Meet Wally Thacker

You know the building well, in fact, it’s hard to miss. Looking east along any drive on Highway 1 through Titusville, you are bound to see NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). It is considered the largest single-story structure in the world. Built in the early 1960’s, it has been the home for every major rocket launch in this country. But there was a time when this sliver of an island was a marshy wasteland - pretty much uninhabited except for a few thousand gators, snakes and

TGO’s Volunteer Of The Year - Ron Peoples

Each year at the Annual Members Board Meeting, there is a moment we all wait for, and that is the announcement of the Volunteer Of The Year. We have had some great volunteers win this award - Donnette Hilton, Betty Salter, Jo-Anne Buckley, Vickie Ferrari, and Lorraine Murphy to name a few. This year another great name was added to that list, Ron Peoples. Ron is well known for his volunteer services with the Nature Center, the Sawdust Club and more recently, taking over restocking our fish for the 32 lakes in TGO. More about Ron on page 15.

Dear TGO Community,

We are at the peak of our busy season now and it’s wonderful seeing our community so active. Recent spring-like weather has everyone outside enjoying this season. As I look through this issue of The Happenings, I’m impressed with the wide range of activities going on inside TGO soon. Daylight Savings Time arrives next weekend, Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 am. We will all “Spring Forward” on this day, giving us even more evening daylight to enjoy The Great Outdoors.

One of the busiest locations in TGO is our Pickleball courts. We recently installed new LED lights on these courts to improve playing conditions into the evenings. Pickleball is so popular that we’ve added a calendar to our TGO website www.tgocsa.org called ‘Recreation Courts’ to coordinate the many different TGO groups who are organizing games. Pickleball is super popular outside our gates too, but our TGO courts are for private use by our residents and their guests, not for competitive leagues with outside players coming in for tournaments. Our Board is working on further defining our visitor rules in response to Pickleball’s popularity. TGO residents and owners will always be given priority use of our recreation courts, along with all of our other amenities. Any future competitive leagues who wish to reserve sports courts must be comprised of a home-team with all TGO residents.

Last week your Board of Directors unanimously approved our 2024 budget and our 2024 ARC Guidelines. The new ARC Guidelines more clearly reflect the exterior architectural standards of TGO homes going forward. You can review them on the TGO website at www.tgocsa.org or pick up a copy at the CSA office. There are some new rules added, old rules removed, and several rules restated for clarity. For example, some of the long-standing rules that are now clarified are: Fences are not allowed within TGO (Section 26.1), Parking on landscaping gravel is not allowed (Section 32.2.2), and RV skirting is prohibited (Section 42.2). Please remember that these ARC Guidelines are in place to maintain and grow our community property value. Your cooperation and adherence to these rules are needed to maintain the integrity of our community now and into the future. We are all in this together! The ARC Committee will strictly enforce these rules going forward.

Just a few weeks ago I was speaking at the Men’s Prayer Breakfast at TGO Community Church, and Bill Shaw asked me to remind our community that he hosts a donation program that contributes clothes to the area needy. It’s better to give reusable clothing to Bill rather than the Cocoa landfill. If you’re looking for him, you’ll find his name in the TGO Directory. He cannot handle large items such as mattresses or furniture, but clothing and bedding are always welcome.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards. The board meeting is televised LIVE on channel 732.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the CSA Conference Room at 3:00 pm. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

CSA Patrol is Hiring

Patrol officers play an important roll in keeping TGO safe by enforcing traffic rules, and directing traffic during emergecies. If you would be interested in working for the CSA Patrol, go online to our website: www.tgocsa.org then click on CSA Documents/Forms/Application for Committee Assignment.

District Meetings

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meeting wil l be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 10:00 am on the Manor Porch.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on Monday, March 18, 2024.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. Shred Day-March 14

Mark Your Calendars!

