MANAGER’S CORNER
Dear TGO Residents,
Mark your calendars! It’s Time for our 2025 Annual TGO Members Meeting. The meeting will occur on Wednesday, February 5th at 2pm in The Manor. This is our ‘TGO State of the Union’ address. You will hear about our 2024 accomplishments, and learn about our 2025 draft budget. You will hear about our future plans to keep our TGO community thriving. We will premiere a video to showcase the golf course renovation we accomplished this year. We will also recognize a Volunteer of the Year. Please attend in person or watch on TV, Chanel 732. If you cannot be there in person, please submit a proxy so we have a quorum to conduct our business. Seating is first-come first served, doors open at 1pm, and you will need to present an ID to prove you’re an owner before being admitted.
Wildfire is a real threat to TGO, and responding to it is something we practice every year. Today, Friday, January 24th, is our annual Wildfire Emergency Evacuation Exercise, taking place at approximately 10am. Volunteers from our Firewise Committee, CSA board members, maintenance staff and courtesy patrol officers will participate. Representatives from Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Brevard County Fire and Rescue (BCFR), Florida State Forestry Department, and St Johns Water Management District (SJWMD) may also join us for this exercise. These agencies are invited to bring in emergency and firefighting equipment, and provide direction and oversight during the drill. This drill tests our readiness, emergency communications, and cooperation with local emergency authorities in the event of a fast-moving wildfire threat. No action is expected from our residents, and nobody will be asked to evacuate. We will share a few photos of this drill in the next issue of The Happenings.
It’s time to de-clutter, so gather any paperwork that needs to be destroyed. The CSA Safety Committee will host our 6th, yes, 6th annual complimentary Shred Day for TGO residents on Thursday, March 13th from 1pm-3pm in the parking lot north of The Manor. A rain date is planned for Friday, March 14th if needed. This is a drive-through event, and safety committee volunteers will be on hand to assist you with boxes.
The Board of Directors approved a Mission Statement for the CSA at their January board meeting. It is certainly worth sharing and repeating, so here it is:
“The Community Services Association (CSA) strives to provide exceptional management of The Great Outdoors Premier R.V. / Golf Resort, Inc., to maintain the status of the Resort as a first-class community by upholding our community guidelines, providing quality amenities and services to enrich our residents’ quality of life, maintaining and improving our facilities, and protecting the future of the community.”
As always, it is my mission to lead the CSA team to accomplish this statement above. Please contact me if you have questions or I can be of assistance to you.
Sincerely,
CSA Manager

The Coach Club Gang put on another rocking event starring Johnny Danger Live. Frank Whitmore, John Drugan and Tony Cullen along with their wives Kathy Drugan, Suzy Whitmore and Brenda Cullen… and the voice of reason, Judy Lyons, put in lots of hours to make sure this annual event was another fun success.
FROM THE EDITOR
Blink and you’ll miss it!
One of the many dynamics of Florida life that makes me smile is how the seasons and holidays are handled in the stores (and, to be honest, in some yards!). October has orange and brown everywhere, along with pumpkins and red maple leaves festooning stores.
Then it’s SNOW, and Santa, and homes decorated with lights. It’s all delightful fun and often impressively creative. But, a few weeks into January all the iconic New England winter-time stuff disappears and it’s back to Summer! (Well, except for the weather this particular January.)
The Winter up north where I come from can start to be a serious challenge by this time of year. The cold days feel endless and the sun sets SO early. I was reminded of all that recently on a trip to Massachusetts for four days. Yikes! Even though I’ve lived in Florida for over seven years now, it’s still delicious fun knowing that I have a pretty good chance of having some beach weather in a week or two.
Speaking of delicious fun I got some of that at this week’s Coach Club Block Party. TGO likes to have FUN! Photos on the cover and starting on p46. There’s lots more in this latest issue of The Happenings, so I hope you enjoy it and find it useful.

