In other news, it’s flu season once again and as usual the controversy over the flu shot is up and running. Maintain good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently. Cover your mouth when you cough of sneeze and teach children in your care to do the same. Vitamin D also plays an important role in immune health so be sure to supplement during winter months especially to optimize your vitamin D levels. Stay well hydrated but be careful to avoid high fructose corn syrup! Keep your nutrition optimum and avoid processed foods. Don’t forget the importance of fresh air and sunshine. Bundle up and go for a walk, open windows a crack even on a cold day for a quick exchange of fresh air. Last but not least, the Health Canada has engaged in a significant effort to shut down Breast Thermography as a valid screening tool for breast cancer risk assessment. Sadly, investigators have revealed that some individual companies and their staff have been claiming that infrared thermography can ‘detect’ breast cancer. The result of these types of claims is a call for breast thermography to be banned entirely. In a news release issued by Health Canada on November 28, 2012 they advise the public that: “Health Canada is advising Canadians and health care practitioners that no thermography (thermal imaging) machines have been approved to screen for breast cancer in Canada. Health Canada is not aware of any clinical evidence that thermography can be used effectively as a screening technique for the early detection of breast cancer. As such, it may present a potential risk to women relying on the results.” Breast thermography ‘machines’ are in fact highly sensitive, thermal infrared cameras. These sensitive imagers are able to detect many changes in breast tissue that may suggest breast cancer risk. However, the sensitivity of early change could mean that the next best diagnostic tool to follow up on high risk thermal imaging results would be Breast MRI since mammogram is unlikely to confirm some very small breast densities (tumours) and more sensitive imaging is necessary. It appears that in any case, breast thermography is currently unregulated and the standards for assessing images taken with these cameras are not well established. The provinces of Manitoba and Newfoundland have currently issued Cease and Desist orders regarding breast thermography but Manitoba cautions that it will do its own investigation of thermography independent of Health Canada.

Docs Talk! REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION BY THE DAVID SUZUKI FOUNDATION

Replacing Screen Time with Green Time is Good for Kids By Melissa Lem Melissa Lem is a Toronto family physician who also works in rural and remote communities across Canada. Much of her childhood was spent exploring the beautiful parks and green spaces of Ontario. She holds a faculty appointment with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, is a regular guest blogger on the environment and health for Evergreen, and enjoys being the resident medical expert on CBC television's lifestyle show Steven and Chris. Docs Talk asked Dr. Lem how contact with nature can affect child development.Docs Talk: What are some of the problems you are seeing in children who don't have a strong connection to nature? How common are these kinds of health issues in children? Dr. Lem: Time spent in nature is essential for healthy psychological and physical development in children. In fact, some researchers suggest that daily doses of "green time" can be used to prevent and treat many medical conditions. Bottom of Form Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder gets a lot of attention in the media and occurs in five to 10 per cent of Canadian children. Continuous immersion in urban environments can overstimulate youth with and without ADHD, lead ing to symptoms of inattention and impulsiveness. The substitution of active outdoor play with indoor sedentary behaviours is also a major culprit in weight gain and obesity, which affect one in four Canadian children. This is raising the childhood incidence of traditionally adult diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol issues. Other ailments including myopia, asthma, depression and slower social and motor skills development have also been linked to reduced nature exposure. Docs Talk: What kind of research has been in done in this area? Dr. Lem: Green space exposure has a wealth of positive effects on pediatric health outcomes. The existing research is impressive regarding mental health benefits. For example,ADHD symptoms improve significantly after children spend time in nature, with increased benefits seen in more green locations. Girls with greener views from their home windows score higher on measures of self-discipline. Also, depression and anxiety disorders are less

