Eye-Popping Beauty at The Lash Lounge When Dallas Embry was on vacation in Orlando two years ago, she had some spare time one afternoon and decided to book an appointment for lash extensions. What she did not know was this simple decision would lead her to open The Lash Lounge in Memphis. “Getting those extensions was an experience I had never had before,” Dallas said. “The stylist asked me all these questions about lash length, curl, size, and I told her ‘I have no idea!’ I had never had so many great questions asked before when I got lash extensions. So, she showed me lots of pictures, and helped me choose a look that was right for me.” It was this attention to detail and the customized lashes that convinced her Memphis needed The Lash Lounge. She opened her luxury salon in 2021 during the height of the pandemic and business uncertainty. “Some people had a baby or adopted a puppy. I started a new business,” Dallas laughed. Memphis has embraced the specialty service, and Dallas was recently recognized with the Rising Star award from The Lash Lounge corporate team. A key difference with The Lash Lounge is the personalization for each client. Some women want very thick, full lashes to complement their makeup style while others prefer a more natural look. The stylists consult with each client to find the perfect lash look for them. The lash stylists are trained in a proprietary program that is unique and innovative; this education results in an exceptional, customized look for each client. Dallas and her team take pride in preserving the health and safety of their guests’ natural lashes. The application method, type, curl, and length of the extensions are all designed to protect and preserve the natural lash line while giving the guest the lash look they desire. Lash extensions are wonderful for special occasions such as weddings and special events, but they are also fabulous for simplifying your everyday beauty routine. As we all learned peeking out from behind a mask during the pandemic, making sure your eyes are accentuated is vital to expressing who you are. “Anyone from 18- to 75-years-old can benefit from lash extensions. It is an easy process that brings out the best in you,” Dallas said.

Coming up in South Memphis, Identity, Craig Brewer, The Grizzlies & more with Al Kapone By Cyrena Wages Photography by McKendree Walker

I

f you’re reading this, you likely have a similar fascination with this town as I do. It’s not just our home. It’s loveable in a way that surpasses geography and familiarity. Memphis is a feeling. Memphis feels like the groove to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness.” I think you’re only able to love as deeply as you’re able to embrace vulnerability and rawness, and so much of life is devoid of those two things. Memphis, however, is raw, honest, and real. It is a well, and if you’re like me, it’s become part of your identity. Alphonzo Bailey, “Al Kapone,” welcomed us into the studio April 21, in the heat of Grizzlies Playoffs Round 1. This particular day, he was working out of a space above the Memphis Black Arts Alliance, which resides in Historic Fire House No. 12, a one-truck station built in 1910 and converted in 1984 to the MBAA (founded by “Bennie” Nelson West as the city’s first regional arts and cultural organization nurturing artistic excellence and black heritage.) The fire pole once ran through the now vocal booth, but the building has been otherwise untouched. Al had just picked up the veggie plate from Peggy’s Healthy Soul Food off Crump. “Box Me In,” his latest single, was playing as we arrived and Al was sporting his custom “Whoop That Trick” Grizzlies tee (his single from Craig Brewer’s 2005 film Hustle & Flow), a black and gold satin jacket from Lansky’s, and his tinted Ray-Ban’s. Al Kapone is a star. But Al is real. He is Memphis. Al grew up in South Memphis, initially the Mississippi Blvd. and Walker area, not far from Stax Records. His family, mother Barbara and grandmother Louise, remember Al’s gravitation towards music beginning as early as two years old. He had an uncanny ability to understand and learn lyrics. He was listening to David Ruffin (The Temptations), Al Green, and soul music that morphed into a love for hip hop. “I fell in love with hip hop when I heard “Rapper’s Delight” - the look, the graffiti, DJ’ing, all of it.” Al described his childhood as “a typical story of coming up in the ‘hood.” He commented, “As a kid, even though we were living in poverty, I didn’t know it. I knew I didn’t have some name brands I wanted, and I knew it was a money problem, but I didn’t really feel it. I had a community. We had fun doing typical things like being outside with friends, talking about music. It wasn’t until later, teenage years, when the crack era hit, that I started realizing the gritty parts of coming up in the ‘hood. I started witnessing things you shouldn’t be witnessing at that age.” He recalls his mother’s advice as he grew older, “She gave me jewels, jewels to be safe. She’d say, ‘don’t think. If you feel like bad stuff is about to happen, you need to leave.’ That saved me a lot of times.” Barbara taught Al to trust his internal guide, maybe the best lesson one could receive.

