Divorce is a bad choice, but it may be the best choice.

The more you know about divorce, the better decisions you will make about divorce.

More than thirty years ago, this philosophy led us to write our client guide to divorce. It was updated again this year and can be accessed on our website, aboutdivorce.com. Divorce is a tragedy. It is the end of a relationship that the parties intended to last a lifetime. That tragedy is compounded when a party comes to the process with inaccurate information. A small amount of time spent reading the relevant portions of the guide can save a lot of time, anger and money. Whole books are written on some of the topics we treat with a few paragraphs. Our hope is that neither you, nor anyone close to you, will need this information. The reality is that you probably know someone who needs this information so they can make a choice that is best for them. Larry Rice

Persons of Interest "The Lord is good to all who have compassion on all he has made." Psalm 145:9

W

ith all that has gone on this past year as well as the city’s complete shut down for a full week thanks to the snow event of 2021, I do not think anyone would disagree with the statement that we have all become binge watchers to entertain ourselves. Most of my friends laugh that they are in bed by 8:00 and asleep before 10:00. I recently started watching a CBS production that aired for 5 seasons from 2011 to 2016 called “Person of Interest.” The show is based around an ex-CIA agent and a wealthy programmer who save lives by receiving information for government surveillance program designed to preventive terrorism. The programmer who designed the AI built in a backdoor to receive information of threats to normal citizens that calls our heroes to intervene in the lives of their fellow citizens before calamity happens. Our programmer partnered with John Reese, an ex-CIA agent, to work together in secret to prevent violent crimes before they can happen. The show’s main theme is built on the thesis that if you change a circumstance around a person’s situation, you will change the direction of a person’s life. If you interview any successful person, or for that matter a greatly troubled person, they will tell you the story of a person or small group of people that had a big impact on their life. It may be their parents, a teacher, first boss or childhood friend, but it is the individuals around them in their vulnerable years that help set the direction of who they have become. The promise of Psalms 145 verse 9 is a promise from the Lord to bless all those who have a positive effect on those God brings in each of our lives. I am finishing this letter up on an airplane as I fly home from Phoenix. I flew to Phoenix to play golf and spend time with a good friend celebrating his birthday. To be truthful, we had talked about me coming to play golf in January, once I had been vaccinated making it safe to 18

travel, but when Memphis hit 1 degree, I called to make sure he would be home, and I flew to Phoenix. The first night there, Rob and I had to go to dinner by ourselves because his wife Lisa called and said she would not be home in time to make the dinner reservation. Rob and Lisa had spent the day buying thousands of dollars of plumbing parts at Home Depot and Lowes to ship to their neighbors. They have a home in a small town in Texas and all their neighbors were without water because of the deep freeze that hit the South the week of February 15th causing frozen and broken water lines across Texas. Lisa had gone to FedEx to ship the parts to a friend who was a plumber in Texas who was triaging the repairs but did not have the elbows and couplings to fix the broken pipes. Rob and Lisa had no way of preventing the broken pipes that would affect their neighbors because of the deep freeze, but they did have the ability to go shopping in a city that was not affected by the deep freeze and send the desperately needed plumbing supplies to neighbors and total strangers, so they had the tools to fix the problems they were facing. It is fun to think about what we would do if we had the power to prevent difficult things from happening to friends and strangers alike, the 9th verse of the 145 Psalms gives us the power to change the future of our fellow Memphians by having compassion and loving those we interact with daily. Unlike the AI program in “Person of Interest'' we cannot see the threats our fellow citizens face in their day-to-day struggle to live, but we can do as Rob and Lisa did to pitch in to help those in need, when God has put in our power to help your neighbor. The City of Memphis is full of people and organizations that are working hard to make a difference in the lives of their fellow citizens that are struggling, the question we all must ask ourselves, how I am serving God by having compassion on my fellow citizens? Seek the peace and prosperity of Memphis. Jim Walker

Building Momentum: Momentum Nonprofit Partners By Kevin Dean

Mission: Momentum Nonprofit Partners builds the momentum of the nonprofit sector to create equitable, measurable, and lasting change. Year founded: 1992, previously called The Grant Center and Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence Website: www.momentumnonprofitpartners.org Number of organizations served: 569 nonprofits in 10 Mid-South counties Annual budget: $1,300,000

