TGO Golf Course Renovation - 2024
Eight months and counting until the renovation of our golf course begins. It's actually already underway as our Golf Pro, Chuck Kandt, and Greens Supervisor, Shane Willey, along with Chairman, Cliff Creech, and CSA Manager, Billy Specht, are currently engaging in meetings with the architect, contractors and material suppliers. Orders are being placed, construction phases are being scheduled and, if all goes well, we'll have another award-winning course ready to play before year's end, 2024. For a projected schedule of events, slice your way to the middle spread.
Tomoka State Park
Just north of TGO, about an hour's drive, lies a hidden gem called Tomoka State Park. If you enjoy the outdoors, you'll want to make time to visit this park. With a rich history dating back to the early 1700s, it offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. Hiking, biking, and canoeing are among the top outdoor activities you may enjoy here. If you're a birdwatcher, you'll be thrilled to discover over 160 bird species have been spotted in the park. There is the Tomoka Outpost where you can buy souvenirs, snacks and a cold drink. When it's time to relax, work your way over to the RiverGrill for an adult beverage and a delicious meal. More on page 30....
Summertime in TGO
While most of you are out enjoying the weather in a different state, a lot of us stay here at TGO and soak up the summer rays. But there is a lot more here than a heat index of 109; summer is when mother nature is still pretty busy. The fledglings are getting ready to leave their nests, there are turtles everywhere, the wild flowers are sprouting out on the trails. There are less people in the park and there are a lot more deer. Our very own Earth Mother, Betty Salter, checks in with her list of the favorite things she loves about summertime in TGO. See what you are missing starting on page 26...

It's Now A Lot Easier To Age Gracefully
Introducing the latest technology in aesthetic treatmentsIPL and Morpheus8!
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a non-invasive treatment that targets and destroys hair follicles to reduce unwanted hair growth. It also helps to fade sun damage and reduce the appearance of age spots and fine lines, leaving you with smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
Morpheus8 is a non-surgical advanced treatment that utilizes radio frequency that stimulates collagen and elastin in the skin, reducing the appearance of scars and wrinkles, helping to reverse the aging process.
Unfortunately for bananas, they can't control the aging process like people can. At MedAesthetics, we have treatments that improve fine lines and wrinkles, help firm and tighten mildly sagging skin, and diminish age spots, all which help restore your confidence to age gracefully.

Manager’s Corner
July 7, 2023
Dear TGO Community,
I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday with friends and family. It’s been hot-hot-hot here at TGO these past few weeks, crossing into the mid-90s most days. Typically, July is the slowest occupancy month here at TGO, as many of you are chasing the cooler weather somewhere north of here. I hope reading The Happenings helps to keep you connected to the summer activities and improvements happening here at TGO.
This issue of The Happenings features an article and a draft timeline outlining our Golf Course Renovation project in 2024. We’ve been reserving funds in preparation for this project for many years. This project became very real earlier this week when Chairman Cliff Creech signed a contract with Winterberry Irrigation to secure them as our irrigation construction contractor. The next major step is hiring a golf course contractor to rebuild our greens. We are now working with our consultant on this scope of work. Our plan calls for closing the golf course for renovation on Monday, April 15, 2024, and re-opening the course sometime in November after our new turf is properly grown in and ready for play. There are a lot of details in this article, and I hope you find it informative and exciting. This project is the biggest one-time investment in our 30-year-old community, and a major step toward keeping TGO great for many, many more years to come.
It’s that time of year to plan some home-cooked meals for one week. The Blue Heron Restaurant will be closed next week, from Monday, July 10 through Monday, July 17, to conduct deep cleaning and deferred maintenance. We plan this closure every year in July which is historically our slowest month for restaurant operations. Beth and the Blue Heron team have a long list of deep cleaning projects and team training they will complete during the week. The team will also take a much needed long weekend break with their families. Our CSA buildings and recreation teams will also participate in this week of improvements, including repainting the dining room, clubhouse bathrooms, and common areas. Please join us when we re-open on Tuesday, July 18. You will find a sparkling clean dining room and excellent food and service from a well-rested Blue Heron team.
Last week the CSA Board of Directors and I hosted an employee breakfast to say Thank You to all our employees and recognize years of service. Please see page 13 for some photos and additional information from this employee event. I was pleased to recognize two employees, Ray Dittemer from Waste Water, and Pat Marola from the Mail Center, for over 15 years of service to TGO. I was also pleased to join Grounds Supervisor Mike O’Neal to call out David Kramper as our Employee of the Quarter. Dave and the entire lawn crew team are working very hard to stay on top of our grass-mowing cycles. Their hard work is noticed and appreciated.
Other improvement projects continue throughout TGO at a steady pace. It is always encouraging when our traveling TGO residents return to TGO in the fall and notice our summer improvements. Until you return, I wish you safe travels. Please contact me or the CSA office team if there is something we can do for you or your property while you are away.
Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES!
Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited
What is Sulfation?
Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.
Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.
We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!
• Increase Your Battery Life-Span
• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries
• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition
• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries
Here is how it works...
Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250
Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance.
We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process.
This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.
• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch1
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

