Meet Pamela Hearon Hodges

Pam, one of the many talented residents of TGO, specializes in writing Romance Novelsspecifically, Superromance Novels. Growing up in Paducah, Kentucky, a city known for its Southern values and hospitality, provided her with the inspiration for her characters and the backdrop for her riveting stories. Her fi nal publication, “Gaining Visibility,” clinched the National Readers’ Choice Award and was chosen as a Book Club Pick by Country Woman Magazine. While her journey to publication wasn’t swift, Pam’s persistence proved to be the key to her success as an accomplished writer. Read her story on page 32.

Another Great Weekend Of Shenanigans at TGO

Saturday, March 9 started out with the annual Happy St. Patrick’s Day Golf Tournament - sponsored by Ron Norris. It was a 4 person scramble with 144 entries The best score belonged to the Lucky Charms Flight that included John Blanchette, Jim McCarthy, Ron Wagner and Wayne Condra. There was also the Southern Classic Car Parade that cruised around TGO - led by Jerry the Ice Cream Man. Residents viewed the cars afterward and enjoyed some soft serve ice cream. The Nature Center also held their annual Spring Festival - showcasing several exhibits and offering a great barbeque lunch by Skinny’s Famous Barbeque. You’ll find photos throughout this issue.

St. Patrick Day’s Social - Saturday March 16

This might possibly be one of the best nights of the year - and hopefully, you already have your tickets! This year’s event is brought to you by Jimmy and Michelle Folse and will be starring Johnny Danger Live as the entertainment. It will be a night of rocking, rolling and dancing to your favorite tunes. Remember to bring the food and drinkshopefully enough to share with your friends and neighbors. Dear TGO Community,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Everyone! Next Tuesday, March 19 is the official first day of Spring, and this month we’ve been enjoying warmer weather, longer days and lots of sunshine. The Azaleas are blooming in front of the Manor, and inside there are many fun activities taking place, with even more events happening outdoors throughout TGO. Our golfers and leagues are enjoying their final tournaments and events this month, then soon our course shuts down for golf renovations on April 15.

I inspected the entire community this week and was pleased to see the condition of your yards. Turfgrass throughout TGO is green and healthy. The big majority of our owners are taking wonderful care of their landscaping beds. Our common area landscape beds are being cared for by Lucas Hapeman, our beautifications technician, and he is doing a noteworthy job. Soon, prompted by this week’s TruGreen fertilization, grass will grow faster, and in April we will increase our mowing frequency. Even with preventative spraying of herbicide, weeds will find a way to grow, so if you’re planning on departing TGO to travel north soon, please identify someone who will care for your property.

This Spring we are seeing a tremendous volume of bulk garbage thrown into our open-top dumpster. On three occasions recently, the dumpster was overfilled to the point where Waste Management would not haul it, causing further delays. This onsite dumpster is a convenience for you, but it’s not the only way to discard bulky items. I’ve sent email notices to remind owners about the Waste Management Transfer Station located just 2.8 miles away from TGO, at 4366 South St., Titusville. It is open from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Saturday for dumping, free of charge. If our dumpster is full, please wait until it is emptied, or better yet, haul it to the transfer station just a few miles away.

Greg Wostrel will replace Tim and Cindy Clark as our next Happenings Editor. You’ll find an introduction article about Greg in the next issue on March 29, but I’m sharing this good news now because I’m so pleased he will join our team. Greg’s first issue is the April 12 edition. He will assume the official email happenings@tgocsa.com next week. Please be patient with Greg as you send content, and respect our publishing deadlines. He is new to the job and working mostly offsite in Titusville, so he will need time to adjust to our community.

I have some follow-up news from Sheriff Wayne Ivey’s visit to TGO in February. Ladies, save the date for a workshop on Women’s Personal Safety to be held in The Manor on Monday, April 22 at 1:00 pm. More details will be shared soon, but I am putting the date out there for your planning purposes.

