Memphis certainly has had a history of loss from the Yellow Fever Epidemic to the death of Dr. King, but through it all the city has overcome and prospered. In 2018 Memphis celebrated the return of Penny Hardaway to the University of Memphis as Head Basketball Coach. His being hired has filled the stands with hearts that longed to take pride in Tiger basketball. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital announced its largest gift ever as they work to further expand their capacity by developing The Pinch Project. The Pinch District is a vital part of the rebirth of Downtown, and had been championed by the Memphis Chamber of Commerce President Phil Trenary until his tragic death.
Memphis's Bicentennial Celebration starts this month, and the mem200.com website begins: WE STAND AT THE EDGE OF A NEW CENTURY. In 2019, our community will experience a unique moment: celebrating the past with our 200th anniversary while embracing the next 100 years. More than an anniversary, we extend an invitation to people locally and globally to join us as we honor our story, and the powerful next chapter that is about to be written. That story is profound, yet simple. Memphis has changed the world‌and we're not done yet. We are a city of doers, dreamers and believers. We create, we invent, we experiment. That's what drives this unstoppable city. Celebrations are a time of reflection, whether individually or collectively. Celebrations focus on finding joy in hardships overcome, mourning losses experienced and lifting up victories achieved. Individuals, organizations and cities all celebrate from these common experiences.
Memphis over the past two hundred years has overcome many hardships, mourned many a loss, while being able to claim many a victory. The book of Job is one of the most fascinating books in the Bible. While the Bible is not a history book, it clearly gives us snap shots of human history as it unfolds God's redemptive work in the life of mankind. It is a book of Celebration as you

Phil Trenary's senseless death and now the tragic death of Wei Chen are Memphis's most recent examples of loss that Memphis will have to overcome. Phil Trenary and Wei Chen both moved to Memphis and made Memphis their home. It is often said that the greatest champions of Memphis are those that have lived elsewhere; because they have experienced life elsewhere, they know how unique and special Memphis is.
Penny Hardaway experienced all the secular world had to offer while playing for the NBA and returned to Memphis to raise his family. Phil Trenary and Wei Chen moved to Memphis, and because of them Memphis is a better place to call home. They will be greatly missed by their families, and Memphis will mourn along with their families while celebrating what they gave us.
The history of 2019 has yet to be written but may each and every one of us strive to give to Memphis a little of what has been given to us.

Soiree in the Spotlight
The annual Soiree in the Spotlight celebrated the Orpheum Theatre’s 90th birthday. The evening got underway at the Halloran Centre and then moved to the Orpheum for live entertainment and dancing on the Orpheum stage. It was an evening of spectacular dishes and wine delights to benefit Special Olympics of Greater Memphis. Friends and supporters of Caritas Village enjoyed a night of mingling while checking out the newly-renovated Caritas Village, sipping on Caritas inspired cocktails, and listening to local musicians while watching Caritas' Artist in Residence, Jamond Bullock, paint. The special evening also featured a wonderfully crafted meal by Mac Edwards, in collaboration with other local chefs, paired with wine. O U R L O V E S T O R Y B E G A N I N T H E S P R I N G O F 2 0 1 2 one fateful Friday afternoon
in Knoxville, Tennessee. We were both wrapping up our junior year at The University of Tennessee; amongst the chaos of finals week, we found ourselves in the right place at the right time - our neighborhood pool - where mutual friends introduced us. We hit it off instantly and began dating one month later. From that very serendipitous day at the pool, I knew I would marry Adam. I wasn’t sure ‘why’ just yet, or certainly ‘when’, but my heart told me I had found “the one.” Our futures after college led us to different cities, Adam in Washington, D.C., pursuing a career in the world of marketing, and me in Nashville, TN, obtaining my nursing degree. We made long distance look easy, I must say! From the adventurous monthly visits, to the Skype and daily phone calls in between, we had strengthened our love even more. Long distance looked good on us, but we longed for a touch of normalcy, too. After two and a half years of living miles apart, we finally settled together in Memphis. Adam proposed in the backyard of our cozy Cooper-Young bungalow in the spring of 2017, and we excitedly began planning our dream southern wedding. We were married March 17, 2018, at the Hunt Phelan Mansion before 250 friends and family. Our early evening ceremony and reception, coordinated by the Hardin House, took place in the tented courtyard and garden on a warm and breezy St. Patrick’s Day. For the ceremony, I wore my late mother’s wedding dress, its statement piece being the Queen Anne neckline, with an outfit change for the reception. The courtyard was adorned with twinkle lit trees, lush greenery, and pale pink florals made up of peonies, roses and wildflowers. Guests were treated to the sumptuous wines of Cornerstone Cellars, flown in from Napa, CA, along with southern delicacies prepared by Chef Felicia Willett. The energetic R&B music of The Soul Shockers brought the crowd to their feet all night long! To end the evening on a high note, our guests were surprised with the Memphis Second Line Jazz Band and a parade down Beale Street and B.B. King Boulevard, concluding at The Peabody Hotel. It was the best day of our lives! - LLT

