T I M E LE SS This past President’s Day weekend I spent much of it binge watching two different shows that were based on time travel with my good friend Gabby Perez. I would claim Gabby as my adopted daughter but I think her parents might have something to say about that, nonetheless I have had the privilege of being friends with Gabby these past 13 years, and hopefully have been a positive influence on her life. Gabby and my daughter, Bizzy, have been best friends since they were two, she has traveled with us and spent many a night over at our house. Gabby’s family was traveling, but she had school responsibilities and had to stay in Memphis this past weekend.

Normally that would have meant a long weekend holed up in the playroom doing whatever teenage girls do, but this weekend the busy schedules of both girls left them coming and going at different times, leaving Gabby at home binge watching with me.

Those of you who have read my letter these past five years may be fully aware that I am a lover of history and in another life, I would come back as a history teacher. Timeless, a new television series launched this year, revolves around a group of time travelers going back into American history to try and change certain outcomes of modern life by changing events in the past. The show does a nice job of bringing out little known or forgotten pieces of history around such events as the Hindenburg Disaster, the Space Race, the Nuclear Arms Race, Watergate and many more. The show’s main theme is built on the thesis that if you change the circumstances around one person in history, you will change the present.

I don’t know about time travel, but I do know that treating or mentoring individuals in our lives can have a dramatic impact on the world in which we live. If you interview any successful person, or for that matter a greatly troubled person, they will tell you the story of a

person or small group of people that had a big impact on their life. It may be their parents, a teacher, first boss or childhood friend but it is the individuals around them in their vulnerable years that help set the direction of who they have become. The promise of Psalms 145 verse 9 is a promise from the Lord to bless all those who have a positive effect on those God brings in each of our lives.

Memphis recently lost one of its great servants, Dr. Lynn Conrad, known simply as Conrad by all that knew him. Conrad didn’t have to go back in time to make a difference; he made a difference every day of his life sacrificially giving of himself to heal those in need. In the halls of The Conrad Pearson Clinic and hospital room with his patients, he was well-known for the afterhours care for those in critical need. The offer of his cell phone number to his patients was the rule, not the exception.

Conrad’s compassion for his patients allowed him to leave a mark, which many are grateful for. Each of us is called to make a difference in the lives of others. We may not all be doctors caring for the needs of 30 to 40 patients a day, instead you may be someone who makes a living changing tires or checking someone out at the grocery store.

It is fun to think about what we would do if we had the power to go back in time and change history, but the 9th verse of the 145 Psalms gives us the power to change the future of our fellow Memphians by having compassion and loving those we interact with daily.

Members of the The River Oaks Garden Club enjoyed a lovely night of dinner and dancing at the Memphis Hunt & Polo Club. Arrangements of Birds of Paradise and burnt orange and gold brocade tablecloths reflected the “A Night In Paradise” theme. A signature cocktail, the Ocean Breeze, was served, and The Ron Anderson Combo provided the live music. Guests took home a festive party favor in honor of a this memorable night - a small bottle of Cruzan aged rum from a 200-yearold distillery in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

ow does one find their place within the Memphis community? A place that is warm and welcoming, but that oozes exuberance and strength. A diverse place valuing the songs of yesterday and the contemporary movement of today. A place where no one is afraid to fall, and everyone is ready to soar. There is such a place, and I, like many others, have found it in Ballet Memphis.

Memphis’s gifted performing arts company and school have always given back to the community with their breathtaking pieces. As a student of the arts, I love to twirl, leap, and spin, but there has always been a deeper yearning to share in another way how wonderful dancing makes me feel. Luckily, I have had many opportunities to share my joy along with my fellow ballerinas of Youth Ballet Memphis.

Two years ago, I was given my first taste of moments to come by helping the kids of Gaston Park Community Center. The center is a part of Knowledge Quest, a program dedicated to promoting a supportive community with kid’s activities. Among their options is a fun dance program, ready for kids to get up and move their feet.

