KEEP IT LOCAL Proverbs 5:15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. This month starts the all-important holiday season, the time of year that will also determine success or failure economically for our local charities and retailers. The Friday after Thanksgiving is historically known as Black Friday because it’s the day that retailers start to make money for the year. Imagine owning a store, going to work every day, paying
is a waterproof receptacle for holding water. Cisterns are distinguished from inground wells by their man-made waterproof linings and are often built on rooftops to catch and store rainwater. They are commonly used in areas where water is scarce or where there are concerns of water quality. Cisterns are built just like relationships; they must be maintained or the water will be of little use - similar to a relationship becoming broken if it is not maintained. We in the city of Memphis are in a relationship with each other, and just like a cistern or a marriage, these relationships must be built and maintained for the good of all of us. The economic importance of building relationships
employees, taxes and expenses monthly, and not expecting to make a profit until the last two months of the year. Imagine running a charity that provides over 100 children a home, food, clothing, education and, most importantly, a loving environment...but, not knowing until the last two months of the year whether funds will be sufficient for you to care for those same children next year.
with each other by shopping at locally-owned businesses and supporting locally-focused charities may not seem as important to us as drinking clean water, but if our local business and charities aren’t successful, the city will become just as ill as if we had all been drinking contaminated water. Doing business with our local merchants and donating to our local charities brings life and prosperity to the MidSouth.
Imagine providing daily medical services for the working poor or daily meals to the homeless on our streets, and not knowing until the last two months of the year whether the funds will be sufficient for you to continue serving them in 2018.
The encouragement of peace and prosperity is the mission of 4Memphis and something we can all support by Keeping it Local this holiday season.

HEELS & HOOPS GALA
The University of Memphis women’s basketball Fastbreak Club hosted the eighth annual Heels & Hoops Gala. The Heels & Hoops Gala was created in 2010 by Gigi Wiertelak, Sandy Lenoir, and the late Barbara Bronze as a way to raise money for the Tigers women’s basketball program. In the eight years of existence, Heels & Hoops has raised over $300,000, and this evening alone raised over $90,000 in proceeds with more than 300 guests in attendance. The event featured live music by Donna Wolf, a special performance by the women’s basketball team, auctions, and dancing.

The holiday season beckons traditional decor and special moments with loved ones. Family heirlooms, traditional pieces, and special collections are some of the items that make the holiday season so special. Pulling it all together creates a beautiful setting. Our interior design experts share their sentiments for the season and advice on setting a memorable scene that your family and friends will cherish. RACHEL GRAY In any other circumstance, a teenager with a bottle of brandy and a box of matches is, undoubtedly, a recipe for disaster. But, consider that this situation happens once every year on Christmas Eve night. On this sacred occasion, and historically throughout my years and those of my forebears, we gather around the dining table to welcome the pièce de résistance of the meal… the plum pudding, or more commonly known as “figgy pudding.” As we wait with bated breath, the aforementioned teenager assumes the coveted role and liberates the pudding from the confines of its steaming mold, plates it on a glamorous platter, douses it with copious amounts liquor, and delivers it to the table en flambé with great pomp and circumstance.
Whether your holiday traditions are big or small, these traditions lend a certain magic and spirit to our everyday lives. Consider extracting certain elements from your holiday decorations or holiday traditions and incorporating them into your home interiors post holiday. Since I am the sucker in the family who actually goes to great lengths creating the plum pudding months in advance of December 24th, relatives would send me family pudding molds through the years. I normally don’t collect things, but somehow, these molds collected me, along with a set of pewter ice cream molds. Most of the pudding and ice cream forms are antique and works of art. So, instead of keeping these objects stowed away, I decided to display them on the bookshelves off of my dining room. The installation is impressive and eclectic…a wash of dusty, silvered objects in varying sizes that can be articulated on a whim. While the objects are old, the December 2017 / 33

