Get ready... they’ll be here next month!

Another Eventful Two Weeks...

It was another busy two weeks here in TGO. Our golf course entertained several events including the annual CanAm Tournament with the Americans competing against the Canadians. We added two Hole-in-One golfers to our growing roster, and the ladies held their LGA Club Championship. There was our annual Classic Car Show with over 20 entries and beautiful weather. The shred truck showed up and so did a lot of residents who appreciate the service of shredding their old documents. We restocked over 5,000 fish throughout our 32 TGO lakes and there was the 2nd Annual Dog Dress Up Contest. Oh yeah... did you hear the Bee Gees performed to a sold-out crowd at the manor? If you’ve been bored, it’s your own fault!

CanAm Golf Tournament

By the time the next Happenings prints, many of our Canadian friends will be heading north. This month, one of our great golf events, the Annual CanAm Tournament took place. A fun opportunity for golfers from both countries to compete for bragging rights. Each foursome consists of two Americans and two Canadians. In addition to the golf, there are lots of laughs and a bit of imbibing going on. Everyone dresses in their country’s colors with some crazy looking outfits on display. At the end, Chuck Kandt awards the tournament cup to the winning country and many prizes are handed out. The day started out cold but ended up hot for the Americans... Photos on page 8

Manager’s Corner

March 31, 2023

Dear TGO Community,

Happy Spring, Everyone! Tomorrow is April 1, April Fool’s Day, so don’t miss this perfect opportunity to play a prank on your family or friends. This is also the time of year when many TGO residents are preparing to depart for their northern homes. We hope you enjoyed your time here and that you arrive home safely and have a wonderful summer. Please call the CSA office before you depart to let us know who your “home watch” designee will be. Please also make plans to maintain your property while you are away. Services are available to watch your Florida home and keep the weeds out of your gardens. Those who remain in the community this summer will appreciate your efforts to care for your property. Let’s all do our part to maintain our curb appeal year-round!

TGO has been super busy with activities as our high season comes to a close. Last week our pond monitors and volunteers from the Nature Center stocked our 32 ponds with fish. Approximately 5,300 blue gill and 1,200 catfish were introduced to their new home here at TGO. Bass and carp stocking will take place this fall. This stocking effort was led by Ron Peoples while John Roberts recovers from some surgery (best wishes for healing and comfort, John!). Our community paper shredding day also took place last week. Cindy Marini organized twelve volunteers and six Courtesy Patrol members and they shredded 4,500 lbs. of paper and assisted 145 TGO residents.

I was finally able to watch the Variety Show this year, and I witnessed many of our owners put on an outstanding show! Congratulations to all involved in the Variety Show for providing me and the audience with a bundle of laughs and entertainment. This is a fun place to live! Some photos from the show can be found on page 20 of this issue.

Last week the Board of Directors hosted a wonderful quarterly employee breakfast, and I was able to recognize some special employees in front of their peers. Buildings Supervisor Guy Sampson was recognized for serving our community now for 20 years! Accounting Clerk Tim Sanborn was recognized as our Employee of the Quarter. You can read more about Tim in this issue of The Happenings on page 26. The entire employee team observed a moment of silence to remember our friend and lawn team member Doug Gonzales, who passed away suddenly last week. We are now collecting cards, gifts and condolences for the family here in the CSA office and will deliver them to Doug’s mom and family during a celebration of life, which will take place on Saturday, April 15 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, at F. Burton Smith Park in Cocoa.

Finally, a few reminders for our owners:

• Please plan to join us for a “Living with Alligators” presentation by Alligator Frank Robb on Wednesday, April 19 in the Manor. A meet and greet will begin at 2:00 pm and the presentation will follow at 2:30 pm. The Board meeting will start at 3:00 pm as scheduled. I hope to see you all there for some educational fun.

