The Orlando Wetlands
It's only a 15 mile drive from TGO and one of the nicest nature areas in the state of Florida. There are over 1,600 acres to wander around and take in all the beauty, birds and animal life. There are miles of trails and roads to hike and there is even a tram available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. You can also ride through the park on horseback or take one of the many tours available. There is the 2,200 foot long cypress boardwalk and lots of ponds, marshes and woods area. You definitely want to bring your binoculars and a camera plus some water and sunscreen. More on page 24...

We Have A New Bingo System!
The Activities Committee just recently installed a new Bingo sytem in the Plantation Manor. Bill Severence, Bob Wilcox, and Pat Small headed up the research team to come up with the best system, which came from Video King in Tampa. Bingo is a huge draw here in TGO - so the new sytem will be well received. More on page 51...

Manager’s Corner
May 12, 2023
Dear TGO Community,
I sincerely wish all of our TGO mothers a Happy Mother's Day with family and friends. We are now entering one of my favorite times of the year here at TGO. It is late spring, when our roads quiet down, and the deer come out to graze on freshly growing grass and nurse their fawns. This is a nice season to view lots of young wildlife such as newly fledged birds throughout our property. Our plants and animals are thriving now that the days are long, the sun is shining, and our afternoon thunderstorms are picking up. The CSA team and I are now focused on executing our low-season improvement projects and gearing up for the hot and humid season. TruGreen will be here next week, May 16 - 17, to treat your lawns again. I will keep you posted in this article on the progress of our summer improvements.
Our CSA team continues to grow. We’ve recently added two new lawn crew workers and nine new Blue Heron employees. Friday of last week we gathered all our full-time employees together for mandatory safety training. The topic of this training was working safely around Florida’s wildlife. Biologist and alligator expert Frank Robb returned to present our employees with information about snakes and alligators, and we talked about how to work safely around our lakes. Most importantly, the staff was reminded to keep a safe distance from our wildlife, and never to feed them.
You will find an updated menu for Blue Heron restaurant published in this issue of The Happenings on pages 38 and 39. This menu includes a new ‘value’ breakfast meal and five ‘value’ lunch baskets. There are also a few new menu items. We are listening to you! The new value meals are in response to the recent restaurant survey suggesting we offer some smaller portion meals at a better value. We will continue to use feedback from this survey to drive future changes.
Our former 30-yard ‘picnic box’ recycling bin has been retired after many years of service. It was removed from TGO this week, and Waste Management is replacing this bin with three, 8-yard flip-top bins for recycling. For now, we will continue to use the smaller, 20-yard picnic box, but this large box is also rusting out, and soon it may not be serviceable. The new 8-yard bins have yellow fliptops, and we will stencil recycling messages on them so they are clearly marked RECYCLING! Please pay attention to these signs, recycle only clean plastic, cans, and paper, and be sure to flatten your cardboard so there is plenty of room as we work with these new bins.
Now I will recognize some great work in our community. CSA employee Mark Gray worked closely with the Beautification Committee to make some very beautiful changes to the beds around the CSA office building. They are now working on improvements at the Manor pool. The Activities Committee recently upgraded their bingo board in The Manor, and the new system looks and works great! Thank you to both these committees on jobs well done!
Finally, in this issue of The Happenings, on page 9, you will find some important information about our wastewater system, specifically requesting that residents are very careful about what you are sending into our wastewater pipes. Our wastewater team had a tougher than normal season maintaining our plant, and they are suspicious that chemical treatments used in RV tanks might be causing problems for our plant’s biological processes. We maintain a separate dump station for RVs who need to dump their tanks containing chemical treatments. Please read the article and help us maintain a healthy plant.
Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT and the use of RV HOLDING TANK CHEMICALS
Over the years we have had problems with our Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) due to some common chemicals used in RV holding tanks. These chemicals kill the beneficial bacteria that are necessary for the WWTP to function. When this happens, we must pump out the WWTP and have the wastewater hauled away at a high cost. In 2006, the Community Services Association had to spend over $200,000 in hauling and other costs in order to restore the WWTP to proper operation, this resulted in a special assessment of $150 per site.
What can you do? Make certain that you do not use any RV holding tank treatments that contain any of the chemicals listed below. If your RV holding tank currently contains any of these chemicals, use the official dump station near the rally lot, not your home sewer system.
AVOID RV TANK TREATMENTS THAT CONTAIN THESE CHEMICALS:
ACTIVE INGREDIENT
Bronopol (bromo-nltropropane-dial)
Dowacil (1-(3-chorallyl)-3,4, 7-triaza-1-azoniaadamantane chloride)
Formaldehyde (also known as Formalin; degradate of bronopol)
Glutaraldehyde (also known as embalming fluid)
Paraformaldehyde (polymerized formaldehyde)
Para-dichlorobenzene (common ingredient In mothballs, urinal cakes, and toilet bowl fresheners)
THREATS TO HUMAN & ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Bacterial pesticide
Bacterial pesticide (EPA states “Do not discharge effluent containing this product to sewer systems without previously notifying the local sewage treatment plant authority.”)
Kills or retards bacterial growth, recognized by EPA as probable carcinogen(1); moderately toxic to Humans(2)
Retards bacterial growth and covers sewage odor. Is an eye/ inhalation irritant.
Very toxic to humans(3). (See formaldehyde)
Known carcinogen(1) and drinking water contaminant; moderately toxic to humans.
(1) A carcinogen causes cancer (2) Lethal dose for 150 lb person is between 1 ounce to 16 ounces
(3) Lethal dose for 150 lb person is between 1 teaspoon to 1 ounce
NOTE: The University of Arizona and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have placed these chemicals on their alert list, and recommend not using RV holding tank products that contain these active ingredients.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS: If you find that It’s necessary to use a holding tank treatment In your RV, please use one of these ecologically friendly treatments listed below:
RV Pro 200 (by Heartland Labs), Pure Power {by OP Products), Piranha (by Super Seal), Eco-Save (by Eco-Save Products), and other products that use enzymes and bacteria as their main Ingredients are also permissible. If you will use more water to flush and dump your holding tanks more frequently, you may not need to use any RV holding tank treatment. Thanks for your cooperation.

