Mark Ramirez Has Left The Building
Mark Ramirez, the face and heart of 4Memphis recently lost his 3½ year battle with lung cancer. Mark loved the people of Memphis, and the people of Memphis felt his love and loved him back. Mark could be found almost every weekend capturing the kinder side of Memphis life as he covered the people attending the many charity benefit parties of Memphis. His presence was one of the foundations of success for every event being held in Memphis. No benefit could be completely successful without Mark’s appearance, no matter what the cause, the venue, the food, the entertainment − those in attendance looked for Mark to snap their photo for the pages of 4Memphis. It wasn’t really about being in the magazine; it was about feeling the love of his crowd. The emails and phone calls to 4Memphis requesting coverage of an event were always formatted with “can Mark come to our event?” It was not 4Memphis they were asking to be there; it was Mark Ramirez. In the fall during the height of benefit season, Mark would often cover three benefit parties a night. Often 4Memphis' page count wouldn’t have room for all that he covered, but he gave us no choice but to make us give pages to all those he felt deserved to be covered for the work being done for those in need in Memphis.
How does 4Memphis continue without its face and heart?
Mark Ramirez cannot be replaced. Yes, we will have someone there to take photos, names of the people and the causes that Mark loved, but they will not bring the same energy into the room that Mark did. Mark in his 17 years of covering Memphis events became a fixture. Mark never joined a club or organization that was hosting the events he covered, but he was their honored guest. The request for Mark to attend an event always came with the invitation and the hope that he would stay for the whole evening.
Mark moved to Memphis in the mid-1990s as part of his 20year career with the restaurant chain, Catfish Cabin, but it was his life-long love of art through photography and painting was Mark’s driving passion. Mark was an avid painter who studied the work of Picasso. I can tell you how mad (really disappointed) that I am at Mark for not sharing his paintings with his world. Mark's family lived in Texas so Mark's friends were his "Memphis framily" as he would so often say. The friends that helped Mark in his final days were introduced to 100s of canvases of Mark’s Picasso inspired work. A Celebration of Mark’s life in Memphis will be held October 15th, Sunday afternoon, 3:00 to 6:00 at 6564 Cottingham Place. There you will be able to see Mark’s artwork and join me in my frustration that Mark didn’t share this gift with us sooner.

Mark really did consider the people of Memphis his family, he loved living in Elvis Presley’s city, telling your story through his camera. Mark’s sister Bianca finished Mark’s obituary with “Mark has left the building…TCB” Mark’s building was Memphis and its people.
His sister Bianca shared with us Mark’s final words, she was praying over him, ending her prayer saying, “In Jesus' name we pray”, she said, Mark slowly grabbed the crucifix from her and uttered from the depths of his soul, “In Jesus' name we pray, I say again, In Jesus' name we pray, I say again, In Jesus' name we pray” Mark clung to the crucifix as he returned to his peaceful sleep. Rest in Peace Mark Ramirez and thank you for sharing your life with us!!!