WARNER MOORE I love getting out the Christmas boxes each year. Unpacking old friends that I have collected over the years. The time-honored tradition of Christmas is a joyful thing, and thinking of creative ways to display your Christmas collections can be exciting. If you have collected or inherited beautiful glass ornaments consider not placing some of them on the tree. Vintage glass ornaments have a certain luster that new ornaments do not. Instead of the tree, consider placing them in large clear glass containers and use them on your mantle, console or sideboard. One can also tie them to Christmas garland that hangs over doors, mirrors or mantles. Collections of things, Santa Clauses, Christmas villages, snowmen, etc. can be displayed in interesting ways. The top of a console can be turned into a winter wonderland! Lay green sheet moss first. Then place the pieces to look like an outdoor scene. Once displayed sprinkle faux snow over the entire village. You can also use your collection to adorn the dining room table center piece. The collection will create a permanent center piece throughout the season to be embellished with fresh flowers as needed. Use greenery as a base and build on top of that.

Hanging vintage ornaments on your tree will give it a wonderful look of studied grace and longevity. A truly traditional look. If you don’t have vintage ornaments they are easily acquired on EBay. Even a vintage tree topper will set a nostalgic mood. Another way to use a collection is on the mantle. Placed in and around Christmas garland draped across the mantle gives it an important place to shine.
Nutcrackers are among the most popular collectibles. Massing them on a table or by the fireplace is distinctive but there are other ways to use them. Try tying them to your tree, if it is large! Fishing line is the perfect medium with which to secure them. One can also place them in small groupings throughout the house. All collections should be enhanced with greenery and, or flowers to give them an attractive foundation. Christmas is a magical time of year. Feel free to experiment. There is no way to go over the top at Christmas! May you have a joyful and merry Christmas! CINDY MCCORD: For those of you who know me best, it comes as no surprise that there is a fascination and love for the place we call “HOME”. For me personally, I love to walk in a room and let it tell a story. Don’t get me wrong, I thrive on new beautiful things, BUT balancing it with personal and meaningful collections, gifts from family and friends, and passed down items from generations make a perfect and special home. When I look back at items given to me over the years such as ornaments, snowmen for my collection, and other pieces, it’s not the gift or occasion I remember the most but the conversation and sweet memory of the person who gave me the gift. It’s nice to be able to walk in a room and reconstruct the moment and relive it! I want my home to be a place of comfort and provide memories that reflect strength and character, which made me who I am. My precious mother has passed many beautiful silver, crystal, china, and linens down to me, and just last Christmas we sat for hours and looked at each piece and she told me the story of “who it was from” and how they were related to me. I wrote all of it down and plan to do the same one day for my twin girls. These are memories that I carefully guard and deeply cherish.