Guidelines For Tenant Registration By Owners
1. All tenants must be registered with the CSA Office in order to be entered into the Gatehouse System.
If you are leasing your property or if you are letting a guest use your property in your absence, they need to be registered with the CSA Office.
2. Why do they need to be registered? There are several reasons why:
a. If your tenant wants to call in a visitor and the tenant is not registered as residing within TGO, then the visitor will not be allowed entrance because as far as the Security Officer knows, the tenant doesn’t reside at TGO.
b. If the tenant is not registered and there is an emergency situation where the tenant needs to be notified, the CSA would be unable to contact them because they are not registered and we will not know how to contact the tenant.
c. If your tenant wants to receive mail (UPS/FedEx/Priority Mail/medicine), the mail will not be accepted at the Mail Facility because they are not registered as living at TGO.
3. What information does the CSA Office need?
a. Tenant Name(s)
b. TGO Address
c. Dates of Arrival/Departure
d. Phone number
e. E-mail Address (optional)
PROVIDE INFORMATION TO THE CSA OFFICE
The Great Outdoors - Community Services Association
100-D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780
Phone: 321-268-9767 Fax: 321-268-2380
email: service@tgocsa.com
4. Your tenant must get a gate pass from the Guard Gate. The tenant may stop by the CSA Office to get maps, pool wrist bands, TV channel line-up, “The Happenings” newsletter, etc. Also, if the guest extends their stay, or departs early, their gate pass expiration date must also be updated. You, the owner, must notify the CSA Office beforehand to have these changes made or the tenant will automatically be removed from the system along with any other applicable information.
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.
• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.

