An inaugural event will be held in Memphis, May 1-31, and while it is a monthlong event, the impression will last a lifetime. “Toward Justice: A City-Wide Upstanders’ Project,” presented by the Memphis Jewish Community Center (MJCC), is a free event open to the community that will be held at the MJCC and is the first of its kind. "Toward Justice: A City-Wide Upstanders’ Project" is the brainchild of Marcy Stagner, M.A. Ed. and Program Director of Cultural Arts and Adult Services, Memphis Jewish Community Center, and is an idea she has had for a while. When Marcy presented the concept a year-and-a-half ago to some of her coworkers and MJCC staff, they were very supportive and encouraged her to run with it. “We are all so over exposed to narratives that are very negative, and we want to change the direction of the narrative by exposing the organizations and people who are making the world a better place; change the narrative to a more positive one, while at the same time, doing the challenging work of recognizing where good is lacking so we can make progress as we move forward,” Marcy says. The month-long festivities will kick off May 2 with Keynote Speaker Bob Zellner, who is one of the most influential leaders in the civil rights movement, from the 1960s to today. The son and grandson of Ku Klux Klan members, he risked his life in the fight to achieve The Second Emancipation. Bob worked alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, Rosa Parks, and many other civil rights leaders. The Carl E. Moore exhibit will be on display all month, with an opening reception held the evening of May 3. “The work I’ve created over the last few years has dealt with identity and color. During this process, my goal was to compare social ideologies about race, stereotypes, and belief systems to everyday color and the perception of these colors in our environment,” the artist states.
THE LINE-UP E OT ! YN KE ENT EV
Keynote Speaker: Bob Zellner MAY 2nd 7:00 PM
Drawing on decades of experience guiding the movement and his ongoing active role, he presents a modern-day message for combating deep-seated racism, discrimination and prejudice, and sparking widespread social change.
BESA: The promise film screening will be held May 15 at 7 pm and is the neverbefore-told story of Albania - a small European country that opened its borders to shelter Jewish refugees, even as it endured a brutal Nazi occupation. “Barrier Free” is a socially-engaged art installation created by Memphis-based artist Yancy Villa-Calvo about the impact of barriers.Through multimedia work, she seeks to create awareness, provoke a thought, and engage into conversation on issues of social justice and equality. Her work is displayed in private collections in the U.S., Mexico, Netherlands, Brazil, and Israel. The “I Am Your Protector” Exhibit is a powerful storytelling and photography exhibit that will be displayed May 1 - 31 to share diverse stories of people who have been “protectors” of someone who may be different from others, and who stand up and speak up for each other across religion, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs, and any lines of perceived divide. “We want to show people the positive, and this exhibit will feature their photo and story on how they are making Memphis a better place,” Marcy says. Participating committee agencies throughout the community include The National Civil Rights Museum & MLK 50, Facing History and Ourselves, ArtsMemphis, Indie Memphis, OUT Memphis, Memphis Islamic Center, Crosstown Arts, The Shelby County Government Office of Multicultural and Hispanic Affairs, and Latino Memphis. Marcy says that she thinks of it like a puzzle, and all of these elements are pieces of the puzzle. She hopes this creates a new narrative - one that exposes us to a constructive and unifying message and shifts the tide of dialogue to one of hope, reverence, and the honoring of shared experiences. For more information about Toward Justice, visit jccmemphis.org/justice.

"I’ve taken the color black and placed it into the environment, and used it as part of the emotional conversation. The goal is to make the dialogue more about the artwork and the color of the characters, even though the characters are part of the narrative."