Our nation is getting politically charged again as we head into the next presidential election. Please help us keep TGO upscale, peaceful and special by adhering to our Political Sign policy. The policy states that political signs may only be displayed 30 days prior to Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 5 this year. Campaign signs may be no larger than 2’ by 3’ and only one sign per candidate is permitted on a unit. Campaign signs are permitted on your unit starting on Sunday, October 6, which is 30 days prior to election. Fines will be enforced for residents who ignore this sign policy. The CSA lawn crew, courtesy patrol and your neighbors will appreciate your adherence to this policy. It’s hard for our lawn crews to mow around so many signs, but for 30 days in October/November we will deal with it.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards. The board meeting is televised LIVE on channel 732.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the CSA Conference Room at 3:00 pm. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

CSA Patrol is Hiring

Patrol officers play an important roll in keeping TGO safe by enforcing traffic rules, and directing traffic during emergecies. If you would be interested in working for the CSA Patrol, go online to our website: www.tgocsa.org then click on CSA Documents/Forms/Application for Committee Assignment.

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes

Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign. Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Tra c Citation for failure to obey a posted tra c sign.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 during regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Definitions. The following terms used only in this rule shall be defined as follows:

a. “Night” means the period between one (1) hour after sunset to one (1) hour before sunrise as shown in media that covers this area.

b. “Overnight” means any six (6) consecutive hours during the Night that a Vehicle is not moved.

c. “Parking” means the standing of a Vehicle, whether occupied or not, other than temporarily for the purpose of and while actively engaged in loading or unloading property or passengers as may be permitted.

d. “Roadway” means that portion of an Association-maintained street that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, including concrete water runoff curbing where used.

e. “Vehicle” means all people-powered and motorized vehicles, including, without limitation, bicycles, tricycles, automobiles, trucks, RVs, golf carts, electric cars, motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds, Segways, contractor construction equipment, etc.

a. Illegal Parking. The following parking is illegal within TGO:

1) Overnight Parking either entirely or partially on the Roadway (exceptions may apply in Hidden Lakes and Addison Preserve).

2) Parking in the Rally Lot near the Welcome Center without prior authorization from TGO Realty.

3) Parking in a handicapped parking space without displaying a valid government-issued handicapped parking placard or Vehicle license plate.

4) Parking on any Roadway which interferes with, blocks, or restricts the flow of traffic of emergency or other Vehicles.

5) Parking of a utility trailer on a Roadway except for the temporary loading or unloading of same (exceptions may apply in individual homeowners’ or condominium associations).

6) Parking on any Parcel closer than five (5’) feet from the Roadway.

7) Parking any portion of a Vehicle on the grass of Common Properties.

b. Resident Overflow Parking.

Residents may use the parking lots in front of the CSA Office and in front of the Manor as overnight overflow parking upon registration with the CSA Office prior to parking. Vehicles that are prohibited from being operated on Roadways may not be parked in this lot unless stored in or upon a trailer. There will be a limited number of spots, a limited time allowance, and additional restrictions may apply.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. Barcodes are $10 - new or replacement. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. The application dates for 2024: May 14 & 15

TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary

The Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary is a 140 acre loop of scrub forest located on the Atlantic Costal Ridge in Rockledge and is home to the Florida scrub-jay.

Helen and Allan first came to Florida in 1937 for their honeymoon, and were astounded by the beauty of the flora and the birds found there. After they moved to Cocoa in 1952, they led the Christmas bird count for more than two decades.

As the official photographer for the National Audubon Society, Allan knew a great deal about birds. He taught bird lore, researched and wrote books and articles about birds with Helen, and served on the staff of Audubon for more than 35 years.

Cruickshank is par t of the sanctuary network established by the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program.

Famous for the place you can visit and have a scrub-jay perch on top of your head, visitors to Cruickshank can also hike the 1.1 mile trail on the western portion of the sanctuary. This trail winds through pine flatwoods habitat where raptors may be circling overhead or perched in high pine trees. Patches of oak, sand pine scrub, and freshwater depression marshes add to the Sanctuary’s diversity.

Help... The Activities Committee Needs You!

The Activities Committee has a great need for volunteers.

There are several areas on the committee that you are invited to join.

The Activities Office: Open Monday through Friday - 10:00 am to Noon. October 1 through April 30

• Office Manager: Manage the scheduling of volunteers in the office and purchase/manage inventory.

• Office Volunteers: Work in the office selling tickets and merchandise. You will need to be able to operate a cash register and assist with inventory.

Advertising: Responsible for creating flyers and printing tickets for all activities events. Manage the billboards outside the Activities Office, Manor, and Post Office.

Chairpersons of Events: We need people to chair/co-chair each of the events during the season. This includes the planning, set up (including decorations) and clean- up for the event. Tables/chairs are set up by CSA as requested by the chairperson.