• Please be sure to take the Blue Heron Restaurant Survey. It was emailed to all owners on Friday, March 24. We will keep the survey open through this weekend for those who haven’t taken it yet. Contact the CSA office if you did not receive a link and we’ll get it out to you. The information gathered on this survey will help our Restaurant Committee and staff determine a new Spring menu, and make decisions on future services and hours of operation.

Next Sunday, April 9, is Easter. I wish you and yours a blessed Easter Sunday with family and friends! The Blue Heron is planning a special Easter meal, call for more information or reservations.

Sincerely,

Guidelines For Tenant Registration By Owners

1. All tenants must be registered with the CSA Office in order to be entered into the Gatehouse System. If you are leasing your property or if you are letting a guest use your property in your absence, they need to be registered with the CSA Office.

2. Why do they need to be registered? There are several reasons why:

a. If your tenant wants to call in a visitor and the tenant is not registered as residing within TGO, then the visitor will not be allowed entrance because as far as the Security Officer knows, the tenant doesn’t reside at TGO.

b. If the tenant is not registered and there is an emergency situation where the tenant needs to be notified, the CSA would be unable to contact them because they are not registered and we will not know how to contact the tenant.

c. If your tenant wants to receive mail (UPS/FedEx/Priority Mail/medicine), the mail will not be accepted at the Mail Facility because they are not registered as living at TGO.

3. What information does the CSA Office need?

a. Tenant Name(s)

b. TGO Address

c. Dates of Arrival/Departure

d. Phone number

e. E-mail Address (optional)

PROVIDE INFORMATION TO THE CSA OFFICE

The Great Outdoors - Community Services Association 100-D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780

Phone: 321-268-9767 Fax: 321-268-2380

email: service@tgocsa.com

4. Your tenant must get a gate pass from the Guard Gate. The tenant may stop by the CSA Office to get maps, pool wrist bands, TV channel line-up, “The Happenings” newsletter, etc. Also, if the guest extends their stay, or departs early, their gate pass expiration date must also be updated. You, the owner, must notify the CSA Office beforehand to have these changes made or the tenant will automatically be removed from the system along with any other applicable information.

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.

Douglas Gonzales - October 31, 1982 - March 21, 2023

Doug Gonzales passed away on March 21 unexpectedly from a long-term illness. Doug was a two-year CSA lawn crewmember, a hard worker and a genuinely great guy to work with. He was a father of three children. The CSA is working to assist his family. Doug will be truly missed by his co-workers, friends and those inside TGO who had an opportunity to get to know him. Please keep his family, and our lawn crew team, in your thoughts and prayers.

Doug’s Celebration of Life will be Saturday, April 15, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at F. Burton Smith Park, 7575 W King Street in Cocoa. He loved playing disc golf there.

What Your CSA Assessments Pay For

It’s always good to stop and review what our quarterly assessments go towards. TGO is like a small city and it takes a lot of coordination and manpower to keep us running efficiently. Our lawn crew, irrigation and waste water management team, our CSA patrol and CSA administration staff, plus our residents, all work together to keep TGO a great place.

You Don’t Want To Miss This Presentation By Alligator Robb

April 19 - 2:30 - 3:00 pm

Inside the TGO Manor

Alligator Robb is one of the foremost experts on Crocodilians and is coming to TGO to inform us about how alligators think, their routines and what we need to know to maintain a peaceful coexistence.

We have lots of gators in TGO and it’s good for all of us to be informed. This presentation happens right before our monthly Board of Directors meeting, so you might want to stick around for that, AND, make sure to show up early to get a seat.

WHEN YOU SEE A GATOR... KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The 2023 TGO Variety Show

This year’s Variety Show was a lot of fun. Edith and Archie Bunker were the emcees/hosts, driving a motorhome across America. The entertainers were your neighbors and friends, brave enough to step up on stage and showcase their talents. There were solos and group songs (one about being on the cover of The Happenings!) and skits. Halfway through, the clowns showed up (one of them is 93 years old! Edith and Archie bickered about how to drive and park their RV (you’ve been there!) They wound up in Las Vegas and eventually at a TGO Rally... with a tribute for our veterans. If you missed it, make sure you don’t next year.

