In my junior year of high school I started working part time at Oak Hall. I worked there on a regular basis until I started college at the University of Memphis, at which time I would continue to work for them seasonally until I graduated college. Upon graduating, I started my short-lived career as institutional bond salesman. I was on a path of self-destruction in my attempt to succeed in the crazy days of the Memphis bond business in the early 80’s. In those early years at Oak Hall, I made many lifelong friends and learned many life and work skills that I still use today, but it was the mentoring by Paul Kauerz and Rob Joyner that had the greatest impact on my life. Rob Joyner literally saved my life duck hunting, while Paul reached out to me as I began my bond career by sharing Robert Hastings’s poem “The Station.” I do not know what Paul was seeing in my life at this time for him to share the message of “The Station,” but it was clearly a message that I needed. His friendship and concern for me is something that I have always appreciated, even though this letter will be the first time I will have thanked him for his gesture and impact on my life. The message of “The Station” encourages us not to daily live life worrying about the future, but instead to live and enjoy life daily; the future will come soon enough with a life full of great memories of God using us to love and care for others. There is no greater application of this principal than raising a family. As parents we certainly have our hopes and dreams for our children, but we know that their future is directly tied to our daily loving, caring and teaching them. The Bible is full of the promises to bless our children from generation

to generation, if we raise them to know and love God. Since the founding of America, the promise of our country has been similar to the message of “The Station” success is not our life goal; our success is to work daily to build a future for the next generation. We work to provide a more secure foundation for the next generation to raise their children. This month’s feature story in 4Memphis is about the Conley family of America. Mike Conley Jr. may play basketball for the Memphis Grizzlies, but his success was a generational gift whose roots reach back to the founding of this country. Green Conley, the family patriarch, was a free African American who started the family dynasty in Alabama in the mid-1800s. The family for generations has succeeded in areas of religion, business, arts, medicine, athletics and politics. The family’s success began during the years before slavery had ended in America, continued through the post-Civil War era, and the family grew through the years of America’s segregation. Today the family thrives in all regions of this country, with their positive impact quietly being felt throughout America. Green and Harriet Conley did not raise their children with the intention of starting one of America’s great family dynasties. They raised their children with the simple thought of providing a better foundation for their children to build a better life on. The Conley family journey continues, there is no Station in sight, what Station could hold the energy and gifts of this family. I pray that Memphis’ journey will have the same focus and success of Green Conley and his family’s, born and thrived through a time of great adversity, by focusing on building for the next generation. We are traveling by train, out the windows, we drink in the passing scenes of children waving at a crossing, cattle grazing on a distant hillside, row upon row of corn and wheat, flatlands and valleys, mountains and rolling hillsides and city skylines.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, our dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. Restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes -

waiting, waiting, waiting for the station. “When we reach the station that will be it!” We cry. “When I’m 18.” “When I buy a new 450sl Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off the mortgage!””When I get a promotion.” “When I reach retirement, I shall live happily ever after!” Sooner or later, we realize there is no station, no one place to arrive. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us. “Relish the moment” is a good motto. It isn’t the

burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. Regret is reality, after the facts. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.

