Annual Members Meeting - Now Scheduled for February 21, 1:00 pm in the Manor

It was a short two week delay, but the TGO Annual Members Meeting is just five days away. Required by our governing documents we need a quorum consisting of at least 30% of the owners either physically present or having provided a properly completed proxy. If you cannot attend the meeting in person, the proxy designates another person of your choosing to cast your vote on items that may be voted upon at the meeting. Please refer to your emails and attend this meeting or provide a Proxy.

Meet Jo-Anne Buckley

You’ve probably seen Jo-Anne riding her bike around the park - which she does religiously every morning, or if you are a bowler, then you know she is in charge of our TGO Bowling League. But did you know she is also our official Librarian? When not peddeling around TGO or slinging her 10 pound bowling ball down at River Lanes, you’ll find Jo-Anne busy in our library organizing the books, removing the duplicates and making sure the puzzles and games are back in their boxes. Dear TGO Community, This is the last issue of The Happenings before our rescheduled Annual Members Meeting, to be held next Wednesday, February 21 at 1:00 pm in The Manor. This meeting is our very own ‘TGO State of the Union’ address. You will hear about our 2023 community accomplishments, and you will get an update on our budget and future plans to keep TGO great for many years to come. Please attend or tune in on Chanel 732. If you cannot be there in person, please submit a proxy. Seating is first-come, first served, and you will need to present an ID to prove you’re an owner before being admitted. Our keynote speaker is Keith Winston, Chief Executive Director of Brevard Zoo - see page 34. He is an engaging speaker who will share a message about wildlife conservation in our region, and talk about some exiting future plans in Brevard County to expand the zoo’s mission. Lots of ground work (no pun intended) is happening now to prepare for the golf course renovation project. Yes, the final countdown has begun… the renovation begins in just short nine weeks on April 15. You will notice “brown out” conditions on the golf course now in the areas surrounding the tees and greens. This is the result of a “spray-out” application to kill the grass in these areas in order to prevent foreign grasses and weeds from infiltrating the new grasses that will be growing in over the summer. As CSA manager, I’m constantly hearing and sharing good news and bad news, so let me share some good news first, then some bad news: The good news is TGO has once again earned the prestigious and coveted Good Sam 10/10*/10 rating! Less than 1% of RV parks and campgrounds in the United States receive this annual rating. This rating is awarded based on three categories: excellent conditions of our restrooms and showers, our overall environment and amenities, and the visual appearance of the community. Dozens of criteria are ranked in these three major categories. RVing is what brought most of our owners here in the first place, so you should all be proud to live and own property in a top-rated RV community. Now onto the bad news… Tim and Cindy Clark have decided to step down from being the editors of The Happenings bi-monthly newsletter. This is good news for them, because they are excited to pursue the next phase of their retirement, but this is bad news for CSA as we’ve come to rely on their wonderful Happenings work, their clean layouts, great photography and some terrific editorial writing. They will continue to publish The Happenings through the last issue of March. We are now searching for a replacement editor so Tim and Cindy can offer some continuity training before our first issue in April is due. The position of “The Happenings Editor” is now posted on our website job board (tgocsa.org). If you know anyone with the talent and time needed to perform this work, please have them contact me directly at 321-268-9767 or by email at manager@tgocsa.org. Most importantly, please help me thank Tim and Cindy for over two years of hard work, creativity and dedication with The Happenings. Last week we had a wonderful Community Safety presentation by Sheriff Wayne Ivey. As a follow-up to this event, we are creating a list of TGO owners who are interested in participating in a Brevard Sheriff’s Citizens Academy to be held here at TGO in the fall 2024. Also part of the Board of Directors Organization are CSA Manager Billy Specht, Architectural Review Committee Chairman Leon LeBlanc and CSA Secretary Sharon Sanford. The CSA website at www.tgocsa.org has individual biographies and contact information for each director. Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards. The board meeting is televised LIVE on channel 732. CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the CSA Conference Room at 3:00 pm. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

CSA Patrol is Hiring

Patrol officers play an important roll in keeping TGO safe by enforcing traffic rules, and directing traffic during emergecies. If you would be interested in working for the CSA Patrol, go online to our website: www.tgocsa.org then click on CSA Documents/Forms/Application for Committee Assignment.

