Raise That Next Margarita to Jimmy Buff ett

Jimmy Buffett was and is a legend. Until his death this month on September 1, at the age of 76, Buffett was, and is, one of the most recognized names in the world. His songs are what our imaginations are made of. His concerts were as legendary as he was. His business prowess is unmatched by any other entertainer. Jimmy Buffet built one of the most dedicated fan bases in music history - once a Parrothead, always a Parrothead. We did a quick dive on the life of this remarkable man and his impact on our society. Don't be afraid to light one up and head over to page 38!

Nancy Clark - TGO's Squirrel Whisperer

Meet Nancy Clark, our neighborhood squirrel rescuer and rehabber. Nancy has a special skill very few of us have - she saves squirrels. In fact, squirrels are one of her passions along with helping all the wildlife within TGO. Whether it is a baby bird or baby squirrel, she is dedicated to helping it grow up. Rehabbing baby squirrels is no easy task as they must be fed every two hours depending on their age. She is also working hard to reestablish the Southern Flying Squirrel (Yes... Rocky!) in an effort to boost their numbers here in TGO. It's a bit of a tough job as these gliding squirrels are nocturnal. Learn more about Nancy and our squirrels on page 40.

Arrrrgh... Celebrating "Talk Like A Pirate Day"

Created by two friends in 1995 as a joke, "Talk Like a Pirate Day," on September 19, has become a beloved faux-holiday that lets everyone channel their inner Jack Sparrow. This year, The Blue Heron will be celebrating with a party that includes one of Brevard County's most talented pirates - Johnny Danger Live! The party is on Tuesday, September 19 at 6:00 pm. It should be a lot of fun - so hope to see you there - and dress up! To get you a little more excited about a Pirate Party, you'll find an informative article about the meanest, baddest pirates to rock the Florida coasts. You can start walking the plank on page 32.

Manager’s Corner

September 15, 2023

Dear TGO Community,

A BIG congratulations goes out to Chuck, Shane and the entire TGO golf staff team! The Great Outdoors Golf Course was once again recognized as “Best Golf Course” during The Brevard Community Choice Awards! This is the second year in a row we’ve taken the win. Chairman Cliff Creech and I were honored to attend a ceremony last week to receive the award. There are twenty-six golf courses in Brevard County, and four finalists were competing for this recognition, including Duran Golf Course, Viera East Golf Course and The Savannahs Golf Course. Thanks to all of you who voted for TGO. It feels wonderful to be recognized for excellence, especially when the recognition is the result of talented people doing great work.

Our historical Architectural Review (ARC) files are now completely digitized! This is a big accomplishment for TGO and our ARC committee, led by chairman Leon LeBlanc. I especially want to recognize and thank ARC secretary Margarete Shaw, who began this digitizing project in late May, and after many, many days of focused work, she completed the process in just under four months. There is now a computer set up in the ARC office to review your ARC files here in the CSA administration building. Owners can review their ARC files by completing a file review form to request an appointment. Appointments will be scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday during business hours, and you will be assisted by Margarete. Copies can be printed for a copy fee of $.25 per page. Documents can also be downloaded to a memory device at no charge.

Terri Griffith joined our administration staff last week as our newest CSA Owner Services Representative. She is sitting at the front desk formerly occupied by Carmella Galley who is now leading our recreation team. Terri has lived in Brevard County for over 25 years and most of her professional experience is in customer service. We’ve found Terri to be friendly, eager to meet our owners, and happy to learn about the services that CSA provides. I hope you’ll stop by the CSA office, or call, and help us welcome Terri to our team.

We are working steadily now to close out a few remaining improvement projects before our seasonal residents return this fall. This week we have contractors onsite who are painting the exterior of the Fitness Center, shuffleboard courts and Hobbyland. The renovation of our bathhouse at 360 Oak Cove is moving along well, and I expect this project will be completed by mid-October. The Fawn Lake dock renovation is also nearly completed.

Finally, we are watching the tropics very closely. Some of the storms we are watching have painfully slow tracks as they move across the Atlantic. Hurricane Lee is currently churning off our coast, but is expected to make a sharp right into the north Atlantic. Of course, in my lifetime as a Floridan, I’ve seen these storms demonstrate that Mother Nature is completely unpredictable. We are now in the height of hurricane season, and there is still much tropical activity in the Atlantic, so we will remain vigilant and prepared.

Sincerely,

3

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES!

Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited

What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span

• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries

• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition

• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Here is how it works...

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance.

We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process.

This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited.

Call to make an appointment...

321-268-4882

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434 .

These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

What gets bigger the more you take away?