Teaming up with a little girl in the program, I helped her accomplish piqué turns and arabesques for a show that would be performed at the center. After our number, I was the proudest mentor out there as she rocked to a 50s bop and a rhythmic Afro-jazz number.

I had found a new passion. I readily joined a group of Youth Ballet Memphis dancers to assist in family free days. At the craft table, the younger girls, after choosing a color, get to make tutus. It is a great way to get to know the little ballerinas and their families who come to the professional shows. My favorite experience with tutus would have been working with the Memphis Botanic Garden for an event with playful fairies and gnomes. Donning pixie wings in

the garden allowed me a lot more time to get to know the kids. Surrounded by flowers and trees, it was pure magic to happen upon a fairy circle for those kids.

Whenever the Ballet Memphis professional company is ready for a show, my fellow ballet students and I readily sign up to volunteer usher for all of our teachers and role models. Opening house, tearing tickets, and seating audience members, we do it all for those who give us so much. Afterwards we clean up, leaving the venue ready for the next performance.

Every year, I, as well as other local dancers, have the privilege to dance in the Nutcracker at the Orpheum Theater. Two of the show days are allocated for underprivileged schools, giving them an opportunity to experience the classic tale of Christmas. The kids are a fantastic audience, shocked by a toy soldier battle, awed by “snow” and fog, and surprised by the magic of pyrotechnics. The best moment would have to be when the curtain rises in Act II to a stage transformed by lovely angels and fog. Their faces as seen from the stage are what performing is all about.

In an opposite season, another growing tradition unites Memphis in dance. Last year’s National Dance Day from the Dizzy Feet Foundation was located right outside the Memphis Zoo. The Dizzy Feet Foundation, founded

by Nigel Lythgoe from “So You Think You Can Dance,” promotes dance everywhere and calls for America to be fit.

With modern/pop choreography to new songs, anyone can learn and have a ball doing it. The Memphis summer may have been at its hottest, but with “Dance Like Yo Daddy”

by Meghan Trainor, everyone had a good time.

With dance and Ballet Memphis, many others like me have found a place in Memphis. In moving to their new location in Overton Square, Ballet Memphis hopes to draw you into a friendly and supportive world where you too can ‘find your place.’

Youth Villages Soup Sunday has become a wonderful, family event each winter, and in its 28th year, the 2017 was as fabulous as ever. Delicious soups prepared by some of the best restaurants in Memphis were served, and there were many kid-friendly activities for children. Soup Sunday events have raised nearly $1 million for the various programs that Youth Villages offers.

IN THE BEGINNING “Lots of ideas originate from a draping that I have started in my New York sample room, or a sketch I’ve done at my desk. I sketch constantly, and my design team supports with additional designs that I will approve or tweak to fit the line.

I’m usually inspired by a recent trip to an art gallery or museum show, which was the case for my Spring 2017 collection, or my latest adventure in NYC or abroad.”

CREATION TAKES SHAPE “Concept. Sketch. Create.

Most of my runway pieces are made in my sample room. I work with patternmakers in-house to make the garments come to life, making my tweaks along the way.

Each season I shop fabric mills to see the latest innovations and developments coming out of Europe and Asia. Our prints, embellishments, and embroideries are created in-house, specific to each season.

Special embroideries and embellishments usually are added overseas, but all final touches are made in our offices. I find that attention to detail is really what my customer responds to.”