“Grand” is a word certainly befitting Memphis’ Grand Carousel. For decades it was housed at the Mid-South Fairgrounds, served as the centerpiece of Libertyland amusement park, and was a glorious piece of art and history. Then, for several years it was stored away, waiting for its next grand appearance. On December 2nd, another generation of Memphians will delight in riding the completely restored grande dame as the Grand Carousel Pavilion and Ballroom opens at the Children’s Museum of Memphis. The Carousel was built in 1909 by Gustav Dentzel, and was originally installed at Forest Park Amusement Park in Chicago. Since 1923, it had been a part of the Mid-South Fairgrounds and then moved 60 feet to Libertyland. When Libertyland closed in 2005 and other assets were sold, the carousel was saved. In 2009, it was moved out of the elements and put into storage at the Mid-South Coliseum. “The museum has spent the last three years restoring and preserving one of Memphis’ finest treasures,” said Randy McKeel, CMOM Chief Financial Officer. “The Memphis Grand Carousel is a city icon for all our children to enjoy. The museum’s board and staff are happy to give this gift back to the community. Memphis can be proud it has one of the rarest, most precious Dentzel carousels left in operation. It’s now back and ready for new and magical memories!” The Grand Carousel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Only 24 of the magnificent Dentzel carousels are still in operation today. Weather and time took their toll, as well as the high value of each hand-carved figures encouraged owners to break apart the carousels and sell the pieces to collectors. But our Memphis Dentzel original is even more prized because it is one of only four or five all-horse Dentzel carousels still in existence today. The Grand Carousel features 32 “jumpers,” 16 “standers,” and two chariots. The horses saddles are exquisitely carved, and the decorative designs are often the entire length of the horses’ bodies. All moveable parts original to the Carousel were also restored, and 1,350 lights illuminate the carvings. While the two original chariots have both been restored, it is very important that everyone has an opportunity to experience a ride on the
Grand Carousel, so an ADA-compliant chariot has been substituted for one of the originals. It too is hand-carved and a replica of the original, but allows wheelchair access. The original chariot, not being reinstalled, will also be housed in the Pavilion as a photo opportunity. The Children’s Museum was an ideal location for the relic, and in 2014, Jimmy Rout III led the charge for restoration. For the past two years, the Carousel has been in Marion, Ohio, getting a complete refurbishing at a cost of $1 million. While the restoration of the Carousel was the catalyst, it was only one component of the project. The 100+ year-old ride needed to be housed in a climate controlled space to protect and preserve the investment, and in 2016 construction began on the Grand Carousel Pavilion and Ballroom. The $4.5 million, 20,000 square foot building is adjacent to the CMOM facility, and is a beautiful space for weddings and parties, as well as enjoying the Carousel. Much of the funding has been from generous donations from FedEx, the Plough Foundation, the Nineteenth Century Club, and over 50 other individuals, making this project a reality. Chances are very good, if you grew up in the Bluff City you once rode atop one of the opulent horses. Now, thanks to the efforts of the Children’s Museum of Memphis and other visionaries and supporters, you can revisit this childhood treasure and take a spin on Memphis’ Grand Carousel. For only $3, you can ride the Grand Carousel, and is independent of a visit to CMOM. Rides are free with a CMOM membership and also to school groups. The Grand Carousel and the Children’s Museum is open daily, 9am-5pm.

Lamb with Mint Sauce and Twice Baked Potatoes
AUSTRALIAN LAMB RACK Season Lamb with salt and pepper. Grill to desired temperature MINT SAUCE: In a saucepan, combine 12 ounces fresh mint (pick leaves off stem), 4 cups of sugar and 12 cups of water. Bring to a boil then turn down and let simmer for 30 minutes. Strain out leaves then whisk in ¼ cup of apple pectin. Let cool. TWICE BAKED POTATOES Coat 4 potatoes with olive oil and salt and wrap in foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Let potatoes cool. Cut ends off potato and cut remaining potato in half. Scoop contents out while leaving enough around the sides for structural purposes. FILLING FOR POTATO: Peel 4 potatoes and boil until soft. Strain and add salt to taste, ¼ pound of melted butter and 1 cup of heavy cream. Mash and put into piping bag with pastry tip. Pipe into potato shell and brown in oven at 350 degrees until golden brown