Docs Talk: What more needs to be done to convince parents, doctors and educators of the benefits of connecting children with nature? Dr. Lem: It can be hard to see the forest — or the trees, for that matter — for adults who are accustomed to living in spaces defined by asphalt and concrete. The keys to change are clear education about the benefits of nature exposure and reducing social and economic barriers to change. Doctors should remember to integrate counselling about screen time and outdoor activity into routine checkups. Nature prescriptions may also motivate children to increase their green time. If the pediatric obesity epidemic continues, scientists predict that this generation may be the first with a shorter life expectancy than their parents. This should be a huge wake-up call for all of us. Author Richard Louv coined the term "nature deficit disorder" to describe the health issues linked to the modern divide between children and the outdoors. His award-winning book Last Child in the Woods is an important resource for parents and educators. Docs Talk: What can we do to make our communities more "nature-friendly" for kids? Dr. Lem: Our physical and cultural environments must be designed to allow children to benefit from natural settings during recreation and everyday life. Mixed-use residential areas with green corridors increase the likelihood that children will walk or bike parents do with their children to help them connect to school and play. Protected urban green spaces with nature? have also been shown to reduce health inequalities Dr. Lem: There are two major concepts to consider: between children from low- and high-income role modelling and active involvement of the child. families. Communities can create natural One of the most effective ways parents can playscapes that reflect the area's environmental strengthen their child's connection to nature is to heritage instead of building artificial playgrounds. minimize screen time and embrace green time Changes in school and educational culture are also themselves. Connection to nature also improves indicators of physical health. Studies show that children who spend more time outdoors and live closer to parks engage in more physical activity. It follows that proximity to green space significantly improves the likelihood that a child will maintain a healthy weight. What's more, regular childhood exposure to green space fosters increased preference for nature-based recreation. Natural settings are ideal for children to cultivate creativity and social skills as they enjoy their recommended one hour or more of unstructured playtime per day. Playing Dirty! By Gary A. Scott D deficiency (AAP, 2009). The good news is that outdoor activities kids love, like running, jumping, climbing, playing games with friends, and taking nature walks are a great strategy for keeping children healthy.

Playing dirty can improve your health.

In addition, experts say, if we dig a little deeper—literally— there are even more benefits to be found. Playing in the dirt and even ingesting a little along the way, some researchers say, helps children build stronger immune systems. The Hygiene Hypothesis, first put forth in the 1980s, holds that when children are too clean and their exposure to parasites, bacteria, and viruses is limited early in life, they face a greater chance of having allergies, asthma, (Yazdanbakhsh, 2002) and other autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and type-one diabetes during adulthood (PlattsMills, 2005). While no one disputes the wisdom of basic, common- sense sanitation measures, such as washing hands and using hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available, experts say some exposure to dirt and germs does not hurt children, and may very well help.

I love working in our gardens especially with our grand kids. They all love digging in the dirt.

Dr. Mary Ruebush, immunologist and author of Why Dirt is Good: 5 Ways to Make Germs Your Friends, counts letting kids play in the dirt as immune-system-building step number one. “Let your child be a child,” she says. “Dirt is good. If your child isn’t coming in dirty every day, they’re not doing their job. They’re not building their immunological army. So it’s terribly important.” (CBS News, 2009). According to Dr. Joel Weinstock, director of gastroenterology and hepatology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, “Children raised in an ultraclean environment are not being exposed to organisms that help them develop appropriate immune regulatory circuits.” For their own benefit, Dr. Weinstock argues, “Children should go barefoot in the dirt, play in the dirt and not have to wash hands when they come in to eat.” (Brody, 2009) Dirt’s healing power is not limited to children. Adults can gain health benefits from dirt and earth. The Earth is a Huge Antioxidant An Olivebranch.org article entitled “Why Does Walking Barefoot on the Earth Make You Feel Better?” by Dr. Joseph Mercola says: Do you notice you feel better when you walk barefoot on the Earth? Recent research has explained why this happens. Your immune system functions optimally when your body has an adequate supply of electrons, which are easily and naturally obtained by barefoot contact with the Earth. Research indicates that electrons from the Earth have antioxidant effects that can protect your body from inflammation and its many welldocumented health consequences.

