Halloween With Diane and Greg

They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're all together ooky, The Mackey family! Well, they're certainly not creepy or ooky, but their Halloween extravaganza is definitely mysterious and spooky. If you haven't driven around the Hidden Lakes area and seen the Halloween display at 336 Harmony Lane, you need to jump in your cart and go do that. Greg Mackey and Diane Falusi somehow manage to outdo themselves each year with a spectacular display of skeletons, pumpkin-head creatures and a projector display that is almost impossible to explain. You can learn more about their passion for Halloween and the technical side of how it works on page 66.

Project Lifesaver

There have been a few incidents where some of our elderly residents have wandered away from their house and fortunately, with the support of local neighbors, CSA Patrol and Project Lifesaver, were all returned safely to their homes with the use of a simple wrist transmitter. Project Lifesaver is designed to track and locate lost individuals. They work in conjunction with our Brevard County Sheriff's Community Services Unit. This is a great solution for families who have members with Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia, Down Syndrome and other related disorders. If you live in TGO and have a loved one who could use this service, please read more on page 28.

Dear TGO Community, Fall is my favorite time of the year for many reasons. I welcome the dry, cool breezes and shorter days that replace the summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms. I am happy that our CSA staff who work outside are feeling some relief from the heat and humidity. I am thankful that the tropics are beginning to cool down and the threat of hurricanes decrease. Finally, I enjoy the annual arrival of our seasonal residents returning to their Florida homes here at TGO. The return of these seasonal residents brings a renewed energy into our community. It is exciting to see our community come alive again with many social events. This issue of The Happenings is thick with activities, clubs and events designed to re-connect you with friends, and opportunities to make new friends. Fall is also a time when we wrap up our summer improvement projects, and we begin discussing new CSA business and planning future improvements. Much of our new business begins at the committee level. Running the business of the association requires participation and engagement from our owners. There are now several openings on committees here at TGO. Are you interested in getting more involved in your community? Your new voice may help bring a different perspective to the table. You will find advertisements for committee vacancies on pages 12 and 13 of this issue of The Happenings. Applications to join a committee are found here in the CSA office. Keep your eye out for more committee vacancies in future issues. This month we will hold our first CSA Board of Directors meeting of the season on Wednesday, October 18 at 3:00 pm in The Manor. Serving as a board member is a time-consuming and sometimes thankless job. In my position, I see firsthand how much effort these volunteers put forth on behalf of our owners and our community, without compensation or favor. They conduct research, serve on committees, and spend time preparing for board meetings. Our chairman Cliff Creech leads the board, and he puts a ton of effort and time attending meetings, answering inquiries, and participating in long-range visioning for our community. As the “board meeting” season begins, please consider taking a moment to express your appreciation to these owners for giving up their personal time to keep our community moving forward. I also ask that you take time to attend a board meeting, or tune in on Channel 732, to watch our community business take place. I hope you will notice our efforts to tidy up and prepare our community for a busy fall/winter season. We’ve recently made some improvements to the Entrance Archway, including some touch up paint and some improved lighting. We’ve also been cleaning up our road shoulders and lake banks. Next week all of our common area buildings will be pressure washed. After some delays, we are completing our last major project of the summer season, a renovation of our old Oak Cove Bathhouse. We expect to re-open this bathhouse by the end of October. If you are returning to the community, and you notice changes or improvements, I hope you will take a minute to reach out to me and share your feedback, good or bad, your comments are always welcome. Sincerely,

Billy Specht CSA Manager

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES! Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge. Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

Here is how it works...

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span • Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries • Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition • Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance. We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process. This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited. Call to make an appointment...