friends that I went to Mississippi State with. We instantly hit it off and spent every minute of every day together. After over a year together, we went to Las Vegas to David Yurman to look at rings. A few months later, we went to my family’s annual Christmas party in Caruthersville, Missouri. We ate lunch and went to a parade that was put on by the city. At the parade, my cousins all decided that they wanted to be in the parade. We were waiting for my cousins to come down and when I looked they were with two banners - one that said “All I want for Christmas is you- will you Merry Me?” and then another one that said “Kelsey will you marry me?”. When I looked down Brian was on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so excited. We were married December 1, 2018, at the Cadre Building with 250 of our closest friends and family. Our ceremony and reception were held at the Cadre Building on a sunny, warm December day. We had a “winter wonderland” wedding filled with lighted and floral trees and blush pink decor. It was so magical! Guests enjoyed breakfast food at the reception and personalized iced coffee. The guests took home milk and Krispy Kreme donuts in customized "Mr. and Mrs. Stephens" boxes. We left in a 1955 Chevy Bel Air from Rockabilly Rides, and left for our Honeymoon to cruise to Mexico! It was truly the best day ever! - KJS

Carmen Crane Roper Bond and the late Mike Roper were married on June 2, 2018 in Watercolor, FL. After a rainy day, the weather broke, and the most beautiful wedding took place on the beach with the sun setting in the background. The vocalist for the wedding was a dear family friend, Dr. Richard Todd Payne and he sang "On This Day". The very moving and meaningful vows were officiated by Reverend Larry Ray. After the wedding kiss, the newlyweds celebrated with friends and family at the Lake House overlooking Western Lake at Watercolor. A night of feasting on the bride and groom's favorite foods and dancing into the night was enjoyed by all. The bride wore a beautiful dress designed by Berta Bride. The mermaid lace dress was backless and had spaghetti straps, a sweeping beaded train, and had a special feature of scattered 3-D hand embroidered scalloped shells. The bridesmaids wore silk chiffon dresses in a soft misty blue. The bride's dress was from Maggie Louise and the bridesmaids dresses were from Bella Bridesmaids. The Groom and his groomsmen wore ecru linen pants and white linen shirts provided by James Davis in Memphis. The relaxing and happy evening continued into the night and was celebrated by many of the bride and groom's family and friends who came from all over the country to celebrate with them. On the eve of the wedding a lovely rehearsal dinner was given by the groom's mother, Carmen Roper Bond, at the clubhouse at Churchill Oaks overlooking the Bay. Everyone enjoyed a happy hour of specialty cocktails and an oyster bar featuring oysters prepared in 5 ways. The highlight of the evening was listening to beautiful toasts to the bride and groom from dear family members and friends. The night ended with dancing under the stars. On Thursday night, friends of the groom's mother hosted a Welcome Beach Bonfire Bash in honor of the bride and groom. On Friday the bride and groom's aunts hosted a Bridesmaids luncheon at the Surfing Deer Restaurant. The photographer was Jerry Borwick. The videographer was Message in the Bottle.

