The 2017 holiday season is here, so we asked our designers their expert advice on the dining room: decorating this space and creating a superb setting for serving and entertaining your guests during this most wonderful time of the year!
Warner Moore The holidays are upon us! What to do? Here are some ideas for a unique and festive dining room.
gathering sentimental accessories from around your house and use them to build a personal story about your family. Old toys or a collection you’ve acquired over the years. It’s refreshing to re-purpose things that mean something to you. A collection of Herend or porcelain birds and animals could work. Place them on a mirror you have cut for your table. These will make a permanent display throughout the season and can be interspersed with small vases of flowers for parties. A great contemporary look of silver and white branches, balls and candles with mirrored containers of white roses or paperwhites create a world of glamour.
Thanksgiving: I love the fall season. There are so many natural things to chose from. A table with an array of small pumpkins of different colors nestled on a bed of sheet moss is lovely and will last a long time. Fall branches of turning leaves in a low container is also a beautiful look. A semi-permanent look like these can be enhanced with flowers for special evenings. Fall colors are so inviting. Don’t Warner Moore Interior Design be afraid to use lots of color on your table. Cloths, placemats and napkins of shrimp, rust, Flowers should always be low or in tall, slender vases to allow conversation orange, green or gold can brighten up your dining room. Table runners are also across the table. Using silver julep cups for flowers is also pretty and they very effective. Find some beautiful fabric and make one yourself. Try using succulents instead of/or along with flowers. Making a tablescape brings the take up very little room. Hand-made place cards during the holidays is a nice personal touch. Layer your table with cloths, placemats and chargers. This outdoors inside. creates a full and lush look. Turn your dining room into a fantasy with garland Christmas: My personal favorite holiday! Cindy McCord Dining rooms are the “heart” of a home. Many wonderful conversations and relationships are experienced over a dinner or a luncheon occasion. Never miss an opportunity for a fun or beautiful presentation. Create a special and meaningful atmosphere for your family and friends. When setting your table for any holiday, be as casual or as formal as the occasion calls for. If your event has a large number of guests and you plan to do a buffet, use a tall, dramatic arrangement. On the other hand, when having a seated dinner watch your size and scale. You want the arrangement to complement your table but not overpower it! Small arrangements in containers such as silver goblets or crystal stemware can be beautiful, yet simple. Incorporate family treasures as accents to make for a meaningful and conversational setting. Always add candlelight - high and low - to add to a soft, calm atmosphere.
Rachel Gray With the holiday season quickly approaching, I’m reminded of the lyrics to David Bowie’s song Space Oddity... “ground control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven, six), commencing countdown engines on (five, four, three), check ignition and may God’s love be with you (two, one, lift off).” Whether we like it or not, a holiday countdown or blitz actually exists, and begins after Labor Day as marketers and advertisers masterfully manipulate their medusalike puppets to rain down and sting us with endless trumpeting tentacles touting the “must haves” for the season. These advertisements are as subtle as Harvey Weinstein’s bedside manner. As an interior designer, the number one “must have” requested of me during the holiday season is finding a dining table large enough to accommodate the 34 / November 2017
If your dining room is more square, let’s say 12’ x 12’, a 60-64” round table would be appropriate and assist with traffic flow because you don’t have the sharp edges of rectangular table. Perhaps you have an existing round table that is 48” diameter. A temporary solution for the holidays is to make a tabletop extender that could increase table diameter to 60-64”. There are many expert craftsmen in the Mid South that can create a custom top that attaches to your existing table frame to increase the number of guests you can seat. Most of these tabletop extenders fold easily for storage purposes.There are online vendors that provide this service, but using a local source will maximize customization and satisfaction.

