B R O K E N G O O D AS NEW! Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man…24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. On September 14th, 2017, the Crayola Company announced the new color to go in the Crayola box, “Bluetiful”. Bluetiful replaces the color Dandelion, which had announced its retirement earlier in the year. Crayola introduced Bluetiful with a live stream on Facebook as Bluetiful joined a number of excited children on stage to meet the world of coloring. “Bea”, as it is more informally known, joined the other 23 colors to make a standard full box. Children worldwide will pick up a crayon to create works of art that reflect who they are and the world as their young hearts see it. Bluetiful Bea may be the new color that a child picks out of the box to start their work of art, but Bea doesn’t have to be new, out of the box, for a young artist to get all the coloring she needs. One of the great things about crayons is that the broken nub of crayon performs its designed function broken just as well as new. Years ago I taught Sunday school, and the children would come in early and either play at the Lego table or the art table. The tables were built with deep containers on the side to hold the unused Legos and crayons. The children would shift through the containers to find the right piece of Lego or crayon for their creation. These crayons were always short or broken stubs because that is where the teachers put the broken crayons after the Sunday school

lesson project was completed. The children didn’t care if the crayons were broken or new; they would dig through the container to find a piece that would allow them to color their picture Genesis 2 records the creation of man, designed by God, with the purpose of enjoying God and having dominion over God’s creation. Genesis 3 records the fall of man, which made him no longer able to fully function as God had designed. The Bible is the history of man in a broken relation with God and his fellow man, but more importantly it shows us through time how the grace of God restores man to his relationship with God - allowing man to fully serve the purpose despite man’s brokenness. Memphis is a city, like all cities, that has elements of brokenness that keep it from being all that its citizens desire it to be, but despite our history of brokenness, Memphis is known for its generosity. The city, through its civil and faith-based leadership, is working hard to build a city that supports and respects the diversity of Memphis. The law enforcement community is working diligently to protect the city without the racial tension that many of America’s cities have had to endure. The not-for-profit community that 4Memphis is privileged to highlight works to bring our city together by taking care of the less fortunate of Memphis. Memphis’ brokenness, much like a crayon, has not kept our city from serving the function of its mission, to be a community that works together to provide an environment where families can be raised, young people see opportunity, and the less fortunate have a place to turn for help. You can feel the pride that Memphis citizens have in all aspects of living here. The work will never be completed, but we can take pride in the efforts being made throughout the Mid-South despite our brokenness. So pick up the nub of a crayon and help to draw something beautiful. Seek the Peace and Prosperity of Memphis. Jim Walker

As we “fall back” this time of year, shorter days lead to less sunlight and darker, earlier evenings. Lighting our homes will become more important. This month, our design experts advise on the most effective lighting plans for your home, including which kind of bulbs to use! ANTHONY SHAW
These are a few cost-effective ways that I think transitions lighting for the seasons.
Spring and Summer brings more carefree lightfilled days. Fall and Winter has a tendency to be more brooding and serious, therefore the lightning needs to kick up a few notches.
Accessory lighting - as in lamps - provides a great source of coziness and can be further enhanced with 3-way bulbs that range from low, medium, and high brightness. It’s quite alright to switch out shades seasonally also. I’ve taken a silk parchment shade from summer to a black or dark-colored shade for the same lamp into fall and winter; the colors are endless. I’ve even created custom shades for clients. And don’t forget that nothing beats the look, warmth, and
PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN JERKINS
But, as always in the design field, it is based on your client’s personality. Some people wish to have the same amount of bright, sundrenched room type of light in the winter as in the summer. Others transition to warmer, lower light. However, I suggest dimmers for all of my clients. Dimmers can take the room from a bright light down to warm and cozy with ease.
RACHEL GRAY “Everything important in lighting planning happens before the selection of the fixture,” explains Karen Lang of Hinsdale Lighting. In any home, new construction or renovations, lighting plans are just as important as architectural plans. Both lay the framework for the proper selections of fixtures and furnishings that will maximize your enjoyment of a space, particularly when the lights are on for longer hours in the winter months. Knowing and mixing different kinds of lighting and selecting the right bulb(s) are essential in creating harmonious interiors.