The Business of Bella Bridesmaids

Many brides like to have their dress first to make sure the bridesmaids’ dresses will coordinate with their gown. “For instance, if a bride has a strapless gown, she might not want her bridesmaids to wear strapless or that might not matter to them,” she said. Spending time researching beforehand can eliminate some of the confusion when trying to make a decision.
Kelsey was in Ridgeland, Mississippi, with her best friend shopping for her wedding dress in late 2017. A Bella Bridesmaids location was in the same building as the shop where she was buying her wedding dress. On the drive back on I-55 North to Memphis, Kelsey was brainstorming business ideas. She thought a Bella store would be great because she has a fashion background and loves the bridal industry. She looked at the Bella Bridesmaids website, and filled out an inquiry about owning a Bella store. Brainstorming time with a best friend and a click on a link began her new venture.
The trends she is seeing for the new year include dresses that are mixed and matched, rather than the same dress for every bridesmaid. The mix and match dress solution was how Kelsey solved her own wedding dilemma. For her recent wedding in November, her bridesmaids each wore a different dress style by different designers, and all in coordinated shades of pink.
bridal beginnings: she bought a bridal business and she got married. While she was planning her own wedding, Kelsey discovered an opportunity to be in the bridal fashion business with Bella Bridesmaids Memphis, an ideal blend of her fashion merchandising degree and passion for all-things-bridal.
Bella Bridesmaids is an international business, with approximately 100 stores worldwide. As an answer to the inquiry she submitted, Kelsey got a call from Bella corporate while working at her job in banking. She was busy, and several times declined their call. When she received a text message saying they needed to speak with her immediately, she stepped away from her desk and called back. As luck would have it, the Memphis store was for sale. In March, 2018, she became the proprietor of a Bella Bridesmaids location. “I felt like it was such a blessing to have this opportunity,” Kelsey shared. What is the best advice she could give to brides? “As soon as you have your wedding dress, start thinking about bridesmaids’ dresses,” she said. Before buying her business, Kelsey had already selected the dress for her own bridesmaids. She had selected the style, the designer, and the color she wanted for her wedding. When the sample dress arrived, it wasn’t exactly what she wanted so she changed it. And she changed again. And again several more times! What she learned in the process comes down to having a vision before and then doing some research.
Other trends for 2019 include muted, floral patterns. “Some brides choose the floral dresses for their maid of honor’s dress, and the bridesmaids’ dresses in a solid color,” she said. Popular colors are shades of burgundy or navy, and slate blue is becoming a new neutral color choice. Another trend is for the bridesmaids to wear white or nude dresses, and beaded or sequined dresses are a more dazzling choice. Bella Bridesmaids offers a rainbow selection of dress colors, an array of styles, price points from $140-$420, and notable designers such as Jenny Yoo and Dessy. They also stock Hayley Paige bridesmaids dresses, that complement the designer’s wedding gowns offered at Maggie Louise. Brides also need to be aware that bridesmaids’ dresses take 14-16 weeks to arrive – back to her single most important piece of advice to start planning as soon as possible after choosing a wedding gown. For Kelsey, the past year was one of successful beginnings with her own wedding and having her dream business with Bella Bridesmaids. “We try to make everyone’s vision for their wedding come to life!”
Most brides just say they want their bridesmaids to feel good in the dress, and by doing a little homework everyone will look good and feel good on the big day. Kelsey recommends brides first choose a color, and to use Pinterest and Instagram in deciding what looks they like. “Follow designers that you like, and then look at the dresses in real wedding photographs because it will look different in pictures than it does in the store,“ she said. Other factors to consider include restrictions, such as church rules; if any bridesmaids are plus size; if the venue is more formal or casual; and the style preference. The choices can be overwhelming, and having a vision for the color, fabric, and style is crucial. When Kelsey began running the store, it was very important to her that she really understand and know the dresses. To make sure she could personally relate to her clients, she and her staff tried on every dress in the store. HAVE FUN: It’s easy to get tied up in work, child care,etc.but you took an oath that this person you’re married to would come first, so when you start prioritizing things if they get lost on the list for too long, they get lost all together, but if you keep them first that helps keep all the rest of it in order. Adults need to date and have time together to be happy. Have a paid babysitter or a relative, and go out on a date. The big thing is to take a vacation, a minimum of three days up to two weeks - just the two of you.This will benefit your children.
So, how do you improve your odds? Below is Larry’s wise advice and anecdotes on “how to not hire him” - AKA “how not to get divorced.” BE NICE: Be nice so that you have enough positive points to offset your deficits. Flowers for no reason are the best investment a guy can make; or cards, or a nice note printed off the computer, or even an “I Love You” message on a post it. Larry says he buys flowers for Joy on most weeks, because he loves to see the smile on her face. Guys should apologize, and women should accept the apology graciously and appreciate that he loves you enough to apologize even when he may not have any knowledge that he has done anything wrong.

