Recently, Sandi Butler Hughes and I sat down with Memphis’ Police Director Toney Armstrong to interview him for an upcoming story. I don’t normally sit in on an interview with the editorial staff; however, I have wanted to get to know Director Armstrong since the early days for the magazine, because I have wanted 4Memphis to do a monthly column about the families of the Memphis Police Department. The greatest of cities will fail if the citizens don’t feel safe; the law enforcement community is the front line to secure safety. The families that make up the law enforcement community are the foundation of the city’s effort to secure the peace and safety of the city. I don’t think you will find many reasonable people who would argue the point that these families give up a lot for the benefit of the city. The men and women of our police force go home to spouses and children at the end of the work day. In most of these families, the spouse has a full-time job that allows the officer to raise his or her children with the typical American Dream, education and opportunity. They are given the opportunity to grow up in a comfortable, safe home that allows that child to become all that God has made him or her to be. The families of the law enforcement community live with one major difference than the rest of us: when that officer leaves to go to work, the family prays a little harder that they come home. The cost of our city’s safety comes at the expense of these families. The officer is not the only one working on behalf of the city; his or her family is serving Memphis by allowing them to do their job. Director Armstrong is home grown. He grew up Memphis, was educated in
Memphis and attended the Memphis Police Academy. He rose through the ranks to become the Memphis Police Director. He has a wife and child that are serving Memphis by allowing him to be a part of the Memphis Police Department. They have lived with the same insecurity of his fellow officer’s families and now live with the unique challenge of sharing their husband/father with a man whose job requires him to be on call every hour, every day of the year. You ask the Director about the officers who have lost their lives on his watch and he will immediately give you their names and the dates of their death. He can tell you where he was when he got the call and the name of their family members as he shows their pictures on his wall. It is all very real to him and the entire Police Department. Ecclesiastes 4:10 “But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” Pity the city that does not have a Police Department whose heart it is to serve its city. Pity the city that is not there to support its police department, for that is a city that is destined to fail. Seek the Peace and Prosperity of Memphis, Jim Walker
* Publisher’s note to the title of my letter, it started out as “The strength of Memphis” but the use of the word “Memphis” verses “our City” was less personal. In this content they have the same meaning, but the use of “our City” makes us responsible for our city verses a generic place on a map. It is our home and indeed we are responsible for it and to each other!

