01 Ecofriendly Receipt

Design Concept Lots of receipts everyday. If the receipts can be turned into renewable sources, the concept would in the end be very ecofriendly.

8 Material Study

We want to create a new kind of paper that has seeds inside. When the paper no longer is needed, just bury it in the dirt and it will become another plant! This material can be applied to receipts, tickets or other short life-spanned paper products.

Background and Problem

Too many receipts

10 Material Study

We keep gathering receipts, traffic tickets and bills everyday which will end up as a lot of trash. Even though we can receive some of them in digital format, there are some situations in which we still need them in paper format. There are also some people who do not feel comfortable with digital items, so we thought - can we do something about it?

Identifying Opportunities

Interviews & Direct observation The direction of these questions is mainly in the behavior of taking receipts to know more about the thought the consumers consider when they come up with receipts.

Evaluating Alternatives

This is how we did it

First we had to make paper pulp by soaking some paper in water. After making it wet and soft we put them in a blender. Then Filter the paper pulp with grid board - the bigger fiber will stay on the net. Put it in the oven and dry out all the water for one day.

16 Material Study

After a study on different seeds we chose to use seeds that have more capacity of heat and pressure. In this attempt we used tomato seeds, which are small and can stand the heat.

In some places a crack occurs when the sheet goes through the printer. This is due to an uneven spread of the pulp, something which should be improved in the future.

Testing

22 Material Study

To test the agar brick we made, we tested it through some machining procedure. It turns out that the agar brick was strong enough to make a simple product model.

Application

We made the agar brick into a flowerpot.Agar is an eco-friendly product and when the plant is dead or the flowerplot is useless it can be buried in the ground. The agar fiber will atomatically decomposite.

03 Bamboo curving

Design Description

26 Material Study

This project is about helping a technologist mass produce his work. Our goal is to design molds to normalization the bamboo element and put it into mass production. The most important thing we do is to test on tolerance and bounce back while shaping the bamboo.

Material testing

Experimental element Independent variables : Angle / Steaming time Dependent variables : Force

Bamboo is an organic material, so it will definitly spring back when we put force on it. We have to do some test on the correlation between spring back angle and and other variables, and make sure it won't crack when we put force on it

Experiment process

Soften the fiber of bamboo with steam, steaming time is one of the virables.About the mold, we use CNC milling the wood and then use hand tools to revise the ages and fix them together. After bending, we put it into oven to fry the water inside and keep the shape.

Result analysis

30 Material Study

We measure the angle change after takeing it out of oven. Collect all bamboo sample's data make them into diagram to see regular pattern of the spring back angle. This is the fisrt stage of material study, this project will keep working on until the chair can fix into production line.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

34 Material Study

The process of this workshop is really different from what I’ve learned so far. Normally we start with a product, but this time we start with the study of materials and experiencing these raw substances. After we gain enough understanding of this, we transform it into a product

Design Methodology Visualization of tactility tialling approach

1 experience formulation 2 material selection

3 artefact creation

3+5 making

Material analysis Experience word & Material selection

36 Material Study

First, we used matrix to analysis the feature of different materials. The words are from“rough” to “smooth”and “sturdy” to “soft”. Second, we selected “provocative”as our topic. We defined “provocative” that intended or intending to arouse sexual desire or sexual interest. In our con- clusion, we believe that people will feel provocative when being touch by tongue on neck.

Experimental Setup

TEST1 We prepared lots of materials such as boiled fungus, tofu, ruler, jelly and boiled Konn- yaku to test on a male and a female’s necks.

TEST 2 We narrow down all the option to four materials that will test on the people :metal ruler, aluminum, boiled black fungus and boiled Konnyaku. We use App to record their heart rate and covered their eyes while laying on bed.

Brainstorm on translation redesign

38 Material Study

After test, we found out that most males and some females like soft and warm fungus because it reminded them of kissing experiences. However, some females like hard and cold materials because they felt more excited and interesting. We started to come up different products with those features and we use to touch our bodies.