HE WAS OUR ROCK & HE WAS OUR STAR: A TRIBUTE TO MARK RAMIREZ
By Bianca LaVesque, Mark's sisterMarkOrozco Ramirez, born on October 9, 1954, in Wichita, KS. He was a courageous and loving soul who spread joy and laughter wherever he went. Known for his thoughtful nature, Mark was a beacon of positivity and strength, always encouraging those around him.
Mark was the 3rd of 5 children born to Emanuel and Wanda (Payne) Ramirez. Mark and his family lived in Derby, Kansas, a small suburb outside of Wichita. In the early years, the family were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where Mark was baptized, received his First Holy Communion and attended Catholic School.
In the Spring of 1964, his father’s job relocated the family to Arlington, Texas. Mark was a 1973 graduate of Sam Houston High School in Arlington, Texas. Should we be surprised to know that Mark was loved by all, quite popular, and an active member of the thespian club during High School!
During his High School summer breaks, Mark started working for Catfish Cabins and became a good friend of Charles Ezell, the owner. At the same time, Mark attended Shelton School of Hair Design and worked part-time as a hairdresser. He continued traveling throughout the South, opening and managing Catfish Cabin Restaurants with Charles Ezell for 40+ years.
Mark’s oldest son, Eric, was born in 1979. His second, Taylor, was born in 1981. He built a world that revolved around his sons.
In the mid-80s, Mark attended the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and pursued a degree in history and art. Unfortunately, he was only one semester shy of graduation before moving onto Memphis in the mid-90s where he lived for the remainder of his life. Mark loved Memphis and Memphis loved Mark! In the latter years of his life, he was a freelance photographer for 4Memphis Magazine, where he captured life's fleeting moments with a keen eye for beauty and detail. A lover of art history, Mark's work was more than just a profession; it was his passion, his canvas to paint the world as he saw it. His photographs were not merely pictures; they were stories, emotions, and memories encapsulated in time.
Mark’s world was “rocked” in the Fall of 2019 when he found out that he had lung cancer. He fought a most courageous fight for 3½ years. He was the recipient of the “Courage Thru Cancer” Gerry Finney Civic Courage Award.
Mark’s life was lived to the fullest… he traveled, he tango’d across Argentina, fell in love in Mexico and his passion for photography led him to Paris. Mark built a life that revolved around those he loved. His family, friends and his faith was his everything; his sons, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchild were the center of his universe. As an artist, Mark had a unique way of seeing the world, and he cherished the opportunity to see his family grow, change, and thrive through the lens of his camera. His love was boundless for his brother Mani, his sisters Bianca and Teresa. His parents, Emanuel and Wanda Ramirez, his sister, Yolanda Odom and his ex-spouse Gloria Jean, sadly preceded him in death.
Mark's legacy is one of love, laughter, faith, courage, and a life lived to the fullest. His love for his family, his passion for photography, and his ability to find joy in the smallest things made him an inspiration to all.
The evening before Mark died, we had an unusual experience that Mark shared with us… his eternal love for Jesus Christ. Every evening that Mark was with us, we gathered to say the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. I noticed that during our prayer that evening, Mark became restless despite the intense medication he was under.
I took a crucifix that lay at his head, in hand, stood over Mark and started a quiet spontaneous prayer. At the end of the prayer I said, “In Jesus’ name we pray!” from the depths of Mark’s soul he slowly grabbed the crucifix and uttered, “In Jesus’ name we pray!” I said again, “In Jesus’ name we pray!” clutching the crucifix, Mark said again, “In Jesus’ name we pray!” It happened a third time. SO POWERFUL … SO BEAUTIFUL … SO LOVING. Mark clung to the crucifix for a few more minutes and then let it go to return to a peaceful sleep. Not a dry eye in the room!
As I write this account, tears flow. I will NEVER forget the gift Mark gave to us that evening. I also know Mark is in Heaven… working the crowd and greeting all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith.
For us, his brother and sisters, there is only one way to say our farewell: Mark has left the building …
“I always wanted to be a photographer, like my dad. I got to live my dream.” -Mark Ramirez

The University of Memphis Tigers kicked off their 2023 football season with a fun tailgate at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital on August 18. Patients and their families, Le Bonheur staff, and Le Bonheur Club members enjoyed the fun-filled festivities which included games, food and drinks on the hospital lawn. It was the perfect way to celebrate the start of college football season. Go Tigers!

THE FAMOUS LADY LOVERS
BY COOKIE WOOLNERBlack queer women have shaped American culture since long before the era of gay liberation. Decades prior to the Stonewall Uprising, in the 1920s and 1930s, Black "lady lovers"—as women who loved women were then called—crafted a queer world. In this new book, University of Memphis history professor Cookie Woolner examines blues songs, Black newspapers, vice reports, memoirs, sexology case studies, and more to illuminate the unconventional lives Black lady lovers formed to suit their desires.