Shake the Hand that Feeds You Local CSAs Make It Easier To Eat Fresh By Stephanie Beliles, photos courtesy of Roots Memphis, Bring It Food Hub & St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
There is something to be said about living off the land; farmers quite literally depend on nature’s forces for their successes. Scorching heat can devastate crops; excessive rain can drown yields; bugs, birds, and disease can destroy harvests. Memphis’ local farmers are an integral part of our local economy, and to show their support, many Memphians have moved beyond that occasional cucumber at farmers market. Community Supported Agriculture (commonly referred to as CSAs) have found their way into Memphis homes, and two resident favorite CSAs offer the city quite the bounty. Community Supported Agriculture allows someone to enjoy local wares directly from their regional farmers. Interested consumers purchase a “share” (typically in the form of a subscription), and in return, the member receives a weekly box or bag of fresh veggies, fruits, eggs, and other local goodies. The subscriptions last a growing season, offering participants healthy food from farmers and growers that they can meet firsthand, and with farms they could easily visit. The bags are distributed at the CSAs’ hubs, and some deliveries even contain recipes incorporating the fresh crops. CSAs give local farmers the opportunity to farm more effectively by giving them a more regular cash flow; subscriptions allow farmers to better plan for their growing season. In return, the produce subscribers get is harvested within 48 hours of the pickup, which is much fresher
than the produce being shipped from places like Guatemala. A CSA can teach people about new fruits and vegetables and how to prepare them, allowing them to “eat outside of the box.” In addition, eating regional crops lends serious understanding to what food is available regionally and seasonally, giving the recipients a satisfying connection with their land. Joining a CSA can give members a real relationship with their farmers, who are a vital part of every community. However, it is undeniable that compared to historical numbers, the number of farming professionals is alarmingly small (thanks to huge conglomerate farms as well as processed foods). Luckily, there is an organization that intends to change that fact. It has been a soggy start to the Memphis summer.
Mary Phillips and her fiancé Wes Riddle are unhappy about the state of their fields, but they are not discouraged. “This is what reality is for these future farmers. This is the risk you take when you want to farm.” Mary and Wes run an organization called Roots Memphis, and the program has taken hold in the community. Roots Memphis started as a half-acre urban farm located on a once vacant lot in Whitehaven, just around the corner from Graceland. Mary is the founder of Roots and several other urban farming initiatives around Memphis. Mary was not your typical Memphis youth: she decided at the ripe age of fourteen to become a farmer and has since had years and multiple farms added to her resume. After farming her way across America, Mary found herself back in Memphis. Having noted the trend in eating local and supporting local sustainable
July 2014 / 31
“It takes work and effort from both parties to use product from community farmers, but it’s worth it.” – Chef Miles McMath farming practices, Mary thought it wise to put down the plow and educate prospective farmers. Roots Memphis Farming Academy is a product of the need for more (and better-informed) farmers. And just like any school, students log time in the classroom: eight months to be exact. “Many people know they are interested in farming and want to work outdoors, and therefore think farming is perfect for them. But new farmers sometimes don’t go into it with a business plan or a brand or a budget, and that’s where we can help,” explains Wes. The students spend their first eight months creating a business plan while studying courses like business entrepreneurship, planning and management, sustainable agriculture theory and practice, and small farm production skills. Next, they utilize the plan in what Roots calls the “incubation period,” where they manage a quarter-
acre farm plot and see if the students’ business plan is commercially feasible. It is those students’ yields (and the yields of Mary and Wes’ personal labor) that make up the CSA product. The money is put back into the program, allowing future generations of prospective sustainable farmers a place to learn and practice before entering into a career of agriculture. Roots Memphis maintains that if knowledge is power, they are grooming dominant forces in local agriculture. And that means added value to local yields (and to local dinner tables). Despite the current waterlogged rows, Roots farms still have impressive return. In fact, two of their students are a married power-duo that made their own large crop boxes, allowing draining during the damp days and saving the day for an otherwise sodden CSA. Mary, Wes, and the students also have a major backer in their endeavors; St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital donated several hoop houses (small greenhouses) to their program. In return, St. Jude Chef Miles McMath incorporates the chemicalfree, pesticide-free, and non- GMO crops from Roots Memphis into his offerings at St. Jude. Chef Miles gushes about his goods from CSAs like Roots Memphis: “It takes work and effort from both parties to use product from community farmers, but it’s worth it. My priority number one is to support local farmers, especially for taste and nutritional value. We like to be able to shake the hands that feed us.” Chef Miles notes that many farmers are scared to overgrow because they do not want to waste or lose money; however, he assures farmers that St. Jude will take every