Not only does the tabletop extender increase seating capacity, it can instantly give your dining room a makeover. I recently designed an oval tabletop extender measuring 54”w x 102” to fit a 36”w x 72” farm table and the results were dramatic. The entire look of the dining room changed and the oval table seemed to occupy less space than the rectangle table. Ultimately, we all succumb in one way or another to the onslaught of holiday advertisements. After all, who can resist the lure of the fishnet adorned leg lamp with the golden shade and black fringe featured in the holiday movie classic, A Christmas Story? Decorate as you desire for the holidays as it’s your home and your rules apply. Just remember to make sure all guests have a seat at the table.

Anthony Shaw As a designer, I would consider the size of the dining room along with the size and shape of the table. One needs to decide if it’s a seated, formal dining experience, or if the table will be a serving center. This will also help determine tablescapes. A formal, seated event dictates a lower and less obtrusive decoration to encourage conversation across the table; whereas when using the table as a serving station, a larger and more elaborate arrangement makes a statement. I always use fresh flowers and if possible, incorporate family heirlooms mixed with newer acquisitions. The holidays are formal events, but for me celebrating with my family - including my grandchildren and dogs - is most important.

Apple Crisp 4 granny smith apples 4 ounces brown sugar 2 ounces apple juice cinnamon to taste
2 ounces butter 1 tablespoon of cornstarch 2 ounces water granola as needed
Peel the apples, core, slice about a Âź-inch thick or small-medium dice cubes. In a saucepan place the apples, sugar, apple juice, and cinnamon and bring to a boil for about 8-10 minutes. Add the cornstarch and 2 ounces of cold water in a different container and dilute the cornstarch. Add to the apple mixture and stir for about 2 more minutes (at this point it is going to look like apple pie mix). Remove from the fire and add the butter; stir until the butter is melted. Place the apples in soufflĂŠ cups or cast iron containers about 1.5-2 inches deep. Top with granola and place in the oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve with your favorite ice cream - preferably vanilla or cinnamon.

Buttermilk Pie 3 eggs 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 cups white sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/8 tablespoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 pie crust, your favorite recipe
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat eggs until frothy; add butter, sugar and flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice and nutmeg; pour into pie shell. Bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until center is firm.

Pumpkin Loaf
with Candied Walnuts, Spiced Mascarpone, Salted Caramel & Cranberry Preserve Pumpkin Loaf 5 ounces milk 2 whole eggs 12 ounces pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin 2 ½ tablespoons yeast 27 ½ ounces all purpose flour Buttermilk Pie from Napa Cafe
2 ounces light brown sugar 2 teaspoons each of ground clove, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg 2 ½ teaspoons salt 1 ½ cup candied walnuts (see below)
Combine all ingredients except walnuts and salt in a bowl or stand up mixer. Mix until well combined. Knead dough for approximately 5 minutes until sticky. Add salt and walnuts, work until fully incorporated. Place dough in an oiled bowl in a warm place, covered and allow to double in size. Divide dough into 14 ounce balls and place in 9 X 5 loaf pans, allow to double in size. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Candied Walnuts: Take equal parts (approximately 3 cups of each) sugar and water and combine in a saucepan on low heat. Add walnuts to this simple syrup and allow to boil for approximately 5 minutes. Remove walnuts from syrup and fry in 350 degrees oil until they are a deep, golden brown. Salt to taste. Spiced Mascarpone 8 ounces mascarpone, softened ½ cup heavy cream, whipped
¼ cup powdered sugar 1.5 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
Mix mascarpone on medium speed for 1-2 minutes. Add pumpkin pie spice and mix for 1 minute. In a separate bowl, whip cream and powdered sugar, and then fold into mascarpone. Salted Caramel 2 cups sugar ¼ cup water 2 cups heavy cream, room temperature

In a saucepan bring sugar and water to a boil and let cook until it turns amber in color. Without removing from heat add heavy cream and mix with a wire whisk until well incorporated. Bring to a boil then remove from heat and add butter. Once butter is melted stir and add salt. Let cool. Cranberry Preserve 1 cup dried cranberries 1 ½ cup sugar 1 ½ cup water