4

Memphis magazine has partnered with Momentum Nonprofit Partners to highlight exceptional nonprofits around the Mid-South that are serving as models for innovation, efficiency, collaboration, and impact. Before we highlight other organizations, we decided to first highlight Momentum Nonprofit Partners itself. If you haven’t heard of Momentum Nonprofit Partners yet, there is one major reason: Its limited public awareness doesn’t indicate impact; rather, the lowered profile is strategic. Their work to lift up the sector will always remain in the background, focusing its time on lifting up the nonprofits in the area and supporting them through various services and resources. In essence, Momentum Nonprofit Partners is the nonprofit resource center for the Mid-South, enabling nonprofits to better accomplish their missions by connecting nonprofits to resources, each other, and decision-making forums. The COVID-19 crisis required Momentum Nonprofit Partners to shift its business model, moving from a permanent location to an online world of Zoom meetings, virtual conferences, and online learning opportunities. To support nonprofits during the bleak financial crisis caused by the pandemic that resulted in an immediate loss of $32 million to area nonprofits, Momentum eliminated all costs associated with their trainings, allowing all nonprofit staff in the region to attend any of their 100+ trainings for free, saving nonprofits more than $154,000 in fees. Momentum also worked with the Community Foundation to establish the MidSouth COVID-19 Regional Response Fund, which will distribute more than $13,000,000 in relief funds to struggling nonprofits by the end of 2021. To ensure organizations are able to provide affordable benefits, Momentum began offering affordable health insurance with a new partnership with Mid-South Insurance Group, and they now offer subsidized life insurance plans through Mutual of America. Momentum advised its members on the convoluted PPP loan application process, helping nonprofits receive $36 million dollars in additional PPP funds that they

otherwise would not have received. Finally, when Momentum heard about nonprofits’ urgent need for face masks and other PPE equipment early in the pandemic, they were able to partner with the Shelby County Department of Community Services to provide monthly allocations of PPE to local nonprofits. As of today, more than two million pieces of PPE equipment have been provided to area nonprofits and their clients. That’s not all! The biggest wins for the organization have come from their public policy and advocacy efforts, which began in earnest in 2020. Thanks to Momentum’s statewide advocacy, Governor Bill Lee established the Nonprofit Subcommittee of the Economic Recovery Group, which provided recommendations to the Governor’s office on the needs of the nonprofit sector in Tennessee. And because of the committee’s recommendations, the State of Tennessee released $150 million dollars in leftover CARES Act funds to nonprofits across the state. Additionally, Momentum’s advocacy efforts led to an amendment to the Tennessee COVID-19 Recovery Act bill that included in the bill’s protections against unfounded lawsuits regarding workplace COVID-19 infections. Without Momentum, Tennessee nonprofits would have nearly $200 million less in relief funding. Though 2020 was a horrible year for the world, Momentum Nonprofit Partners has been able to grow in new and often surprising ways, centering itself as the information hub for the nonprofit sector and a provider of important resources to our most important community organizations. Whether it’s influencing legislation at the state level or providing one-on-one support sessions for frantic executive directors, the behind-the-scenes work of Momentum is now a critical and ever-evolving support structure for the nonprofits that are fighting the Mid-South’s largest challenges. They may be a small staff of seven, but their reach to more than 550 nonprofits has been essential in keeping the sector afloat in these uncertain times.

Good Apple: Tales of a Southern Evangelical in New York by Elizabeth Passarella

Hello, Numbers! What Can You Do? An Adventure Beyond Counting by Edmund Harriss and Houston Hughes Illustrated by Brian Rea Learning meets wonder when you invite numbers to come play in your imagination! Hello Numbers! What Can You Do? is not like any other counting book. As each "new One" appears on the scene, the numbers' antics hint at ever-deeper math. Young readers ages 3 to 6 will not only count along, but begin to wonder about symmetry, angles, shapes, and more. Written by the mathematician-and-poet team Edmund Harriss and Houston Hughes, and illustrated by long standing New York Times artist Brian Rea, this rollicking, rhyming book will take you to a whole new world of numbers.

