So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” In early August, I received an email about an advertisement that had run in our magazine about a program called Making Marriage Make Sense. At that point in my summer, I was being consumed with stress from the usual suspects: work, family, and mostly, my relationship. The last thing that made sense to me was marriage, and so I took the email as a sign from God to enroll into the program at Highpoint Church and then later relay my story in the magazine. Throughout the eight week course, Andy Savage reminded the class that one must “choose us” every day. There is no celestial call or magical alarm that goes off, screaming, “This is the one! Now you will magically do right by this union!” Choosing your partner takes complete selflessness, and while it takes maturity and an iron-clad will, the benefits one reaps from a lifelong, God-centered marriage is unsurmountable. My publisher Jim Walker remembers something his mentor Bill Simmons said about marriage: “You have to keep on keeping on.” My mother, likewise, often tells me that love is a choice, and you must choose it every day. That does not mean all of these long-term successful relationships have not seen some turbulence and trials. I believe that it means battling through the mucky trenches in honor of your choice you made is the most righteous daily win (didn’t Joan Jett say that “love is a battlefield?). Making Marriage Make Sense was a life-altering experience for me, but not because I got hitched shortly thereafter. On the contrary, we became single for a spell. I recognized some very critical red flags about me as a partner. I can be selfish. During conflict, I can sometimes dishonor my partner. I allowed myself

to not be chosen, and in return, I had chosen no one but myself. I had let anxiety, insecurities, stressors and pride dictate how I was going to treat and be treated by a partner. Honestly, neither of us committed to putting our partner’s needs first. Selfishness is the ultimate enemy, but I had taken steps in changing that by taking the course and considering its principles with seriousness. And I started to really observe relationships around me. As we age, life struggles can compound, problems multiply, and frustrations mount. Adults twice my age have twice my stress and moments of sorrow under their belt. Jim’s daughter battled cancer, a parent’s nightmare. He and his wife Susan had very high tension at the time, but they both chose to fight together, not against each other. Jim never escaped to duck camp or the golf course, and Susan never sought comfort from anyone but her God and her husband. I can attest that the two are stronger for their struggles, and I admire the way they, like my parents and other couples I esteem, cleave together. Ephesians 5:28 tells us “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself.” That selflessess should be a twoway street and is the ultimate goal. As marriage is a perfect idea divinely designed for imperfect people, actively pursuing ways to be a better spouse is a highly recommended way to start married life right. And while I am not currently qualified to speak on being married, I believe that these experiences have allowed me to set myself up for success. I am dating again, and I believe I am a more agreeable partner becuase of MMMS. It is my heartfelt wish for every newlywed that they find success and selfless love, and they nurture it daily.

A PRAYER FOR NEWLYWEDS Father, we pray that their marriage will be filled with friendship, joy, and love. May their life together embody warmth and affection, with the deepest love and intimacy between them. Falling in love is not a choice, but staying in love is. It is a choice that requires renewal day after day, year after year, lifetime after lifetime. Love, deep love, is simple. It is a simple choice between kindness and generosity, or blame and criticism, moment to moment. Our choices become our habits. When we make kindness and generosity our choice, our vision becomes clear — we see with clear eyes, the good intent behind actions, the pain behind harsh words, and the fear behind untruthful speech. Father, we pray You help them make this choice day after day. Amen.

When Barrett Baber competed on NBC’s “The Voice” this season, he infused his country sound with soul, Memphis soul. He finished the hit show in mid-December and is working to fulfill his dream that began just across the Mississippi River in Marion, Arkansas, a western suburb of Memphis. One of the first songs Barrett performed on national television was “Walking In Memphis,” and he said that performance was a tribute to a place he will always call home. “Memphis, the city played a key role in my sound and my upbringing as an artist and where the soul comes from inside of me vocally. Memphis and the Delta region of Arkansas had a lot to do with that,” he said. Barrett may have strode onto the national stage overnight, but he has dreamed of chasing the neon rainbow since high school. He honed his singing skills in the high school choir and the First Baptist Church where his dad served as pastor in Marion, and then on a vocal scholarship at Ouachita Baptist University where he majored in music. But before graduating, the pull of Music Row lured Barrett to Nashville. ”What people were seeing on the show might have looked like an overnight success, but the truth is, it’s been a 15+ year journey for me at this point.” “When I went to college, I taught myself how to play guitar. I started writing songs and gigging out wherever I could make a buck. ‘The Voice’ was the culmination of

