Manager’s Corner

May 26, 2023

Dear TGO Community,

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. This Monday is the day we pause to remember those who courageously gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy every day. I extend a special Thank You to our many TGO veterans who have served and sacrificed for our liberty. Chuck and the golf shop team will host our annual Memorial Day golf tournament on Monday, and Blue Heron will serve grilled hamburgers and hotdogs beginning at 12:30 pm outdoors next to the Golf Shop. The CSA and Recreation office are closed on Monday in recognition of the holiday.

The CSA Office is working on a new software application that will soon allow you to access your account information and manage your payments online. More information will be shared with you when the system is ready to go live in the upcoming weeks. If you are currently signed up for auto-debit or ACH of your quarterly assessments, you may receive an email message soon that says, “A new payment method has been added to your account." This is part of the switch to the new system.

Last week the Board voted to restrict walking of pets on our paved roads from a moving vehicle. The new rule reads: “Pets may not be exercised from leashes or other tethers extending from a moving vehicle whether the leash or tether is held by a passenger in the Vehicle or attached to the Vehicle itself on paved roads. Bicycles and tricycles are excluded if they are equipped with a commercially available safety device for walking pets.” Our roads don’t have sidewalks. The intention of this rule is to keep everyone on the roads safe, including pedestrians, cyclists, golf carts, and motor vehicles. Those who choose not to follow this new rule will be issued a violation and a $50 fine. We will issue only warnings for the next 30 days to ensure all residents are aware of the new rule before enforcement begins. CSA recognizes there are people in our community who need to exercise their pets from a golf cart or bicycle. This activity is permitted on the Doggie Walk trail as there are no motor vehicles allowed on this trail. This trail begins at Doggie World and ends at Buck Lake. CSA is committed to maintaining and improving this trail and its shoulders for dog walking activity. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Thursday, June 1 begins Hurricane Season. Although the storm season typically starts off slowly, there is no telling yet what August, September and October will bring us this year. This is a good time to think about a hurricane plan for you and your Florida home. We are finalizing drainage projects now in preparation for an unpredictable storm season.

It makes me very happy and proud when our CSA crews identify new and efficient ways to solve old problems. This issue of The Happenings features an article describing a new solution to repairing potable water low-flow issues. I want to recognize maintenance manager Jordan Bullard and Utilities Supervisor Jonathan Lyerly for researching the new "Jelly Bean Pump" solution. Read about it on Page 35 of this issue.

It certainly feels like summer in Florida now. School has ended for the summer, and my family and I are looking forward to some vacation time the first week of June. Many of our summer improvement projects are in high gear now. We are making good progress on the Hobbyland exterior renovation. Our pool chairs and lounges are out for re-strapping. Our Mail Center has received a new carport this week to keep our mail and staff dry during the rainy season. Our road resurfacing project is now scheduled to begin on June 12. Chairman Cliff Creech and I will continue to keep you posted on our community improvements throughout the summer.

Sincerely,

3

“When it comes to men's golf, you enter a world where grown men transform into intense warriors armed with fancy clubs and questionable fashion choices. They meticulously analyze every swing, as if solving the mysteries of the universe depended on sinking a tiny white ball into an even tinier hole. The golf course becomes their battlefield, where they navigate treacherous hazards, battle unruly sand traps, and occasionally unleash a victory dance that could rival any touchdown celebration.” - Anonymous -

Meet John Hamilton

John has been a fixture at the TGO Golf Pro Shop for nearly 15 years and is currently one of the part time employees. We spent some time with John to find out a bit more about his previous life and how he came about living in TGO.

for a mail room manager. I interviewed, got the job and worked there for 10 years, until I retired."

This was when Pat, who was working with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, received a job offer for Vice President of Disease Management in Nashville. She took that job and they moved to Nashville. If you know John, you know he always has to be active - and he was bored, so he took up the fiddle and eventually became a line dancer for the Grand Ol' Opry... NO, we just made that part up! He did get bored though, and went to work as a volunteer for the Red Cross the next 10 years. Then in 2008, when the economy took a dive, Pat was laid off from her job and they decided to move back to TGO full time.