David Krampert - Our Quarterly Employee
In the midst of rain and sweltering heat, our dedicated lawn crew continues to excel in their duties this early summer. They have diligently stayed on top of our mow cycles, ensuring that our lawns receive exceptional care and maintaining their lush, vibrant appearance. Among the remarkable members of our team is David Krampert, who has been an invaluable asset to the TGO lawn crew for nearly four years.
Throughout his time with us, David's unwavering commitment and outstanding performance have caught the attention of Grounds Supervisor Mike O'Neal. He consistently displays commendable attendance and delivers exceptional results. It is no surprise that David's hard work and exemplary leadership qualities led to his promotion as a team lead. He now holds the responsibility of overseeing the maintenance of lawns in both Hidden Lakes and Hammock Oaks.
A true Floridian at heart, David was born and raised in North Brevard, with his roots extending to the old Parrish Hospital. Landscaping has been a significant part of his professional journey, and he finds immense satisfaction in working outdoors and sculpting lawns to perfection. Notably, his father's background as a retired NASA Space Shuttle lead technician adds a touch of pride to David's career.
Beyond his professional endeavors, David cherishes his role as a family man. He has been happily married for a decade and is blessed with a beautiful eight-year-old daughter who will be entering 4th grade this coming fall. When he is not engrossed in his landscaping duties, he relishes the moments spent with his family and occasionally indulges in his favorite activity of fishing.
What David truly appreciates about working at TGO are the heartfelt compliments he receives from friendly individuals who acknowledge his dedication and craftsmanship. Furthermore, the opportunity to immerse himself in the beauty of nature while working brings him immense joy. Although he is humbled and grateful for the Employee of the Quarter recognition he received, David is quick to attribute his success to the entire lawn crew team. He wholeheartedly embraces the spirit of teamwork and acknowledges the invaluable support he receives from his colleagues. The camaraderie they share is instrumental in overcoming challenges and providing assistance when needed. It is through their combined efforts that David is able to thrive in his role. Thus, this well-deserved recognition is a testament to the collective excellence of the entire team.
Congratulations, David, on this prestigious accolade. Your unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and commitment to maintaining the beauty of our community's lawns are truly commendable. May your journey at TGO continue to be filled with success and fulfillment.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Don't Get Burned - Treating Burns by Ed Brown
As a FD Paramedic for 35 years, I have had some experience with burn treatment. Let’s start with MINOR BURNS. These are burns that involve minimum skin damage and can be treated on a first aid basis.
• First, cool the burn. Hold the affected area under cool (not cold) running water for about 10 minutes. If the burn is on the face, apply a cool wet cloth until the pain eases. For a mouth burn, from hot food or drink, suck on an ice cube for a few minutes.
• Remove rings or other tight items from the burned area. Do this quickly and gently before the area swells.
• Don’t break blisters. They guard against infection. If a blister does break, gently clean the area with water and apply an antibiotic ointment.
• Apply lotion, after the burn has cooled, to prevent drying and to provide relief.
• Bandage the burn to keep air off the burned area, reduce pain and protect blistered skin.
• If needed, take a non-prescription pain reliever, such as Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, etc.
MAJOR BURNS require emergency medical help. CALL 911. They involve several layers of skin and may not be as painful as Minor Burns due to destruction of nerve cells, but they are serious. The skin may appear to be dry and leather-like. It may appear charred. Blisters may be larger than 3" in diameter. Personal experience has taught me the value of a cool Betadine in water application for the pain! A minor burn may need emergency care if it affects eyes, mouth, hands or genital areas. Babies and older adults may need emergency care for minor burns as well. Electrical burns, including lightning-caused burns, and major chemical burns also require medical care.
Protect the burn victim and any caregivers from harm, if you can. Remember to be careful to avoid burn injuries and the Post Traumatic Stress which can accompany an injured burn victim and you, as a potential rescuer.