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The Mourning Dove

Mourning doves have a well-earned reputation for being really lousy nest builders. Some actually manage to assemble a nest, although most other birds would find it greatly lacking. Some mourning doves just find something that is roughly nest shaped and maybe — maybe — add a couple of twigs or a blade of grass. Rather than fashioning intricate nests in trees or shrubs, mourning doves opt for a more minimalistic approach. They often choose flat surfaces like branches, ledges, and even the ground to lay their eggs. The nest itself is a basic arrangement of twigs, grass, and leaves that lacks the elaborate structure seen in many other bird species.

Mourning doves usually start building their nests in the early morning. The male dove will gather the pieces needed to make the nest and the female helps in arranging them to build the nest. But unfortunately, in the nest building process, the mourning dove carries only one straw at a time. And if by chance that straw drops, the birds won’t make any effort to pick that up and instead it begins its trip all over again. On the other hand, even birds like sparrows know the importance of efficiency in doing tasks. They carry as many pieces they can in their mouth – unlike the dove and thus they save their energy and time during the nest building process.

YES! They are Horrible Nest Builders!

Sometimes mourning doves build nests in conditions which don’t make their nesting safe enough. One person reported that they saw a mourning dove build a nest close to the rain gutter. The place was a very bad choice as a nesting spot since there was no protection or shade in that area. The nest could be easily affected by the heavy rain yet the mourning dove chose it as shelter. They are known to build their nests in some of the most awkward places you can think of: a narrow beam, hanging plants, sloping roof and so on. A man in Concord, CA, saw a courting pair in his yard, then found an egg nestled in the palm of his work glove. Others have seen nests built with a couple of twigs on a flat surface or precariously perched on a rafter or in the windshield wiper trough of a car. Here in TGO we have a pair of doves who have built their nest in the crook of a shuffleboard cue.

Criticize their home building skills, but don’t knock their parenting abilities. They are really great parents. They rarely leave the nest unattended and both male and female counterparts contribute to incubating the eggs. They have to be prolific and good parents. Mourning doves are the most hunted game birds in North America, with about 20 million of them being killed each year during hunting season. Yet the population remains strong and steady at around 350 million. Their relatively simple nest construction might be advantageous for quick and efficient breeding, allowing them to focus more on reproduction than on elaborate nest building. So you’ll find them rapidly constructing nests in any suitable, or unsuitable, location they can find, and simply start laying eggs there. Reproducing many times during the year and producing a lot of off-springs helps compensate for the loss of population that happens. Mourning Doves are known to grow up to six broods in a year. And their clutch size normally consists of two eggs. They can make a nesting attempt about every 30 days.

Mourning Doves feed hatchlings a “crop milk,” which is a specialized secretion that includes the cells from the walls of the bird’s crop. Both parents will feed this ‘milk’ to their chicks. Eggs hatch at about 14 days and leave the nest at about 15 days, but continue to be fed by the male for up to 30 days. After that the chicks are on their own and the parents are free to build another bad nest and raise more chicks.

Arrrrgh! Talk Like A Pirate!

Florida has a rich history of pirates and piracy in its waters, and there were several notable pirate figures who operated in the region during the "Golden Age of Piracy" - the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Like always, inquiring minds need to know more, so here is a quick lesson on a few of the infamous pirates associated with the Florida waters, along with their brutal and ruthless activities.

Blackbeard is one of the most well-known pirates of the era, who operated along the Atlantic coast of North America, including Florida's waters. He was known for his fearsome appearance, with a long black beard and slow-burning fuses in his hat, which created a terrifying image.

This infamous pirate struck fear into the hearts of sailors on the high seas. With his face obscured by a twisted, smoldering beard, he embodied the definition of ruthlessness. When capturing ships, he'd weave fuses into his beard, lighting them before battle, creating a hellish visage. His reputation was built on cruelty; he'd maroon those who crossed him on small islands, leaving them to face the relentless elements alone. He once blockaded the port of Charleston, forcing the authorities to meet his demands. Blackbeard's ruthless tactics earned him both treasures and a notorious reputation, making him a legend in the pirate hierarchy.

Blackbeard died in a fierce battle on the high seas with British naval Lieutenant Robert Maynard, who was sent by Virginia Governor, Alexander Spotswood, to track him down. He was shot, slashed and eventually had his head cut off. It was then placed on display and drunk out of.

Black Caesar was an African pirate who operated in the Florida Keys and the southern coast of Florida. Before becoming a pirate, Black Caesar was originally enslaved in Africa and then transported to the Americas. He was a slave on a South Carolina plantation. He managed to escape from slavery and made his way to Florida, where he became a pirate and began his infamous career.

He was the feared pirate of the Florida Keys, and a symbol of unrelenting ruthlessness. A former African slave, he escaped captivity and turned to piracy, terrorizing the seas with a merciless vengeance. His brutal raids along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic waters left a trail of destruction. Caesar was known to capture prisoners, forcing them to watch as he executed their comrades or left them marooned on desolate islands to starve. His cruelty knew no bounds, and his ruthless reputation spread far and wide, making Black Caesar a name whispered in dread among sailors and settlers alike.