Eagles Soaring in TGO

Bald Eagles - the symbol for our country of strength and freedom since 1782. The Great Outdoors is very fortunate to host two eagle nests with a third in close proximity. Two of the nests have been inhabited by eagle pairs for several years, while the third was just built this year. And, we are very happy to report that all three have at least one eaglet!

How much do you really know about eagles? Let us share some quick facts about our feathered residents:

• They can fly up to 30 miles per hour

• Their wingspan is 6 to 7 feet

• They grow to about 3 feet in length (the size of a typical 2-3 year old child)

• Females are larger than the males

• They typically live to about 30 years

• Their diet consists of fish, rodents, road kill, squirrel, rabbit, etc.

• Nests are typically built high up in trees, however, they can also be located in man-made structures such as cell towers or water towers

How about those baby eagles - better know as eaglets! There is nothing more exciting than watching an eagle nest and spot that fuzzy little head when it first pops up!

• Eagles usually lay 1 to 3 eggs

• Eggs are incubated and eaglets are cared for by both eagle parents

• The gestation period is 34 to 36 days

• Eaglets are fed by their parents until they begin to learn to eat on their own and can ultimately feed themselves all of the time

• They are fully grown at about 9 weeks

• Eaglets will “branch” (go out on a limb - literally) at about 10 to 12 weeks and will “fledge” (fly out of the nest) at about 3 months old

• They do not get their iconic white head until they are about 5 years old

Bald Eagles were once on the endangered species list, and while they have rebounded in huge numbers, they are still on the protected list. There are over 1,100 nests in Florida alone - with the majority in Central Florida.

Here in TGO, our most “famous” nest is just off the spur of the Watson Trail. The entrance to the Watson Trail is just to the south of the Nature Trail bridge and north of the Library. There is a short walk through our wonderful flora and fauna to the beginning of the St. Johns River marsh area. As you walk out in the marsh (don’t worry, there is a trail and it is well trampled), look back at the tree line for the tallest group of trees and you will be able to spot the nest. The pair of eagles that nest there have done so for

several years and has laid anywhere from 1 to 3 eggs each year. As of the writing of this article, there is one eaglet in the nest and mom or dad are usually present in the nest or nearby in the branches.

There is also a nest just off of Fawn Trail that now has one eaglet very recently hatched. The third nest is located in the Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility and Wetland Area just to the east of TGO - it too has 1 eaglet this year. Please be advised that you must always stay a minimum of 330 feet from an eagle’s nest and it is illegal to disturb them in any way. They are beautiful creatures to observe and are worth every preservation effort!

Brian Grande and Sharon Maloney are volunteers with the Florida Audubon Society and monitor the 3 nests continually throughout the year. If anyone is interested in an informational walk and observation of a nest, please don’t hesitate in letting them know!

Always feel free to contact me (Sharon Maloney) at 770-2946362 or by email at TGONatureCenter@outlook.com if you have any questions about or suggestions for the Nature Center or anything you would like to see more information about.

Eagle nest on Fawn Trail

Hello Dolly!

It’s so nice to have you here in TGO! For those of you who may not know, Dolly Akers is the President of the Nature Center here in The Great Outdoors, and is one very busy lady. She is on the Hidden Lakes Social Committee and very active in TGO church. She is married to Scott and has been since 1979.

Dolly hails from a small town in eastern Iowa and is one of five children. Being raised on a farm, 4-H and showing cattle at the Cedar County Fair were a big part of her life, along with entering sewing and home improvement projects. Her family owned a carry-out only restaurant where she worked from middle school through high school. After high school she completed programs in both floral design and horticulture.

