palace. A section of the museum becomes a winter wonderland, and the mezzanine of the museum is decorated with beautifully decorated trees. At the end, Santa is waiting to hear your family’s Christmas wishes, and he’ll even pose for photos. Each tree is sponsored by area businesses or individuals, and proceeds benefit LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. The Memphis Museum of Science and History will also be featuring several holiday-themed movies, and their gift shop is a great way to avoid the department-store crowds.

Christmas Lights Extravaganza Benefitting: Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Memphis, Inc. Location: The display is located at 6571 Swarthmore Dr. in Memphis at the intersection of Swarthmore Dr. and Sulgrave Dr. Dates: November 28 – January 3 Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Memphis donor Caroline Winters got creative in her support of the organization. This year, she is using a brilliant holiday lights display in her front yard as a way to raise funds for one of her favorite charities. The best part is that this Christmas light drive-by event is COVID-safe and can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own car. This light display will be a sight to behold, featuring thirty-eight hand painted wooden cutouts of your favorite cartoon characters and more than 20,000 lights. This is a free event, but donations will be accepted and appreciated. Christmas Fiesta! Benefitting: Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group and Opera Memphis Location: Dixon Gallery and Gardens Date: December 18 from 11:00am to 3:00pm Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group and Opera Memphis have partnered to present a Christmas Fiesta at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. The community is invited to come enjoy the holiday traditions of Latin American and the Caribbean. You can learn all about the Puerto Rican music tradition of parrandas as well as other traditions involving posadas, piñatas, and more. Participants will also enjoy traditional Christmas music in Spanish. You can even make a poinsettia or a small piñata. And the best part? The Latin food! This event is great for the whole family.

Tropical Plants for Your Home By Rick Pudwell, Memphis Botanic Garden Director of Horticulture Like all trends in gardening, indoor plants have fallen in and out of favor at different times. This is something that I have a hard time understanding since I have had "houseplants" for as long as I can remember. I have always said plants don't naturally occur indoors, that is something that we impose on those particular plants. For a plant to live, much less thrive indoors, you must be able to meet the minimum requirements that particular species needs. Plants that will grow well indoors exclude most temperate climate species that need a winter rest. The majority of great indoor plants are understory plants from tropical jungles around the world. They are used to warm temperatures and filtered light that they receive under a canopy of trees. This group includes many species that the average gardener has seen many times. What is new and exciting is that there are many new cultivars of most species that are being developed and released almost constantly by plant breeders, making it possible for even an aging gardener like myself to be impressed by something new. One thing that our homes lack because of central air and heating is humidity. Plants originating in the tropics really need that to thrive. One way to solve this is grouping a number of plants in a large tray or saucer full of pebbles. Keep water in the tray but below the top of the pebbles so the pots don't stand in water. Evaporation will supply localized humidity. Of course, you can always mist plants with an atomiser bottle every morning (which I do) or install a room humidifier. Some popular groups of foliage plants that do well in the conditions I just described include Pothos, Monsteras, and Philodendrons; many new cultivars are available, both green and variegated. They come in a bewildering variety of forms that can climb, fill a hanging planter, or be a dramatic specimen in a large container. Ficus is another diverse group. From trees like Ficus bejamani and Ficus lyrata, which in their native habitat are bigger than our local Oaks (you can keep these Ficus "room size" for about 30 years) to Ficus pumila, that is a creeping vine with leaves the size of a penny. Hoyas are mostly vines with thick leaves of many forms ---wide, narrow, heart-shaped, green, or variegated. They like to dry well between waterings and under really good conditions produce fragrant flowers. Dieffenbachia and Agleonema are plants with bold variegated foliage and cane-like stems. Dieffenbachia can reach a height of 8 to 10 feet over time; Aglaonemas are much shorter. Both are good choices except for one fact: if you eat the leaves or stems it can cause your tongue to swell (hence why it's known as dumb cane).

