The Talk Like A Pirate Party

Aaaaargh! If you were there, you would know. The Talk Like a Pirate Party last Tuesday at the Blue Heron proved to be a big hit. TGO residents came out in a big way to support this event. There were 23 entries signed up for the costume and another couple dozen who walked the plank. Beth and her BH sta did an incredible job. The Pirate Stew was fantastic! Johnny Danger rocked the house with his classic tunes. It was Fun with a capital "F." There are a few pictures inside this printed version of The Happenings, but the online version has over a hundred of the participating pirates. This just might be the time to start reading the Full Color online version. It's Easy!!

Why We Are Firewise

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a national organization dedicated to the protection of life and property from fire. It has become a clearinghouse for regulations and standards which are used throughout the country. From there, the result was the establishment of the Firewise USA (Firewise) program. This provided the structure and support for the establishment of Firewise Communities (sites) throughout the US. TGO is proud to be a Firewise Community. Here at TGO, we are surrounded by wildland and the threat for a wildland fire is real. This did not go unnoticed by a group of TGO residents, who established our first Firewise back in January 2010. Since then, Firewise has been an important group in overseeing the fire safety of this park. See page 40 for more details.

Manager’s Corner

September 29, 2023

Dear TGO Community,

Fall is finally here! After many long months of heat and high humidity, this past weekend brought our first taste of relief, with slightly cooler and drier weather. Our lawn crew welcomes the shorter, cooler days to dry up the turf and slow the grass growth. Now we can spend more time on the finer detail work throughout the community. Fall is also the time for budgeting. The next several weeks I will be meeting with managers and supervisors to gather their budget needs and begin to compile a first draft of the 2024 budget. This coming year’s budget will look very different than previous ones, because our golf course will be closed for approximately six months as we execute the major renovation of our tees and greens, and install a brand-new irrigation system. This is the biggest one-time investment in our community, and an exciting time for TGO.

TruGreen will provide their comprehensive spray treatment next week, on Tuesday, October 3 and Wednesday, October 4. Your lawn will receive an application of 16-0-8 SRN fertilizer, along with an insecticide and two weed controls for broadleaf weeds and sedge grasses. The insecticide product is called Talstar, and the weed control products are Dismiss and Manor. As always, please contact the CSA office by Monday at 12:00 pm if you wish to be on the ‘do not spray’ list. Please keep pets off the grass for 1.5 hours after spraying while the product dries. Finally, please do not approach the TruGreen techs while they work in the field. If you have concerns or questions, contact the CSA office and we will relay your message to TruGreen management.

The Blue Heron Restaurant Café will now expand its hours to be open on Mondays for breakfast and lunch beginning this Monday, October 2. Our new restaurant manager, Musa Alici, is working with our restaurant committee to plan a new ‘high season’ menu in early November. Some menu testing will be offered in October in the form of daily specials. Your support of our Blue Heron and Café is so important to keep these amenities viable, especially as we prepare for 2024, when our golf course will be shut down for renovation for approximately six months.

Next week we welcome the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament on Friday morning, October 6, beginning at 8:30 am. This tournament has historically been held at other area golf courses and restaurants, but for three years in a row now, the Chamber has decided to host it here at TGO. We can expect as many as 150 players, sponsors and staff to participate and join us for lunch afterwards. I am sure we will put on a great show for our local North Brevard business leaders. Finally, it’s time to clean the exteriors of our common area buildings! This mid-October all of our facilities will be pressure washed. I’m always amazed at how fast bugs and grime build up, especially during the summer time. There may be some short closures and inconveniences while this work is being done. Have you checked your home for exterior mold and mildew build up? Perhaps it’s time for you to schedule a pressure washing of your home too? Let’s all do our part to keep our community looking clean and new.

I sincerely wish each of you good health and safety this Fall.

Sincerely,

3

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES!

Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited

What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span

• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries

• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition

• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Here is how it works...

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance.

We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process.

This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited.

Call to make an appointment...