Model making

We decided to use silicon to mimic the smooth and soft feeling of fungus. We used clay and plaster to make models and poured silicon in. We made the silicons with folds like fungus. Besides, we came up with lots of products related to water like swimming and bath products. Putting silicon in warm water, it is possible to mimic the wet and smooth feeling of tongue.

Testing and surveys

40 Material Study

We invited a couple to try the product at the bathroom. They hold the balls to scrub each others’ bodies.Different from the normal bath balls, our product increased the soft texture of silicon so that the ball had the conflict feeling of smooth and rough texture at the same time, which made the product more interesting. Besides, the texture of the cold metal made the couple feel more excited.

Final product

We modified the final product based on those feedbacks. First, we tried to use different colors for balls and silicons, and we found that white balls with red or white silicons are best matches. Besides, we also changed the shape of silicons to be smaller wave. In addition, we also replaced the metal chain to thinner stain- less chain.

05 Children juicer Press for fun

Concept

Behind our design is the idea of a toy for children which would enhance their experience in making things on their own. We wanted to create a procedure through which children can learn to recognize different fruits, identify colors and train hand-eye coordination. What we have designed is a juicer for kids that is safe and can be used without electricity. The rounded working space allows for 2-3 users at the same time which allows children to cooperate and have fun together.

User Process

Parents help by preparing the fruit for the kid, and let the kids do the rest of the procedure.

Kids can play with their parents or their friend. After they have finished, they can share the juice with each other.

How it works

46 Product Design

The cover is design into double layer, the screw thread inside just like the child-proof bottle.

Children can only rotate the upper part themselves. If the cover needs to be opened, the parent has to do it. In this case, we can make sure that children have no chance of touching the blades inside.

The smiling mouth has a little hole in which fruit can be put to slide into the cup, without the need to remove the cover.

Mechanical Part

The mechanical model was inspired by a mop. The basket can spin by treading the bar.

spring pushing platform

There is a screw thread inside the cylinder so that when the platform outside the cup is pushed, the screw will make the blade spin. And so, the juicer can work by mechanical power.

06 NXT baby cart

DESIGN DISCRIPTION In this project we use Lego NXT prototyping intelligence baby cart. The functions are for parents to comfort baby and make the cart become more user friendly.

Function

Adjustable platform

The stroller has a fold-out platform on which the parents can put items or change the baby's diaper. When finished, a button can be pressed and the platform will be folded and hidden under the seat.

50 Product Design

Color sensor

The color sensor is placed in front of the baby seat. The baby can reach for the sensor and move it horizontally. When the sensor registers change of colors, it will automatically change songs. Different songs are triggered by different colors.

Button control

Pressing the right button twice will make the baby stroller move along a fixed route. We added the function as we learnt that a change of scenes can comfort an anxious baby. The stroller will steadily move along a route that the parent set, so that the parent can take a rest and do not have to worry about the child's safety.

52 Special Project

Time flies, we dye.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

54 Special Project

In this project we want to extract natural color from campus plant and use on traditional dying. In the end we will apply this skill on the product we design and creating our brand.

Searching dyeing materials

Pigment testing

56 Special Project

We did lots of research on how can we get the color we wnat and keep them stick on the frabic, We have tried chemical pigment and natural pigments from plants.

Selecting fribic

To find the frabic that is suitable for dyeing, we do lots of experiment on frabic. We have tried cotton, nylon, slik.we also put fabric into NAOH to remove impurities

Extract color from plants

Plants that we selected. Each plant. Our idea is to use material from nature, so we chose plants found at our university campus. The product is not only eco-friendly, but also represents our university NCKU.

Procedure

Creating pattern

62 Special Project

We tied the fabric in different ways to make the pigment attach onto the fabric differently to create patterns.

The fabric was put into the pot to boil with the leaves. This step had to be repeated many times to let more pigment be soaked into the fabric. In the end of the procedure, we wrapped the fabric with aluminium. Aluminium ions interact with pigment, letting the color stay longer.