In a Colorful Place by Dan Conaway & Otis Sanford Colorful Perspectives in Black and White. Dan Conaway and Otis Sanford share a city and an abiding interest in what makes it and all of us tick. Both are columnists for The Daily Memphian since its founding in 2018. A completely digital publication, the baby has already grown into the largest news organization in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Mid-South, and increasingly a model for the nation in meeting the evolving challenges of journalism. A lifelong Memphian, Conaway has had a decades-long career heading advertising agencies and creative boutiques, winning awards at every level, and keeping his insight into people and places – and his sense of humor – throughout. He's been writing columns for more than ten years that delight and enrage his readers but never bore them. This collaboration is his second book of collected columns. Sanford's distinguished career in journalism began at the high school paper in Panola County, Mississippi, traveled through newsrooms including Oxford, Jackson, Memphis, and Detroit as a reporter, feature writer, columnist and editor, in front of microphones and cameras as a regular commentator and political analyst, onto the pages of his books, and into the Hardin Chair of Excellence in Journalism and Strategic Media at the University of Memphis. His columns enlighten, entertain and stir his readers in a way that only honesty and informed opinion can. Both of them draw from a lifetime of experience, a practiced eye, a talent for storytelling, and the deep well of a city and a region brimming with those stories. Mr. Conaway and Mr. Sanford – do tell. 22

Elizabeth Passarella is content with being complicated. She grew up in Memphis in a conservative, Republican family with a Christian mom and a Jewish dad. Then she moved to New York, fell in love with the city--and, eventually, her husband--and changed. Sort of. While her politics have tilted to the left, she still puts her faith first-and argues that the two can go hand in hand, for what it's worth. In this sharp and slyly profound memoir, Elizabeth shares stories about everything from conceiving a baby in an unair-conditioned garage in Florida to finding a rat in her bedroom. She upends stereotypes about Southerners, New Yorkers, and Christians, making a case that we are all flawed humans simply doing our best. Good Apple is a hilarious, welcome celebration of the absurdity, chaos, and strange sacredness of life that brings us all together, whether we have city lights or starry skies in our eyes. More importantly, it's about the God who pursues each of us, no matter our own inconsistencies or failures, and shows us the way back home.

Relentless (Gray Man #10) by Mark Greaney The Gray Man's search for missing intelligence agents plunges him deep into a maelstrom of trouble in the latest entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series. The first agent disappearance was a puzzle. The second was a mystery. The third was a conspiracy. Intelligence operatives around the world are disappearing. When a missing American agent re-appears in Venezuela, Court Gentry, the Gray Man, is dispatched to bring him in, but a team of assassins has other ideas. Court escapes with his life and a vital piece of intelligence. Meanwhile, CIA agent Zoya Zakharova is in Berlin. Her mission: to infiltrate a private intelligence firm with some alarming connections. The closer she gets to answers, the less likely she is to get out alive. Court and Zoya are just two pieces on this international chessboard, and they're about to discover one undeniable truth-sometimes capturing a king requires sacrificing some pawns.

Jody Stephens' Virtual Concert benefiting church health and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Jody Stephens, an original member of legendary band Big Star, organized an all-star virtual concert on January 24th to benefit Church Health and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A longtime producer at Ardent, Stephens has made musical friends around the world over the decades and using a platform devised by entertainment streaming company In.Live, he was able to bring together musicians from a variety of locations in the US, France, and Canada. Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies became members of a reconstituted Big Star some years ago and were eager to participate. Memphian Keith Sykes, a long-time member of Jimmy Buffet’s band, appeared with a solo performance. Stephens and Luther Russell who compose the duo Those Pretty Wrongs performed. Additionally on the roster were solo artists Skylar Gudasz and Sarabeth Tucek, Pat Sansone of Wilco, Audley Free of Sheryl Crow’s band, Gary Louis of the Jayhawks, Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, Rich Tupica of There Was A Light, and Sadler Vaiden who plays with Jason Isbell. Following the performances, there was a panel discussion which included writers Bob Mehr and Justin Gage. The VIP tickets for the concert allowed ticket holders to pose a question on the stream. Viewers from the United Kingdom to America’s West Coast commented on the stream chat panel about the innovative quality of the concert and the sheer love of the music and musicians participating. Recipes Take Center Stage: Friends of the Orpheum Cookbook By Sandi Butler Hughes Photography by Kristin Bennett, Orpheum Theatre Group

