MEMPHIS FASHION WEEK
COLLABORATION
by AUGUSTA CAMPBELL
This time of year in Memphis heralds the upcoming Memphis Fashion Week (April 10-13), the main fundraising effort for Memphis Fashion Design Network. Local retailers and designers come together beautifully to support the dreams and realities of fashion lovers in this region. Memphis Fashion Week would not be possible without its many supporters; and this year, Looney Ricks Kiss came in strong. The architectural firm recognizes the art of good design in any form, including fashion. We shot these looks in
LRK designed buildings-Old Dominick Distillery and The Gray Canary. Also for this month’s editorial, we hired a MFW veteran model, along with a hair stylist and a make-up artist from MFW supported businesses, and we brought in guest wardrobe stylists from MFW as well. The stores featured in the next few pages show readers what to wear for Memphis Fashion Week in head-to-toe looks that make one-stop shopping another dream come true.

Great Caesar’s ghost, March is upon us, Ides and all! No tragedy here though as we leave soggy February behind and forge ahead in a month filled with art openings, lectures, plays, and music. The return of the Young Art Patrons art fair with a companion show at the Jack Robinson Gallery – as well as a re-energized Ross Gallery at CBU (thanks to Cat Pena) and a very important show and panel
for Dear Artist at the University of Memphis usher in a thoughtful and intentional new era. Laurie Brown, new owner of L Ross Gallery, similarly is bringing a new vision. The latest incarnation of the Beale Street Artcrawl offers a variety of works and artists, most of whom have not been heretofore seen. This is an exciting time indeed. Go, see, and enjoy. - Ken Hall

your LOCAL GROCER KNOW
Superlo Foods & High Point Grocery
By Sandi Butler Hughes and Lesley Harris Colvett The Memphis grocery scene has certainly evolved over the years, but a couple of staple stores remain a popular destination for shoppers - Stepherson’s Superlo and High Point Grocery.
Superlo Foods
Photos courtesy of Superlo Appeal “Memphis Most” Poll for Best Fried Chicken, and number two in Best Meat Market, and Best Grocery Store. This grocery store has a rich history that dates back to 1944. Randy Stepherson, President of Superlo Foods, says that his father and two uncles (after they were discharged from World War II) went into business together. One of Randy’s uncle’s bought a grocery store on Rembert Street between Central Avenue and Peabody. Once Randy’s father and other uncle were discharged from the war, they came back and went into business together. They had two stores - one on Poplar Avenue and another on Macon Road - and in 1978 the two brothers (Randy’s uncles) retired and Randy and his business partner, Bob Reed bought them out. Bob and Randy’s brother Jack were in partnership with Randy’s father until the end of 1998. For years, they were Stepherson’s Big Star. Big Stars were independent grocers made up namely of Stepherson’s, Baker’s, and Robilio’s until the 1990s. Stepherson’s Big Star was the current day Superlo at Spottswood in East Memphis, and Stepherson’s is still operating at Macon Road and Graham, which is their oldest store.
Walking into Superlo Foods is a real treat. Fresh-cut, quality meats at the meat department, a superb bakery, and a deli that features award-winning fried chicken matched with everyday low prices and friendly employees are just some of Superlo’s secrets to success. In 2018, The Commercial Appeal named Superlo as one of the “Top Work Places”, and Superlo’s fried chicken was awarded second place in The Commercial 52