The South Lawn was ablaze with a roaring bonfire, fabulous fare from local restaurants, and live music. Not even the threat of a little rain could dampen the fall festivities. The 37th Annual Orpheum Auction was held in early November with an extravagant array of live and silent auction items. This is the largest and most exciting fundraising event of the year at the Orpheum. Over 800 guests joined in the fun and competitive bidding for one of over 400 items up for grabs. The 22nd Blues Ball was held at the Gibson Guitar Factory, and covered the entire block for the annual soiree. This rocking party celebrated the 80th birthdays of both Elvis and Jerry Lee, and also paid homage to the King of the Blues: BB King. Since 1994, The Blues Ball has been one of the biggest and best parties in town, and this final installment was as grand an event as only Pat Kerr Tigrett could imagine. Decorating for the holidays is not always a meditative or relaxing task to enjoy with the family. Often times, pulling down the dusty garlands, blown bulbs and bent tree boughs can lead to frustration and feuding. And when you are trying to keep up with decorating trends, often times you find yourself blowing cash on tree decorations that are costly and do not work with the rest of your décor. Rest assured that many homes experience these pangs of torture when decorating for the season; however, there is a holiday hero, and she is sharing tricks of her trade with 4Memphis. Melissa Kimbrough, owner of Southern Avenue Company in Germantown, was not always the decorating guru. She held a corporate job and raised children, but had always loved decorating for her home as well as her friend’s homes. An admitted “HGTV junkie,” Melissa took the jump to a profession in home décor when she got remarried three years ago (she even decorated for her own wedding!), and got her start professionally with monogramming. After a trip to market in Atlanta, Melissa noticed how much some retailers marked up home decorating items. “I will never forget finding an antique mirror box at market in Dallas that I had already bought in Memphis, and 52 / 4Memphis

noticing that it cost about 20 percent of what I paid for it. I was a single mom. I realized that there has got to be a way to bring people in Memphis great stuff at a fair price.” Melissa has done just that with Southern Avenue Company. The store will take several “shopping laps” around, as it is floor-to-ceiling with everything from scented candles, Christmas trees, garland filler, gifts, and much more. As overwhelming as that may sound, Melissa and her staff are eager to help. Customers bring in deflated wreaths and old garland to the store, and instead of being told to start from scratch, Melissa helps by picking out fillers and floral stems to spruce up decades-old decorations. Stuck in a holiday rut? In fact, Melissa will even make a house call and take a look at what a client has, make note of what they may need and then combine everything into a fresh beautiful look. Melissa notes that this year, the holiday trend is reverting back to a more traditional look. Want to know what is hot (and not) this season? Melissa has offered up a few pointers from the pro:

Update old looks with new floral stems. “It is shocking how much filler and floral stems can change the look to your décor!”

5 Nativity scenes. Nativity scenes never go out of style, no matter what they are made of or how they look.

6 Buy the pieces you love. “The pieces you want to spend your money on are the pieces you see at the store and then go home and continue to think about them. The collaboration of leading chefs from the American Culinary Federation created a delicious multi-course meal. It was a Latin celebration of the Day of the Dead. Colombian singer Marcela Pinilla and her band performed, plus festive performances by arts organizations in ballet and opera. Many guests wore black and white and lined up for the complimentary sugar skull-inspired face painting. The Tree of Life was the magnificent focal point for the night, and party-goers remembered deceased loved ones by hanging their photo on the tree. It’s a Conley Thing

The Remarkable Heritage of Mike Conley, Jr.

Mike Conley, Jr. has led the Memphis Grizzlies franchise to multiple winning seasons, earning himself icon-status for his athletic abilities as well as leadership skills. They say that great leaders are born and not made, and for Mike Conley, Jr., this may be the biggest understatement ever made. Michael Alex “Mike” Conley, Jr. is the son of Michael Alex Conley, Sr., who was former track and field athlete competing primarily in the triple jump and the long jump. Mike Sr. earned himself both gold and silver medals for the triple jump in the 1992 and 1984 Olympics, respectively. In 2004, Conley was inducted into the United States National Track and Field Hall of Fame, and he still owns the U.S. indoor record in the triple jump at 58 feet, 3.25 inches. To watch Mike Conley, Sr.’s jump in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics is eerie as a Grizzly fan. The YouTube video of the feat shows Conley standing at 6 feet, 1 inch (same height as his son) and in full concentration. However, the uncanny resemblance between senior and junior is shocking. Any Grizz fan would notice the distinct profile, the look of determination, and the larger-than-life grin at victory. The feat of his remarkable jump is wild to watch. It is freakish to witness the achievement. Mike Jr. evidently got his pension for high-fives and fist pumps from his old man. And yet both father and son are soft spoken and modest, thinking about their answers before speaking, a rare trait among celebrated athletes.