Sweet Potato Cheesecake 1 pound cream cheese 5 ounces sugar 2 1/2 ounces butter 1 1/4 ounces flour Pinch of salt vanilla to taste 4 egg yolks
6 ounces heavy cream 8 ounces sweet potato pie mix 8 ounces hazelnuts, toasted and chopped 2 graham cracker crusts
Place the cream cheese, sugar and butter in a mixing bowl and paddle until creamy; add the egg yolks one at the time. Alternate the flour with the heavy cream to the mixing bowl until all is well incorporated; next add the salt and vanilla. Separate the mix into equal portions. Use one half of the divided mixture between the 2 crusts. Incorporate the other half mix with the sweet potato pie mix and chopped hazelnuts; mix with a rubber spatula until well incorporated. Pour this mix onto the other cheesecake mix without mixing (this will give you the different layers). Bake in a water bath for 40-50 minutes at 300 degrees (depends on the oven) or until the cheesecake does not shake anymore. Allow to rest for approximately 1 hour then place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Basic Deviled Egg Recipe 6 large eggs 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise 1 tablespoon chopped caper or pickle relish
1 teaspoon yellow mustard 1/8 teaspoon salt dash black pepper dash tabasco
Place eggs in a single layer in a saucepan; add water to depth of 3 inches. Bring to a boil; cover, remove from heat, and let stand 15 minutes. Drain immediately and fill the saucepan with cold water and ice. Tap each egg firmly on the counter until cracks form all over the shell. Peel under cold, running water. Slice eggs in half lengthwise, and carefully remove yolks. In food processor or by hand, mash yolks with mayonnaise. Add relish, mustard, salt, and pepper, and tabasco; stir well. Spoon yolk mixture into egg whites. Garnish, if desired. (Pictured: garnished with Caviar and Chive. “Cobb Salad” Egg: Follow the above recipe. In step 3 also add 1 avocado, crumbled blue cheese, and diced cucumber. Garnish with chopped bacon and cracked black pepper Lox and Bagel Egg: Follow the basic egg recipe. In step 3 add smoked salmon, cream cheese, and zest of 1 lemon. Garnish with black salt, poppy seed, and fried onion.

Amarena Cherry & Sage Pork Wellington with White Bean Cassoulet
1 pork loin, silverskin removed 1 ounce Amarena cherries, pureed 1 teaspoon fresh sage, chiffonade zest of one lemon 4 ounces wild mushroom, chopped and sautéed 3 ounces prosciutto dijon mustard 1 sheet puff pastry egg wash 4 ounces thick cut bacon, diced
1 onion, diced 1 carrot, diced 1 stalk celery, diced 2 cups great northern beans, soaked overnight 2 ounces butter 2 ounces flour 2 ounces demi glace 4 ounces burgundy 6 cups stock, your favorite
Season pork loin with salt, pepper, minced garlic, and chopped herbs and sear to rare. Butterfly and stuff with sage, cherry puree, and lemon zest. Roll into a tight roulade, and brush with dijon mustard. Arrange prosciutto in a single sheet large enough to wrap around the roulade, and spread a thin layer of mushroom duxelle. Place loin on top of mushroom mixture and roll prosciutto into a tight log. Chill at least 20 minutes. Generously coat puff pastry with egg wash and place pork roulade in the center. Roll pastry around the roulade and seal. Roast at 350 until desired degree of doneness is achieved, roughly 20 minutes. Render bacon over medium heat until crispy. Add veggies and sweat until translucent. Add beans, butter, and flour, and cook until a light roux is achieved. Deglaze with red wine and stock and cook until sauce thickens and beans are tender, roughly 1 hour. Season to taste.

“Killer” Chess Pie Lou Morrow’s Recipe
4 ounces unsalted butter 1 ¾ cup sugar 1 tablespoon cornmeal 1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 eggs 1 prepared pie crust
Cream butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat in. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into prepared pie crust and bake a 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes or until set.