A Message From FWC - Do NOT Feed The Gators!
We received this report from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission officer who investigated the alligator attack on a TGO owner on Windsong Way, Friday afternoon, April 14.
Billy,
It was passed along to me that you were interested in hearing details about the alligator bite incident on April 14 in your community. The basic details of the incident aren’t believed to be much different than what was reported the day of the incident. The victim’s account was that he was in his backyard with his back to the water, approximately 3-5 ft from the water’s edge. The victim was bitten on his leg and drug into the water where his other leg was bitten. The resulting struggle led to the victim’s leg being amputated by the alligator. Three alligators were removed from the area of the incident. It is believed that the offending animal was removed from the pond. The other alligators removed demonstrated behaviors that indicated they no longer feared humans and could pose a danger to the community.
I will defer any further injury detail to the victim and his family.
From speaking with neighbors and victim, everyone has denied feeding or seeing any feeding of alligators. I suspect but cannot prove, that the community has an issue with people feeding them. The behaviors demonstrated by multiple alligators observed that day, not just the offending animal, would indicate a diminished fear of humans likely from feeding activity. I think it was a good idea to have an officer speak at a meeting but the community should do more.
I would encourage the community to continue to work with FWC to try and prevent similar incidents in the future.
I know there are community members who have strong feelings about removing alligators who have become an issue but feeding them should be considered a death sentence for the alligators. I would hope those community members now recognize this and will be motivated to help the community curb those feeding activities.
Please report any concerning alligators to SNAP (Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program) 866-392-4286.
Please report feeding activity to FWC 888-404-3922.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.
• For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!
If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434 .

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fi nes and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The Safe Room by Ed Brown
How can you build or modify your home to afford you greater protection from Florida’s worst weather abnormalities: The Hurricane and Tornado? What equipment should you stock to help insure your family's SURVIVAL?
It was a “Safe Room!” built as a wood-framed room inside a large closet or separate bedroom; it was a room within a room with a solid wood framed and finished ceiling just below the room’s normal inside ceiling. It had a solid door with impressively strong hinges and two equally strong dead bolts to secure the room from inside. There were two heavy duty hasps on the door, ready for locks, so that the Safe Room might be secured as a “STRONG ROOM” for keeping valuables safe from theft. Shelves and storage spaces lined the secondary walls. Sockets for electrical services were built in as were GFIs. Two different builders were building this Safe Room in 10% of their new construction in New Smyrna Beach in 2010. I love the concept of a Safe Room in a Florida home. Why did this Safe Room Concept not catch on? I have some thoughts on this.
1. A developer or realtor could lose the sale by introducing Storm Danger and “Safety” to a potential buyer new to Florida, who never really thought of hurricane season or tornadoes.
2. A Safe Room could increase building cost by 10% or 20%.
3. There is no guarantee that a Safe Room can insure Safety, but it could stimulate liability on the part of the builder or seller if it doesn’t provide what it was advertised to do in a Hurricane!
4. DENIAL: "That could never happen to us."
A first floor interior room (no windows), such as a pantry, can be re-purposed as a Safe Room. That room should include canned food with a good can opener and freeze-dried food for variety. Have a way of heating water for reconstituting the freeze dried food. Also, paper plates, plastic utensils and plastic garbage bags. Don’t forget bottled water for drinking, cooking, hygiene, and pets too. Consider occupant waste storage. (A 5 gallon plastic paint bucket, with a snug lid, lined with a heavy duty plastic bag could be your toilet. Don’t forget toilet paper!
In addition, a yoga pad, a pillow and blanket for each Safe Room occupant, a battery powered weather radio and charger to keep track of storm progress and, of course, your smart phone. In the event of a building collapse that traps you and the family in the Safe Room, have appropriate tools for digging out. Add a rescue whistle to attract rescuers. The same tools will help you support safe recovery of your neighbors!
Discuss the concept of a SAFE ROOM WITH YOUR FAMILY and with trusted friends and neighbors. Why limit the information about SAFE ROOM concept to a "trusted few?" Would you share it with a panicked community or with "road bandits" looking for a convenient supply stop?
There are many questions regarding the Safe Room Concept and inevitable natural disasters. Be Aware of what is happening. Avoid dangers and needless risks to deter threats to you and your family. De-escalate a bad situation. Be prepared to defend your home and family and prepare ahead of the incident.
THINK FIREWISE, BE SAFE!