Blackbeard (Edward Teach) Black Caesar (Caesar Negro): This Tuesday, September 19 is officially "Talk Like A Pirate Day." Hope to see you at the Blue Heron at 6:00 pm to celebrate the day.

Gasparilla (Jose Gaspar)

Gasparilla, often referred to as the "Last of the Buccaneers," was a legendary pirate who supposedly terrorized the west coast of Florida during the late 18th century; his story is a prominent part of Florida pirate lore.

He was an enigmatic pirate who haunted Florida's waters and was a ruthless terror of the Gulf Coast. With his black ship and crew, he struck fear into the hearts of sailors and settlers alike. His ruthless tactics included swift attacks on merchant vessels and merciless treatment of captives. Those unfortunate enough to cross his path faced marooning on desolate islands or brutal death. Gasparilla's cruel reign was marked by the plundering of coastal towns, leaving destruction in his wake. The legend of his hidden treasure, buried somewhere along the Florida coast, continues to lure treasure hunters, a haunting reminder of the ruthless legacy of the pirate who ruled the waves as the "Last of the Buccaneers."

Note: There is a Gasparilla Pirate Festival held each January, in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Jean Lafitte

Another notorious pirate from Florida's history was Jean Lafitte. Lafitte was a French pirate and privateer who operated in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Gulf Coast, including Florida, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is known for his involvement in smuggling and piracy and played a significant role in the defense of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Lafitte's name is often associated with the Gulf Coast and the pirate lore of the region.

He was the enigmatic pirate of the Gulf Coast, and a figure of ruthless cunning. He terrorized the waters from Louisiana to Florida. Lafitte was known for preying on merchant vessels, often leaving no survivors in his wake. His base on Barataria Bay became a haven for pirates, smugglers, and criminals, and his operations included slave trafficking. Lafitte's ruthlessness extended to his dealings with rival pirates and authorities, making him a feared and elusive figure.

Tom Brady

Considered one of the most notorious Buccaneers on the Florida coast, Brady is known for his one year $25,000,000 contract he pillaged from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But that was child's play compared to the $375 million dollar contract he had FOX Sports walk the plank for!

Charles Vane

Charles Vane was a "Pirate's Pirate," who sailed in the waters around Florida and the Caribbean. He operated during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century. He was known for a range of ruthless and violent actions during his piratical career. Some of the bad stuff Charles Vane was known for includes:

Acts of Piracy: Vane and his crew engaged in piracy on the high seas, capturing numerous ships. They plundered these vessels, stealing cargo, money, and valuables, often with violence and intimidation. (But what pirate didn't?)

Torture and Cruelty: Vane was known for his cruelty toward captives and prisoners. He was reported to have used torture to extract information about a ship's cargo or to intimidate his victims.

Burning Ships: Vane and his crew had a reputation for burning captured ships, which was a destructive and dangerous tactic. They would often set ships on fire after looting them, leaving crews stranded at sea.

Lack of Mercy: Vane was not known for showing mercy to his victims. He would often leave captives marooned on remote islands or execute those who resisted or defied him. Charles Vane's actions and reputation as a pirate were characterized by violence, cruelty, and a fierce resistance against authorities. His career came to an end when he was captured by the Royal Navy in 1719, and he was later tried and executed for piracy

Calico Jack (John Rackham)

Calico Jack was known for his distinctive clothing and for having two female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, among his crew. He operated in the waters off Florida and the Bahamas, where he was eventually captured and executed.

This notorious pirate captain ruled the Caribbean waves with an iron fist and an eye for fashion. With his distinctive calico clothing and fiery red hair, he struck fear into the hearts of those he encountered. Despite his flamboyance, he had a ruthless streak, never hesitating to engage in battle. In the end, his flamboyance and infamy caught up with him when he was captured and sentenced to hang. Calico Jack's colorful legacy lives on as a symbol of piracy's daring and defiance.

Anne Bonny and Mary Read

Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two of the most infamous female pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century. Their reputations were built on their fierce and daring exploits on the high seas.

Anne Bonny, born in Ireland, gained notoriety for her fiery spirit and defiance of traditional gender roles. She joined the crew of the pirate Calico Jack, and her reputation as a fierce fighter quickly grew. She wore men's clothing and fought alongside the male pirates, earning their respect and fear. Her legendary and famous quote was: "If you had fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

Mary Read, on the other hand, disguised herself as a boy from a young age to gain access to opportunities typically denied to women. She later joined the crew of Calico Jack

as well, and her true gender was only revealed after the capture of the pirate ship. Mary was known for her bravery and fighting skills.

The pair formed a formidable duo, and their reputation for fearlessness struck terror into the hearts of those who crossed their path. When captured, both Anne and Mary managed to postpone their execution because they were pregnant. Still, their legendary status endures as a testament to their defiance of societal norms and their unyielding spirit in the world of piracy

Captain William Kidd

Captain William Kidd, originally a privateer, became infamous as a pirate hunter and ultimately a pirate himself. He operated primarily in the late 17th century. Kidd was commissioned by various European governments, including the British and French, to attack and capture pirate vessels and to protect their interests in the Indian Ocean and the waters off the coast of North America.