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops
As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

TRANSMISSION OF WILDFIRES: EMBERS
- By Ed Brown
Fires on the ground are dangerous. They move because the wind moves them laterally: grass burning bush to bush. Sometimes they climb a tree, burning the bark as they ascend or they take the fast route by burning a climbing vine, like potato vine.
That GROUND FIRE now becomes a CROWN FIRE and, with help from lateral winds , it is off through the tree tops at top speed. Burning embers fall to the ground to start new ground fires that spread to homes, cars and vegetation on the ground. Lateral winds like the 100 mph Santa Anna winds or a hurricane continue this vicious cycle and whole communities are cremated! Does that sound familiar? Daily news reports of California Wild Fires continue to keep us aware. Beware of the dangers of BURNING EMBERS being driven by strong winds through the tree tops to fall and ignite new ground fires.
So, What can we do in TGO to discourage this vicious cycle?
1. We cut and improve our Fire Breaks. You may wish to join the Firewise Volunteers in this weekly effort. Ed and Kari Olefirowicz coordinate the TGO trail and Firebreak maintenance efforts. Their phone numbers are listed below. It would be great to have you help trimming our Fire Breaks. We meet, usually on a Tuesday morning about 9 am, on the trail.
2. Call Ed or Kari for details.
3. Support CSA in their part of developing and improving fire breaks.
4. We can strive to keep TGO lean clean and green:
a. Don’t allow trash to accumulate outside your home.
b. Pick up vegetative waste for disposal. Stack it roadside for CSA removal.

5. Don’t stack firewood outside.
6. Keep roof valleys clear, gutters and downspouts too.
7. Don’t store flammable items under decks or porches.
8. Make sure ventilation screening is in place so that burning embers are kept out.
9. Don’t plant trees or bushes close to your exterior walls. A burning bush can ignite a home.
10. Don’t use vegetative mulch near the house. Rock mulch is fireproof and does not degrade.
At the time of this writing the Santa Anna winds are moderating at night but resurrecting after sunrise. Homes and belongings are turning to ashes. Fire brick chimneys are stark monuments marking the burned out homesites. Firefighters, at dawn, continue their fight with help from their brother smoke eaters from Canada, Mexico, and other areas of the U.S. Unfortunately, water supplies are unreliable. Hydrants and reservoirs are dry, Santa Anna winds crank up after sunrise and the burning flying embers continue the attack, only to be stopped by the Pacific Ocean! They fall, fizzle out and die in the ocean. Ashore, the ruthless damage has been done!
Our thoughts and prayers go to the residents of Southern California! May they survive this terrible test and may we all be firewise and safe in the future.

FEATURE: BOBCATS IN OUR BACKYARD
Here are some fascinating facts about the bobcats living around us here at TGO that make them one of nature’s most captivating creatures:
• Bobcats are natural-born sneaks. They blend into the Florida landscape. If you do spot one, count yourself lucky. It’s like catching a glimpse of a ghost.
• They are very adaptable, from Florida swamps to northern woodlands.
• They are solitary hunters with sharp eyesight and powerful jaws. They prey on small mammals, birds and sometimes reptiles. They sneak up quietly and pounce.
• They are often mistaken for house cats but are about twice the size with longer legs and larger paws.
• They are solitary creatures, each with its own range, which it defends from others.
• They are adaptable in their habitat and diet.
• Females give birth to a litter of one to six kittens, which are raised in a den and hidden. Bobcat moms are protective, staying with the young until they can venture out on their own.
• Consider bobcats a sign of a healthy ecosystem. It means the habitat can support a variety of wildlife. Bobcats are like “canaries in the coal mine.”
The next time you’re out walking, remember, you might be sharing your space with one of the wildest cats around, but good luck getting a picture of one, especially as beautiful as this by Jim Dick! Per Pat Dick, he took it behind the TGO library while it posed, and he snapped away. “Of all the photos he took, he said this was his favorite.” It hangs in the Nature Center museum.
NATURE CENTER TRAILS
January 13th was a beautiful day for a hike in the Canaveral Marshes Conservation Area, which is part of the St. Johns River flood plain, via the Watson Trail. The total trail length is about 2.3 miles. We did some light trail maintenance along the way and viewed the bald eagle nest.

THANK YOU, TGO
To the TGO Community:
On December 7th family and friends gathered at TGO to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of my father, Jim Coyne, of Grande Haven Drive.
While the credit for the beautiful weather that day goes to Mother Nature, the rest goes to the many local friends who were incredibly kind and helpful in our time of need. To all who brought food that alleviated then need to worry about cooking as we prepared for the day, to the many who volunteered to help with whatever we needed, and to the folks who helped stage the loverly service that day, I and my family are deeply grateful for your time and effort. Everything went beautifully and smoothly with nothing to undermine our time focusing on Dad. I rest easier knowing Mom will be fine with such a great group of friends and neighbors around her.
Sincerely, Dave Coyne
TGO HITS THE LANES!