feel of a fire. The fireplace is also a wonderful source and is perfect for this time of year.
With most of your rooms, be deliberate when layering ambient, task, and accent lighting. Harnessing natural light is best but not always available, so other sources like chandeliers and recessed lights can create an atmosphere of gentle light, particularly used in tandem with a dimmer. Task lighting places light right where you need it, such as under-cabinet lighting in a October 2017 / 35

Warner Moore kitchen, which is essential when say mincing your garlic. Use accent lighting to draw the eye to a bookshelf or a favorite painting. Bulb choice can be the kiss of death in your interior decorating efforts when poorly selected. No one wants their home to be lit like a hospital ward - too artificial and too purple. LED lighting has grown exponentially in the last 10 years, but please use caution when selecting these energy-saving bulbs. First, bulbs with lower Kelvin ratings are warmer in color and more aligned with indoor lighting. Aim for a range of 2700 3000K in soft white. Select a bulb with a lumens rating of 800, which mimics most 60 watt incandescent bulbs. While energy savings are appealing with LED, discarding my “go to” bulb for recessed lighting, par 30 halogen bulb, seems almost impossible!
WARNER MOORE The overall goal for home lighting is that it should be easily controlled, comfortable and efficient. Lighting technology is evolving rapidly with options including compact fluorescents, halogen, incandescent, and LED to create light for many different purposes. Lighting is an important tool in one’s health and daily regimen. From morning through night the right type of lighting is important in every room in the house. If one is working with an architect on a new house plan there are so many options. The main goal is an even distribution of light. Concealing the light source is 36 / October 2017
Warner Moore Interior Design 475 North Highland, #12 A Memphis, Tennessee 38122 901.848.9832 warnermoore@bellsouth.net
important. Cove and valance lighting achieve this. Projecting light on the ceiling is a very desirable way of creating an even distribution. Recessed cans provide down lighting. They are used effectively in the corners of a room. I would suggest using them sparingly. There are also wonderful computer lighting systems that can be built into your house. They program your lighting for specific moods through the day and night. It is important to explore every option when creating from scratch. In a renovation, changes are somewhat restricted. Typically there are wall sockets and possibly one light source in the ceiling. In many cases recessed cans may be installed. If there is already recessed lighting, existing cans may be changed out for newer more versatile models. It is lovely to wash the walls with light as opposed to the standard downward beam. It is all important for every light source to be on a dimmer. Aside from creating a mood, it also increases the lifespan of the bulbs. There are three basic types of lighting: ambient, task and accent. The best plan incorporates these three layers. Ambient provides overall illumination for a room. It creates a uniform light level throughout the space. This would include recessed fixtures, sconces, or torchieres that wash the walls and ceiling with light. Lamps play an important part in even distribution.
Carefully placed, they create specific light throughout the room and provide a visually pleasant atmosphere. Task lighting is intended to illuminate a specific area as in kitchen counters, living room seating areas, a home office or a reading nook. Accent lighting draws attention to a specific object, such as art, sculpture, plants or bookcases, and often used outdoors to highlight trees or a water feature. In one’s planning it makes sense to consider ambient first and then task and accent. Light bulbs! There are so many now. As far as bulbs are concerned I prefer incandescent because of the warm color they produce. To go a bit further, I prefer 60 watt pale pink bulbs for the living and dining rooms. They cast a beautiful soft glow to a room and make everyone look more attractive. I use only 25 watt bulbs in sconces and chandeliers for low light. Overall, it is important to first think about how you use each space and what you do in specific rooms to provide the best type of light.
JIM HERBST With the approach of early sunsets and favorite holiday evenings, there is nothing more inviting than the coziness and romance of home and hearth. Achieving that warm feel with dimly-lit rooms is of course, relatively easy with the use of rheostats (dimmer switches), which are available at
home supply stores, and a must for all overhead lighting, chandeliers and track lights. Rheostats can be installed on most any lamp at a local lamp repair shops. A little pricey, but well worth the effort. Three way bulbs are a nice alternative but burn out quickly, and a bit difficult to adjust to desired brightness. Dimmer cords that access 3 to 4 lamps are also available at home supply stores. This is a budget-minded alternative to installing dimmers on individual lamps. Battery powered candles have become a safe and aesthetic alternative to the real candle flame and are readily available at home décor stores. Having set the scene for a cozy winter evening, it is time for homework; it is the morning after. Newly-designed eco-smart, LED bulbs are available for recessed (cans) ceiling lights. The bulbs have a light diffusing lens that broadcasts the light into the room rather than allow it to “bounce” off surfaces. This bulb may be used with the dim or bright diffuser switch. These bulbs are expensive and available at home supply stores and online. As in all LED bulbs, they will last for a very long time. The daylight choice seems to be a more pleasing light rather than the bright white. Most any purchase of bulbs has various selections of color brightness, the warm or soft white selection seem to be the most pleasing choice. The bright white evokes a blue, fluorescent, commercial type light, which is great for work space areas. The recently marketed vintage “Edison” bulbs are a modern touch for exposed bulbs. Clear bulbs in chandeliers dim nicely to a flame appearance, rather than a frost look. The “dixie cone” swirl bulb is taboo to most designers.