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting. In the PAVILION: Districts 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 - Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 10:00 am Districts 0, 1, 4, 7, 9 - Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 3:00 pm NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 10:00 am on the Manor Porch. The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on Monday, February 26, 2024. All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

Contractor Restrictions

Shred Day-March 14 Mark Your Calendars!

The Annual Shred At TGO. Here Are The Details You Need To Know 1 Shred Day will take place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday, March 14, 2024 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. 2 We have a rain day set for Friday, March 15, 2024, if we have to cancel the 14th due to weather. 3 If people have old TGO Directories they would like to dispose of, please drop them off at the CSA Office before March 8, 2024 so we can prepare them for shredding. 4 No Early Drop-Offs! All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00 pm and must be dropped off before 2:50 pm. 5 Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring file folders, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc. If materials are not ready-to-shred, the resident will be asked to step out of line, prepare their materials, and return with material that is suitable for shredding. Community Information & Notices CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or between dusk and dawn and move during the night to Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or different water sources. The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. Barcodes are $10 - new or replacement. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. The application dates for 2024: March 12 & 13, May 14 & 15 TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list. Service Call Dates are: February 22, March 28, April 11 & 25 TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Jo-Anne Buckley

Sounds familiar... “We are originally from Massachusetts, but moved to Florida in 1987 because we were tired of the winters.” I think Jo-Anne and her husband, Ken, have a lot in common with quite a few residents in TGO. “We were living in south Florida and were getting ready to retire. We had a motorhome and wanted to be in a motorhome community, as we were not able to have our motorhome where we were living because of HOA restrictions. We started looking about a year and a half before we retired. “The first two times we came here we left because we didn’t feel like we could afford it, but we didn’t get very far in. We went to a lot of communities that were manufactured home communities, but you couldn’t own the land, and that was important to us. The third time we came back we decided we needed to at least look at what was available here. We ended up buying the last lot on Pineridge Court, where we reside now. We built our house, which took about six months, and moved in February of 2001. That makes it about 23 years we have lived here. “Only the inner streets of Twin Lakes, Fairways and Lake, along with Plantation, Sunset and Greenwing were completed. It’s been exciting to watch TGO grow into what it is today.”

Before retirement, Jo-Anne was in nursing and Ken was a systems analyst. She likes to keep busy, so it wasn’t long before Jo-Anne became involved in the community. “I started volunteering at the library very soon after we got here. I’m the last of the library volunteers still working there. I enjoy it. I go by every day to put books away, pull out books that are duplicates and donate them, and get rid of the stuff that shouldn’t be there. I’m always looking for people to help file, weed out, box up and process the books that come in. We could also use some more shelves in the big game room for the puzzles. “My husband was our condo president for a few years and we hosted a lot of the condo socials.” When not volunteering her time as the TGO Librarian, you’ll find Jo-Anne either peddling her bike around the park or hanging out at River Lanes where she heads up our TGO Bowling League. “I have also walked or ridden my bike around our park almost every day since we first arrived here. It’s been a great way to meet people. I’ve put so many miles on my bike that I’ve had to have everything replaced on it. I ride about seven to eight miles everyday. “Prior to TGO, I bowled in a couple leagues for many years, a women’s league and a couples league. After living a couple of years here, I decided to start up again. I started as a single and then got my own team. Martha Verity and I were co-leaders for a bit. I’ve probably been in charge of our league for 18 years. We’re always looking for new people to bowl. This year we have 17 teams of four. Our largest year we had 24 teams. It’s a lot of fun. “The owners of the bowling alley in Titusville, River Lanes, have done a great job with it. They’ve expanded it over the years, refurbished the kitchen, the lanes, the pin setting equipment, the bathrooms. They always welcome our participation. “This will be my last season as president of our league. I think I have someone lined up to take over leadership of the bowling league, at least I hope so. I’ll keep bowling, but I want to step back from being the lead. It’s not that difficult to do, but there is a lot of organizing of the teams and interaction with the management of the bowling alley. It’s a social league and is a great way to meet people, have fun and try to improve your game. We are not sanctioned, we’re just out here to have fun.”.