The Annual Shred At TGO. Here Are The Details You Need To Know

1 Shred Day will take place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday, March 14, 2024 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

2 We have a rain day set for Friday, March 15, 2024, if we have to cancel the 14th due to weather.

3 If people have old TGO Directories they would like to dispose of, please drop them off at the CSA Office before March 8, 2024 so we can prepare them for shredding.

4 No Early Drop-Offs! All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00 pm and must be dropped off before 2:50 pm.

5 Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring file folders, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc. If materials are not ready-to-shred, the resident will be asked to step out of line, prepare their materials, and return with material that is suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving.

There was a lot going on at our annual Members Board Meeting last week. It opened with a presentation by Keith Winsten, CEO of Brevard Zoo. He explained about some of the exciting programs the Zoo is involved with including plans for a world-class 14-acre Aquarium and Conservation Center to be built on the banks of the Banana River. He was joined by his staff and Jim Swan, an original supporter of the Brevard Zoo and the developer of The Great Outdoors.

The CSA Board recognized several key players who retired from the board... Bernard Hatch, Bruce Hayes and Barbara Yeager (not in attendance). And welcomed the new District Managers, Terry Manchick, Ron Wagner and Dan Barnes (not shown).

They saved the best until last - The highlight of the meeting was the recognition of Ron Peoples as the Volunteer of the year award. A well earned award. See page 15 for more about Ron.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 during regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes

Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign.

Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Tra c Citation for failure to obey a posted tra c sign.

Newcomer Orientation Meeting

Monday, March 11 is your last chance this season to attend Newcomer Orientation. We meet in the Manor from 11:30 until 12:30. Guest speakers from CSA, ARC, Courtesy Patrol, Nature, Golf, Activities and Firewise will share important information. Bring your questions.

2023 Volunteer Of The Year

At this year’s annual Members Board meeting, Ron Peoples was awarded the TGO Volunteer of the Year Award. Without question, Ron is definitely deserving of this award as his commitment to a variety of organizations within the park are instrumental to their success Ron and his wife, Dori, have been at TGO for seven years and are very active in the community. Originally from Massachusetts and eventually settling in Florida in 1959. Ron is the oldest of his brother and sister and the proud father of two girls and grandfather of two. Ron’s career provided a lot of travelling as he was a photojournalist for WESH2 and worked on their satellite uplink trucks until he retired in 2005.

Dori and Ron met in 2001 and were married in 2008, after dating for seven years, in Boot Key, Marathon, Florida, on Earth Day, and began enjoying the wonders of life and travel by land and sea. Their first adventures were by sea after purchasing a 36-foot trawler in 2005 and living on it full time for seven years. After experiencing the waterways, they decided to continue by highway and purchased an RV, and again, they lived in it full time for the next seven years.

Ron and Dori first learned about TGO when they came here to look at RVs and fell in love with the place and area. They rented for seven years (I can’t help but think seven might be a favorite number!) on Oak Cove and Coach Club before purchasing a home on Sunset then moving to Dragonfly. When it was time to stay put and sell their RV, it was back to the boating with the purchase of a pontoon boat - relaxation was in order. However, relaxing is not necessarily Ron’s “middle name,” so he became very active in volunteering in the community. Here is some of his volunteer work:

• Ron spends a lot of his time working with the Nature Center where he was previously the Board VP. He heads up the grounds maintenance including mowing, yard clean-up, takes care of repairs that are needed on either the building or the surroundings, and even hoists the new flag pole with the help of other volunteers. Dori has assisted with different aspects of the NC as well by working on the various sales and cleaning the center.

• Ron works with the fish release program that takes place twice a year and is necessary for the upkeep of our lakes and ponds. Dori keeps all the volunteers straight as to what pond/lake they are going to and how many fish they will need to distribute.

• The Sawdust Club is a large part of Ron’s life. He works tirelessly helping to maintain the club, and works on many community projects like making crosses for the residents for Easter. The club will do small projects for the community, especially when someone might not have the tools or skills to do what they need done.