March roars in like a lion and out like a lamb goes the old saying. Given the very real possibilities of 40 degree weather one day and 70 degrees the next, truly, all things are possible. And in March as the arts calendar transitions into full swing, we are treated to amazing variety: engaging lectures & talks and a family-friendly chalk festival, to the sight of 230,000 tulips in bloom to the sounds of one of America’s most innovative opera festivals. In the Memphis area we are blessed by the artists and artisans, performers and volunteers, patrons and supporters who work for weeks and months and years to make this all possible. LITERACY IS KEY LUNCHEON N OT E S The annual “Literacy is Key” luncheon is a fun-filled event to help fight illiteracy in the Mid South. Since 2011, the Memphis Area KKG Alumnae Association has donated over $140,000 to local literacy organizations, primarily First Book MidSouth and Literacy Mid-South. Through a partnership with groups such as First Book, there’s been a direct impact on fighting illiteracy, and touched hundreds of low-income children in the Mid-South. The luncheon also served as a celebration of three authors, Elin Hilderbrand, Karen White and Deborah Wiles.

Cooking and baking – contrary to what some may believe, are not one in the same. Yes, baking is a type of cooking, but a passion for cooking does not necessarily mean you fancy baking and vice-versa.

Many exceptional chefs all over the world will admit that they cannot and will not bake. As a chef who is completely self-taught, cooking always came very natural to me. Baking, not so much.

In my past life – only a little over a year ago – I was in the young professional’s world, and cooking was only something done in my spare time. I’d often have lunch or stop for coffee at Porcellino’s – a great excuse to be around delicious food mid-day when I couldn’t be in my own kitchen. I would sit in the charming little restaurant in my pencil skirt and heels, sipping a cappuccino, watching through the bakery and butcher windows, hoping that one day I could trade my blazer for an apron. Soon enough, I got the opportunity and started my business, Andrea’s Cooktales.

While my cooking business kept me busy from the get-go, I knew learning to bake would be an enduring experience, and if I ever learned anywhere, I wanted it to be at the celebrated Porcellino’s so I took a part-time job in their bakery to broaden my horizons. It was head pastry chef, Kayla Palmer, who put me to work and taught me more than I thought I’d ever know about baking.

At only 25 years old, Kayla has proved herself as an exceptional chef – both savory and sweet. While her efforts are now focused on sweet creations, an impressive resume, a strong work ethic, and serious talent are evident in all she does. She attended one of the world’s top culinary schools, The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa, California (think alumni Anthony Bourdain, Cat Cora, Michael Symon, and Charlie Palmer – to name a few) and worked for the City Grocery Restaurant Group under Chef John Currence in Oxford, Mississippi where she met Michael Hudman and Andy Ticer of the Enjoy A|M Restaurants. She moved to Memphis, and has worked for A|M restaurants since.

It takes a special kind of person to have a true passion and gift for baking – you must be good at (and not mind) following directions, patience and precision is imperative, and a little of this and a dash of that with a taste or two along the way doesn’t really cut it – Kayla is a mix of it all with a dash of creativity. She let me sit down with her for a little Q&A to learn more about her background and discuss what makes Porcellino’s bakery so remarkable.

You told me at first you were a savory chef. How did you get involved with pastry?

During culinary school, we had a course on pastry, and I knew I was going to enjoy it. I realized then that I had a little more of an affinity for the flavors in pastry. When I moved here I staged for Andrew Michael at first because I really wanted to work for the company and started to kind of touch on desserts again. Then I got hired on at Hog (& Hominy) and always liked doing the pies. I went back to Andrew Michael, sticking with desserts, and even put some on the menu. When they said they wanted to open Porcellino’s (becoming the head pastry chef)

Pastry is a different kind of sense of urgency than savory. There’s a lot more prep work that has to be done ahead of time but everything has to stay fresh so you have to know how much to make each day.

There’s also lot more precise measurement and little things that you do along the way to make a huge difference in the outcome – it’s just detailed in its own way. You can’t always taste things as you go, and the less you mess around with something (in pastry), the better.

What are the challenges and rewards of baking?

One of the challenges is when something doesn’t come out right or the whole batch is off. You set high standards for yourself in pastry, and when something doesn’t come out the right way, it’s frustrating. As for rewards, I always love the compliment, “This reminds me of something my grandmother made.” Food is always a temporary reward – it feels good to make someone happy with it. Chefs, in a weird way, are people pleasers, which can obviously be rewarding and challenging.