STAY OUT OF “SHOW BUSINESS”: When the thought enters your mind “I will show him/her” - don’t. Nothing ever good comes from “I will show them.” It’s not about showing your spouse, but it is about your unhappiness. If the thought is, “I’m going to show them,” then that is going to be an emotional grenade. DO OPPOSITES ATTRACT?: Opposites can create a balanced relationship, but no couple is completely opposite or the completely the same. There’s a balance of similar characteristics, traits or goals, and they’re also a balance of opposing characteristics and goals. The interplay between the positive things that you appreciate about each other and the love and appreciation and support that you feel for each other that lets you live in an emotional solar system where the two planets are orbiting at opposite poles.
While Larry’s had huge success in the courtroom in the realm of divorce, he’s also quite an expert on explaining how NOT to hire him. Having listened to the stories of his clients’ marriages, Larry has figured out what makes for a good, successful marriage, and above all, Larry has been married to his highschool sweetheart, Joy Gaia Rice, for 44 years. They recently celebrated the anniversary of their first date December 14, 1969. “Marriage is the biggest bet you can possibly make - you are betting everything. You’re betting what you will acquire for the rest of your life, your income, your children, your emotions - all of that - in your belief that the person you are with now will continue to have a mutual attraction for decades to come, as each of you change in ways neither of you can foresee,” Larry says. “Thank goodness for love because no sane person would make that bet without love clouding their judgement.”
There’s going to be plenty of times you may get crossways and irritated, but every time you get mad, access the thought, “What is more important - this or our relationship?”. Larry says for example, “I am so upset that you drank milk out of the carton, oh but I am still glad I married you!”

WHY ARE THOSE DATE NIGHTS AND VACATIONS SO IMPORTANT? Larry makes the analogy that marriage is like a battleship. Battleships almost never sink with one shot, it is usually the accumulated damage that isn’t fixed that sinks the ship. It takes damage, it goes slower, it can’t defend itself and becomes more vulnerable to attack, so it’s more sensitive. If it can get into a port (a date or a vacation) and get repaired then it can sail back out in as good of shape as ever, so it is critical to keep the battleship of your marriage afloat. Find out what your spouse likes, and do it over and over. You can space it out, but do what your spouse likes.“It makes me happy to do for my wife and make her happy.”
WHEN IS DIVORCE THE BEST OPTION?: Larry says if you can’t be happy, or you can’t get the life you would reasonably expect to lead, then you have to look at divorce. Drugs, alcohol abuse or certain mental illnesses are reasons divorce may be the only option. One of the most important things is to ask your spouse is to go to counseling with you. The answer to that question is critical. If your spouse says yes to counseling, they are willing to put the marriage ahead of their ego, and that answer “yes” is an indicator of how important the relationship is to that person. Larry says he enjoys laughing with Joy, and that in a good marriage, it is not work. With a smile he says “It makes me happy to make Joy happy. I really am lucky - my wife is a Joy, and a joy!” Larry will be hosting his last CLE seminar next spring at the Fire Museum of Memphis March 13-15, 2019. P E S T O P A R M E S A N C H E E S E S T R AW S 1 box frozen puff pastry, defrosted in the refrigerator overnight 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water 1 cup prepared pesto - basil, cilantro, tomato, roasted red pepper your choice! ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper or silpat mats. Roll out each sheet of puff pastry to a rectangle, ¼ inch thick. Brush the egg wash mixture over the surface of each pastry sheet before spreading a thin layer of the pesto, topping with parmesan cheese. Press gently to adhere the cheese to the pesto.