Fetch Clay, Make Man Hattiloo Theatre September 15–October 15
Muhammad Ali forms a bond with Stepin Fetchit - the first Black Hollywood actor to become a millionaire, albeit, by embodying a demeaning stereotype. Ali wants to learn Black fighter Jack Johnson’s legendary “anchor punch” that he believes Fetchit, who was friends with Johnson, knows. Inspired by their actual friendship, the play explores how each dealt with the pressure of being a black public figure trying to shape his identity in the face of outside forces.
Shakespeare in Love
Playhouse on the Square September 22–October 8 Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block…the deadline for his new play is fast approaching but he’s in desperate need of inspiration – enter Viola. This beautiful young woman is Will’s greatest admirer and will stop at nothing to appear in his next play. Set against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming, and backstage theatrics, their love quickly blossoms into his greatest masterpiece.
Sassy Mamas
Hattiloo Theatre September 29–October 22 In the autumns of their lives, three longtime girlfriends find themselves living single. Jo is recently widowed; Mary’s husband has left her for a younger woman; and Wilhelmina has been busy pursuing her career. Using their social status and wealth, they ensnare younger male suitors and assume the role as “cougars” - or, in this case, “black panthers”. But the younger men have their own plans.
Heathers: The Musical The Circuit Playhouse October 6–29
Based on the 1989 film, Heathers: the Musical is the darkly delicious story of the cliques at Westerburg High ruled by

the fearsome trio of all–Heather, Heather, and Heather–the cruelest and hottest girls in all of Ohio. When misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for her new boyfriend, the dark and mysterious J.D., they concoct a plan to put the Heathers in their place – six feet underground.
Stage Kiss
Theatre Memphis October 6–22 Contemporary Comedy. Art imitates Life. Life imitates Art. When two actors with a history are thrown together as romantic leads in a forgotten 1930s melodrama, they quickly lose touch with reality as the story onstage follows them offstage. A charming tale about what happens when lovers share a stage kiss—or when actors share a real one.
Honky Tonk Angels
Germantown Community Theatre October 13–29 This holiday sequel to the hugely popular show, The Honky Tonk Angels continues the comic escapades of three good ole country gals as they re-unite for a Christmas show like none other at “The Hillbilly Heaven Club” in Nashville. There are many surprising twists and turns in this musical comedy revue, including a gospel soul sister who also happens to be a psychic manicurist.
Buried Child
New Moon Theatre October 20–November 5 Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Buried Child takes place in an old farm house, somewhere in Illinois. We are introduced to Dodge, a cranky, sarcastic alcoholic on his deathbed, and his chatty, oblivious wife Halie, who has an unusually close relationship with the local minister. As Dodge’s health devolves, the prodigal grandson returns. Vince, comes home, after six years’ absence, with his girlfriend Shelly in tow. As old secrets from the past rise to the surface, we see newcomer Shelly try to fit the puzzle pieces together.