W

hen attending a show at the Orpheum, the ushers who greet you are dedicated volunteers and members of a group known as “Friends of the Orpheum” (FOTO). For decades the group has served as ushers and ticket takers for every Broadway show, concert, ballet, and other events. These men and women have not only been gracious hosts to those attending the shows, they are also behind-the-scenes-hosts to the cast and crew of the touring Broadway productions. On Sunday afternoon for each Broadway production, between the matinee and final performance, FOTO serves a home-cooked Usher Dinner for up to 150 people in the tour. For the actors and stage hands, it is a welcomed and wildly popular expression of Southern hospitality. As Jose Solivan, Company Manager for The Play That Goes Wrong, (and one of the last Broadway shows at the Orpheum in 2020) explains, “I’ve toured now for many years, with almost 20 tours, and there are certain cities you always look forward to…Memphis is one of those cities. The city, the food, Graceland, the Civil Rights Museum, the beautiful folks at the Orpheum AND THE USHER DINNER! Every member of the company looks forward to this generous dinner...the collard greens were perfection….the cornbread casserole…and the BANANA PUDDING! I can’t wait to return!” On their 40th anniversary in 2017, FOTO was awarded The Star of Touring Broadway Award. The award was presented by The Broadway League, the producers of the Tony Awards, and according to the League’s website, was awarded in large part to the Usher Dinner: “For over 25 years, FOTO members have prepared a home cooked meal for every Broadway show that has come through the Orpheum, feeding upwards of 18,000 total cast and crew members in that time. The group helps shape memories for the over 250,000 people that pass through the Orpheum and perform on its stages year after year.” Recently, FOTO released a cookbook, The Cast Party: A Collection of Recipes by the Friends of the Orpheum. It is filled with many of the recipes served at the Usher Dinners, anecdotes from the casts and crews, and is another expression of the commitment of the FOTO members. “Through the dedication of the FOTO cookbook committee and the many members that make up this incredible volunteer organization, this cookbook represents the 25-plus years of our FOTO tradition in providing a home-cooked meal for the Broadway touring companies,” said Elena Ross, Chair of the FOTO cookbook committee. “It is a welcome addition to any family because it not only satiates the appetite but fills up the heart as well.”

hen David proposed on New Year’s Eve 2019 W he asked two questions—“Will you marry me?” and “Is New Year’s Eve at the Pink Palace okay,

because I already booked it!” I’m always grateful for his thoughtfulness and attention to detail, but planning a wedding in 2020 made me realize just how lucky I am to have him by my side. In December, the COVID-19 case count was spiking in Shelby County and we realized we couldn’t have the celebration we wanted while keeping all our friends and family healthy. So we opted for a mini-mony in my parents’ East Memphis home and then celebrated with a large reception like we had originally planned on our first anniversary—New Year’s Eve 2021 at the Pink Palace Museum. Before I walked down the aisle, my mother-in-law lent me a handkerchief as my “something borrowed” that was David’s great, great grandmother’s. Every bride in his family for three generations had carried it down the aisle on their wedding day. About 25 of our family and friends gathered as I walked down the hallway, lined with photos of family members who couldn’t be there as Auld Lang Syne played until I met David by the Christmas tree to say our vows. To ensure the safety of our guests, everyone in attendance tested negative the week before and wore our individually wrapped face masks, personalized with Ring in the Ridenhours! We rented a tent with heaters and bistro tables to increase space, and many of our guests enjoyed their pre-made dinner plates provided by the Bar-B-Q Shop on the patio outside. Although it wasn’t what we planned, I’m so grateful these photos captured the real-life moments of a 2020 wedding. We served Bar-B-Q shop on plasticware, spiked eggnog in crystal punch bowls, and individually wrapped Gibson’s donuts on silver platters. The misplaced steamer for my dress, a spare roll of toilet paper hiding on a dresser, and my niece’s green glittery bow are all just as special as the perfectly posed flowers and cake. And most importantly, we closed the books on 2020 and rang in 2021 as husband and wife. -Libby Perry Ridenhour

hese wedding bells were brought to you by T Lindsey’s bridesmaid Raegan Cook! Joe and Raegan attended Christian Brothers University

together, and Lindsey and Raegan's friendship started while fostering for the same dog rescue in 2015. Raegan gave destiny a nudge in 2018 and introduced Joe to Lindsey. Their first date was Pad Thai the next day, and the rest is history! Lindsey’s brother Gregory walked her down the aisle at Independent Presbyterian, the church they attended with their mother Jody and late father Scott. A dazzling reception followed at the Atrium in the heart of Overton Square. Joe and Lindsey’s affinity for cooking shone through the CFY catering menu, complete with a grilled cheese station (a Driver family favorite)! Guests danced the night away six feet apart to the Soul Shockers, and the Pagni family’s Louisiana roots were celebrated with Mardi Gras beads for all. Lindsey and Joe said farewell under the lights on Madison Avenue, and they lived happily ever after!

