Heber Springs

The crystal clear water in the 40,000 acre Greers Ferry Lake is a huge magnet for watersports, picturesque camping, hiking, and fishing. The lake was created when Greers Ferry Dam was built to provide electricity and flood control to the area. When water is released through the Dam, that is what creates the Little Red River. The water released through the dam at the bottom of the lake is cold, and trout thrive in cold water. The US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Greers Ferry National Hatchery began stocking the Little Red with Rainbows, Brooks, and Browns (now reproducing naturally), and Southern anglers embraced the newest challenge of fishing for trout. Fly fishing is a sport that requires practice and patience, and having a guide is key to learning. Chuck Farneth is one of the best fly fishermen in the world, and since 2004 he has made his home in Heber Springs. He not only shares his fishing knowledge with his guide services, but he also shares his faith through fishing and the beauty of North Central Arkansas. As Chuck and his wife, Sherry, made plans in 1992 to move from Pittsburg to Little Rock to join the staff of the Family Life organization, he thought his days of trout fishing were behind him because of typically warm-water temperatures in southern states. But only a week or so after he accepted a position with Family Life, the world-record largest Brown trout was caught in the Little Red River. So when the Farneths moved to Arkansas, Chuck brought along his fly fishing gear and continued in the sport he had loved since he was a child. In 2000, Chuck was selected as one of 12 fishermen worldwide to compete in the ESPN Great Outdoor Games in Lake Placid, NY, at the Olympic Center, site of 1980 Olympic games. “It’s like the Olympics for outdoors,” he said. In his first year, he won a Bronze Medal. But it was in 2001, when again he competed and came away with a Gold Medal that ministry became the focus of combining his faith with fly fishing. “My

Driving across Greers Ferry Dam borders on dangerous because of the temptation to look at the sweeping views of Greers Ferry Lake or the 200 foot drop to the Little Red River. Safely across the dam, the John F. Kennedy Overlook gives a panoramic view of both. The 35th President himself was on-hand in 1963 to dedicate the dam, in his last major public appearance just a few weeks before his fateful trip to Dallas.

