LEE YI CHIN

From Design to Research I design and research origami with specific interests in geometry shape, computational fabrication, and movement. I aspire to master in computation and robotics in order to collaborate with engineers and scientists to expand the context of folding structure and research shape grammar further.

ORIGAMI RESEARCH

Origami research started with interest. I tried to find the gap that could form a research objective through folding practice and contextual review. At the beginning, I folded various structures to understand the principle and possibility of this craft.

PAT TERN STUDY They are same selected data and different with the sequence, each sequencing method can lead to unique outcome. After organizing the result of sequencing, we can analyze what kind of factors cause the result, and apply the sequence to different application such as illusion and perspective.

ORIGAMI RESEARCH 9

V-TUBE VARIATON Start from origami tube

SPIKEY FAMILY

During the exploration of origami application, I found out the studies of origami tube, which is based on Miura structure. Origami tube obtained the feature of original origami structure but also reinforced the structure itself by forming the tube system. I discovered that, the space created by joining two pieces of origami sheets provides a chance to develop a modular object. The characteristic of the modular object gives origami an opportunity to become a self-supported system.

ASSEMBLE VARIATION After several deformation studies, I derived another three module from v-tube, and designed them into different selfstanding module: V-shape, W-shape, M-shape, I-shape. All the modular units can be connected to each other vertically and horizontally. I organized four types of connection that could provide different functions.

STACKING The chevron units could also be stack vertically by adding extra base, and even stand more stable than Spiky wall. The two parallel lines folded towards the same direction could create a surface that might be proper for other attachment.

WEAV ING I rotated the chevron units 90 degrees changing the standing position, suddenly, so many strips jumped out in front of me. The horizontal strips remind me “weave. I used long strips to fix all units together, and it works out quite well. By adopting paper strips as weaving material, I could decide the rotating direction of each module. With the rotating feature, the origami structure started to have various form and connecting smoothly.

FORMING THE SPACE The origami unit was able to freely form the curvature and deliver a feeling of logic rhythm. I used grasshopper to simulate the possibilities of the space layout. When building the space scale pavilion, I applied traditional mould process to produce folding crease on each flat unit. After folding, each module unit were woven together by the paper street and finally forming a space.

FINA L S H OW OF O RGAM I R ESEARC H The exhibition presented the process and the final work of a project-led research. The research is to design a self-standing modular origami structure and conduct pattern studies on the paper structure. There are two tracks in my research, origami structure study and pattern study. Each origami structure experiment will have corresponding pattern study.

DIGITAL FABRICATION I have always been interested in observing human body's movement, everybody have their own habit and body behaving differently, which makes each of us unique. The experimental film which present sequencing motion inspired me a lot. The concept of this work is to record body movements and transfer them into unique sculpture through Rhino and Grasshopper. The final output uses stereolithography to present the body movement in accumulated bezier curve with aesthetics expression.

X UNIT Folding Curtain

X- U NI T

The project name 'X-unit' refers to the creasing pattern of the final design. The folding unit was inspired by 'waterbomb' folding. With this project, the origami structure was broken down into the smallest unit and then the assembling method was explored. Translucent polypropylene was chosen as the final material, and moulded to produce a creased pattern. The unit can be assembled into an irregular form; it is therefore very suitable to act as the curtain in this exhibition, allowing natural light to shine in to the exhibition space.

SLEEPING BEAUTY Ballet and M u lt imed ia YENTING CHO Studio Animatino Designer: Yi-Chin, LEE

I created an animation by combining ballet and programming base on waltz, Sleeping Beauty. I studied the ballet dancer’s movement and used Processing to program the geometry shape morphing with the body movement. I like the rhythm, and the logic within the dancing, the repetitive patterns of the human body structure makes me calm. Therefore, I did lots of sketches on what kind of structure matches with ballet and the sequence I want to present through ballet.

In this project, the body movements were captured by a depth camera. All the body skeleton transferred into coordinates so that I could control the date and produce the animation through Processing. In the sketch process, I tried to create a human skeleton in different posture and connected the joints to make the possible geometric pattern. In the final animation, I designed the aesthetically shape morphing sequence that follow the music and the dance.