October 1 through April 30 • Office Manager: Manage the scheduling of volunteers in the office and purchase/manage inventory. • Office Volunteers: Work in the office selling tickets and merchandise. You will need to be able to operate a cash register and assist with inventory. Advertising: Responsible for creating flyers and printing tickets for all activities events. Manage the billboards outside the Activities Office, Manor, and Post Office. Chairpersons of Events: We need people to chair/co-chair each of the events during the season. This includes the planning, set up (including decorations) and clean- up for the event. Tables/chairs are set up by CSA as requested by the chairperson.

Bingo:

Caller: Every Tuesday - or once a month. This is the person that calls the ball as they pop out of the machine and runs the bingo session. No computer experience needed. Needs to arrive by 4:00 pm, the balls start at 6:00 pm. This position is over when the last game is complete, and equipment is put away. Usually around 8/9:00pm. Training provided. Need to designate a time you can volunteer. Callers cannot play bingo the night they call. Sales: Sales are seated positions and have three parts - 1) ticket giver 2) money taker and 3) banker. In the summer, it can be just two people. Need to be there from 4:00 pm to 8/9:00 pm depending on the amount of people. Give out winnings after each game. Sales volunteers cannot play bingo the night they volunteer. Concessionaire: Oversees the cooking and selling of hot dogs, cashier, popcorn maker, ice cream (no scooping - Klondikes or Fatboys). Sell items during intermission and clean up the kitchen, putting sodas, candy, chips, etc. away. Need to be there before 4:00 pm to get set up and stay through intermission. Volunteers can play bingo the night they volunteer.

Concert Series:

Showcase Committee: Currently headed by Linda Utz. Need a person with some musical background to join the committee. Must attend two showcases in Boynton Beach, FL (November and December) to critique various entertainers. Will spend time on the computer researching acts, meet with the committee and select acts for TGO concerts. May be required to create flyers for upcoming concerts. Sponsorships: Person needed to contact businesses and ask them to sponsor our concerts. Need to prepare and distribute contracts, pick up checks, and prepare and distribute special sponsor tickets. Ushers: Arrive early for concerts. Checks tickets and helps direct people to their seats. Remain after the concert and be responsible for cleaning their area. Lighting and Sound Technicians: Looking for people with experience in these areas to support our existing crew. Board Members: The board makes decisions on all things related to Activities events. Positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Job descriptions are available for review. Voting occurs in March. All positions will be open next season.

The Enchanted Forest Sanctuary is the first property that was purchased by the Brevard County EEL Program. This 470-acre forest is part of a sanctuary network that the EEL Program is working to establish in the county. Learn about the numerous programs, hiking and other opportunities available to enjoy our Sanctuaries and Nature Centers.

February 28, 2024 Native, Exotic or Invasive?

Tim Graham of TGO NatureScape. The pretty flower in the picture has cost Florida taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars to control over the past century. Florida’s climate is so hospitable, invasive species cause more of a crisis here than anywhere else in the continental United States. The fact that Florida serves as a point of entry for almost three-fourths of all plants imported into the U.S., compounds the problem. We will explore the challenges on a local level to understand how these invasive plants affect Florida and TGO.

