Dear TGO Community, The 2024 renovation of our golf course is fast approaching! This week we hosted a pre-construction meeting with our contractors and consultant to finalize the process and coordinate the timing of work. The course is set to close after play on Sunday, April 14, with work commencing on the course immediately on Monday, April 15. The irrigation project will begin even before this closure date, as thousands of feet piping must be fused together before starting to install piping on the course itself. Some of the pipe has already arrived and is now being stored on our practice range. Chuck and Shane wanted me to convey that you will see grass in sections of our golf course will begin to turn brown soon. This is part of the renovation process. The “Spray Out” of areas around the greens and tees is set to begin on Tuesday, January 23. The second application is set for Thursday, February 22. A third and final application will take place later in March. The sprayed areas need to totally dry before play can begin, so the course will be closed in the mornings on these treatment days. Mother Nature may cause some delays because conditions must be just right for these applications. Cliff and I will keep you updated through future Manager’s Corner and Chairman’s Notes as we progress through the renovation. You may notice a few projects going on throughout the community. Our Golf Maintenance Team is improving the golf driving range parking area. They’ve created a new shell rock waste area and planted a few sawgrass bushes to improve the overall look in that area. This week our buildings team replaced the tile flooring in the two Library bathhouses with a non-slip tile. This tile was changed out for safety reasons, as we received several complaints about the previous tile being very slippery when wet. Wildfire is real threat to TGO, and responding to it is something we practice every year. It’s time for our annual Wildfire Emergency Evacuation Exercise, taking place on Friday, January 26, between 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Volunteers from our Firewise Committee, CSA board members, maintenance staff and courtesy patrol officers will participate. Representatives from Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Brevard County Fire and Rescue (BCFR), Florida State Forestry Department, and St. Johns Water Management District (SJWMD) may also join us for this exercise. These agencies are invited to bring in emergency and firefighting equipment, and provide direction and oversight during the drill. This drill tests our readiness, emergency communications, and cooperation with local emergency authorities in the event of a fast-moving wildfire threat. No action is expected from our residents, and nobody will be asked to evacuate. BUT… following the drill, between 11:00 am -12:00 pm, TGO residents are invited to meet and greet with Firewise members and agency partners in the Manor parking lot. Fire and emergency vehicles may be on display. Our Employee Fund campaign collected just over $20,000 through 300 individual donations by TGO residents. On Monday of this week, the fund was distributed in cash ($370 each) to our 54 hourly, full-time, front-line CSA workers, including our golf and CSA maintenance teams, recreation team and lawn crews. Your contribution honored their hard work in 2023. This fund provided our most essential workers with a great start to 2024. Thank you deeply for your generosity and blessings to our CSA workers! Sincerely,
Billy Specht

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES! Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited What is Sulfation?
Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge. Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.
We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process! • Increase Your Battery Life-Span • Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries • Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition • Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries • We provide you a detailed health report for each battery

Community Information & Notices Newcomer Orientation Meeting
Don and Bev Holladay
Last year TGO lost both my parents, Donald and Beverly Holladay of Grande Haven Drive. Originally retiring in St. Augustine, FL, they never felt at home until they were invited to TGO. They knew that this was where they belonged and built their home here in 2000. They first started RVing in 1965 when they bought a retired school bus that they converted. They joined the FMCA with the low number of 3005. Through the FMCA our family met many others with homemade bus RVs and after 15 RVs, the bus was still the best. My father, Don, volunteered on the Wildlife Committee, Beautification Committee, was treasurer of the Activities Committee, volunteering with the Nature Center and he was with the Citizens Patrol of Brevard County Sheriff for 10 years. My mom, Bev, joined various groups and sororities and hosted Rallies. She also served Board of Directors or District 1. My parents’ health greatly improved after moving to TGO; with all the rallies, cruises and an RV trip to Alaska, they sure found the right place for themselves. I am now blessed to call this place my home. - Joyce Adams -