These hours were made up by your Board Of Directors, not the CSA Courtesy Patrol - they are just doing their job. So please, don’t shoot the messenger (or in this case, your Courtesy Patrol Officer). Progress on the street side of Hobbyland is moving along nicely.
When Fox 35 saw Wild Florida Rescue’s story on Facebook about our deer with the lid, they decided to do a short story about it. Esther Bower, the Fox 35 Reporter, and Virgen Fantauzzi, the cameraperson, made arrangements to meet with Kris Morris from Wild Florida Rescue, and Betty Salter with our Nature Center.
Summer in TGO
Some folks love it here in the summer…why?
It’s all about the birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees, the moon up above and thing called love… the love of nature that is.
By May this year’s owlet is seen more and more on its own. Owl pellets litter the ground under the owls perch. The pellets have the less digestible materials in them. After a rain you can see the tiny bones that are freed from the pellet scattered about. You can watch as the owlet balances clumsily on a limb, holding onto its prey and concealing its meal from any onlookers.
The eagles have fledged although they haven’t completely left home. Often the fledgling will return to the nest and call out to the adults, begging for food. The fledgling will follow mom and dad around, watch them hunt, and then sit nearby and beg for food. When an eaglet leaves the nest it can weigh up to three pounds more than the adults. The extra weight is referred to by some birders as the flight suit. It is that extra weight that helps them survive until they master the finer points of hunting - some behaviors are instinctive others are learned.
We get to watch as the sandhill crane colt goes from downy chick, wobbling along with parents, to transitioning into the gangly juvenile imitating mom and dad and learning all about the world. When junior got too near the water, mama stepped in between the pond and junior who turned around and went back to foraging with dad. Mama had a stare down with a gator who did not get to taste that little bit of fl uff .
The common ground dove is a Florida resident, but we don’t see them very often in the winter. They spend most of their time on or near the ground. Perhaps the streets being fi lled with more vehicles, people and pets keep them in areas away from easy viewing. I do enjoy watching them all summer as they walk along the street and forage in the grass. They are so cute with their squared off tail and rufus highlights.

Riddle Answer: Turn 30
Driving on the entrance road one must be cautious, you never know what will be on the edge or in the middle of the road. The Florida softshell turtle will find a little patch of bare ground and begin laying eggs. She stretches her neck out as she does so. The problem is her neck is so long that though her body is off the road, her head and neck are well into the road. Otters can be glimpsed moving rapidly across the road, mama and her pups. From dusk to dawn there is always a chance you may encounter an alligator. The alligators begin courtship in April, mating season is May to June.
The last of our winter migratory birds have returned north to their breeding grounds. The American avocet is replaced by the black necked stilt who has spent winter further south. The black necked stilt young are little balls of gray fluff on pink stilts that hatch and walk away from the nest at the edge of the water to follow mom and dad around. As ground nesters it is safest for them to be on the move. When the adults perceive a threat, they will do the broken wing display and, if the threat doesn’t move away from the area, they will challenge and poke at the threat with their long very pointy beak. I have actually watched a stilt following a three to four foot gator, poking at its tail.
One of my favorite things about summer here is seeing all the babies…birds, deer, possums, raccoons, armadillos, etc. Summer, when there are fewer people around, either they’ve gone back up north or are sheltering from the heat indoors, that is when wildlife is seen more often. This is the time when we get calls about a little fawn laying right on the patio or under a shrub beside the house. My comment is, “How wonderful that doe chose your home to shelter her fawn. Do not disturb it. The fawn needs to rest.”
The fawns will stay pretty much right where mama dropped them. The doe cleans the fawn carefully; then she goes off to graze. The doe keeps watch from a distance and avoids drawing attention to her fawn. In the early weeks, the doe only goes to the fawn to feed it. It is really amazing; I know if I told my child, "just stay here,” then left for a number of hours, that kid would not be in the same spot when I returned! Continued...