Exploring Near TGO
We all know that we are very fortunate to be able to live or visit our nature oriented community here at TGO, but we are also lucky to have some amazing surrounding areas to explore!
One of those areas is the Orlando Wetlands Park. Just a mere 15 miles from TGO, it is a most fascinating and beautiful 1,650 acres of nature. Whether you are into photography or just want to wander and take in all of the many animals, birds, and native plants – there is always something to see and it's different every time you go. The park is located in Christmas and is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. It is a man-made wetland used to provide treatment for reclaimed water from the surrounding area and the city of Orlando.
There are also multiple ways to tour the park. One can walk the many dirt roads throughout the park for a leisurely morning/afternoon/full day of taking in all of the views or ride your bike (non-motorized) if you prefer. There are also free trams (driven by volunteers) to take visitors around on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 am to 3 pm (however Sundays only run September to May). You can also ride through the park on horseback. No pets are allowed (leased or unleashed), also no boating, swimming, drones, hunting or fishing. There are a variety of tours that can also be requested and will include creation, operation, management, and wildlife of the park, and are open to indi viduals, families, schools, and other groups.
Each “road” of the park presents a different view of nature including ponds/lakes, marshes, and forest areas. There is a new 2,200 foot cypress boardwalk that goes across water, giving a “bird’s eye” view of wildlife below, both in the water and on the water, along with everything from wood storks, egrets, herons, and Roseate Spoonbills making their nests in the trees beside it.
Upon entering the park there is an Education Center which acts as a visitor center where visitors are asked to
stop to sign in and out. The center holds much information with displays, brochures, and maps of the wetlands. There are also exhibits that are both seasonal and permanent and may include live animals at times. It is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (Sundays are September to May) from 9 am to 3 pm.
In planning your visit, be sure to take the weather into consideration. The area is mostly out in the open, so early mornings the hot days, sunscreen, water, etc. are a must to think about. Also, when planning your visit, be sure to include a pair of binoculars!
Some of the wildlife you may encounter and be able to view might include, but is not limited to:
Herons:
Great Blue, Night, Green, Little Blue, Tri-colored
Multiple species of egrets: Great, Snowy, Cattle, Reddish
Wood Storks
Roseate Spoonbills
Many different types of ducks: Black-bellied Whistling, Coots, Wood, etc.
Hawks
Bald Eagles
Owls
Many different species of song birds
Sandhill Cranes
Alligators
Otters
Snakes
Fish
Lizards
24
This list just names a few, there are many more listed on the park website along with a map and guide, flora and fauna, a self-guided tour, butterfly and dragonfly lists, and trees and shrubs.
Another area with similar sightings is located right next door! The Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility and Wetland Area is a much smaller rendition of the Orlando Wetlands, but equally as entertaining. They are open Monday to Friday 7 am to 3:30 pm. You can drive, ride a bike, or walk the perimeter of the wetlands (it’s about three miles around). Please make sure to sign in and out at the office on your way in.
Personal note: You will want to plan plenty of time and/or multiple visits to both places! When going to either wetlands, I found I could have wandered for quite some time to take everything in and, of course, visiting on different days and different times of the day you will always experience something different!