“We spent two years as Stepherson’s East, and during that time we came up with the plan to go everyday low price and quit running ads. In the fall of 1993, we became Superlo Foods,” Randy says. “In late 1999, Mega Markets went into bankruptcy...and in April 2000 we opened Superlo Foods on Covington Pike in the old Mega Market building. Within two years we had done well enough with it, and we bought a store in Frayser, which was a Piggly Wiggly that wasn’t doing well, but is doing very well fo us.” In fall 2009, Superlo opened at Winchester and Kirby (which was originally a Kroger.) In 2011, they opened a Superlo in Southaven, MS, on Goodman Road, and in 2014 they bought Cooper’s Neighborhood Market on Quince near Perkins. In late 2017, they bought the Cash Savers in Parkway Village, fully remodelled the store, and it is now a Superlo. The modern-day Superlo boasts a fabulous selection of wine. “We made a decision to turn into a destination wine store. We are one of the top wine destinations in the city,” Randy says. The Spottswood store recently converted to all LED lighting, providing a nice, clean look for the store.
Superlo is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program) store company. Thirty percent of the company is owned by the ESOP, which is owned by the employees who have been there and over a period of time contributed to the program. “Our employees literally do have ownership, and the value of the ownership can be enhanced by the performance of the company, and when they retire that is theirs,” Randy says. “We are known for our pricing, and when I say everyday low, we don’t rest our hat on ads with games or gimmicks - we price everyday low,” Randy says. “We are Superlo, and we operate as low as we can.” With 8 total stores nowadays, Bob and Randy’s children are part of running the business as 3rd generation - Randy’s son J.R. Stepherson and Bob’s daughter Ashley Harris. Randy’s sister Beth Berry is the office manager, and his other sister Susan Cox is Deli supervisor. Randy’s brother Jack is also one of the working owners currently, and their dad Kenneth Stepherson retired at the end of 1998. Superlo will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary this fall, and while it has surely grown over the years the basics remain the same: everyday low prices, quality foods, and friendly service! - LHC
High Point Grocery High Point Grocery is tucked in the heart of the High Point Terrace neighborhood, and has been the heartbeat of this vibrant community since the 1950s. Today, High Point Grocery (HPG) is owned and operated by second- and third generation grocers, Charles Shirley, Jr., and Michael Shirley. The store was bought in 1971 by Charles Shirley, Sr. Charles, Jr., worked part-time until he graduated from Memphis State and also taught school for a year before joining his father full-time as a partner in the grocery business in 1973. Michael started working in the store as a little boy, and he grew up working alongside his grandfather and father. He attended college in Chicago, worked in video production in Los Angeles and for two years maintained the official website for Britney Spears. Last June, he returned to the Bluff City to carry on the family business of High Point Grocery. The charming store has a welcoming feel that starts when shoppers open the door and are greeted (often by name), and continues throughout the shopping experience. “We don’t want it to feel like Kroger,” Michael said. While the grocery is smaller than a mega-store and has a vintage vibe, it definitely does not lack in selection or quality of products. Throughout the store, locally-made products are offered alongside national brands. Being a locallyowned grocery, it is important to the Shirleys that they support local vendors. From Las Delicias chips and Beneva Mayweather yeast rolls to J. Brooks coffee and Wiseacre beers and everything in-between, they offer one of the best selections of local products available in the city. Another popular offering at HPG is the fresh assortment of meat and seafood. The meat cases are stocked with certified choice angus beef, and the tenderloins are highly sought after, especially during

the holiday season. One of the best burgers in town is the Alex’s Tavern Greek Burger, due in part to the freshly ground chuck, ground daily for Alex’s owner Rocky Kasaftes. The sausage is also freshly ground daily, and they stock a selection of fresh seafood. Butcher Gary Richardson has decades of experience, and he brings that expertise to the HPG customers with select cuts of beef, pork, and more. The produce selection is fresh, varied, and meticulously maintained by Produce Manager Mark McGrath. “He came with the store,” laughs Charles describing the long-term employee. Several employees at HPG have been with the store for many years, and is just another reason it has such a family atmosphere. Need a greeting card? They have got them. What about shampoo or aspirin? Got that too. All at competitive pricing, especially when you factor the convenience and service of shopping at High Point. Weekly specials are offered, and shoppers receive a weekly email detailing the in-store specials and new products. Charles notes that while the quality meat selection is a big reason so many shoppers frequent the store, there are also several other reasons too. “We have a good variety, and it’s easy to find what you need. If a customer needs help, our employees are available. Plus, we offer a large selection of local products, and if a customer has a special request for something, we do our best to stock it in the store,” he said. Quality products, personal service and a friendly atmosphere are the hallmarks of this family-owned store, a neighborhood staple that offers groceries and so much more. This is particularly evident when your High Point Grocery run concludes with your bags being taken to your car. A perfect conclusion for a store built on tradition. - SBH

Collierville High School Dance Team Wins National Championship
On February 1st, 2019 the Collierville dance team earned both white jackets and a well-deserved national championship title in the large varsity hip hop division. After two years of finishing runner-up at finals in both hip-hop and pom categories, Dragons finally came out on top, taking home gold medals for first time ever. “Seeing the team grow throughout the year and excel in all skills with determination made this happen,” says Coach and Choreographer, Carol Lloyd “The will to be their best and make the best of each practice in preparation for nationals is what this team was about! ‘No limits’ was our team motto and we did not stray away from that statement.” The annual dance competition took place in Orlando, Florida at the ESPN Center of the Walt Disney Resort and featured dance teams from all over the world, competing for a #1 spot in the country. Collierville High School also placed 4th in the Game Day division and 5th in large varsity Pom, proudly representing the 901 with highly energetic and intriguing performances.