The Run for the Roses
DERBY DAY
e n t e r ta i n i n g on
By JJ Keras Photography by Zach Pagano/TODAY
The Kentucky Derby is one of my favorite parties to plan because it has old world feminine and masculine tones that mix perfectly. The feminine side is brought out with the bonnets, gloves, pearls and finger sandwiches. The masculine side by the bourbon, cigars, and of course, betting! And if the Derby doesn’t suit you, grab a sombrero and make yourself a fresh margarita, as it’s also Cinco De Mayo on May 5th. The 2018 Kentucky Derby will take place on May 5th on NBC and is the 144th renewal of "The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports." Here are tips to plan the perfect Derby Soiree!
FOOD & DRINK
DECOR
Mint Juleps - 2-3 ounces of bourbon - 1 bunch of mint - 2 tsp. simple syrup - crushed ice To make a proper mint julep: Pour 2 teaspoons of simple syrup in the bottom of a julep or rocks glass. Muddle 1 bunch of mint by slapping it to release the oils. Rub the mint on the sides of the cup and then leave it on the bottom of the glass. Your guests can also select their own mint from a mint plant and muddle it themselves. Don't overwork the mint. Crushed ice is a must for a proper julep. Either use your blender or place the ice in a plastic bag and crush with a mallet. Pour 2 to 3 ounces of bourbon on top of the ice. Garnish with mint (after muddled) and use a short straw so the fragrance of the mint bouquet will greet the drinker with each sip. You can also dress up your julep cup with a seersucker bow tie!
The Run for the Roses is a tradition since 1952. Red Freedom Roses (known for their lush petals and bright cherry hue) are the Official Flower of the Kentucky Derby and a must at any Derby party!
If you want to give guests additional drink options, Mint Julep variations include: - Rhubarb Mint Julep - Blood Orange Mint Julep - Sparkling Ginger Mint Julep - Sweet Tea Mint Julep Kentucky Bourbon Meatballs A bite of protein for a long day! -1 pound bag frozen meatballs -1/2 cup ketchup -1/2 cup brown sugar, packed -1/4 cup bourbon -1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice -1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients except your meatballs. Mix really well. Place your frozen meatballs into your crock pot, and pour the whiskey sauce in on top. Stir well so each meatball is coated with the whiskey sauce. Turn up the heat to high. Leave it on high for about an hour, stirring a couple times. Once the meatballs have somewhat thawed, go ahead and turn your crockpot down to low. So the wonderful whiskey sauce doesn’t burn! That’s the best part! One bag of (1 pound) frozen meatballs is only about 18 to 20 larger size meatballs. That is perfect for a small get-together. But if you’re hosting a larger party, use two bags of meatballs, and double the recipe. 28 / May 2018 / 4Memphis
You can also create red roses for your table. Simply roll red paper napkins into roses and bundle in a silver display piece. Pretty and practical!

INSPIRED SHOPPING L ee A nn M cGhee C e le b ra t e s 2 0 Ye a rs of Mo r e Th a n Wo r ds By Sandi Butler Hughes Photography by Alex Ginsburg When shopping for a “happy” to celebrate a friend, choosing the ideal gift for a special occasion, or finding a unique keepsake to welcome a newborn, locals know More Than Words is the place to find just the right thing. This month marks 20 years of providing unique gifts; and for shop owner Lee Ann McGhee, it is a passion as much as it is a career. When Lee Ann was a young girl, she began collecting meaningful quotes and scriptures being struck by the intense power of written words. While attending college in California, Lee Ann was the first candidate to choose calligraphy as her artistic concentration. She was fascinated by the art of calligraphy and its intricate use in historical manuscripts. Focusing on lettering and embellishments would allow her to embrace her passion and express motivational words in artistic form. Lee Ann studied under a nationally-acclaimed artist, Frank Zamora. With an eye for detail, Zamora demanded perfection. Initially this expectation was extremely trying; however, this encouraged Lee Ann to develop an artistic skill that is uniquely hers. Today, she masterfully combines precise lettering with creative designs yielding powerful pieces of art. Words in this form have the innate ability to evoke emotion, often providing inspiration and hope. Lee Ann uses her artistic gift to bring joy to others. At the tender age of 18, she began selling her work. She took custom orders on commission, sold wholesale to boutiques, and participated in art shows and festivals. “I had a dream… a passion to offer framed words of encouragement...pieces that people could keep close and read daily,” Lee Ann said. Her fun pieces range from witty pet sayings to the humorous definition of a “Southerner.” Upon graduation, newlywed Lee Ann continued to use her calligraphy as