When John interacts with new players, he always tells them when he checks them in that there are only two rules: One, have a good time, and two...

Once back at TGO, you guessed it, John was bored, so he went to work at the golf shop. "I’ve been working at the golf shop for quite a while. I’ve worked with Laurie, Mike, Brant, and now Chuck. In fact, I was on the committee to hire Chuck."

After retiring from Royal Caribbean, John and his wife, Pat, relocated from Miami to Nashville. While looking for a place to stay while visiting friends in Melbourne, they discovered The Great Outdoors. They had a fifth-wheel at the time and rented a place on Oak Cove. After exploring the park and the Titusville area, they decided to purchase on Oak Cove for about six months before purchasing a port on Plantation, where they lived for 14 years. Eventually, Pat expressed a desire for a house and they purchased a home on Fairways.

John was born in Georgia, and when his dad retired from the Navy, they moved to Miami when John was four years old.

He joined the Army at an early age and served six years in the service before he went to work for Eastern Airlines. "I worked there for 25 years as the manager of the mailing service, and when Eastern went under, I had a friend in HR at Royal Caribbean tell me they were looking

John has been a Jack-of-all trades over the years at the shop and has done most everything there, and now he mainly takes care of the inside employees scheduling, while Jeff Smutek heads up the outside employees schedules. "We’ve got a great crew working here. Everyone gets along very well."

When John interacts with new players, he always tells them when he checks them in that there are only two rules: One, have a good time, and two, my house is on hole 12, it’s brown with a hot air balloon twirly - don’t hit it! And if you do hit it, I’ll sic my large (hands go from wide to small) Boston Terrier on you!

John and Pat have been married for 36 years and have always camped from the beginning of their relationship. They started out tent camping, moved up to a pop-up, then a trailer, a fifth-wheel and finally a motor home. They traveled the U.S. from coast to coast and just recently sold their RV. They plan to start cruising again with an upcoming cruise to Alaska in July.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guidelines For Tenant Registration By Owners

1. All tenants must be registered with the CSA Office in order to be entered into the Gatehouse System.

If you are leasing your property or if you are letting a guest use your property in your absence, they need to be registered with the CSA Office.

2. Why do they need to be registered? There are several reasons why:

a. If your tenant wants to call in a visitor and the tenant is not registered as residing within TGO, then the visitor will not be allowed entrance because as far as the Security Officer knows, the tenant doesn’t reside at TGO.

b. If the tenant is not registered and there is an emergency situation where the tenant needs to be notified, the CSA would be unable to contact them because they are not registered and we will not know how to contact the tenant.

c. If your tenant wants to receive mail (UPS/FedEx/Priority Mail/medicine), the mail will not be accepted at the Mail Facility because they are not registered as living at TGO.

3. What information does the CSA Office need?

a. Tenant Name(s)

b. TGO Address

c. Dates of Arrival/Departure

d. Phone number

e. E-mail Address (optional)

4. Your tenant must get a gate pass from the Guard Gate. The tenant may stop by the CSA Office to get maps, pool wrist bands, TV channel line-up, “The Happenings” newsletter, etc. Also, if the guest extends their stay, or departs early, their gate pass expiration date must also be updated. You, the owner, must notify the CSA Office beforehand to have these changes made or the tenant will automatically be removed from the system along with any other applicable information.

A New Rule Regarding Walking Your Pets

Pets (service animals are not considered pets) may not be exercised from leashes or other tethers extending from a moving vehicle whether the leash or tether is held by a passenger in the Vehicle or attached to the Vehicle itself on paved roads. Bicycles and tricycles are excluded if they are equipped with a commercially available safety device for walking pets.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

• For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434 .