• Ron is also very active on the Firewise Committee - attending meetings, working on issues to keep TGO and its residents prepared in the event of a fire emergency, and assists with efforts to clear brush, vines, etc. that are potentially fuel for a wildfire.

Ron enjoys keeping busy and finds there are so many different ways to do so here in TGO. The Great Outdoors is very fortunate to have such a “Friend of the Community.”

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. Barcodes are $10 - new or replacement. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

DID YOU KNOW...

Using poison to deal with a rodent problem creates a chain reaction of dead animals. When the rodent eats the poison it usually wanders off before it dies. Predators like eagles, hawks, bobcats etc. will eat the poisoned animal and they too will die from the poison. If the poisoned animal is dumped in the trash, it goes to the landfill and again it is likely eaten by the birds that visit the landfill such as bald eagles, gulls, and vultures. They will also die. If the poisoned rodent dies in your walls or under your building, the stench will be overwhelming!

Please bury dead animals that may be either diseased or were poisoned. Better yet, contact a reputable pest control company to trap and remove them.

Kim King-Wrenn, a ranger at the refuge will enlighten us on this unique and beautiful refuge that is literally in the shadow of the space program.

It encompasses nearly 140,000 acres both outside and inside the secure areas of the Space Center and provides habitat for thousands of species of plants and animals. Many are endangered and some of them are found only in Florida.

Help... The Activities Committee Needs You!

The Activities Committee has a great need for volunteers.

There are several areas on the committee that you are invited to join.

The Activities Office: Open Monday through Friday - 10:00 am to Noon. October 1 through April 30

• Office Manager: Manage the scheduling of volunteers in the office and purchase/manage inventory.

• Office Volunteers: Work in the office selling tickets and merchandise. You will need to be able to operate a cash register and assist with inventory.

Advertising: Responsible for creating flyers and printing tickets for all activities events. Manage the billboards outside the Activities Office, Manor, and Post Office.

Chairpersons of Events: We need people to chair/co-chair each of the events during the season. This includes the planning, set up (including decorations) and clean- up for the event. Tables/chairs are set up by CSA as requested by the chairperson.

Bingo:

Caller: Every Tuesday - or once a month. This is the person that calls the ball as they pop out of the machine and runs the bingo session. No computer experience needed. Needs to arrive by 4:00 pm, the balls start at 6:00 pm. This position is over when the last game is complete, and equipment is put away. Usually around 8/9:00pm. Training provided. Need to designate a time you can volunteer. Callers cannot play bingo the night they call.

Sales: Sales are seated positions and have three parts - 1) ticket giver 2) money taker and 3) banker. In the summer, it can be just two people. Need to be there from 4:00 pm to 8/9:00 pm depending on the amount of people. Give out winnings after each game. Sales volunteers cannot play bingo the night they volunteer.

Concessionaire: Oversees the cooking and selling of hot dogs, cashier, popcorn maker, ice cream (no scooping - Klondikes or Fatboys). Sell items during intermission and clean up the kitchen, putting sodas, candy, chips, etc. away. Need to be there before 4:00 pm to get set up and stay through intermission. Volunteers can play bingo the night they volunteer.

Concert Series:

Showcase Committee: Currently headed by Linda Utz. Need a person with some musical background to join the committee. Must attend two showcases in Boynton Beach, FL (November and December) to critique various entertainers. Will spend time on the computer researching acts, meet with the committee and select acts for TGO concerts. May be required to create flyers for upcoming concerts.

Sponsorships: Person needed to contact businesses and ask them to sponsor our concerts. Need to prepare and distribute contracts, pick up checks, and prepare and distribute special sponsor tickets.

Ushers: Arrive early for concerts. Checks tickets and helps direct people to their seats. Remain after the concert and be responsible for cleaning their area.

