Please refer to your emails and attend this meeting or provide a Proxy.
The Fight Against ALS - Meet Debbie Grondin/TEAM TGO ALS
Many of us may have encountered or known someone affected by ALS, a devastating disease currently without a cure. Fortunately, there’s a national association dedicated to combating ALS, providing both support and actively working towards finding that cure. Leading the charge locally is Debbie Grondin and TEAM TGO ALS, a remarkable group that deserves our collective support. The 6th Annual TGO ALS Walk is scheduled for Saturday, February 24, and it promises to be another fun gathering for our community and successful fundraiser for the ALS Association. For all the details please view page 22.

Dear TGO Community, Today is Groundhog Day, and I’m hoping that Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow today so we get some warm weather soon. This winter has been colder, darker and wetter than previous years, and these conditions have not been kind to our grass. We are seeing “brown patch fungus” affecting some of the lawns in our community. This fungus causes some browning and yellowing of the grass blades. The good news is the fungus only affects the grass blades and doesn’t damage the root structure, and when the weather warms up and grass comes out of dormancy, our lawns will bounce back and green-up again. For now, we are trying to get the turf dried out, so we are limiting irrigation. Please contact the CSA office if you have questions about your turf or you wish to have TruGreen assess your lawn on their next visit. Please help me welcome and congratulate those elected to serve on the Board of TGO. Our returning champions are Lauren Clark (District 4) and Matt Willey (District 6). I welcome our newest CSA board members Ron Wagner (District 0), Dan Barnes (District 2) and Terry Manchik (District 8). Finally, I send a BIG thank you to our outgoing board members Bruce Hayes, Bernie Hatch and Barbara Yeager, for their service and dedication to keeping TGO Great. We will recognize these volunteers and thank them at the Annual Members Meeting next week, at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, February 7. Join us or send in your proxy! Your TGO home is safer from wildfire today, because last week we practiced how we will quickly respond when wildfire is threatening our community. TGO held a Wildfire Emergency Evacuation Drill on Friday, January 25 with leaders from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Brevard County Fire & Rescue. This drill was a test of our communication and cooperation with these agencies. Approximately 20 volunteers from our Firewise Committee and Courtesy Patrol team were on hand to participate and offer feedback. You will find a picture of this drill on page 50 of The Happenings. The CSA Safety Committee will host our 5th, yes 5th annual complimentary Shred Day for TGO residents on Thursday, March 14 from 1 to 3:00 pm in the parking lot north of The Manor. This is a drive-through event, and safety committee volunteers will be on hand to assist you with boxes. More information and directions are available at the CSA office. Great specials are happening at our restaurant. Blue Heron is now featuring some themed dinner nights. I hope you are hungry for Taco Tuesdays, Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays. The Blue Heron team is also gearing up for a Super Bowl watch party on Sunday, February 11, with $1 wings and beer specials. Finally, Musa and the team are planning a Valentine’s couples special on February 14, with an upscale menu and some nice Valentine’s Day touches for your special someone. TGO loves our wildlife, and a new and exciting preservation project is now in development in Brevard County. You’re invited to attend a presentation from Brevard Zoo on Wednesday, February 21 at 2:00 pm in The Manor. Keith Winsten, Chief Executive Officer, will be here to share updates about Brevard Zoo, a local gem located just 30 minutes south of The Great Outdoors. You’ll hear about the growth of the Zoo as they celebrate their 30th anniversary, with plans now to build a second campus at He says he’s Port Canaveral - a world-class, 14-acre Aquarium and Conservation Center on the banks moving to Florida! of the Banana River that will be transformational for our region. This presentation will take place before our regularly scheduled CSA Board meeting at 3:00 pm. Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