1 beef tenderloin trimmed, about 12 to 16 ounces 1 sheet puff pastry 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups button mushrooms 2 shallots 1 sprig thyme
2 cloves garlic 1/4 cup dijon mustard 1 egg beaten salt and pepper to taste heavy duty plastic wrap
DUXELLE: In a food processor, combine mushrooms, shallots, garlic and thyme. Blend until it resembles a paste, season with salt and pepper. Set a saute pan over medium high heat. Once hot, add duxelle to the dry pan. Cook 4 to 6 minutes. This step will bring out the liquid from the mushrooms. Pour duxelle into a fine mesh strainer. You don’t want any liquid. Pour onto a baking sheet and set aside to cool. BEEF: Set a large saute pan over high heat. Once hot, add olive oil. Season beef generously. Sear the beef in the pan. Make sure all sides are seared. This will lock in all the juices! Transfer beef to a cutting board and brush with dijon mustard while it is still hot. Set aside to cool. ASSEMBLE: Pull a long piece of plastic wrap out of the roll, do not disconnect from roll. Lay puff pastry on top of plastic wrap. Top pastry with duxelle in an even layer. Lay beef on the puff pastry and duxelle. It should be centered but close to edge of pastry nearest you. Trim sides of pastry as needed. There should be about an inch extra on each side of the beef. Using the plastic wrap, begin to roll the beef away from you and toward the plastic roll. Keep plastic attached to the roll! As you slowly roll, the pastry will wrap around the beef. Once you have completed one full revolution, the pastry should meet pastry and overlap to completely encase the beef. Continue rolling. Once you reach the plastic roll, pull the wellington back toward you. Fold ends of pastry in, and continue rolling. Continue rolling, tighter with each revolution. Once wrapped tightly, cut plastic wrap and tightly twist ends. Set in fridge for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove plastic wrap transfer to a baking sheet. Brush with egg. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool 15 to 20 minutes before slicing.

1 ¼ sticks (5 ounces) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces 3 tablespoons cold water
FILLING 5 eggs 1 pound dark corn syrup 9 ounces sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ½ ounces unsalted butter, melted and cooled 4 fl ounces oatmeal stout beer 12 ounces pecan pieces
In a food processor, blend together the flour, sugar and salt. Sprinkle the butter on top of the flour and pulse until small pieces remain (about the size of peas). With the machine running, add in enough water to bring the dough together. Shape into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap and chill until firm, at least 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Set aside. Roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness on a lightly-floured work surface. Transfer the pie to your pie dish and fold, crimp, flute edges of the pie as desired. Return back to the refrigerator to chill while you make the filling. In a large bowl, beat the eggs well. Add in the corn syrup, sugar, vanilla, butter and beer. Fold in the pecan pieces and pour into the prepared pie crust. Transfer the pie to the prepared sheet pan and bake until almost set, 45-55 minutes. Allow it to cool completely before cutting. If using premade, frozen pie shells, this should be enough filling for 2 pies.

HOW WE MET: We first met at a campus church group at the University of Tennessee. Ben sat down beside me and introduced himself. We have been at each other’s side ever since. OUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: Our big day was like a fairy tale to us. It was a beautiful day full of love and sunshine. After a lovely traditional church ceremony we danced the night away at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Our plans for the honeymoon and pictures could not prepare us for the beauty of the Oregon Coast. We spent our days hiking trails along the coastline, eating wonderful seafood, and taking in the views. Everything came together perfectly, we could not have been any happier.

He went away to the Air Force Academy for Materials Chemistry, and I went to Union for nursing. Long distance for 4 years has been very challenging, but it taught us to communicate well and cherish the days we did have together. After asking my dad for his blessing over a Waffle House breakfast, he surprised me with a proposal on the rooftop of the Peabody Hotel as the sun sank over the Mississippi River on July 29th. We can’t wait to tie the knot and go wherever the Air Force sends us!

Another memorable moment was the Girl Scout Cookies wedding favors. Our guests were pleasantly surprised to receive a box of Girl Scout cookies in October.