Autumnal Turkey Meatloaves with Honey Spiced Sweet Potatoes
MEATLOAVES 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil 2 shallots, halved and sliced thin 8 ounces 365 Frozen Leafy Greens Blend 1 crisp apple (honeycrisp, fuji, granny smith), small diced 1 teaspoon dried sage or 1 tablespoon fresh sage, minced 2 cloves garlic, minced SWEET POTATOES 2 large sweet potatoes, scrubbed and sliced into ¼ inch thick discs 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil
3-4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar salt and pepper, to taste 2 slices white bread, stale 1/3 cup milk 1 pound ground turkey 1 tablespoon stone ground or Dijon mustard arugula and crispy apple chips for garnish
In a food processor, grind the bread slices until finely chopped. Mix together with the milk in a large bowl until moistened. Add the ground turkey, mustard and cooled vegetable mixture. With your hands, thoroughly mix together the meat. Pinch off a small amount and quickly fry up in a fry pan. Once cooked, taste and adjust seasoning as necessary with salt and pepper. Form the meat into 6 equal size loaves on one of the sheet pans. Place in the oven to bake for 25-30 minutes or until a meat thermometer registers 165 degrees. In a separate bowl, mix together the olive oil and honey with cayenne. Toss the potato slices in the honey-oil and arrange in a layer on the second sheet pan. Season to taste with salt. Place in the oven and roast until cooked through and lightly browned, about 20 minutes. When ready to serve, toss the arugula with a teaspoon each apple cider vinegar and olive oil. Layer the potatoes on your serving plate and top with a meatloaf. Garnish with the arugula salad and crispy apple chips. Serve immediately.
2 tablespoons honey cayenne pepper and salt, to taste
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper. In a large saute pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the shallots and cook for 1 minute; add the frozen leafy greens and continue to cook until the greens are thawed, about 1-2 minutes more. Stir in the apple and sage, continuing to cook until the greens and apple are cooked through and lightly caramelized. Add in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30-45 seconds, and cider vinegar. Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside to cool.

ERLING JENSEN
Herb Crusted Rack of Season’s Lamb Moussaka Merguez, Heirloom Pumpkin Risotto
1 rack of lamb, frenched Dijon mustard, to coat Uncle Merritt’s herb blend, to cover 3 pound lamb Merguez 2 onions, minced 2 medium eggplant, uniformly sliced 5 zucchini, sliced 5 yellow squash, sliced 10 roma tomatoes, sliced 1 pound butter
10 ounces flour 3 quarts milk or half and half 2 sprigs rosemary 1 onion, minced 8 ounces arborio rice 4 ounces white wine water, as needed 1 heirloom pumpkin, seeded and diced with pulp reserved 3 ounces parmesan cheese, shredded
RACK: Trim away fatty meat from between rib bones. Season cleaned meat with salt and white pepper, and sear evenly on all sides for roughly 1 minute each. Remove from heat and coat the rack with a thin layer of Dijon mustard. Dredge lamb in Uncle Merritt’s herb blend and return to a 500 degree oven until desired doneness is achieved, roughly 2 minutes for medium rare. MOUSSAKA MERGUEZ: Render lamb Merguez over medium-high heat until cooked halfway through. Add onion and sweat until onions begin to caramelize, roughly 5 minutes. Season eggplant, zucchini, squash, and tomatoes with salt, white pepper, minced garlic, and herbs d’Provencal. Starting with the tomatoes, create a thin layer of each vegetable inside of a buttered roasting dish. Meanwhile, melt butter in a heavy-bottomed pot and add flour, stirring to avoid lumps. Cook for roughly 2 minutes, long enough to remove the raw 64 / October 2017
flour taste, but not long enough to darken. Add milk or half and half while whisking constantly, and cook until sauce coats the back of a spoon. Steep with rosemary for 10 minutes and season with salt and pepper. Pour rosemary bechamel over the top of the casserole, and bake, covered, in a 350 degree oven for 25 minutes, or set. Chill before cutting, the finished product will be much cleaner. RISOTTO: Sweat onion in butter until translucent, roughly 5 minutes. Add rice. Deglaze with white wine and reduce au sec. Deglaze with water or stock and cook out, stirring constantly, until rice is al dente. Finish with roasted pumpkin, pumpkin puree, butter, and parmesan cheese.