These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Thunder and Lightning in TGO by Ed

As residents of TGO, you are well aware of our proximity to Lightning Displays and Strikes during the past month. They are the reason that our Florida is “The Lightning Capital of the US.” But get this: The town of Bithlo, 15 miles west of us, on State Road 50, is “The Lightning Capital of Florida.” Yes, it is a scientific fact, but it should be reassuring to us in TGO that residents of Bithlo are not being electrocuted! Lightning, and the thunder that follows, are surely attention getters, except in rare cases. The odds of being struck by lightning are indeed rare! Only about 3% of those strikes result in a fatality.

So, what is lightning? Lightning is the visual result of a static electrical charge that builds up as updrafts of wind carry charged particles into the atmosphere, to collect in clouds. These electrical charges may have been on trees, grass, cars, piles of dirt, even your hair. The static electrical charges want to return to earth or a nearby cloud. When they jump, they produce an electrical spark (lightning). That lightning spark super-heats the surrounding air to produce a clap of thunder! The voltage of a lightning strike can be over 3,000 volts. The temperature can exceed that of the surface of the Sun. The odds of being struck by lightning are slim: only 27 people per year in the US. Only about 3% result in fatalities!

A good place of refuge in a lightning storm would be inside your car - Hardtop Only! Or inside your home. Avoid standing under trees. Don’t go in the water! Don’t grab a chain link fence, or stand in an open field! Get down off that aluminum ladder. This would be an inappropriate time for gutter or roof inspection!

Of far more practical concern is what a lightning strike can do to your electronics. It can ”fry” your computer or your TV. When a lightning storm is imminent, TURN OFF, UNPLUG and TAKE COVER INDOORS!

On a somber note, we say farewell to Firewise Committee Member and our Emergency Radio Skills Instructor: SHARON MALONEY. Thanks, Sharon, and SAFE TRAVELS !

The Connection Between our President's Military Service and our National Parks

Throughout American history, several presidents have donned military uniforms and served their country with distinction. These leaders also developed a deep connection to the nation's natural wonders and played a significant role in the establishment and preservation of National Parks.

Ulysses S. Grant: Designating our first National Park

Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, played a significant role in the establishment of Yellowstone National Park. In 1872, Grant signed the legislation that officially designated Yellowstone as the first national park in the world. Grant's support for the park was based on his appreciation for the region's natural beauty and his desire to preserve it for future generations. His action paved the way for the conservation efforts that followed and the creation of the National Park System.

Theodore Roosevelt: The Conservationist President President Theodore Roosevelt, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the conservation movement. Inspired by his experiences in the military and his love for the outdoors, Roosevelt championed the preservation of America's natural heritage. During his presidency, he established five national parks, including Crater Lake, Wind Cave, and Mesa Verde, expanding the idea of protected areas beyond just Yellowstone and Yosemite.

Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Preservation

As the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during World War II, President Dwight D. Eisenhower understood the significance of preserving national treasures, leading to the establishment of several national parks and protected areas during his presidency. He signed the legislation that created Alaska's Denali National Park and Preserve, expanded the Everglades National Park, and protected significant areas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Jimmy Carter: Conservation Diplomacy

President Jimmy Carter, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a former naval officer, brought his passion for conservation and diplomacy to the presidency. He signed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which added millions of acres to the National Park System.

George H.W. Bush: Protecting the Coastal Beauty President George H.W. Bush, a decorated Navy pilot during World War II, recognized the importance of preserving the nation's coastal environments. Bush signed the Coastal Barrier Resources Act, which restricted federal spending in designated coastal areas to preserve their natural features. Additionally, he expanded the national park system by designating several new protected areas, including the Cape Cod National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Chain Of Lakes Park - Hike or Bike!

Buffering a green ribbon of Indian River Lagoon shoreline from US 1, Chain of Lakes Park provides a chain of four paved loop trails nearly four miles long, which offers dozens of ways to put together a walk through the wetlands.