RED TUB DAY Making Christmas Bright Photos courtesy of Memphis Family Connection Center It often seems we ask “how can we help this time of year?” or “how can we make a difference?”. The Red Tub Day is an ideal way to help a child this holiday season. The Red Tub Day is sponsored by Memphis Family Connection Center (MFCC), an organization providing connectionbased, trauma-informed care to the foster, adoptive and special needs community. In 2010, the MFCC asked the Shelby County Tennessee Department of Children Services: “What can we do for you?” They said, “We have nearly 30 kids who need Christmas.” That is when the MFCC sprang into action, gathered up 30 red Sterilite tubs, asked people to pitch in, and “Red Tub Day” was born to make the holiday special for children in need. Mark Ottinger serves as a Campus Pastor at Fellowship Memphis and is founder of the Memphis Family Connection Center, where he serves as the Executive Director. “From Red Tub Day, and the fact I’m an adoptive dad of six, my heart grew to figure out how to engage the adoptive/foster care community on a much deeper level. The question I kept asking was ‘how can we best serve this community year round?’. So two years ago, I launched the Memphis Family Connection Center.” “We have been overwhelmed with how a simple idea seven years ago - to fill red tubs with Christmas presents for 28 children in foster care - has now grown into Red Tub Day. This year, over 500 children in foster care will receive Christmas. I️ am so grateful for the businesses, schools and churches that have partnered with us!” Mark said. Last year through individuals, churches and businesses, the MFCC provided over 500 Red Tubs for children at risk
and in foster care. In partnership with Red Tub Day, White Station Church of Christ hosted a special day where the children received their own specific Red Tub. The special day included a party with face painting, crafts, games, basketball, a petting zoo, pizza, sleigh rides, and a visit and pictures with Santa. You can make a difference this holiday season - fill a Red Tub for a child! Donate gifts equivalent to $125 or offer a donation of $125 to the Memphis Family Connection Center. This donation allows MFCC to provide care for foster and adoptive families in Shelby County. It’s a great opportunity for friends, co-workers or multiple families to partner together to make the holiday extra special and help the community. “Red Tub Day is so much bigger than a Christmas party. It is a day where children that have experienced such difficulty, for a few hours experience laughter and joy,” Mark said. “And the financial donations help bring real hope year round through the Memphis Family Connection Center and how they serve adoptive/foster children and families.” Visit redtubday.com for details. For the third year, the American Cancer Society selected 27 prominent men to participate in Real Men Wear Pink, a fundraising campaign to support the Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative. mix&mingle 2017 VOX AWARDS The Memphis Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America presented its 2017 VOX Awards October 19 at Sara’s Place at the Memphis Botanic Garden. The annual event recognizes the best in PR campaigns and tactics conceived, developed and implemented by the Mid-South’s most-talented communications professionals during the past year. VOX chair was Peggy Reisser from UT Health Science Center, co-chair was David Brown, from KQ Communications. The emcee for the evening was WREG-TV anchor/reporter April Thompson. Two Star awards were presented to professionals representing the highest standard of excellence at different stages in their careers. Beth Wilson received the PR Executive of the Year, and the Rising Star was presented to Jennifer L. Sharp. The Memphis PRSA chapter is celebrating its 65th anniversary.

Confidence: Fashion Forward
Of all sections of Memphis Impact, the “impact” of the fashion section is the most obscure. There is a definite purpose to the philanthropy section and even the sport’s section, but it is more difficult to point out why fashion is important. It’s not difficult to understand why it is included, or even why it is some people’s favorite section. It’s entertaining and people like to see models wearing pretty clothes. Many companies use photo editing that can depict perfection, and companies entice customers to buy these clothes that appear to look so perfect on models in pictures. And this works. People are drawn to these clothes, but as soon as they try them on and question why is doesn’t fit them the same way as it fits the
models, they compare and critique themselves, trying to reach that same level of perfection. Memphis Impact doesn’t do this. As a group of teenage girls, we all know the effect this form of advertising has on impressionable young people. That’s why our fashion spread features real and unedited people, so the clothes get the glory without idealizing the bodies underneath them. Everyone deserves to be confident, and comparing oneself to a model can easily take that away. Fashion is important because it is a means of expressing oneself and simultaneously building up one’s confidence.