A common thread binds us together: the broken and winding roads we all travel. Most of us carry with us some form of spiritual, emotional, or physical baggage. That type of weight takes its toll. Our paths can be difficult or daunting if we try to journey them on our own. In JourneyWise, noted pastor, author, and Memphian Shane Stanford offers us a different understanding of our life's path, enabling us to reframe our journey into one that is healed and redeemed.
Novel will host a book launch for JourneyWise on Sunday, September 24 at 2PM.

After a successful run as a prix fixe sampling restaurant, Dory is making a switch to traditional menus. Rather than “chasing creativity on a wide variety of dishes,” Chef Dave Krog will be testing and rotating menus that give diners a choice on any given night. The soft opening for the new concept was eagerly enjoyed by friends and family. “Beautifully plated” and “absolutely delicious” were the two most often repeated phrases over the course of the evening. It was an incredible evening to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Make-A-Wish
Mid-South Golf Classic! Guests had a ball enjoying live music, a boozy putting contest on the green, Old Dominick cocktails, and a remarkable violin performance from Wish kid Mia. Pete Pranica of the Memphis Grizzlies emceed this year’s event, alongside auctioneer Hal Stanbury. A special thanks to the event committee, chaired by Bubba Ezzell, and top sponsor FedEx Freight. Wishes are vital for kids with critical illnesses, and this year’s event ensured wishes for more kids in our community.

In the Flow: Paddling with Matthew Burdine of Mississippi River Expeditions
By Sandi Butler Hughes Photos courtesy of Matthew BurdineUpon seeing the Mississippi River for the first time, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto called it “River of the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew Burdine, owner of Mississippi River Expeditions, is a current day Mississippi River apostle. He believes the river continues to offer new opportunities for exploring, and Memphis can be the recreation capital for America’s iconic river.
Mississippi River Expeditions (MRE) is an outfitter and guide company for canoe trips on the river. “Memphis has more river wilderness access than any other city in North America,” Matthew says. “The lower Mississippi, from St. Louis to the Gulf, is 1400 miles with big islands, sandbars, and beautiful wilderness. It is a canvas of possibilities for ecotourism.” Matthew wants people to experience the river, not just look at it. “The canoes are custom-built, multiperson sailing canoes made in British Columbia, and they are safe. They are ocean-going canoes and are very difficult to flip. So you don’t get wet unless you want to!”
Matthew grew up in the Mississippi Delta so he has long had a relationship with the river; that relationship became a love affair when he decided to solo-canoe the entire length of the Mississippi, 2400 miles. In 2015, he slipped his canoe into the headwaters of the river, and six months later he was in the Gulf of Mexico. It was a very

spiritual and pivotal journey. “I had lost my mom to breast cancer in the early 2000s. I partnered with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and I called my trip ‘A Million Strokes For A Cure.’ It was my own Huck Finn odyssey.”
Matthew also spent 10 years as a whitewater river guide in Colorado and the mountains of the West. “That is a vertically grand world in those river canyons. Here on the Mississippi, it is a horizontally grand world but just as grand,” he says. “And when you see Memphis rise up out of the horizon when you’re on the river, it gives you a new appreciation and love of the city.”
MRE is partnered with the famed Quapaw Canoe Company and John Ruskey in Clarksdale, MS. John is a legend in the paddling community with decades of expertise on the Mississippi. Matthew partnered with John when he founded MRE, and it serves as the Tennessee outpost for Quapaw Canoe Company.
As a river guide, Matthew’s top priority is safety while making sure everyone has a good time. All MRE river guides are experienced in big, moving water. The canoes are Coast Guard approved and equipped with marine radios, and he keeps a close eye on the weather before launching. Like any proper Southern gentleman, he minds his manners: he knows the protocols and etiquette when it
comes to sharing the river with barge traffic. “As for the water in the river, there is a big misconception that it is filthy - but it is NOT. Past Baton Rouge, yes, it is polluted. But in our region, it is a wilderness paradise.” He also knows a lot of river stats and fun facts and weaves interesting stories of river lore and legends that he shares along the trip. If you get lucky, he might even bring along his guitar for a campfire sing-along.
All MRE trips are private charters so you will only be on a trip and in a canoe with people you know, and no prior canoeing experience is necessary. He equips everyone with life vests and beautifully hand-crafted wooden paddles. Trips range from threehour morning and sunset cruises from Mud Island to full-day floats from Shelby Forest to multi-day canoe-camping trips. You can also design your own trip. He has guided yoga retreats, family reunions, team building trips for companies, and dinner cruises. He is planning to host supper club cruises in the fall, complete with a chef who prepares dinner on a sandbar. He has the gear and canoes to accommodate large groups of as many as 50 people. There are miles and miles of sandbars and beaches to enjoy, all within a short paddling distance of downtown, so the possibilities are as open as your imagination.
Matthew’s primary goal for MRE is to change the perspective of locals and how we view the river. “I’m trying to make the Mississippi as sexy as the Grand Canyon,” he laughs. “Memphis is the perfect place for ecotourism especially with the Big River Crossing, the Ducks Unlimited Park just across the river in Arkansas, and acres of wilderness at our doorstep.” Preach it, Matthew - preach!