Community Information & Notices CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. Please do not allow pets to • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. urinate on trash or debris. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. The crew has to pick this up! • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)
Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Bill and Lynda
SHAW If you are an attendee of our community TGO Church, chances are you are familiar with Bill and Lynda Shaw. In our minds, they are extraordinary people who have dedicated their lives to helping those who are less fortunate than the rest of us. Bill and Lynda have been residents of TGO since relocating here in 2012 from Philadelphia. Like the rest of us, they were ardent RVers and first discovered TGO in 1988. During that visit, they met Judy Rockwell (Willeke), who graciously showed them around the resort. Although some time passed, when they returned in 2011, they were fully prepared to make a purchase. “After finally making our purchase here in 2011, we found ourselves in the realty office when Judy looked up and said, ‘Bill Shaw, how are you?’ We hadn’t seen her since 1988!,” explained Bill. “And she remembered my name!” During that period, Bill held the position of Director of Sales at Exide Technologies, where he was extensively involved in projects at the Space Center. “I specialized in selling batteries for use in the Space Station and the Space Shuttle. My sales representative, who resided in Sanford, and his wife would join Lynda and me in our motorhomes, leading us to discover TGO. “Due to my role at Exide, achieving our goals resulted in numerous customer trips, providing us with the opportunity to travel extensively around the world. “One of our most cherished trips was to England. We traveled from Paris to England across the English Channel, accompanied by a local representative, providing us with a close-up view of all the sites. “During a trip to Greece, Lynda had a bad fall, breaking her leg in two places and her ankle. Airlines wouldn’t take her due to the cast as she wasn’t able to sit down. The doctor came in representing the insurance company and gave us our choices. The first was a stretcher flight, where a stretcher would be put over six seats so she could keep her leg straight and the doctor would travel with us. The second choice was on Air Force One, as George Bush Jr. was visiting the Pope at that time and the doctor said he could get us on

that flight as he was a representive of the embassy. We ended up on the stretcher flight, the insurance company had to buy eight seats to accommodate us and the doctor.” Today, both Bill and Lynda are deeply involved in the TGO Church’s stewardship for those in need, dedicating endless hours to helping the homeless throughout the Titusville area. “I suppose the reason for my deep involvement in giving goes back to my childhood. I was raised in Philadelphia, and experiencied firsthand what it’s like to have needs, which fueled my commitment. Over the years, I haven’t had the time or opportunities to help people as much as I would have liked. I do now, though. “At the church, we provide bins for people to drop off canned goods. We’ve taken on the responsibility of distributing these to the needy. I envisioned expanding this service beyond just canned goods to include items like clothes, bedding, and almost anything that could fit in my car. We initiated this about five years ago. “Thanks to the generosity of our TGO residents, this program has grown to the point where our car is now filled every day - and sometimes twice with donations. We also collaborate with the Nature Center as they receive donations, which they pass on to us.”
After spending about an hour and a half listening to Bill’s stories, we could have easily made this article a dozen pages long. However, here are a few that left the most significant impression on us. We’re sure you’ve noticed panhandlers at the corners of I-95 and Cheney Highway. These individuals represent just a fraction of a larger community residing in the local woods along South Street, behind Lowes, and near Cumberland Farms - the very areas Bill concentrates on for distributing goods to the homeless. While the exact count of people in these woods remains uncertain, Bill estimates it to be upwards of 40 to 50, including some with families. He has created a connection with some of them, meeting on a regular schedule, and they assist him in distributing clothes and goods to the people in the woods. “I targeted a couple of them,” said Bill. “One hangs out at the corner of Park and South, and the other, a woman, who lives in the woods in a trailer close to the Mockingbird station. She was living on the ground and prayed for a trailer and one day it was there - I’m not sure how. I use the two of them as my distributors. I show them what I have, and they take what they feel they and others can use. One day I picked up some quilts and pillows from someone on Baytree and took them to her. It was during a cold spell and she was very appreciative.
Although she has a small trailer and the company of her dog, Elizabeth does not enjoy many of the benefits we do. “She has a wagon which she pulls to the Baptist Church down from Cumberland to retrieve her six bottles of water. It was a bit rickety so we got her a new wagon.” Bill actively supports North Brevard Charities and collaborates extensively with Liberty Lodge. Liberty Lodge focuses on assisting men transitioning out of prison and those striving to overcome drug and alcohol addiction. Bill shares, “We provide them with food consistently, and for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, we supply the meals. We also give them 500 hot dogs each year - covered by the TGO church. “The TGO community has been incredibly supportive of our cause. We acquire canned goods from Nickel Bingo and distribute them to various charities. The books we receive are sent to Prison Books, benefiting over 2800 prisoners nationwide. “In the unfortunate event of someone passing away in the park, we collaborate with Alma and Dan O’Brien to clear out homes. They generously provide us with items they believe can be put to good use, resulting in a substantial collection. Importantly, we don’t restrict these donations solely to those in the woods; instead, we distribute them to all the mentioned charities. These organizations, in turn, sell the items to support their valuable work. “We’ve expanded our efforts to If it’s wearable, edible or usable... we’ll take it.” pick up furniture that people no longer “There is also a group known as the “Under the Bridge need. The TGO Sawdust Club
It’s much more than just a club
There are several reasons to become a member of the TGO Sawdust Club, but none better than the comradery you’ll share with a great group of men and women. Yes... women, this is just not another “good ole boys” club. If you own in TGO and enjoy the smell of sawdust, the TGO Sawdust club just might be for you. The Sawdust Club was formed back in 1996 - by a few TGO residents who saw a need for a woodworking facility. It slowly grew into a facility that now houses all types of tools including various saw types, hammers, wrenches, drills, nail guns, sanders, air compressor, ladders, auto floor jack and more. If you are a member, you are allowed to check these out for a 48 hour loan period. Their fixed shop equipment, for both metal and wood work, includes lathes, band saws, grinders, planers, edgers, drill presses, sanders, vises, clamps, jigs and more. The shop itself has grown quite a bit over the years. It now has all LED lighting and is air conditioned. There is an individual machine dust collection system, a compressed air system, work and assembly benches, sand blasting, welding and paint booth. The facility has gone through several renovations, along with machine and tool upgrades. It is always in a state of progress. There are about 250 members as of today. They call it the Sawdust Club, but it’s more like a fellow... It’s also a place for sharing... much ship club where members freely share their projects with others, quite often seeking advice from the more experienced members. Sharing tips and ideas on how best to complete a project. Collaboration and sharing are routine values for both inexperienced members and the experienced old timers. A quick tour of their facility will showcase some of the DIY projects the members are working on. They can be as simple as turning a bowl on a lathe (which is not simple), making night stands or candle holders or personal signs or plaques, to building a Murphy bed. If you can think of it, it can be built at the Sawdust Club. As we mentioned earlier, there are several lady members and husband and wife teams that belong to the “Club.” It’s a great way to spend your time either working on personal or community volunteer projects. Members often provide valuable services to CSA and the Nature Center, such as shelving, signage, refinishing and ramps and railings. The Sawdust Club was also responsible for designing and building the “Retired Flag Box” you’ll find on the back side of the CSA offices. It was a team effort that helped produce this box which has proved to be a great success. The Sawdust Club has seasonal monthly meetings. If you have recently moved to TGO and found that “down-sizing” left you short on tools and equipment, or if you are filling time, now that you are retired, and want to be more creative, The Sawdust Club just might be for you. For more information, contact the Club Secretary, Laura Sievers, at 630 408-6461.