JULY / AUGUST 2022

Al got his first job in 4th grade, throwing papers for the Memphis PressScimitar and the Commercial Appeal. By 6th grade, he was delivering groceries for the Lauderdale Sundry, owned by a guy named Ship. “Ship was the first time I experienced how a man handles things. He was a first father figure for me.” With a robust voice and charm only Al could deliver, he enthusiastically reenacts how Ship taught him to mop. “He didn’t play no games. He owned his own store. He taught me that was something to strive for.” With his co-workers at the Lauderdale Sundry he formed his first musical project, The Pee Wee Emcees. Throughout the years, he’d put new groups together depending on what neighborhood he lived in. “People followed me to find out the latest in hip hop. The only birthday present I ever asked for from my mom was two things…a chocolate cake, and enough money to go to Boss Ugly Bob’s Record Store and buy whatever the latest rap tape was. She delivered every time.” He kept his finger on the pulse of hip hop from the east to the west coast, and it all started to come together when he was exposed to underground projects surfacing out of Memphis, prior to the solidification of the Memphis rap scene. “All the sudden I was hearing songs like ‘Samurai Suzuki’ by the M-Team (Boo and Archie Mitchell) and going to rap battles in the city where I’d see Coast 2 Coast - Jazze Pha and his brother. Jazze had this one move...,” Al gets up and enthusiastically re-lives this, “He’d beat box and then spin on his head and the crowd would go wild. He’d win every time,” he says with laughter and amazement. We segued into Al’s writing process. He has continually played tug of war with what he’s wanted to express as an artist and what his early audience expected of him. He wanted to write about more than street life. “I can talk about the streets because I’m from this environment – the shooting, the drugs, but I want to talk about the reasons behind that. And I want to talk about everyday life, too. People are catching the bus to go to work, going to church, going to school. The street is just one aspect. I want to talk about how the family comes together for the holidays. I am a writer. I can write about anything. But the audience was thinking they bought an Al Kapone record to hear something gangsta, and they were disappointed.” “Gangsta Rap,” originally called “Reality Rap,” emerged in the mid to late ‘80s. Al acknowledged the merit of some of the artist’s in this movement. We discussed the “bravado” that this format could understandably provide for many marginalized people, but that ultimately audiences often cling to it in order to hide from their own vulnerability. “People are scared of vulnerability. I want to write about life, black life, human life. Not everybody living in the hood is living the street life.” Al recalls the Hustle & Flow period of time, when he found success on a new level. He and filmmaker Craig Brewer (The Poor & Hungry, Black Snake Moan), connected many years before officially collaborating. “We were both just independent artists hustling and trying to get our work heard.” Brewer told Kapone of the film he’d make one day, Hustle & Flow, but the call didn’t come until several years later. The film was finally happening, Three 6 Mafia was involved, and Brewer was still looking for a song for one particular character. Most importantly, he needed it in one day. “I couldn’t fumble this ball,” Al says. He gathered character insight from Terrence Howard (“Djay”), collaborated with

