MANAGER’S CORNER
Dear TGO Residents,
This is my first Managers Corner of 2025. I hope this new year brings you many days of laughter, adventure, good health and all the other things that make life special. If you have just arrived back to TGO for the winter season…Welcome Back! Our community is now in high season, with so many concerts, clubs, events and outdoor activities happening every day. It is wonderful to see golfers playing our course again, after nine long months of renovation. We are also seeing an increase in visits and sales at the Blue Heron Restaurant. I expect that 2025 will be a much better financial year for the Blue Heron and Golf Course, and we can put year 2024 behind us.
Our CSA office is buzzing with bar code requests and service tickets, and I wish to thank you for your patience when you call to schedule appointments for barcodes. The CSA office team is working diligently to stay on top of these requests. We are committed to serving you, and our team enjoys the challenges that this busy season presents us.
This is the time of year when you are called upon to get more involved in serving your community. Each owner is part of a subassociation or condo. Your annual meetings will happen sometime soon. Please check with your condo leadership and plan to attend your annual condo meetings to ensure there is a quorum.
The CSA Board will host their January Board Meeting next week, on Wednesday, January 15th at 3pm in the Manor. Prior to that meeting and beginning at 1pm you will have an opportunity to “Meet the Candidates” who are running for Board Chairman, Board of Directors and ARC Committee. Please come out and meet the people who have volunteered to represent you. The annual election will take place on Monday, January 27th and details are in The Happenings.
TruGreen was here this week to put fertilizer and herbicide on your lawns. We expect this recent snap of cold weather may brown-out some of the grass in your yard. Our Superintendent Shane Willey shared that these cold conditions would affect the color of the grass blades, but it doesn’t damage the grass root system. When we get warmer weather, the grass will green back up again. We have temporarily shut off the irrigation system to avoid overwatering to prevent a cold weather fungus from forming on the turf.
In closing, I want to thank the many TGO residents who generously contributed money to our 2024 Annual Employee Holiday Fund. This fund totaled over $18,000 this year. Fifty-seven of our eligible front-line, full-time CSA workers will receive over $300 cash bonus next week from you, our TGO residents. This is a blessing for those dedicated people who work so hard to keep TGO Great. On behalf of our front line staff, Thank You!
As always, please contact me this new year if you have questions or I can be of assistance to you.
Sincerely,
CSA Manager

FROM THE EDITOR
It’s 2025—what are you doing this year?
As I write this we are all about a week into another year. So, of course, it’s time to discuss resolutions! I don’t mean the usual stuff like: “this year I’m going to eat healthy”, “I resolve to read more books”, “This year I’m finally going to organize the garage” or similar statements of resolve. Don’t get me wrong, those are great and we should all strive to do them (although I don’t have a garage).
This is what I’m thinking: let’s all make this the year that we tell people how we feel, thank the people who have helped us in life, work diligently to heal conflict, and find (and appreciate) beauty in the world and people around us.
For me, that sounds like it would truly make 2025 a New Year.
In the meantime, enjoy this latest issue of The Happenings!

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops
As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.
NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

When you have an emergency at your residence and you need assistance you call “911”. You speak calmly to the 911 operator who will ask you :
“What is the nature of the EMERGENCY?” You describe what you see.
“What is the address of the EMERGENCY?”
DO YOU KNOW YOUR ADDRESS!!!?
• Can Emergency responders see your house or pad number?
• Can they see the number at night and in the rain?
• Does the vegetation obscure it?
• Is the number readable from either direction on your street?
• Did the numbers blow away during the foul weather last year?
• Are the numbers able to do their important job?
Park Manager, Billy Specht suggested that the CSA Office “will dispatch our crew to repaint address numbers on driveways. Simply call us for a work order. Please know that we only use white paint, so if your driveway is treated or you would prefer another color or design, then please seek other options. We are also happy to lend residents our number stencils if you wish to repaint the numbers yourself.”
House numbers can be purchased at local hardware stores. Again, make sure these numbers are visible to the roadway from either direction of travel.
I often recall responding to a suspected cardiac arrest as captain on a Miami/Dade ladder truck. No house numbers were visible. No one was curbside to flag us down. The home-owner had hung up! Other fire/rescue units were arriving. Metro Dade police were on the scene! Precious moments were being lost! Doors were being knocked on! Finally, a family member ran out to the crowded street to direct us to an unnumbered house. EMS did a fantastic job of patient support and we certainly had sufficient man-power to handle the rescue and the transport…. and the patient survived!
“Delayed Response” of Emergency Services is frustrating to responders and devastating to home owners, partiularly when CPR is delayed or a life is lost for lack of a clear address number!
CHECK YOUR HOUSE NUMBERS!

GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY – VOLUNTEER TODAY!**
The Nature Center is an integral part of the TGO community, and it relies 100% on our volunteer staff. Without them (“you”), things don’t get done. Please consider donating a couple of hours of your time a month to help.
HELP THE NATURE CENTER MAKE MONEY
Sandy Juba needs help selling furniture and high-end items. We need that special person to organize/accept donated items at our storage unit, write up an ad, post it on websites/facebook, then just sell it! Get together with some friends and make it happen! Call the best trainer around, Sandy, for details at 321543-0502.
HELP THE NATURE CENTER STAY LOOKING GOOD
Ron Peeples is looking for groundskeeping help in three areas: weeding around the building, gathering downed palm fronds, and cleaning off outside decks/picnic tables. It takes minimal time once or twice a month on your schedule. Sign-up is a month at a time. Bring your friends and make it a team effort! Ron can give pointers. Give him a call at 407-509-0486 or email him at ebnflo2001@yahoo.com.
HELP TGO KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NATURE CENTER
Do you enjoy learning about what’s upcoming in our community? You can help spread the word about Nature Center activities by placing it in The Happenings, on Facebook and on the NC website. Coordinate the information from readily available resources within the Nature Center and post it to these three communications every two weeks. Sound like fun? To find out more details, email Pat Dick at patdick@gmail.com or Donna Pittman at pittster@verizon.net.
HELP KEEP THE NATURE CENTER SECURE
The Nature Center depends on a team to help keep our building secure. We’ve been fortunate to have a coordinator working with our team members who perform the task, but now it’s time to say goodbye. Huge thank you, Cinamon Nedvin, for doing this! It’s not time-consuming and is an important job of maintaining a list and scheduling our volunteers. Please consider offering a bit of your time. For details contact Pat Dick at patdick@gmail.com.

NATURE CENTER TRAILS
December 30, 2024 was a very fine day for a walk and light maintenance on the Betty Salter Trail on the south end of the trail at Buck Lake. On the one-way mile long walk, we went past three small lakes and a canal with a cement weir one foot wide to cross.
January 6, 2024 was a walk on the Pisarz trail to the Karen Early spur. Ripe beautyberries and orange trees were visible on the spur as was the rare two-headed palm tree on the Pisarz. We took the spur to avoid an active eagles’ nest (visible also from the Nature Trail) that has eggs in it.
Two-headed palm tree, Pisarz Trail
We’d love to have you join us for the next trail hike! To find out more, message or call Brian Grande at 407-766-7867 or on Facebook group “TGO Nature Trails,” email SkinDvr2000@ yahoo.com. Also, check out the all-trails brochure in the Nature Center for an overview of our trails.

A true nature lover, John spent many years as the TGO pond manager, coordinator of fish stocking efforts, and he established TGO as a monarch butterfly waystation. Many recalled his talks at our monthly information meetings. He was also an avid bass fisherman and honored by BassMaster Magazine and Florida Today.