MEMPHIS Restaurants Memphis, Tennessee is a city that takes pride in its delicious barbeque, but this is not the only local food worth praising. Restaurants in Memphis are just a few of the many things that bring in visitors, including several local restaurants such as Huey’s, Owen Brennan’s, and Itta Bena. All three contain a unique, historical root in Memphis that affects not only the ambience of the restaurant, but also the taste of the food.
By: Annelise Griffin
HUEY’S
The first thing that any Huey’s visitor will immediately notice is the countless toothpicks in the ceiling and names from years past on the wall. This bar and restaurant accommodates nine favorable locations that have been growing since 1970. Alan Gary, nicknamed as “Huey,” originally founded this business in Midtown. At this time, the building was created as a bar with few options to a menu, but later transformed into a welcoming restaurant. The ownership was later passed on to Thomas Boggs where he ran the restaurant independently until he died in 2008. Currently, all nine locations are run by the CEO, Lauren Boggs Robinson, and the COO, Ashley Boggs Robilio. The company takes pride in its appetizing menu with their most popular “World Famous Huey’s Burger” along with providing unique, live music on Sunday nights..
OWEN BRENNAN’S
Owen Brennan’s is a restaurant that caters to customers in need of a New Orleans feel. This restaurant location is formally family owned by Jim Baker and co-owned by Austin Baker, as they bring creole flavors for brunch, lunch, and dinner to the city of Memphis. Owen Brennan’s has maintained this great business since 1990 and contains many servers and cooks that have worked at the location since its opening. Their unique Sunday brunch buffet brings customers in the most during the holidays like Mother’s day. Some of the staple dishes include their shrimp and grits and pasta jambalaya. Owen Brennan’s is a definite place that Memphians love to take dignity in, as well as the restaurants Itta Bena and Huey’s.
ITTA BENA
Beale Street is an already historical field for Memphis and most definitely known to embark involvement of jazz music and savory hospitality which is embodied by Itta Bena. While this eatery has taken a hidden spot above Beale Street for eleven years, customers have grown accustomed to eating at three total locations. This restaurant was founded on July 21, 2007 by Tommy Peters and who tends to visit the buildings about once a month. Itta Bena welcomes people with “friendly hospitality in a luxurious atmosphere”. They spoil customers with beautiful live music and an exclusive theme of blue-tinted windows. This live music commonly contains world-class entertainers such as the Bobby Blue band, many who have sung with Al Green, and other forms of jazz, blues, piano, or saxophone music.

Brooks Museum “What’s important to you now will be important to you in ten years,” said Laandrea Deloyce while speaking to the crowded room of students and parents. She was a small woman, barely tall enough to see over the podium, but her words had great meaning to the high school artists before her. “Lean into your passions as much as you question them,” she continued, leaving an inspiring message for the students whose passions for creating are often dismissed with the suggestion of pursuing more traditional careers. From January 26 to February 24 the Brooks Museum payed tribute to the hard work, creativity, and talent of the Mid-South’s most promising high school art students from fifty schools across the region. The gallery was an extension of the Scholastic Art Awards, a national competition for art students from grades 7-12, and displayed our regions gold key winning pieces for the public. Although the gallery exclusively showcased high school art, any of the pieces could be mistaken for the work of a professional artist.
The gallery served not only as a recognition for their talent, but also the promising future that the students have before them. The keynote speaker, Laandrea Deloyce, spoke about how the award winning artwork serves as tangible evidence of the students’ patience, hard work, creativity, and commitment that will lead to their future success. In addition to honoring these attributes of the students, the competition also awarded several students with cash prizes and scholarships for their accomplishments. The Scholastic Art Exhibition and Awards brought to light the incredible artistic talent of the Mid-South’s own artists while also encouraging and fostering the successful futures of hardworking students. A tribute to their countless hours of creating, the exhibit was truly an amazing representation of the young artists’ dedication to their passions.