Of course, her story doesn’t end there and begs the question - “Dolly, is there anything you haven’t done?!” After landing a job with General Mills, she worked for ten years in accounting, payroll, and inventory control all while completing her degree in business administration. While working at GM, she was afforded the opportunity to work in a high-performance system that made the cake mixes for Betty Crocker (along with cereal, frosting, and fruit-roll-ups – now we know who to “blame” for all the yummy sweets we love). Dolly stated that this was a wonderful learning experience in how to work as a team.

In her 33 year tenure at GM, she also trained to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). One of her most memorable experiences (laughs) was when her instructor was explaining the white board in each emergency room cubicle and was sure to tell them that if they saw S.O.B. on it, that meant “shortness of breath” and NOT “son-of-a-$#%@#)! They would handle any medical emergencies that would happen within their plant.

...she completed 11 more marathons in the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska. After two hip replacements she thought it might be best to retire...

At the ripe “young” age of 46, she decided to begin competitive walking! Her accumulation of t-shirts grew as there was a

5K race somewhere almost every weekend. After a while it was suggested that she train for a 26.2 mile marathon and as Dolly put it, “crazy as it sounds, I joined up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for my first marathon in San Diego.” She said she must have caught the “bug” because she completed 11 more marathons in the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska. After two hip replacements she thought it might be best to retire from the racing circuit (probably a good idea!)

In 2012, Dolly and Scott sold everything and moved away from Iowa. They love RV’ing and plan to continue for a long time to come. They moved to TGO in June of 2015 and they love it here. Dolly has not only taken the lead on the Nature Center Board of Directors, but has shown what true leadership and teamwork can accomplish. She headed up the movement to get our Nature Center back open and continues with new and fresh ideas to keep it moving forward.

Employee Of The Quarter

Tim has almost seven years of service with the CSA. He plays a critical role here at TGO, as he has no backup and if he doesn’t get the job done, it could create big problems with our business and our vendors. The work Tim does is time consuming, tedious, requires a ton of focus and detail, and must be done with complete accuracy. He interacts and supports all departments within TGO. All our supervisors and managers visit Tim regularly with paperwork they need him to process, and bills they need him to code and pay. He receives and pays all our bills, and sends out invoices to all our payable accounts. Tim has identified many ways for the CSA to save money, and he sometimes finds billing errors made by our contractors and vendors which helps avoid overpayments. TGO is very fortunate to have the absolute right guy to do this important work. His attendance is stellar, he is a hard worker, his work is always accurate, and he cares a great deal about this community, his co-workers and the owners. Tim is a key member of all our teams, the Blue Heron, the TGO golf and all our CSA operations. In his spare time, Tim enjoys spending time with family and friends, he enjoys road cycling, playing golf, and is a big fan of craft beer. He also enjoys photography of our local wildlife and regularly walks our TGO nature trails during his lunch breaks. Please join us in recognizing our Employee of the Quarter, Tim Sanborn.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

The official pitstop for the CanAm tournament had lots of libations and snacks for all the participants. It was a bit chilly, though. Marilyn Adams, Karen Posey, Charlie Woods, Coletta Gabele and Myron Whitley, all officers of the TGO Pickleball Board, show off their new shirts and jackets. Many members purchased a shirt, so if you see the red shirt around TGO, give them a wave. Karri Conover repped team USA in their victory over the Canadians at the CanAm Tourny. Here she is getting ready to eat one of Kelly’s Cakes muffins. Captain Juggles caught in the act of boosting the yellow ‘Vette at the 2nd annual TGO Classic Car Show!

Ron Peoples (middle top) headed up the fish restocking project for all the TGO lakes. 5,260 Bluegill and 1,175 Catfish were distributed throughout the 32 lakes. There was a good turnout of volunteers to help release the fish. Ron’s wife, Dori, helped with the logistics on how many fish were to go into each lake. Thanks everyone!

