Girls on the Run Memphis Launch Event
Girls on the Run, a nonprofit organization for girls in 3rd - 8th grade, launched here in Memphis this summer, and more than 100 guests attended the kick-off at Crosstown to learn about GOTR. The national program is in 200 cities, and its mission is to inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games.

Children's Museum Membership Mixer The Children’s Museum of Memphis hosted an after-hours event exclusively for members only. The 27th annual Pidgeon Estates Community parade was held on the morning of July 4th at 10 am. South Main Association hosted a National Night Out gathering at The South Main Market. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Mempho Music Festival: Diego Winegardner ShowcaseS His Hometown

M
emphis music and Shelby Farms Park are two incredibly unique assets for the Bluff City. When you pair the two, you have the foundation for an outstanding opportunity - and so began the Mempho Music Festival. Diego Winegardner, founder of Mempho, grew up in Memphis, and traces his love of music and the inspiration for Mempho back to his Memphis roots.
“Growing up in Memphis and being immersed in the music culture here, growing up seeing B.B. King on Beale Street, left an indelible mark on me and also my view of the world. In particular, it taught me a lot about music and Memphis’ place in American music history,” Diego said. It had been several years since he had returned to his hometown, until a couple of years ago. He reconnected with high school friends who took him for a bike ride on the Greenline. That bike ride resulted in a “lightning bolt moment” when he looked out over Shelby Farms Park. “I
tremendous job in building what I think will be a perpetual asset for the city of Memphis and big draw for people all over the country. It’s a real model for how an urban park in America can have a dramatic impact on this community. I find Shelby Farms to be utterly the nicest urban park in America, and a tremendous asset for the city.” As a music fan, Diego has attended 1000s of live concerts, including all of the major festivals in the United States and internationally. He got to know some of the large promoters through his work in finance in New York, and he began learning how the music festival business model works. Mempho is his first foray into the business he had previously enjoyed as a hobby. In year two, the festival is growing and evolving, and this year’s offerings build on the success of the inaugural event. A blend of nature, music, food, and art, Mempho promises something for everyone. For the first time ever, Shelby Farms is allowing large-scale camping with 400 sites available. Festival goers will be allowed to exit and re-enter so they have the chance the enjoy the regular Shelby Farms’ amenities