Lighting and Sound Technicians: Looking for people with experience in these areas to support our existing crew.

Board Members: The board makes decisions on all things related to Activities events. Positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Job descriptions are available for review. Voting occurs in March. All positions will be open next season.

The Men’s Breakfast Group of the Great Outdoors Community Church will hold its last meeting of the season on Saturday, March 16, 2024 in the Church Fellowship Hall at 8:00 am. Our speaker will be Philip Carlson, a leadership, safety and security expert in the corporate, public safety and criminal justice arenas. He is currently the Director of Global Security for a multi-billion-dollar, international company. He brings his own personal experience with a life altering injury which left him a quadriplegic, to show how the power of faith and prayer can transform lives.

Meet Wally Thacker

When the US Government decided to start launching rockets into space, Cape Canaveral was a clear choice for the location. It was ideally located. A marshy wasteland covered with reed beds, mangroves and only inhabited by gators, snakes and critters. A perfect location for a government project that appreciated its privacy.

J.B. Fraser and Sons, a company out of Fort Lauderdale, was hired to excavate the land, clear the mangroves and eventually bring in enough soil to cover an eight acre area, large enough to build a platform to support the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).

Enter Wally Thacker, a transplant from Kentucky, who in his younger years, helped engineer and excavate some of the most impressive projects along Florida’s coast, including breaking ground on the VAB. Wally spent over two years of his life helping make the VAB a reality and has enough stories to fill up this entire magazine.

Wally has been a resident of TGO for over twenty years, owning several different lots and homes along the way. He claims he has lived in Florida long enough, and has had enough sand in his shoes, to make him a native Floridian.

“I graduated in 1960 from Tri State College (now Trine University), in Angola, Indiana with a degree in civil engineering, and went to work with the B & O Railroad in West Virginia,” explained Wally. “I received a call from a gentleman from J.B. Frasier, he told me he was at the Cape and had been hired to do work on the site where rockets could be launched. He told me that his company was looking for a civil engineer who had just graduated and asked me to come interview for the job”

“When I got the job we had two bulldozers and two drag lines. We had to cut our way through all the mangroves to get to the VAB site. When we started, we just put the two bulldozers side by side and went through all this virgin land, making a way for our equipment to get to the site.

“The smaller equipment came over via Route 3, to Cocoa 520, past Travis Hardware in Cocoa. But at that time Route 3

was just a one lane road. Once we got everything on site, we started working. I had a field office about a quarter mile away from the site. I had a 12-14 man crew and we worked 24/7 for two years because our contract had a penalty clause that said we would pay $3,000 a day for every day we were late. We brought in deck hands and land crews from all over to help.

“When we first got to the site, the four corners were marked and we ended up taking out over 3,600 cubic yards of slop. We went down about 8-10 feet and put all the slop on the banks of the Banana Creek. We had to pipe it out about 1,000 yards so we wouldn’t block up the Banana Creek.

“We had to get down to a total depth of 60 feet and there couldn’t be any clay balls in the soil over the size of a baseball. If there were larger clay balls, they would create an unstable spot in the foundation. (Editor note: There were layers of clay soil under the original VAB site that had to be removed to help stabilize the foundation).

“At night we had to put six people on site to man the pipes and to pick up the clay balls and put them in burlap bags and truck them out. We had inspectors from the Corps of Engineers making sure the clay balls got bagged up.

“We had to go down 60 feet until we found good sand, good fill. We found dinosaur bones and all kinds of things. The archeological people came in and wanted to shut us down but the Corps of Engineers told them that this was a priority project.

“The site was probably about six square acres. Our initial dig only went down 25 feet because that’s all our equipment would do. My boss told me that we were going to have to design a way to get down to 60 feet. I went back to the Fort Lauderdale office and started working on a new design. We fabricated a cutter and flange and attached it to the ladder of the equipment and it worked really well and got us down another 18-20 feet. That’s where we started finding the dinosaur bones.