At last Friday’s Employee Breakfast, Donnie Hilton was recognized for her service and retirement while Guy Sampson was awarded a plaque for 20 years of service here at TGO. Thank you to both Donnie and Guy from all of us.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

Shred day was another big hit with lots of TGO residents dropping off their old papers. Cindy Marini headed up this year’s project and had lots of help. Carol Renaudette is doing a diamond dot painting that originated from a photo of our Manor pool. See more on Diamond Painting on Page 49. CSA Patrol officer, Bill Kahl, and his 5-monthold Schnauzer named Harley, who is now the new CSA Courtesy Patrol Mascot. Barbara Ellis and Rudi Pameijer took in the car show with their pups, Ali (left) and Rambo.

Collecting And Home Fires by

Lean, Clean, and Green, as you know, applies to making your property Firewise safe outside. What about Inside? We can forget the green color guidance, but the Lean and Clean should still apply inside. Stored items should be inventoried and logged in or out. The concept is to be able to locate them for future retrieval and use. Is the home seriously cluttered and disorganized? Is movement about the residence, in the dark, possible without tripping over the valuable stuff brought back from recycling today? Or is the building of a FIRE HAZARD in progress?

The “collector” should rent a storage space here in TGO or out there In The World. Of course they will inventory what they store, what needs to be kept neat and organized. Access has to be assured for firefighters dragging charged hose lines, particularly in a dark, smoky, super-heated space! I have lost many brother and sister fire fighters in dark, smoke-filled storage areas over the years… No Joke!

Why “Collecting” Increases Fire Risks:

• First Responders can not move swiftly through a home filled with clutter.

• Responders and Residents can be trapped in a home when exits are blocked!

• The weight of stored items, especially if water is added to extinguish a fire, can cause building collapse.

• Fighting fires is a very risky business in a home full of collectibles. It is hard to enter the home to provide medical care. It is hard to get the patient out on a gurney or a backboard.

• Clutter impedes the search and rescue of occupants and pets.

• Firefighters can be trapped in a home when exits are blocked. They can be injured by objects falling from piles.

• Cooking is unsafe if flammable items are close to the stove or oven.

• Heating units may be too close to things that can burn.

• Electrical wiring may be old or worn from the weight of piles of stuff. Pests can chew wires and start fires. It happened here, in the Nature Center in 2014! How can you reduce the risk of fire injury?

• Install working smoke alarms in the home. Test them at least once a month.

• Help the residents make a home safety and escape plan. Stress the importance of clear pathways and exits.

• Exit routes may change as new items are brought into the home.

• Reach out to community resources. Talk to our Park Manager and Brevard Fire Rescue to alert them to your concerns.

COLLECTING can be a dangerous “hobby,” and one that is difficult to discuss with a “COLLECTING” homeowner. In the interest of community safety and welfare, it needs to be addressed. THINK FIREWISE, BE SAFE!

Funny Thing Is…

I have no love for love bugs. Yes, it seems this time of year we Floridians trade snow birds for love bugs. It’s like the little devils wait until all our northern friends leave, then they arrive just in time to depress us a little more. Unlike our snow bird friends who leave a lasting impression of good memories, our love bugs leave a lasting impression of splats on our nice shiny cars if we don’t clean them off right away. Sure, all winter we are rejoicing in not having to deal with that white, powdery stuff known as snow, but is it better here in the Spring? We go from no snow to yellow snow (pollen) to black snow (love bugs) in May! With real snow at least you know which direction it’s going, thanks to gravity. With the black snow, they’re going all over the place. Ever try to walk around them? With black snow we don’t have to shovel it, but it takes equally as long to deal with it (washing the car) before we can get back to our regular lives. All of a sudden we realize that white, powdery stuff isn’t so bad. At least it’s pretty when it inundates us. You wake up the next morning and oh, it’s so lovely. With love bugs you wake up the next morning and your car looks like a love bug hive sitting in your driveway. You know the Dr. Phil’s of the world can learn a lot from watching these pesky little creatures. Just look at them. The males are born first. They wait for the females like guys who put their profiles on a dating site and check every 30 seconds for a response. When the females come it’s like, BAM, they immediately hook up with the first one they see. No courting period. And they are jealous little suckers because they stay connected for their entire lives, three or four days, so that no other males can get their girl. Now the real education comes when you watch how they live their short lives. The male wants to go this way and the female wants to go that way. Sound familiar? This push and pull struggle results in their lives being totally destroyed, usually by a truck, sedan or SUV. If they would only agree and go together in the same direction, everyone would be happy except the owners of the car wash. Hear that Dr. Phil? Yeah, I have no love for love bugs, but will love it when love bug season ends.