With the Florida East Coast Railroad forming a barrier, this 92-acre park has no waterfront on the lagoon. But, it has plenty of fresh water waterfront, busy with birds, thanks to the lakes. The park offers a gradient from groomed to wild, with ballfields on its US 1 side and natural wetlands between its man-made “lakes” and the lagoon. These serve as stormwater filtration as water flows through mangrove forests and willow marshes to the east. You get a nice overview of those marshes from the park’s tall observation tower.

The four linked loops, with bridges and natural paths interconnecting them, enable you to scale your hike to any distance from a half mile on up. Thanks to the park’s direct access via bike path to the Brevard Coast to Coast Trail / East Coast Greenway, it serves as a trailhead for cyclists along that linear bike path paralleling US 1.

Route

Since the trails are open to both hiking and biking, we’ve tackled them in a multitude of configurations and for distances up to 9 miles by repeating loops.

On a bike, breezing through the northern ballfields counterclockwise is a good way to start. By foot, we prefer diving into the wooded footpath off the main parking area. It is not accessible. Walk around the gate and follow the palm-shaded path to a T intersection. Turn left. Go straight ahead at the next junction down a corridor of tropical forest blocking the ballfields from view. When that long, straight (and seasonally buggy) path meets the paved upper loop, turn right. This starts your clockwise trek around the park.

The climb is well worth it for the view. It sweeps across the lagoon to Merritt Island and up towards the NASA satellite tracking station north of Haulover Canal.

As the trail detaches from the northern boundary of the park to follow the curve of the lake, notice a dense forest of white mangroves forms a boundary on the left. Pass

a sun-drenched bench. At 0.7 mile, the first bridge you come to leads back to that wooded corridor you walked in on, enabling a quick, scenic 0.9 mile loop back to the parking area.

To stay with the outer loop, continue past it to a weir. A boardwalk provides elevation over the weir, which can be crossed when dry. Flocks of ibis often gather in this area, and alligators cruise in the open water and nestle along the shoreline. Pass another bench in this stretch. When the trail curves east, the observation tower comes into view. At 0.9 miles, you reach the tower. The climb is well worth it for the view. It sweeps across the lagoon to Merritt Island and up towards the NASA satellite tracking station north of Haulover Canal.

Beyond the tower, the next weir and boardwalk is along a willow marsh. We’ve caught alligators sunning on the concrete, so we take the boardwalk here. This weir is just shy of the bridge defining the second loop in the Chain of Lakes, which crosses a narrow point at 1.1 miles.

26
92 acres to explore on foot or by bike.

A return to your car up the lake-hugging route from this point nets a 1.6 mile hike. Our walk stays on the east side of the lakes, not crossing the bridge.

The long straightaway that follows, bordered by waterway and forest, is where we’ve encountered a lot of limpkins. Herons are also commonplace throughout the park. At the next curve, the third weir comes into view, another area where we’ve seen alligators along the shoreline. Follow the boardwalk around, with the south end of the lake and the hospital beyond it coming into view. At 1.5 miles, the trail reaches its curve around the south end of the lake. But there’s another, hidden loop.

Use the path towards Grove Road ahead and turn left to follow the bike path that parallels the road past a homestead. Grove Road ends, but the path makes a sharp right and keeps going, right up to another weir. The trees here are much taller, the feel more tropical. Cross the weir and continue southbound, paralleling the railroad and the woods, before the trail makes a sharp right. Do not cross the weir ahead. Follow the undulating path between the trees. This final pond has a fountain in it, which always forms a rainbow in the sunshine. Arcing around the pond you come to a side path to the hospital and a picnic shelter and restroom at 2.1 miles. Continue along the Rainbow Pond, and a short bridge takes you across the canal. The trail jogs left and then cuts through the woods. It emerges at Grove Road.

Middle: One of the many bridges throughout the park.

Bottom: These Fulvous Whistling ducks are just some of the wildlife you may encounter during your walk.