Kidd's activities as a pirate hunter took him to various parts of the world, including:

Indian Ocean: One of Kidd's primary missions was to hunt down pirates operating in the Indian Ocean, which was a hotspot for piracy during that era. He pursued pirates in the waters off the coast of India and Madagascar.

Red Sea: Kidd also patrolled the Red Sea, attempting to suppress piracy in this region.

Eastern Seaboard of North America: Kidd's activities as a pirate hunter extended to the waters off the eastern coast of North America and into the waters near Florida, capturing pirates who were preying on shipping in these waters.

However, Captain Kidd's reputation took a dark turn, and he eventually turned to piracy himself. He attacked several vessels, including British and Indian ships, and became a wanted pirate. Kidd's most infamous act as a pirate was the capture of the Quedagh Merchant, an Indian ship carrying valuable cargo. This act led to his downfall and eventual capture by British authorities.

Kidd was arrested, brought to England, and tried for piracy and murder. He was found guilty and subsequently hanged in 1701. His trial and execution remain a significant historical event in the annals of piracy.

So... you want to be a Pirate? You'll need to learn these skills.

Pirates were notorious for their ruthlessness and violent tactics, which they used to intimidate and control their victims. Here are some examples of the brutal actions and tactics employed by pirates during the "Golden Age of Piracy:"

Boarding and Raiding: Pirates would often board merchant ships by force. They would overwhelm the crew with superior numbers and firepower, leading to violent clashes on deck. Pirates used cutlasses, pistols, and other weapons in close combat, resulting in numerous injuries or fatalities.

Torture and Brutality: Some pirates were known to use torture to extract information about a ship's cargo or treasure. They might threaten or harm crew members to force compliance. Captain William Kidd was accused of using torture as one of his favorite tactics.

Walking the Plank: This is a well-known pirate punishment in which a victim was forced to walk off the end of a plank extending over the side of the pirate ship and into the sea. But first they would chum the sea to attract numerous sharks. This was often used as a form of execution or punishment for disobedient crew members.

Marooning: Pirates would maroon individuals on deserted islands or remote coastlines as a cruel form of punishment. These marooned individuals were left to fend for themselves, with no food and little hope of survival.

Massacre and Pillaging: Some pirate crews were known to massacre entire crews of captured ships, particularly if the crew resisted or the pirates believed there was no valuable cargo on board. After such attacks, pirates would pillage the captured vessel, taking everything of value.

Hostage-Taking: Pirates would often take crew members and passengers as hostages, using them as bargaining chips to negotiate for ransoms or favorable treatment.

Ship Destruction: If pirates couldn't capture a ship or found it to be of no value, they might set it on fire or scuttle it (deliberately sink it) to eliminate evidence of their actions.

Forceful Recruitment: Pirates often forced captured sailors to join their crew. Those who resisted usually faced violence or death.

Mutiny and Pirate Justice: Pirates had their own code of conduct and justice. Disputes among crew members or acts of disobedience were sometimes met with harsh punishments, including marooning or execution.

Adios Jimmy Buffett

James William Buffett was born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He grew up in Mobile, Alabama, and was exposed to music at an early age.

Jimmy Buffett's first marriage was to Margie Washichek. They were married in 1969 but divorced in 1972. His second marriage was to Jane Slagsvol in 1977. The couple had two children together before divorcing in 1989. She is known to have been involved in his career and is the mother of his two children; Savannah Jane Buffett, born on June 1, 1979 who pursued a career in film and music, and Sarah Delaney Buffett was born on February 1, 1981. She has also been involved in the entertainment industry. They also adopted a son, Cameron Marley Buffett, who was born in 1994. Jimmy and Jane reconciled in 1991 and remained happily married until his death.

Buffett attended Auburn University in Alabama, where he studied journalism and was a member of the fraternity Sigma Pi. After leaving Auburn, Buffett transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he continued his studies in journalism and graduated in 1969. After graduating, Buffett moved to New Orleans and often held street performances for tourists on Decatur Street and played for drunken crowds in the former Bayou Room nightclub on Bourbon Street.

How much is Jimmy Buffett’s brand worth?

In April, Forbes estimated his net worth at $1 billion. Along with music sales and tours, Margaritaville’s success helped propel Mr. Buffett into the billionaire ranks.

At the time of his passing Jimmy owned 23 restaurants and 33 resort and hotel locations, with seven more in the works. He also branded his name on several RV Resorts.

JB licensed the name “Margaritaville," to a brand of tequila, a margarita mix, and a chain of merchandise stores. He owned Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant chain and co-developed the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain.