March 6, 2024 Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

Kim King-Wrenn, a ranger at the refuge will enlighten us on this unique and beautiful refuge that is literally in the shadow of the space program. It encompasses nearly 140,000 acres both outside and inside the secure areas of the Space Center and provides habitat for thousands of species of plants and animals. Many are endangered and some of them are found only in Florida. Join Ranger Kim King-Wrenn to learn more about visiting this unique place and how to see the beautiful plants and animals that make it their home.

TGO’s Gopher Tortoise Habitat Restoration Have you noticed the big changes taking place at TGO’s Protected Gopher Tortoise Habitat alongside the doggie walk cart path just north of Baytree Dr.? And would you like to help with the effort? The Importance of Gopher Tortoises: Gopher Tortoises are designated as a Threatened Species by the State of Florida. They dig long underground burrows where they live, and that provide refuge for many other species, too. Tortoise populations have declined dramatically throughout the State, primarily due to loss of their habitat. TGO is fortunate to have multiple areas in the community where Tortoises can be found. Restoration Goals: Tortoises like open areas with lots of sunshine and low-growing vegetation to eat. The Habitat had become densely covered by invasive Guinea Grass and other tall species that concealed the Tortoise burrows and shaded out their food supply. We are removing the undesirable and invasive plants, and will replant the area with beneficial species that will greatly improve the area for the Tortoises.

Progress So Far: We have cut back most of the undesirable vegetation, eliminated the accumulated debris on the ground, and enabled sunshine to reach the Tortoises at their burrows. Based on the increased activity we see there, THE TORTOISES LOVE IT! How You Can Help: It will require an ongoing effort to keep the undesirable invasive species under control. Additionally, we still need to plant the replacement species to improve the quality of the Habitat. Please consider volunteering your time and/or making a monetary donation for the purchase of plants, seed, tools, and other supplies. The next work day at the Habitat is Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 8:30 am. Celebrating Brevard Zoo’s 30th Anniversary

TGO loves our wildlife, and a new and exciting preservation project is now in development in Brevard County. You’re invited to attend a presentation from Brevard Zoo on Wednesday, February 21 at 2:00 pm in The Manor. Keith Winsten, Chief Executive Officer, will be here to share updates about Brevard Zoo, a local gem located just 30 minutes south of The Great Outdoors. You’ll hear about the growth of the Zoo as they celebrate their 30th anniversary, with plans now to build a second campus at Port Canaveral - a world-class, 14-acre Aquarium and Conservation Center on the banks of the Banana River that will be transformational for our region. The Brevard Zoo Aquarium Project is looking to expand the mission of Brevard Zoo and the East Coast Zoological Society by celebrating the biodiversity we have right here at home while focusing on animal well-being, conservation, and education. They will be able to expand the scope of waterway focused education programs currently based out of Brevard Zoo, making way for new programs and more students. Brevard Zoo is always looking for opportunities to get out in the public to talk about the new aquarium and all the wonderful work they do right here in our backyard (just ask for Zach or Emma)! Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

The TGO owners purchased the TGO Golf Course and, what is now the Blue Heron restaurant, ten years ago from Tom Saltsgiver. Tom was kind enough to spread the payments out over ten ten years with an interest free plan. On February 2, we celebrated the final payment to Tom at the beginning of the “Burn The Mortgage” golf tournament. There was a luncheon following the tournament where Tom received the actual payment.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey spoke last week to a packed house inside the Manor to share safety ideas for our TGO Community and bring us up to speed with some of the programs available from the Titusville Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff showed up with two of his favorite K9s, Junny and Boomer, and then spoke about how important their roles are within the department.

What Are Izzy Dolls?