27
Top: The beautiful view of the lakes from the park’s tall observation tower.

Chain Of Lakes - Hike or Bike

Turn right, and you will see where you joined this fourth loop at the south end of the third pond. Cross Grove Road to start your way up the west side of the Chain of Lakes.

Walking up the west side of the lakes, the grassy expanse to your left is far less interesting than watching the waterway on your right. By 2.8 miles, you reach the bridge at the north end of the third lake. Turn left here onto an unpaved path, which leads due west before it swings north over a culvert. A ribbon of cabbage palm hammock fronts the lake on the right, with the ballfields to the left. The trail forks at 3 miles. Follow the path to the right to the edge of the lake. A small fishing pier provides a place to pause and watch wildlife. Beyond it, the trail curves away from the lake around a retention pond.

Watch for the bridge on the right and cross it. The T intersection on its far side is your final decision point for this hike. If you turn right, you are back in the woods again, and can return to your car via the next left for a 3.3 mile hike. Turning left lets you complete the perimeter of the north loop. Follow the path out to the entrance road and turn right on the road into the parking area. Continue through the parking area and due north between the ballfields, passing the concession stands. By 3.5 miles you’re at the northern parking lot. Follow the curve of the trail east along the park’s perimeter, paralleling Jay Jay Rd and the soccer field. When you come to the wooded corridor just past the field, turn right. Continue along this route you came in on. Make that final right out to the parking area, walking around the gate, to wrap a 3.9 mile hike.

• Phone: 321-264-5105

• Length: 3.9 miles in four loops

• Fees: Free

Playgrounds are located closest to the park’s entrance road, as are the ballfields. Numerous benches are provided around the loops but none are shaded.

From TGO, take Hwy 50 to SR 405 (Garden Street) east to US 1 northbound. Continue 2.5 miles north, passing Parrish Medical Center and Eastern Florida State College on the right before you reach the traffic light for Dairy Rd / Truman Scarborough Way. This light serves as the crossing point for cyclists heading to the Florida Coast to Coast Trail on the west side of US 1. Turn right and follow the road into the park. The largest parking area is the second left along this road.

Exploring the Rich History of the Warbird Air Museum

We could fill up an entire issue sharing everything you will see at the Warbird Air Museum located right here in Titusville. This museum is a testament to aviation history and the heroes who shaped it. It is a journey through time, showcasing an impressive collection of vintage warbirds and vast array of artifacts with noteworthy exhibits, and the extraordinary aircraft that grace its halls.

The Warbird Air Museum was founded in 1996 by a passionate group of aviation enthusiasts with a shared love for preserving and honoring military aviation history. The museum's inception was inspired by the desire to educate the public about the sacrifices made by brave men and women who served their country. It serves as a living tribute to the pilots, mechanics, and other aviation professionals who played pivotal roles during times of conflict.

The Warbird Air Museum boasts a remarkable collection of restored vintage warplanes from as far back as Pre War and World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Modern Day aircraft. Here are just some of the notable exhibits and aircraft that you can expect to encounter during your visit:

1917 Fokker Dr. 1 (Replica)

Produced in 1917, this aircraft holds a legendary status in aviation history, forever linked to the iconic figure, the Red Baron. (Yes... that Red Baron that Snoopy, using his doghouse as his "Sopwith Camel" fighter plane, imagined endless battles in the skies above Germany).

Designed by Dutch engineer Anthony Fokker, this nimble triplane became synonymous with German air power during World War I. The Fokker Dr. 1's distinctive crimson paint scheme earned it the nickname "Red Baron," thanks to its most famous pilot, Manfred von Richthofen. The aircraft's remarkable agility and climbing ability allowed the Red Baron to dominate the skies, tallying up an impressive 80 aerial victories. The Fokker's legacy as a symbol of aviation excellence and the daring exploits of its celebrated pilot live on to this day.