bit of overflow. Roots Memphis Farm Academy happily supplies St. Jude with their overflow, and is more than ready to take on new CSA customers who are interested in variety. “We have a strong assortment of crops because our students’ interests are so diverse. We have a couple who spent years in Mexico, so their yields include tomatillos and peppers. We also have a student who is interested in running her own event space with self-grown flowers, so we have flowers. Then with the cooler and wetter start to the summer, we still have heartier crops like kale and bok choy,” notes Mary. Local eateries in Midtown are taking advantage of the diverse givings: Bari, Strano, and Tsunami (to name a few) all invest in regional produce and use the Roots CSA as an opportunity to keep it fresh and local. Strano’s owner Chef Josh Steiner notes the importance in what Roots is setting out to accomplish, “It is super important to me to use local produce. It tastes better, is better for you, and it allows Memphis as a community to succeed.” While Mary, Wes, and their students trudge through the mud, someone can enjoy a kale salad at Strano knowing the dish came from a local labor of love. You can join on rootsmemphis.org, and a Roots Memphis CSA member can get updates on the Roots’ Facebook page for their weekly bag. Pickup sites include the Cooper Young Farmers Market, as well as some special-circumstance deliveries. Jill Forrester can empathize with the newborn farmers from the Roots Academy. To Jill, it seems like only yesterday that she and her husband Keith were starting their small farm in Whitton, Arkansas. Now, Whitton Farms is a local powerhouse, providing fresh produce
32 / 4Memphis
to many local restaurants and homes. Because of their involvement with Memphis Farmers Market (and their cute, quirky down-home personalities) Jill and Keith have met many fellow farmers, and Jill saw an opportunity to help them. Chris Ramezanpour, a local food and farming guru, approached Jill to act as a board member and “farmer liaison” to what would become Bring It Food Hub, a regional multi-farm CSA. Chris previously worked as a field agent for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Kilifi, Kenya, and assisted in the management and development of the farming-as-abusiness component of the Farmer Field School Program. He returned to Memphis and realized the parallels in the struggles farmers have overseas and regional farmers’ issues. Chris then met Noah Campbell, who directs the Memphis Center for Food and Faith, an organization that promotes education and action to better connect congregational food practices to creation and community ministries. Together, Chris and Noah brainstormed a holistic approach to community, food, and faith. Chris and Noah are both fans of the Memphis Farmers Market, where Jill is an effervescent force, selling Whitton Farms produce and flowers from her multi-colored psychedelic farm truck. The two men combed through Jill’s contacts to find a diverse local group of responsible farmers in the Mid-South. Chris, Jill, and Noah snagged the opportunity to bring together many locally-respected farmers, and, therefore, creating an environment for everyone to have happier and healthier meals. Bring It Food Hub has many pick-up sites, but what makes this particular CSA interesting is the support churches and other religious organizations have given it. Noah encourages churches and theological centers to incorporate CSAs into their congregations in order to better connect their food practices. Likewise, Memphis’ own Church Health Center, who acts as a nationwide model for keeping the Biblical commitment to treating our bodies like a temple, is working with Bring It Food Hub on an initiative to help others in helping themselves eat properly. Together they offer nutrition and food preparation classes to those who may be not-so-familiar with preparing healthy meals. In fact, Bring It Food Hub wants to reach the “healthy food” outliers so badly that they are seeking credentials to accept EBT as payment for their CSA. The constant message heard at Bring It
Alex and Rosie of Bring It Food Hub
headquarters is that of community health and community support. “How our community lives directly affects us all,” wisely notes Chris, making Bring It Food Hub and the Church Health Center a natural partnership. Bring It Food Hub has enjoyed overwhelming success for an organization shy of a year since outset. They rotate from a group of over 20 farmers, and subscription bags include foods like berries, peaches, heirloom tomatoes, kale, greens, sweet potatoes, okra, peppers, sweet basil, organic white or brown rice, and organic popcorn. Jill and Keith’s Whitton Farms provides plenty of the produce to the CSA, and they stand by their Bring It Food Hub farmers. Jill notes, “A lot of the farms we use in the Food Hub are people we use in our restaurant (Trolley Stop). We know their stuff is good.” Bring It Food Hub has hired two fulltime employees and, due to an overwhelming response, is now offering a Fall Season CSA membership. Like their other memberships, there is a “Classic” subscription
with the basics, as well as a “Deluxe” subscription that offers a bit more variety for a few extra mouths at home. A helpful newsletter and updated blog allows subscribers the opportunity to learn about their farmers and the crops that are coming their way. You can visit their website at bringitfoodhub.com for more information. Joining a CSA can be very cost effective (just think about what you spend at a grocery chain). It practically forces people to eat healthier and enjoy a supper or two at home with the family. The knowledge of where food is coming from is a great resource and can allow a better night’s rest. And if you find yourself nervous that you simply cannot use all of your bounty, perhaps invest in a juicer: farm fresh is worth it.