Add water to cranberries and let sit for at least 1 hour. In a pot bring brandy and Grand Marnier to a boil. Add cranberries, water, and lemon juice and let boil for 1 minute. Add sugar and let cook over medium heat for 30 minutes or until thickened.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Filling: In a large bowl combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch - mixing well. Fold peaches into the mix until well combined. Pour mixture into a 6” cast iron skillet. Dough: In a large bowl, sift flour, 3 tablespoons sugar, and salt. Cut in the shortening with a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg and cold water. Sprinkle over flour and shortening mixture, and work with hands forming dough into a ball. Chill dough for 30 minutes, then roll to 1/4 inch thickness. Place cobbler dough directly over peach filling, making sure to cover the edges of the skillet. Sprinkle the top of the dough with sugar and cinnamon mixture. Bake until cobbler crust is golden brown, about 30 minutes. Let cool slightly, and serve with vanilla ice cream.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line two sheet pans with parchment paper or silpat mats. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheets into large rectangles, about 1/16 inch thick. (If one piece of puff pastry, cut in half before rolling; if two sheets, roll each out). Cut each sheet into four even rectangles. Mix together the pecans and ginger in a medium bowl. Set aside. Spread the pumpkin butter in an even layer over 4 pastry rectangles; sprinkle the pecan mixture evenly over the pumpkin butter. Carefully place the remaining pastry on top of each pumpkin butter rectangle, pressing gently to adhere. With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut each filled rectangle into 4 long and even strips. Transfer the strips, one at a time, to the prepared sheet pans, twisting the ends to create a spiral. Continue with the remaining pastry strips, putting 8 strips on each pan. Place in the freezer for 5 minutes or in the refrigerator for 20 to chill the pastry before baking. Place the pans in the oven and reduce the heat to 400 degrees. Bake until puffed and lightly browned, about 15-20 minutes, rotating pans halfway. Cool completely on the sheet pans. For the glaze, beat together with a hand mixer the cream cheese and powdered sugar, adding enough cream to achieve the desired consistency. Place the mixture in a piping bag or zip-top plastic bag and pipe onto the cooled twists – you can also use a spoon to drizzle the mixture. Combine the sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl, and sprinkle over top of the twists.

Cream Layer (Bottom) 1 ounce lavender 2 sheets gelatin
4 cups heavy cream 1 ½ cups sugar
Bring to a boil: Lavender, heavy cream & sugar, and let simmer for 15 minutes. Strain lavender out with gelatin blooming in ice water. Remove gelatin and mix into cream mixture. Let cool to room temperature, then pour each glass about 1/3 full. Place in freezer or fridge for 1-2 hours until set. Champagne Layer (Middle) 1 jar candied hibiscus flower 1 pint fresh blackberry 1 bottle champagne
1 cup sugar 2 sheets gelatin
Bring champagne and sugar to boil. Once boiled, remove from heat and add bloomed gelatin from ice water. Take hibiscus flower and insert 1 blackberry into center. Place flower on top of cream layer in glass. Once champagne is cooled to room temperature, slowly pour over flower into glass. Place in freezer or fridge for 1-2 hours until firm. Strawberry Layer (Top) 2 pints strawberries 1 ½ cups sugar

Bring strawberries, sugar and cloves to a boil. Bloom gelatin in ice water. Strain strawberry mix then add gelatin. Let stand until room temperature, then top off glasses with mix. Place in fridge for 2 hours until set.

Apple Pie Feuilletage (crust) ½ cup water 1 cup sugar 1 ⅓ cups butter 1 teaspoon salt Combine flour, salt, and water; mix into dough and put in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Pour dough with butter 6 times. Applesauce 4 apples, cut into 8 pieces ⅜ cup sugar ⅞ cup water 1 tablespoon honey Cook apples and water on stovetop over low heat for 35 minutes; mix with sugar and heat again for 10 minutes on very low heat. Apples 6 medium apples 3 tablespoons vanilla ½ cup sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon Peel and slice apples. Cook apple slices, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon on low heat for 10 minutes to cook out water. Allow to cool in refrigerator. Building the Pie Roll out dough and place in a 10 inch pie mold. Pour applesauce in first, then lay apples out on top. Use remaining dough, cut into strips to create crisscross crust on top. Egg wash, then bake at 345 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Combine butter and corn syrup in a saucepan and set over medium heat. Once butter has melted, add sugar.