Here I am with my Grandson Garren. Playing (uh I mean working) in the garden. We believe in multi dimensional living and if you can grow and supply some of your own food there are enumerable benefits. The food costs less… is healthier and tastes better. Plus there is joy and fulfillment in the process and watching those impossibly tiny seeds of intelligence grow! There are other health benefits to be gained by sticking your hands (and feet) in dirt! Merri and I lived and worked with an Ecuadorian Yatchak (traditional medicine man) for many years. He always gardened barefoot and produced incredible rich crops. He was also always sticking his patients in the fields. At first I thought this was some Machiavellian Tom Sawyerish plan to get his gardening done. Then he explained the healing power of the earth. He often prescribed…. “stick your hands in dirt“. He even had one serious purification where he buried a patient in earth up to his neck! There is a lot of scientific evidence to back this up! A report by the National Wildlife Federation entitled “The Dirt on Dirt” says: Children who don’t spend time outside run the risk of serious health issues, such as obesity (CDC, 2008), myopia (Reuters, 2009), and vitamin

For most of our evolutionary history, humans have had continuous contact with the Earth. It is only recently that substances such as asphalt, wood, rugs, and plastics have separated us from this contact. It is known that the Earth maintains a negative electrical potential on its surface. When you are in direct contact with the ground (walking, sitting, or laying down on the earth’s surface) the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, bringing it to the same electrical potential as the earth. Living in direct contact with the earth grounds your body, inducing favorable physiological and electrophysiological changes that promote optimum health. There is an emerging science documenting how conductive contact with the Earth, which has is also known as Earthing or grounding, is highly beneficial to your health and completely safe. Earthing appears to minimize the consequences of exposure to potentially disruptive fields like “electromagnetic pollution” or “dirty electricity.” Some of the recent evidence supporting this approach involves multiple studies documenting Earthing’s improvement in blood viscosity, heart rate variability, inflammation, cortisol dynamics, sleep, autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance, and reduced effects of stress. A key to good health is regular antioxidant cleansing… so next time you feel like puttering in your organic garden… do it barefoot. This makes gardening even more healthy and fun.

Mother Earth Essentials is committed to reducing their carbon footprint, as well as growing a business in an ecologically responsible manner by incorporating green practices. They can now make the following claims.

Experts estimate we are losing 137 plant, animal & insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year.

Gardens growing at school filled with traditional plants inspired Langevin to integrate her own interests in medicinal plants and products that meet our every day needs with her own aboriginal heritage. She was also determined to find a way to engage her students while at the same time helping to preserve culture. Carrie's husband had already been integrating traditional perspectives with science in his own teaching career. Together the couple introduced ways to combine learning with projects that involved the students. When it was time, Carrie realized that with over 15 years of experience in the cosmetic industry she had never came across any product that utilized Aboriginal knowledge. She had a vision to bring the beautiful scents of Sweetgrass, Sage, Wild mint, Wild rose, berries, and Cedar to the public and to bring them even more to life by including the stories of the plants and their traditional uses on every label on the products she created. "Combining our passion for nature, education, & aboriginal knowledge, along with my experience in cosmetics, Mother Earth Essentials was born. Mother Earth Essentials is 100% Aboriginal owned and operated. Our mission is to introduce traditional Aboriginal knowledge of herbs, botanicals and scents to a worldwide audience through our high quality bath line. Our goal is to use 100% natural ingredients, the finest essential oils, real grains, berries, medicinal, and ceremonial plants that Mother Earth provides. We create hand made, environmentally friendly bath products imparting the scents and healing properties of nature. "

25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less that 1% of these tropical trees & plants have been tested by scientists. Most medicine men & shamans remaining in the Rainforests today are 70 years old or more. Each time a rainforest medicine man dies, it is as if a library has burned down. Despite this well organized company's determined commitment to 'doing it right', Carrie continues to keep the business humble with a limited staff. While they have made a splash in the media, especially following their appearance on the popular CBC's Dragons' Den, the stay focused on quality with a select staff that shares their vision. Their development news does however, include the opening of a new Mother Earth Essentials Store in Edmonton on April 1 of 2013.