321-268-4882

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

Community Information & Notices CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. Please do not allow pets to • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. urinate on trash or debris. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. The crew has to pick this up! • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes. AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Community Information & Notices Employee(s) of the Quarter

This quarter, we are recognizing a Team! Chris Berry has worked for TGO om and off for about seven years. Breshawn McDonald has been on irrigation for over a year and a half. They both worked hard on the lawn crew and were both promoted to the Irrigation crew because of their positive attitude, great attendance record , willingness to learn, and positive attitudes regardless of the situation. They are always smiling in the mornings, happy to get to work in this community. Recently, Chris received a certification in the operation of Heavy Equipment, specifically Excavator and Front end loader, two pieces of equipment we currently have in our fleet. Chis and Breshawn are learning so much in this position and have shown much growth since their employment. They have a lot of potential and we can’t wait to see what the future has to offer and what doors will open for them. Everyday they take initiative with work orders, tackling challenges in the field. Servicing the community with a positive attitude has made a great impression with homeowners and they receive many compliments because of this. "Great Job" to both Chris and Breshawn - keep it up and you will go far here at TGO.

Breast Cancer Golf Tournament One of our more important golf tournaments held at our TGO Golf Course happens this October 23 for Breast Cancer Awareness month. This is the eighth year for this tournament which was started by TGO/LGA. This is the seventh year this tournament has joined forces with the Jess Parrish Medical Center Foundation. The TGO Ladies Golf Association is currently considered an Emerald Level Donator and their contributions are proudly displayed on the Circle Of Life donation placque in the front of the hospital. "Our hopes this year," explained Lynne, "is to have another successful fund-rasing year and increase our contributions up to the Diamond Level." All the money raised from this tournament stays in Brevard County and goes to providing resources to the Parrish Medical Center’s Cancer Care Boutique. The boutique provides necessary resources (available at no cost to patients) to assist with the physical and emotional well-being of cancer patients in North Brevard and throughout the county. The Boutique provides wigs, turbans, hats, camisoles, bras and prostheses. The Boutique is available to patients with all types of cancer. The money also provides life-saving mammograms to those under-insured and uninsured. Funds also go to the Parrish Healthcare Cancer and Survivor Support Group. They provide counseling to anyone going through cancer or to the families of patients. Over the past six years we (the TGO/LGA) have made a considerable donation to Parrish and have been recognized by them as Emerald level donors on their recognition wall. If you are a golfer, please consider signing up for this tournament - all the details are in this issue on Page 10. It's a great cause and it's lots of fun. There is also a luncheon included after the tournament along with raffles for custom carrying bags, quilts and more.

Annual Gift Basket Raffle

All proceeds from the annual gift basket raffle at the Artisan Market on Saturday, November 4 help support The Nature Center. Martha Henderson and her team put together and raffle off approximately 60 themed gift baskets. Some of the past themed baskets included Holiday, Bath, Kitchen, Baby, Pets, Tea Lover’s, Snack and Kids baskets. Even a Man's basket with chips and beer and other manly snacks. They sell envelopes of 24 tickets for $5 for you to put into the drawings of numerous baskets or put all your tickets into that one favorite basket that you’d like to win. So splurge on yourself and buy several envelopes! All of the baskets and their contents are donated. You may donate individual items for the group to put into baskets or an entire completed basket. The Artisan Market is on Saturday, November 4, but the group needs donations ahead of time to put these beautiful baskets together. Martha will have a table at the Nature Center’s Fall Fun Day on October 21 to show you what sort of items they put into the baskets. Stop by her table to chat or donate. Or you can give her a call at 980-239-0950 to arrange for your donations.

AT THE MANOR Raptors, Bats and Snakes - OH MY! They may make you shudder a bit but they all play a very important role in nature. Learn more about them so you’ll shudder a bit less and admire their important contributions. And Bees! You may be surprised at all of the items that come to us through bees - from yummy treats to soothing skin balms. The beekeeper and his daughters will answer your questions and also have some of their products available to purchase. Representatives from numerous nature related organizations will also be on hand to share their knowledge with you: • TGO Wildlife Rescue Team • Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival • Indian River Anthropological Society • Space Coast Audubon Society • Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge • TGO Firewise Committee • St. Johns River Water Management District • The Enchanted Forest • TGO NatureScape • And, of course, the TGO CLOWNS will be on hand to delight you with their antics and give you a glitter tattoo (donations accepted).