Q
uaint is the epitome of Peabody Avenue in Central Gardens, but no one would ever call the busy street quiet – except maybe the one Saturday morning a year when traffic is redirected and all to hear is the pitter patter of feet coming from St. Jude Heroes participating in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. This is the case for many blocked streets all over Memphis the day of the marathon, but as a new resident of Peabody Avenue, I truly experienced the marathon for the first time last year, and the

quiet doesn’t last long. It’s all about the kids of St. Jude on this day, and the cheers of encouragement and hope are strong and telling. Soon after the start of the race, the streets line with spectators, prepped with cheers, chants, noise markers, and signs. Being it was our first year living on a main street of the marathon’s course, my husband and I walked down the driveway to do our own cheerleading. To our surprise, we saw the street was more than just a sideline of supporters. In several neighbors’ yards there were tailgate tents, firepits, tables full of food, drinks, and huge groups of people – it was a Saturday morning, but this time all the hoopla wasn’t about football. This gathering of cheers and support was for a much bigger, more meaningful “gameday.” We joined one of the parties across the street, and I met several people with different stories and reasons for running and supporting. I discovered some runners are local, some are from neighboring cities throughout the Mid-South, and others travel hundreds, even thousands of miles away – all with full hearts to support a cause that’s dear to them for diverse reasons. I spoke to one man who was there supporting family members running in the race, and I vividly remember he said, “What’s so special about this race is the passion behind it. They’re all running for a reason, and you can see the emotion on their faces as they get close to the finish line.”
That’s when I began noticing it. Many who choose to run this race aren’t even self-proclaimed runners – they’re doing it because they’ve been touched in some way by the illness. Some run because they’re a survivor, some run for a family member or even a child of a friend, others run just because they want to impact a child’s life and help find a cure, and every one of them are appreciative of each cheer, chant, and sign made from supporters. At the end of the day, several runners thanked us for helping them get through the race, and that made me never want to miss another day cheering on the St. Jude Heroes. While some of us may not run in the race, it’s good to know there’s still a way to be part of such an impactful event. Through food, fellowship, and supporting the runners, many have found their place in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. The children of St. Jude are not alone on this day and neither are the runners.
Andrea LeTard is a personal chef, cooking instructor, culinary writer, and creator of Andrea’s Cooktales, a recipe blog and cooking video series where “there’s a story behind every recipe.” She has been featured on Cooking Channel, Today Show, Local Memphis Live, and was chosen as a Top 100 Contestant on MasterChef Season 6. She has a master’s degree in journalism. Her first cookbook, Cooktales will be released Spring, 2018.

4 slices bacon – cut into strips 1 large onion – diced 3 sticks celery – diced Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 4 cloves garlic - minced 3 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce – minced 2 tablespoons butter ½ cup flour ¼ cup apple brandy 6 cups chicken stock 2 ears corn – shucked, kernels shaved off the cob 1 whole smoked chicken – skin removed, meat shredded (find at Whole Foods) ¼ - ½ cup half and half 2 tablespoons minced parsley Heat a large Dutch oven or pot over medium heat. Fry bacon until crisp. Add the onion and celery and season with salt and pepper. Let cook until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and chipotle peppers, and cook for one more minute. Melt the butter over the top then sprinkle in the flour – stir together, creating a roux, for 3 to 4 minutes. Pour in the apple brandy, scraping up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan, and let reduce by half. Increase the heat to high, then add the chicken stock, corn, and shredded chicken. Let come to a slight boil then simmer. Stir in the half and half, parsley, and more salt and pepper. Taste for seasoning, adding more salt and pepper if needed.