HOW DO I...?
So, I asked my best friend ChatGPT “Is there a special word for the action of spending a few minutes scrolling thru one reel after another regardless of what the photo shows...then finding out 2 hours have passed?”
ANSWER: Oh, yes, that’s called a “reel-lapse”—the black hole of time that happens when you innocently open Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook, thinking you’ll just “watch a couple,” only to resurface two hours later wondering what year it is.
Alternatively, you could call it “scrolliosis”—that chronic condition where your thumb gets stuck in the upward swipe motion, even as your brain screams, “Stop already!”
Maybe not earth-shattering info, but to use a search engine to find (or make up) something so obscure would have taken hours on Google or other ad-laden quicksand online sites.
But how do you know if it’s safe? Happily, I’ve done a ton of research on CHATGPT and other AI Models, and found out:
Why ChatGPT is Your Safest, Smartest AI Buddy
1. Privacy is Their Middle Name
Unlike some shady AI platforms (cough “data-siphoning machines” cough), ChatGPT doesn’t go snooping through your personal files or try to steal your online identity. OpenAI has implemented top-notch safeguards to ensure your data isn’t used for training the model unless you explicitly allow it. Biggest plus? Apple has integrated ChatGPT into it’s newest operating systems! (See if your device has it ‘baked in’ at facebook.com/MyAppleTechKris)
2. Built for Clarity, Not Chaos
With ChatGPT, you’re not going to get cryptic responses or links to some questionable corners of the internet. They deliver clear, fact-based answers. Basically, if you want AI that’s informative and not an internet conspiracy theorist, you’re at the right place.
3. Custom-Tailored for Your Needs
ChatGPT can be customized to align with your vibe. Need it to be polite and professional? Done. Want it witty and sarcastic? Oh, honey, we’ve got that covered too! Whatever your style, ChatGPT adapts, making it the perfect assistant for your unique needs.
4. Low-Risk, High-Reward
Your safety is their top priority. Unlike the countless apps that love to vacuum up your contacts, photos, and deepest secrets, ChatGPT keeps it simple and secure. No unwanted notifications, no backdoor tracking, no creepy “Hey, we see you’re browsing for shoes” ads popping up later. (FYI, there are NO ads, funding is by grants, subscriptions, partnerships, licensing, and investments. OpenAI was set up as a capped-profit com-
pany. This means its goal isn’t to milk you dry, but to build advanced AI while staying financially sustainable.
5. Always Improving, Never Intruding OpenAI constantly updates ChatGPT to make it smarter and safer. You don’t have to worry about it becoming self-aware and taking over your life. It’s here to assist, not to outsmart you.
6. No Downloads, No Drama ChatGPT works right in your browser or app—no sketchy software to install. Plus, the sleek interface makes it easy to use, whether you’re a seasoned techie or a total beginner.
7. Ethics Are Baked In OpenAI is big on responsible AI development. This isn’t a fly-by-night operation—it’s a company invested in creating tools that help, not harm. ChatGPT is like the golden retriever of AI: loyal, trustworthy, and unlikely to bite your hand.
8. Always Improving, Never Intruding OpenAI constantly updates ChatGPT to make it smarter and safer. You don’t have to worry about it becoming self-aware and taking over your life. It’s here to assist, not to outsmart you.
WHAT DO YOU DO NOW?
What are you tackling in 2025? Even if all you have is a vague idea, AI can help you with an action plan. Here are a few prompts to try with ChatGPT
“Pretend you’re a life coach who wants to help me have my best year yet. Help me figure out some goals for 2025. Ask me questions one at a time to help me decide what to focus on.”
“My goal is [fill in the blank]. What are some obstacles that might come up and ways I can overcome them? Give me specific examples for each obstacle.”
“I want to [fill in the blank], but it feels overwhelming, and I don’t know where to start. Can you help me by breaking it down into more manageable tasks?”
“I have a [fill in the blank], but it’s not working right! Help, what do I do now?”
GIVE THESE A TRY at CHATGPT.com, and remember, AI isn’t going anywhere: Instead of sticking your head in the sand, make this the year you embrace AI!

Norovirus: What You Need to Know About the Stomach Bug Surge
Symptoms and Transmission
Norovirus, often called the “stomach flu” or “cruise ship virus,” is making headlines as outbreaks rise across the U.S., including in Florida. This highly contagious virus is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in the United States, affecting 19 to 21 million people annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Symptoms of norovirus include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain, typically appearing 12 to 48 hours after exposure and lasting one to three days. Unlike food poisoning, which often occurs shortly after eating contaminated food, norovirus symptoms may take longer to develop and can spread through direct contact with an infected person, consuming contaminated food or water, or touching infected surfaces.
Norovirus thrives in closed, crowded environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and cruise ships. While it’s notorious for causing outbreaks on cruise ships, these account for only 1% of reported cases. The virus is resilient, surviving on surfaces and in the environment for extended periods, particularly in cooler, drier conditions. Outbreaks peak from November to April, with activity highest in late fall and winter.
The Florida Situation
Florida has been particularly affected, reporting 24 confirmed outbreaks between September 2023 and October 2024, second only to California. The CDC noted a 36% increase in norovirus outbreaks nationwide compared to the same period last year. Gatherings during holidays like Thanksgiving have likely contributed to this rise.
Prevention and Treatment
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for norovirus. The best prevention strategies include:
• Handwashing: Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the restroom or before eating. Hand sanitizers are less effective against norovirus.
• Surface Disinfection: Clean and disinfect surfaces with EPA-approved products effective against norovirus, especially in high-traffic areas.
• Food Safety: Avoid raw or undercooked shellfish and ensure food handlers practice strict hygiene.
• Isolation: Infected individuals should stay home and avoid contact with others until 48 hours after symptoms resolve.
If infected, stay hydrated by drinking water or electrolyte-replenishing beverages. Dehydration is a common complication, especially in children and older adults.
Norovirus
vs. Other Illnesses
Norovirus is often mistaken for food poisoning or other gastrointestinal conditions. While bacterial infections like Salmonella or E. coli can also cause diarrhea and abdominal pain, they often include fever and last longer. Norovirus symptoms are intense but short-lived. Chronic conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are not contagious and persist for months.
A Growing Public Health Concern
The CDC’s surveillance systems indicate that norovirus outbreaks are surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Environmental factors, such as cooler temperatures and low humidity, contribute to its spread. Researchers are also studying how climate change might alter the virus’s seasonality and transmission patterns.
Staying Informed
While most people recover from norovirus without medical intervention, it’s essential to remain vigilant. Alerting healthcare providers can help monitor outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations, such as young children and older adults.
By taking preventive measures and staying informed, you can reduce your risk of falling ill during norovirus season.