Guests enjoyed posing with Roger Moore and Sean Connery, even if they were cardboard, and sipping martinis, the preferred cocktail of 007. Secret agents united to support the GPAC on this wonderful night. gpacweb.com Sheri & Ron Bishop

Campbell Clinic treated my mom like a champion. I knew Campbell Clinic’s world-class specialists treated pro athletes for the Grizzlies and Redbirds. So I took my mom to Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics when she had shoulder problems. She’s not a high-paid athlete, but her specialist treated her like a champ. Now she’s back in the game, which happens to be country line dancing. That’s why I trust the world’s best for my mom.

Majestic Lexington
Lexington is the heart of America’s thoroughbred racing industry, the Hollywood, if you will, of the industry known as the sport of kings. A morning watching the horses work on the track at Keeneland is a delight; the gates to the course are wide open, and one can wander through the stables or watch the workouts from the stands or along the rails. Racing at Keeneland takes place in April and October, but thoroughbred racing’s top trainers exercise their string of horses daily, no matter the weather. Following morning gallops, trainers, grooms, and jockeys meet up in the Track Kitchen -- a no-fuss, no-frills eatery where the day’s work is analyzed, rumors swapped, and a big breakfast will set you back about $5, max. There’s no admission to watch the workouts or to attend the sales, which are held in January, April, July, September, and November. The best equine-themed shopping in all of Lexington may well be at the racecourse; Keeneland’s gift shop is chock-full of fine lines of gifts and sportswear, including Barbour’s waxed hats and jackets, and colorful Hunter boots. Many of the 450-plus farms and breeders, including some of the big names that have produced the rock stars of the thoroughbred world -- Ashford Stud, Calumet, and Three 52 / 4Memphis

It’s a few minutes before sunrise on a dreary morning, cold and drizzly and miserable. Jockeys and grooms – all slight in build, male and female – sit on tiny racing saddles, their gorgeous, glossy mounts kicking up mud as they move along the track. It’s a magical sight, the marriage of rider and horse on a quiet, still morning – and no place better on earth to experience the majesty of the American thoroughbred than at Lexington’s Keeneland racetrack.

IF YOU GO Chimneys -- welcome visitors. You can hire a private guide, reserve a seat on a group tour, or call farms to make personal appointments. Most private tours are step-ons, meaning the guide joins you in your transportation, although some companies do offer transportation as well. If you decide to create your own tour, do call the farms in advance. Dropping by unannounced is simply taboo.
The Lexington Convention and Visitor’s Bureau website, visitlex. com, offers detailed information on Lexington’s equine attractions and horse tour companies, as well as dining and lodging options. Or, you can call (800) 845-3959 to get a guide to the city.
The Kentucky Horse Park celebrates the thoroughbred – and more than 50 breeds of horse, including Tennessee Walking Horses, hard-working draft horses and regal Arabians. The park features a robust schedule of equestrian competitions throughout the year, from polo matches to dressage and the illustrious Rolex Three Day Event every April.
Morning work at Keeneland is open to the public every day except Christmas, and races are held in April and October. Reserved seating for the races ranges from $8 - $20; general admission is $5. Admission to one of the track’s three dining rooms, which includes a general admission ticket and meal, ranges from $15 - $50. keeneland.com or (800) 456-3412.

This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper Reviewed by Kevin Dean, Executive Director, Litereracy Mid-South Maybe I’m jaded, but the book is always better than the movie. With a few notable exceptions like Fault in Our Stars, Hollywood has turned many great books into forgettable movies. Thank you, studio executives, for destroying future generations’ love of The Golden Compass, Beautiful Creatures, and Eragon. Before the movie version of Jonathan Tropper’s This is Where I Leave You is released in theaters on September 19th, I highly recommend reading the novel. Though the movie will feature the likes of Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman, and Rose Byrne, I worry that Jonathan Tropper’s signature acidic humor may be watered down and—God help me—they will probably change the satisfying but unresolved ending. Am I being pessimistic, despite the amazing cast? Well, let’s just say that the director is also responsible for Date Night and Night at the Museum. I’m not getting my hopes up.

A little backstory on how I came to love this book: On my way back from a trip to Brazil, I was stuck in an airport in a city whose name I can’t pronounce. My iPhone was dead and my other book was finished, so I wandered into a bookstore in the terminal to purchase something else to read. This is Where I Leave You was the only book in English for sale. Out of pure desperation, I purchased the book based solely on my inability to read Portuguese. By the time I had made
it back to the States, I had a new book to place on my Top Ten Favorite Books List. I’ve read every one of his books now. Tropper’s newest novel, One Last Thing Before I Go, weaves similar elements of family chaos, biting social commentary, and unrequited love. This is Where I Leave You, however, is far more accessible to a wider audience, though just as touching and funny. When Judd Foxman’s father passed away unexpectedly and asks his not-so-close family to sit shiva for seven days in his honor, all hell breaks loose. Having just lost his job and his wife to his slimy employer, messy family drama is exactly what the main character doesn’t need for comfort. If you’re a fan of Arrested Development, you’ll see why they cast Jason Bateman in the lead. Like his Arrested Development counterpart, the Judd Foxman character is a put-upon family man surrounded by a host of idiotic and scheming family members. When his hysterical, cheating, and newly pregnant wife shows up at the door during the funeral, all hell breaks loose. Anyone with a large family will certainly understand Foxman’s plight. Tropper’s books are never difficult reads, and they’re always funny and touching. If you’re going on vacation this July, this would be perfect beach reading. Prepare to laugh so hard you’ll snort Pina Colada out of your nose.