Niko Lyras (Cotton Row Music), and pitched the title track “Hustle & Flow” to Brewer and John Singleton (producer) in less than 24 hours. “When they heard it, they wanted more.” They bit on “Whoop That Trick” and “Get Crunk, Get Buck” that same day in the studio. “I’m sitting there thinking, I get another song? Where am I right now? Is this really happening to me?” If you’ve been awake in Memphis in the last few months, you’ve experienced the rush of the new Grizzlies anthem “Whoop That Trick.” I asked how seeing a forum of 18k people singing his words made him feel. “Excited, happy for Memphis, happy for the connectedness. It’s as if we were in the gladiator days and everybody’s chanting ‘get em’ in unification with each other. Memphis (as a city) is always viewed as the underdog, but we’re David and you’re Goliath and we’re slaying you again,” he says laughing. Al wants to see growth in the Memphis arts scene. He hopes to see different musical genres being celebrated and different art forms being valued. “We need that exposure so the younger kids can see there’s more than sports or street rap to be successful.” He points to Lil Buck and Memphis Jookin as a prime example of varieties of art getting their deserved notoriety. What’s next for Al Kapone? “I’m fusing different styles, what I’ve been doing forever, but fully embracing diversity. I’m fusing Memphis rap sounds with soul, blues, and a little rock.” In closing, I asked Al what advice he would have for a young Memphis kid wanting to do what he’s done. He answered, “Make sure you’re doing something you feel true and passionate about, because that’s what’s going to keep you strong when things are not going right. Secondly, it’s alright to listen to some people that have done it before you and try and learn from their mistakes. Have integrity. It’s not all about what you can get from someone, but keep in mind you need to give, too. You need to show love and be a source of inspiration.” “All of the rumors, I’m shaking it off. I’m gonna do me, I’m gonna stay free. I heard a voice, I’m gonna follow my call…You can say what you want, but you can’t box me in.” – “Box Me In,” -Al Kapone Listen to “Box Me In” featuring Singa B on all platforms.

SUCCESS IN THE CITY

LESLIE MURPHY By Cyrena Wages Photography by McKendree Walker

L

eslie Murphy is known as the owner of Murphy Maude Interiors, powerhouse full-service interior architecture and design firm, with sister textile company Mable Originals (which collaborates with local artists to create bespoke pieces, textiles, fashion and furniture products). Founded in 2013, Murphy Maude Interiors has transformed from a one-woman run boutique business to an internationally published 20 employee firm servicing Memphis and Nashville (employing an all-female staff apart from their beloved warehouse managers Mike and Spike). But today we wanted to peel the onion a bit further, one that has proven to be layered, dynamic, artful, and impactful. An Alabama native, Murphy found love for art young, born with an undeniable inclination towards self-expression. She grew up painting, drawing, and cutting out Southern Living magazine clippings to “build her dream house.” She moved to New York early in her career and found herself working for Columbia University, living near the Chelsea Art District. After immersing herself in all that Chelsea had to offer and traveling to cultural centers of the world, life brought her to Memphis in 2009. She left the world of academia and dove into her background in art and passion for design. We find many things fascinating about Leslie Murphy, and her art-forward approach to business and life is just one of them. Enjoy as we go behind the curtain and get to know the woman behind the work. What were you like as a young girl growing up in Madison, AL? I spent most of my time on a farm with my grandparents Mable and Frank Joe. We had an orchard and it was an idyllic life that I didn’t fully appreciate at the time. I was an artist and a free-spirited, wildflower child. I loved to play dress-up in my Granny’s square-dancing skirts and trouble through the creeks and fields. It was wonderful and Mable made me feel like I was loved without question. What is MMI’s unique strength in this field? We look at everything through the lens of art. MMI and our Mable product line are used to connect people back to their environment in a way that matters to them. For example, we are creating a wall mural out of a family of 5’s original artwork for their art room. We are curating it and editing through our in-house art department to make something that is truly custom and really means something in their home. What sparked the idea for Mable Originals and where did the name come from? As mentioned above, Mable was my maternal Grandmother. We shared a very close bond. She taught me all I know about nature, goodness, simplicity, and joy. She was also a self-taught artist in her own right. I have always wanted to get back to the heart of art and creativity in my business. I wanted to find a way to serve our clients and one day other designers through custom, art-based products and this textile venture was it!