What are your favorite things to bake?

I’m always going to say laminating and rolling croissants. I don’t necessarily look forward to it every day, but it’s always something I’m very proud of – when you laminate the dough, and you roll it, and see that it comes out right. Having learned it and practiced it, it’s something I never want to forget how to do.

What’s a must-have pastry item at Porcellino’s?

The plain croissant is often surpassed by the chocolate, and there’s something about the beautiful flavors of the yeast and the salt and the dough in the plain croissants. Morning buns are my favorite, and I think it’s one of those things Memphis isn’t as familiar with so they’re often passed up. They’re pretty much a sugar laminated croissant with different flavors in them – ours have that (unique) fennel pollen, and anyone who tries them gets hooked.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a better home-baker?

Read a lot and bake a lot. I’m really a more hands-on learner, and good baking comes from practice. Phyllo Brownie

1 cup all purpose flour 3 eggs ½ pound butter 8 ounce bittersweet chocolate 2 cups sugar Cream sugar and butter together till light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time until incorporated. Next, add melted chocolate then add flour. Pour mixture into brownie pan and bake at 350 for 35 minutes; allow to cool in refrigerator.

ICING 7 ounce semi-sweet chocolate 1/2 cup heavy cream Bring cream to simmer; pour over chocolate and blend together. Pour mixture over cooled brownie. Let brownie setup, then cut into squares.

Melt 2 ounces butter, and thaw 2 sheets of filo dough. Butter the filo dough and place brownie into center. Fold filo dough around brownie then butter 2nd sheet and wrap brownie again. Bake for 6 minutes at 325 degrees. Place on plate and ice cream serve with sauce of your choice

Challah Bread 2 pounds plus 6 ounces high gluten bread flour 3 ounces granulated sugar 3 ounces egg yolks 3 whole eggs

3 ounces olive oil 13 ounces water 2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 ounces dry yeast

In a bowl, whisk water and yeast together. Let sit for 5 minutes to activate yeast. Add sugar to feed yeast and let set for another 3 minutes. Transfer to a mixer with a dough hook attachment.

Place the rest of the ingredients except the salt and turn the mixer on a low speed. Let the dough come together for 5 minutes, still on a low speed, and add the salt. Turn the speed up to medium and let the dough go for another 3 minutes. Once the dough is complete transfer to a greased bowl, cover with plastic and place in a warm dry area. Once the dough has doubled in size cut dough in half. With the half cut into thirds. At this point you should have 6 portions of dough. Gently rope out the portions for the braid and line them next to one another. (3 pieces per loaf) Connect the pieces and braid the Challah pinching the ends of the braids. Place loaves in a proofer and let double in size.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Egg wash the bread and bake for 10 minutes. Rotate bread and bake for another 5 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.

NAPA CAFÉ

Tres Leches Cake Nonstick cooking spray, for the cake pan 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the cake pan 1 tablespoon baking powder 4 large eggs, separated 1 ½ cups sugar ½ cup whole milk

1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk 1 12 ounce can evaporated milk 2 cups heavy cream, divided 3 tablespoons orange liqueur (recommended: Grand Marnier) 1 tablespoon powdered sugar ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray with non-stick cooking spray then flour a 10-inch cake pan with 2-inch high sides; line with parchment paper and grease the parchment paper.

Mix the flour and baking powder in a medium bowl. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer with the whisk attachment, whip the egg whites until frothy. With the mixer running, gradually add the sugar and beat to stiff peaks. Beat in the yolks, 1 at a time, blending well after each addition. Add the flour mixture in 3 additions, alternating with the whole milk in 2 additions.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cool the cake slightly, about 10 minutes, then invert onto a platter with 1-inch high sides.

Pierce the top of the cake all over with a thick skewer. Mix the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, 1 cup heavy cream and orange liqueur in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture over the cake while warm. Cover and refrigerate until cold, about 3 hours or overnight.