Four Common Dragonfl ies Found Around The Great Outdoors
Roseate Skimmer
The Roseate Skimmer (Orthemis ferruginea) is a large skimmer found around quiet waters such as ponds, lakes, and ditches. It is native to the Americas with distribution from Canada to Brazil. The dragonfly is about two inches long and has a wing span up to 1 3/4 inches. Female skimmers are golden brown or yellow but can look more like the brightly colored males, pictured here, in sunlight. Males vigorously defend their territory.
Needham’s Skimmer
The Needham’s Skimmer (Libellula needhami) is found most often in coastal areas throughout Florida. This species of dragonflies was named after James Needham, an American entomologist.
The adult male Needham’s Skimmer’s body is orangish-red while the female’s body is yellow. Both have pale orange wings. Adults grow to 2.1 inches. Look for them in wetlands, ponds, and brackish water.
Great Blue Skimmer
Great Blue Skimmers (Libellula vibrans) are found in forested wetlands, swamps, and near lakes and ponds where still or slow-moving shallow water is present. These are large dragonflies that measure 2.3 inches and are often called King Skimmers. The bodies of adult male Great Blue Skimmers are blue while the female’s body is brown. After fertilization, females pick up a drop of water to help eggs stay on the shore. Once the larvae hatch, they return to the water where they develop into adults.
Common Green Darner
Common Green Darners (Anax junius) are found throughout Florida. These large dragonflies are easily recognizable with their bright green coloring and iridescent wings. Juveniles with purple abdomens grow into females who have green abdomens or males with blue abdomens. Males have an eyespot on their head that gives the appearance of a cyclops.
Look for Common Green Darners near water sources in the wild or in your yard. They are somewhat migratory and breed in the Southern US, including Florida, in fall and early winter. Females deposit one egg at a time into the stem of an underwater plant. Juveniles, known as Naiads, are born. They look like tiny lobsters and spend their days underwater where they dine on tadpoles and insects before moving to dry land and growing into an adult.
Common Green Darners prey on bees, wasps, butterflies, and midges. Perhaps the best reason to encourage them to visit your yard is they will help control the mosquito population.

TGO was again represented in a tournament outside the park. We had seven members participate in a charity event called Battle for the Kids in Melbourne on April 21 - 23. They all had good competitive games with stiff competition. The team of Marcie Doherty and Kathy Wood, playing in a women's doubles division 3.5, came in third and won the bronze. Congratulations to all the players.

Lift off!
Two of our residents, Alex McNitt and Kara Heiser, trekked to Boca Chica, Texas, to see the SpaceX Starship’s inaugural launch up close. McNitt, an aerospace engineer and self-professed space nerd, booked a plane the night before the scheduled launch and drove through the night to South Padre Island just in time for the launch to be postponed. Best estimates released stated that SpaceX would need a minimum of 48 hours to prepare to launch again. Not one to waste time, Alex quickly negotiated with a local captain to go out on the bay kite-surfing, and then arranged for his girlfriend, Kara, to fly down to meet him at the launch site for the second take. The two spent time seeing the Falcon Heavy rocket up close and indulging in seaside Mexican cuisine before the 4:00 am wakeup to get a front-row seat to watch the 33-engine rocket make history.
Alex moved into TGO last March and spends his time in Florida as owner and manager of Medical Aesthetics, a clinic on Cheney specializing in injectables, microneedling, bodysculpting, and facials. He can be found carting around TGO when away from his home base in central Pennsylvania.

Let's Test Your World Knowledge...
Where is the world’s poorest city in the poorest country?
Kinshasa, Congo - It is the poorest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo which is also the poorest country in the world, at a GDP of $55 billion. Many of its residents live on less $1 a day.
Where is the world’s coldest place?
East Antarctic Plateau - On the high ridge of the East Antarctic Plateau the temperature can drop to as low as -135.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which was recorded in August, 2010.
Where is the world’s most populated city?
Shanghai - At a whopping 24,150,000 permanent inhabitants, Shanghai is the only city that is home to over 24 million people in one city.
Where is the world’s wealthiest city?
Tokyo, Japan - That tower might as well be made of gold since Tokyo tops the charts with a GDP of $1,520 billion, beating New York City by a mere $310 billion.
Where is the world’s least populated city?
Vatican City - With a paltry population of 842, the city-state of Vatican City is the smallest city and state in the world.
Where is the driest spot on Earth?
The Atacama Desert - The 600 miles of South America’s Atacama desert is recorded as the driest place on Earth, no contest This desert has an average of only 4 inches of rain every hundred years. Incredible, but true.
What is the most photographed place in the U.S.?
Surprise! The Guggenheim building in New York. Photos have always told stories, but in today’s world of cell phone cameras and social media, that story is relayed as data to companies who monitor everything we do. Geotagged data was culled by Sights map using a Google-based image sharing software, and can show us the most photographed places in the world, right down to this landmark. The strange winner is this building in New York City. Guess it impresses a lot of visitors.
30
Where is the wettest spot on Earth?
Mawsynram, India - In this city in India, it rains an average of 467.35 inches per year, and has a record of 1000 inches in 1985... much more than any rain forest!
What city claims to be the sunniest place in the U.S.?
Yuma, Arizona - In this city in Arizona, the sun shines for an average of 11 hours a day. The usual forecast is sun for 90 percent of the year, averaging a total of 4015 daylight hours each year.
Where is the world’s oldest city
Damascus - There’s quite a bit of controversy over which city gets to officially claim the title of “oldest continuously inhabited city.” However, Damascus is the safest bet, with evidence of civilization that extends back over 11,000 years.
Where is the most expensive city to live in?
Singapore - This city has recently beat out Tokyo, Japan, for the title of “most expensive city” for 2014. Cars can cost between 4-6 times as much in Singapore from what they cost in the US or UK (for example, a Toyota Prius actually costs about $150,000.00 there).
Where is the least expensive city to live in?
Mumbai, India - At the other end of the spectrum, Mumbai, India, is the cheapest place to live in the world, according to the Worldwide Cost of Living Index, 2014. For some comparison, a loaf of bread that would cost $3.36 in Singapore, would only cost $0.91 in Mumbai. A lot of poverty brings the cost of living down.
What country consumes the most food per capita?
The overweight United States - We eat an average of 3,770 calories a day each. Shamefully, obesity is becoming more of a problem every year.
Which is the youngest country in the world?