Mike Conley Jr. and Sr. are not the only professional athletes in the Conley family. Mike Sr.’s brother (Mike Jr.’s uncle) is Steve Conley, a retired NFL linebacker who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts in his three-year career. In fact, Sydney Conley, Mike Sr.’s daughter and Mike Jr.’s sister, is a collegiate track star standout at the University of Kansas. However, the athletic gene for the Conley’s is traceable to the late 1800s: Jess ‘Longshot’ Conley, the first Conley professional athlete in 1890, was the last black jockey to place in the Kentucky Derby. Athletics is not the only notable trait in the long Conley family lineage. Two hundred years ago, Green Conley and Harriet Conley (unrelated) started the Conley family legacy in the Tennessee Valley area. Green was born of a union of an Irish slaveholder and one of his Black African servants in Georgia. Harriet and her brothers were born of similar circumstance in Alabama. When the two married, Harriet’s brothers, Paschal, William, and Hamilton all lived together and utilized their talents in athletics, leadership and scholarship to form the foundation of the Free Black

Elite in the region prior to the Civil War, which later resulted in the Talented Tenth community at the turn of the century. According to public landownership records, the family was the largest African-American landholder in Alabama before World War II, acquiring tracts of land throughout the Tennessee Valley. The Conley family, already remarkable for their accomplishments as free blacks during Civil War-era South, continued to grow businesses, serve their community, and even garner some attention for their striking good looks through the ages. Of the sons of Green Conley, Alexander (Mike Conley’s heritage) was especially gifted in athletics and the arts. And while Mike Jr. has not explored much other than the art of leading a NBA squad, his father is quite the talented painter. However, family historian and distant cousin Roger Conley Wood notes other distinct long withstanding Conley father-son traits: “In my mind, the story of Mike Conley Jr. is less about athletic legacy, and more about a bond, a commitment, a promise, between father and son. The concept of a Conley Bond is a commitment to give one’s very best effort to support and develop another family member. With fathers and sons, this is especially important. Mike’s ancestor, Green Conley, began this legacy of commitment to his first born son, Alexander I, born in 1845.

Alexander, in turn raised his own son, Alexander II with the same commitment. I saw Alexander III with his own son Mike Sr. at a family gathering. I could literally feel the promise that the father made to his son, and this example provided me and others with an updated blueprint of a longstanding tradition.” The Conley family does not stop there. Branches and braches of their family tree are full of somebodies, like Binford Conley (February 13, 1933 – September 1, 2011), founder of the Alabama State Black History Archives. This is noteworthy because, as many African Americans alive today can attest, problems like illiteracy and poor record keeping from slave owners have kept many black families from fully exploring their history. Congressman Bennett McVey Stewart (August 6, 1912 – April 26, 1988) was a Democratic U.S. Representative from Illinois. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, he was baptized at Meridianville Primative Baptist Church, one of the many churches founded by members of the Conley Family. Today, distant relatives of Mike Conley continue to impress. Melinda Wilson Ramey, PhD, is a Memphis native and graduated from Houston High School and later attended Vanderbilt University. She went on to act as President of the

Black Theater Association, and is now an award-winning theater director. Rita Stewart Mack is a Nashville native and graduated from Tennessee State University in Nashville. Not to be outdone by family, she became the founder of the McDonald’s Female Franchise Owners Association, became Chair & CEO of the National Black McDonald’s Operators Association (NBMOA), and basically schooled young women everywhere on being a female entrepreneur. The Conley family is filled to the brim with doctors, dignitaries, military stand-outs, artists and athletes. They are a fascinating lineage whose identities are shaped by the commitments and promises they make to each other. Mike Conley Jr. is an example of the power of such commitments from a family. He is the product of a family tradition of support and encouragement. *Just prior to the attacks on Paris, the Conley family was recognized for their commitment to military and serving France as an ally, with the French government even requesting that four family members travel to Paris to receive honors. 4Memphis would like to thank the Conley family as well as all of the other military men and women that support our freedoms.