MGA President’s Cup, 2024 - Final Update Congratulations to “D” Flight Champion Scotty Lewis who wins the 2024 MGA President’s Cup!! Mr. Lewis defeated “D” Flight Champion Mike Pascuzzo 3 and 1 in the final match! Congratulations to both players for a great tourney! In the front nine semi-final matches, Mr. Lewis and “A” Flight Champion Steve Wright were all square, but Scotty won the #3 “tie breaker” to advance to the finals. The other semi final match was also very close with Mr. Pascuzzo and “B” Flight champion Rodger Daughtery also ending “all square,” with Mike winning the #3 tie breaker. Many thanks to everyone who followed the final matches! We had a nice contingent watching on the course! Special thanks to my Board colleagues, Bill Schueller and Bobby Ward, who assisted me with the officiating of the final matches. REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES! Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited What is Sulfation?
Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge. Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.
We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process! • Increase Your Battery Life-Span • Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries • Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition • Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries • We provide you a detailed health report for each battery

The TGO Community Wide Yard Sale Is On March 2 This is the day we all wait for - The Park Wide Yard Sale!
The day TGO becomes a bargain paradise. A great time to get rid of all that stuff tucked away in the corners of your closets and garages. A good time to practice your negotiation skills. A fun way to cruise around the park with a cup of coffee (or?) and visit with your friends, scrambling from street to street looking for that special piece of junk you’ll most likely put out in next year’s sale. Have Fun... Drive Safe! The chaos starts at 8:00 am.
Shred Day-March 14 Mark Your Calendars!
The Annual Shred At TGO. Here Are The Details You Need To Know 1 Shred Day will take place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday, March 14, 2024 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. 2 We have a rain day set for Friday, March 15, 2024, if we have to cancel the 14th due to weather. 3 If people have old TGO Directories they would like to dispose of, please drop them off at the CSA Office before March 8, 2024 so we can prepare them for shredding. 4 No Early Drop-Offs! All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00 pm and must be dropped off before 2:50 pm. 5 Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring file folders, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc. If materials are not ready-to-shred, the resident will be asked to step out of line, prepare their materials, and return with material that is suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Cindy Marini via email at clmarini@aol.com or phone 440-829-8633.

Community Information & Notices CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. Please do not allow pets to • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. urinate on trash or debris. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. The crew has to pick this up! • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)
Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Debbie Grondin’s Fight Against ALS What Exactly is ALS? Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It usually strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and approximately 20,000 people in the U.S. have the disease at any given time. ALS affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. At this time ALS has no known cure. Enter Debbie Grondin and TEAM TGO Debbie Grondin is a familiar face here at TGO - especially if you’re familiar with her fight against ALS. This will be her sixth year to host the TEAM TGO ALS Walk - with the single goal of raising money to help fight this disease. This is personal for her. “My brother got it at 54 and lived four and a half years, but it wasn’t until the last six months that they diagnosed him with ALS. We watched him lose his ability to speak, to sing, to laugh, to run, to walk, to move, and to breathe. This is a horrible disease - which anyone of us can get, especially in our age bracket. A cause we all need to support. “Some people get diagnosed and are gone in six months, some people live for 20 years, but the average is two to five years. It’s not an easy disease to live with,” explained Debbie. “I pray that one day there is a cure.” How do you know you have the disease? “Different people have different symptoms. My brother started slurring his words, which is known as Bulbar-onset ALS. Bulbar-onset ALS generally starts with symptoms like slurred speech, difficulty chewing and swallowing, excessive choking and weakness or twitching in the muscles of the face, jaw, throat, and voice box, particularly the tongue. Signs that these symptoms may be occurring include difficulty forming words, poor articulation and changes in voice or speech patterns, including a harsh, hoarse or strained voice, and decrease in range or loudness of voice. Some people start falling down or get a tingling in their legs. Some get weakness in their arms. It affects everyone differently.”
22
The ALS Association is a nationwide program. Debbie’s efforts are associated with the Orlando chapter. The money raised doesn’t just go to cure the disease but it goes to help people who have the disease to have a better quality of life. The money can provide wheelchairs, help with finding doctors, provide exercise programs and more. “This will be our sixth year doing this for TEAM TGO, explained Debbie. Last year we raised $7,000 and we got a bonus of $1,500 because someone said that whoever raised the most money in a designated week would get a bonus, and we got it, so with that we raised $8,500. Our goal this year is to hopefully raise over $10,000.” This may be a horrible disease, but Debbie, with the help of her husband, Dennis, and her sister, Cheryl Albert, along with a long list of supporters and very dear friends, put on an event that is fun for all participants. “There are raffles for nearly 70 gifts well worth over $5,000 provided by individuals and the sponsors. Longhorn Steakhouse provided 150 appetizer/dessert coupons. There will be hand-made quilts, jewelry, paintings, wreaths, gift baskets, flower arrangements, woodcraft items, and lots of gift certificates from our local businesses. A lot of people and companies have really contributed this year. “Megan Gunter, our ALS Orlando Walk representative, comes from Orlando to support our walk, and brings lots of ALS information. “The day of the walk starts early. It takes many hands to get set up. We haul up the tables, set up the sound system, put banners in place, display the raffle gifts, check in the walkers, accept donations, sell raffle tickets, etc.” The morning starts out with an outdoor Zumba warm up, led by Melanie Matz to get everyone ready for the walk. The TGO Clown Alley will also be there to entertain.
Then there is the TEAM TGO ALS walk around Hidden Lakes. There will be a water and snack station set up along the course. It’s a fun time to grab a friend or a group of friends and enjoy the morning. It’s also a great route to walk your dog. “It really takes a village of friends, families and participants to make this event a success. I would like to give a
heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped or offered help in all the past and present ALS walks. Thank you to all the very generous donors of the beautiful handmade raffle gifts and the donated services from business inside and outside TGO in the form of gift cards and gift certificates. Also, I am so grateful for donations to the ALS Association.”