ven if they are located two or three hours away, a few places are almost considered to be suburbs of Memphis, because so many locals pack up and head out on weekends to idyllic spots within easy driving distance. The hamlet of Heber Springs, Arkansas, is one such “suburb.” With Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red River, it is a little slice of heaven tucked into the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The 4Memphis team took a fashion-shoot-road-trip (see pages 28-32), and found a charming town, beautiful scenery, and got some trout fishing tips from a world-renowned angler.
wife said to me, ‘Ok, you’ve got the gold medal now. Are you going to use it for your glory or for God’s?’ That changed everything,” he said. He founded Outdoor Legacy, and began leading weekend outdoor retreats for fathers and sons. “Through the activities of fly fishing, rock climbing on Sugarloaf, and other activities, we create visuals for the Biblical principles of manhood,” Chuck explains. His definition of manhood that is taught and emphasized throughout the weekend is to: 1) reject passivity, 2) accept responsibility, 3) lead courageously, and 4) expect God’s greater rewards. The time outdoors bonds the fathers and sons as they create memories learning to be responsible, productive men. Chuck is the only competitor to have participated in all five of the Great Outdoor Games from 2000-2005. In 2014, he represented America in the World Masters Fly Fishing Championships in Chile. The four-man Team USA placed 4th, the highest showing in 30 years. For Chuck personally, he finished 7th in overall points in the world in that competition. What does Chuck hope anglers and visitors take away from their time in the beautiful Heber Springs area? “A satisfaction that the river can provide for you. You’re going to be productive, hopefully catch a few fish. If people can come to the river, get away from their everyday activities, relax a little bit and enjoy the water - it’s a natural air conditioner in the hot summer. The river provides a satisfaction and relaxation. Catching fish is a bonus.” For more information about Heber Springs, visit heber-springs.com and arkansas.com. Father Nicholas L. Vieron PASTOR EMERITUS at ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH By Lesley Harris Colvett; photography by Mark O. Ramirez & courtesy of Father Vieron Father Nicholas L. Vieron is a Renaissance man. At the age of 91, “Father V” lives each day to the fullest. Father V provides a wealth of knowledge about the Greek Orthodox faith, has been teaching a 14-week adult Greek class for 45 consecutive years, and until seven years ago was an avid racquetball player. Father V was born November 13, 1925, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Ironically, he lived right across the street from the first Greek Orthodox Church in the United States. Father V graduated high school when he was only 16 years old, then graduated from Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, Massachusetts, and married Bess, who was from Brooklyn, New York. Father V came to Memphis in 1955, when he was assigned to the Memphis Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. He also earned a Master’s Degree in History from Marshall University in Huntington, WV., and a Jurisprudence Degree from the University of Memphis School of Law. Bess worked as a Registered Nurse in Memphis for 42 years, and taught children of the Annunciation parish in the afternoon for 42 years as her “gift” to the church. Father V lights up when he talks about his family, “Bess and I are blessed with two sons, Lee, a local physician, and Paul a graduate of our HC seminary, 4 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.”
his church’s Retired Clergy Association, and for almost two decades he served as the editor of the monthly newsletter. “Over the 17 years, I never missed a deadline, even while in the hospital during my two bypass surgeries,” Father V says. There are many awards in Father V’s office at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on North Highland Street - including racquetball trophies and clippings from The Memphis Press-Scimitar and The Commercial Appeal newspapers. A couple of Memphis Touchdown Club football trophies sit on the shelves as well. “I’ve been the Chaplain for the Touchdown Club, so they gave me a lifetime membership. This is an activity that I started before my retirement, and I continue it now. I offer the prayers before all the meetings, and with the coaches...and it ends with the Liberty Bowl.” The Touchdown Club is held during the college football season, with various college coaches from area teams as guest speakers - Nick Saban from the University of Alabama, and Archie Manning of Ole Miss to name a few - and some coaches from as far away as Michigan and Notre Dame. His faith and Greek culture has truly impacted others in the Memphis community who are enrolled in his adult Greek Class at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Here are just a few of the touching compliments Father V has received in the handwritten student evaluations: “This class is the highlight of my week,” “Through your eyes, I have seen God” and “The passion you have for God and your homeland...you have made me more interested in Greek culture.”
In 1991 Father V retired, and the present pastor of the Annunciation Church is Father Simon Thomas. “He is the most admired, loved and appreciated person in the community; a great spiritual leader,” Father V says about Father Thomas. Retirement has been fun for Father V, because “that means no meetings”, but he certainly has not stopped. As Pastor Emeritus, Father V visited small parishes across the country that may not have had a priest at the time, and he remains active in the ecumenical life of the city, as well as the Memphis Ministers Association. Also during retirement, Father V was asked to create a newsletter for 40 / June 2017
Father V is passionate about the message Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood for, and on January 19, 2015, Father V received a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Be the Dream Legacy Award” for Keeping the Dream Alive. “Ever since Martin Luther King, Jr. day was declared a holiday, I have started my Greek class on that day - the third Monday of January - in honor of the fact that my students reflect a cross-section of people, the kind of world Dr. King envisioned,” Father V says. A phrase Father Vieron often includes in a prayer, especially before an Ecumenical group, is this: “Make us mindful, O Lord, that whether we worship in the Shadow of the Cross or near the Star of David or by some other symbol, we stand as brothers and sisters under the Fatherhood of our one God. Inscribe this truth, O Lord, indelibly in our hearts in black and white.”

Whether you head to the river to catch your own or go to Paradise Seafood or local market, fresh fish is perfect for a summer supper. THE CAPITAL GRILLE
Prosciutto Wrapped Sea Bass with Crab Salad Prosciutto Wrapped Sea Bass 2 7 ounce portions Sea Bass 4 pieces prosciutto 2 ounces butter
1 cup arugula 4 ounces jumbo lump crab 2 teaspoons lemon oil 1 pinch sea salt
Dry the fish with paper towels and season with kosher salt. Lay two prosciutto pieces per fish on a table and wrap the fish tightly overlapping the prosciutto. On medium heat, melt butter in a saute pan; once the butter has melted and is hot, sautĂŠ the fish until the prosciutto has browned slightly. Turn the sea bass over and place the pan in the oven at 350 degrees and roast for approximately 7 minutes.
Crab Salad with Whole Grain Mustard Beurre Blanc 4 ounces white wine 4 ounces unsalted butter ½ shallot, thinly sliced 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon peppercorns 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard Cut the butter into half inch pieces and set aside. In a 2 quart pot, add shallots, peppercorns, and wine over medium-high heat; allow to come up to a simmer and reduce by a half. To make the beurre blanc, whisk in one piece of butter at a time until melted; add lemon juice and whole grain mustard and mix until combined. In a small bowl, toss arugula, crab, lemon oil, and sea salt until salad is coated with oil. Top sea bass with crab salad, and spoon the mustard sauce around the fish. June 2017 / 45