And suddenly it is the eleventh month. I could swear it was April just 10 minutes ago. We have plenty to be thankful for, of course. Think about the past 10 months of inspiring art, music, and theater, and there is a very nice list here of yet more. Art is participatory. It is a flirtation, perhaps a romance, between creator and viewer (even if they never meet in person). The sharing of the soul, that is a wonder for which we truly can be thankful. The social
aspect of visual arts is a sense of community, but the one-to-one connection is truly a gift. Not every viewer connects with every painting or every artist, but that makes the solid connections even more special. Performing arts add dimension to the romance, but more on that another time. Meanwhile, enjoy this penultimate month and the great variety it offers.

Caroline politely broke up with Wells 2 weeks later via AIM after one date to his grandmother’s house. The two crossed paths again in the 9th grade after Caroline’s boyfriend at the time got in a 4 wheeler accident with him. Caroline texted Wells asking him if he was okay, and the rest is history. They soon started dating in 2008 for real this time. Then both decided to attend Ole Miss, and Caroline stated that a break up needed to happen as they entered college so that they could both focus on college. The two soon realized that they were more serious about each other than willing to admit in high school. After four years of college, Caroline and Wells knew that they were destined to live the rest of the lives together. While Wells attended UT med school in Memphis, Caroline decided to spend two years in Dallas, TX starting her young career and exploring a new city with friends. Just as planned, Caroline returned to Memphis two years later as Wells was starting his third year of medical school. On September 22, 2017, at Botanical Gardens, Wells got on a knee and asked Caroline to marry him. After the obvious “yes”, Caroline was shocked to find all of their family and friends waiting to celebrate them at the Prather’s house. The End.

HOW WE MET: Kyle and I both went to Mississippi State. I was in Delta Gamma sorority and Kyle was in SAE fraternity. My group of friends hung out with his group of friends, but we had never met. The first time we met was in December 2014 at one of his best friend’s wedding, who was marrying my friend (also distant cousin) I was in DG with. He was my escort down the aisle of the church before their wedding ceremony, but we still hadn’t introduced ourselves to one another officially. In March 2017, we were both at the same pool at a popular apartment complex in Starkville. I saw Kyle from across the pool, and asked one of my best friends, Olivia, if he was finally single….and he was. We talked at the pool, but I left shortly after with my friends to get ready to go out that night. After a glass of wine or two, I told Olivia I was going to private message him on Instagram since he didn’t ask for my number at the pool. So, I slid into his DM’s and told him to meet us at the Bin that night. He showed up, bought me a drink, and we talked and danced the entire night together.