B-25 Mitchell

The B-25 Mitchell bomber is a prominent feature at the museum. This medium bomber played a vital role in numerous campaigns during World War II, including the famous Doolittle Raid. The B-25's versatility and reliability made it a favorite among crews and helped establish its reputation as a workhorse of the skies. Introduced in 1941, they were in service for over four decades. Today, just over 100 B-25 Mitchells are left intact, but only 45 of the 10,000 produced are airworthy.

1942 C-47 Tico Belle

The “Tico Belle” is a remarkable flying memorial to the men who flew her, and flew into combat in her. On June 5, 1944, Tico Belle flew as part of the 82nd Airborne division’s aerial assault on Hitler’s “Festung Europa” (Fortress Europe) as well as fighting on D-Day. This particular Douglas C-47 was manufactured in 1942 and still flies to this day. It served as a pivotal piece of the allied forces’ defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.

30

Messerschmitt ME-208 Nord Noralpha

The Nord 1100 Noralpha is a remarkable aircraft designed and manufactured by the French company Nord Aviation. Known for their nose-mounted engine, enclosed cabin, and low-wing design, they served in occupied France until the country was ultimately liberated. The aircraft was able to reach speeds of up to 189 mph and had a wingspan of 37 feet, 8 inches. The aircraft's versatility is evident in its ability to fulfill various roles, including aerial surveying, training, and even light cargo transportation. With its robust construction and reliable performance, the Nord 1100 Noralpha has become an iconic aircraft, admired for its elegance and effectiveness in the skies.

The Grumman F-11 Tiger

Introduced in 1954, the F-11 Tiger was a supersonic carrier-based fighter aircraft developed for the United States Navy. With its sleek design and powerful performance, the F-11 Tiger became a prominent fighter in the 1950s. It featured swept wings, an afterburning engine, and a radar-equipped nose cone, enabling it to fly at high speeds and engage targets effectively.

The F11F/F-11 Tiger possessed exceptional maneuverability and proved its capabilities in both air-to-air and ground attack roles. It was armed with four 20mm cannons and could carry a variety of rockets, missiles, and bombs. Notably, the Tiger became the first aircraft to successfully intercept another aircraft at supersonic speeds during test flights. It was also used by the Blue Angels flight team from 1957–1969. Grumman Aircraft Corporation made 200 Tigers, with the last aircraft being delivered to the U.S. Navy on 23 January 1959.

1930's N2S-Stearman

Also known by the name Kydet, The 1930's N2S-Stearman, also known as the Stearman Model 75, was a classic biplane trainer aircraft that played a crucial role in aviation history. Designed and built by the Stearman Aircraft Company, it served as a primary training aircraft for the United States military during World War II and beyond. With its distinctive open cockpit, sturdy construction, and reliable performance, the N2S-Stearman quickly became an icon of aviation training. Pilots who trained on this air-

craft fondly remember the exhilaration of flying in its agile and responsive nature. Its simple yet effective design, featuring a large radial engine and a robust airframe, made it ideal for teaching aspiring pilots the fundamentals of flight. After the war ended, these became popular for civilian use because they could also dust crops and perform aerial acrobatics. Continued...

1945 North American XP-82 Twin Mustang

One of the more popular planes on display, this Twin Mustang was a unique and exceptional aircraft that emerged during the final stages of World War II. The XP-82 was essentially two P-51 Mustangs fused together, sharing a central wing and tail assembly. Designed initially as escort fighters during World War II, Twin Mustangs were some of the first aircraft to serve in the Korean War. The first three Korean aircrafts destroyed during the war were gunned down by this fantastic piece of aviation history. It is also the last piston-engine fighter ordered by the US Air Force. Equipped with two engines, each with its own cockpit. Both of the cockpits are able to control the aircraft, each has its own individual controls and gauges. The aircraft boasted impressive speed and performance, capable of reaching speeds of well over 400 miles per hour. Its range and firepower made it a formidable adversary, with six .50 caliber machine guns and the ability to carry a variety of bombs and rockets. The Twin Mustang displayed at the Warbird Air Museum is a prototype version - XP-82 - and is powered by a pair of Rolls Royce Merlin Engines restored in Douglas, Georgia, by Tom Reilly and his restoration team. This is the only flying XP-82 Twin Mustang in the world.