Stax Museum hosted the inaugural “Wax & Wine: A Fundraiser for the Stax Museum of American Soul Music” to celebrate its 20th Anniversary this year. Billed as Soul Records + Global Wine + Southern Chefs, the event featured DJs DJ Bizzle Bluebland, Zac Ives of Goner Records, and Daniel Mathis spinning vinyl from the Stax Museum’s recent acquisition of some 35,000 soul records from the Bob Abrahamian Collection that focuses on rare recordings from the Chicago’s South Side community. Guests enjoyed 20 wines from across the world to taste, from local restaurateur Kelly English and chocolatier Phillip Ashley. staxmuseum.com

Jessica K. Haas: The Speed of Art
By Lesley Harris Colvett Photography by Giddens & Co. VisualsJessica K. Haas took performing arts to a whole new level when she made history as the fastest female speedpainter in the world. Jessica, who has been a speedpainter for over half of her life, performs all across the country advocating and inspiring everyone to use their creative gifts, and Jessica’s gift of speedart has swept worldwide. It all began when Jessica was 15 years old during her pageant days in Tennessee. While singing and dancing are the common talents in pageants, Jessica chose to showcase a different skillset: art. “I don’t know a world where art wasn’t in my world. I went through coloring books like crazy growing up,” she says. “I wanted to be true to myself and do what I was actually good at, so I figured out how to paint fast, because of the 90 second limit that is in pageants. That is not a lot of time to do art, so I figured out how to do it,” Jessica says. She was 15 years old, and she began making news for her unique talent, which became almost more interesting than the pageant itself. Her passion and skill of speedpaint grew, she received accolades, and as Jessica got faster the art evolved. She started with charcoal and it grew into painting. “Now I paint on glass, wood, clothing, and murals. It is a pretty unique skillset,” she says. “I love to play with scale, and I invented and built all my own easels. These are not traditional paintings because the easels are not typical - they are made of steel,
wood or glass,” Jessica says. “Speedpainting is very athletic. I am definitely out of breath after I perform, and when I do the 16 foot tall ones those are pretty intense. You have to be physically fit to be able to concentrate, and then deliver not just painting but a good piece of art.”
To watch Jessica speedpaint is very exciting, and you can see her hallmark performance when she won ABC’s The Gong Show on her website, www.jessicakhaas.com. “I got up there and I moved as fast as I could. I completed it and won the show, and that is when I set the record as the fastest speedpainter. It was cool when Jennifer Aniston gave me a 10,” she says.
Jessica has performed at almost every NBA and NFL halftime show, plus the NHL, and the MLB All-Star Game. A highlight for Jessica this summer was the Cannes Lions Festival. Jessica wowed guests with her speedart at a prestigious festival in Cannes, France, at the Google Beach for Google and YouTube. Jessica performed amongst the who’s who in the creativity world. “It was really cool being flown in by Google and performing on the French Riviera in Cannes,” she says.
How does Jessica decide what to speedpaint? She bases some of the decision on how much time she has, for example halftime shows are