When Carrie began working to help promote spa services offered at the Sawridge Hotel in Jasper, she worked in all aspects of sales and marketing but wanted to do more. She accumulated successful completion of courses in natural and herbal medicines through the Wild Rose College of Natural Healing. Eventually, she went back to school and completed an education degree allowing her to become a teacher. Her teaching career began at the Amiskwaciy Academy for junior high and high school students where she taught for 5 years. Their vision is "to honour the Aboriginal community and reflect its cultures, values, ancestral knowledge and traditions in achieving excellence in education."

As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources.

At the new store you will find a complete selection of Mother Earth Essentials products. These include Essential Oils " Our products are biodegradable and not harmful to the environment " We pack our shipments with recycled paper and we re-use our boxes then recycle them. We often use and re-use boxes from other companies. They post facts on their website to contribute to consumer awareness that are based on local statistics as well as worldwide implications. Mother Earth Essentials wants their customers to be aware of some "alarming facts". Alarming Facts: Alberta/Canada More than 80 per cent of Alberta's native grasslands have been ploughed under & turned into cropland during the past century. Roughly 75% of the wetlands around Calgary and Edmonton were eliminated by 1966. In the last 50 years, it is estimated that about 60 % of wetlands in the aspen parkland have been drained (Alberta Water Resources Commission 1990), and over 90 % of wetlands in the prairie & parkland have now been modified by agricultural activities (Turner et al. 1987).

Only 20% of the world's original forests remain intact. Canada contains 1/3 of what is left At last count, there were 340 species of plants & animals in Canada, including 41 in Alberta, that are vulnerable, threatened or endangered. Twenty seven of those are either extinct or extirpated (no longer found in this country). And those represent only the species that have been assessed thus far by a government appointed committee of scientists. Alarming Facts: World Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% & experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.

It is all part of the fight or flight reaction built into all of us, enabling us to either overcome an attacker or dash away to safety. The endorphin protein seems to remain constant in laughter, even as the stress hormones are being shut down. Virtually all of us learn to laugh at four months of age, something which requires the action of fifteen facial muscles and changes in breathing. When we laugh, at first the heart rate increases as does our rate of breathing. After our laughter ceases, there is a period of relaxation, easing muscle tension and useful in breaking the muscle spasm in some neuralgias and rheumatism. WOMEN AND PAIN TOLERANCE From the intensity of their pain to the way they deal with it, men and women are different, suggests a growing body of evidence. A woman's tolerance of pain may have more to do with the power of her reproductive hormones than the strength of her muscles. Fluctuations in hormone levels might contribute to variations in the severity of women's pain symptoms across the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy

A farmer can spray chemicals to kill bugs, then spray more chemicals to kill weeds, and then add chemicals to the soil, and we don’t require any labels.

But if they want to use this label, they have to spend a lot of money and fill out a mountain of paperwork to prove they didn’t use chemicals!