October means football weather (hopefully) and a fully laden social calendar (decidedly). Theater, art, lectures, opera, and literally dozens of fun parties and non-profit fundraisers. This may be my favorite month as the activities abound and I have not (will not, must not) begun to worry about holiday shopping yet. October is the month that we can just enjoy ourselves whether at tried and true favorites like Art on Fire and River Arts Festival, or something
utterly new like an exhibition of contemporary Saudi art or a film screening with legendary Werner Herzog. Yes, you read correctly. Those things are happening in Memphis this month. Aren’t you glad you live here? Hey, find someone you met who recently moved here and take them to one or two of the events listed. Seriously, you will never love your city more than by sharing it with a newcomer.

OUR MOST MEMORABLE WEDDING MOMENT: The most memorable wedding moment was walking down the aisle and seeing my husband-to-be waiting for me at the alter. Jonathan was crying, and I just thought to myself how blessed I was to be marrying such a wonderful person and in the presence of God and all of our friends and family. OUR MOST MEMORABLE WEDDING MOMENT: I have the pleasure of working for White Door Events where every Saturday is our wedding day! There are a million moments from my wedding that I will never forget. One of the most memorable for me was finally getting to be the Bride and experience the magic that we see week-in and week-out come together into a night better than my best dreams! HOW WE MET : Will and I met 11 years ago when we were both in the 8th grade. We had a mutual friend that had just transferred to my school, and she insisted that he and I meet after the big Briarcrest vs. ECS rival football game one Friday night. After his game winning touchdown, Will walked over to introduce himself, flashing the cutest proud smile! We talked for a while that night but nothing came of it. Things were quiet for a few years after that. The summer before my junior year of high school, I went to visit family in Knoxville. My youngest sister, as little sisters do, stole my cell phone & started to send “Hi” texts to people in my contact list. One of them happened to be Will. He responded, and I quickly apologized, but the conversation kept on. He asked me on our first date once I was home from the trip. Will knocked on my front door where my entire family was waiting to greet him – and he was instantly adored! I, on the other hand, was not yet impressed. We got in his car & played a game of flipping coins to see what direction we would take next – we ended up at a Russo’s for dinner and went bowling after. I still wasn’t sure about him, but my family convinced me to go on a second date. This one ended in roasting marshmallows over candlelight and hours of talking. I was hooked...and the rest is history! October 2017 / 71