usually in the six minute range, and she will paint one of the players, but she can also create a painting in just 42 seconds.
“One of my most unique moments was getting commissioned by NBC on Presidential election night in 2020 to paint ‘what 2020 was’ and the Presidential candidates as the votes were coming in,” Jessica recalls.
Jessica says one of her biggest accomplishments was BLOOM 2023, the very first full-length speedpainting theatrical show this past April in Silver Dollar City in Missouri at the Opera House Theater. Jessica transported the audience through her inspirational life story utilizing art, music and creative performances - while creating art in simply a few minutes. The show ran a whole month and took a lot of athleticism to perform. “I was getting messy with paint all in my hair… but seeing the reaction of the audience and receiving standing ovations, and seeing girls who were speechless that this can be done with art, and seeing that they got inspired was so impactful,” Jessica says. “This was a life-made moment for me, getting to see their reactions, and I think there will be a whole new line of speedpainters as a result of the shows.” There were dancers, a 10 foot tall coloring book, and painted Prince, Elvis and the Statue of Liberty that rose 16 feet tall, and a 24 foot wide glass easel that Jessica painted on in three minutes. The whole show was 45 minutes long with seven different paintings. “I was covered head to toe in paint,” Jessica says with a laugh.
In addition to making art, Jessica is also a model and has appeared in commercials for Sherwin Williams on the TBS Network.

Jessica is focusing on legacy and creating an entire field for upcoming speedpainters. “I know that there are going to be more girl speedpainters following me, and I want to leave them equipped and create an entire field of entertainment for speedpainters to arrive,” Jessica says.
Jessica’s art may be speedy, but her paintings are forever. Her speedart can be enjoyed all over the world - from homeowners who have commissioned pieces to paintings for corporate America,
nonprofits, and celebrities. Opening this spring after a long closure for renovation, the Cossitt Branch Library on Front Street boasts more than books to serve the public. A reception and tour for members of Friends of the Library showed off the space as well as the capabilities of the in-house café. The library has long served downtown and now sits poised to be the next door neighbor of the Brooks Museum.
The reopening of the Cossitt Branch Library is a crowning jewel for the progress of the Memphis Public Libraries systems. In 1888, Frederick H. Cossitt, a wealthy businessman, wanted to thank the city for its hospitality by donating a library for the citizens. The beautiful building was dedicated in 1893 as Memphis’ first public library.

Just as they often do today, Memphians helped bring the project to completion. While the money was donated by Mr. Cossitt for the building, there were no funds for books. The public was asked for donations to buy the books, and a year after the building was completed the shelves were full of books and the library opened in earnest.
The Cossitt was the first Southern library to be desegregated, and our city’s library system continues to make history. What is happening at Memphis libraries is attracting national attention because of the innovative services and programs. The libraries are more than just books and relics of the past - they are community centers with access to state-of-theart equipment for music recording, filmmaking, or even 3D printing. In August, a new program “Library of Things” launched and lends non-traditional library items such as camping equipment, yard games, karaoke, outdoor movie night, and nature exploration. The Library of Things is available at the Bartlett and Benjamin Hooks branches. The freshly renovated Cossitt continues to build on the success of the Memphis Public Libraries system. The Cossitt offers equipment for photography, music, and podcasts, co-working spaces and areas for performing arts. Dos Hermanos Kitchen is the new cafe inside the Cossitt. The cafe is open Mon-Thur 10am-8pm, and Fri-Sat 10am-6pm.

When you visit the Cossitt, be sure to notice the cornerstone from the original library building - it is a piece of the past that continues to be a vital part of Memphis and our future.