HERB & SPICED OLIVES 3 cups mixed olives (about ¾ lb) 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons fresh rosemary or thyme, minced 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced ½ teaspoon crushed fennel seeds, or to taste ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste In a container with a tight fitting lid, combine all of the ingredients together with salt and pepper to taste. Chill, shaking occasionally, at least for 1 day or up to 1 week.
Divide each sheet into 11-12 strips of dough; gently twist and place onto the prepared sheet, pressing down on the ends. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until lightly browned and puffed, turning them over halfway through the baking.

Gently open up one of the cut dates and spoon a small amount of the cheese mixture in the center, pressing the sides together to close. Continue with the remaining dates and cheese. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

Button mushrooms Seafood stuffing (1 onion finely diced, 3 cloves minced garlic, 2/3 cup chopped parsley, 2 pounds cooked salmon, 1 pound cooked scallops, 1 pound cooked shrimp, 1 quart breadcrumbs, 1 lemon, 4 eggs, 1/4 cup parmesan) Mix together everything except for the breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. Once mixed, stuff the mushrooms with the seafood mixture. Separately mix the parmesan and breadcrumbs and sprinkle over the stuffed mushrooms. Bake at 350 degrees until crust turns brown.

Boil eggs 8-10 minutes. Cool in ice bath. Remove yolks when cooled. Mix together all ingredients in a bowl except the cilantro. Mix well. Once properly mixed, stuff your eggs with the amount of stuffing that you desire. Garnish with whole cilantro leaves.

Strain the liquid and reduce until desired thickness

Use dry rub on entire skin-off-pork-belly. Place on top of carrots, celery, and onion, and cook at 250 degrees for 6-7 hours depending on the size of the belly. Once cooked, pull apart the pork belly with your hands and set aside. Bao Buns can be bought in the freezer section of your favorite local Asian market. Wrap each bun with aluminum foil and warm in the oven. Once the buns are warm, saute pork belly in a pan with the desired amount of sticky sauce. Add chopped peanuts and mix in the pan. Fill the buns with the meat, and garnish with fresh cilantro and pickled veggies.
BRAISED SHORT RIBS 1 case beef short ribs 3 whole carrots, sliced in large coin-size 2 celery stalks, large chop 3 whole onion, large chop 15 whole garlic 2 pounds veal demi 1 gallon beef base 2 cups red wine ½ pound rosemary ½ pound thyme Season short ribs with salt, pepper, granulated garlic, granulated onion, and oil. Place all ingredients in a large pan; cover with foil. Bake at 300 degrees for 3-4 hours or until tender.
Put parsnips, garlic, shallots, heavy cream, water, butter in pot and cook until celery root is soft. Strain the vegetables from liquid, and put in blender and blend smooth; if too thick add some liquid from the strained vegetables. Add truffle oil, parmesan, salt and pepper to finish.

Slightly toast and set aside. Cut raw bacon into pieces. Cook until completely crispy. Remove all grease. Once cooled place bacon in food processor adding mayo and whole grain mustard. Pulse 3-4 times until everything is incorporated and can form into ball. Place bacon mix on toasted brioche top with half a cherry tomato and thinly sliced chives.