Bingo:

Caller: Every Tuesday - or once a month. This is the person that calls the ball as they pop out of the machine and runs the bingo session. No computer experience needed. Needs to arrive by 4:00 pm, the balls start at 6:00 pm. This position is over when the last game is complete, and equipment is put away. Usually around 8/9:00pm. Training provided. Need to designate a time you can volunteer. Callers cannot play bingo the night they call.

Sales: Sales are seated positions and have three parts - 1) ticket giver 2) money taker and 3) banker. In the summer, it can be just two people. Need to be there from 4:00 pm to 8/9:00 pm depending on the amount of people. Give out winnings after each game. Sales volunteers cannot play bingo the night they volunteer.

Concessionaire: Oversees the cooking and selling of hot dogs, cashier, popcorn maker, ice cream (no scooping - Klondikes or Fatboys). Sell items during intermission and clean up the kitchen, putting sodas, candy, chips, etc. away. Need to be there before 4:00 pm to get set up and stay through intermission. Volunteers can play bingo the night they volunteer.

Concert Series:

Showcase Committee: Currently headed by Linda Utz. Need a person with some musical background to join the committee. Must attend two showcases in Boynton Beach, FL (November and December) to critique various entertainers. Will spend time on the computer researching acts, meet with the committee and select acts for TGO concerts. May be required to create flyers for upcoming concerts.

Sponsorships: Person needed to contact businesses and ask them to sponsor our concerts. Need to prepare and distribute contracts, pick up checks, and prepare and distribute special sponsor tickets.

Ushers: Arrive early for concerts. Checks tickets and helps direct people to their seats. Remain after the concert and be responsible for cleaning their area.

Lighting and Sound Technicians: Looking for people with experience in these areas to support our existing crew.

Board Members: The board makes decisions on all things related to Activities events. Positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Job descriptions are available for review. Voting occurs in March. All positions will be open next season.

Meet Pamela Hearon Hodges

It only takes a little effort to discover a wealth of information about Pamela Hearon Hodges. Her fame has grown from her talent in captivating the hearts of her devoted readers through her ten fictional romance novels.

Pam and her husband first arrived in TGO by following a similar path as many of us. After Dick retired, they traveled in their RV across the country, then Dick decided he wanted to find an RV resort style campground in Florida, and that’s when they discovered TGO. They had a reservation on Coach Club for about six week, “We just fell in love with it! Then, in February of 2012, we bought our house on Windsong,” explained Pam.

Before her writing career took off, Pam was a teacher in eighth grade language arts. “I taught for 30 years, and half of my life was spent with 13-year-olds.

Are you glad you’re not teaching now? “Well, I miss the kids but I don’t miss the work. There is an awful lot of work you do in teaching... planning, grading papers, prep, grading papers, and, did I say, grading papers?! I graded papers through basketball tournaments, on weekends, at night. That’s one thing I don’t miss. I always say if I could do it over I would have gone into PE.”

So how does one get published or decide to want to be published? Obviously you had been writing for a while. Have you always written romance? “No, I was writing fantasy and my real love was science fiction. We went on a trip to England, and I have been a real King Arthur fan since I was a child, so I dragged Dick all over England exploring Arthurian sites. I had this book called “Mysterious Britain” and it had all these Arthurian sites and I wanted to see them. We trekked all over Cornwall, we hiked across sheep fields to go to ancient burial sites, not your typical tourist stuff. Every place we went gave me more ideas. I had this story growing in my mind and every place we went added to the story. When we got back I told Dick that I had an idea for a book and I told him I was going to start writing it down. I sat down and started writing and six months later I had ‘The Timestone Key.’

“Dick told me he could sell anything, he was a furniture salesman, and he said he could sell my book. I came home from work one day and he said, “Hey, there’s an agent in the St. Louis yellow pages and I called him and he wants to see your book.”

Did the agent hook you up with a publisher? No, he kept my manuscript for a long time, months, and finally it came back with a note attached that said “Needs Work,” and that was it. At that point I thought I needed to learn about writing a book, so I started taking online classes, going to workshops in the summer, and I started learning the trade. I started entering contests, and got feedback from those contests. Then I started placing in contests. This was all with ‘The Timestone Key.’ I worked on that book for 12 years. I rewrote and rewrote for 12 years. I finally decided I needed to try something else and that’s when I joined Romance Writers of America just because they were available to any newbie.