You can sign up for one or more months and do the work on your own schedule. We don’t expect these tasks to take very long - maybe once or twice a month. The three general areas are weeding around the building, gathering downed palm fronds, and cleaning the outside decks and picnic tables. Just call and let us know what month you would like to help and your choice of tasks. We especially can use “guy” help with the weed whacking and using the pole saw to edge the bushes along the nature center property Call Ron Peoples at 407-509-0486 or email to: ebnflo2001@yahoo.com to learn more and to sign up. February 28, 2024 Native, Exotic or Invasive?
Tim Graham of TGO NatureScape. The pretty flower in the picture has cost Florida taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars to control over the past century. Florida’s climate is so hospitable, invasive species cause more of a crisis here than anywhere else in the continental United States. The fact that Florida serves as a point of entry for almost three-fourths of all plants imported into the U.S., compounds the problem. We will explore the challenges on a local level to understand how these invasive plants affect Florida and TGO.

FREE Introductory Stretch Session For TGO Residents
Welcome to the New Age of Stretch!
Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion. For a FREE 30 minute session, please give us a call: Stretch Zone in Titusville: 321- 567 4085 1542 Harrison Street, Titusville, FL 32780 Email: titusville@stretchzone.com www.stretchzone.com

TGO Wildfire Emergency Evacuation Exercise
Each year as part of the TGO FirewiseUSA program, CSA conducts a Wildfire Emergency Evacuation Exercise, to test the emergency response of the TGO Firewise Committee, CSA Staff and local emergency responders during a wildfire threat. Since it would be impractical to have TGO actually evacuated, this exercise simulates a wildfire emergency and TGO staff, CSA Courtesy Patrol and Firewise Committee members are dispatched to locations around the community to determine how the flow of evacuating traffic will need to be controlled. During this exercise, there was not any actual community Front row, from left to right, Lieutenant Seigel with Brevard County Sheriff Office, Commander Carlos Reyes with BCSO, Chief Jackson Lively with Brevard County Fire & Rescue, Butch Jones, Chairman of Firewise Committee, involvement, so it did not and Billy Specht, CSA Community Manager. Included in this photo are members of our Firewise Committee, and disrupt any of the daily Courtesy Patrol officers who participated in our Emergency Wildfire Evacuation Exercise. activities.