“We got down to about 40 feet and the sides started caving in and choking off our intake. We still had to get down another 20 feet, so I went back to the office and I figured if we fabricated a pipe just like the one we had, but made it 20 feet longer, and then put an outside pipe around it that would take water in from the top and take it down to the bottom and it wouldn’t choke it off. I got a big bonus for figuring this out. That worked and we got down another 20 feet. Then we really got to work! We were blasting so much stuff out and it all had to go somewhere. We had trucks coming and going all day and night taking out the uneeded soil.

“We not only did the site for the VAB but we also did the causeway all the way to launch pad 39A. After we finished there were trucks arriving for days filled with pilings to be used for the base structure of the VAB. There were enough pilings put under the VAB to go all the way to Maine.

“When we were done we had to get the equipment out. Using barges and tugboats, we decided to go across Banana Creek. It was really shallow but we didn’t know how shallow it was, so I said I would go check it out. I started wading out, we needed at least 5-6 feet, so once I saw that we could make it to the Intercoastal, we were good to move forward.

“I was curious what was on the other side of the Intercoastal, so I just dove down and swam across and crawled up on the other side - it was quite a ways. I met a man fishing on the Indian River who asked where I had come from. He thought my boat had tipped over or something. I told him I had come over from Banana Creek. He couldn’t believe it. He let me take a shower on his dock and I walked down Highway 1 until one of my crew found me.”

After two plus years working on the VAB project, Wally stayed on the Florida coast and worked on several significant projects.

“I did quite a few different jobs; some canal work in Pompano and land development around Vero Beach, I went to Fort Pierce and worked out of a field office, then went out to Bimini island in the Bahamas for a unique project to measure eight square miles of Aragonite which comes from the sea water. It looks like sand but has an oval grain and under the microscope it has three colors. It is mined in large volumes and is considered essential for the replication of reef conditions and promoting sea life.

“We were in a 40 foot Chris-Craft boat on the way over to Bimini when we got hit by a waterspout tornado, we were caught up in 30 foot waves. We didn’t know if we would make it - that was a pretty scary trip - all of us were sick as dogs!

“I also went out to Paradise Island, which was known as Hog Island back then, to help clear out the land for what is now the golf course around the Atlantis Hotel. We put in a lot of pipe and cleared out the channels so the water would flow properly. When we left, there was a pipe that had sat there for a long time with both ends under water. When we cleared it out, I bet there were a thousand lobsters that came flying out of it. People were filling up the trunks of their cars with them... it was a sight to see!

“I worked in the Keys on John Pennekamp State Park. At that time you could only get into Pennekamp through a narrow, four foot channel, and they wanted a bigger channel. We took our equipment in and out of the channel, making in deeper, longer and wider so it was more accessible. It eventually was a 1,000 foot channel, and all the deposits from the dredging created the islands you see around John Pennekamp.

“When we were finishing this job we were asked by the park ranger to pick up a statue and set it out on the reef. We put the statue on one of our barges and placed it on the underwater platform that had been prepared. This became the Christ of the Deep on the reef at Key Largo. The brass statue was from Italy and the park service had commissioned it to create a tourist attraction.”

Today, at 89, Wally shares his time between TGO and the Sterling Meadows Kennel in Virginia Beach that Wally and his wife, Bonnie, founded and is now managed by their children. 33

The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), situated within NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, FL, stands as an awe-inspiring testament to humanity’s ambition to explore the cosmos. • The total volume of the VAB is approximately 129,428,000 cubic feet (3,665,000 cubic meters).

• The VAB contains an immense amount of concrete. Around 65,000 cubic yards (49,685 cubic meters) of concrete were used in its construction .

• The VAB features four huge doors, each measuring 456 feet (139 meters) high, which are among the largest doors in the world. These doors are designed to allow the assembly of very tall spacecraft.