321-268-4882

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

Newcomer Orientation Meeting

The first Newcomer Orientation Meeting for this season will be held in the Manor on Monday, November 13, 2023 from 11:30am until 12:30pm. Guest speakers from CSA, ARC, Courtesy Patrol, Nature, Golf, Activities and Firewise will share important information. Bring your questions. We also have door prizes! Please call Nancy Wagner at 607-542-6374 to reserve your spot so we will have enough seating and handouts for everyone.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434 .

These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

What is at the end of a rainbow? The answer is somewhere in this issue.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

October Is Fire Safety Month

Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) celebrates National Fire Safety Month in October with October 7-13 being national fire prevention week and October 13 being National Home Fire Drill Day.

Establish an emergency action plan, discuss escape routes, and locate fire extinguishers in your surroundings. Conduct a mock fire drill to ensure that everyone knows how to get out safely.

Below are key components to ensuring your area is fireproof:

1. Eliminate Clutter -Exercise good housekeeping.

2. Fire Extinguishers - Ensure they are in good, working condition. Provide training on correct use of fire extinguishers.

3. Chemical Safety - Use and store chemicals safely.

4. Waste Control & Storage - Limit the accumulation of flammable or combustible materials.

5. Exits - Ensure emergency exit routes are posted and accessible in all areas.

6. Contact Information - Everyone should have access to a list of emergency contact phone numbers in case of emergency. Remember that human nature is to panic in emergency situations; therefore, basics such as the address, what the emergency is, are there people involved, is important information when dialing 911.

The reality is that fire emergencies and disaster situations can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere. So, remember, don’t panic, A-C-T:

Mosquitoes: Nature's Hilarious Little Helpers

When it comes to nature's comedy lineup, mosquitoes might not be the headlining act, but they certainly deserve an honorable mention for their unintentional humor. Yes, you heard me right. Those pesky, blood-sucking creatures have a hidden talent for making us laugh. Let's take a moment to appreciate how good mosquitoes are for us in the comedy department.

The World's Tiniest Vampires:

Mosquitoes have an uncanny ability to turn a peaceful summer evening into a slapstick comedy show. Picture this: You're lounging in your backyard, sipping on a refreshing beverage, when suddenly you hear that high-pitched whine in your ear. You swat at it like a ninja, but the mosquito always seems to escape. Cue the Benny Hill music, and you've got yourself a classic chase scene.

Masterful Pranksters:

Mosquitoes are the ultimate pranksters of the insect world. They sneak up on you when you least expect it, and their bites can make you jump, dance, and do the mosquito-slap boogie. It's like they have a hidden camera crew recording your every move for the world's funniest home videos.

"Buzz"kill Comedians:

The buzzing sound of a mosquito in your bedroom at night is like a stand-up comedy routine that never gets old. They're basically nature's way of reminding you that you should have invested in a mosquito net. As you search for the source of the sound with a flashlight, you can't help but wonder if the mosquitoes have their own late-night talk show.

Olympic Gymnasts:

Mosquitoes are surprisingly athletic. Have you ever watched one do acrobatics while trying to land on your arm? It's like they're auditioning for the circus. Their aerial maneuvers are so impressive that you almost want to give them a round of applause. Bravo, mosquitoes, bravo!

They Bring People Together: Nothing brings people closer than a mosquito infestation. When the whole neighborhood is under attack, you'll find yourself bonding with your neighbors over mosquito horror stories. It's like a mosquito-themed block party, complete with itchy anecdotes and bug spray as the beverage of choice.

Fashion Trendsetters:

Mosquito bites have a unique way of inspiring fashion trends. Who needs bracelets and anklets when you can sport a stylish cluster of mosquito bites on your arms and legs? It's the hottest accessory of the summer, and it comes in a variety of sizes and shades of red.

In conclusion, while mosquitoes may not be our favorite insects, they certainly have a knack for injecting humor into our lives. From their slapstick chases to their late-night buzzing routines, these tiny terrors remind us that laughter is the best mosquito repellent. So, the next time you're in The Great Outdoors and those pesky insects start their comedy routine, try to appreciate the humor in the situation. After all, laughter is the best way to scratch that mosquito bite itch.