His line of merchandise can be found throughout the world including Hawaian style shirts, t-shirts, hats and more.

Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes

With 29 studio albums under his belt, it shouldn’t surprise you that Jimmy Buffett has sold a lot of records - more than 20 million! His best selling album is the iconic Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, which is certified platinum in the US. This album marks the first appearance of "Margaritaville," which went to number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and to this date is still Jimmy’s highest-charting single.

Jimmy first performed "Margaritaville" in public in The Coffee House at San Diego State University in spring 1976. He recorded "Margaritaville," his only Top 10 hit, in November of that year.

Books and Best Sellers

While Buffett pursued a degree in journalism, his true passion for music and writing. He began performing in college and later transitioned into a successful career as a musician and songwriter. He soon became known for his unique style and songs that often reflected his coastal and tropical lifestyle

Jimmy has written numerous books with three number-one best selling books: Tales From Margaritaville, Where is Joe Merchant?, and his biography, A Pirate Looks at Fifty. Having topped both the fiction and non-fiction bestseller lists put Jimmy in rare company. In fact, only seven other authors have achieved this level of success, including Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Dr. Seuss! Buffett also co-wrote two children’s books, The Jolly Mon and Trouble Dolls, with his eldest daughter, Savanna.

38
“If there’s a heaven for me, I’m sure it has a beach attached to it.”

Jimmy’s novel A Salty Piece of Land was released on November 30, 2004, and the first edition of the book included a CD single of the song A Salty Piece of Land. The book was a New York Times best seller soon after its release. Buffett’s last title, Swine Not?, was released on May 13, 2008.

In addition, Buffett released several books that included his sheet music and lyrics to his songs.

Television & TV

Jimmy had a few guest-starring appearances on the hit television show Hawaii Five-0. During these appearances, he plays rugged pilot Frank Bama. Frank is a character Buffett created for his book Where is Joe Merchant?

He made an unforgettable cameo in the hit movie Jurassic World as the man who took the time to pick up two margaritas while escaped dinosaurs wreaked havoc on Jurassic World Resort on Isla Nublar.

Jimmy made a guest appearance on the Sesame Street special, Elmopalooza, in 1998 and sang Caribbean Amphibian with Kermit the Frog.

Jimmy made his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1981. Jimmy explained how he broke his leg three different times - during a softball game, slipping off a barstool, and skiing.

The Coral Reefer Band

Jimmy’s legendary Coral Reefer Band has been touring and recording with him since 1974. Initially, the band consisted of fictional performers with names like Al Vacado and Kay Pasa, but these days, they’re all the real deal! Over the years, several big names have spent time in the Coral Reefer Band, including Timothy B. Schmit of Poco and Eagles fame, John Hiatt, and Jerry Jeff Walker.

There have also been plenty of special guests and honorary Coral Reefers over the years, including Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Brian Wilson, and Roy Orbison. Professional wrestler Ric Flair is even an honorary Coral Reefer for once providing - what else? - "background woos" during a live concert.

The Big 8

These are Buffett’s most popular songs and always played at his concerts:

1) Margaritaville

2) Come Monday

3) Fins

4) Volcano

6) A Pirate Looks at Forty

7) Cheeseburger in Paradise

8) Why Don’t We Get Drunk

Has Jimmy Buffett ever had a number one hit?

During his five-plus decades in music, Buffett earned two No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, as well as three top 10 hits, in part thanks to his willingness to maintain ties within the country music community, collaborating with a range of artists, including Alan Jackson and the #1 Billboard Hot Country song - "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere."

Margaritaville inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame

While we might still be looking for that lost shaker of salt, we know exactly where to find Jimmy’s iconic song "Margaritaville" - in the Grammy Hall of Fame! The Grammy Hall of Fame honors recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. "Margaritaville" must have been living on island time, because it wasn’t inducted until it was 39 years old in 2016. Continued on Page 66...

Meet

Nancy Clark Squirrel Whisperer

Nancy Clark moved to The Great Outdoors in 2017 with her husband, Scott. Prior to that time, she visited the park and rented sites periodically as her parents, Don and Noreen Payne also live here. Shortly after moving here, she became involved in the community. She helped out with a Firewise cleanup with her dad the second day after moving to TGO. Shortly thereafter, she was helping with the Nature Center's Fall Festival. Her volunteerism has not let up in the years since. Her love for animals led her to become part of the rescue team at The Great Outdoors. She finds peace and happiness in nature. She is also the curator for The Great Outdoors Nature Center, spreading her passion for nature to others here in the community.

Nancy has lived in Florida all her life and interacted with the wildlife in the state. She lived on a lake with alligators in her backyard, which proved to be a valuable experience here at TGO. She has been saving animals since she was 20-yearsold and believes there should be a balance between nature and people. She wants to help educate the TGO community on why animals will sometimes behave negatively and find solutions to combat those problems. That way everyone can live in harmony, keeping both people and animals safe.