Dress fabric from Mable Textile Collection Leslie’s grandmother Mable

What is something most people don’t know about you? I am actually an introvert. I get most of my energy and best ideas from being alone. What advice do you have for a young person coming up in your line of business? Go to school and learn the tools and programs like Revit and get licensed! If not, and you choose the alternative path that I did, hire the best technical people in the business to support you! And do a badass internship to really understand how this business works. It is a joy and a gift but it is very hard work. Know that what you are signing up for is not a fluffy job. What is your wish for the art community of Memphis? To thrive! We all benefit from a thriving, healthy, well-funded creative community. I hope through Mable we can show local artists how to further commercialize their art and to carry that forward to the rest of the world one day in the form of textile products, like wallpaper, fabrics, and art prints. You get one last dance on the dancefloor at Earnestine & Hazel’s— what’s playing on the Jukebox? Bill Withers “Use Me Up”! Easy one! JULY / AUGUST 2022

Building Momentum: Memphis Music Initiative Mission: Memphis Music Initiative invests in youth through transformative music engagement, creating equitable opportunities for Black and brown youth in Memphis. Year founded: 2014 (though 2015 marked the official start of programming)

Website: memphismusicinitiative.org

Number of people served: 2,500 people through our programs and an additional ~7,000 through the programs we serve Annual budget: $3,204,552 By Kevin Dean Photo by Christy Calvin

M

emphis music has shaped American culture, served as the soundtrack to social movements past and present, and continues to connect us into the future. Although Memphis is known internationally for its legacy of arts and music, young people, particularly Black and brown youth in under-resourced communities, are experiencing declining access to quality music engagement programs—a truth that has only been underscored by the ongoing pandemic. In Memphis, there simply aren’t adequate internship and apprenticeship opportunities for young people to gain professional skills and make career networks in the creative sector. Memphis Music Initiative was created when research revealed that the city had less accessible music engagement for youth than similar cities of its size and cultural importance. Memphis Music Initiative invests in Memphis’ young people through direct programs that connect youth to high-quality in-school, after-school, and summertime music engagement opportunities, and by providing grants and capacity building resources to grassroots and community music programs serving Black and brown youth. These programs help strengthen the local arts ecosystem and ensure that Memphis’ young people always have access to high-quality arts programming. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic presented new challenges for the organization, but it also taught them to identify creative, new solutions. Engaging virtual technology allowed Memphis Music Initiative to partner in 2021 for the first time with six Historically Black Colleges

and Universities (HBCUs) to hold a day of virtual music auditions for musically gifted high school students from 12 school music programs across Memphis. Over the course of one day, band and choral directors representing Rust College, Jackson State University, Tennessee State University, Fisk University, LeMoyne-Owen College, and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff heard vocal and instrumental performances from 24 student musicians from schools MMI works with across the city. "Memphis’ young people brought their A-game," says Amber Hamilton, Executive Director of Memphis Music Initiative. "Following the auditions, all 24 students who auditioned received partial or full college scholarship offers. We held the auditions this year as well. Twenty-three students from 11 schools participated in band or vocal auditions. Of the students who reported back, at least five were offered scholarships. We can’t wait for next year’s auditions!" The organization encourages young people to become creatively immersed in their past, critically engaged in the present, and more able to determine their future through the power of music and arts. They aim to create a classroom in which young people recognize and acknowledge the challenges of current systems, yet feel equipped with skills, agency, and creativity. We can guarantee you'll be hearing more from Memphis Music Initiative's talented students! Kevin Dean is CEO of the Momentum Nonprofit Partners. He received his Ed.D in Organizational Learning and Leadership from Vanderbilt University in 2021. JULY / AUGUST 2022

Ghana: A Cool & Unusual Contrast of Flora Text and photos by Faye Brown Horticulturist, Memphis Botanic Garden