National Raccoon Day

Yes, there is actually a National Raccoon Day! It was originated by a little girl from California in 2002. (Personally, I think Betty Salter had something to do with it!) This little girl created this day for various reasons. Mainly, she just wanted people to accept these little eco-terrorists and bring awareness regarding their protection and their habitats, and also promote biodiversity. This holiday is also known as International Raccoon Appreciation Day. (Good luck getting the day off!)

So let's take a closer look at these little critters. According to my friend, Chad, who is an expert on these little masked bandits, raccoons are intelligent and adaptable creatures, but they can sometimes exhibit behaviors that are considered troublesome or problematic, especially when they interact with humans and urban environments. Here are some of their "bad habits."

Raiding Trash Bins: Raccoons are notorious for rummaging through trash cans and dumpsters in search of food, creating a mess and spreading litter.

Garden and Crop Damage: Raccoons can damage gardens and crops by digging for insects or eating fruits and veggies.

Property Damage: Raccoons may tear through roofs, siding, or insulation when seeking shelter in attics, crawl spaces, or chimneys.

Pet Food Theft: Raccoons are known to steal pet food left outside, potentially leading to confrontations with household pets.

Disease Transmission: Raccoons can carry diseases such as rabies, distemper, and raccoon roundworm, posing a health risk to humans and other animals.

Digging Holes: They may dig holes in lawns and gardens while searching for grubs and insects to eat.

Nuisance Behavior: Raccoons can make a lot of noise at night, particularly during the mating season. Their vocalizations can be bothersome to nearby residents.

Unwanted Pool Guests: Raccoons are known to fall into swimming pools and have difficulty getting out, potentially causing damage to pool covers or drowning.

Stealing Bird Eggs: Raccoons are skilled climbers and can raid bird nests to eat eggs and young birds.

Traffic Hazards: Raccoons often cross roads and highways, increasing the risk of vehicle collisions, which can be dangerous for both raccoons and drivers.

It's important to note that raccoons are just trying to survive and find food and shelter in their natural environment, which is increasingly overlapping with human spaces due to urbanization.

Raccoons are not all bad though...

Despite their reputation for causing some inconveniences, they play important roles in the ecosystem and can offer several benefits. Here are a few positive aspects of raccoons: Seed Dispersal: Raccoons often eat fruits and berries, and they can inadvertently aid in seed dispersal. By consuming these fruits and then depositing the seeds in their feces in different locations.

Insect and Pest Control: Raccoons have a diet that includes insects, small rodents, and other pests. They can help control populations of insects like beetles, grubs, and mosquitoes, which can be beneficial for agricultural and human health.

Scavengers: Raccoons are scavengers and can help clean up carrion and roadkill. This helps prevent the spread of diseases and keeps ecosystems cleaner.

Indicator Species: Raccoons can serve as indicator species, meaning their presence or absence can provide insights into the health of an ecosystem. Monitoring raccoon populations can help researchers gauge environmental changes and the impacts of human activity.

This month it’s Happy Birthday to the U.S. Navy!

Since I am a retired Army NCO, it may be surprising to learn that I personally have a really soft spot in my heart for the Navy. I actually began my military career as a hospital corpsman in the Navy on January 5th, 1973. Like most of us veterans, to this day I remember boot camp (in Orlando!) and my drill instructor RM1 Dietel. It was a great experience and helped form my future military career. I’ll always be very proud of my Navy service.

Did You Know??

1) The Continental Congress established the Continental Navy at the beginning of the American Revolution with its main purpose to disrupt British supply ships. On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress purchased two armed vessels to attack British ships and prevent them from reaching soldiers in the colonies.

2) The U.S. Navy is the largest naval force in the world. It boasts more than 330,000 active-duty personnel, and an additional 100,000 on ready reserve. The Navy hosts an impressive fleet of 290 battle force ships consisting of aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, cruisers, combat ships, destroyers and submarines.