15 years of really hard work and grinding away, trying to hone my craft and get better at what I do. It’s been a long journey for sure!” By the time Barrett had reached his early-30’s, he was married, raising two young kids, teaching high school in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and realizing the clock was ticking on the opportunity to be a country artist. So he spent the past couple of years preparing and polishing his “package” as a singersongwriter in one last push for a country record deal in Nashville. If it didn’t work out, at least he had tried and he could be content as songwriter, writing music for other artists to perform. “I’m getting a little older, and I thought, ‘well, I’ll just try to write songs for other people and make my way in music that way.’ I had sort of given up on the dream of being on the artist side. But I then decided that I would try one more final push to go get a record deal. I kinda went all-in with my EP “Falling Again” project, with the idea that this is my last chance to make this happen. And worse case is that I’ll get a publishing deal and be a songwriter.” Just as his EP was released, producers from “The Voice” came calling and asked him to audition. Not the exact route to success he was diligently plotting, but he and his manager decided that it was worth a shot. That decision proved to be a good one, landing Barrett a chance to work with country music superstar, Blake Shelton, and earning him a spot in the show’s finale, singing before millions of viewers. It was his commitment to his own style and a new country sound, blending the

Memphis soul sound with Nashville’s current country sound. “That’s really what I wanted to do on the show was present myself as a new thing - sort of a throwback but a new thing at the same time. The way country music is now, it’s not quite as soulful, and it’s more pop-edge driven. And that’s great, and people love that and connect with that. But I wanted to do a different thing - a new sub-genre of country music, soul-country. It’s an idea that is really taking off that it can be really soulful and have a lot of meaning to it. We’ve seen that in the last few weeks with Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton’s performance on the CMAs of the classic country song, ‘Tennessee Whiskey.’ When you put a soulful vocal on a country track, something magical happens and that’s what I tried to do with every single performance on The Voice.” By far the oldest contestant in the Top 12, Barrett used his experience both as a musician and as a former teacher to encourage and mentor the younger participants on the show. He described that for a young artist “it’s easy to get discouraged and think that the only time you have to make it is right now, and if it doesn’t happen right now that it never will. But I’m living proof that that’s not necessarily the case; that this thing is a journey and you need years and years of work and development to become the best artist you can be.” What was it like for Barrett to work so closely with Blake Shelton? “I have an immense amount of respect for Blake Shelton, of course as an artist but also now as a human being. People spend a lot of time trying to figure out who he’s dating and what he’s doing, and the funny thing is, I think he doesn’t get enough credit for the kind of person he is on the inside,” Barrett said. Blake inspired him with exactly what he needed to continue pursuing his dream. “It really shows with the amount of time he takes to nurture starving artists such as myself. For me, I didn’t necessarily need a lot of coaching and detail on “here’s how you sing it,’ but what I needed was validation. And he gave me that. He has a really good way of understanding what an artist needs to reach their full potential. For me, I needed a guy who is operating at the absolute peak of success in the world that I would like to operate in to look me in the eye and tell me I’m good enough and that I belong. That validation is what I needed to finally let go of some self-doubt and things I’ve struggled with for years. Wondering if I’m actually good enough to do this, and he recognized that. It was a really a magical thing for me to get to spend time with a guy like that and for him to take an interest in who I am and take interest in seeing me succeed.” Barrett is sorting out his options for that record deal he has dreamed of, and he’s being diligent in making the moves that are good career choices to make the most of this opportunity. He is also excited to play shows soon in both Marion and Memphis, to personally say “thank you” for all the support and votes he received from the Mid-South. “Memphis really runs deep in my heart and it always will. I just love the city of Memphis, and I really credit it and it runs into my DNA; it is who I am.” And who Barrett Baber is is one soul-full rising country star. With new owners and a new attitude, the Memphis Open looks to restore the lustre as it celebrates 40 years By Jerry Solomon In August of 2015 year, our company, GF Sports, bought the Memphis Open presented by ServiceMaster. And while it isn't exactly the same as the 'ballboy coming home to buy the pro team', it shares some of the elements. I started my sports career working for the Colgate Palmolive Company managing their sponsorship of the men's tennis tour. That job brought me to many stops on the circuit including Memphis where I met and worked with the likes of Billy Dunavant, Tommy Buford and Mac Winker. Later I personally represented Memphis Open champions Ivan Lendl and Michael Chang and our company, ProServ, represented many others including Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Brad Gilbert and Gene Mayer. The Chairman of ProServ, Donald Dell was ever present in Memphis working with Mr. Dunavant, negotiating television coverage and doing the television commentary. So while this is not exactly a homecoming, we have a lot of history in Memphis, remember the Memphis Open (or back then the US Indoor Championships) as being a great setting for the players and fans and have lofty goals to reinvigorate this gem of the Mid-South.