The fawns will begin to travel with the doe when they reach a sufficient size at about two months. Never touch a fawn as you transfer the human scent to them which may draw predators. When mother has cleaned the newborn fawn, it has no scent. With no scent on them predators are less likely to find them.
Throughout the summer we get to observe Nature’s young as they explore our community. The colors in the meadow change as flowers go to seed and another specie takes its place. We don’t have the grand fall foliage you can see up north, but we do have grand flora most of the year and especially through the summer.
Gentle spring rains become electrically charged thunderstorms. You either love them or hate them, but they are awesome to observe from a safe place, like inside your house. As the rains increase so do the wildflowers. The firebreaks become beautiful meadows filled with yellow coreopsis, pink meadow beauty, white and pink camphorweed, purple mist flower and Nuttall’s thistle. Red cedar trees host the butterfly orchid. The flowers are not huge, but each spike will have five or more little blossoms. The flower’s color changes with time, the tepals (outer petals) start out a very pale yellowish-green and slowly turn yellow, red-brown or orange.
The Nature trail has stars shining throughout the day. Starrush whitetop, that is, with its long delicate white bracts tipped with green looking for all the world like a star that should be in the heavens and not on the ground. Frogfruit, with its reddish cone sporting a ring of tiny white flowers, draws skippers and other butterflies to its nectar. And oh, how the butterflies love all that nectar, even from the tiniest of flowers. White peacock, gulf fritillary, common buckeye, and tiny dainty sulphur butterflies enjoy this awesome buffet mother nature has set out for them. Zebra longwing, the Florida state butterfly, lays its eggs on the passion vine. The white peacock and common buckeye not only nectar on the Frogfruit, but they also lay their eggs on it. The dainty sulphur butterfly seeks out the very common Spanish needles which blooms year-round to lay its eggs. Giant swallowtail butterflies take advantage of the citrus trees and Hercules club to lay their eggs while the Palamedes butterfly uses the red bay tree. I do love it here all year! What I do miss during the summer are my good neighbors.

Nestled along the eastern coast of Florida, in Volusia County, lies a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike – Tomoka State Park. This picturesque park is a haven of natural beauty and rich history, offering visitors a chance to explore its vast landscapes, engage in various activities, witness unique wildlife, and enjoy some delicious cuisine.
Tomoka State Park holds a significant place in Florida's history. The park gets its name from the indigenous Timucua people who once inhabited the region.
"Tomoka" translates to "pleasant place" in the Timucuan language, which perfectly describes the serene ambiance of the park. These Native Americans thrived in this area for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.
In the 1770s, the land was an indigo plantation known as Mount Oswald. The first settler noted that the area was the highest spot in the Tomoka Basin and aptly named it as a small mountain.
Valuable indigo was the only source of blue dye, and Europeans of high status coveted blue-dyed clothes. Indigo plants can be seen throughout Tomoka and especially in the southern end of the trail.
During the 18th century, the park became home to a Spanish mission named Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de Acuera. The mission aimed to convert the Timucua people to Christianity. Though it was abandoned by the early 1700s, its ruins can still be explored today, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.
Tomoka State Park spans over 2,000 acres of diverse ecosystems, including marshes, swamps, and pine flatwoods. It is conveniently situated along the Halifax River, just north of Ormond Beach. Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean makes it an easily accessible destination for locals and tourists alike.
The park caters to a wide range of outdoor activities,
ensuring there is something for everyone. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll through nature or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, this park has got you covered.
Native wild coffee plants thrive in the shady areas under the trees. The plant produces small red berries that contain two seeds, and birds in the area feed on those seeds. Wild coffee berries were once brewed into coffee by early settlers; however, the berries do not contain caffeine.
The park boasts several well-maintained trails that wind through its various habitats. The Tomoka Trail, a 3.5-mile loop, takes hikers and bikers on a scenic journey through the forest, providing opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy breathtaking views of the river.
The Halifax River offers a fantastic setting for boating and fishing enthusiasts. Launch your boat from the park's ramp or rent a kayak or canoe to explore the calm waters and admire the surrounding beauty. Anglers can try their luck at catching snook, redfish, and mullet.