a source of extra income. After she had her children, she kept creating her art while the kids were at mother’s day out, and she hosted home shows and participated in art festivals. On a whim Lee Ann decided to put an ad in Southern Living magazine noting “Wholesale inquiries invited.” She was flooded with orders and began selling wholesale to over 600 retail boutiques all over the country, even one in Japan! She hired helpers to frame and used her home as a workshop, complete with UPS daily pick ups to accommodate all the shipments. After moving to California and then Birmingham, Alabama, Lee Ann gave up her business to be a full-time mom and be involved in ministry and community organizations. Then life happened. She found herself divorced, with no money, no job, and two small children. “At a challenging crossroads, I moved in with my parents so I could get my feet back on the ground.” Lee Ann went on several job interviews, but she wanted something that would allow her to be with her children as they were only six and eight years old. Again, inspiration struck. “It dawned on me that I could take a stab at selling my calligraphy again. My parents and friends told me I was out of my mind - that I would never be able to support two children doing calligraphy. I’m the stubborn type; when people tell me that I can’t do something, I roll up my sleeves and say ‘Oh really? Watch me!’ So I bet on myself, trusted God, and went for it.” Upon this new start, she meticulously designed 96 original pieces. These included quotes and scriptures individually enhanced with artwork that complemented the written words. “I invited my friends and family, and their friends and family, to attend a home art show. I was nervous but sold all 96 pieces in one day, and I knew then that God was creating a way for me to support my family in a most unusual fashion,” she recalled.
Upon this new start, she meticulously designed 96 original pieces. Lee Ann decided to open a retail store in 1998 because the business had overtaken her home. Most rooms were full of displays, the upstairs playroom was a workshop, the garage was the stockroom, and the kitchen was the check out station. ”Believe it or not, my kitchen appliances included a cash register,” Lee Ann laughed. “It hit me that it was time to make a change when my daughter Mallory asked, ‘Mom, can’t we just have a normal home like everybody else?’” So with God’s grace and connections through dear friends, she secured a charming 1,400 square foot space in a converted home next to the Germantown Commissary in the Historic District of Germantown. She named her store More Than Words. “Words” referring to her calligraphy and “More Than” being all the unique gifts she offered. She created over 600 special quotes for family members, wedding gifts, baby, pets, and bereavement. The small cottage business was very successful, and Lee Ann knew she would soon need more room to continue to grow. She became interested in renting a large 5,000 square foot space prominently located on West Street in Market Square, but it was way out of her budget. So she waited and watched as the space sat empty for 18 months. “I got my nerve up to ask for a personal face-to-face meeting with the owner. I was told that that was not ‘protocol’ and would not happen. I prayed about IT and was persistent in my plea. Finally they broke down and hesitantly met with me.” Lee Ann knew that her best-selling feature for acquiring the new space was her current shop in the historic district. “I introduced myself and asked that they follow me over to my existing shop one street over, and they obliged. I gave them the grand tour and introduced them to all of my enthusiastic sales people. Impressed with the successful business and unique environment I had created as a single mom, they decided to take a chance on me! I was trembling in my boots. The monthly rent was six times what I was currently paying. I knew that I would either hit it big or go bankrupt!” Lee Ann said. Again she was faced with the decision to play it safe or take a risk. She bet on herself and strongly relied on God to make this work! The new location was - and still is - a hit, and Lee Ann was thankful she took that huge leap of faith. She never thought she could fill up the 5,000 square foot space, but over the years she has, and it’s overflowing with treasures. She designed the sections of the store around her calligraphy topics including wedding, baby, family, home, entertaining, friendship, pets, motivational, recovery, encouragement, and scripture.
She also continues to search for unique, handcrafted jewelry and keepsakes that are especially personal and meaningful, and she takes pride in representing the works of over 30 local artists. After 10 years in business, she was in a severe accident in the Ozarks. She was thrown 64 feet off a motorcycle, with no helmet, across the highway and landed a mere 12 inches from a huge drop off. She suffered from multiple, life-threatening injuries including a severe traumatic brain injury, several skull and facial fractures, a collapsed lung, and more. She spent 21 days in an intensive care unit at a trauma hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Unconscious for days, doctors were not sure she was going to survive. “My brain injury and nerve damage was so severe that I lost all my small motor skills. I was essentially like a toddler. I was not capable of doing anything by myself. I went to recover at my sister’s home in Miami for five months. She and a close friend assisted and encouraged me daily. They took me to world-renowned physicians. In and out of four hospitals, and after five surgeries, I never thought I would hold a pen in my hand again, much less be able to do calligraphy,” she said. Despite her injuries, she worked hard for almost two years to recover. “I learned that the brain is a marvelous organ, and it can definitely be re-trained.” Physical therapists helped her regain her memory, talk coherently, use her hands, walk again, drive, read, and write again. “It was a humbling, terrifying, and uncertain time. Nevertheless, God gave me the determination to get up every day and choose to persevere. I am truly a walking miracle! All of the doctors told me they had not seen a CAT Scan so bad except on a cadaver. I held onto God’s powerful promise from Jeremiah 29:11 - ‘For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future.’ This is one of my favorite verses to do in calligraphy, knowing it encourages others as well. The experience of the accident and having to rebuild my entire life taught me to put all things into perspective and never to take anything for granted,” she shared. Lee Ann did indeed “hit it big” - More Than Words is celebrating 20 successful years. She continues to celebrate her faith, her health, and her many adoring customers and friends. Lee Ann smiles, “It’s a beautiful thing when a passion and career come together!”