This month, we took a page out of the pros’ recipe books and rounded up their Favorite Things, Foodie-Style!

Central BBQ

Owen Brennan’s

1 slab Ribs (Charlie’s Meat Market) 1 bottle Central BBQ Rib Rub

For the Crawfish Etoufee ½ lb Butter 1 qt Chicken stock 1 lb Yellow onion, diced ¼ C Garlic, minced 1 lb Celery, diced 1 Bay leaf ½ lb Green bell 1 tsp Cayenne pepper pepper, diced ½ C Green onion, ½ C Tomato paste chopped

Central BBQ Ribs Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Peel off tough membrane that covers the bony side of the ribs. Apply rub to ribs on all sides. Lay ribs on two layers of foil, shiny side out and meaty side down. Lay two layers of foil on top of ribs and roll and crimp edges tightly, edges facing up to seal. Cook for 4 hours. Serve with your favorite side, like biscuits, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, or greens!

½ C Parsley, chopped 1 C All purpose flour 1 qt Cold water 1 lb Crawfish tails, cleaned and peeled Salt and pepper to taste

Sauté onions, celery, green peppers, and bay leaves in the butter until onions are translucent. Add tomato paste, chicken stock, and garlic and sauté for 15 minutes. Mix flour and water (ROUX), whip until smooth, and add to stock pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and add seasonings. Just before finishing add the green onions and parsley. Add crawfish and mix well. For the Vegetable Sauté ½ lb Yellow squash, chopped ½ lb Zucchini, chopped ½ lb Red onion, chopped ¼ lb Green bell pepper, chopped

¼ lb Red bell pepper, chopped 2 oz Olive oil ¼ C White wine Salt and pepper to taste

Pre-heat sauté skillet, then add olive oil. Once oil opens up, add vegetables. Sautee until tender (al dente) then deglaze with white wine. Add salt & pepper to taste. Remove from heat. For the Blackened Snapper 1 each Snapper filet, skin removed 1 oz Olive oil

2 Tbl Blackening seasoning

Season each side of the skinless red snapper filet with prepared blackening seasoning. Pre-heat sauté skillet, then add olive. Once oil opens up, add the red snapper filet. Cook two minutes per side (depending on the thickness of the filet) or until tender and flaky. Ladle the crawfish etouffee over the blackened red snapper. Add side of vegetables and some rice. Garnish with fresh minced parsley. 76 / 4Memphis

Grandaddy’s Holiday Oatmeal Cookies 1 ½ C Flour ½ tsp Baking powder ¾ tsp Cinnamon ¼ tsp Fresh nutmeg, grated ¼ tsp Salt 2 sticks Unsalted butter, slightly softened 1 C Light brown sugar, packed

1 C Sugar 2 Eggs 3 C Rolled oats (not quick cook) ¾ C Shelled pistachios, rough chopped 1 C Dried cranberry 8 oz White chocolate, melted (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350F and have one oven rack in the lower third of the oven, and one in the upper third of the oven. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper or a silpat mat. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Set aside. With a hand mixer or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter until light in color and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides with a spatula and add the sugars. Cream together for an additional minute until well combined. With the mixer on low speed, add in the eggs one at a time until combined. Turn off the machine and add in the flour mixture all at once. On low speed, pulse the mixture together for a few seconds at a time until almost fully incorporated. Add in the oats, cranberries and pistachios and fold in by hand. This will help keep the cookies moist after baking by not over-working the flour. Shape into large balls, about 1 ½-2 inches in diameter, and place on the prepared sheet pans, no more than 8 per cookie sheet. Place in the oven and bake for 22-25 minutes, rotating the pans from the top rack to the bottom rack halfway through cooking. Cookies are done when the bottoms are browned and the tops are lightly browned. Remove from the oven and allow to sit on the cookie sheets for 2 minutes before transferring to cooling racks to cool completely. Drizzle with melted white chocolate, if desired.