Let's Test Your World Knowledge...
Where is the world’s most energy efficient city?
Reykjavik, Iceland - All of the energy and heat used by the citizens of Reykjavik come from geothermal plants and renewable hydropower making it the most sustainable and energy efficient city in the world. This city has also been replacing traditional buses with hydrogen-fueled buses, from which the only emissions are water.
Which country has the longest life expectancy in the world?
Which country consumes the most caffeine in the world?

Which country in the world drinks the most alcohol?
Belarus - In the little country of Belarus, each person above the age of 16 drinks an average of 4.62 gallons of alcohol every year. That’s a lot of booze.
Monaco - According to the World Health Organization’s study from 2013, Monaco tops the charts for the longest living citizens with an average life expectancy of 87.2 years. Men in Monaco live an average 85.3 years, and women live to an average of 89 years.
Which country is the most bicycle friendly in the world?
The Netherlands - By comparing cities using the average number of bicycle trips made daily, one city reigns supreme: Groningen in the Netherlands. About 50 percent of the population commute via bike daily, making it the city with the greatest proportion of cyclists. However, many other cities in the Netherlands have a great bicycling tradition.

Sierra Leone - On the opposite side of that coin, the population of Sierra Leone live only to an average of 47 years. The men of Sierra Leone live to an average of 47 years old, whereas women live a little longer, an average of 48 years. Poverty plays a big roll in their short life expectancy.
Which foreign city is the world’s most well-connected one for internet use?
Seoul, South Korea - Surprisingly, despite China’s 618 million internet users who spend an average of 18.7 hours a week surfing the net, China didn’t even make the top 10 for internet connection. Seoul is a different story considering the average connection speed, availability, (including free access), openness to innovation, support of public data, and privacy/security, Seoul, South Korea is the champion of internet-connectedness. With 10,000 government supported free WiFi spots dotting the city, and an internet speed that goes unchallenged globally, Seoul is an internet junkie’s paradise.