The Beginning
They knew that they wanted their wedding to feel like a true Memphis wedding in every way! Both had attended a benefit at the Visible Music College shortly before they got engaged and absolutely loved that it was such a unique venue in the heart of downtown Memphis with beautiful lights and glass walls that made you feel like you were outside. That was the first decision they made that really set the tone for the style and theme of the day. Laurie's dad is the CEO of Memphis in May, so he was their “inhouse” wedding planner since he does event planning for a living and knew exactly how to incorporate the soul of Memphis into their wedding reception.

WEDDINGS
Mr.
The highlight of the day was when their two pugs, Louie and Coco, arrived after the ceremony for pictures with the wedding party. It made those pictures so fun and special. Their pugs got a few shout outs during our ceremony so it was even more fun to have them there afterwards for photos. After everyone left, Laurie changed into her “reception look,” J.L. was the first one to see her in the fitted dress without the full ball gown skirt. Then off they went to the reception to dance to amazing soulful music by The Sensation Band, incredibly southern fare from A Moveable Feast, background music from local blue legend (Blind Missisippi Morris) during cocktail hour, a surprise appearance from local rapper Al Kapone and of course… they couldn’t let guests leave without a Gibson’s donut, which were displayed on a giant donut wall built by Laurie's brother. Their amazing photographer, Kara Joy of Thankfully Taken, captured so many fun and special moments while they danced the night away with friends and family. It was truly a dream come true and exceeded their expections for the wedding day and evening.
The Getaway They left bright and early the next day for their honeymoon in Great Exuma, Bahamas at Sandals Emerald Bay. They planned to just relax and enjoy the time together with the exception for one very special excursion… swimming with pigs. It was an experience like any other!

The Wedding Day

J.L. Stiles & Laurie Holt first met in the 6th grade at ECS. He was her middle school crush, though he didn’t know it. They graduated from high school in 2004 and went their separate ways. He sent Laurie a Facebook message in March of 2016. She lived in Birmingham, AL and he had settled in back home in Memphis. They kept in touch over the next few months and he finally asked her on a date in December of 2017---her middle school crush FINALLY asked her out 20 years later! They were smitten right away and the rest was history. Six months after that first date, he surprised her with a proposal in the chapel on the middle school campus where they first met.

Houston High School student, Ellen Suchomel became a part of the St. Jude family in the fall of her senior year after being diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer in the muscles. In support of her and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Houston High School’s student government association set up a fundraiser where students competed in bands and as soloists. The battle of the bands was dubbed with the name Battle for Ellen in support of Houston’s very own Ellen Suchomel. All monetary proceeds from Battle for Ellen went to St. Jude. The musical groups and soloists performed on Mustang Stadium’s turf field where students were able to sit on picnic blankets and enjoy the live music from their fellow classmates. There was a variety of concessions from food truck favorites, such as Mempops and Say Cheese, that fans could choose to munch on during the show.