“I started writing a romantic comedy. I got a critique partner and we jelled immediately. She was also an English major. From there, things started happening. I did finally find a publisher who wanted “The Timestone Key.” I was so excited! I had cards printed up - Pamela Hearon, Author of The Timestone Key, Triskillian Publishing.

“It wasn’t long before I received an email advising me that Triskillian Publishing has filed for bankruptcy. At that point I just didn’t do anything for a while. Triskillian had contracted the book, but had done nothing with it. Eventually, through some legal gymnastics, I got the rights to my book reverted back to me and two or three months later I sent it to another fairly new e-publisher, Lyrical Press. They bought it and scheduled it to come out in October of 2009. In March of 2010, another company, Wild Rose Press, bought the romantic comedy ‘His Hotness’ I had been working on, so after 12 years, I finally had two books come out within months of each other.”

A milestone in her career came when Cindy Morgan, a fellow romance writer and TGO resident, and Pam were on the beach one day. Pam told her she was so disappointed that her agent had not been able to sell her new straight romance book, Out of the Depths. Cindy asked Pam to tell her about the book and then she said it sounded like a Harlequin Superromance. (Superromance is a bigger book, about 80,000 words, subplots, things that a regular Harlequin romance doesn’t have).

“On the way home we stopped at Walmart and I bought a couple Superromances and went home to read them. After reading them I realized that my book belonged in the Superromance category. I called my agent and told her that I thought we had sent my book to the wrong places and we needed to send it to Harlequin Superromance. However, the problem with Harlequin is if you have been rejected by one department, it’s hard to get back into them. My agent made some calls and Harlequin asked me to resubmit to Superromance and they bought it. I ended up writing two books for them, ‘Out of the Depths’ and ‘The Summer Place’ then they gave me a five book contract, so I ended up with seven books with Harlequin Superromance, before that line ended up folding.”

So, tell us about your last book, ‘Gaining Visability’ which won the National Readers’ Choice Award. It is about a woman recovering from breast cancer who feels invisible to the world. The book tells the story of how she regains her place in the sun. The real backstory to the book is when I got my cancer diagnosis and how my small town rallied around me and visited me and had me on prayer chains. One elderly gentleman came to see me and told me the story of how his mother had breast cancer when he was a small boy. She had to have a radical mastectomy and

afterwards his father never touched her again. It struck me how horrible she must have felt to have gone through this ordeal and not have the support of her husband. I decided the next book I was going to write would give all women who had gone through this a happy ending.

“Women’s fiction does not have to have a romance in it, and if it does have a romance, she does not have to end up with the hero. It just has a satisfying ending. In a true romance the hero and the heroine have to have their happily ever after. If they don’t have that, it’s not considered a true romance. Gaining Visibility was deemed women’s fiction and my agent sold that to Kensington Publishers. Then I wrote another book for Kensington, it took about two years, but they rejected it. The subject was about sexual assault and forgiveness, unfortunately, I sent in this book in 2017, which was when the Me Too movement was starting up, and forgiveness of a sexual assault was not high on anyone’s list. That’s when I decided I had 10 books out in the world, so I retired. I was tired of sitting and writing every day and I wanted to play Pickleball and do other things, so I put that book away and I’ve let it go.”

Pam and Dick recently moved into a larger home in TGO with plans on spending more time here, hopefully with their three children and seven grandkids when they visit.

Who Is This Guy??

Once a year you drive by the Rally Lot and there he is, Gary Tetz. He’s hard to miss with his 60 foot rig that has a picture of his helicopter painted on the back. Gary is an adventurer - and his adventures include traveling the East coast, finding a great place to call home base for a week or two and flying his helicopter around. This is Gary’s twelfth year utilizing TGO as home base as he pilots his helicopter up and down the Brevard coast.

Gary calls Middletown, NY home, about 65 mile north of New York City, but travels a lot - always with his Bell Jet Ranger 206 in tow.

Gary is here for 100% pleasure... Some of us thought he might be here working with a media company, hired to do some flyover work for Daytona Bike Week. “Nope, “ says Gary, “I wouldn’t do that. I’ve had people ask me about that, because I’ve got my commercial rating, but I don’t want to be on a schedule. This is my pleasure time. I always fly up to watch the race, though.