Rehabbing baby squirrels is no easy task as they must be fed as often as every two hours...

Squirrels have always had a very special meaning for Nancy. She rescued her first squirrel at the age of 13 after it fell out of a tree. She went on to raise that squirrel for three years. On her first rescue in TGO, she helped saved three baby squirrels which led her to contact Squirrel Angels, a rehab center. They set her up with everything she needed to care for those baby squirrels. They also asked her if she wanted to be a rehabber. That started Nancy on her path of rehabbing the wildlife here at TGO.

Nancy is a sub-licensee for the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) to be a rehabber. She can help many but not all species of wildlife here at TGO. She has gained medical training related to animals during her time as a rehabber. Through this training, she was able to help a wa-

ter bird that had been cut by a weed eater. She treated the cut, rehydrated the bird, and released it later that evening. As a rehabber, she also used a program called Baby Warmers to earn two incubators - a large incubator in her home and a smaller travel incubator. These incubators are helpful to both her and the rest of the rescue team here inside TGO. The travel incubator has been used to keep animals warm as they are transported to other locations to be cared for.

Nancy is very skilled at rescuing and rehabbing squirrels and has used that knowledge to boost the number of southern flying squirrels located here at TGO. Southern flying squirrels are small, nocturnal squirrels that eat bugs along with fruit and nuts. These squirrels can glide from tree to tree, and their numbers in this area have been low. Nancy has rescued and rehabbed both adult and baby flying squirrels. After recovery, she releases them back into the community. Rehabbing baby squirrels is no easy task as they must be fed as often as every two hours depending on how young they are. She also buys the formula and food for the animals she cares for. In the last year, she has twice rescued flying squirrels. One of these

40

squirrels was pregnant at the time. These squirrels were rehydrated, kept warm, and provided new homes.

She has rescued many squirrels that have been displaced or injured. When baby squirrels are found, she will keep them safe and warm until nightfall. Then she returns them to the same area they were found and makes a baby squirrel cry which draws the mother to the babies, reuniting the family. She has done this successfully six times here at TGO. Nancy has also cared for baby squirrels after an exterminator unknowingly left them unattended by removing their mother from the home. Nancy is so skilled at caring for squirrels that she has been asked to care for difficult cases when other rehabbers can’t handle them.

Nancy is a part of Squirrel Angels rescue. But, don’t let the name fool you, they rescue other types of animals as well. They have recently started saving bees and currently oversee eight hives. This rescue also raises goats to provide milk to help feed the wildlife when formula can’t be obtained. Nancy has personally rescued squirrels, an otter, armadillos, turtles, and many other animals.

While speaking with Nancy, multiple times she referred to teamwork as the key to successfully rescuing and rehabbing wildlife here. There are currently a total of five rescuers at TGO, and each of the members has a different skill set. The team often works in pairs to stay safe. Once Nancy was on a rattlesnake call, and she and her teammate thought they had the snake contained when another snake came up on them from behind. The team always works in pairs when they receive a call because the situation could be dangerous. Beyond members of the squad, there is a larger network of other individuals in the area who help provide support and rehab injured animals. If Nancy or other members of the team encounter a new problem, they have additional resources to contact to receive guidance and advice. They also know other rescuers in the area who can care for injured animals if the team here at TGO cannot. Many times, these animals are brought back to the community once they have recovered from injuries and are returned to their original habitat.

Nancy and the rescue team at TGO re-nest birds when they fall or get blown out of a tree. If the baby birds on the ground have feathers, it is better to leave them on the ground so the bird’s parents will come feed them. If the baby birds are younger and do not have feathers yet, they are re-nested. The team places new nests with the baby birds close to where they were originally found. This helps their parents find them. Nancy and her team recently had success with two nests

of mockingbirds in this way. One of these nests was close to Nancy’s house, allowing her to watch them fly out of the nest when they got big enough. After leaving the nest, these birds stayed in a Dahoon Holly tree in her yard for another two weeks eating berries off the tree.

Nancy and the rescue team at TGO re-nest birds when they fall or get blown out of a tree.

For Nancy, each day is unique in her role as an animal rescuer with activities depending on the needs of the community. When I asked her to describe a recent special encounter here at TGO, I expected her to relate a story about her beloved squirrels. Instead, she related a rescue of a mother possum and her babies. A storage area was being upgraded. As the area was being cleared out, they found a mother possum and her four babies located in a tire. Nancy and her teammate put the tire with all the animals inside in a box and transported it to the nature center. The mother possum was very gracious for the help and didn’t hiss or become angry. The babies stayed with their mother and she gave her some food and nutrition to help with dehydration. The entire family took off later that day.