Professional tennis has changed dramatically in the 40 year history of the Memphis Open. Consider: ...in 1976 guys like Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall ruled the court. They measured no more than 5'8". Earlier this year we announced a long term association with 18 year old Reilly Opelka, the current Wimbledon junior champion. He is 6'11". ...the draw for the tournament in 1976 had 8 players from outside the United States. The 2015 draw had 19. ...the winner of the 2015 event earned $106,000. The total prize money in 1976 was $60,000. ...there were 146 members of the United Nation in 1976. Today there are 210 members of the International Tennis Federation making tennis the second most played sport on the planet. The list goes on and on. And the presentation of tennis has changed as well. Going to tournaments today is often not just about the tennis. There are culinary experiences and video game lounges and live musical entertainment, meet and greet opportunities, legends matches and more. And keeping pace with exotic cities from around the world--be it Singapore, Dubai or Rio de Janeiro--is not for the faint of heart. So when we had a chance to become reunited with the Memphis Open, we knew we had our work cut out for us. And while we plan to remake certain aspects of the Memphis Open, professional tennis is not all about the side shows that can be put around the tennis. It is about community pride, grassroots development, charitable contributions and inspiring our youth. We don't think there is a city in tennis that does these things better than Memphis. So while we will update the look and feel of the tournament, we will also emphasize and renew the values that are part of Memphis and what has given the Memphis Open a 40 year storyline. And what a storyline it has been: a hall of fame list of champions starting with Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, the entry point in careers for stars like Andre Agassi and Michael Chang, groundbreaking

sponsorships with companies like Regions, Kroger and now ServiceMaster and annually the place where Memphians would come to 'see and be seen'. Over the last couple of months our team has sat with dozens of people from Memphis and beyond who have told stories of their fond memories of attending the Memphis Open with friends and family. Many said they grew up with the tournament and remembered coming with their parents every year. Several proudly told us that they had never missed a final. Great stuff and the kind of stories that become part of the city's folklore. I know our staff has been energized by the history of the tournament and the challenge of bringing it up to date after some absentee ownership issues. Personally, I know I have been moved by some of the stories I have heard and even more so by the passion that comes through when talking to people like Kevin Kane, Steve Ehrhardt, Julie Kosten, Bruce Hopkins, Allen Morgan and Valerie Morris. That said, never have I been more moved than when we took a tour of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital which has long been a beneficiary of the tournament. What a place. And what great people. As we get ready for the 40th Anniversary edition of the Memphis Open, we do so with great anticipation and the knowledge that we have big shoes to fill if we want to see the tournament 'rise again' and make the people of Memphis proud. But we, along with Memphians that talk about civic pride, charitable contribution, youth sports and corporate leadership, are ready for the challenge. As our slogan says, "the love returns" this year to the Memphis Open. I hope you will too. It promises to be a fun week that you won't want to miss.