“I bring my granddaughters down for a couple weeks. I’m usually here for 4-5 weeks, and they come down for a week during their winter break. This year they were here for nine days. When they aren’t here I just relax, and unload my helicopter over at Arthur Dunn Airport. When I feel like going for a ride, which is almost every day, I go for a ride. I’ve got some friends in West Palm and some others in Naples, so I’ll fly there and meet them for lunch or dinner.”

Asked about the other places he stays, “I find the places from the Good Sam book called Big Rigs. I need to be able to get this big truck in and out of places easily. That’s why I like this place. I wish there was a sewer hook up in the rally lot, but oh well. When the granddaughters are with me, they ride their bikes down to the bath house, plus there’s a bathroom in the pro shop. I used to bring my motorcycle with me in the truck, but I sold that a year or so ago.

“Someday I want to take my helicopter to Alaska, that’s my dream.”

This year’s Southern Classic Car Club show was another big success. The parade of over 20 cars (and a boat car) was led by Jerry the Ice Cream Man. Afterwards, the cars gathered in the Manor parking lot where residents could get an up-close look at the vehicles and enjoy some of Jerry’s soft serve ice cream.

The Numbers Game In TGO By Ed Brown

It’s that time again. Yes, I’m checking house numbers in TGO and I’m using my sharp eyes in daylight and good weather to see if your number is visible from the street. I’m using Plantation Dr. again too, and I am disappointed! The number of properties that had no numbers was one more than last year: 33! Why disappointed? Because I know from experience how important a property number can be to emergency workers making a timely arrival! If we can’t see flames and black smoke venting from the roof or hear the labored breathing of a pulmonary edema patient from the curb, or get blessed directions from a family member or neighbor in the street… “Where is the problem?” I’ve been there and it is crushing because time is more than money. It can be Life!

Now, what makes a house number ineffective? The number may be: Missing, Incorrect, Faded, Dirty, or otherwise not readable!

Come on TGO owners, residents and YES, RENTERS. None of us get a pass on OCCUPANCY STATUS in TGO.

FIRE CERTAINLY DOES NOT CARE! Some of our Condo Associations should look into this problem.

Park Manager Billy Specht suggests that the CSA Office “will dispatch our crew to repaint address numbers on driveways. Simply call us for a work order. Please know that we only use white paint, so if your driveway is treated or you would prefer another color or design, then please seek other options. We are happy to lend residents our driveway number stencils if you want to repaint the numbers yourself.”

Cut-out house numbers can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowe’s or a hardware store for $3 each. Make sure you apply on-house numbers in a location visible from both directions. Keep plants trimmed back so that house numbers remain visible.

Funny Thing Is… Spring Is Nothing To Sneeze At!

The old saying goes, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” So then, why is the astrological sign for Leo, the lion, in July? It’s just one of those many questions I have, like why they call where you park a driveway and where you drive a parkway. And while I’m giving you things to think about, answer me this, why do all you folks who like to invest give all your money to a person called a “broker?” Shouldn’t they be called a “richer” or something like that? And consider this, how come two of the richest professions, doctors and lawyers, call their business a practice? Shouldn’t they get it right before they charge us all that money? Also, why do they call those things apartments when they’re all stuck together? Speaking of structures, why do they call it a building when it’s already done? That’s enough philosophical stuff for you deep thinkers. The first day of Spring this year is March 19, two days after St. Patrick’s Day. So, as you transition from hangovers to hacking, you trade your drinks for drugs. Yes, Spring is nothing to sneeze at, or is it?

I woke up this morning to find my black colored sports car covered with what looks like an inch of yellow dust. And why does my car look like someone dropped a baseball infield on it? Pollen, that miraculous powder substance that germinates plants and creates so much beauty in the world. But, it hasn’t rained much, so that pollen just blows around in the strong spring winds and covers everything. Now, if your favorite color is yellow, you may think you’re in heaven. For the other 98% of us with a different favorite color, Spring can be hell, unless, of course, you own a car wash or are an allergy doctor. I’m guessing they’re the 2% who love yellow. So, after you finish washing your car and hosing down your driveway, it’s off to the doc to stop the sneezing. The doc gives you something called an antihistamine. If you like to sleep all day, you’ll love it. For those who like to be productive, they have non-drowsy antihistamines. These make you feel lousy while keeping you awake. Now I know why my allergy doc’s two favorite Disney characters are Sneezy and Dopey. It’s because Spring is nothing to sneeze at, or is it? - Dr. Sammy -