Sawdust Club member, Ruth Drexler, displays some of her ‘segmenting’ work at a recent club member meeting. Asked how she learned to do such intricate work, she said, “We are one big workshop family, everyone is so helpful.’’
Tim Emerson, the current president of the Sawdust Club, displays one of his patriotic plaques.
Laura Sievers is the club secretary. She just recently remodeled her entire home through the use of the tool loan program.
The Retired Flags box was a team project that has proved to serve our TGO community very well.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors
TGO Quilters group donated a large amount of school supplies to Barbara Kurtz’ initiative at their Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at Sonny’s BarBQ on December 10. They had a wonderful time, and David Seale won the Ugliest Sweater contest. Thanks to Sonny’s staff, who graciously served a wonderful lunch.
In October 2023, The Florida Pickleball Leagues initiated innovative team-based leagues at all levels and age groups to compete with other teams throughout the state. Titusville put a team together, the “Ville Pickles,” and advanced to the championships/playoffs on January 7, 2024. Three TGO residents were on the team: Charlie Wood, Tony Gonzales, and Pasquale Nadon. Pasquale also served as Team Captain. The Ville Pickles took home the gold medal winning the Open Age, Men’s Division, 3.5 Level.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors The TGO Mad Hatters are Looking for New Members
Kathy Shulby celebrated her 29th birthday (again) at the Blue Heron with a great group of friends.
The TGO Mad Hatters was established around 2006 as a group for women living or renting in The Great Outdoors to meet each other and learn about the area we are in. We are passionate about fun, friendship and activity; finding entertaining ways to encourage relationships that last a lifetime. Currently we have 170 members, every month between 60-100 of us gather in the TGO Manor for lunch and a speaker presentation. Every season is filled with tons of activities around Titusville and the Space Coast. Each year our events include several trips to the Titusville Playhouse, museums, boat rides, garden tours and an annual lunch at the Titusville High School in support of their Culinary Arts Program. Although we often raise money for various Titusville charities, our main objective is just to have fun and experience fellowship Bi-annually, The Mad Hatters host a ladies tea in the Manor. We open this party to all women at TGO and their friends, you don’t need to be a member to participate. Purchase a ticket from Susan Bonneau at madhatlunch@gmail.com. This year we will sell raffle tickets to win a beautiful quilt with proceeds going to the Titusville Women’s Center. We will also have local vendors, mostly from TGO. We are very excited to continue this tradition by hosting a special “Galentine” luncheon for women to spend a couple hours relaxing with each other. See our ad in the “Upcoming Events” section of the Happenings for more information. (Page 75) Membership dues are only $10 and requests for information can be sent to Flo Kleine at mhmembershipflo@yahoo.com. - Jan Elzey -