mix&mingle TIARA’S TEARDROPS BRUNCH Tiara’s Teardrops presented a lovely afternoon at The Great Hall Conference Center in Germantown at their 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Brunch. 200 women and men attended the brunch to support this wonderful cause. Tammy Coleman, Executive Director of Tiara’s Teardrops, welcomed all and introduced the MC for the event, Bernal E. Smith, II. The afternoon’s keynote speaker was Bret Miller, a male breast cancer survivor from Kansas City, who founded the Bret Miller 1T Foundation and co-founded Male Breast Cancer Coalition with Cheri Ambrose. Bret, through the MBCC, has connected men from all over the world who are battling breast cancer, and he told his story of detection and survival of this disease. Part of a Whole
In my editor’s note two months ago, I explained our newest philanthropy section and why I think philanthropy is so important in a city like Memphis. Unsurprisingly, it’s very easy to write about philanthropy. Service is one of those few things in life that everyone can agree is beneficial, so when I’m writing about the perks of featuring service, no one will disagree. This got me thinking about the purpose of each of our other sections. Why is it so important that we feature fashion? Or various events? Or even sports? What does writing about any of these things do to truly impact Memphis. I’ve decided to explain the purpose of each in an editor’s note dedicated solely to each section of our magazine, starting with sports. My mom has always encouraged me to participate in sports. You name it, I’ve probably played it. This is not because my mom has any desire for me to be a professional athlete or even for me to play in college (my family probably realized that I don’t possess D1 level abilities from an early age), it is because my mom knows the value of being a part of a team. It was soccer that taught me to get back up when someone knocks you down. It was basketball that taught me that even the worst player on the team can contribute if they have a good attitude. It was volleyball that taught me < My name is Langston Myers and I am the editor of 4Memphis Impact. I am a junior at St. Mary’s and have been working with 4Memphis since my freshman year. I adore writing, and spend most of my time writing articles as I write for my school newspaper and another online magazine. My goal for Impact is to give young people a creative outlet and to encourage them to spend time giving back to the wonderful city we all live in. leadership is not something you are born with, it is something that can be learned. And it was swimming that taught me endurance is often more important than speed. To me, what makes sports so important is that every single person on the team has a role. Skill level aside, someone on the team is the loudest. Someone is the peppiest. Someone is the strongest. Someone is the fastest. In team sports, everyone, no matter what background they come from, brings something to the table, something that makes everyone else on the team play better. This team ideal creates so many friendships and brings so many different kinds of people together. Even to the people who just watch sports, there is a special kind of bond between people who are rooting for the same team. It doesn’t matter what political, economic, or social background you come from, if you root for the same team on game night, you’re bound to be friends. That’s why I believe sports are so important: they are so much more than a form of entertainment. Let’s consider ourselves part of Team Memphis, working together to achieve prosperity for our city. < My name is Ellie Weeks, and I am a junior at Hutchison. Writing for this magazine has inspired me to see many fundamental aspects of our city. St. George’s Independent School Students Partner with MIFA to Serve and Impact Their Community by Haley Clift
T
he Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association is a local organization that, according to its vision and mission statements, aims to “unite the community through service” and “support the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs.” This organization is very important to Memphis and the Memphis community, with specific focuses on senior citizens and families. The senior citizen programs include MIFA Meals on Wheels, Senior Companion, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and Transit that endorse health, friendship, and independence. The family programs are implemented for the purpose of strengthening families, encouraging individuality, and providing shelter for the homeless. These programs include Emergency Services, Emergency Shelter Placement, Rapid Rehousing, and a 24-hour homeless hotline. Without these programs, our city would lack the philanthropic unity that we currently have. Likewise, there are many opportunities to volunteer with MIFA, and citizens can volunteer as groups, individuals, and families. In fact, people of all ages volunteer with MIFA, including many of our Memphis Impact writers. MIFA is important and unique to our community

because it is an organization that has a far-reaching scope of impact, and its volunteer opportunities are enjoyable and fulfilling. Getting involved with MIFA is very simple, and there are many opportunities to register for various volunteer events online. Many high school students from the Memphis area schools that are involved with Memphis Impact enjoy volunteering with MIFA. Lauren Joyner, a senior at St. George’s Independent School, partnered with MIFA through one of her school’s high school programs, The Institute for Citizenship, and she, along with Kate Seabrook, who also is a senior at St. George’s participated in the Senior Companion and the Meals on Wheels programs. From their experiences of delivering food across Memphis, they learned how greatly they can impact and give back to their city. Lauren said that, “it was amazing to volunteer with MIFA’s Meals on Wheels and have such a hands-on experience in our community.” Volunteering with local nonprofits like MIFA is essential to all citizens, and significantly to the high school students; learning how to truly impact your community in your youth could engender more community involvement in your future, thus perpetrating not only a better community but a better Memphis.