These dolls originated in Canada. A young man named Mark Isfeld was a Master Corporal Canadian Military Engineer serving a second tour on a United Nations mission in Croatia. Mark was deeply impacted by the children’s horrendous conditions in Croatia. He talked with his mother, Carol Isfeld, about coming up with something small that a soldier could carry in the pockets of his uniform to hand out to the children impacted by the war. Carol created the Izzy Doll and her first package of 21 dolls arrived for the soldiers to disbribute in the early 1990’s. Unfortunately, Mark was killed by a land mine on June 21, 1994. After his death, fellow soldiers asked his mother if she could continue making dolls for them to distribute. They named the dolls “Izzy dolls” in his honor.

Carol Isfeld wanted to honor Mark’s memory and began a program with an army of volunteers to make the dolls. This program has sent over one million dolls to areas of war, natural disasters and poverty to provide comfort to children around the world. What started with only Carol Isfeld and some friends making dolls, quickly became something much larger as people across the world joined in. The knitting pattern can now be found online and volunteers everywhere make the dolls for distribution to children in traumatic situations. Our Friendly Hobbies group in TGO make the dolls to give to Chaplain Shelby Davis of the Titusville Police Department who give them to children involved in accidents, domestic violence situations, fires, etc. Another great project from our TGO community. Thank you ladies!

Bill and Janice Hilling, 94-year-old youngsters living at 202 Greenwing Trail, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on February 15. In today’s world it’s hard to find lasting love and dedication that stands the test of time. Their story proves that with true love it is possible. Janice and Bill met as teenagers, while Bill was pumping gas and serving ice cream at the local gas station. Bill loved Janice’s sense of humor. Janice was attracted to Bill’s smile and his kindhearted demeanor. Valentine’s Day Queen Meets Handsome Athlete and Avid Hunter! From there, it blossomed into a budding romance. After high school, Bill enlisted in the Air Force. He always believed in hard work and dedication to his country, just like so many of the men in his family. Missing the love of his life, Bill asked Janice to marry him. With her parents’ blessing, Janice boarded a train in Pennsylvania and traveled the long ride alone to Biloxi, Mississippi where Bill was stationed. Things didn’t work out quite the way they planned. When the 19-year-olds went to get their marriage license, they were denied. In the state of Mississippi, girls had to be 20 years old or have a note of permission from the parents. Bill was on a short 4-day pass, so that wouldn’t work.

After 75 years of marriage, Janice is as witty as ever. Bill is her biggest fan. Today, you’ll still find them deeply in love. It’s evident when they hold hands or when you catch them kissing and telling one another, “I love you” at least once a day. Bill still looks at Janice with the eyes of a teenage boy. He frequently compliments her, reminding her of her beauty. He once told me his goal was to spoil her and make her happy. That goal has been accomplished. Janice speaks highly of Bill and depends on him as her “Knight in shining armor.” In her thoughtful moments, you’ll catch her saying, “There is no one like Bill. I’m so blessed.”

Eager to begin their life together, they made the decision to travel to the next county seat by bus and instantly become 20 years old. Today, if asked, Bill will jokingly tell you he is married to his common-law wife.

Anyone having the pleasure of crossing paths with Bill or Janice, will walk away a better person. They will make you laugh or build you up. There’s no “putting on airs”… just honest, down-to-earth kindness.

Early in their married life, Bill owned and operated a Mobil Service Station. His knowledge of cars and parts eventually led him down the path to NAPA Auto Parts, taking an executive position that culminated as one of NAPA’s Vice Presidents. Following his career at NAPA, he purchased several NAPA Auto Parts stores, which he owned and operated until his retirement.

I know this all to be true. I have witnessed it all my life. They are my role models. Their love of the Lord and their love of family made my life one in which anyone would be envious. Happy 75th Anniversary, Mom and Dad! May the Lord continue to bless you with more years growing old together. May you continue to be young at heart. I love you so much.