Nancy considers her activities as an animal rescuer and rehabber to be intrinsically rewarding. She said it is very satisfying when she can help get a snake out of someone’s house or help an injured animal, but it is also heartbreaking when they aren’t able to help. While some animals can’t be saved, it is worth it when she can rehab one and safely return it to the area. She would like members of the TGO community to know that she and the rest of the rescue squad are available to help when an injured animal is encountered or if you have a problematic situation. If you see downed wildlife, Nancy emphasized that people should call a member of the rescue team instead of offering the animal water, food, or try relocating it. Nancy also mentioned animals sometimes pass diseases amongst each other, including us humans. This becomes more of a problem when people relocate animals or draw animals into new areas by feeding them. This co-mingling of animal communities can pass a disease (such as wasting disease in deer or distemper in raccoon) between animals and wipe out all members of the species in the area. More information on the wildlife at TGO can be found at The Great Outdoors Nature Center.

In a 1970’s movie, Clint Eastwood, as Dirty Harry, asks a bad guy, “Do You Feel Lucky?...Do you?!” The bad guy was not lucky. Residents of TGO have been amazingly lucky this year.

Hurricane Season was ushered in by a Tropical Storm that hit the Pacific Coast in Baja and stumbled destructively the length of California; then Oregon and Washington State. It died in Canada! Flooding, mud slides, downed power lines, fatalities and all the “joys” of a major hurricane followed the overland path. Overland for 1,000 miles? What would be next?

We had a couple of tropical storms in the Caribbean, the East Coast of the U.S., and finally Florida. Some communities near the Georgia border, like Live Oak, got slammed! Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico was disassembled and flooded. TGO and Titusville only got a rain squall!

AWARENESS: Ultimately, you will have to decide to stay (hunker down) or go (evacuate).

1. I hope you made lists and shopped wisely.

2. If you choose to go, do it early, before evacuation traffic gets heavy and fuel sources run low. If you leave TGO before a “MANDATORY Evacuation" is called, you may tow your “dinghy.” Otherwise, only your RV may leave.

3. Decide what you need to take with you for survival, comfort and morale. Take cash money for purchasing necessities and for feeding your pets.

4. Plan your route and alternatives. Use a paper map. 5. Keep your non-TGO family advised of your plans and trip progress. Keep cell phones charged.

AVOIDANCE:

1. Avoid dangerous situations: on the route you take, the people you interact with on the road and frankly, be suspicious and protective of your family, food, water and vehicle.

2. Make sure your vehicle is always road-worthy and fueled before you leave home. Don’t drive through standing water. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

3. Don’t ever think about wading through moving water!

4. Hurricanes are unpredictable.

LIKE DIRTY HARRY

1. Know as much as possible about the threat: THE HURRICANE!

2. Learn from history… of hurricanes and other dirty weather.

3. Keep a positive attitude.

4. Keep group (family) morale high, including assigning meaningful tasks, and checking results.

5. Make your own good luck through well thought out positive actions.

6. Be an exemplary group (family) leader.

7. Eat, Hydrate, Sleep and Recharge when and where you can. BE STORMWISE...

If you think this all sounds like the first page of a Survival Manual, you get an A+ for Reading Comprehension! Prepare Early, Remain Positive and Stay Safe.

Funny Thing Is… Fall Fell On Football

Fall is supposed to be the season of changing temperatures, crispness in the air, gorgeous color palettes adorning the trees and plants, State and church fairs, holidays like Oktoberfest, Thanksgiving, and, of course, the time of year for magnificent displays of color, lights, and holiday decorations both in the malls and on so many homes. Yes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. So what could be depressing this time of year? Professional football. My favorite NFL team is the Cleveland Browns. Fans of this team tailgate, barbecue, and drink with kindred spirits, but they drink to help them deal with what’s to come when the game starts rather than the breathless anticipation of their team’s potential victory. No wonder Cleveland has the highest alcohol sales in the country from September to December. There have been 56 Super Bowls played. The Browns have played in ZERO. None. Ever. Thirty of the fifty-six Super Bowls have been won by only six teams. What about the other 26 teams? It's not hard for Anheuser Busch to figure out which cities to send the most beer to every September. Here’s what perplexes me. On Saturdays I watch college teams execute perfectly synchronized maneuvers, looking like a ballet troupe with flawless execution. How much do they get paid for this magnificence? Nothing. On Sundays I watch these multi-millionaires stumble and bumble, tripping over each other, fumbling the ball, and tossing passes to guys wearing jerseys whose colors are so starkly contrasted from their own that someone colorblind would be able to tell they are the other team. At the end of the day they walk off the field, bewildered and beaten, limping into the locker room to collect a check for those three hours of ineptitude that is, in some cases, five times what the President of the United States, the most powerful human on earth, gets for the entire year! I just don’t get it!!! Then, in the postgame interview, while putting on gold jewelry costing more than any five houses in most neighborhoods and weighing more than the cow they had for breakfast, they shrug their shoulders and say stuff like, “I don’t know what happened,” and “we just didn’t get it done today.” DUH! Really? Maybe they wouldn’t pull so many muscles if they weren’t carrying an extra 100 lbs. of gold around all day. No wonder aliens haven’t invaded us yet. They probably watch professional football on Sunday and figure we’ve suffered enough. Besides, who would want to conquer a planet where people act like the Keystone Cops on steroids? Surely there are planets out there where the highest paid inhabitants are the best and brightest. Wouldn’t it be better to invade them? So when does basketball season start? - Dr.