2: What can a bride start doing to improve her skin/make her glow 9-6 months out?

Weight loss, Laser Hair Removal, and Facial Peel Series: Most of our services will produce amazing results beginning a year out or even 9-6 months out from the wedding date. We suggest if you are planning on losing weight for your wedding day, you should begin that process with one of our weight loss programs anywhere from 6 months to a year from the event. The closer you get to the wedding date, the more stressed you are, so it’s smart to think ahead and lose the desired weight you want and learn the skills to keep it off, rather than try and lose a stressful 10 pounds in a week right before your wedding. We have several options for weight loss including our Ideal Protein diet, our HCG diet program and Lipovite/ Vitachrome/ B-12 energy shots that greatly assist in speeding up your metabolism. Laser hair removal services are also something you consider doing at least 6 months in advance. The number of sessions required for permanent hair reduction whether it be for the chin, bikini area, etc. range per person (usually between 6-12 sessions) and are performed every 6-8 weeks depending on the area, so you want to give yourself plenty of time to see the lasting results. For the bride who is trying to eliminate acne, sun spots or just to achieve flawless skin before her wedding day, we recommend they begin a series of peels or facials approximately 6-9 months before the big day. Injectables like Botox and Xeomin are used to relax the lines in the forehead and crow’s feet, around the eye area as well as the stubborn crease in between the brow area. You can see dramatic results within a few days! Fillers will help achieve a fuller lip as well as treat facial folds around the mouth and produce cheek volume. You should allow the filler a couple of weeks to take full effect which will give your skin more of a natural appearance. Days before the wedding you should have several services booked: Your spray tan should be done approximately 2-3 days before hand. Do not forget to exfoliate before you get your spray, and do not put any lotion on before you go! Any waxing services should also be done approximately 3-7 days before your wedding. We love the treatment right before a wedding. 3: What is a product/procedure that you have available that a bride may not know she needs but definitely does? Most people don’t realize how much they need medical grade skin care in their at home regimen. Those products, combined with a series of facials/peels, dramatically improve current skin conditions and prevent new ones from occurring. Even if you think you have great skin now, you will be shocked at what can pop up over a year, a summer, or even overnight! Dry skin, sun damage, acne, rosacea, fine lines: each one is an effect from stress, uva/uvb rays and even poor diet. Don’t chance it on your big day with a huge blemish appearing the night before your wedding! Be proactive and take preventative measures ahead of time. 4: What are your 3 best tips and tricks of the trade for wedding day makeup? First, have a facial 1-3 days before so your face is hydrated and your makeup looks polished. Secondly, wear a face primer under your foundation or pressed based powder to help correct imperfections and to allow foundation to wear longer. Lastly, don’t forget waterproof mascara!

The last point is crucial in his ministry to young men, basically exclaiming, “Hey, bro, I miss the mark, too! Here is how to make yourself feel better about you, and better as a husband.” Andy has logged countless hours counseling young couples, and he noticed some glaring patterns. His humility in bearing his own mistakes to men and women while ministering has earned him the title Relationship Guru among Highpoint followers. Andy wanted

to share his insight on a broader level, giving solidarity to a society where the average marriage lasts a meager eight years. As a result Andy and his wife, Amanda, designed Making Marriage Makes Sense, an eight week course on marriage, complete with workbooks and group projects. They rely on their humor and uncanny ability to engage a crowd to foster a lifelong union between two selfish people. If going to a course on marriage with dozens of other couples sounds intimidating, you are not alone. Molly Farrell, owner of bridal store Maggie Louise, remembers her first day of MMMS several years ago, “I was a little nervous at first, but excited about the doors it would possibly open in our (she and now husband Eric’s) relationship. At the time, we had been dating but were not communicating at a high level. So the thought of being engaged or talking about marriage was intimidating.” On day one of each course, Andy asks a loaded question: what is the number one reason a relationship or marriage doesn’t work? ANNESDALE MANSION This Memphis treasure was kept hidden since 1850. The Italianate Villa is tucked among the mature trees in the Annesdale Snowden Historic District, and was open only to a privileged Snowden family and friends. Set on seven acres, the mansion began as a wedding gift and “Annesdale” is the namesake of the bride, Annie Overton Brinkley. For over 160 years, this architectural gem was a well-kept secret until Ken Robison bought the property in 2010. “When we were renovating, we invited the MPD and MFD here to visit and get acquainted with who we are and what we’re doing. Many of the officers didn’t even know this house was even here,” Ken said. He began his meticulous and loving restoration, and then in 2013 he has opened the doors for weddings, parties, corporate events, and now group tours are being offered because of so many locals interested in this magical mansion in the heart of midtown. Annesdale, an elegant treasure with golden Memphis roots, preserved for today’s brides and fairytale beginnings.