3) It names ships after states and national heroes, and there’s a long list of rules and regulations that must be followed. For example, all first-class battleships, those armed with 40 guns or more, must be named for the states, and not for any city, place or person until the names of states have been exhausted. It’s a huge honor for a ship to be named after a person and the tribute is usually reserved for naval leaders and national figures who are considered heroes of war or made extraordinary achievements in peace.

4) Famous Navy veterans include Humphrey Bogart, Montel Williams, and Johnny Carson.

Hot Topic: College Scholarships

For those of you with children or grandchildren in high school, you are well aware of the challenges that exist while trying to find ways to help pay for college. Many of us do what we can to try to help out financially, but as a college education becomes more and more expensive, every little bit of financial aid can help. The good news is that for those of us with military service connections, there are dozens and dozens of programs available to assist our family members find extra help with college tuition.

What made me think of College Scholarships as a topic for this month’s column was my monthly e-mail bulletin from the VFW. It’s time again for the VFW’s annual Voice of Democracy essay competition. I am a life member of the VFW, but the great part of the VOD program is that students do not have to be affiliated with the VFW to enter. Any high school student anywhere in the country can enter for an opportunity to be awarded scholarship money. My granddaughter lives in Arkansas, and the local VFW post in her hometown of Cabot will be sponsoring a local high student in the competition. So, no matter where your child or grandchild lives, there is most likely a local VFW post where they can participate in this excellent program. Below is some information about the program, along with a few other interesting scholarship opportunities specifically for the grandchildren of military veterans.

34
USS New York (LPD-21) is the fifth ship of the United States Navy named after the state of New York.

This is just a tiny sample of financial assistance opportunities that are available. For more, one of the most comprehensive lists I have found is available at www.usveteransmagazine.com/list-of-military-scholarships-for-service-members-spouses-and-dependents/.

• The Veterans of Foreign Wars has just opened entries for its Voice of Democracy patriotic essay contest. State winners receive a trip to Washington D.C., and a portion of $170,000 in national awards – including the top prize of a $35,00 scholarship. Competition is open to all students in grades 9-12 and there is no requirement to be affiliated with the VFW. Additional information is available at www.vfw.org/community/youth.

• AMVETS National Service Foundation offers three (3) $4,000 scholarships and one (1) $1,000 scholarship to deserving graduating high school seniors (child or grandchild) of an Honorably Served Veteran or Active-Duty member. The applicants must meet all requirements, provide proper documentation, and use the funds towards a full-time study at either an undergraduate college or university in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Funds will be distributed in $1,000 increments within a 4-year period. More information is available on line at www.amvets.org/scholarships.

• The Children of Warriors National Presidents’ Scholarship which is awarded annually by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), is available to the “daughters, sons, grandsons, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, [and] great-grandsons of Veterans who served in the Armed Forces” during or after World War II (“any time after December 7, 1941”). The scholarship amount is $5,000, which “may be used for tuition, books, fees, room, and board.” Information is available

on line at www.legion-aux.org/scholarships.

• The Navy League Foundation offers multiple scholarships to high school seniors who will attend an accredited institute of higher learning. Applicants must be a dependent or descendant of a current or former member of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine. Further information can be found at www.navyleague.org/programs/scholarships.

The Last Laugh:

A captain notices a light in the distance, on a collision course with his ship.

He turns on his signal lamp and sends, “Change your course, 10 degrees west.”

The light signals back, “Change yours, 10 degrees east.”

The captain is a little annoyed. He signals, “I’m a U.S. Navy captain. You must change your course, sir.”

The light signals back, “I’m a Seaman First Class. You must change your course, sir.”

Now the captain is mad. He signals, “I’m an aircraft carrier. I’m not changing my course.”

The light signals back a final message: “I’m a lighthouse. Your call.”