Meet Irene Noden - "Reenie"
In issue #4 of the 2023 Motorcoach Living magazine, one of our residents was featured as the magazine’s Class A person. Irene Noden, known to her friends as Reenie, has lived in Hidden Lakes for several years. The article talks about Reenie’s National Park volunteer service and her joy of discovering the United States in her Class A Tiffi n Phaeton and her jeep, which she tows.
Reenie’s motto for life comes from her Dad, who told her, “Do every job as if it were a work of art to which you’d be proud to sign your name.” So, whether she’s learning a skill, like fl y fi shing, climbing or canyoneering, fl ying a plane, riding a motorcyle or volunteering as a host in a National Park, she gives it her all.
Reenie is also a member of the FMCA TGO Ambassadors chapter and enjoys traveling with them on their various trips.
Excerpts from the article...
Irene Noden felt empowered when she earned her pilot’s license, even more so when she started driving her own 800-pound touring Harley Davidson.“But driving down the road in a 50,000 pound vehicle towing a 7,000 pound vehicle and you’re all by yourself, and you see people looking over at you getting side-eyed? That’s pretty special.”
The 65-year-old RVer and former real estate agent known as Reenie by her RV friends just received her 4,000 hour pin for volunteering with the National Park Service. She earned the award for being camper host at such popular destinations as Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Mammoth Cave and Hot Springs national parks, fi rst with her husband Tom and after he passed away a couple of years ago, on her own.
And as empowering as it is to continue to drive her Class A Tiffi n Phaeton solo across the country, it’s even more rewarding to be of service. “I love assisting the visitors, answering questions, helping people fi gure out where to go. I spent 30 years as a real estate broker; that is a service industry. I delivered meals on wheels, and I worked for the American Red Cross. Tom and I were both members of the disaster assistance team. Volunteerism has always been there."
In the National Park service as well as Army Corps of Engineers, state parks and other spots with a hops camper, volunteers are troubleshooters, enforcement helpers, camp set-up assistants, travel agents, even mediators who work to balance, say, a backpacker’s desire to sleep under dark skies with another family’s love of their
twinkling light strands and boom boxes. Every day brings stories to tell, like when Noden had to cite a camper for having an unleashed chicken. While the all-pets-on-leash rule might seem silly with such an animal, consider, she says, that chickens could easily be transplanting invasive weeds.
For the host, the role sometimes comes both with an assured place to camp for a few weeks to a few months and personal immersion in some of the world’s most beautiful parks, trails, canyons and beaches. Along the way, she’s learned to fl y fi sh, climb and go canyoneering while also perfecting the art of hauling a jeep behind her RV with a Blue Ox tow bar system. And she’s spotted plenty of wildlife, from the “could do without” skunks and tarantulas to brilliant indigo buntings and scarlet tanagers, a munching moose, some fat marmots, endangered prairie dogs and bioluminescent bays.
“Each day brings new fun adventures, challenges and rewards as park visitors get needed help, learn new facts and begin to realize the big picture,” she said. “Our national parks are our national treasures, and I consider it my privilege, pleasure and responsibility to help programs that give access to the most beautiful spots on earth.”

Funny Thing Is… Moms Can Do Anything!
There is only one profession whose members can do everything required to sustain the life of a human being. Mothers. Yes, for all my macho brothers out there, it's time to face the facts. Motherhood is the most prolific profession on earth. Moms cook, they clean, they teach and they nurture, but they're also judges, investigators, police, chauffeurs, psychologists, and, on occasion plumbers, electricians, auto mechanics and doctors. Now I'm not speaking of the college degreed professionals here, but the instincts of a parent whose only job is to keep their children from committing hara-kiri on a daily basis until they're old enough to know that running full speed into a wall or diving off a couch head first may hurt. For most families that means until they leave for college. For example, mom the policewoman has to talk her kid down from the top of the couch before he jumps. If he jumps, mom the doctor has to fix whatever bodily damage occurs while mom the psychologist has to convince them it doesn't hurt by promising cake or something sweet made by mom the cook. Then, mom the investigator has to find out who convinced junior to jump in the first place after which mom the judge has to impose sentence known as grounding or time out. Did you ever wonder what moms of famous people must have said to their kids? Like Michelangelo's mom, ''Why can't you paint on the walls like all the other kids?;" Or Albert Einstein's mom saying, "What do you mean you used the hairbrush I gave you to invent static electricity?;" And finally, what do some famous people say about motherhood? Phyllis Diller said, "I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them." Buddy Hackett says, “My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: "Take it or leave it.” Rodney Dangerfield said about his mom, "My mother had morning sickness after I was born;" and Milton Berle adds, "If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?" Amen, Uncle Miltie. Happy Mother's Day to all moms! - Sammy-