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2021

This plant is not a good choice if you have small children or inquisitive pets. Sansevieria, or mother-in-laws-tongue, used to be a muchmaligned indoor plant. These are resilient plants from South Africa and Madagascar. Collectors have made many species of these exotic beauties available from dwarf rosette forms to tall cylindrical-shaped leaves, as well as the typical flat-leaved forms. There is even one that resembles a baseball bat! The only thing these plants won't survive is overwatering. I give mine a good drink about once a month. Aspidistra, or Saloon plant, is another tough species that will tolerate indifferent watering. It was previously only available in a handsome broadleaf green form. There are now smaller leafed versions as well as various forms of variation including stripes and polka dots. These are just a smattering of available species. Blooming houseplants are another whole category. Many blooming plants that you purchase in flower shops and box stores such as Kalanchoes, Cyclamen, Poinsettias, and other seasonal plants are too difficult to grow indefinitely as a houseplant. Enjoy them while in bloom and then discard or give to a friend that has a greenhouse. All blooming plants require more light than foliage plants. If you do not have sufficient light from windows you can supplement with fluorescent or LED plant lights. Some species do well with artificial light as their only source. Here are a few blooming species that can perform well under home conditions. African Violets and Especias, while not African, are available in a bewildering variety of colors and varieties. They can bloom almost year-round and are excellent candidates for growing under artificial light. Begonias are not just the typical bedding plants we are all accustomed to seeing outdoors. There are a vast array of species and varieties. Some of the angelwing or cane types can grow to 3 or 4 feet in height with many different leaf shapes and colors. There is also a vast array of rhizomatous begonias of which the "Rex" are most familiar but there are many others with names such as River Nile, Beef Steak, and Escargot! You could have a collection of 100 begonias with each one being a different variety. There is a whole world of plant species that you can grow in your home, including a large variety available during our Gifts of Green pop-up shop at the Memphis Botanic Garden happening from November 1-December 30. If you pick out something new to you, research the conditions it needs and do your best to accommodate your new charge, I am sure you will be rewarded for your efforts!

Broadway Is Back Orpheum Theatre After 576 days, Broadway is back at the corner of Main and Beale Street! The Orpheum Theatre opened back up with Come From Away, a heart-warming story that was the perfect show to start off the season. Neighboring restaurants celebrated too, including the Majestic Grille who rolled out the red carpet for opening night. The Broadway season continues with Disney’s The Lion King (Nov. 11-28) and smash-hit Hamilton (Dec. 21-Jan. 2). Check out orpheum-memphis.com for future fun! Photos submitted

Go Red for Women Luncheon American Heart Association Women gather for Go Red for Women luncheons across the country each year, (2020 was held virtually) and this year’s Mid-South event was held at the Graceland Soundstage on September 30. Each luncheon is a unique event led by local leaders to meet the needs of that community featuring inspiration, education and community among women. Guests enjoyed delicious heart-healthy food, learned new things at the Health Expo, and cheered on the survivor models in the fashion show....raising more than $330,000 for women’s heart health, the most in Mid-South history! Hard Hats with Heart American Heart Association According to the American Heart Association, one in 25 construction workers has cardiovascular disease, one in 25 has diabetes, one in four is obese, and one in four uses tobacco. In fact, construction industry workers have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to other industries, based on lifestyle factors such as smoking, nutrition, and physical activity levels. Hard Hats with Heart is the American Heart Association’s campaign to end heart disease and stroke and to increase wellness among those in the construction trades by providing resources, education and inspiration to help employees live a heart-healthier lifestyle. Led by 2021 Hard Hats with Heart Chair Andy Davis, Vice President and Business Manager of Turner Construction Company and AHA board member, the Mid-South’s first ever Hard Hats with Heart campaign raised more than $115,000 for the American Heart Association. River Arts Festival Poster Unveiling An event was held at L. Ross Gallery for the unveiling of two River Arts Festivals posters. Matthew Hasty was the artist chosen to create the poster for the 2020 festival, which was not held due to Covid. Rather than miss the opportunity, he was tapped to create a second poster for the 2021 festival. Thus two paintings and the posters upon which featured them were shown at the unveiling. Festival chair Bonnie Thorton and artistic director Chuck Mitchell made remarks and then unveiled the posters with the assistance of siblings James and Ava Wells. Photography by Ken Hall