Cool Weather Vegetables:
How to Prolong Your Backyard Harvest Into the Winter
By Owen Smith, Horticulturist - Urban Home Garden & OrchardSummer
is over, but it isn’t too late to start growing food in your backyard! If you are interested in growing food but haven’t had a chance to start a garden, fall is a great time to do it. The pace is much slower than the sprawling tomato and squash plants of summer. Cool season vegetables taste sweeter as the temperatures drop, causing higher sugar content in the leaves and roots. Personally, I spend all year looking forward to those beets and carrots pulled from the ground in January, as they taste better than those grown at any other point in the year. Now that the heat has begun to subside, it’s much easier to spend time in the garden. Weeds grow much slower, and the insects which tend to cause problems are less active. At this time of year, radishes, carrots, onions, beets, peas, broccoli, cabbage, and all kinds of salad greens can be started from seed, sown directly in the space where you want to harvest them from. These crops will grow until winter sets in, and they can all survive freezing temperatures with some extra attention. If you don’t have garden space in your backyard, they can easily be grown in pots and other containers.
3 Easy Vegetables to Grow:
1. Salad Greens
Greens are very easy to grow, and the taste of home-grown salad in cool weather is hard to beat! Lettuce, bok choy, spinach, arugula, kale, collards, and chard are all grown and harvested similarly, so you can grow them all together if your space is limited. Most of these plants will be ready to begin harvesting in 60 days. To have greens all winter, harvest only the outer leaves of each plant. Start a few rows of seeds weekly until early October.
2. Carrots
Although they can be tricky to grow at times, carrots are well worth the effort in your vegetable garden. Be sure that your soil is very loose and weed-free. Sprinkle seeds in a shallow furrow just ¼ inch deep and cover lightly with fine-textured soil. I like to plant a radish seed every 6-12 inches, since the carrots take so long to germinate. The radishes will pop up quickly to mark the rows, and I harvest them while thinning the carrots a few weeks later. To thin your carrot seedlings, cut the seedlings with scissors so that there is one plant every 1-2

inches. Plant more rows every week or two until early October.
3. Bunching Onions
This perennial onion has two purposes- you can cook with the bulb, or use the top as green onions. Anytime you harvest the bulbs, be sure to leave half of them in the ground, as they will continue to grow and produce more bulbs. Once you get this plant established in your garden it will continue to grow and multiply in between your harvests, and will come back year after year. The “Evergreen Hardy Bunching Onion” is one of the most common varieties and is easy to find.
Sowing Seeds
Starting plants from seeds can be daunting at first, as it is hard to imagine how a tiny seed can transform into a head of lettuce or a sprawling pea vine. To prepare a bed or container for seeds, be sure to loosen the top 3-5 inches of soil and remove larger clods of soil or debris from the surface. If you have heavy clay soil, you can till in fine-textured compost to create a better seed bed, or put down cardboard and 6 inches of finished (not hot) compost on top. The seed packet will have information on spacing and depth, so be sure to follow those instructions closely. Make sure you aren’t planting the seeds in an area with excessive moisture.
Keep Harvesting When it Gets Cold!
If you would like to prolong the life of your plants, you will need to provide some protection on cold nights. All of the plants listed above can survive temperatures of 35º, so you will need to use frost cloth on cold nights. Set up bamboo hoops over the vegetables every 5-6’, and lay the frost cloth on top of the hoops. Secure the edges of the cloth with bricks or stones. Most days, you will have to uncover the plants in the morning to ensure they don’t get too hot.
With cooler temperatures, more rain, faster crop maturity, and less pest pressure, fall is a great time to start a garden if you’ve never done it before. Of all the vegetables you can grow, the crops listed above are among the easiest to try. The best way to begin gardening is to start small and keep it simple. Grow what you love to eat!
September/October
Art events
The roar of the crowds – one for football and another for performing arts – both kickoff during September. That is not to say there isn’t some venn diagram crossover between sports and arts fans, rather that the great Fall seasons – along with school activities – begin in earnest in September. Summer vacation was fun but we all missed seeing our friends at openings and performances. September and October are just jammed packed with things to do. There is a date in the list below when no fewer than four plays open on the same night (happily all have multi-week runs so you can see each). Opera Memphis with 30 Days of Opera pops up at sites all across the city while Tennessee Shakespeare takes a bit of the Bard to several sites across West Tennessee. From blockbuster exhibits at the Dixon to small, cutting edge arts shows at TOPS Gallery, we have variety. Festivals? Yep, we have those too. Fall is just fun. Get out there and enjoy! -Ken Hall