My name is Langston Myers and I am the editor of 4Memphis Impact. I am a junior at St. Mary’s and have been working with 4Memphis since my freshman year. I adore writing, and spend most of my time writing articles as I write for my school newspaper and another online magazine. My goal for Impact is to give young people a creative outlet and to encourage them to spend time giving back to our city.
My name is Carolyn Lane and I am a senior at St. George’s. I am the editor-inchief of both my school’s award-winning newspaper and literary magazine and a member of the swim team, multiple clubs, and Bridge Builders. I am a part of Memphis Impact because it grants me the opportunity to effect change in my community through my passion for journalism.
My name is Madison Grinder, and I’m a junior at Hutchison School. I’m honored to be a part of the Memphis Impact staff. I play volleyball and lacrosse for my school and play competitive lacrosse with No Excuse. I volunteer with Salvation Army, Su Casa, and the special needs program at Second Presbyterian Church. My name is Merrill Culpepper, and I am a junior at St. Mary’s. I am the stylist for Memphis Impact and I am excited to be a part of this addition to 4Memphis. I have always loved how confident someone’s style can make them feel. Along with working for Memphis Impact, I play soccer and lacrosse for my school, and I am also involved in YoungLife. I am a MUS cheerleader, and I am involved with school organizations such as yearbook, Wilson Society, and Global Ambassadors. Boys Golf
The Memphis University School Varsity Golf Team won the State Championship in Division-II AA.
Girls Golf
The St. George’s boys varsity golf team placed second in Division-II A. Winston Margaritis and Davis Irving placed second and third, respectively.
Memphis represented well at state for girls golf. St. Agnes’ Rachel Heck, who placed first as an individual in her division, led St. Agnes’ varsity golf team to a first place finish in Division-II AA.
The Houston High School Varsity golf Team finished first in Division-I AAA. Baili Park and Jayna Choi placed second and fourth, respectively, in their division.
Girls Soccer
St. George’s Girls Varsity Soccer Team placed first in Division II-A after a challenging season with 15 wins and 7 losses.
The Houston High School Varsity Girls Soccer Team won their eighth state title this year, securing the #1 place in USA Today’s Soccer Rankings for the 2017-2018 season, after beating Collierville High School in the Division-I AAA finals.
Boys and Girls Cross Country
The Memphis University School varsity cross country team placed fourth in the D-II AA State Championship meet. Hastings McEwan and Peter Raves placed ninth and 11th, respectively.

Both the St. George’s boys and girls varsity cross country teams placed third in the D-II A State Championship. Zach Williams placed 12th and Thomas Mann placed 15th in boys, and Allison Newman, Maggie Wilson, and Sarah McDonald placed 4th, 6th, and 8th in girls.
The Evangelical Christian School Varsity Girls Cross Country Team placed fifth in the D-II A State Championship Meet while the Boys Team placed 8th. Holly Huffman placed 10th in the girls division, and Davis Rangi placed ninth in the boys division.
The Houston High School Varsity Cross Country Team finished 2nd in the Division-I AAA State Championship Meet. Lydia Tankersley finished 9th place in the girls division.