Memphis Food & Wine Festival The Memphis Food & Wine Festival was back - bigger and better! Held October 16 at Radians Amphitheater, MFWF was a celebration of food, wine, and music. Guests enjoyed delicious tastings from local chef favorites along with acclaimed regional, national and international chefs while sipping exceptional wines from vintner selections. The community embraced the opportunity to once again attend the premiere festival, and box office sales were up 30% from the 2019 event. Memphis Food & Wine Festival is “culinary with a cause” and benefits FedExFamilyHouse, the home away from home for out-of-town families with children receiving treatment at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. A private party at the Hyatt Centric was held October 15 to begin the festivities. memphisfoodwinefestival.org. Photography by Steve Roberts

November & December

Art events We are hearing about the supply chain and how it will impact holiday shopping. But oh here is a gift that will not be hung up in any port: see this beautiful list below! Live theater, dance, music of all kinds, film screenings, and more. What a difference a year makes! Just in time for holidays we have some of our traditions back, live and in person. That will make me extra thankful at Thanksgiving, and I hope it brings you joy as well. Speaking of gifts and this schedule – how about giving your beloved friend or family member a pair of tickets to one of these shows? Or better still a pair of season tickets? The arts organizations will be grateful as will the recipient. At any rate dust off that sport jacket or cocktail dress and go enjoy! Be merry, happy, and blessed as we wind up 2021. -Ken Hall

to our offices on the upper floors of the Downtown store, and on occasion, I shared the elevator with Mr. Goldsmith. Even though the store was sold to Federated Department Stores in 1959, the Goldsmiths remained active in the business through the final consolidation with Rich’s in 1988. Store employees parked in the garage across Front Street, and entered via a tunnel into the store. I was delighted when I learned one of the locked, nondescript doors I passed each day was actually the entrance to the Enchanted Forest. A faint scent of cinnamon wafted through the door year round. The Enchanted Forest first opened in 1963, and this full page ad from the Commercial Appeal is from its debut year. Goldsmith’s Display Director George Hettinger created the exhibit, and based it on Walt Disney’s “It’s a Small World” exhibit at the New York World’s Fair. Barry Hartzog, Visual Merchandising Director, continued the meticulous maintenance and annual presentation of the display through the 1970s and 80s. I was two years old when the Enchanted Forest debuted; my first year as a copywriter was 1987, the last year it was held through the magical door in the Downtown tunnel.

Retail in Retrospect Goldsmith's Enchanted Forest By Sandi Butler Hughes If you grew up within 100 miles of Memphis, you probably grew up shopping at Goldsmith’s. It was an integral part of the Mid-South’s shopping history. You may have memories of buying a prom dress, picking out your china pattern, or working your first job at one of their six locations. I know I certainly do. As a copywriter in their in-house advertising department, I relished peeking behind the curtain that created the experience of shopping. I loved riding the ancient elevator

In 1990, Goldsmith’s donated the Enchanted Forest to TWIGS, an auxiliary group that supported Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. They combined the exhibit with the Festival of Trees exhibit, creating the Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees. In 1992, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman made a personal donation to the event while in Memphis filming “The Firm,” and new characters were added to the Enchanted Forest. Finally, in 1993 the iconic Downtown store closed. Thankfully, the tradition was revived and since 2002, the Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees has been held at the Museum of Science and History (the Pink Palace). For more information about dates and hours for the Enchanted Forest, please see “Building Momentum” on page 34. This is the first in a 4Memphis series entitled “Retail In Retrospect.” In each issue, I will feature historical local retailers from a bygone era, from a time when shopping locally was not only a movement, it was standard practice. Our mission statement at 4Memphis is to “Seek the Peace and Prosperity of Memphis,” and one of the primary ways we accomplish this is to support our locally-owned small businesses. This column will be fond reminisces of local purveyors from department stores to specialty boutiques, Downtown to Germantown. Memphis style matriarch, Babbie Lovett will offer her perspective as a fashion consultant, shop owner, and participant in the Commercial Appeal’s Memphis Fashion Week in the 1960s. Be sure to come back with each issue to see where we’re “shopping”, and share your shopping stories with us on Facebook, Instagram, or via email at Sandi@4Memphis.com. A special thanks to the Special Collections Department, University Libraries, University of Memphis, Memphis Public Libraries, and MoSH.