Plant, Grow, Bloom: The Perfect Container

From the front porch of a house to the balcony of a high-rise condo, container gardening is both rewarding, easy, and beautiful. What can you do to make your containers even better? Buy the plants at the upcoming Memphis Botanic Garden annual plant sale! The Spring Plant Sale will be held at the Garden over two weekends, April 8-10 and April 12-15. 4Memphis gives a special thank you to Rick Pudwell, Jill Mabry, and Olivia Wall of Memphis Botanic Garden for sharing photos and expertise.

How to plant the perfect container: 1. Select plants for compatibility - sun plants with sun plants or shade with shade. Also make sure their water requirements are similar. The plants featured in the photo below can all take full sun and in hot weather would require a thorough watering once a day. 2. Make your container interesting by selecting plants with contrasting textures and colors. 3. Plant the plants at the same depth that they were growing in their original containers. 4. Use a quality soil mix (also available for sale at the Spring Plant Sale). 5. It is important to regularly groom plants in the container - remove discolored foliage and faded blooms to keep them looking and growing great.

March & April Art events

Hidden Springs by Gay Johnston at Gallery Ten Ninety-One

Whether we have a basketball tournament or not, March might yet have a feel of madness as we are all deeply stricken with cabin fever and ready to get out! Happily, there are some fine virtual events AND several things you can go to (as in get dressed, hop in your car, and travel to). The Dixon and Brooks are doing a fine job at getting people in safely. Our commercial galleries, too, are fine to visit. The Memphis Symphony has one of Robert Moody’s fantastic “orchestra unplugged” concerts plus a couple of regular concerts. Iris Orchestra and Playhouse on the Square are offering live performances streamed online. Again, our arts community is proving it is innovative, resourceful, and resilient. Please avail yourself of this blessing and please support them. -Ken Hall

The Donut Man By Don DeWeese with Steve Williford Gibson's Donuts is a Memphis institution. The magic is part delicious donut and part Don DeWeese, owner of Gibson's. He bought the shop in 1996, and it was a perfect fit for the gregarious Donut Man. He loves people whether they are school kids or celebrities. He enjoys talking to them all, and Gibson's provides a steady stream of donut fans and friends. The Donut Man is a compilation of years of Don's stories and remembrances from Gibson's and beyond. It is also a celebration of what is good in Memphis and in life as seen through the eyes of "DD." Alton Brown of The Food Network is featured in the book, and he says it best, "In Memphis is this donut place called Gibson's, which makes not just the best donut in the United States, but, as far as I'm concerned, if all the other donuts went away, and I still had Gibson's, I'd be okay." The Donut Man - and the best donut - is available exclusively at Gibson's.

SPRING

2021 Trends New Season + New Looks + New Places The Hen House Wine Bar, one of the coolest and newest establishments in East Memphis is like walking into a fashion magazine. The pops of colors, luscious fabrics, and gorgeous accessories envelop your senses. This provided the perfect setting for our early Spring fashion shoot. Owner Michaela Dockery comes from a big family, she’s the oldest of eight kids. She says food, wine and togetherness has always happened over the table, and she loves to host friends and family! “I love to cook, make drinks, and pour wine. It’s what brings us together,” Michaela says. The Hen House was inspired by Michaela’s love for entertaining as well as her travels with her husband Dr. Dee Dockery. “Every time we came home, we would say we wished we had a place that was upscale but relaxed, somewhere that you could go before or after your date. Why can’t we do what other large cities are doing?” So after talking about it for years, Michaela and Dee opened The Hen House Wine Bar unofficially on Michaela’s birthday, December 19th, 2020. “When people come in, I want them to sit on couches, or at a table, or just their favorite spot where they always like to sit...and have birthdays, special occasions here. We want it to feel homey,” Michaela says. And very fashionable.