Memphis Impact
Meet the Contributing Staff Photography by Lindsey Lissau
< My name is Langston Myers, and I am a junior at St. Mary’s Episcopal School. I am the Editor of Memphis Impact, and I am an avid writer, which is my inspiration for the creation of Memphis Impact. I write not only for this magazine but for my school newspaper and another online magazine. I swim and play tennis for St. Mary’s and am a cheerleader for MUS, but I am also involved in student government programs like Model United Nations. When I am not doing homework or any of these things, I spend just about every waking hour at youth group.
My name is Carolyn Lane, and I am a > senior at St. George’s Independent School. I am excited to be a part of Memphis Impact and hope to continue writing articles and designing pages in the future. I’ve worked on layout for all Memphis Impact Issue and am the final layout editor for the junior edition. I am Editorin-Chief of my school’s newsmagazine next year, and. I am also the editor of the literary magazine, a Bridge Builder, and a participatant in Spanish and book club. I was the Tennessee representative for the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Program.
My name is Riley Bartlett and I’m a > senior at St. Agnes. I am thrilled to be a part of the 4 Memphis Impact staff and even more excited to see it grow. This magazine is an awesome way for teens to exhibit their talents while connecting with the community. As a stylist for 4Memphis Impact I get to explore different fashion trends and use my creativity to enhance the photo shoots. Outside of the magazine, I work at a local boutique Lori James and play lacrosse for my school. For the past 3 years I have also modeled in Memphis Fashion Week; I loved seeing the 4Memphis Impact staff at the shows last year. I am so excited to see how this magazine develop and to see all the amazing things the 4Memphis Impact staff can accomplish.
< My name is Alice Crenshaw, and I am a senior at St. George’s Independent School. I work as a graphic designer and photographer for Memphis Impact. Away from the magazine, I enjoy spending as much time as I can outside, whether it is backpacking, camping, playing lacrosse, or water skiing. I spend a large amount of my time taking photos, painting, drawing and playing guitar. With my hectic schedule I find it very important to spend quality time with my friends and my family, so I am constantly working to stay involved with them. I come from a large family and being with them and hearing their stories inspires my art, so I believe that is the most important of my life to me.
My name is Grace Gage, and I am a > senior at St. Agnes Academy. I write for Memphis Impact and I am thrilled to be on the staff. I have interviewed Penny Hardaway and Matthew Mosowitz, one of ten winning essay writers for the Penny Hardaway Essay Contest, emerging fashion designer Gabrielle Smith, and the local Memphis band Summer Avenue. In my spare time I cheer for Christian Brothers High School, play lacrosse, and write. I enjoy writing poetry, creative writing, blogs, short stories and articles. I am elated to see where the Memphis Impact magazine will go, and how it will help the staff grow and learn.

At my school, I am the Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook staff, a student ambassador, and can always be seen with a bag of camera equipment. I am thrilled to be on Memphis Impact and cannot wait to work on future issues with this super talented staff.

Ballet M emphis
New location brings light to Memphis dancers By Mary Elizabeth Whitmire Ballet Memphis has found a new location. From Cordova to Midtown, the company has long been waiting for its 14-mile move. The new building is located on the corner of Madison and Cooper within Overton Square. Though the building opened August 7th, a community celebration of the opening occurred on August 26th, in which all studios and spaces were visible to the public, performances were held, and teachers answered questions about the company. Driving down Madison, pedestrians are able to notice dancers rehearsing in the studios. This interactive approach is key to Ballet Memphis’ success, as ballet is often considered a dying art. However, the company seems to be prevailing against this decline, relocating to a trendy Memphis neighborhood.

The choice in location is certainly a calculated one, as exposure to
dance is significant among Memphis’ younger population. For Youth Ballet Memphis member Lily Scott, this move means more than a new location, but an opportunity to Memphis to grow in its appreciation of dance. For example, extracurricular options for teens often seem limited to sports, the arts, or STEM related activities. So often is dance left out as an option, leaving exposure to the art at a consistent minimum. The new location of Ballet Memphis seems ideal for this reason, but is also significant in that they plan to become more interactive within our community. The new 38,000 square foot building is complete with five studios, offices, a costume shop, meeting space, and a Mama Gaia café. Classes in dance as well as pilates are open to the public, from beginners up. The space also contains a performance area able to sit 200,
giving informal shows an ideal performance space. However, most of the performances will continue to take place at Playhouse, now just a quick walk down the block from the studio. Through this change, I hope to see a growth in Memphis’ appreciation for this art, for both teens and the community at large. To a company that has called Memphis home for the past 30 years, a better choice in location could not have been picked, and they will continue to shape Memphis through their art. Coming in November, Youth Ballet Memphis will be exerting their skills in “Match Girl,” and the adult company will be preforming “Take Shape” from October 14th to the 22nd at Playhouse on the Square. With luck and a little hard work, this switch will drive Memphis forward and open many doors for both dancers and the community alike.