I invite you to contact me at: griff82001@gmail. com with suggestions for stories you’d like to see and ideas for topics that would be of interest to our veterans. Also - please let me know if you or someone you know would be interested in sharing their service story. Our TGO community would really enjoy getting to know you better! - Deb Griffin -

Fire Prevention Week 2023

The theme of Fire Prevention Week (Ocober 8-14) is safety while cooking. It is critical for residents of TGO to know that almost one half of all home fires involve cooking equipment. Cooking and an open flame are leading causes of home fires. Some tips for fire-safe cooking:

1. Always keep an eye on what you are cooking. For foods with longer cooking times, set a timer to monitor them.

2. Placing a lid on a burning pot will starve the fire of oxygen and extinguish it.

3. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove to avoid spilling contents. To prevent cooking fires, keep the stove top burners and oven clean.

4. Stay alert! Alcohol use or sleeping while cooking is a recipe for disaster. BE AWARE!

5. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.

6. Stay in the home while food is simmering, baking, or roasting. Check it regularly. Use a timer to remind you that food is cooking.

7. Keep appliance cords coiled and away from counter edges.

8. Baggy clothes can catch fire if they contact a gas flame or electric burner. Short or rolled up sleeves, please.

9. Create a “kid and pet-free zone” of at least three feet around the cooking area, both kitchen and campfire and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

With the cooking, eating and joyous socialization of the upcoming months, it would be a sad consequence of a cooking fire that could spoil fond memories of a unique and happy holiday season for you, your family and friends. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires and related deaths.

What Is A Firewise Community?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a national organization dedicated to the protection of life and property from fire. It has become a clearinghouse for regulations and standards which are used throughout the country.

The NFPA recognized that large communities were being developed next to and in some cases surrounded by large wildland areas. They also determined that these communities could be helpful to both themselves and the state and local government agencies involved in wildland fire protection. The question was how to accomplish this.

The result was the establishment of the Firewise USA (Firewise) program. This provided the structure and support for the establishment of Firewise Communities (sites) throughout the US. It was determined that each locality and/or subdivision could establish a Firewise group of its own. NFPA also realized that it would be beneficial if these local Firewise USA groups included state and local agencies. These sites, groups or committees are community volunteers who work with the community governing body, local and state officials to educate property owners of the dangers of wildfires and how to protect their property as well as developing and implementing plans for preventing and limiting the spread of wildfires.

As the program began to develop, NFPA established criteria for each Firewise site with goals and objectives along with a reporting system so that they could quantify results. Their plan was centered around four main areas. These areas are Organize, Plan, Do It, and Report.

The Firewise USA program has grown to 2076 Firewise Communities as of 2022. California has the most with 600 and Florida has 51. Overall Firewise USA compiled 2.2 million hours of volunteer hours nationwide last year. Each Firewise site is required to complete 1 hour of volunteer work per dwelling each year.

We here at TGO are surrounded by wildland and the threat for a wildland fire is real. That did not go unnoticed by a group of TGO residents, and this group led an effort to establish a Firewise group at TGO. This group consisted of Don Payne, Mike Lavery, Ted Jankowski, Ed Brown, and John Price were appointed to the first TGO Firewise Committee in January of 2010. Since then, Firewise has been working to educate residents of the need to provide a defensible space around their property and be diligent when using smoking materials and open flames.

Firewise also has been working with our outside partners, Florida Forest Service (FFS), Brevard County Fire/Rescue (BCFR), and the St. John’s River Water Management District (SJRWMD) in clearing the established Fire Breaks within and outside TGO. You may have seen the activity last spring when the FFS cleared the Fire Breaks on Plantation behind the Library or noticed the SJRWMD “Marshmaster” clearing along the Nature Trail from Addison Way to just past the bridge. Both these operations were in preparation for “Prescribed Fire/Burns” which will hopefully take place this late fall or winter, when “conditions are right”, meaning that everything, wind, soil moisture content, humidity, and a host of other factors are such that a burn can be safely preformed. This will be done by FFS. SJRWMD in coordination with CSA and BCFR.