Long before “Prescribed Fire” was analyzed and made into a modern scientific land management practice by scientists, indigenous peoples of the Earth had it figured out. If a tribe needed to clear land for agriculture, they burned it off first. If they wanted to establish a communal living area, they did the same. Trails and access routes were burned as well. Areas for buffalo grazing were mapped out and protected as pasture land close to home. Migration routes for grazing and water access for the herds were burned out. All this was accomplished with attention to wind direction and strength, moisture in the air and on the ground and seasonal variations in weather patterns. Fire was used as a tool that promoted ecological diversity and reduced the risk of catastrophic wildfires. This “cultural burning” ties into the tribal philosophy of “fire as medicine.” How do you suppose that indigenous populations all over the world developed “cultural burning” as a land management tool. These populations may not have been in contact with each other. Australian Bushmen were not sharing information with Comanchie tribes in the southwest U.S. There was no internet. Worldwide there was one teacher: It was NATURE. In areas where cloud to ground lightning was common, small, localized wildfires were kindled by lightning strikes. Rain often extinguished the wildfires that resulted. Natural firebreaks slowed them down or allowed them to burn out. Native inhabitants lived as part of nature. They didn’t miss the clues and they analyzed the results to make survival a bit easier. Ten years ago a cloud to ground lightning strike started a wildfire in TGO at 2:00 am. There was fire and black smoke in a grass and brush conservation area between Grande Haven and Oak Cove. There was no way that the ladder truck from nearby Brevard County Fire Station 24 could get to it, so the crew geared up, grabbed fire brooms and extinguishers and slogged through the black muck and brambles to extinguish the “blaze.” (“Always Ready; Proud To Serve”). Thanks guys! What native inhabitants would have learned from this was: 1. Fire can be a tool for land clearing and stimulating growth of desirable species, both plant and animal. 2. Small wildfires can be controlled. 3. Seeds released by the heat of the fire can start new growth and feed wildlife. 4. Ash, a product of burning, can enrich the soil. 5. Wildlife can move more easily through thinned out underbrush 6. Thinning the vegetation around a campsite or community reduces the chance of an enemy sneaking up for a surprise attack. Prescribed Fire has thankfully been with us for a long time! Be Firewise, Be Safe!

Funny Thing Is… Cold and Flu Season Makes Me Sick! I’m sick of dealing with the cold and flu season. Why do the docs keep saying I have a cold when I’m feeling hot? When I’m freezing they don’t say I’m having a “hot,” so why when I’m hot do they say I have a cold? And how come they tell me to use a vaporizer when I have a cold, which makes the air around me hot and that’s supposed to cool me down? I don’t get it. There are a lot of things I don’t get when it comes to colds. For instance, why do they pump you full of all this medicine to make you feel better, but when the side effects kick in you feel so much worse. It’s like paying the burglar to take your money. You pay big money for the meds, and then you feel WORSE? Well, yes the meds work to soothe the symptoms they are designed to help, but who wants to stop a runny nose at the risk of nausea and vomiting. You cured your top end but now everything south of your chest is at war with you. Hey, before I took those things my intestines and everything else down there were just fine. Well, we got a pill to fix that. Uh, wait a minute. Now you’re paying more money, for more meds to fix the new problem, but there are those pesky side effects of the new stuff. Hmm, it may cause headaches and sleeplessness. So now your head hurts, you can’t sleep, you’re still a little queasy from the previous bout of side effects and you did all this to stop a runny nose which, by the way, starts running again every four hours as the meds wear off. As if all this wasn’t enough, you have that little warning on every box of medication which says “do not drink alcohol while taking this product.” WHAT? That’s the only thing that actually makes me feel better! Case in point. If I have enough drinks, I may still have the symptoms, but don’t really care. Isn’t that kind of a cure? Also, it doesn’t make my digestive system revolt because I don’t eat when I’m drinking so it won’t kill the buzz that’s making me feel better. Finally, after I’ve had a few drinks I find getting to sleep is no problem. I’m not gonna talk about how I feel when I wake up because let’s just solve one problem at a time. Bottom line is, we have to find a way to get through January and February because the cold and flu season makes me sick. - Dr. Sammy -