6 uncooked Lasagna sheets 1 lb Part skim ricotta cheese, divided 2 lbs Mozzarella cheese, halved

3 pts Luchessi’s Meat Sauce 6 oz Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

In a 9 x 12 casserole dish, layer two lasagna sheets; top with ricotta, .5 lb mozzarella, and 1 pint meat sauce; repeat for the middle layer. The third layer, top with ricotta, 1 lb mozzarella, meat sauce, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Hot Iron Mussels “These mussels remind me so much of my time spent in New Zealand over the holidays. Just like they were there, these mussels are simple and yet full of flavor.” - Chef Sam Miller

20-25 Green lip mussels (or freshest mussels available) 2 oz Garlic oil 1 Shallot, minced

Pinch of chopped herbs (thyme, parsley, chives) ¼ C Cherry tomatoes, quartered Toast points to soak juice

Heat cast iron pan until very hot. Arrange mussels with hinge of mussels parallel to the pan. When all mussels have opened, drizzle with oil. Discard any dead mussels (mussels that do not open). Sprinkle mussels with shallot, herbs, tomatoes, and seasonings. Take the pan off the heat and serve hot. Serve the dish with toast points.

Napa Café’s Lamb For the Lamb Marinade ½ C Oil 3 stalks Lemongrass 2 Thai chiles 2 knuckles Ginger 5 sprig Thyme 3 Bay leaves 5 cloves Garlic 5 Star anise Mix all of the elements in a food processor. Spread generously over lamb loins (we recommend four). Marinate the lamb loins overnight (or at least for 4 hours) in your refrigerator. For the Biryani Rice 3 C Rice 3 Tbl Butter 6 Tbl Golden raisins 6 Tbl Almonds

2 tsp Turmeric 6 cups water 1 tsp White wine Cinnamon stick 1 tsp each Cumin, Cardamom, Coriander

Boil water and prepare rice according to packaging. Once finished, fluff rice while mixing in other ingredients. Set aside. For the Chimichurri 2 C Red wine vinegar 1 tsp Kosher salt 1 ½ tsp Chopped garlic

4 Shallots, chopped 3 Jalapeño, minced 3 C Olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients in a food processor. When finished, drizzle over the lamb. Side with the rice and enjoy!

Roasted Rack of Elk 1 Whole clean and trimmed elk loin 1 Juniper berry 25 Coffee beans 3 Tbl Allspice

1 stick Cinnamon 4 Cardamom pods 3 Clove star anise ½ C Dehydrated brown sugar Pinch Black Sea salt

For the Rub: Prepare all the spices by toasting in a sauté pan. Do not mix spices until all have been toasted separately, and then the spices can be ground together. Mix equal parts prepared rub and coarse black sea salt. For the Elk: Heavily season the elk and allow marinate for at least one hour. Sear on all sides and roast for 12 minutes in a 400 degree oven or until medium rare. Allow to rest and slice.

Pan Seared Halibut with Potato Gratan and Red Bell Pepper Sauce 1 8 oz Filet of halibut 2 Tbl Olive oil 1 Large red bell pepper 1 Shallot 2 Whole star anise

¼ C White wine vinegar 2 C Parmesan cheese 2 oz Whiskey Micro or mixed greens 1 C Water Salt and pepper 4 Large potatoes, peeled 2 C Heavy cream

For the Gratan: Slice potatoes thin with a mandolin. Soak potato slices in heavy cream. Lay potatoes overlapping in an 8×8 baking dish. Once one layer is complete, sprinkle with parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper. Repeat this process until all potatoes are used. Pour the cream the potatoes were soaked in over the layered potatoes. Bake covered at 375° for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes. For the Pepper Sauce: Roughly chop peppers and shallots. Cover the bottom of a sauté pan with 1 Tbl olive oil and set over medium high heat. Add peppers and shallots and sauté 2 or 3 minutes. Deglaze pan with white wine vinegar. Add the star anise and whiskey. Reduce by half. Add 1 cup water, reduce heat, and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove star anise and transfer pepper mixture to food processor. Season with salt and pepper and blend until smooth. For the Fish: Season fish with salt and pepper. Cover the bottom of a sauté pan with 1 Tbl olive oil, and set over medium high heat. Once hot, carefully lay fish in pan to sear. Cook 1 or 2 minutes and flip fish over. Transfer pan to a 350° oven and bake for 5 to 6 minutes. December 2015 / 79