I

f you’ve had a chance to visit Memphis Botanic Garden since the beginning of May, your eye has likely been caught by a striking showcase of unusual plants as you enter the Visitors Center. In this horseshoe-shaped bed, we’re excited to share some of the rarest specimens from our collection - many of which have never been featured in a public display. This boldly colorful installation, which also includes a series of container plantings, was designed for the 2022 Memphis in May International Festival Salute to Ghana, and will remain on display through the summer. The selected plants originate from Africa and Madagascar, with most from the region of West Africa where Ghana is located. Though Ghana is a fairly small country in terms of square mileage - about the same size as the state of Oregon - its coastal location on the African continent includes multiple biomes, such as savannah grassland, tropical rainforest, and desert plateau. You’ll see this wide range represented in this fantastic display of flora. Additionally, we’ve included plants of significant agricultural and medicinal importance to the region. You may be drawn first toward a carpet of crimson and gold Kniphofia, which is also known as Red Hot Poker. This fun flower features whimsical wands waving high above tufts of slender, spiky foliage. Punctuating this section is the graceful Royal Poinciana tree. While the delicate, fern-like foliage of this tree is lovely on its own - the large, late summer blooms of scarlet will be the real show stoppers. Next up, you’ll see a sculptural element of palm trunks serving as a weighty backdrop for the wow factor of a towering trio of velvet leaf kalanchoe. The lamb-soft leaves of this otherworldly specimen contrast sharply with the jagged trunks which hold them aloft. Chances are, you’ve never seen a kalanchoe quite this colossal. The cast of actors surrounding the kalanchoe are

comparatively diminutive in size; however, they provide just as much interest. Fronting a sea of ebony and emerald elephant ears you’ll find our first featured euphorbia: Speckled Milk Bush. The color combo of this succulent, featuring chartreuse foliage flocked with magenta - is nothing short of fetching. Still, I’m sure you’ll agree that Speckled Milk Bush’s neighbor, though it sports a more monochromatic palette - takes the award hands down for best common name: Leaf of Life. Continue around the arch of the horseshoe, and you’ll encounter a shadier area dominated by multiple cultivars of a plant we’ve all come to know as Sansevieria, aka, snake plant, or mother in laws tongue (though technically the classification has changed, and these beauties now fall into the Dracaena category, along with favorites like corn plant and dragon plant.) Our vast collection of Sansevieria was graciously donated to the Garden over twenty years ago, and they’ve been lovingly cared for since by our horticultural staff. We think you’ll be amazed at how the same plant can take on so many different forms: short, cylindrical tangles; upright stacked fans; tree forms in miniature; lengthy sabers with razor sharp tips; and, the aptly named Whale Tail - an impressive specimen for sure. Before entering the Visitors Center, be sure to take a moment to admire the various Euphorbia in our large container arrangements. You’ll easily recognize the spindly Pencil Cactus, but in the opposite planter you’ll see its rare relative, the Flat Pencil Cactus. Adjacent pots provide an extreme textural contrast, like the undulating spikes of Euphorbia nivulia and a menacingly massive Crown of Thorns. NOTE: This special display bed is located in front of the Garden's Visitors Center and can be seen without purchasing Garden admission.

ERLING JENSEN,

More than a Restaurant By Lesley Harris Colvett Photography by Mark Ramirez

JULY / AUGUST 2022

T

he name Erling Jensen evokes many wonderful things: decades of fine dining in our city; and a cozy, rather romantic, restaurant that we go to for memorable dinners and special occasions. Erling Jensen the person is very warm, kind, funny, and philanthropic. It was a real treat sitting down with Erling and his wife of nine years, Jaquila. Erling grew up in Denmark, and his culinary passion started early in life. “I started cooking at a very young age - age 15 - at a hotel in my hometown of Frederikshavn, Denmark, peeling onions and potatoes, and I went to school for four years.” After training at a four-year culinary school and serving his apprenticeship at the Hotel Jutlandia in Frederikshavn, Denmark, Erling worked at the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C. for two years, then he went back home to Denmark. “In 1983, I took a big jump,” Erling says. That “jump” was coming to the United States, and staying. Erling’s first landing spot was Miami. When I asked Erling how he got to Miami, he said “by an airplane,” with a laugh! But he did answer. “I read an article in a Danish magazine about a Danish Chef / Restaurateur in Miami, named Jorgen Moller. I really admired him, so I wrote him a letter, we talked, and he invited me to join him in Miami as Executive Chef at the Prince Hamlet Restaurant in Miami, Florida.”