HOOPERS A.M.E. CHAPEL at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music If you want to put some extra soul in your wedding, there is no better place than the reclaimed Hoopers A.M.E. HEARTWOOD HALL Built in 1840, Heartwood Hall was originally part of a 5,000 acre plantation estate and is listed as “The Miller House” on the National Historic Register. Originally built by the Miller family, Heartwood Hall was constructed as a wedding gift for Mr. Miller’s daughter. Today, Heartwood Hall has been restored to its antebellum glory, poised on 25 wooded acres in Rossville. Owners John and Denise Suthoff bought the house, and they added 3500 square feet to the residence, plus a gourmet kitchen, courtyard, garden, and pool area. It was by chance that the Suthoffs discovered the potential in their project: post-renovation, they offered to host their niece’s wedding. During the wedding planning process, they realized the beautiful and relaxed environment at Heartwood Hall made it a perfect wedding venue to share with other brides. CEDAR HALL Built in 1846, Cedar Hall is one of the oldest properties remaining in Bartlett, and is also proudly listed on the National Historical Register as the “John H. McFadden House.” The three story Colonial Revival style home is a beautiful example of well-preserved antebellum architecture that was lovingly cared for by previous owners. In the 1940’s, a stunning spiral staircase was imported from Europe and added to the grand foyer, a stunning entrance for a bride on her wedding day. Today, the Manor Home is also a Bed & Breakfast, set on 10 acres that feels like a distant getaway that is just minutes from Memphis. Cedar Hall was also bought by Denise Suthoff, and in 2012 she began converting it into a B&B and event venue. She added a gourmet kitchen for preparing magnificent meals for guests, plus private bathrooms for each guest room. For picture perfect ceremonies, she also added an English Garden and a Formal Garden to the property, as well as building the spacious Stables. 2 lbs. head-on large-jumbo prawns or shrimp Chermoula Sauce ¼ bunch cilantro, leaves and stems separated, stems finely chopped 1 Fresno chile, seeded if desired, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely grated ¼ cup olive oil

1 Tbl tomato paste 1 tsp paprika ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes ½ tsp honey ¼ tsp ground allspice 1 Tbl Sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar

Blend sauce ingredients in a blender or food processor until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and let sit for 1 hour at room temperature. Place in a saucepan and heat very gently just until warm. Peel prawns leaving head and tail intact. Brush lightly with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill until slightly firm. Serve prawns with sauce and arugula salad.

1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs 5 Tbl unsalted butter, melted 1 tsp curry powder, preferable Madras 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar

8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 tsp fresh lemon zest, finely grated 1 cup heavy cream, chilled 4 tsp dark rum 4 firm ripe bananas

Stir together crumbs, butter, curry powder, cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar in a bowl with a fork until combined well. Reserve 1 tablespoon of crumb mixture for garnish. Press remaining crumb mixture evenly onto bottom and sides of 9” pie plate. Bake crust 10 minutes at 350 degrees, then cool completely. Beat together cream cheese, zest, and remaining brown sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer at high speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. In another bowl and using clean beaters, mix cream with rum at medium speed until it holds soft peaks. 10 oz White Chocolate bits ½ C Heavy Cream Handful of Peppermint Sprigs In a sauce pan place sprigs and heavy cream and bring to a boil. Let step up to one hour. Remove sprigs and bring to a boil once more, pour over chocolate and whisk until fully incorporated. Refrigerate and let cool completely. Using a spoon, spoon out ganache and roll into truffle balls. Lastly, roll truffles across broken peppermint candy or sprinkles.