What is a Prescribed Fire or Burn, you may ask. Prescribed fire is one of the most versatile and cost-effective tools forest managers use. Prescribed fire is used to reduce hazardous fuel buildups, thus providing increased protection to people, their homes, and the forest. While the area will look a little, well maybe real rough for a while, plant life will begin to grow, and the area will green up after these prescribed burns.

The Fire Breaks in the natural areas of TGO are designed to give firefighters a more advantageous area from which to fight any fires that develop. They also can slow the spread of fire. We are in the process of clearing the current fire breaks and evaluating if others are needed. Funding for these fire breaks comes from the FFS, and their crews have been conducting the clearing operations. We caution residents not to enter areas when this equipment is operating as material can be thrown and could cause injuries.

Your Firewise Committee is actively seeking ways to make The Great Outdoors safer from the threat of wildfires. We have a monthly meeting the first Wednesday of each month September through June in the Pavilion at 1:00 pm and residents are welcome. If you have any questions, all Committee members' contact information is in The Happenings.

Funny Thing Is… There Is No Whine in Wine Country

You’ve heard the famous movie line, “There’s no crying in baseball.” Well, there’s also no whine in Wine Country. I just got back from a trip into the wine country of North Georgia. My first time ever visiting a winery. OMG, how can you not come out of there a happy person? If the alcohol doesn’t perk you up, then LOOK up. Beautiful vistas of the Appalachians, acres of grape leaves just fluttering in the breeze, the server walking your way with another cheese and meat tray while bringing the next bottle of wine for you to try. I’ve never seen so many happy people in one place buzzed out of their minds since Woodstock. You know, Woodstock was for the young, but wineries are for everyone of legal age. I saw people in their 20’s hanging out with people in their 80’s and happy to be together. Yeah, they don’t whine, they wine, together. Now, I’ve never been a big wine drinker, but when in Rome, do as the Romans do. So in a winery, I don’t whine about the wine, I drink it. What a revelation. My doc said I need glasses. I’m like, no problem. Three glasses or four? Somehow I see the world much better after the third glass! And, for some reason, the more I drank, the better everyone looked. Huh? Eyeglasses don’t do that. My nutritionist said to eat more fruits. Again, no problem. Apple wine was my favorite, but also there was strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and kiwi wine. Mission accomplished. I was drinking wine with my wife the other day and she said, “I love you so much. I can’t imagine ever living without you.” I asked her if that was her or the wine talking. She said it was her talking to the wine. Ouch. I heard scientists are working on a new wine to stop older folks from having to go to the bathroom so much. It’s gonna be called Pinot More. So when it’s time to wind down, wine down. When it comes to wine, I like to make pour decisions and I do it on a case by case basis. Yes, sip back and relax and remember, the only whine in wine country is when there is no more wine. - Dr. Sammy -

Dry Tortugas National Park: This national park, located 70 miles off the coast of Key West, is home to Fort Jeff erson, one of the largest masonry structures in the Americas. It also features crystal-clear waters, snorkeling, and the elusive loggerhead sea turtle.

Ernest Hemingway's Six-Toed Cats: The Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West is home to dozens of polydactyl (six-toed) cats, descendants of Ernest Hemingway's own feline companions. These cats have become a famous attraction at the museum.

Fountain of Youth: St. Augustine, Florida, claims to be the site where Spanish explorer Ponce de León landed in search of the Fountain of Youth. Visitors can even drink from a spring in the city's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park.

Florida is home to over a 1.25 million alligators, which is more than the human population of some of its cities. You'll find them in lakes, rivers, swamps, and occasionally swimming pools! By the time you finish reading this there will be 100 more!

Skyscraper Swamp: Cypress Gardens, Florida's fi rst theme park, opened in 1936 and featured waterskiing performances in a botanical garden. Today, it's known as LEGOLAND Florida and features a Lego-themed water ski show.

Theme Park Capital: Florida boasts the highest number of theme parks per capita in the world. Orlando alone is home to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld, and more.