While carting or walking around the nature trail, you might have noticed two ladies driving on the outside of the fence in what looks like a tank. They are Katrina Noland and Amanda Lee, Land Management Specialists with the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD). That tank is their Marsh Master and they're performing the annual maintenance of mowing down the Firebreak west of TGO. The extra clearing around the pond at the nature trail bridge is part of a buffer zone for the property southeast of the bridge. If the weather agrees, the SJRWMD will do a prescribed fire burn west of TGO. The goal is to remove fuel so that we are less likely to have a catastrophic wildfire event.

Adios Jimmy Buffett

"Margaritaville" - The Most Lucrative Song Ever Written

In addition to being the best song ever written (depending on who you ask), "Margaritaville" is also often referred to as the most lucrative song ever written. Why does it have that title? Well, restaurants, resorts, and casinos all over the world bear the Margaritaville name. You can wear Margaritaville apparel and mix a tasty beverage using a Margaritaville drink mix (or perhaps blend it in your Margaritaville blender), all while listening to "Margaritaville" on your stereo.

A Pink Crustacean Tour

Jimmy’s first tour that had a name was in 1976. It was called the “A Pink Crustacean” Tour, taken from his album A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean. This album name was a riff off the Marty Robbins’ song "White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation."

Parrotheads

The nickname parrothead originated in a 1985 concert in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Timothy B. Schmit, of Poco and Eagles fame, had the distinction of coining the name “Parrotheads." Fans were carrying inflatable parrots and wearing Hawaiian shirts. Being a Parrothead means you are a fan of both Jimmy Buffett's music and the laid-back, beachy lifestyle he promoted. The younger fans, or children of Parrotheads, are known as "parakeets" or "keets." You could also count on a distinctive smell that would over take every Buffett performance.

Jimmy loved Manatees:

Jimmy did extensive work with environmental groups in Florida and the Caribbean and it should come as no surprise that Jimmy had a soft spot for the creatures of the sea, but he especially loved manatees. So much so that in 1981, he co-founded, with former Florida governor Bob Graham, the Save the Manatee Club. The mission of the Save the Manatee Club is simple - to protect endangered manatees and their natural habitats. Today, there are approximately 40,000 members of the Save the Manatee club, all working together to fund research, rescue, conservation, and rehabilitation efforts, as well as awareness campaigns to inform the public about these unique animals.

Odds and Ends

Jimmy was a licensed pilot who flew his own light aircraft and owned a 1954 Grumman Albatross seaplane called “The Hemisphere Dancer.”

Buffett has claimed that his favorites of his own songs are: "He Went to Paris," "Death of an Unpopular Poet," "Come Monday," "A Pirate Looks at Forty," "Nautical Wheelers," "Son of a Son of a Sailor," "Sending the Old Man Home," "Twelve Volt Man," and "Distantly in Love."

JB fell, face first, off the stage at the end of his concert in Sydney, Australia, on January 26, 2011 and was rushed to the hospital.

The music video of his song "One Particular Harbour" was filmed on the same set and at the same time as The Bounty (1984). The two productions also shared props and extras. Escape to Margaritaville is the Broadway musical for all of us - it's the People's Musical! This upbeat and energetic show features all your favorite Jimmy Buffett classics, including "Volcano," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise" and many more.

ADIOS!

After entering hospice care just five days prior, Buffett died on September 1, 2023, at his home in Sag Harbor, New York, at the age of 76 from skin cancer (diagnosed in 2019) that had turned into lymphoma.

RIP Jimmy - We will miss you!

Sudoku Puzzles

SUDOKU puzzles have one solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row, column, and 3x3 square must contain one of each digit.

HARD EXPERT

Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Here’s a brief history of Sudoku, its origins, and the reasons behind its popularity. The puzzle’s origins can be traced back to the late 18th century in Switzerland, where a similar puzzle called “Latin Squares” was published in a local newspaper. However, the modern version of Sudoku was developed in the late 1970s by Howard Garns, an American architect and puzzle constructor from Connersville, IN. Garns created the puzzle and called it “Number Place.” He submitted it to Dell Magazines, where it was published in 1979. The puzzle gained significant popularity in Japan in the 1980s when it was introduced by the puzzle publisher Nikoli. Nikoli renamed the puzzle “Sudoku,” which roughly translates to “single number” in Japanese. The company refined the puzzle’s rules and introduced various solving techniques, turning it into a mainstream sensation in Japan.