Chief Tomokie, the guardian spirit of Tomoka State Park, watches over the serene wilderness, guiding visitors through ancient trails and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the land.
Tomoka State Park is a haven for wildlife, providing ample opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Keep an eye out for majestic bald eagles, ospreys, herons, and woodpeckers as they soar above the treetops. The park is also home to an array of animals, including river otters, raccoons, and the elusive bobcat.
The park features well-maintained picnic areas with grills, making it a perfect spot for a family gathering or a romantic picnic. If you wish to spend more time in the park, camping facilities are available. Tomoka State Park offers 100 campsites equipped with electricity, water, fire rings, and picnic tables.
Tomoka State Park's diverse ecosystems provide a thriving habitat for an abundance of wildlife. The park's various habitats, including marshes, swamps, and forests, offer an ideal environment for many species to flourish.
Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of over 160 bird species within the park's boundaries. Keep your binoculars handy to spot the iconic bald eagles, ospreys, and various wading birds that inhabit the park.
If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the resident river otters playfully swimming in the Halifax River or spot a family of raccoons scavenging for food in the picnic areas. The park is also home to white-tailed deer, marsh
rabbits, and an array of reptiles and amphibians.
After a day of exploration and adventure, treat your taste buds to the delectable offerings of the area's best restaurant, The RiverGrille on The Tomoka. Located just outside the park, this waterfront eatery offers a picturesque dining experience overlooking the Halifax River.
The RiverGrille on The Tomoka combines a warm and inviting atmosphere with a diverse menu featuring fresh seafood, mouthwatering steaks, and a variety of delectable appetizers. From their signature crab cakes to their perfectly seared scallops, every dish is crafted with culinary expertise and served with a side of breathtaking river views.
Whether you're seeking a romantic dinner for two or a celebratory meal with family and friends, The RiverGrille guarantees a memorable dining experience that complements your visit to Tomoka State Park.
Tomoka State Park is a natural haven that showcases the best of Florida's landscapes, history, and wildlife. From its ancient ruins and diverse ecosystems to its thrilling outdoor activities and delicious dining options, the park offers a well-rounded experience for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Plan your visit to Tomoka State Park and immerse yourself in the wonders of this scenic gem in Volusia County.

The area was the site of a Timucua village known as Nocoroco, which became an organized Timucua village around 1300 B.P. It was the largest village noted by Spanish explorers in northeast Florida.
Tomoka is a bird-watcher's paradise, with over 160 species sighted, especially during the spring and fall migrations. You can easily your spot the bald eagles, ospreys, and variety of wading birds that inhabit the park.
Tomoka State Park
The Tomoka Trail is a half-mile trail that travels along the Tomoka Point peninsula. At the time of the first European visit to the Tomoka Point in 1605, the land was a maritime hammock (hammock is a Seminole word meaning shady place). As you walk the trail you can still see crooked salt-pruned maritime oak trees.
If you are seeking a little bit of adventure, you can also find canoe, kayak, paddleboard rentals, and guided boat tours (by reservation) on the beautiful Tomoka River and Basin.