Blackened Mahi Sandwich with Lemon Aioli
Gulf Grouper Florentine Roulade en Papillote
4 6 ounce mahi fillets, skinned blackening seasoning 4 ciabatta buns Lemon Aioli 4 ounces mayonnaise one lemon, zest and juice 3 dashes of hot sauce
green leaf lettuce beefsteak tomato slice avocado slices
Mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and set aside to use with sandwich.
Preparation: Preheat oven at 350 degrees. In a hot skillet place a little bit of olive oil, just enough to coat the bottom. Season mahi with the blackening seasoning and sear the fish on both sides until dark/light brown. Place in pre-heated oven for 7 minutes, or until fish reaches an inside temperature of 155 degrees. Toast ciabatta buns, spread the lemon aioli, and place Mahi on the bottom part. On the top part of the bun place the lettuce, tomato slices, avocado slices and French onions for garnish. Serve with French fries, sweet potato fries, or any other preferable side.
1 5 ounce grouper filet, butterflied 2 ounces sauted spinach 3 + 1 tablespoons leek 2 + 1 teaspoons garlic A few gratings of fresh nutmeg 2 carrots, julienne 1 rib celery, julienne
2 roma tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 lemon, thinly sliced 3 ounces white wine or other flavored steaming liquid oil, for glazing 2 sheets of parchment paper salt and pepper, to taste
Combine spinach, 1 tablespoon leek, 1 teaspoon garlic, and nutmeg. Spread spinach mixture on the underside of butterflied fish, leaving roughly one inch of fish exposed. Working from the covered side of fish, roll into a tight log with the excess flesh touching the presentation side of the roulade (the proteins in the flesh are what seal the roll). Lay down one sheet of parchment paper. In the center of this sheet, arrange lemon and tomato slices a galette (a wheel) alternating each iteration. Place remaining leek, celery, and carrot atop this “ scale”, insuring that some is still visible. Place fish on top of vegetables and glaze with oil. Season to taste. Put second sheet of parchment paper on top of fish and begin folding. Starting at the corner, fold in roughly ¼ of the way to the center, repeating all the way around the fish until a bag shape has been formed. Before you make your last fold to seal the bag, pour in the wine or other cooking liquid (I used a saffron tomato consommé). Seal the “bag” and glaze top with remaining oil (the glazing is not necessary, it just makes for a nice presentation). Bake in a 450 degree oven until desired doneness is reached, roughly 5 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish. Carefully place parchment bag on a serving platter and cut bag open tableside.

School is out. That used to be synonymous with “the performing arts are out for the summer, see you in September.” While things do slow down a bit, I was actually surprised in researching this listing by how much there still is going on in June – beside Boll Weevils, Levitt Shell concerts, the Orpheum summer movie series, and a plethora of educational & arts-related camps for your kids. It would be an easy
thing to create an entire magazine just listing the family-fun events, attractions, fundraisers, and many goings on in our area; I tend to highlight the local visual and performing arts simply because they may get less media attention. But all of these things together create a uniquely welcoming and enjoyable quality of life that is Memphis. I’ll see you out there!

Cecil + Sarah
I met Cecil in 2010 at a sorority/fraternity homecoming function. Fast forward to Spring 2012, which is where our story really began! After years of being only friends, we wanted to see each other more often and the next thing I knew we were dating! A little over 4 years later Cecil and I were heading out to meet friends for dinner when Cecil decided he wanted to make a quick pit stop onto Tiger Lane. We get out of the car and start walking…next thing I know he is DOWN ON ONE KNEE!! We will be getting married June 17, 2017. I could not be more excited to marry him and start our lives together!
JON SHARMAN
Matt and I are Chicago natives, Auburn alumni, and recently, Atlanta’s newest residents. Although we grew up leading paralleled lives, Matt and I didn’t meet until we were relocated to Tampa for work postcollege. With a little help from our mutual friends, Matt and I kept in touch after meeting New Year’s Eve and the rest is history! We were engaged to be married 2 years later in Charleston, South Carolina. We look forward to a lifetime of laughter, light heartedness, and love!