such as horseback riding, kayaking and ziplining, plus exclusive Mempho experiences on the festival grounds. Visual art installations will be placed throughout the festival grounds, an interactive dome with DJs, after-party, supergroup performances, and other surprises. The lineup features a mix of contemporary artists and Memphis music greats. Royal Studios will be honored for 2018, and with that comes a tribute with performances from William Bell, Bobby Rush, Project Pat, Frayser Boy and the Hi Rhythm Section. Mempho is also presenting a very rare performance by Chuck Leavell and Stones Throw. Chuck is the keyboard player and musical director for the Rolling Stones, and has assembled the entire Stones backup band and singers to perform in this extraordinary set at Mempho. The second stage this year is sponsored by Hard Rock International and will be almost as large as the main stage last year. VIP ticket holders will be treated to exclusive performances by the festival artists in addition to special VIP amenities. Attention to detail for all festival goers, whether general admission or VIP, is important to the overall festival experience, and those details include free water, clean restrooms, plenty
of food and drink vendors, and shady areas. “A lot of things have to line up to get it right, but when I think about the most successful music festivals around the country, it starts first and foremost with location. Check that box with Shelby Farms Park,” he said. Keeping the park in pristine condition is also important, including waste management and recycling, and they are proud to announce that the festival is straw-free certified. “We want to make sure we leave the park just as we received it. ‘Leave no footprints behind,’ is an important component to us” Diego said. Last year over 80% of the waste was diverted, with the goal being 100% as the festival continues. While the inspiration began with a premiere location, Diego also envisions a “higher calling” associated with Mempho and for it to be more than simply music on a stage. “For me, being a passionate defender of Memphis wherever I am, I felt there was a unique opportunity to retell the Memphis music history story. I felt there was a real opportunity to bring some of that energy and spirit back to the city, to highlight the rich, incredible history across so many genres with Memphis as the birthplace of blues, soul, and rock-and-roll.” He sees Mempho as a catalyst for young people and others interested in the music industry to move here or to stay here rather than heading to Nashville or Austin. “Memphis is a super-affordable city, and if you’re starting out in your career, cost of living is always a factor of where you move; but also opportunity for people who are interested in the music industry.” Another part of the Mempho higher calling is the non-profit Mempho Matters, and last year a pilot program, “Learn to Rock” was launched. The goal of the program is to build bridges into the Memphis community, in particular music students and teachers in the Shelby County School system. It is an opportunity for kids and teachers to receive tickets to Mempho, and almost 2,000 were given away last year. Eventually, the non-profit will replenish music instruments in local schools and to create afterschool music programs. “If we could launch the career of the next Aretha Franklin or Al Green, that would be something,” Diego hopes. Mempho Music Festival is a weekend of great music in a beautiful setting, courtesy of Diego Winegardner and his heart for his hometown. The kids are back in school, and that means study habits and organization are on our minds. Growing up, I always had a desk in my bedroom that was dedicated to homework and studying. (This same theory may be applied to adult desks at home - work-from-home jobs and even paying bills.) Carol Smith, Loyalty Manager– IKEA Memphis, offers her expert advice on creating this important space. “We all want each school year to be the best that it can be for our children, and the beginning of the new school year offers the opportunity for a fresh start,” Carol says. “With a little organization, you can make this the best school year ever.” “Having a designated study space goes a long way in creating good study habits. Creating a space that’s just for schoolwork helps the student get into ‘study mode’, and makes the transition from relaxation to work that much easier. Make the space appealing and positive…and appropriate to the size of the student! Desks and chairs for study should be to scale, and take into account the age of the user,” Carol states. As for scale, the person using the chair should be able to sit comfortably with both feet flat on the floor. For smaller children, a chair such as Molte ($14.99) has five different height adjustments and a fixed, non-rolling base. For older children, the rolling Snille desk chair ($19.99) is scaled for children, and easy to clean. When it comes to desks, Carol says the dream is the clean, clutter free desk! “A good habit to start is to ‘clear and reset’ the desk when work is done…store away all papers, books, pens and pencils, and clear the desk for a fresh start the next day. IKEA offers the Micke series (starting at $49.99), which features drawers and covered storage to hide all of the clutter, and Summera drawer organizers keep the pens, pencils, and paper clips tidy. Pair the Micke desk with the Micke add-on unit, and the built-in white board/magnet board allows the student to keep a running list of all of the projects due.” For the smallest students, the Påhl desk is the perfect choice. Påhl desk is height-adjustable, and can “grow” as the student does! The colors are fun, and the size is just right. For older students, the Linnmon table top series is a compact and simple solution, and is easily customized with Adils leg series. Both table tops and legs come in different colors, so it’s easy to mix-and-match for color choices that’ll work with any décor. Carol advises that for older students, or anyone sitting longer to study or work, there are other considerations when it comes to choosing a chair. Lumbar support and armrests help keep and maintain good posture…particularly when one is seated for longer periods of time. For an older student, a chair like Renberget ($49.99) is a good choice that offers the ergonomic features needed. Accessories play a big role as well. Magazine files can keep all of those papers and precious drawings neat and tidy, and the Tjena storage box series makes it easy to hide clutter. Add a recycling bin for paper and you’ve got a complete work area, ready to use! Carol points out that “It’s never too early to start good study habits…whether you’re sending your little one off to kindergarten or off to college!"

The beauty of origami will be boldly displayed at the Memphis Botanic Garden as a part of the Origami in the Garden travelling exhibit. Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures, and this exhibit, Origami at the Garden2, is presented by International Paper, Speer Charitable Trust, Goldsmith Family Foundation, and Belz Family Foundation. Seventeen outdoor sculptures and 3 indoor unfolded-cast wall hangings will be displayed throughout the 31 specialty gardens. This collection was created by American artists Kevin and Jennifer Box. The exhibition features Box’s own compositions as well as collaborations with world-renowned origami artists Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse and Robert Lang. Beginning September 21, 2018 until March 24, 2019, metal works will be showcased throughout the Botanic Garden, sparking creativity and unfolding imagination. According to the Memphis Botanic Garden, all pieces will be placed throughout the garden’s 96 acres and will provide ample opportunities for guests to ponder origami’s simple messages and learn its history through interpretive signage, hands-on demonstrations and lectures Children will be able to delight in the wonder of origami and have the opportunity to view this art and participate in an ageappropriate curriculum on Asian culture & arts as well as tie-ins to their schools STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) studies.