MLK50, Bridge Builders educate the Memphis youth By Carolyn Lane On November 10, over 300 students walked into the doors of First Baptist ChurchBroad, committing themselves to the continuation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy, whose life was lost here in Memphis over 49 years before. This event was one of the first in a series created to commemorate the life of Dr. King and mark the 50th anniversary of his assassination, which will occur on April 4 of 2018. The “Our Time, Our Voice: An MLK50 Youth Convening” was co-sponsored by the National Civil Rights Museum and Bridge Builders. At the 7.5 hour event, students had the opportunity to hear from Xiuhtezcatl Martinez – a 17-year-old climate activist, published author, and lead plaintiff in the youth-led environmental class action suit against the federal government – and DJ Cavem Moetavation – an environmental hip-hop artist and activist focused on food justice. These two featured speakers were joined by members of the Memphis community – including National Civil Rights Museum educators Ms. Dory Lerner and Mr. Ryan Jones, Bridge Builders Leadership Board Member Destiny Sobotka, and Action News 5 Anchor Kontji Anthony – to create a series of workshops centered around various social justice topics, including micro-aggressions, healthcare, immigration, anti-bullying, income gap, youth political activity, and more. It is this focus on educating participants that White Station High School Junior Emille Taylor loved. “At MLK50, I learned that just because you don’t view something as your own personal problem doesn’t mean that it’s not a problem at all. One of the keynote speakers was Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, an environmental activist. In his speech & workshop, he taught me a lot about environmental problems, an issue that I personally didn’t feel connected with,” Taylor said. “After listening to him, I realized that one minor issue can have a major outcome for such a large group of people. So, it’s important to stay aware regardless of if you think something is
‘important’ or not.” What Taylor learned at the MLK50 Youth Convening is also echoed in the work she and 7,000 seventh-through-12th-grade students learn while participating with the BRIDGES program. BRIDGES works with students from over 140 different schools in Shelby County, Northern Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas to provide a diverse group of students with experiential learning opportunities and to teach them how to collaborate with their peers. Students can be involved in three BRIDGES programs: Connect, Collaborate, and Change. In Connect, students – regardless if they are current Bridge Builders – are able to participate in events and workshops held by program. Students in the Collaborate program, on the other hand, participate in a week-long summer conference followed by attendance at six events throughout the school year, helping to build students’ confidence and equip them to work in teams. By far the most intensive program, students in BRIDGES Change complete a paid fellowship committing six to nine hours each week to their work in various cohorts, including Educational Justice, Memphis Against Sexual Harassment and Assault, and more. With the conclusion of “Our Time, Our Voice: An MLK50 Youth Convening,” the application officially opened for the 2018-2019 Collaborate program, granting students the opportunity to become a member of the organization and execute positive change in our community. “I can say without a doubt that I’ve never regretted doing Bridge Builders. I feel like everyone at [St. George’s] and beyond can get a lot of meaning out of it,” St. George’s Senior and six-year BRIDGES member Bennett Matson said. “Really, why not do it?

Fashioning Art From Paper Transfiguring 500 years of Art History By Madison Grinder Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper is an expressive compilation of 250 dresses and accessories, along with an Elvis tribute of his famous jumpsuit, on display at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens from October 15, 2017 to January 7, 2018. Bourchgrave’s raw talent and passion for art is evident in her breathtaking exhibit, and she takes pride in being presented in such a “precious and beautiful” museum in Memphis. The intricate designs and enrapturing patterns of Borchgrave’s dresses and accessories present a unique take on paper and fashion in a national retrospective. Primarily, the Belgian artist and sculptor derived inspiration for her dress exhibit from making fabric dresses for her friends. Although she started her artistic studies at age 14, Borchgrave acquired a love for drawing and creating art ever since she learned to hold a pencil. Thus, Borchgrave made her debut in the art world with her collaborative project, Paper in Fashion: one of four big collections of her paper artwork. Currently, Isabelle’s artistic creations are cherished in 80 / December 2017
various parts of the world, from the Palace of Versailles in France to the Dixon in Memphis, Tennessee! In regards to her artistic trials, Borchgrave exclaims that her biggest challenge lies in the process of “telling the story of the Medics, the renaissance Italian style, and the XV century” because of the lack of historical information. Furthermore, Borchgrave exclaims her thoughts on being a woman in the art community by stating that “it’s more difficult for a woman than for a man for sure, but I like the challenge (of being a woman)”. Borchgrave encourages aspiring artists to incorporate any form of artistic expression in their everyday life, for she declares that all people should “draw, watch, see, feel, talk, listen to, and do something (expressive) every single day”. Currently, Borchgrave is working on a new exhibition about Africa and the Silk Road, but she remains grateful to Memphis for allowing her the opportunity to spread her artistic expression of fashion history over the course of 500 years.