DESSERT SPOONS Ingredients for spoons: 7 ounces white chocolate, chopped into very small pieces 2 egg yolks 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup heavy cream, plus 1 cup Apple, cut in very small cubes Cinnamon Sticks Cinnamon Strawberries, sliced Pumpkin seeds Pomegranate seeds Marshmallow cream Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal Graham cracker spoons Semisweet chocolate melting wafers Mini marshmallows Caramel syrup
W H I T E C H O C O L AT E M O U S S E S P O O N S In a large glass bowl, place the chopped white chocolate and set aside. Add the egg yolks and sugar to a small bowl and whisk until pale in color. In a saucepan, over low heat, bring 1/4 cup of the cream to a simmer, and slowly add the cream into the yolk and sugar mixture to temper. Pour the creamy mixture back into pan and stir with a wooden spoon until it coats the back of it. Pour hot mix into a fine mesh sieve placed directly over bowl with the chopped chocolate. Stir until completely smooth. In another bowl, whip remaining 1 cup of the cream to almost stiff peaks. Fold half the whipped cream into the white chocolate mix to lighten and then fold in the remaining whipped cream. Spoon the white chocolate mousse into a piping bag and refrigerate until set, approximately 1 hour. Once chilled, pipe onto the spoon and garnish with your choice of toppings.
APPLE, CARAMEL & CINNAMON Before piping the mousse on the spoon place a small amount of caramel in the spoon and down the middle of the handle, then pipe the mousse on top. Cube very small pieces of apple and carefully place on top of the mousse. Place a small cinnamon stick in the mousse and sprinkle with cinnamon on top.
S’MORES SPOONS Put the semi- sweet chocolates into a heatproof medium bowl. Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Turn off the heat; set the bowl of chocolate over the water to melt. Stir until smooth. (Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a microwave at half power, for 1 minute, stir and then heat for another minute or until melted.) Once the chocolate is melted and smooth, remove from the heat. Line a sheet pan with parchment or waxed paper. Holding the graham cracker spoon by the handle, dip into the dark chocolate, lift and twist slightly, letting any excess chocolate fall back into the bowl. Set graham cracker spoon on the parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the graham cracker spoons. Place in fridge until chocolate has hardened. Once the chocolate has hardened put a dollop of marshmallow cream onto the spoon and carefully burn the top of the cream. Garnish with mini marshmallows, chocolate chips and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. JANUARY 2019

ON JANUARY 1ST OF 1851, six Dominican sisters rode in a small flatboat down the Mississippi River to answer the call of Dominican priest Father Thomas Grace and start St. Agnes Academy, the first all girls Catholic school in the small town of Memphis. The growing city is now home to over a million citizens and St. Agnes Academy remains a vital part of the community. When the school first opened its doors, it was run by the Dominican Sisters of Peace and built upon the the school’s four pillars of prayer, faith, community, and service. These pillars were upheld during some of the city’s hardest times as St. Agnes’ doors remained open to teach students and tend to those in need during the Civil War and multiple Yellow Fever epidemics. Today, St. Agnes Academy remains the oldest continuously operating school in the city of Memphis and upholds it’s pillars through innovative education as an Apple Distinguished School, opportunities to engage with local and global communities through extracurricular programs, various service projects such as their annual fundraiser for the Make a Wish foundation, and strong ties to the Catholic community and its founders, the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Throughout its 168 years, St. Agnes has grown and evolved with the city of Memphis, however, the school’s central mission has remained the same—to empower girls to become strong, educated women of faith.