Remove from the heat. Add the olives and toss to coat. Add the basil; toss to coat and serve. Arrange the deli meats, olives, and peppers on a large platter. If you prefer, substitute other meats such as spicy capocollo or bresaola. Also can be served with assorted cheeses such as parmigiano-reggiano, provolone or cheddar and sliced focaccia bread.

Kooky Canuck Venison Poppers
1 pound ground venison 5 jalapeno peppers Maple syrup 10 bacon slices Brown venison meat; half jalapeno peppers lengthwise and remove seeds. Stuff peppers with venison and wrap with bacon. Bake for 15 minutes or until bacon is crispy. When removed from oven, drizzle with maple syrup.

Southern Style Pimento Cheese 2 cups sharp cheddar, shredded 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 jalapeno, seeded and diced 4 ounces roasted red bell pepper, chopped (about a quarter cup) 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon salt Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Pickled mustard seeds: 350g champagne vinegar 150g water 100g sugar 11g salt 200g yellow mustard seeds Mix vinegar, water, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Bring to a boil and add in seeds. Remove from heat and preserve seeds. Let set overnight. Place prosciutto, lavash (soft, thin unleavened flatbread), and pickled mustard seeds on a platter to serve. Be creative in your presentation for extra impact!

Wash the alligator meat, shrimp and crawfish tails in the egg wash, then follow with the corn flour and blackening seasoning mix, then fry. Cajun Creole Sauce: 1 cup sweet Thai chili sauce ½ cup garlic sauce ¼ cup mayonnaise Combine the chili and garlic sauce with mayonnaise. Toss the protein in the sauce and serve on a bed of lettuce.

Loaded Potato Dip with Pigskin Smashers 3 pounds baby or fingerling potatoes 1 teaspoon salt, plus more for cooking the potatoes ¾ teaspoon garlic powder Olive oil, as needed 6 slices bacon, cut into lardons 4 green onions, thinly sliced on the bias, greens and white parts divided 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 16 ounces sour cream 8 ounces block sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Cracked black pepper, to taste Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and season with salt; reduce heat to a simmer and cook until fork tender but not mushy, about 15-20 minutes depending on the size of the potatoes. Mix together the salt and garlic powder in a small bowl and set aside. While the potatoes cook, make the dip: in a large fry pan over medium-low heat, cook the bacon until crisp, reserving 1 spoonful for garnish. Remove with a slotted spoon and dry on paper towels; pour off all bacon fat into a bowl. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat back to the pan. Add the white parts of the green onion and cook until softened and lightly caramelized; add to the cooked bacon to cool slightly. In a medium bowl, whip the cream cheese until fluffy with a hand mixer, scraping down the bowl as necessary. Add in the sour cream and whip until smooth. Fold in the shredded cheddar and green onions (reserving some for garnish), and the cooked bacon and onions, seasoning to taste with cracked black pepper. Garnish with reserved cheddar, bacon and onions; refrigerate until ready to serve. To finish the potatoes, remove the potatoes from the water and carefully dry with a kitchen towel. Using a glass or dry measuring cup, gently press down on each potato, flattening out to a disc, ¼ inch thick. To the skillet where you cooked the bacon, add 1-2 teaspoon of bacon fat along with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and heat over medium high heat. Place the potato rounds in the skillet, taking care to not overcrowd the pan, and cook until browned and crispy on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Remove and place on paper towels to drain, immediately seasoning with the garlic/salt mixture and cracked black pepper. Continue with remaining potatoes – it’s okay if you run out of bacon fat, just use olive oil as needed. Serve potatoes warm, room temp or cold with the prepared dip. For a crunchy twist, mix in some ruffled potato chips with the smashed potatoes!