Amidst the pandemic, Cyrena experienced a lot of growth as she landed back in Memphis, went through personal life changes, and turned 30. When asked how she feels about turning 30, she says she is very excited about this decade. “I’m definitely an old soul, I should have been 30 a long time ago. It’s an energy that suits me. At 30, I feel more electric and more confident than ever, and I know what I want and don’t want.” Cyrena has a perspective on making music postCovid. “Music is medicinal. Our artists help us navigate our internal worlds and remind us what it’s like to feel alive. We need to fill up on that right now because we’ve been without it for a year and a half. For me, music is very healing,” Cyrena adds.

By Lesley Harris Colvett It’s no doubt that Cyrena Wages is a natural as a 4Memphis fashion model (page 64), but her heart and soul belong to music and her songs. Cyrena, who was born and raised in Millington, TN, recorded her song “River Bends” in 2019 while living in Nashville, but she felt a calling to come back to Memphis, and she made her move back home right before the pandemic. “River Bends” is about “reconnecting to the source,” and Cyrena released this song independently in 2020. “I felt a calling to come back to Memphis. I am so much more inspired being in this city. It’s weighty and soulful, and it feels like how I want my music to sound. Being here feels really right,” Cyrena says. You may recognize Cyrena as Miss Memphis 2009 and 2012...and Miss Tennessee first runner up, but that is certainly not what defines her. “I have always felt a bit misunderstood when associated with the whole pageantry scene. I am very grateful for that honor and for the wonderful folks I met through that experience, but that scene is not the person that I am. This record I’m working on is much more indicative of who I am." "Music, mental health, my stories, what goes on inside my head and my heart and how I express that in my songwriting is a whole lot more aligned for me than putting on a swimsuit and walking around on a stage,” Cyrena says. Cyrena has been singing her whole life - since she was a little girl - took voice lessons and music training, but she says she has evolved and gotten better over this last year, and now it is her time to trust all the work and training and leave it at the door, become untethered, and do it her way. And just this past year, Cyrena began working with Joe Restivo, her guitar player and musical director, and they wrote a full record which is currently being produced by Memphian Matt Ross-Spang ( Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John Prine, Elvis Presley). 62

Cyrena loves the life she is building here in Memphis. “I am very passionate about working with other sharp minds in this town to create industry here for artists. We have so much music history and legacy in Memphis, but we don’t have the industry we need. If we start small and curate opportunities to support original work, up-and-coming songwriters, producers and even filmmakers and beyond, then we will be inching towards the infrastructure required to revitalize a modern music industry in Memphis. My circle here has become a community of creative people of all ages and ambitions and it fires me up everyday to walk around my neighborhood Downtown and dream up the possibilities.” Although Cyrena has no desire to be a professional model, she certainly shines in front of the camera. “I had an absolute blast at the photo shoot. McKendree is so talented, calm and such a beautiful soul. The whole team, Matt and Jonathan were so wonderful. It was very cool, I hadn’t done anything like that in a really long time.” Treat yourself and go see Cyrena in November. She continues her residency upstairs at Earnestine and Hazel’s in “Nate’s Bar” November 4, 18, and 24. “I think that Earnestine’s is the coolest bar in the country, and Nate is a legend. I wanted to recreate the energy of a very intimate, loungy, sultry small club back in the day,” Cyrena says. You can also catch her November 11 at the Halloran Centre Songwriter’s Series, and November 12 at the 4Memphis Music Launch Party. Follow her on Instagram: @cyrenawages, or check www.cyrenawages.com for upcoming performance dates.

T

he Memphian, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is the latest addition to Overton Square, and the gorgeous site for our 4Memphis holiday fashion shoot. As a matter of fact, it was shot entirely on the 7th - and top - floor. It is a visual extravaganza beginning the moment you step off the elevator with antelope print carpet, oversized green leather wingback chairs, and black-and-white jungle themed wallpaper. The corner Junior Suite is stunning, complete with a balcony overlooking Cooper Street. But the Tiger and Peacock bar is the crowning jewel atop this dazzling hotel. The colors are sumptuous, and every nook has something beautiful to absorb. The spacious rooftop patio overlooks the hustleand-bustle of the Square, and like Overton Square below, this is a destination lounge dedicated to celebrating the best of the Memphis way of life – the art, music, culture, and always soul. Tiger and Peacock is currently open WednesdaySaturday for cocktails and dinner. Be sure to make a reservation and dress to impress! 66