Fashion 4Ward
By T. RendyBon Jour from Paris! As I sip a French 75 and glance at the ChampsElysees connecting to the Place de la Concorde, my mind contemplates the arrival of Fall. I heard a “click” and realized I am not in Paris. It was just a dream – it’s 101 degrees and I am in Memphis. The sound I heard was the click of the air conditioner struggling to keep up. It is hot. And so are this year’s Fall fashions.
Designers are redefining looks from yesterday. Collections are all about shapes and personal style. Vogue France Special Issue-Fall 2023 states that it is “all in the details.” Minimalism is the word in the fashion house. Plaids, checks, dots, sharp edges, oversized men’s looks, and shoulder pads all are making an appearance. Also according to Vogue, “the message from the runways is clear; a single elevating accessory – or a singular piece can make a look sing.”
Black and white is also making a comeback. Chanel is bringing back the big, white dots on black for a wow effect. Gucci and Balenciaga are showing lots of lace with interesting patterns and intricate work. Also shown is neon lime color with lace.
Menswear never looks old, and this year it's all about size and volume. According to many publications, neckties add “graphic appeal” to any outfit.
Bows are everywhere! They are big, oversized and have trailing folds. Saint Laurent showed giant bows tied at the neck and waist for a grand entrance – “Bourgeoisie”.
Fall 2023 also takes us back to the '50s. Glamorous full skirts and dresses with nipped waists give a modern edge to a nostalgic 1950s flare.
One look puzzling the shopper is the matching of tops and bottoms. The outfit is back! Years ago, the “outfit” was considered boring, matronly, and lacked style individualism. Fall’s 2023 outfit consists of gorgeous prints with a modern ease. Designed patterns consist of florals, birds, and horses. Tonal looks are also a must with head-to-toe one color. The monochromatic prints and matching tops and bottoms create a slimming silhouette, making you look tall and sophisticated.
Denim never leaves the runway; it is still a constant. Wear double denim by selecting the same wash for all your pieces.
This year’s Fall designs are all about streamlining your look and then popping it with a great accessory. A WOW accessory is the key to looking great. Look to Paris for inspiration. Even though the temperatures are still warm, the hottest styles and best selections are arriving now in the stores. Take note and go shopping!
Sincerely, T. Rendy

Even with the skills and drive to create, many makers in our city found themselves without the resources needed to flourish as artists. Arrow addressed these needs by providing studios, specialized equipment, and a marketplace for residents to shop from over 80 local creatives. Two creatives, currently working and selling at Arrow Creative are Douglas Repetto and Antonio Jones. Arrow, a one-roof creative district in the heart of Midtown, has proven art has the ability to build community. Join our community, meet our artists in the marketplace or sign up for a class to learn a new creative skill.

Rough Feathers was created by Antonio Jones, a proud native of Southside Memphis who rose above challenges to create his brand “Creating was always something that made me feel free I had a thing for putting colors and concepts together I decided to pursue entrepreneurship and start my brand.” Jones says. For Jones, his work is not merely about fashion or even just an outlet for himself, but a tool to empower others. Jones explains, “The message behind my clothing brand is that, no matter race, creed or color everyone goes through hardships. You just have to use your own wings to fly over them.“ Jones infuses intention into each piece he makes, doing research and creating mood boards to craft his ultimate vision. When you buy a piece from Rough Feathers, you aren’t just buying clothing, you are bringing home a symbol of strength and resilience that can inspire both the person wearing it and those who see it.