Battle for Ellen
At the end of the performances, the audience was able to vote for their favorite band and soloist through monetary donations placed in the band’s jars. The band and soloist with the most money in their jar was named the winner of the battle of the bands. Lydia Waldrip was declared winner in the soloist category while the band, Stereotypes won for the band category. Much was to be celebrated at Battle for Ellen as Ellen went through her last day of radiation and the event raised a total of $2,142 for St. Jude. Overall, the event was a huge success that helped support the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Houston High School student who went through her very own battle with cancer. PENNY Hardaway Returns to His Alma Mater By Kara Kane
As it was announced in March, Penny Hardaway is returning to his alma mater to coach the Memphis Tigers for the 2018-2019 season. But, as most locals know, this is not the beginning of his basketball career in Memphis. In fact, some may say it all began when he decided to referee for youth sports at the Memphis YMCA. Hardaway always believed that he was meant to play basketball. Growing up, he played for Treadwell High School of Memphis, Tennessee, where h e averaged 36 points and was named National High School player of the year by Parade Magazine in his senior year. His outstanding performance in high school caught the eyes of many college programs, but ultimately he committed to Memphis State, now known as the University of Memphis. Before Hardaway entered into his sophomore year of college, he was selected to play for the USA Developmental Team. His stats showed the hard work and perseverance that he possessed while playing for the Tigers. He graduated early as to begin his career in the NBA with the Orlando Magic, where he remained until 1999. Playing a number of years in the NBA, he left after 15 seasons and began his coaching career in 2011. Hardaway, wanting to remain in his hometown, has been coaching East High since 2015 and has lead them to three consecutive state championships. His work at East High has helped push them into national ranks, ending their past season ranked #2 in the nation and #1 in the state of In addition to Hardaway’s unbelievable success within the game of basketball, he has also been a true champion of his hometown. He has quietly supported many charities and organizations, giving of his time, talent, and energy to make Memphis a better place. In just a few weeks since this announcement, season ticket sales are on an upswing and the renewed energy into the program is gaining a lot of momentum. As he enters into this new chapter of his life, there is no question he will bring a lot of excitement to the city and the University of Memphis Basketball Program. 72 / May 2018 / 4Memphis

Beauty Within a Frame Dixon Brings Eugenia to Memphis By: Mary Katherine Thomas
“She was someone who understood the real beauty of things. She had this incredible innate feeling for art, music, poetry and dance, she was just special that way” said Director of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Kevin Sharp quoting John Singer Sargent. The Real Beauty: The artistic world of Eugenia Errázuriz was an exhibition focused on the life of Eugenia Huici Arguedas de Errázuriz (1860-1951). The contents of the exhibit included portraits of her, painted by notable painters such as American artist John Singer Sargent. Organized by Dixon Gallery and Gardens, the exhibit went on from January 28 to April 8, 2018. The inspiration for the exhibit sparked from the Dixon’s purchase in 2012 of the 1890 portrait of Eugenia Huici Arguedas de Errázuriz by Jacques-Émile Blanche in memory of a former Dixon director. Originally it had been thought that an exhibit on Jacques-Émile Blanche would be appropriate because he was its painter; however, as the Martha R. Robinson Curator at Dixon, Julie Pierotti, conducted the necessary research on Blanche, the woman in the painting named Eugenia Errázuriz came more into perspective. Pierotti found her to be extremely fascinating and one whose life was full of intriguing elements. The development of the exhibition was a joint venture, but Pierotti was the driving force in bringing The Real Beauty to Memphis. The works of art that made up the exhibit came from lenders in six different countries and three different continents; including Europe, North America and South America. There has been discussion of the The Real Beauty exhibit possibly being taken to Santiago, Chile, but for now it has only ever been shown at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. “The Real Beauty is a truly monumental exhibition for the Dixon to have organized”, said Director Kevin Sharp. The woman behind the art, Eugenia Huici Arguedas de Errázuriz, born November 15, 1860, was thought to be one of the most beautiful women in Chile during the late nineteenth, early twentieth centuries and in 1879 Eugenia married José Tomás Errázuriz Urmeneta. Three years later they moved to Paris where Eugenia became a friend and supporter to some and early twentieth centuries, including the well-known Pablo Picasso. Many of the artists who she came in contact with would have the opportunity to paint her portrait. Among these are Jacques-Émile Blanche, John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini. Eugenia favored simplicity when it came to both interior design and fashion; she inspired French interior designer Jean-Micheal Frank and fashion designer Coco Chanel with her minimalistic outlook. Eugenia Errázuriz, though widely unknown throughout the world, played a crucial role in lives of yet so many, and helped inspire individuals with her love and zeal for the arts. Known as “El sol de Santiago”, Eugenia has made an impact on the Memphis art community and the MidSouth. I was fortunate to have been able to visit The Real Beauty exhibit at the Dixon; in my research I found it t o be a beautiful display of Impressionist Art. I was entranced with the works of art and portraitas of Eugenia, and how Sargent was able to capture the essence of her “real beauty”. It was an honor to work with the Dixon on this article, I loved every minute of it! As Coco Chanel once said, “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance”.