Welcome to the New Age of Stretch!
Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion. For a FREE 30 minute session, please give us a call: Stretch Zone in Titusville: 321- 567 4085 1542 Harrison Street, Titusville, FL 32780 Email: titusville@stretchzone.com www.stretchzone.com

What Is A Firebreak?
By Ed Brown
It could be the very thing that saves your property and your life when a Wildfire is relentlessly advancing on TGO. It can be man-made or natural. The St. John’s River, running from south to north, qualifies as a natural firebreak for a wildfire rushing through the grasslands and forest west of the river and west of TGO. In a similar way, the Addison Canal, running west to east, through part of TGO, could qualify as a man-made firebreak. It was dug 100 years ago in an ill-fated attempt to drain the “swamp.” Both these firebreaks could conceivably work together to protect the north and west sides of our community. I-95 would serve as a well-traveled Firebreak protecting TGO from a wildland fire charging west out of Windover Farms. SR-50 has historically protected TGO from wildfires driven south by a strong north wind. Sounds good, but where these firebreaks are bordered by Palms, Palmettos or tall pines, burning embers can be transported by strong winds right into TGO. Vines, like the potato vine, can provide a route upward for a ground fire to gain access to tall Pines and roof lines. Ground fires become “CROWN FIRES.” That’s SCARY! Still, FIREBREAKS can provide excellent protection from ground fires. But they must be maintained. Florida Forestry has funding for this purpose during February and March 2024 and will be using heavy equipment to clear and maintain FIREBREAKS west of the TGO Library and east of the Golf Cart Nature Trail. This is exciting news for our residents who can help maintain their property as Lean, Clean and Green! I would recommend getting a paper road map (remember them?). Label the borders of TGO (North Side, West Side, South Side and East Side). Locate your home as best you can on the map. Now you can better plan for mitigation of or evacuation from a potential TGO Wildfire. If all this thinking and planning sounds like too much work for you, I say “Good Luck!” If this is too scary or too upsetting for you, sell your property and get out because Wildfires are a very real hazard for the next six months. Be a proud and prepared resident of The Great Outdoors.

Funny Thing Is… Having A Fit With Fitness I’m having a fit with fitness. I mean the term “fitness.” What is it actually saying about us? Fit into what? Fit in our clothes? Fit in our cars? Fit in the airline seat? As we close out another holiday season and start with the ritual of making New Year’s Resolutions, for many of us our attention turns to shedding the pounds we have spent the last month and a half accumulating. Yes, since Thanksgiving it’s been a nonstop eating and drinking fest and now instead of looking like Jack Lalanne (not going to use Richard Simmons here) we instead look like one of those Weebles that when you push it over it bounces back up. Our waistlines look more like waste lines. Yes, it’s time to pay for all your merriment. Pay being the operative word. You can’t do it on your own so maybe a gym membership is good idea. Or you can PAY for Slimfast or Weightwatchers. Just the amount of cash you’re removing from your wallets will slim you down by a couple of inches and that’s a good start, right? So why are we working so hard to get fit? When I find my clothes are tight I just buy bigger clothes. If I can’t get into my car, I just buy a bigger car. If I can’t get into my airline seat, I just…well I just don’t fly. So how can I fit fitness into my life because it’s giving me fits? First, I’m trying resistance training by resisting to give up pizza, burgers and beer. Second, I’ve decided the only six pack I’ll have will not be in my waist but in my fridge and it will say Michelob Ultra on the side. Third, the only bars I’ll be pressing will be the ones that overcharge for drinks. In other words, I’m not going to spend hours at the gym, or hundreds of dollars on big name diet programs. All I need to look good to my friends is to pour them the contents of a $14.99 bottle of Jose Cuervo Tequila! Now I’m looking good and that’s a plan that “fits” into my lifestyle. Dr. Sammy

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
I used to think I was too old to serve my country. I found out I was wrong. If you are looking for some adventure in your life, consider joining the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Wherever your interests lie and whatever life skills you have, chances are that the Coast Guard Auxiliary can offer you an area to serve that will enrich your life in ways you may not have imagined. We conduct safety patrols on local waterways, assist the Coast Guard with homeland security duties, teach boating safety classes, conduct free vessel safety checks for the public, assist in duty station for the Space Launch program as well as many other activities. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component for the United States Coast Guard. The Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions except military and law enforcement actions. For more information, please contact Peter Maselli 714 392-4444 Or Nicholas Faraco 860-748-1871. We both are here at TGO.
Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes
Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign. Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Traffic Citation for failure to obey a posted traffic sign.
Ron Peoples, Karl Kynoch and Ken Birtwistle took advantage of the break in the weather to refresh the trail signs. Thank you, gentlemen, for your volunteer services.