1 lb Flank steak, trimmed 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard 4 oz Goat cheese 1 Tsp Chopped chives 1 clove Garlic, minced

OW E N B R E N N A N ’ S 1 C Baby spinach leaves 1 Tbsp Olive oil Kosher salt, to taste Cracked black pepper, to taste

Combine goat cheese, chives, and garlic in a mixing bowl. Lay out flank steak and spread dijon one side. Spread goat cheese mixture evenly over top of dijon. Lay spinach leaves over goat cheese mixture, overlapping. Starting at one end, carefully roll steak to form roulade. Apply generous pressure while rolling to keep the roulade tight. Season roulade with salt and pepper. Insert 2 or 3 tooth picks as needed to hold shape. Cover the bottom of a saute pan with olive oil and set over medium high heat. Once hot, carefully sear roulade for 1 to 2 minutes. Flip roulade over and sear an additional minute. Remove tooth picks and roll the roulade around the pan. Be sure to sear all sides. Transfer pan to a 350° oven. Bake 6 to 8 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before slicing.

Cheesecake Crust 2 cups graham cracker crumbs ¼ cup melted butter Mix well; add more butter if needed, press into pan and bake for 5 minutes Half Sheet Pan 3 lbs cream cheese 1.5 cups sugar ¼ cup cornstarch 2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 cup lime juice for key lime, optional

Place cream cheese in the bowl of a large stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment beat until smooth. Scrape down the bowl and add sugar, mix until fully mixed. Scrape down again and add cornstarch. Add eggs one at a time scraping the bowl after each one. Add vanilla. Do not over mix - you want to stop as soon as all ingredients are incorporated. Pour over the pre-baked crust, spread out smooth with a spatula, and bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Once set remove from the oven; set on counter and cool to room temp then place in refrigerator.

Sauce (Rim of Plate) 1 c Korean Pepper Paste 1 oz Cilantro 2 oz Kimichurri Juice MIx together, place on low heat until reduced by half, or resembles a paste like texture.

6 oz Caramelized Onions 3 oz Maple Mustard Glaze

Sear the Peameal bacon on the flattop. While searing warm the caramelized onions and toast the buns. Once the bacon has cooked, glaze each piece with the mustard glaze. Assemble the slider with a bottom bun, pickle, glazed peameal bacon, caramelized onions, and the top bun. Maple Glaze 1 cup Maple Syrup 1/2 cup Dijon Mustard

Combine all ingredients and mix until smooth. Label, Date, Refrigerate. Memphis’ Best Burger Caramelized Onions 1 large White Onion 1 T Liquid Margarine 5 T A-1 Steak Sauce Cut onions into half moons. Slice the have moons no thicker than 1/4”. Pour liquid margarine in a brazier pan and heat. Cook onions in butter until soft or translucent. Stir in steak sauce and cook until no liquid remains. Remove and cool.

Brie Phyllo Triangles with Pear and Walnut

SA LU D ! CO O K I N G S C H O O L AT W H O L E F O O D S M A R K E T, P O P L A R AV E . 4 oz Brie, rind removed and cut into small pieces ½ C Walnuts, finely ground 3 Tbsp Unsalted butter, plus more melted for the pastry 2 Pears, cored and finely diced 3 Tbsp Dark brown sugar ¼ C Orange juice