IT TOOK US FIVE HOURS to get from Memphis to Cookeville, packed so tightly into the Cline Tours bus that we looked like sardines on a grocery store shelf. We arrived, stood, and cheered. First we were just cheering in the cold. Then it started to rain, so we began cheering in cold rain. Eventually the clock reached zero. We began to leave, disappointed. The Memphis-based MUS football team had fallen to its Nashville counterpart, Brentwood Academy, in the TSSAA State Championship. Our grief was exemplified when we remembered that we had to return to our sardine can for the enormous ride back, and that the sun had set hours ago. It wasn’t until around 3 o’clock — in the morning, of course — that the wheels on the bus finally rolled back into Memphis. Although we arrived in Cookeville for the November 30th game, we returned in December. The battle for the state title between MUS and Brentwood was held at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium, a “neutral” zone that happened to be a whopping 300 miles from Memphis. That’s a hefty length to travel, considering those from Brentwood only had to drive about 85 miles. I guess everyone just has a different definition of “neutral.” Regardless, Brentwood Academy ended up beating MUS 28-6, becoming one of four schools to win four straight state championships. They have won 45 of their last 50 games, and join Alcoa, Ensworth, and Maryville as Tennessee’s only schools to win four consecutive titles. This marked MUS’s first state
appearance since 2013, when they fell to an undefeated Ensworth team. The Owls had entered Tucker Stadium with a perfect 11-0 record, but early mistakes and a huge night from Brentwood ultimately gave the victory to the Eagles. A first-quarter fumble by MUS quarterback Sellers Shy led to a quick touchdown run from Brentwood senior Temario Pleasant. Eagles quarterback Wade Williams then threw for a pair of touchdowns before Pleasant struck again, slipping away from the MUS defense for a 44-yard score. It was 28-6 at halftime, and the scoreboard didn’t change for the remainder of the game. MUS had four turnovers and Shy, the city’s passing leader, was sacked four times. They gave up 339 yards to the Eagles, and only averaged 4.5 yards per play on the offensive end. Pleasant finished with a total of 181 yards on 32 carries and was named the game’s MVP. It was an odd night for the Owls, who are accustomed to putting up far better numbers. Maurice Hampton, the Owls’ premiere wide receiver, recently won the Division II Class AAA Mr. Football award. A four-star recruit, Hampton has committed to play both football and baseball at LSU, as he is also a 2018 All-American Classic player. MUS linebacker Dorian Hopkins had previously been named Mr. Football in 2016, and is currently committed to play at Tulsa. Lausanne’s Eric Gray also won his third Mr. Football award this year, making himself and Hampton the only two Memphians to be recognized with the 2018 title.

Exceptional Foundation Breakfast at Tiffany’s Fashion Show By: Merrill Culpepper This year, Lindsey Fields, another senior at St. Mary’s, and I are co-hosting the Exceptional Foundation Fashion Show, one of the biggest fundraisers for the Foundation. If you don’t know what the Exceptional Foundation is, it is an organization that strives to enrich the lives of adults and children with disabilities by meeting their social, recreational, and continued educational needs. The Foundation serves participants of all ages with Autism, Down Syndrome, Developmental Delay, Cerebral Palsy, and many other disabilities. The Exceptional Foundation has held a place in both of our hearts for the past few years. We have been able to volunteer there and get to know the participants at the Foundation. One of my favorite memories was last year when our grade got to participate in a service day at the Exceptional Foundation. We played board games, ran around, and played Just Dance with them; it was so much fun. All that to say, after volunteering and helping out with the previous fashion shows, we have decided to continue the Exceptional Foundation Fashion Show as a way to not only fundraise, but to allow the participants of the organization to truly shine. The Exceptional Foundation Fashion Show was inaugurated in August of 2015 with 21 special need participants who were
the actual models for the show. In 2015, the fashion show raised over $25,000, allowing this exceptional organization to continue doing its impactful work. In 2016, the show raised $35,000. The Exceptional Foundation is among the few non-profit organizations in Memphis receiving no government funding, and a majority of the participants require scholarships, so this fundraiser is so important to the Foundation. The third-annual Exceptional Foundation Fashion Show will take place at Temple Israel on January 13th, 2019. Doors will open at 2, so please mark your calendars!