Recently our long time friend and health care adviser Dr. Joe Spano sent me this note. “Gary, I have avoided the Influenza thus far and hope you and Merri do so, as well. I have been exposed many times-it is a mini-epidemic. Best wishes, Joe” This was of some concern to me since I do not like to take vaccines and a New york Times article entitled “Reassessing Flu Shots as the Season Draws Near” by Roni Caryn Rabin shows that flue shots might be ineffective as well as dangerous. The article says (bolds are mine): It’s flu-shot season, and public health officials are urging everyone over 6 months of age to get one. Many businesses provide on-site flu shots, and some hospitals have told staff members that they have to wear masks if they do not get the vaccine. By 2020, United States health leaders want 80 percent of the population to get yearly shots. For vaccine manufacturers, it’s a bonanza: Influenza shots — given every year, unlike many other vaccines — are a multibillion-dollar global business. But how good are they? Last month, in a step tantamount to heresy in the public health world, scientists at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota released a report saying that influenza vaccinations provide only modest protection for healthy young and middle-age adults, and little if any protection for those 65 and older, who are most likely to succumb to the illness or its complications. Moreover, the report’s authors concluded, federal vaccination recommendations, which have expanded in recent years, are based on inadequate evidence and poorly executed studies. Some people have reactions to flu shots. Other have religious beliefs and others simply believe that vaccines have toxins in them. Now we can see that they also may be ineffective. However when Dr. Joe gives me a health idea, I listen. His resume shows why: Joe attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans from 1959 – 1963. His internship was done at Mixed Medical and Surgery; Kings County hospital center, Brooklyn, New York. His Medical Residency was at Veterans Administration Hospital and Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans. He had special training at Resident in Clinical Cardiology under John H. Phillips M.D., Chief of Cardiology, Veterans Administration Hospital, New Orleans. Joe was an instructor in Physical Diagnosis at Tulane University School of Medicine. He was a Research Fellow in Medicine for gastroenterology at Harvard University, Thorndike Memorial Laboratory, Boston City Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He served in the Military from 1967 to 1969 in the USAF, 3560th USAF Hospital, Webb AFB, Texas; Chief of Internal Medicine; Chief of Professional Services; Chief of Laboratory Services; Chief of Radiology. Joe has honours, membership and diplomat to American Board of Internal Medicine, Harvard Trained Gastroenterologist, American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, Phi Beta Pi Medical Fraternity. He is listed in ”Best Doctors in America“, America’s Top Physicians (Research Council of America) and was chief of staff at Naples Community Hospital. I asked Joe for suggestions and he recommended a product with Echinacea and other herbs to enhance the immune system, a line of defence taken at the first sign of exposure to germs and illnesses. Here is what we learned: A product with a blend of Echinacea and other herbs may support the body’s natural immune response to bacterial and viral challenges. The immune system uses a vast array of beneficial immune cells and processes to protect against infectious organisms. White blood cells play a vital role in the body’s immune system defense, as several different types destroy harmful organisms by ingesting them through the process of phagocytosis. Other immune system defenses rely on chemical mediators to help boost immune responses by stimulating the action and production of other immune system cells. This product has been formulated with several herbal extracts that safely support the body’s ability to mount an appropriate and effective immune defense as follows: Echinacea: Echinacea is a well-known medicinal herb with a long history of use. Studies have shown that Echinacea exhibits an immune-stimulating effect by increasing levels of white blood cells and phagocytic activity. Echinacea also promotes levels of interferon, which play an important part in the body’s defense mechanism. Astragalus: Astragalus products are derived from the roots of Astragalus membranaceus and have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. Polysaccharides in Astragalus have been shown to stimulate the immune system by increasing development of active immune cells and heightening immune system activity. Elderberry: Elderberry is a tall tree-like shrub native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa which has been shown to have immune modulating and antioxidant properties. Research suggests Elderberry may help boost immune function by increasing production of important chemical mediators involved in cellular immunity. Goldenseal: This perennial herb is native to the northeastern United States. The primary active constituents of goldenseal are alkaloids which may enhance immune function by activating special white blood cells called macrophages. Studies show that goldenseal may also help regulate processes leading to inflammation of mucous membranes found in the nose and lungs. Berberine, an alkaloid in goldenseal, may also provide additional benefit as it has several metabolic and inhibitory actions against a number of harmful microbes. Licorice: Licorice is derived from the root of the low-growing shrub Glycyrrhiza glabra and has been widely used for centuries. Scientific studies have revealed that glycyrrhizin, one of the active ingredients in licorice, has modulatory activity on the body’s immune responses. This product can be used as needed on a periodic basis to support immune system responsiveness by stimulating beneficial immune cells and immune system activity. All ingredients contained in this product are natural and have an established history of safe dietary intake at the recommended levels. So as I pass on Joe’s wishes to all of you, hoping you avoid the flu this year and if you feel at all like you’ve got the ‘bug’, remember the qualities of the herbs discussed above!