Erling has had tremendous success over the last 25 years as Executive Chef / Owner of Erling Jensen The Restaurant. He is living his dream. “I would say the last 10 years have been the best time for me at the restaurant, mostly because of Jaquila and my son Blake. I have everything now,” he says. Jaquila and Erling met at the restaurant. She had been in retail management in Memphis, and then did a whole career change to go to culinary school in Hyde Park, New York. One of the prerequisites of culinary school was to have at least six months of restaurant experience where they made at least 75% of the food. After graduating culinary school with a degree in baking and pastry arts, Jaquila came back to Memphis and worked at Erling Jensen’s, as one of the pastry chefs, as well as making custom cakes on the side. Having owned a restaurant, in its original location for nearly 26 years, Erling notes the atmosphere and concept has remained the same, but it has slightly evolved over the years with the times. “We are fine dining, but gentlemen don’t necessarily have to wear a jacket. We have loosened it up a little bit, but we still strive to deliver that excellent service in an elegant setting,” Jaquila says. “When people are coming here to celebrate it should be special,” Erling says. And when Erling serves his food at charity events it is really special too!

In 1989, Erling moved to Memphis when he got hired by Glenn Hays who owned La Tourelle, which was located in Midtown at 2146 Monroe. Then in 1996, Erling opened Erling Jensen The Restaurant at 1044 S. Yates Road in East Memphis. Even if you have not yet eaten at Erling Jensen the restaurant, chances are that you have enjoyed Erling’s food at a charity event where he has donated his food for guests to enjoy. “I like Memphis, Memphis has been really good to me, and I am giving back to Memphis as much as I can.” Erling says. For instance, just hours after I interviewed Erling he was doing a benefit for the James Beard Foundation. Other non-profit organizations/events he supports are Special Olympics, Madonna Learning Center, Meat Me in Memphis event put on by Monogram Foods, Le Bon Appetit, and Memphis Food & Wine Festival, to name a few. “It’s a natural evolution of things, to participate in these great events that organizations, other chefs, and people in Memphis put on,” Jaquila says. Erling and Jaquila say that the community supports them, so it is important for them to support the community. Erling supports charity event auctions by providing gift certificates to Erling Jensen The Restaurant, and he has even offered himself at some auctions. “They auctioned off me too,” Erling says, as he has been a featured auction item to prepare a dinner for 14 in a private home. “I like those dinners, going to people’s houses and shooting from the hip, having a fun time, and raising good money for good causes.”

MARK SANDFOSS By Cyrena Wages Photography by McKendree Walker

S

omeone told me once that trying to keep a creative person from free self-expression is like trying to hold a beach ball under water. That’s one of the many lovely anecdotes that come to mind when I think of Mark Sandfoss. Born and raised in Kentucky, Sandfoss received a BS in Wildlife Biology from Murray State University, a MS in Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University, and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Florida. Having spent years in NYC, Colombia, and Argentina, he now resides in Memphis where he is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the conservation and research department of the Memphis Zoo. He is objectively accomplished as an intellectual and researcher, but what brings us to this feature today is his wild and unmatchable propensity for fashion and design. I’ve gone out on the town and watched him dazzle crowds of strangers; a conversation starter, thought provoker, a photo opportunity, a rockstar. If only we all allowed our insides to be so authentically displayed in our exteriors, what a colorful world it might be. Let’s dig in. Tell me your origin story. I grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. I had a wonderful childhood of running around the neighborhood and playing sports. I have a younger brother and two older sisters. Has your hometown and your travels had a significant impact on you? MARK’S NUDIE-INSPIRED SUIT Hand-sewn mirror in diamond shapes slither around the suit, inspired by the diamondback rattlesnake. 64