Combine the remaining 1 cup heavy cream and powdered sugar in a medium bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream onto top of the cake and sprinkle with the ground cinnamon.

King Crab Pot Pie With Heirloom Carrots & English Peas ROUX ¼ pound butter ¼ pound all-purpose flour Filling: 1 pound steamed, picked king crab meat 1 cup English peas, blanched 1 cup rainbow carrots, blanched and chopped rainbow

carrots ¼ cup celery, diced ¼ cup yellow onion, diced 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 2 quarts seafood or crab stock For the crust: 1 sheet puff pastry

In heavy-bottom sauce pot, melt the butter on medium heat until fully liquefied. Slowly stir in the flour until fully incorporated. Allow to cook for 7 minutes, stirring constantly so mixture does not brown.

Set aside and allow to cool to room temperature.

In a separate heavy-bottom stock pot, bring pot up to temperature on high heat and add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add celery and onion and a pinch of salt and sauté until onions are translucent (approx. 7 mins). Add seafood or crab stock and bring to a boil.

Using a whisk, slowly incorporate the room temperature roux making sure it is fully incorporated and not clumping up. Once roux is all in, bring the mixture to a boil for 2 minutes. Next reduce heat to

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Lightly sprinkle a sheet pan with flour. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, soda and salt together to combine. Make a well in the center and stir in the buttermilk (as needed) with a wooden spoon. **You may not need all of the liquid; you may need more. Add enough to bring the dough together in a shaggy ball, taking care to not overmix.

Lightly turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead

briefly. Shape into a 2 inch thick disc and place on the prepared pan. Deeply score the dough in a big “X” right across the dough and bake until golden brown, about 30-35 minutes.

For the butter, combine all of the ingredients together in a food processor until the parsley is chopped and the butter is whipped.

Add the cream if you would like a lighter butter. If using salted butter, omit the added salt. Makes one loaf.

Raspberry Mille Feuille This recipe is meant to make 8 pastries.

FEUILLETAGE 500g flour 10g salt

250g water 300g butter

Mix together to create dough; let sit for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread out the dough and place butter in the middle.

Tour the dough 6 times. Roll the dough out very thin and place on parchment paper lined baking sheet; bake 25 minutes.

COCONUT TUILE 25g flour 6 eggs 5g vanilla

200g shaved coconut 200g sugar

Mix all ingredients in a bowl; let sit for 30 minutes. Put mixture into piping bag. Lay parchment paper on a baking sheet. Using the piping bag, create half dollar sized dollops until the mixture is gone. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

PASTRY CREAM 1 liter milk 200g egg yolks 90g corn starch

200g sugar 50g vanilla 200g butter

Heat milk in a pot on the stove. In a bowl, add sugar and yolks- mix well. Add cornstarch and vanilla. Once the milk is boiling, stir in the mixture and cook for 2 minutes then quickly remove from heat. Allow it to cool. Using a mixing bowl, whip the butter and then add the mixture.

Once you have done all this, it’s time to build the Raspberry Mille Feuille! To make one pastry, start by cutting 3 identically sized rectangles. On top of the bottom pastry, alternate raspberries and pastry cream (using piping bag). Place the second pastry ont op and repeat raspberry and pastry cream, then top with 3rd pastry. Use coconut tuile for decoration. You can also fill raspberries with fresh Interim Jam and use as decoration as well!

Citrus Baked Chicken with Cannellini Beans Citrus Baked chicken with cannellini bean serves 4 CHICKEN 4 each medium size chicken breast 1 each lime zest and juice with bone Salt and pepper to taste 1 each lemon zest and juice 1 tsp minced garlic 1 each orange zest and juice 2 oz. olive oil In a mixing bowl mix all the ingredients, add the chicken breast and let it sit for at least one hour. In a hot skillet place the chicken breast skin side down and let it cook for about 30-45 seconds and the remaining of the marinate and put it in a 350˚F oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes or until 165˚F Internal temperature.