The weekend kicked off with a Preview Party with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, music by Jamie Baker, and a wonderful silent auction. Discovery Park of America A Legacy for Learning in Union City by Sandi Butler Hughes | Photos courtesy of Discovery Park of America

Along the Highway 51 section of the Great River Road, about two hours north from Memphis is a whole new world to discover. Literally. The Discovery Park of America in rural northwest Tennessee is a world-class park with a 100,000 square foot building for learning and exploring. And at the behest of founder Robert Kirkland, just don’t call it a museum! The Discovery Park opened in November, 2013, and is set on 50 acres on what had been farmland, just off the main thoroughfare in Union City. The late Robert Kirkland, founder of Kirkland’s stores, and his wife Jenny donated more than $82 million for the Park to be built in their hometown and beloved Union City. The white, modern styled building is in stark contrast to the landscape. Ten different themed galleries offer something of interest to absolutely everyone. The Natural History Gallery features a dinosaur exhibit plus an impressive rock and mineral collection. That gallery blends into the Regional History exhibit with a 22,000 gallon aquarium and an earthquake simulator. Reelfoot Lake is only 20 minutes from Discovery Park, and is a significant part of the Regional History gallery. The state-of-the-art simulator, complete with a wraparound screen and special effects, replicates the 1811-12 quakes that formed Reelfoot Lake. The Regional exhibit flows into the Native American Gallery with walls covered with a magnificent collection of arrowheads, including many found in the region. War buffs enjoy the Military Gallery with exhibits from the Revolutionary to the Gulf wars. A WWII biplane dangles overhead, and a Vietnam era helicopter is open for inquiring minds and would-be pilots to climb into the cockpit. Additional galleries explore Space, Energy, Transportation with more unique and interactive exhibits. The Kirklands love and appreciation for northwest Tennessee is also on display at Discovery Park and is woven into the exhibits as a part of the learning experience. An oral history theater in the Regional History Gallery features longtime residents sharing their stories and reminiscences about the area. In the Military Gallery is another oral history screen with area veterans sharing their personal experiences of war. The Tennessee Room houses a replica of an area drugstore and soda fountain. Instilling a sense of pride in Union City and Tennessee is another of the important lessons that is integral for Discovery Park exhibits. Outside the Discovery Park building is another realm of discovery. The Settlement exhibit includes a collection of fourteen, full-scale log cabins. A Doctor’s cabin describes medical care in the 1800’s; another cabin houses the Obion County Museum, complete with area memorabilia and cemetery records for genealogy research; David Crockett’s dogtrot cabin houses an exhibit on one side and a theater on the other, all dedicated to his time in northwest Tennessee. David, as a docent shared he preferred to “Davey,” is a recurring character throughout Discovery Park, and another example of inspiring regional pride. He may have been notorious for the Alamo, but not before leaving a significant mark on northwest Tennessee. 98 / 4Memphis