The Art And Science Of PRESCRIBED FIRE
By Ed Brown
Many terms have been used to define the art and science of prescribed fire. For us living in TGO, the best label is “A Prescribed Burn.” A prescription usually starts from a doctor and medical staff. For residents of the grasslands and forested areas of The St. Johns River, that staff would be the scientists and wildlife technicians of The Florida Forestry Service and The St. Johns River Wildlife Management Area. Historically this area was ocean bottom and reefs. Then it got elevated. It got soil and seeds and plants and wildlife, streams, lakes and swamps. Fires started by lightning, burned off the vegetation, created ash that fertilized the soil and released seeds for new growth. Then, after millions of years of natural evolution, human beings immigrated into the grasslands and forests of what we now call Florida. They brought development. Now there is TGO, cities and all the creations of the modern world. There is still fire and it is often inconvenient, dangerous and costly. In order to keep Florida vegetation trimmed down to make wildfires less destructive and less costly, the concept of PRESCRIBED FIRE was adopted. The “prescription” targets a specific area. Limits of the area are established, keeping Firebreaks, (natural or man-made) in mind and weather conducive to a successful burn is strongly factored in and monitored. Smoke annoyance of the public is minimized! 1. Winds should be light to moderate and predictable for a burn. 2. Humidity should be low and vegetation dry. 3. Access to the burn area is confirmed and occupants are notified to leave. 4. Emergency exit of the burn area is also confirmed. 5. The burn is started on the upwind side of the vegetation in a number of ways. 6. Burn speed is controlled by water application, “fire brooms,” shovels, heavy equipment and fire breaks to “steer” the burn. 7. Black smoke spirals upward and down wind. 8. A fire break is used with water application to slow and stop burn progress. 9. Weather is monitored throughout to assure control. 10. Small spot fires on the perimeter are extinguished to assure no rekindle. 11. The Prescribed Fire is out and secured. Prescribed Fire is an excellent Wildland Management tool. It actually makes wildlands more productive by releasing seeds, fertilizing the soil and improving habitat for the wild critters and you and me. When you see towering black clouds of smoke rising from the St. Johns River flood plain or from Merritt Island, you are witnessing good Wildland Management. Then check Local News and Weather to be sure.

Funny Thing Is… A Violent Game Called Bingo! BINGO seems like such a harmless word. Some people name their cute little dogs Bingo. Some people say it to mean “exactly right” or “you hit the nail on the head.” These are such nice, positive things associated with the name “BINGO.” You don’t hear of many crime family hitmen named Bingo, do you? How many prize fighters, football stars or heavy equipment operators do you know named Bingo? None, right? Butch or Rocky maybe but never Bingo. So, how come the game called Bingo can be so hazardous to your health and reputation, especially if you’re very lucky. It’s just a game, right? Those are always fun. These game are usually held at nice, safe places like a church or sometimes Fraternal organizations. People that play Bingo walk in the door as some of the nicest, sweetest people you ever want to meet. Even the equipment they use sounds harmless. Their weapon (marker) is called a dauber. Other items used in this sweet game are ping pong balls and little cards that look like a tic-tac- toe game on steroids. C’mon now. What could possibly happen? When the game begins a miracle happens. Two hundred people go totally silent. It’s like someone hit the mute button on the TV. No talking, coughing, sneezing, stomach growling, or loud exhaling. The only sound allowed is the one person who’s playing with the ping pong balls which keep popping out of what looks like grandma’s vacuum cleaner in reverse. The only special skill you need for this game is to be able to pay attention and hold your breath for 10 minutes at a time. Everything moves along just fine until somebody says that special, otherwise harmless word, BINGO. OMG! The place erupts with anger, nastiness, irate people making comments about you who were just smiling and saying hello minutes earlier. You suddenly find yourself dodging verbal daggers, then you are quickly visited by someone who looks like a security guard in real life who rips the card from your hand and reads out the numbers. And, if you got one number wrong. you will need a police escort to get out of the place. Fear not. The noise only lasts until the caller says “next game.” Ah, silence again. And, if you win again, should you say that word? Bingo! Good luck. Dr. Sammy