CANNELLINI BEANS 2 cups of cook cannellini beans 1 oz olive oil 1 oz cold butter 1 each spring of thyme Half oz. of minced garlic 2 oz roasted red pepper diced or julienne

3 oz julienne shallots 4 oz chicken broth or stock Pinch of red pepper flakes 4 oz of fresh spinach

In a large hot skillet put the oil, onion, roasted red pepper, thyme, and cook for about 2 minutes at medium heat. Add the garlic and cannellini beans with chicken broth and let it cook until is thick like stew consistency. Then add salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, spinach and butter. Mix everything very well and divide in four equal portions for serving; place the chicken on top and garnish with cherry tomatoes and thyme on top.

and ready to go before you begin. This means not only your sugar and vanilla measured out, but butter softened, flour sifted, and eggs at room temperature. Baking is a science and a small amount of preparation beforehand will make all of the difference!

QUALITY AND FRESHNESS FIRST Make sure that you’re using top quality ingredients. Most baked goods have few ingredients or achieve their flavor from a few key ingredients – vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, citrus, herbs. By using the highest quality ingredients you are ensuring that your finished baked treat will taste delicious and showcase the work put into creating it. Also, make sure that you are using fresh product, especially when it comes to yeast, baking soda and baking powder. If any of these are expired, or have “lost their punch” you won’t achieve the necessary rise to your breads, quick breads or cookies.

A HOT OVEN IS A HAPPY OVEN Always make sure your oven is preheated before baking. In many cases, the oven temperature can make a big difference in not only the color of the finished product, but also the texture and rise. If you’re unsure of the accuracy of your oven, having an oven thermometer on hand is a great way to identify the true temperature of your oven. If baking multiple pans at the same time, make sure to rotate the pans during the cooking time. This will help to ensure even baking, as well as help mitigate any “hot spots” that may be present in your oven. If baking multiple batches on a few trays, make sure to cool the pans completely between each batch. Placing cool dough on hot pans will actually start the baking process!

to Perform At The Orpheum In Memphis A Prairie Home Companion Creator to Tell Tales and Sing Songs from Lake Wobegon

O

n March 10th, Garrison Keillor, the creator of PBS’ “A Prairie Home Companion” and one of the most prolific American storytellers of all time, will take the stage at the Orpheum Theatre for an evening of stories and songs. He will be joined by wpecial musical guests, and “A Prairie Home Companion” alums Rich Dworsky and Heather Masse.

Offering insights from his journey as one of America’s greatest teller of tales, Keillor typically captivates audiences with his unique blend of comedy, charisma and wisdom.

The writer and humorist is best known for his popular live radio variety show, which he hosted from 1974 to 2016. The Minnesota Public Radio show attracted over 4 million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations each week. Keillor created the fictional Minnesota town Lake Wobegon as the setting of many of his radio skits and books.

Keillor is also the host of the daily radio and online program, The Writers Almanac, and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, Good Poems: American Places. A best-selling author, he has published more than two-dozen books, including Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims, and Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny.

In 2006, Keillor played himself alongside a cast that included Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin and Kevin Kline, in the critically acclaimed film adaptation of A Prairie Home Companion, directed by Robert Altman.

With Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards to his credit, Keillor has also been honored with the National Humanities Medal, and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Keillor began his radio career in 1969 with Minnesota Educational Radio, which later became Minnesota Public Radio. He aired a show he called “A Prairie Home Entertainment” during drive-time on KSJR FM at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN. The show departed from the station’s usual presentation of classical music, and created a local stir. In 1970, his first story appeared in The New Yorker. Keillor resigned from the radio show in February of 1971 protesting what he saw as management’s meddling in his playlist. As a protest, on one broadcast, he only played the Beach Boys’ “Help Me, Rhonda” when it was time for a musical selection. When Keillor returned to the station in October, his show was called, A Prairie Home Companion.