JULY / AUGUST 2022

Definitely. As someone who grew up in an environment without a lot of exposure to

art in Kentucky, I did not feel qualified to create “art”. However, once I traveled more and was exposed to a fashion capital like NYC, I noticed that people were people everywhere, and no one is more or less qualified to dress themselves than anyone else. South America was inspiring because of all the colors and fabrics and an observable shift in cultural values. Colombia helped to break my ideas of cultural norms and what should and should not be done. Also, as a North American I already stuck out, and this gave me freedom to dress as I pleased since there was no hiding anyway. What first sparked your interest in fashion? Initially, popular culture. For example, Michael Jordan had his own shoes and James Bond always wore a tuxedo. I also saw the “power” of clothing when I was forced to dress a certain way at Catholic elementary school. Similarly, once I got to middle and high school, I noticed a social hierarchy existed. And the “cool” kids wore what was considered the “cool” clothing. Suddenly, the quality of the clothes was based on the quality of the person wearing them more than the quality of the clothing itself. I often experimented with clothes I found appealing, but it was difficult to buy and wear the clothes I wanted because of social pressures. However, I never stopped trying. For example, I bleach dyed my own hair when Eminem showed up and once shaved my head for a soccer tournament as a middle schooler. Also, I wore huge JNCO jeans as a roller-blader teen and had a mean bowl cut!

What are you wanting to communicate most to people through how you clothe yourself ? I think the biggest message is that life is short and will be as meaningful as we make it. We should do all things with intention including how we dress. I want to see more people have fun and be expressive with their outfits. Two troublesome things I hear often from others are: 1) “I could never pull that off” – which is false because no one but your own fear is stopping you from being more expressive, and 2) “what’s the occasion for your outfit?” – life is precious, and I reject the idea that there should be a special occasion to give me a reason to dress in a way that makes me feel special. I think others should do the same. Favorite record of all time? This is an insane question. With no real answer. Growing up in the 90s, music was less accessible as it is today. I had relatively few CD’s and MTV had just started, so I listened to a limited amount of music over and over again. Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” was the anthem for 90s youth that felt powerless and invisible. And the Outkast record “Stankonia” made me feel the way I wanted to feel. That record made me cool. I mean “So fresh, so clean,” that’s the dream!! Both records hold up today.

I didn’t start making things until later in life when I realized 1) I had a strong sense of aesthetic that was OK to pursue, and 2) I could not afford a lot of the high fashion clothing that I liked, but maybe I could make something similar? That may seem like a radical thought to some but felt very natural to me. Is there an overlap between your profession and your creative inclination? I don’t think scientists get enough credit for their creativity. To be a scientist requires the creation of an original research question that no one has ever asked before, and then create a way to test those questions in a scientifically rigorous manner. Experiments often have problems that require interesting solutions to challenging problems. This is a very creative process in my opinion. Where do you draw current style inspiration? These days I primarily get inspired by artists that I appreciate (painters and graffiti artists). However, now that I have become more confident as a creative person, I feel more comfortable pursuing my own ideas. I get inspiration from any and all things – movement, nature, politics, random thoughts, etc…I also try to highlight fashion designs originating from non-US cultures. There is a rich human history of patterns and fabrics, garment design, and associated gender norms that rarely get communicated to a wide enough audience.

THE DISSERTATION Inspired by his dissertation defense, Mark’s hand-painted suit tells the story of two snake populations fighting for survival. Gator shoes were also created by Mark.

1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

The Pontiac Firebird was debuted in 1967 to compete with an earlier General Motors car, the Chevrolet Camaro; it was an immediate success. Designed in the tradition of European road racers by using colors to distinguish one country from another - American vehicles were white with blue stripes. This is one of only 697 Trans Am Firebirds built in 1969, and is considered the holy grail of this car class. Dress, purse, and necklace from Kittie Kyle

Art events

"The Watchers" by John Roberts at David Lusk Gallery

Summertime in Memphis means finding air conditioning or at least shade whenever possible. Blessed are the quiet and cool museums and galleries! Traditional performing arts seasons run September through April and usually take some sort of break. People vacation…including singers, musicians, directors, and others. At the same time, crafters and painters are busy in studios getting ready for fall crafts fairs or gallery shows. But it is quieter and that is not a bad thing. When the world came back from Covid, it came back with an anxious determination to make up for lost time with as many events, weddings, exhibitions, and performances as might be crammed into a few short weeks. A little break before the busy fall season ahead is probably a good thing. -Ken Hall