Why It Is Important To Renovate Our Golf Course
The Great Outdoors Golf Course has proudly served both our TGO residents, guests and golf enthusiasts throughout Brevard County for the past 30 years. But the course is old and tired and in need of a facelift.
As the years pass, it becomes crucial to recognize the importance of renovating golf courses. Renovation projects provide an opportunity to enhance the golfing experience, improve environmental sustainability, attract new players, and ensure the long-term success of the facility. Here are some reasons that emphasize the significance of renovating our Great Outdoors Golf Course.
Enhancing the Golfing Experience
Golf courses, like any other recreational facility, require regular updates and improvements to maintain their appeal and keep pace with evolving player expectations. Renovations provide an opportunity to enhance various aspects of the golfing experience. This will involve reconfiguring the course layout, redesigning holes, upgrading tee boxes, fairways, and greens, and introducing new landscaping elements. By addressing these factors, renovations can breathe new life into the course, offering players fresh challenges, improved playability, and a renewed sense of excitement.
Infrastructure
Maintaining the infrastructure within any community is an expensive proposition. Our golf course is currently in a constant state of repair, we continue to incur expenses just to keep them functional. Our irrigation and drainage system is dated and we continue to spend money to make them functional. Our playing surfaces and sub-surfaces are dated and need to be replaced, thus providing a much improved playing surface. This renovation will provide us with a complete new irrigation system and help enhance proper drainage to prevent water accumulation that is common here when the summer storms invade.
Improving Environmental Sustainability
In recent years, environmental sustainability has become a crucial consideration for golf course management. Renovation projects present an ideal opportunity to incorporate eco-friendly practices that conserve water, reduce chemical usage, and enhance biodiversity. Modern golf course design principles emphasize the use of native plant species, efficient irrigation systems, and responsible pest management techniques. Through renovation, our course can minimize its ecological footprint, preserving the natural beauty of the area while contributing to the local ecosystem.
Attracting New Players
Golf courses must continually adapt to attract and retain players, particularly as the demographic and interests of golfers evolve. Renovating The Great Outdoors course allows for the integration
of new amenities and features that cater to the changing needs of players. We are already an award winner for the Best of The Best golf category in Brevard County. An improved updated course will bring more people to our community who in return spend money that also helps generate profit for the Blue Heron. Don't forget, as an owner in TGO, the golf course and the restaurant belong to us. We want them to remain profitable.
Ensuring Long-Term Viability:
The economic viability of golf courses relies on their ability to attract players, generate revenue, and remain financially sustainable. The renovation of The Great Outdoors Golf Course helps maintain its competitiveness in a dynamic market. Simply put, a refreshed and updated facility is likely to attract more golfers whether though competitive events, corporate events or just everyday play. By investing in renovations, the golf course demonstrates its commitment to long-term success and positions itself as a premier destination for golf enthusiasts. Don't forget, this investment will also help maintain or increase the value of your property.
Renovating our golf course is an essential step to ensure its continued success and maintain its relevance in the face of changing player expectations and environmental concerns. Enhancing the golfing experience, improving environmental sustainability, attracting new players, and ensuring long-term viability are all compelling reasons why we have embarked on this renovation. By embracing these improvements, The Great Outdoors Golf Course can offer an exceptional golfing experience to our owners and surrounding community for years to come.

Course Spray Out: Starting in February we will be spraying selected areas of the course with a herbicide solution to kill the existing vegetation and grass areas, creating a blank canvas for the renovation to begin.
Mobilization Of Resources: There are a lot of materials and manhours involved to complete this project. Our TGO team will need to coordinate with the architects, contracters, equipment, machinery and irrigation companies. We have developed a comprehensive plan that outlines the timeline and sequencing of these activities to help keep this project running smoothly.
Golf Course Closing Date: We have adjusted the closing date to April 15, 2024, due to Easter Sunday falling on March 31. The last day for play on the golf course will be Sunday, April 14.
Initial Excavation Work: This is the early stages of the renovation process for the golf course where vegetation and old irrigation systems are cleared or evacuated to eliminate all obstructions that may hinder or interfere with the new layout or design.
Irrigation Construction: This is where the removal of excess soil or the addition of fill material to level or reshape areas along with trenching and instalation of the new irrigation system. We will be installing over 60,000 feet of pipe and over 800 sprinkler heads for the irrigation system, plus all the necessary valving. Proper drainage is crucial for a well-maintained golf course. As part of the construction phase, drainage systems will be installed or upgraded to improve water flow and prevent issues like flooding or waterlogging in specific areas.
Greens and Tees Construction: The old greens will be removed and some existing green surfaces will be reshaped and contoured according to our new design. There will be a new base consisting of sand, soil, and organic matter. Proper drainage is essential for maintaining healthy greens. Our existing tee areas will also be graded and shaped with new soil and then sprigged or sodded with our chosen turgrasses.
Contractors Demobilization: There will be a lot of equipment, shipping pallets, crates, etc., that will need to be removed so we can start the grow-in processs, etc.