He’s said that “PHC” was inspired by the 1973 story he wrote about the Grand Ole Opry for The New Yorker. He had been featuring local musicians playing live on his morning radio show at that time, but

then moved it to Saturday night in 1974 to begin a live variety show featuring musical guests, a cast, a series of running skits and sponsor parodies.

In 1987, Keillor took a break from PHC to host a live radio show in New York City, but in 1992 returned to St. Paul, again using the A Prairie Home Companion name, to broadcast on Saturday nights for the next 24 years.

Keillor took the radio company on the road broadcasting from theaters throughout the country and around the world. More frequently, Keillor has appeared in a one-man show, in the style of Will Rogers or Mark Twain, telling stories and giving his audiences non-stop, doublebarreled doses of his humor. He has said that he particularly enjoys this format, and that the end of PHC will now allow him time to perform this way in more places. PHC has continued with Chris Thile as its host.

On March 10th, Keillor will be joined by Richard Dworsky and Heather Masse. Dworsky is a composer who appears weekly as pianist, bandleader, and music director in Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band from A Prairie Home Companion. Massee is a member of the Billboard-charting folk group, The Wailin’ Jennys, and has performed at hundreds of venues across the world. She has been a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, both as a solo performer and as a member of The Jennys.

You probably know him as “Too Tall,” the funny, friendly bartender at Erling Jensen Restaurant, who has created a successful food and beverage business as well. Melvin “Too Tall” Moore has never met a stranger, and he lights up the room with his jovial, larger-than-life personality.

Too Tall is tall, 6’6”, and most of us physically look up to him, even those who don’t have to call him Too Tall. Too Tall recalls with a laugh, “When someone even seven feet tall calls me Too Tall, it’s pretty cool, because Marc Gasol looks down at me and says, ‘Hey Too Tall’.”

It is funny stories like this that make it so enjoyable to visit with Too Tall. I sat down with Melvin and his wife Judith, and learned more about the affable barkeep and his family.

Too Tall even met his wife, Judith, based on his height. It was six years ago, and Judith was with some of her girlfriends, who she refers to as the nickname “the squirrel club”, at dinner one night at Erling Jensen, and they were saying how Judith should meet a man, but Judith seemed too picky, so the friends asked her what is the most important thing she’s looking for in a man and Judith said “He has to be tall.” Right after Judith said that, Too Tall walked in the door at Erling Jensen and her friend Mearl Purvis, FOX 13 news anchor, - said “What about Too Tall?”. A few weeks later, after a thorough vetting by friends, Too Tall and Judith had their first date. They got married October 15, 2011.

Too Tall is not that tall at home - Judith’s three sons are Amal Black 6’4”, Bilal Black 6’7” and Tarik Black 6’9”. Tarik is an NBA basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers. He graduated from Ridgeway High School, where he played basketball, and then played for University of Memphis 2010-2013 as part of Coach Josh Pastner’s first recruiting class. Tarik played for the Houston Rockets the first half of his rookie year in the NBA. That year the Rockets were playing the Grizzlies the day after Christmas, so Tarik asked Too Tall if he would have the Rockets team over for a Christmas dinner. Too Tall says that the Houston Rockets bus pulled up to their house around 11 pm, and in his inherent entertaining spirit, Too Tall had prepared a delicious, Memphis BBQ dinner that about 25 members of the team and coaches enjoyed.

His work has provided him the chance to meet celebrities, politicians and royals as they have come to Memphis over the years, including politicians like John McCain, Dick Gephardt and President Bill Clinton, and celebrities such as Julius Erving, Marlo and Tony Thomas, Charlie Pride and Mick Jagger. One of his most memorable celebrity moments happened when Prince William and Prince Harry were in town for a wedding in May 2014, Too Tall was bartending a private party before the rehearsal dinner, and visited with Prince William, Prince Harry, and their friends.