• A massive American flag on is painted on the building and is approximately 209 feet in height and 110 feet in width. Each of the stars on the flag is 6 feet across.

• The VAB is home to various bird species nesting in the building’s nooks and crannies.

• Due to Florida’s frequent thunderstorms, the VAB is equipped with a robust lightning protection system. It features lightning rods on its roof, along with a network of conductive materials to safely channel lightning strikes away from the building and its occupants.

• Beneath the VAB lies a network of underground tunnels used for transporting personnel, equipment, and even spacecraft components. These tunnels provide a convenient and secure means of access throughout the facility, shielding personnel and materials from the elements above.

• Here’s a fun fact... You could fit around 231,475 Volkswagen Beetles stacked next to and on top of each other inside the Vehicle Assembly Building.

• Approximately 10,785,665 people - if they hold their breath!

Wildfire Threat: Cigarette butts by the roadside By Ed Brown

Did you know that just off the roadside there is a micro-environment that is just waiting for a source of ignition. Warmed, in all seasons, by the heat-absorbing pavement and watered often by rainstorm run-off, it is home to a large population of plants and animals. Your only clues to the uniqueness and diversity of this roadside oasis are the displays of wildflowers that you see along the road on your travels. Think of this zone as a source of fuel for a wildfire!

A carelessly discarded cigarette can provide the source of ignition that torches off dried grasses, surrounding landscape and nearby homes. If you walk or bike our TGO roads, you surely have noticed the discarded cigarette buts. If you are a smoker, you may have inadvertently contributed to the potential SOURCE OF IGNITION of a WILDFIRE. Discarded cigarettes are responsible for many of these, NATIONWIDE. When you’re done with a smoke, make sure it is out, tear the paper and disperse the unburned tobacco (it won’t hurt the environment), roll the paper into a tiny ball between your fingers, discard it and pocket the filter for later trash disposal. If you are in a car, don’t flick the butt out the window. Put it in the ashtray. Don’t dump the contents of the ashtray in a parking lot. That would not be a classy thing to do!

A recent NFPA report states that 4 percent of home fire fatalities were the result of fires started outside the home. These fires can spread into concealed spaces throughout the structure before smoke reaches the smoke alarms.

Protect the fragile ecology of the road shoulder, as well as the greater integrity of our TGO community by disposing of smokes in a safe and Firewise way.

Funny Thing Is… “Happy Murphy Day”

It’s that time of year again where for one day we all become Irish, wear green, and drink way too much beer in honor of the great St. Patrick. There is also a lesser known March tradition known as Cinco De Marcho (March 5) where seasoned guzzlers begin a 12 day regimen of beer drinking in order to train their livers to handle the overflow on St. Paddy’s Day. Not joking, even though this IS a humor column. However, there is another great Irishman we should celebrate whose impact on the world has caused a lot more drinking than St. Patrick and his name is Murphy. That’s right, as in Murphy’s Law. We celebrate St. Patrick so how about a day dedicated to Murphy since his law seems to be in effect every other day of the year? Everyone thinks Murphy’s Law is, “If anything can go wrong, it will.” Not true. It became that, but the original Murphy’s Law reads: “If there are two or more ways to do something, and one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then someone will do it.” Now, THERE’S a reason to drink. There are a number of corollaries to this law, each of which would result in an even greater consumption of the suds. Murphy’s first corollary is: “Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.” Second corollary: “It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.” Then there is Murphy’s Constant which says: “Matter will be damaged in direct proportion to its value.” I’m thinking a six-pack isn’t enough to handle this. Additional corollaries include: “If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then,” and, “If nothing can go wrong, it will anyway.” Thanks to the Ultimate Murphy Collection for these words of wisdom. Finally, I once again request that if we’re going to dedicate a day in March to a great Irishman and in our dedication plan to drink way too much, I recommend we dedicate an additional day to the guy whose inescapable laws result in more beer consumption than Oktoberfest - Murphy.