Any person whose liver is not within the normal levels of function is especially at risk. These individuals would include those who consume alcohol at amounts of more than a couple of drinks per week and those who already have a liver problem such as hepatitis or other liver disease. For these peoples, acetaminophen can cause a temporary or a permanent shutdown of liver function. This can actually lead to hepatitis or even death. Complete and permanent liver shutdown can occur in some individuals who overdose on acetaminophen and do not receive prompt specific treatment. There is another important issue with acetaminophen which doesn't get a level of attention equal to its seriousness. We know not to give aspirin to a young child with a fever due to the risk of Rye’s Syndrome. Instead we have been giving children a liquid formulation of acetaminophen. The liquid formulation is. Children have suffered serious liver damage and death from liver failure due to their parent's overdosing them on acetaminophen. And from another study Alcohol and Tylenol - DON'T MIX! "A former White House aide who claims that ordinary doses of Tylenol destroyed his liver has been awarded more than $8.8 million in a federal court suit against the manufacturer of the popular pain-reliever. "I had the flu and then I wake up with my liver gone," Antonio Benedi said. "They ruined my life." The drug's manufacturer, McNeil Consumers Products Co., denied that Tylenol had anything to do with Benedi's liver disorder and said it would appeal Thursday's decision by a federal court jury in suburban Alexandria, Va.” Antonio Benedi was a former special assistant to President Bush Sr. who claimed in a law suit that his liver had been "sensitized" to react to Tylenol by his habit of drinking wine with dinner every day. Benedi took the drug for several days to combat the flu and eventually lapsed into a coma and was hospitalized. In the law suit Benedi's attorney argued that McNeil Consumer Products knew of the danger of mixing the habitual use of alcohol with the acetaminophen but had taken no action to warn the public. After hearing four days of testimony in U.S. District Court, a six-member jury awarded Benedi $7.8 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages. Benedi ultimately required a liver transplant and then went on to face damage to his kidneys due to the anti-rejection drugs. During the trial the Court heard testimony from experts who claimed that ordinary doses of Tylenol can cause a toxic reaction in the liver of someone who regularly drinks alcohol. A US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended recently that Tylenol and several other types of over the-counter pain relievers carry alcohol warning labels. The Alternatives to Drugs Curcumin (from the spice turmeric) Curcumin is a root that is used to add the golden colour and flavour to curry and other foods. It has beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been used to combat the pain and swelling of arthritis. Some researchers think that curcumin is as powerful an anti-