Colin and I have been together since March 2010. Sparks first flew at Christian Brothers High School prom where we both attended with different people. A month later in typical high school fashion, we had our first date at the one and only TCBY. I ordered cotton candy and he ordered rocky road. I knew that night this was going to be the man that I was going to marry. The past seven years have been amazing, and we cannot wait for December 30, 2017!!

Zach and I met in our high school musical, Fiddler on The Roof. Zach and I were both cast as townspeople, and the director thought we would look good in the background together as Husband and Wife. She even assigned three younger elementary and middle school students to be our children. 7 years and 10 countries later, we couldn’t be more excited to really become Husband and Wife.

Chip and I were set up on a blind date in October 2013. We went to The Fox and Hound to watch football, but it also happened to fall on the big Arkansas vs. Alabama football game. I was reluctant to go at first because I knew he is a die hard Bama fan, and I will forever ‘Call the Hogs’. Once the conversation started, it was like the game didn’t even matter. The Hogs lost terribly, but Chip never once rubbed it in that his team was better that night. After the date, I knew there was something special about Chip that I never wanted to lose. We’ve had so much fun the last 3 years, and I can’t wait for many more! We are so excited for September 16, 2017.

Josh + Taylor Josh and I met our sophomore year at Houston High School through a mutual friend. Over the past seven years, we have shared proms, our graduations, Mississippi State football games, and weekends at Pickwick Lake. On a family trip to Seaside, Florida, we were posing for family photos on the beach when Josh dropped to one knee and proposed! Conveniently, the photographer captured our special moment with our family around us. We look so forward to July 8, 2017, when we begin the rest of our lives together as “Mr. & Mrs.!”

Wedding of the Month
Barry Hillyer + Caroline Dale I met Barry when my best friend took him to our sorority date party! They obviously did not work out, but Barry and I had an instant connection. After 4 years of dating, Barry decided to pop the question April 15, 2016. I found my dream dress which was designed by Anne Barge, at Maggie Louise Bridal. Next, we chose Hayley Paige bridesmaids dresses from Bella Bridesmaids. Lee Sanders did a fabulous job designing a fly fishing basket cake because Barry loves to fly fish. We began the wedding day with mimosas, hair and makeup by Shawn Ware and Kasey Acuff. The wedding ceremony was held at Independent Presbyterian Church on December 17, 2016, followed by the reception at The Columns. Barry and I are huge Grizzlies fans so we gave our guests “Merry Grizzmas growl towels to go along with our Happy Hillyer Holidays theme! Our photographer, Loren Gifford, captured the entire evening and we have loved looking back at the photos. We enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon in Playa Mujeres before heading back home to celebrate Christmas with our families.