The Warbird Air Museum is dedicated to providing an immersive experience for visitors of all ages. Beyond the aircraft and exhibits, the museum offers interactive displays, flight simulators, and educational programs that engage and educate visitors about the fascinating world of military aviation. Volunteers and knowledgeable staff members are always on hand to answer questions and share captivating stories from the past.

The museum frequently participates in air shows, community events, and educational initiatives, aiming to inspire the next generation of aviators and history enthusiasts. The Warbird Air Museum actively collaborates with schools and youth organizations, offering educational programs that highlight the significance of aviation history and its connection to the world we live in today. Its captivating exhibits, restored vintage warplanes, and educational outreach efforts make it a must-visit destination for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

It's All About The Flow...

As editors, one benefit (among many) is you get to see and learn a lot of different things - and here's another one we just added to our growing list. You never know how important the water flow to your house or on your RV lot is until... it doesn't!

Poor water flow (not to be confused with poor water pressure) can be a common problem here in TGO. The biggest culprit is not exercising the water to your lot/home enough - flushing toilets, running showers, using the dishwater, etc. All things that need to be done on a regular basis to help maintain a proper water flow.

If you have an RV lot, home or rental property that stays vacant for periods of time, chances are it is already collecting sediment in the main line, and that is what directly affects the water flow. It builds up over time and then one day the flow becomes a trickle, and that's when the CSA Utilities Crew comes to the rescue!

For years they used an older process to unplug these pipes. It was expensive and time consuming, but now they have a new system that cuts the time down from what could be two days to less than two hours - sometimes one hour. This new system is a savings for all of us and allows our CSA crew to work on more preventative projects with their additional time.

What is this miraculous system called? How does it work? Let us introduce you to The Jelly Bean Pump!

We had an opportunity to go out with the CSA Utilities Crew to see just exactly how this new device works. It's really pretty simple. They disconnect the main line close to your main turn-off valve. They bring out the Jelly Bean Pump and connect it to the mainline and they pump water into the line towards the direction of the street - where 99% of the sediment/clogs are.

BUT HERE'S THE TRICK... before they hook the hose up, they stuff it with a paper plug then drop in 8 or 9 Jelly Beans (YES... Jelly Beans just like the kind you eat at Easter), then another paper plug on top of that. (FYI... the CSA guys prefer the Starburst brand).

The pump is manually operated by siphoning water from a large bucket. The pressure builds up in the line until the Jelly Bean and paper wad blows out the obstruction, instantly allowing more water flow.

So let's recap... this is a great new tool for our Utilities Crew. It saves LOTS of time and money as they no longer have to provide additional pipe or parts for a tedious, old school repair. It cuts down on a lot of trenching and the disruption that can occur to your lawn or garden with the older process.

Thanks to all of the CSA Crews - you are the best!

35
The Jelly Bean system means less disruption of the property. Josh Faiga loads the Jelly Bean Wad into the hose that connects to the pump. Jonathan Lyerly then hooks the hose to the mainline. The pump is connected, siphoning hose is in place, and the pumping by hand begins. It took about five minutes of pumping before the Jelly Bean Wad dislodged the clog. Jordan Bullard, Josh and Jonathan all deserve a large "S" on their chests.

Funny Thing Is… Only At Walmart!

Just when I thought I had seen everything at Walmart, the following happened. I call this one, “When 60 or More Equals 20 or Less.”