½ tsp Vanilla Pinch of cinnamon 1 box phyllo pastry, thawed ½ C Sugar 2 tsp Dried thyme Honey and cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Place the walnuts on a plate and lightly coat the pieces of brie in the nuts on all sides; place in the freezer to chill for at least 30 minutes until firm. In a small sauce pan, melt 3 Tbsp of butter and saute the pears over medium-high heat for 1 minute. Add in the brown sugar and orange juice, stirring to combine. Reduce heat to low and continue to cook until the sauce reduces and thickens, about 4 minutes. Stir in vanilla and cinnamon and set aside to cool completely. Preheat oven to 400F. To assemble, take one piece of phyllo pastry and lightly brush the entire surface with melted butter. Mix together the sugar and thyme in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the entire surface of the pastry sheet; top with an additional pastry sheet and repeat with more melted butter and thyme-sugar. Continue until you have 4 sheets of pastry. With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut into 8 long strips of dough. In the bottom corner of each strip, place 1 tsp of the cooled pear filling then top with a piece of the walnut-coated brie. Fold up like a flag, creating a triangle, tucking in any excess pastry. Continue with the remaining strips of dough and place on a lined baking sheet, brushing lightly with additional melted butter. Continue assembly until you have 24 triangles. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Can serve warm or at room temperature. Drizzle with honey and additional cinnamon if desired.

On a balmy Sunday afternoon in early December, the Levitt Shell hosted an unveiling of their Renovation Preservation Plans! Even though the temperatures were unseasonably warm, the celebration included sledding on the lawn and bonfires for roasting marshmallows and making soâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;mores. Of course, there was live music and also fireworks to end another perfect Sunday at the Levitt Shell. BETWEEN THE WORLD & ME By Ta-Nehisi Coates

Reviewed by Kevin Dean, Executive Director, Literacy Mid-South When Toni Morrison mandates that a book is “required reading,” you listen. Ta-Nehisi Coates’ novel, Between the World and Me, made the top of every “Best Of 2015” and bestseller list, stirred controversy with its provocative views of 9/11 responders, and sold out numerous times. As the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a topic of every major news network, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book has served as a centerpiece for important cultural and political conversations regarding race and privilege. As a white man, reading this book was both eyeopening and overwhelming. The “American Dream,” Coates contends, is one that has been built on the backs of African Americans for generations. This is profound stuff, and it isn’t easy to swallow. His story, which he structures as a letter to his fourteen year-old son, details his life as a young black man from West Baltimore who finds his identity while attending Howard University, a historically black college in Washington, DC. He labels Howard “the Mecca,” as he views the college as a place of self-discovery and self-acceptance. He describes the joy of being part of a majority, one which consistently celebrates his heritage and his color instead of relegating it to a certain month or day. It is there that he meets his wife and another student, Prince Jones. Though Coates and Jones are not best friends, the death of Jones at the hands of an undercover police officer is the final unraveling for Coates. After growing up in a poor, crime-ridden neighborhood, facing discrimination on all sides, and watching several of his friends die, Coates comes to view other people’s American Dream as false and psychically disfiguring. The African American body, though not chained as slaves, has become chained in other ways because of institutional racism and poverty. This long “letter” to his son, in essence, says, “Don’t get your hopes up.” This is not an easy book. As a white man who has always subscribed to the American Dream as a payoff for hard work and personal grit, this challenged the foundations of my own worldview. For me, it was frustrating and upsetting but ultimately enlightening and necessary. I will never fully understand his experiences, but I know that the pain he has felt is palpable and representative of bigger issues our country faces. Though only 150 pages in length, I found myself having to take breaks—long breaks—from the book to process what I had read. My experience is so different from his own, and his book challenged me in ways that other conversations on race and privilege had not. The best books are the ones that ask us to reconsider everything we know. I challenge you to read this book, not because of its entertainment value but because of its important contribution to the conversations taking place all over the United States. The book—whether inspiring outrage or empathy—is an important document that will undoubtedly be regarded as required reading for many generations to come.

MOSS DINNER The Moss Dinner was held recently in the Schilling Gallery of the Brooks Museum to honor Moss Society members. They enjoyed a seated dinner and entertainment from IRIS Orchestra and Ballet Memphis Junior Company. The Morrie A. Moss Society is comprised of individuals who are exceptionally committed to the vision and the legacy of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