Paint Memphis
Transforming Our City One Brushstroke At a Time By Emmaline Schild Paint Memphis 2017 was a one day event that brought people from all across Memphis, including students from St. Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Independent School and Houston High School, together to help beautify our city. Over 150 artists gathered to paint the entire city block on Willett Street between Central and Lamar on September 30, 2017, creating the largest collobartive mural in all of Tennessee. The mural painting opened at 9 am to artists and then to the public at noon. The artists were asked to design their walls along the theme of Memphis: A City of Colors. The festival had live music, food trucks, and more than 50 volunteers to help make PaintMemphis 2017 such a hit. These students, as well as other fellow Memphians, shared their love for art on the streets of Memphis as they created the largest collaborative mural in all of Tennessee. By the end of a long, exhausting day, the artists left behind vibrantly painted walls. Paint Memphis 2017 successfully brought artists from all over to beautify the streets of Memphis and celebrate our wonderful city and art. 84 / November 2017
High schoolers shine on national golf stage By Carolyn Lane St. George’s Senior Winston Margaritis and St. Agnes Sophomore Rachel Heck have dedicated years of their life to playing golf. From attending tournaments across the country, to missing Friday night football games, they have balanced the demanding workload of both an average high school student and state-champion golfers. But both would not have it any other way. While golf is a sport not as widely played by many young athletes in comparison to sports like basketball or soccer, Margaritis and Heck grew up with golf in their blood. Heck began playing golf when she was three, and Margaritis remembers being taken out onto the course with his father starting when he was around two or three. But even though this love of golf began early for the 2017 Commercial Appeal Girls and Boys Golf Sports Award recipients, dedication to the sport ramped up in middle school and high school, Margaritis believes. “I always tell people that ‘if you want to play a college sport or earn a college scholarship for a sport, from about 7th or 8th grade until 11th grade, it’s got to be your whole life. You’ve got to make a lot of sacrifices if you commit,’” Margaritis said. “When I started taking golf really seriously around 7th or 8th grade, I just stopped playing video games, you know. I couldn’t go to every social event or things like that. You miss birthday parties and stuff like that but that’s just all part of it.” For both Heck and Margaritis though, these sacrifices have been worth it. Missing social events “was something, at least for a few years, I was kind of upset about and struggling with, but I just kind of realized that I just love golf, and that’s what I want to do with my life. I kind of realize that I’d have to miss a lot of social events to practice, and to go to these tournaments,” Heck said. “It’s something that I’m okay with now, because I know that golf is what I want to do my whole life. But my social life definitely suffered from all the practice and missing for tournaments and everything, but it’s definitely, definitely been worth it.” For Heck these social sacrifices allowed her to greatly improve her golfing skills to
the point that she received national recognition as the 2017 All-USA Girls Athlete of the Year, which she won by a lead of 5% of the popular vote against Maryland’s Maddie Jenner. Yet Heck’s national recognition is something she tries not to think about all the time. She tries to live her life as a normal high school student and get through everything on a day-to-day basis by not letting all the attention get to her head, something admirable for the youngest player at the 2017 Women’s U.S. Open. Because of all the national attention both Heck and Margaritis have received, both golfers are committed to college on golf scholarships. Margaritis will attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, a division one school he committed to in the fall of his junior year. Heck, on the other hand, will attend Stanford University in Stanford, California though her attendance is a couple years off since she is in the middle of her sophomore year of high school. With college commitments occurring so early in their high school careers, it would be easy to look forward to those college careers and wish away high school, but both golfers work to remain members of their high school communities. This past May, Margaritis was named Head Prefect for the 2017-2018 school year at St. George’s. As Head Prefect, Margaritis works to represent the student voice to the members of the St. George’s administration, including Head of School Mr. Ross Peters, and additionally oversees the eight additional senior prefects as they complete their individual duties. After missing the first two weeks of school to attend the Solheim Cup in Iowa as part of the U.S. team, Heck worked hard to catch up not only on her studies but also with friends she could not see as often during her busy yet award-winning summer. “All of the time that I put in in the long-term was definitely worth it because now I’m at the point with like my game where my fundamentals and my foundation is so good that my practice can be used towards like mastering the game rather than fixing like basic stuff,” Margaritis said. “It only takes a couple seconds actually it after a poor shot or a mental lapse until I realize what happened and then I just correct it.” November 2017 / 85