Both Shane Wiley and I are hoping that we can accomplish most of what you see on this project overview. We are excited about the work we have planned and are committed to providing the best return on your investment. We’ll keep you updated as the projects unfolds. Thanks for your continued support of TGO Golf.

Grassing: The process of establishing the turfgrass on the course. This includes soil preparation and almost 70 acres that will need sprigging and sodding. Different grasses will be used for different areas, considering factors like playability, appearance, and maintenance requirements.
Grow-In: This is the process of establishing and developing the new turfgrass on the course. After the grass has been planted, it needs time to grow and mature into a fully functional playing surface and establish a strong root system.
Aerification: Refers to the process of creating small holes or channels in the turf and soil to improve the air and water exchange, alleviate soil compaction, and promote healthy root growth. Aerification is often scheduled during periods when the turf is actively growing and can recover quickly
Course Detail Prep: An important step to make sure our course returns to its award-winning condition. There are a lot of details that include signage and directional markers, tee boxes, water stations and other amenities.
Course Rerating: Refers to the process of reassessing and adjusting the course's rating and slope values and is conducted by a committee representing the USGA and the FSGA. The rating and slope values provide golfers with information about the difficulty of the course which affects their handicap or skill level.
Reopen The Golf Course: Our projected date at this time is close to November 4. There are a lot of variables that will determine that exact date. Hopefully all the contractors will perform on schedule but most importantly, we need Mother Nature to cooperate. One hurricane could set us back several weeks.
Limited Play: For 2023, we are forecasting to entertain over 48,000 golfers at The Great Outdoors. It is difficult and not advisable to have that high number of average daily rounds as soon as the course re-opens. The plan is to increase daily play avaliability as the turf development and maturity warrants.
Please Note: These dates are projections only and may be subject to change.

Funny Thing Is… Gas stations give me gas.
Well, to be more specific, gas prices give me gas. They’re up, they’re down, then they’re up again. Like most roller coasters, the oil industry is making me sick. I always thought if I made enough money, I could buy whatever I wanted. Well, things aren’t exactly working out that way thanks to the remnants of the dinosaur era. When I was a little kid, I never pretended I was driving an electric car that took a shoehorn to get into. My lawnmower is more comfortable, and bigger! Who dreamt of owning a car that you could drive while cleaning out the trunk at the same time? Not me. I always imagined myself driving a Cadillac or sports car. Nope. I ended up in an unairconditioned Pinto that was more useful as a weapon on a bombing mission than a transportation vehicle. When I first started driving they had a thing going on called a “gas war." Contrary to my first thoughts it had nothing to do with refried beans. Gas was selling for $.17 a gallon and it took a grand total of $2.38 to fill up my Pinto. I could drive 280 miles on that. Back then, gas stations would offer all kinds of perks to come into their empty stations. Remember matching glassware, dishes, etc.? Gas stations still looked like ghost towns without the ghost. Not long after the gas wars came the gas shortage. Thanks to manipulative media, folks were convinced the world was running out of gas, and many figured that 7/8 of a tank wasn’t enough so they would wait in line for hours to top off the tank. If gas stations were smart they would have offered glassware to people to go home. The bad news is I still don’t drive a Cadillac. The good news is Taco Bell sells refried beans pretty cheap so I can get gassed up without paying an arm and a leg. ###