inflammatory as prescription cortisone. There may be additional benefits to taking Curcumin. It may also help to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by thinning the blood to prevent unnecessary blood clots, lower blood sugar in diabetics, and help the body to counteract carcinogens. Chinese Medicine has a history or using the herb to treat colic, menstrual cramping, and shoulder pain. Curcumin has been shown to be as effective as cortisone and phenylbutazone in decreasing inflammation. In one study with men who had surgeryrelated hernia, this compound reduced tenderness much more than the drug or a placebo. Like cayenne, curcumin contains pain relievers that stop the neurotransmitter substance P from sending its pain signals to the brain. It also works in several ways to decrease inflammation—by reducing prostaglandin activity. Researchers also believe that curcumin increases cortisone's anti-inflammatory action by making the body more sensitive to this hormone. So the next time you sit down to a curry dinner, consider that you are doing far more for your body than simply giving it a flavourful meal. The recommended dosage of curcumin is 900-1800 mg daily in capsule form or a tea may be prepared from the turmeric root at a dose of 0.5-1 gram per cup. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is a vitamin that is an overlooked source of pain relief. Vitamin B1 is particularly helpful for patients with neuritis, shooting pains in the legs related to chronic liver disease or alcoholism, and diabetic neuropathy (nerve disease caused by diabetes), as well as nerve and joint pains associated with a B1 deficiency. In an impressive study of the benefits of B1 for pain relief, the vitamin was given to 133 people who had headaches, joint pain, nerve pain, and neuritis or pain caused by inflammation of the nerves. None of these patients had previously found relief with conventional pain pills or physical therapy. These patients were given 1-2 grams of B1 once or twice daily. Here are the surprising results. Patients reported that 78% of headaches were improved, 71% of spine or joint pain improved, and more than 62% of patients with neuralgia reported relief. To optimize your results with B1, studies have shown that in order to get the best effect from watersoluble vitamins (for example, vitamins B and C); they should be taken at least twice a day. B1 can be found in almonds, whole-grain wheat and oats, nuts, and beans. As a supplement B1 can be taken at doses beginning at 25mg. Vitamin B3 or niacin is a potent anti-arthritis supplement. In some people, it may reduce pain and increase mobility in arthritic joints within 3-6 weeks. The ability of B3 to make joints more mobile has been known for more than 40 years. Niacin (B3) is readily converted into niacinamide. Note of Caution, niacin or niacinamide should not be taken by people with chronic liver diseases. Additionally, most people find the ‘flush free’ version of this supplement far more comfortable so they avoid the rash and discomfort associated with the ‘flush’ that sometimes results from taking regular niacin. The suggested dose for arthritis is 500 mg taken 3 times a day.

Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine is arguably the most important of the B vitamins although all vitamins are necessary for a fully functioning immune system. Vitamin B6 has a unique role in treating chronic pain. Pain patients tend to have a smaller supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Our body cells have receptors where pain medications traditionally interact with cells. One of the damaging side effects of long-term use of pain-killing drugs seems to be that the number of receptor sites for these drugs diminish. This means that those drugs are less effective and a whole syndrome resulting as increased tolerance with lesser results occurs. Patients usually end up taking and more and often stronger pills or their pain will increase, and if they stop taking their medicines, they may suffer from severe rebound pain. Withdrawal from conventional pain medications can be very difficult. Evidence shows that when patients are given B6 as they are withdrawn from their medicines, they do much better. B6 is also helpful in reducing the inflammatory component of arthritis. In animals, B6 deficiencies have been shown to cause a version of human arthritis. Vitamin B6 has also been used successfully to treat the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome and unexplained cyclical breast pain. Although doses vary from person to person, many people find it helpful to take 100-150 mg of B6, one time per day. *Note of Caution. Some medical literature contains reports of neuritis or nerve damage caused by using large amounts of B6 (ranging from 1000-6000 mg per day) for long periods of time. There are also reports indicating that certain people may develop neuritis from as little as 300400 mg per day without other B vitamins present. Examine your vitamin and supplement combinations to ensure that you are not taking excessive doses. B6 is found in beans, Brussel sprouts, cantaloupe, cauliflower, lentils, whole wheat, and rice. The most important factor may be to assure the presence of other B vitamins such as what you may find in a B complex formulation. Vitamin B12 deficiency in its blatant form is normally associated with pernicious anaemia. But, B12 has also shown impressive pain-killing abilities. In one study, 400 patients suffering from vertebral pain were given 5000 mcg of B12 a day. In relatively short order (within 6-16 days), 50% of the patients were experiencing relief that they self rated as "good" to "very good." Almost all of the remaining patients reported at least satisfactory results. Only 10 of the 400 said they felt no improvement at all. Larger doses of the vitamin have been successfully used to treat the pain of cancer and degenerative neuropathy. B12, as with most of the supplements we are discussing in this book, has many other benefits to human health and is vital to the reduction of homocysteine levels. The recommended dose for the neurologically active form of vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) is to be taken sublingually in doses of 5 mg (5000 mcg) or higher a day for pain. Ask your doctor to monitor your blood levels. There are dozens of herbs and supplements as well as dietary change that can help you live pain free and drug free.