Dad to three, father to many
Mr. Reggie Davis fills father-figure role for Memphis families By Mary Elizabeth Whitmire and Sophie Stockstill Father’s Day is nearing. The quick, grab-a-card-from-Walgreens day sits in the middle of summer, compelling us to contemplate the necessity of fathers’ leadership. However inconvenient it may seem, this day is significant, marking the necessity of fathers in children’s lives. For Mr. Reggie Davis, father and executive director of Streets Ministries, this day is a testament to his leadership as both a father and leader in the community. Located in Downtown and East Memphis, Streets Ministries is a faith-based organization whose mission of encouraging the youth of Memphis to reach their full potential. Volunteers encourage less-fortunate youth, allowing them to find support that they may not receive otherwise. A mentor as well as a father to three girls, Davis’ experiences with parenting drive his work at Streets. While he ensures that his daughters have as many opportunities as possible, many children in Memphis are not as fortunate, with the poverty level among children reaching up to 43 percent. That is where Streets comes in, providing kids with the opportunities and relationships to encourage youth to thrive, regardless of their situations. Davis benefits just as much from these relationships, as they often teach him how to grow as a father. Streets has “taught [me] some of the most important lessons a father can learn,” Mr. Davis said. Seeing the many fatherless children who come in and out of Streets, Mr. Davis sees the impact he has on his children and how important being a good father truly is. Constantly shaping Mr. Davis’ grace and sensitivity toward children, his work at Streets has also taught Mr. Davis the most notable lesson as a father — to listen, not to fix. Through spirited, driven leaders like Mr. Davis, the students at Streets are equipped with the resources necessary to effectively shape their futures. Streets’ impact on Memphis’ youth is immeasurable, providing opportunities, mentors, and education where it is
most needed. Ultimately, people like Mr. Davis and organizations like Streets give Memphis’ youth the ability not only to endure, but to prevail. For that reason, Father’s Day celebrates leaders and fathers alike. Hutchinson freshman Sydney Davis is the oldest daughter to Reggie Davis. Due to her father working frequently as the Executive Director at Street’s Ministries, Sydney constantly shares her dad with the kids and families of Streets. “He has to be at work a lot, but I understand it’s for a good reason,” Sydney said. “I love his job and all the people he works with.” By seeing a variety of family situations, Mr. Davis obtains the role as a father-figure to different families that go to Streets Ministries. Because of this, Sydney sees her father as a role model to not only herself but other kids, as well. To help out at Streets, like her father, Sydney volunteers by tutoring elementary kids on the basics of literacy through a program known as Streets Smart. Besides serving at the literacy program, Sydney also hangs out and talks with the people there, or she helps her dad out with whatever he needs her to do. When she and her dad aren’t at Streets, they enjoy watching Marvel movies together and discussing how they connect. “We are mostly goofy,” Sydney said. “We always joke around with each other or mock one another.” Ultimately, because her dad is a mentor and father-figure to many families, Sydney has become grateful for what she has, especially her relationship with her dad. “I don’t know how I would survive without him,” Sydney said.

MEMPHIS IMPACT Meet the Staff Photography by Lindsey Lissau Biographies by Indiviual Staffers
My name is Alice Crenshaw, and I am a junior at St. George’s Independent School. I work as a graphic designer and photographer for Memphis Impact. Away from the magazine, I enjoy spending as much time as I can outside, whether it is backpacking, camping, playing lacrosse, or water skiing. I spend a large amount of my time taking photos, painting, drawing and playing guitar. With my hectic schedule I find it very important to spend quality time with my friends and my family, so I am constantly working to stay involved with them. I come from a large family and being with them and hearing their stories inspires my art, so I believe that is the most important of my life to me.
My name is Ellie Weeks, and I am a sophomore at Hutchison School. I serve as a writer, editor, and designer, and I am very excited to be a part of Memphis Impact. I have interviewed Emerging Designer Jayla Slater and constructed the events page that focused on formals and high school signings. In my spare time, I play soccer, run track, and spend time at my youth group. I am part of the yearbook team for Hutchison, where I have grown to love graphic design, serve as my grade representative for the Service Learning Council, and am involved in both Rogers Scholars and Hutchison Invests as well. I have really enjoyed my experience so far with this magazine and am looking forward to see where Memphis Impact will go.
My name is Merrill Culpepper, and I am a sophomore at St. Mary’s. I am the stylist for Memphis Impact and I am so excited to be a part of this amazing addition to 4Memphis. I have always loved fashion and how confident someone’s style can make them feel. Along with working for Memphis Impact, I play soccer and lacrosse for my school, and I am also involved in YoungLife. I cannot wait to continue styling for Memphis Impact and to see where the magazine goes in the future.
My name is Arabella Hamm, and I am a junior at St. Agnes Academy. I am a writer for Memphis Impact. Recently, I interviewed Penny Hardaway and winners of his essay contest. In addition to interviewing and writing, I take photographs for articles. When I'm not writing for 4Memphis Impact, I play lacrosse and attend Model United Nations and Youth in Government conferences. I am an Ambassador for the Facing History and Ourselves Program and will be Editor of the 2017-2018 St. Agnes Yearbook. Memphis Impact presents teens with an opportunity to creatively express themselves and I am so thankful and thrilled to be a part of this project.
My name is Mary Elizabeth Whitmire, and I am a junior at St. Agnes Academy. I am delighted to be a part of Memphis Impact, for which I write and take pictures. Outside of the magazine, I devote most of my time to creating art or participating in theatre. I am also active as the president of an organization with Madonna Learning Center and an upcoming editor of my school’s art and literary magazine, Calliope. I am so excited to see how Memphis Impact will inspire the future leaders of Memphis.
My name is Margo Valadie and I am a junior at St. George’s Independent School. I am so excited to get the opportunity to be a part of the Memphis Impact staff. I have helped work on the layout of the Emerging Fashion Designers Q&A, and look forward to contributing my photography and design skills to stories in the future. At my school, I am the Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook staff, a student ambassador, and can always be seen with a bag of camera equipment. I am thrilled to be on Memphis Impact and cannot wait to work on future issues with this super talented staff.
My name is Madison Grinder, and I’m a sophomore at Hutchison School. I’m honored to be a part of the Memphis Impact staff as a writer and photographer, and I have loved working on projects, including Memphis Fashion Week and Emerging Bands and Artists in Memphis. Aside from my position at Memphis Impact, I play volleyball and lacrosse for my school and play competitive lacrosse with No Excuse. I also spend my time volunteering at many service organizations, such as the Salvation Army, Su Casa, and the special needs program at Second Presbyterian Church. I’m so excited to be a part of the growth of 4Memphis Impact and can’t wait to see it develop.
My name is Carolyn Lane, and I am a junior at St. George’s Independent School. I am excited to be a part of Memphis Impact and hope to continue writing articles and designing pages in the future. As Memphis Impact’s final layout editor, in addition to my own pages each issue, I also construct the final InDesign file to be sent to press each issue. I will be Editor-in-Chief of my school’s newsmagazine next year, which won best newspaper/magazine in Tennessee the past two years. I am the editor-in-chief of my school’s literary magazine, a Bridge Builder, and the coordinator of book club. I was chosen to represent Tennessee in the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Program, which accepts one journalist per state. I look forward to seeing where the magazine goes in the future.
My name is Langston Myers, and I am a sophomore at St. Mary’s Episcopal School. I am the Editor of Memphis Impact, and I am an avid writer, which is my inspiration for the creation of Memphis Impact. In my free time I cheer for Christian Brothers High School, play lacrosse, and write. I enjoy writing poetry, creative writing, blogs, short stories and articles. I am elated to see where the Memphis Impact magazine will go, and how it will help the staff grow and learn.