Welcome To Our Brand New Bingo System!
The Activities Committee and membership approved the expenditure to replace the current bingo system and asked the team of Bill Severence, Bob Wilcox and Pat Small to research bingo systems. The team recommended the purchase of a system produced by Video King located in Tampa.
This research, which started in January of 2023, included visiting other bingo halls, speaking with several vendors and sampling some demos systems. Our hall is unique, in that it is used for many events including banquets, socials, exercise and live concerts. As a result, some of the systems were not suitable for our hall.
The bingo flashboard was mounted on the back wall of the manor and was quite an eyesore. In addition, three small monitors were used to display the live image of the next ball to be called. Even though a drop down screen was installed to cover the flashboard, the wall never looked great for weddings and banquets. The new system uses multiple large screen TVs to replace the traditional Bingo Flashboard and looks very modern and provides our bingo players with a flashy new look.
Bill did a tremendous amount of research, picking out the best TVs, the perfect mounting system and several other components. Our CSA team of Guy Sampson and John Hardy provided the manpower to route wiring through the manor walls to provide a clean install. Bill and Bob completed the wiring and tested the connections to insure everything would be working before the Bingo Console was delivered.
Next, Guy and John removed all the old bingo equipment from the manor back wall, patched the holes and repainted. All of the work had to be completed around the Manor’s normal activities, including a well attended board meeting regarding alligators and a high school prom.
Bill and Bob then prepared the mounting system; measuring once, twice, three times and once more for good measure. The final step in setting up the wall was to hang the mounting board, mount the brackets and finally hang the TVs.
It was a team effort including Cory, Alex and Gage (Manor Staff), Guy and John (Maintenance) and volunteers, Larry Marole, Bob Wilcox and Bill Severance.
Video King programmed approximately 50 games into the console based on the TGO Bingo Committee’s instructions. Additional games will also be entered in the future by either Video King or one of our computer savvy volunteers. Shown to the right is the crew preparing for the three tvs on the back wall, the projector’s display on the front wall and the new bingo console.

FMCA Rally - Grassy Key Rolling Rally
April 18-30, 2023 - 12 Nights
TY Park, Grassy Key Resort and back to TY Park.
On this rally we celebrated Bill Johnson’s birthday and Dennis and Eileen Lecik’s anniversary. We shared the experience of the Jungle Queen Cruise in Ft. Lauderdale, which took us through Millionaire’s Row and the homes of the rich and famous, along with spectacular mega yachts, and all the history of Ft. Lauderdale’s New River.
Grassy Key RV Resort - We visited the Turtle Hospital, the Dolphin Center, Aquarium and Islamorada. We did the Pigeon Key Island two-hour tour, located off 7 Mile Bridge. Our conductor took us back in time to 1890, during the time of Henry Flagler, and we learned how Pigeon Key Island evolved over the last 100 years.
The TGO Ambassadors, after eight years of trying to do a Sunset Cruise at Key West, were finally able to experience it at Marathon Key. Our two-hour Sunset Cruise had music, and all the champagne and light snacks you could consume. Thanks to Gary Bonneau and the Captain of the Mermaid Cruise, some of us watched the sun set perfectly into the water and reflect the green light flash phenomenon. Of course, it might have been due to the champagne and dancing.
We spent the day at Key West on Duval Street enjoying Sloppy Joe's, Hog's Breath, Margaritaville and Mallory Square, where you can gather to see the entertainment and sunset.
As a group we shared three dinners; the Crab House, Hard Rock Casino and The Irish Pub, and two lunches at Il Mulino and Margaritaville, in Ft. Lauderdale and Hollywood.
In Grassy Key we shared one breakfast at the Sunset Grill, two dinners at Island Fish Co. and Havana Jack, and one pork tenderloin dinner put on by Hosts Gary and Teri Henry and Co-hosts Mike Lodge and Linda Utz-Lodge in the club house.
Along with the above we had eight breakfast snacks at the host site and eight socials at the host site or tiki bar. We played nickel bingo in the club house and Jenga under the tiki bar while watching the sunsets.