New Law May Offer Financial Opportunities

Outside events can affect your financial strategies. And that may be the case with the recent passage of legislation known as the SECURE 2.0 Act.

For example, in your 401(k) or similar plan, you can now take your employer’s contributions on a Roth basis. While these contributions will count as taxable income, they can eventually be withdrawn, along with any earnings they generate, tax free, provided you meet certain conditions.

Here’s another change: You now must start taking withdrawals (RMDs) from your traditional IRA and 401(k) at 73, instead of 72. In 2033, this age will increase to 75. These new age limits may give you more flexibility in planning your retirement income.

And if you’re a business owner, you can now get a startup tax credit covering 100%- up from 50% - of the administrative costs of opening a 401(k) plan, up to $5,000 for each of the first three years of the plan.

The SECURE 2.0 Act contains many other elements, so you may want to consult with your tax and financial professionals to determine how you might be affected by the new law’s provisions - and how you could take advantage of them.

The Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary

The Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary is a 140 acre loop of scrub forest located on the Atlantic Costal Ridge in Rockledge and is home to the Florida scrub-jay.

Helen and Allan first came to Florida in 1937 for their honeymoon, and were astounded by the beauty of the flora and the birds found there. After they moved to Cocoa in 1952, they led the Christmas bird count for more than two decades.

As the official photographer for the National Audubon Society, Allan knew a great deal about birds. He taught bird lore, researched and wrote books and articles about birds with Helen, and served on the staff of Audubon for more than 35 years.

Cruickshank is part of the sanctuary network established by the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program.

Famous for the place you can visit and have a scrub-jay perch on top of your head, visitors to Cruickshank can also hike the 1.1 mile trail on the western portion of the sanctuary. This trail winds through pine flatwoods habitat where raptors may be circling overhead or perched in high pine trees. Patches of oak, sand pine scrub, and freshwater depression marshes add to the Sanctuary’s diversity.

What

“Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS

“My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ

When to Change the Batteries in Your Smoke Detector

The smoke alarms throughout your home help play a crucial role in keeping you and your family safe by alerting you to potential dangers. However, the best smoke alarms provide no value if they do not have working batteries. It is important that you check and test your home smoke detectors often and replace the batteries in order to ensure the detectors are working properly.

What Smoke Alarm Do You Have?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends changing the batteries in your smoke detectors every 6 months. Some manufacturers offer 10-year smoke alarms that have a built-in 10-year battery, which eliminates the need for battery replacements for the life of the detectors.

Testing and Changing Your Smoke Alarm Batteries

It is recommended you test your alarms at least once a month to ensure they are working properly, and replace the batteries every six months, while the detector itself should be replaced at least every 10 years. For 10-year lithium-powered smoke alarms, you won’t need to replace the battery. Instead, replace the entire alarm after 10 years from the manufacture date on the back of the alarm. If your detector is hardwired into your home’s electrical system, replace the backup battery at least every six months and replace the smoke detector itself at least every 10 years.

Signs You Need to Replace the Batteries In Your Smoke Detector

You’ll likely notice a high-pitched chirping noise coming from your smoke alarm when it’s time for the batteries to be changed. It is best to be proactive and change the batteries in your smoke detectors before that noise occurs. When you change the batteries in one alarm, make sure you change the batteries in the rest of the alarms in your home as well. A helpful reminder to check your smoke alarms and change the batteries every six months is Daylight Saving Time. Check and test your smoke and fire detectors when you change your clocks.