This Father’s Day My mom has always told me that everyday is “Child’s Day”. Since she works all day, yet never fails to do the dishes at night even though she isn’t always thanked, she probably has a point. Mother’s and Father’s Day are both holidays that can be overlooked, but to parents who can also often be overlooked, these days should be filled with appreciation for the actions of parents that often go unnoticed. Many people tell me that I look just like my mom and act just like my dad, and I have always taken both of these statements as compliments. I have always thought, though I would deny saying this, that my dad is one of the smartest and funniest people I know, so if my sarcasm matched his, I was satisfied. Most good fathers know it is their job to prepare their kids for life after they turn 18, after they grow up. In terms of my dad, this means spatting out life lessons at any given moment that occasionally cause an eye roll or two in response. But in all seriousness, these lessons have shaped and formed who I am today. My dad, like many other fathers of girls, is not a big fan of boys my age. Trusting some 16 year old boy with his daughter is not his forte, which can be annoying from my perspective. But at the end of the day, his constant reminders saying, “He better hold the door for you,” or, “Do not go out with him if he asks you out over text,” have taught me a larger lesson: self-respect. He has taught me that there is a standard of how
people should treat me and how I should treat people; that everyone deserves to be respected. He taught me that when people don’t give you the respect you deserve, it’s your right to stand up for yourself. Some of the more important lessons though, I have learned just by watching my dad. He has shown me that strength is not something you are necessarily born with, but rather strength is something that is acquired as you face the problems that life throws at you. My dad has shown me that no matter how many times you get knocked down, what counts is getting back up. Ever since he taught me how to ride a bike, he has said that bruises and scratches aren’t worth crying about. This metaphor for life has helped me to understand that strength isn’t about how hard you fight, it’s about how you get back up. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a father who is around to teach them these kinds of lessons. Single moms and fatherless homes have become much more of a social norm during the past couple of decades. In some cases, stepdads, coaches, teachers, or even moms that assume both parental roles can play just as an important role in raising a child as a biological father does. That being said, I can guarantee that every single person, with a father or without, has someone to thank this Father’s Day. Langston Myers