He laughs and says, “When they started calling me Too Tall, I

knew I had won them over, and they felt like they had made a new friend. For me, that’s what my work is all about - building relationships. That’s what’s most important about what I do.”

Too Tall grew up in Collierville, the middle sibling with two brothers and two sisters. He recalls working his first job at age 15 at the Four Flames, an upscale restaurant that was in midtown Memphis. He says it was intimidating for a teenage boy from Collierville to work there, and credits John R. Griffin, the Maitre D’, for showing him the ropes. “He was so hard on me, but whipped me into shape and taught me how to survive,” Too Tall says. “I don’t know when I developed this personality, but I love taking care of people and I have never met a stranger.” Too Tall’s first private party job was in 1982 for a CEO of a major bank in Memphis. “I had never worked a party like that before, but at the end of the night he asked me how much I charge, and I said ‘I don’t know, $40 or $50?’ and he said ‘You’re underselling yourself,’ and gave me $100. That’s when I realized how much this work is valued and even more valued when it’s done well.”

Melvin truly enjoys what he does, and now Too Tall is a brand around Memphis. It is ironic that he is the only sibling who wasn’t given a middle name. Not having a middle name has allowed him to create his own - Too Tall - a name that reflects more than just his height, but is a title of respect that he has earned.

Although Tarik now resides in Los Angeles where he plays for the Lakers basketball team, Memphis will always be considered home. For this reason, he has launched the Tarik Black Foundation, and incorporated it here in Tennessee. The Foundation was founded to benefit underserved youth in our city. Judith, who was Director of Communications for 14 years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and now Director of External Affairs at the Brooks Museum of Art, will serve as President of the Foundation. The Foundation plans to hold its first-ever basketball and life skills camp July 10th -13th for basketball players ages 11-15, at Mitchell High School in South Memphis. “Tarik really wants to provide opportunities for underserved youth in Memphis to explore beyond their circumstances for ways to positively impact the community,” Judith says. “Besides basketball, he has tapped experts to offer life skills training, such as techniques for resolving conflict, etiquette, effective communications skills, and financial literacy. Contributing and uplifting Memphians is important to Tarik...and he wants to help youth in particular to build a vision for how they can positively influence their own neighborhoods.”

The Body Parts Your Spouse Needs Most by Andy Savage Ok, now I have your attention. As much as I promote the importance of a healthy sex life in marriage, that’s not what I’m talking about here. If you could all learn to use the body parts mentioned in this article, your sex life would likely improve! So, here are body parts your spouse needs most.

1. Your Eyes. Give your spouse your full attention. Full attention is communicated with our eyes. Husbands, when your wife is speaking, look her way. Look her in the eyes. Wives, give your husband your eyes. Fight distractions and bless your spouse with full attention. The eyes are the windows to the soul. When you give your spouse your eyes, you bear your soul to them, which fosters deep intimacy.

2. Your Ears. Listening is a vital discipline in relationships. Failing to listen sends the message that your words are more important than their words. Make it your aim to truly listen. Listen for words and tone. Often it’s the tone that tells more of the story than the words. The failure to listen takes its toll on a marriage.

Eventually, your spouse will stop talking about the important stuff. Don’t let this happen. Be a good listener.

3. Your Hands. Touch is what helps bring a cold marriage out of hibernation. This article is about the non-sexual body parts, so remember that touch does not always mean sex. Husbands, lovingly touch your wife’s hair, hold her hand, massage her shoulders or feet, open the top of a stubborn jar, carry the basket of folded laundry

to its place. Use your hands. Wives, touch your husband on the chest, hold and rub his arms and place your hand on his thigh. Lovingly use your hands.

4. Your Brain. Think about your spouse.

Give diligent thought to the best interest of your spouse. Think about their day and be considerate of the challenges and joys they face. Make a call during the day to check in. Plan something you know your spouse would enjoy without them asking. Give mental energy to special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. And if you are a praying person, pray for your spouse. Good marriage connection requires thought.