Here are 10 tips to consider, many of which are endorsed by OSHA, to help keep you safe from rising temperatures and other seasonal conditions.
1. Wear loose fitting clothing. Flowing garments allow air circulation close to the body, which helps keep the body cool and dry.
2. Select clothing with fabrics that are lightweight and moisture wicking. Look for clothing, such as 100% spun polyester, that is quick-drying with built-in moisture management technology for maximum breathability and comfort.
3. Choose clothing with built-in ventilation. Clothing constructed with lightweight, mesh fabric offers superior breathability and comfort.
4. Wear light-colored clothing. Dark colors absorb heat. Wearing light-colored garments helps reflect light and heat, and will help maintain a normal body temperature.
5. Cover as much skin as possible. When outdoors, workers should wear long sleeves and pants constructed of lightweight fabric and loose-fitting designs to help protect the skin against permanent damage from the sun, while providing breathability and air flow.
6. Wear a well-vented hat. Since the head quickly absorbs heat, wearing a hat with ventilation will create a barrier from the sun, protecting the head, face, and neck.
7. Protect the eyes. Wearing sunglasses when working outdoors will help reduce glare on the eyes and protect them from the sun’s damaging rays.
8. Look for protective garments that are breathable. At-risk workers who must wear protective garments that can often be heavy and constricting, should seek out garments that combine the highest level of protection with light-weight fabrics to help keep workers cool and comfortable.
9. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Pay attention to any exposed skin that is not covered by work clothing, such as hands, neck, and ears. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on these areas to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
10. Take plenty of breaks and stay hydrated. It’s important that workers take regular breaks and drink plenty of fluids while doing their job in extreme heat, especially outdoors.
AND if you see someone go down and suspect it’s due to HEAT, don’t hesitate. Act fast. Have someone call for help. Get them into the shade. Cool their body with cool wet compresses, give them water and monitor them till help arrives.

Sudoku Puzzles
SUDOKU puzzles have one solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row, column, and 3x3 square must contain one of each digit.
HARD EXPERT
Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Here’s a brief history of Sudoku, its origins, and the reasons behind its popularity. The puzzle’s origins can be traced back to the late 18th century in Switzerland, where a similar puzzle called “Latin Squares” was published in a local newspaper. However, the modern version of Sudoku was developed in the late 1970s by Howard Garns, an American architect and puzzle constructor from Connersville, IN. Garns created the puzzle and called it “Number Place.” He submitted it to Dell Magazines, where it was published in 1979. The puzzle gained significant popularity in Japan in the 1980s when it was introduced by the puzzle publisher Nikoli. Nikoli renamed the puzzle “Sudoku,” which roughly translates to “single number” in Japanese. The company refined the puzzle’s rules and introduced various solving techniques, turning it into a mainstream sensation in Japan.

A Morning On A Banana River Boat Tour
If you're looking for a fun way to spend the day on the water, you might want to consider one of the Banana River Boat Tours. We booked a two-hour morning trip starting at 9:00 am - a great time to be on the waterbut is there really a bad time? Although our trip was only a couple hours, we took in plenty of sights. JC, the Captain and owner of BRBT, was extremely knowledgeable about the river, its history and the role that NASA and the Kennedy Space Center play in the daily happenings of the Banana River. We saw lots of bird life, numerous dolphins that came right up to our boat, manatees and learned about all the capsized boats that can be seen up and down the river. JC has a great sense of humor, a plethora of stories, and as I said earlier, is extremely knowledgeable on numerous subjects. The trip is fun and he makes it just that much better.
Here is some info about their other tours
The Sunset Tour is a favorite among romantics and nature enthusiasts, promising an enchanting evening. As the boat gently cruises along the river, passengers are treated to a breathtaking display of colors, as the sky transforms into a canvas of fiery reds, oranges, and purples, all while enjoying your favorite cocktail.
For a unique adventure, the Rocket Launch Tour is a must-try. As Brevard County is home to the iconic Kennedy Space Center, lucky spectators can witness the awe-inspiring sight of a rocket piercing through the sky, leaving behind a trail of fiery exhaust. The guides on board will provide fascinating insights about the space program, helping make this tour an unforgettable experience for space enthusiasts of all ages.
How can you go wrong with a Cocktail Tour? A perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence. Passengers can savor refreshing beverages, served with flair, as they sail along the river. The soothing sound of the boat's engine combined with the gentle lapping of the water, along with the amazing wildlife, provide a peaceful backdrop for conversations and laughter.
In their commitment to eco-tourism, Banana River Boat Tours also offers Eco Tours, focusing on the rich biodiversity of the area. Dolphins can be spotted frolicking in the river and numerous bird species can be spotted. You'll definitely want to bring your camera - and that goes for all the tours!
One of the most extraordinary experiences offered by Banana River Boat Tours is the Bioluminescence Tour. As nightfall blankets the river, passengers are treated to a magical spectacle. The water comes alive with a shimmering glow, as tiny organisms called dinoflagellates emit bioluminescent light. A must see!