Recently, the open bowling group from TGO came together for a lively outing at River Lanes in Titusville. The event was all about fun and camaraderie, with bowlers of all skill levels taking turns to roll strikes, spares, and the occasional gutter ball. Laughter and cheers echoed through the alley as everyone cheered each other on, celebrated their victories, and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Between frames, there was plenty of socializing, a few friendly rivalries, and even some creative bowling techniques. Everyone embraced the spirit of fun, making this outing a fantastic way for TGO residents to connect, share some laughs, and enjoy a classic pastime together.

TIP #2 iMessage: Fun Tricks You Didn’t Know You Needed!
Think iMessage is just for sending “Hi, how are you?” texts? Think again! Apple’s messaging app is full of delightful, practical, and downright fun features that’ll make you feel like a tech wizard.
Whether you want to make your messages sparkle (literally) or share a quick voice note, iMessage has you covered. Let’s dive into some easy tricks you’ll love—and actually use!
(For quick video directions, go to: facebook.com/MyAppleTechKris)
1. Add Some Pizzazz: Press and hold the SEND button to add effects like balloons, fireworks, or confetti to your message. Perfect for birthdays or just because!
2. Send a Voice Note: Tap and hold the microphone icon to record a quick message—great for when typing feels like a chore.
3. Use Reactions: Hold your finger on an incoming message and pick a reaction—thumbs up, heart, or even a “haha” to keep the conversation lively. More icon choices now!
4. Keep your favs on top: Swipe right on a chat and tap the pin icon to keep your favorites at the top. No more scrolling to find them! (9 people max)
5. Share Photos or Videos Instantly: Tap the camera icon to snap a photo or share one from your library in seconds.
6. Search Messages: Need to find that address or recipe someone sent you? Use the search bar at the top of the Messages app and type word(s) that you’re looking for.
7. Handwrite a Drawing: Tap the “+” icon to the left of the text box and select “Digital Touch”… Tap some colors and draw a picture. Your friends and grandkids will think it’s magic when they watch the picture draw itself!
8. Use Stickers or GIFs: Tap the “+” icon to the left of the text box to send funny stickers or animated GIFs. (Psst, you can make your own animated GIF from an outlined live photo)
9. Share Your Location: Tap the “+” button and select “Location” to let a loved one know where you are.
Who knew messaging could be this fun? Try these out and surprise someone today!

Funny Thing Is… February The
Month of Love.
Yes Valentines Day, American Heart Month, Washington’s Birthday, the beginning of Spring Training in baseball.
Don’t you just LOVE February?
I’ll tell you what I love most about the 2nd month of the year. When it becomes the 3rd month of the year. Yeah, when it’s over.
I’m not a fan of cold weather, barren trees, dead flowers, or Eastern Standard Time. It’s dreary enough in the month of February without the sun setting a couple hours after lunch. Also, if I’m gonna freeze can we at least get a little snow in Florida so it’s pretty and can we keep the sun up until the working troops can get to their cars.
Open House Tues 1-4 pm!
I would LOVE to go straight from New Years Day to Spring Break without all the bone chilling, dark days in between. But alas, as the old saying goes, you can’t get to heaven without going through a little hell, so in the same respect, you can’t get to a nice, warm Spring Break without going through a little winter.
ALEICIA FRAGOMENI 321-759-3966
There are other special days in February you may not know about. Groundhog Day is February 2nd and National Weatherman’s Day is three days later on the 5th. No lie.
Hmmm. Wonder why we celebrate the rodent telling the weather first?
And can somebody tell me why National Children’s Dental Health Month is the same month we give them all that candy for Valentines Day?
Did you also know that February 7th is National Wave ALL Your Fingers at Your Neighbor’s Day? Really? Only 1 day of the year for that? I wonder how many fingers they’re using the rest of the year. I think I will LOVE getting out of February, but first we have to get into it next week!###

Comets smell like rotten eggs.
A comet smells like rotten eggs, urine, burning matches, and… almonds. Traces of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, sulphur dioxide, and hydrogen cyanide were all found in the makeup of the comet 67P/Churyumove-Gerasimenko. Promotional postcards were even commissioned in 2016 carrying the pungent scent of a comet.
Earth’s poles are moving.
This magnetic reversal of the North and South Pole has happened 171 times in the past 71 million years. We’re overdue a flip. It could come soon, as the North Pole is moving at around 55 kilometres per year, an increase over the 15km per year up until 1990.
You can actually die laughing.
And a number of people have, typically due to intense laughter causing a heart attack or suffocation. Comedy shows should come with a warning.