Coral Reefs: The Florida Keys are home to the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, making it a paradise for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

Skunk Ape Sightings: Florida has its own version of Bigfoot called the "Skunk Ape." This mythical creature is said to be a large, foul-smelling, ape-like being that roams the swamps and forests of the state.

Manatees and Mermaids: Crystal River, Florida, is famous for its population of gentle manatees. You can even swim with these "sea cows" in designated areas. Additionally, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park hosts underwater mermaid shows in natural springs.

Avocado Capital: Homestead, Florida, is known as the "Avocado Capital of the World" due to its thriving avocado industry and the annual Avocado Festival.

Florida boasts a coastline that stretches for approximately 1,350 miles. This extensive shoreline includes the mainland coastline along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the many coastal islands, bays, and estuaries.

Florida is often known for its unusual and sometimes bizarre news stories. While there are many strange incidents to choose from, one that gained significant attention was the "Florida Man" phenomenon. It's a term that became popular on social media and news outlets to describe a series of peculiar and often outrageous events involving individuals in Florida.

Sudoku Puzzles

SUDOKU puzzles have one solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row, column, and 3x3 square must contain one of each digit.

HARD EXPERT

Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Here’s a brief history of Sudoku, its origins, and the reasons behind its popularity. The puzzle’s origins can be traced back to the late 18th century in Switzerland, where a similar puzzle called “Latin Squares” was published in a local newspaper. However, the modern version of Sudoku was developed in the late 1970s by Howard Garns, an American architect and puzzle constructor from Connersville, IN. Garns created the puzzle and called it “Number Place.” He submitted it to Dell Magazines, where it was published in 1979. The puzzle gained significant popularity in Japan in the 1980s when it was introduced by the puzzle publisher Nikoli. Nikoli renamed the puzzle “Sudoku,” which roughly translates to “single number” in Japanese. The company refined the puzzle’s rules and introduced various solving techniques, turning it into a mainstream sensation in Japan.

OUR NEW CONTRACT

At our Town Hall Meeting this week on Wednesday, September 20,we had representatives from both PropRevs Technical Advisors and Spectrum to discuss our New Bulk Contract. Initially, an incorrect Channel Listing spread throughout Facebook - but it is the wrong list. TGO residents weren't too happy with what they saw, so in return, the meeting at the Manor was packed! Here is the actual story...

The New Bulk Contract is a 5-year deal with Spectrum, which is normal, and will begin on October 1, 2023. Our current Bulk Contract costs roughly $26.50/month and includes two set top boxes and 200Mbps Internet and the Bronze TV package. The New Bulk Contract will increase in cost to roughly $31.00/month and will include one set top box and one DVR with a 500Gb hard drive. There is also a cloud-based DVR option which will allow access to recorded programs from outside of TGO, but ONLY through the Spectrum App on your Internet-connected TV. There will be no changes to our current channel listing, except that some new channels may be added.

For those customers who already have a DVR at $5/month, they will have to contact Spectrum Customer Care at 833-697-7328 and request that the $5/month charge be dropped. If you call, let the Customer Care Rep know that you are a bulk contract customer at TGO.

Additionally, our Internet speed will be increased to 500Mbps, but that will not happen immediately, as Spectrum will be upgrading its network infrastructure to accommodate the new service. They have already begun to perform the upgrade, but no estimate as to when it will be completed.

For those who watch TV through a streaming service (ROKU, SLING, APPLE, et al.) via the Spectrum App, new channels are being added to the current list of between 80-90 channels.

Also discussed, though not part of the new contract, was Spectrum Mobile phone service. Spectrum is currently offering mobile service at $29.99/month for two lines and unlimited TALK, TEXT and DATA for one year. After that, the second line will be charged at the $29.99/month price. Many owners have signed up for this service and are quite satisfied with it.

All of the above information will be available to every owner. There were a couple of questions asked which the Spectrum rep will have to check on, but those answers will be included when CSA sends out the information on the new contract. Thank you, Chuck Benoit, for this summarization.