The fall day was ideal for strolling and exploring the grounds, and comfortable shoes are a must. A working grist mill, a barn, a small area for row crops and a grape vineyard are all part of the Settlement compound. An 1897 idyllic church building was relocated to the Park, and modern day couples can still tie the knot in the picturesque little white chapel. As the chapel bells ring periodically, they add a bit of charm and reverence on this autumn day. Freedom Square features Main Street with a period firehouse and two antique fire trucks, a sundry store that is an actual shop selling drinks and snacks, and a barbershop. The Liberty Hall building holds a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell in the rotunda. Obion County is once again given a place of honor in Liberty Hall at the entrance. The names of each U.S. Congressman serving the area beginning in 1823 through the current representative, Stephen Fincher are listed on the foyer wall. Positioned along Main Street are five bronze statues that, at first glance, seem a bit random. The statues are of Ronald Reagan, Thomas Jefferson, Prometheus, Ayn Rand, and Abraham Lincoln. These figures were personally selected (and paid for) by Mr. Kirkland and are all figures who influenced him. With that explanation, the statue selection doesn’t seem so random after all. Traveling exhibits and special events keep it interesting for regular visitors. An exhibit on WWI hero Alvin York is open through early January, then opening in late January, the notable “Bodies Revealed” exhibit will be on view. Wine & Paint classes, Pottery classes, and lectures are offered consistently, plus live music, a car show, an air show, and wine tasting events. During December, the Discovery Park is transformed into a Christmas Village. For little ones, the Train Depot recreates the magic of the movie, The Polar Express, complete with the Conductor, hot chocolate, and yes, even snow. A ride to the top of the Tower puts the large expanse of the Discovery Park into perspective, for today and for the future. The observation deck gives a bird’s eye view of the Park and the potential for growth there and for all of Union City. The corridor for expansion of the I-69 interstate is just beyond the Park’s border, and eventually will deliver thousands of drivers and their dollars into northwest Tennessee. The area is poised to be a gateway for travelers along the route, and attractions such as a new Reelfoot Lake State Park Interpretive Visitors Center, under construction and opening in early 2017, and the Discovery Park will welcome them into the northwest corner of the state. Groups of giggling school kids excited to be on a field trip to clusters of senior citizens reminiscing about items from a bygone era wander the inside galleries and meander the outdoor exhibits. The Kirkland name may be well known in home decor, but their legacy of the Discovery Park of America is rooted in learning and pride in having Tennessee roots.

Coordinator, Literacy Mid-South A deep sadness hovers over the three characters whose livesintertwine in Richard Alley’s Five Night Stand. Their common bond is alove for jazz, particularly the music of Oliver Pleasant, who is playing the final five shows of his career in New York City. Alley vividly creates the rich history of Oliver’s life, from his discovery and passion for music, to the women he loved, to how all of that led to a lonely existence where jazz was the only genuine connection he still had. Frank Severs is introduced as he is coming to terms with being middle aged and out of work. There’s tension at home, and Frank’s way out is to write an article on Oliver’s performances. It could be the break he needs to get back into the game and re-kindle the spark that he and his wife have lost.Agnes Cassady is a musician who has traveled to New York to hear Oliver because it might be the last piece of joy she ever experiences. There’s something inside her that is slowly taking over, and a cure is nowhere in sight. Due to this, she has grown detached from the outside world. Oliver is flattered to see that he has reached so many throughout his career, but these faces become hollow as he notices each night that the table reserved for his family remains empty. Throughout the novel, we learn why they are not there, as Oliver’s life was only about the music. It’s what kept him going, but now he is realizing that while the music will live forever, the people who depended on him will not. Frank and Agnes look to the soothing power of jazz to heal their wounds, each reminded of the hardships facing them once Oliver’s five magical shows are over. While Five Night Stand is filled with regret and melancholy, it is not a depressing experience. Instead, it highlights how a life of adventure can be shared through the creation of something universal: music. Richard Alley explores the ways it affects people’s lives, brings them together, and how it can heal a fractured soul when all hope seems lost. Available locally at the Booksellers at Laurelwood.

The Memphis Bowery Opening Reception The Big Apple welcomed a group of Memphis artists with an opening celebration at the Openhouse Bowery in downtown NYC. The group showing entitled The Memphis Bowery featured works by Catherine Erb, Eli Gold, Megan Hurdle, Stephanie King, and Margaret Munz-Losch. Mei Ann Chen Circle of Friends The women’s philanthropic support organization, Mei-Ann’s Circle of Friends recently celebrated the opening of the 2015-16 MSO Season with a Launch Party. The ladies gathered at a member’s home to mix, mingle, and honor the symphony’s music director, Mei-Ann Chen.