I had run into the store to buy one gallon of milk. ONE item. I got into the only 20 items or less checkout line open in the entire store. There stood a gentleman in front of me with somewhere between 60-70 items, but don’t get ahead of me because, despite the dopey look on his face and the earbuds in his ears making him oblivious to the remarks of my fellow shoppers, he actually did something darkly brilliant. This guy had the cashier count out 20 items, then paid her cash for them, then count 20 more, then paid for them, ditto, then ditto again. I started getting upset but wait, it gets better. He finally got to the last ten items, two of which were open top boxes. The cashier rang up the first eight items but when she got to the open top boxes, she began to take these little cans of cat food or something out ONE can at a time. She had to ring up each can separately until she finished the 30 in the first box. I started to chuckle but wait, there’s even more. She looked in the other box, looked at me and rolled her eyes and began to ring up another 30 cans. I couldn’t contain myself. I looked away and started one of those unstoppable laughs that no matter what anyone said or did I couldn’t stop. The other 20 or so people in line didn’t think it was so funny, but this guy was killing me. While watching him happily stroll off I wondered if he was incredibly stupid or brilliant. Maybe a little of both, but he sure taught me a lesson. I learned that 60 or more CAN equal 20 or less.

Post tax-season greetings to everyone! We made it through yet another year. Well wishes and many thanks to everyone who gave me the opportunity to prepare your tax returns.
I am honored to have so many here in the community entrust me to perform this important service. I appreciate your business and business was robust this year, all of it… thanks to you!

Memorial Day Honoring the Past and Remembering Their Sacrifices

Memorial Day is a significant observance in the United States, marked by remembrance and gratitude for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces. This article delves into the rich history of Memorial Day, exploring its origins, evolution, and the meaningful customs associated with this solemn national holiday.

Origins of Memorial Day

The origins of Memorial Day can be traced back to the aftermath of the American Civil War. In the spring of 1865, as the war drew to a close, people across the nation began organizing various commemorative events to honor the fallen soldiers. One such event took place in Charleston, South Carolina, where freed African American slaves exhumed the bodies of Union soldiers from a makeshift prison grave and gave them a proper burial with great reverence. This act of remembrance and respect for those who fought for their freedom is often considered the earliest precursor to Memorial Day.

Evolution and National Recognition

In the years following the Civil War, various communities and states held their own observances to remember fallen soldiers. However, it was not until 1868 that General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, declared May 30th as Decoration Day, a nationwide day of remembrance. The name "Decoration Day" reflected the tradition of decorating soldiers' graves with flowers and flags. It wasn't until 1971 that Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May, allowing for a three-day weekend of remembrance.

Interesting Facts about Memorial Day

Arlington National Cemetery: One of the most iconic locations associated with Memorial Day is Arlington National

Cemetery. Originally the estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, it was transformed into a military cemetery during the Civil War. Today, it serves as the final resting place for over 400,000 veterans and their families.

Poppy Flower: Inspired by the famous World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," the red poppy flower became a symbol of remembrance. This tradition was popularized by Moina Michael, an American teacher, who campaigned to adopt the poppy as a symbol of Memorial Day.

National Moment of Remembrance: In 2000, Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance, which asks Americans to pause for one minute at 3:00 pm local time on Memorial Day to honor and remember the sacrifices made by those in the military.

Unofficial Start of Summer: Memorial Day is often regarded as the unofficial start of the summer season in the United States. It is marked by barbecues, picnics, parades, and various outdoor activities, as families and friends come together to enjoy the long weekend.

Wreath-Laying Ceremony: Every Memorial Day, the President of the United States or a high-ranking government official lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. This solemn ceremony pays tribute to all the unidentified soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day stands as a poignant reminder of the courage, selflessness, and sacrifice displayed by the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country.

Please
remember... freedom isn't free

Memorial Day is a holiday to honor troops who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Often confused or conflated with Veterans Day or Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day is not just to commemorate those fallen in combat, but is also considered the unofficial kickoff to summer. There is much more to Memorial Day than barbecues and American flags. These Memorial Day trivia questions and answers will help you know more about this solemn holiday.