Fire - Threat Reduction

By Ed Brown

Fire is one of man’s most basic tools. It provides heat that dispels the biting cold of a winter day. That same heat can cook raw food and make it both palatable and digestible. It can boil and purify drinking water. Fire changed the harsh ancient world. Threat Reduction #1: Get down on the floor. Stay low, beneath the smoke and heat. Crawl on your hands and knees, to an exit. Get Out! Practice this drill blindfolded with lights out. Your family may laugh at your mistakes. When it’s their turn, you can laugh at them. The bottom line is that this drill seems overly simplistic until you try it. Remember, your life could hang in the balance. Take it seriously! Threat #2: Fire is Black: The flame is bright, but the black smoke hides all. Did you ever wonder why a movie or tv show of a fire scene has so much detail… Because It’s a Movie! They can’t photograph in the dark! Threat Reduction #2: same as TR#1: Get down, Stay Low, Crawl to an exit. Get Out! Fire is Fast. Your home can be filled with thick, black smoke in seconds. You could have only seconds to escape, before the black smoke fills your room, your home, your lungs. Threat Reduction #3: Threat same as TR# 1 and 2: Get Down, Stay Low, Crawl to an exit. Get Out! What if your exit is the RV exit window? Can you climb out and safely descend? Have you ever tried? An exit ladder or a knotted rope, any means of getting out and down to ground level will work. Hang by your hands on the window sill, then drop and get away! Even jumping out or falling out of the “escape window” will probably be less traumatic than being consumed by the fire. Most RV escape windows are 6 feet off the ground. Once outside, get away! Don’t go back into a burning structure! Threat #4: Fire is Deadly! You know that and by now you probably have the TR strategies memorized. Have you noticed that they are all just about the same? That makes it easier to remember them. I know it’s more unpleasant stuff to think about and plan for in terms of threat reduction. Is it worth the effort? Is it worth your survival if your home should catch fire?

Funny Thing Is… ESP is not a Sports Network

Even though I may have never met you, I can tell you something about yourself you may not have known. You have Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) and you didn’t even know it. No, not the sports network, but the ability to see things without actually having to see them. Intrigued? Here’s the proof. You can sit out in your front yard and tell the age of the drivers coming down your street without ever looking in the car. You already do it without thinking about it. For example, if you see a car racing down your street and taking the speed bumps like they were Evel Knievel, squealing around turns almost on two wheels, and honking the horn if you look good in those shorts you’re wearing, how old do you think the driver is? Do you think they are 1) Senior Citizen (60+ years old), 2) Parents of College kids (50-60 years old), 3) Mid Lifer (30’s - 40’s), or 4)Teenager to early 20’s? If you see another car coming and it’s going so slow the snails are outracing it, and when it approaches the speed bump it doesn’t look too likely to make it over without a push, how old do you think the driver is (see choices above)? Now, if you see a car driving the speed limit, slowing down when passing yards where kids are playing, and smiling politely no matter how good you look in those shorts, how old do you think the driver is? I’m guessing that you’re guessing correct 90% of the time. Try it a different way. If you’re still sitting there and you see a car backing out of the driveway so fast it almost slams into the neighbor’s mailbox, and you can hear the gears screaming for mercy as the driver goes from reverse to drive as it races away, how old do you think the driver is? What about a different car, very slowly back out with people diving out of the way because the driver obviously isn’t looking back, and when it gets to the center of the street time seems to stop, the sun sets, the Space Station circles the Earth twice, and then the car very gradually starts moving forward, how old do you think the driver is? You see what I mean. You had ESP all along and didn’t even know it. - Dr. Sammy -

Bringing Halloween Magic to TGO For Diane Falusi and Greg Mackey, Halloween isn't just a holiday; it's a passionate obsession. They are the kind of couple that their friends often jokingly refer to as "the Halloween and Christmas people." While Diane takes the lead in orchestrating their holiday decorations, Greg lends a hand, saying, "Okay, Honey, I'll help you build it." Together, they provide entertainment for the TGO community, blending creativity, technology, and a whole lot of spooky spirit. Before the pandemic, Diane and Greg would go all out for Halloween, dressing up in extravagant costumes each year. However, COVID-19 temporarily put a damper on their Halloween spirit. But now, as restrictions have eased, they are back on track, planning for this next Halloween social. Their love for Halloween took an unexpected turn when Diane discovered the world of Projection Mapping. She began delving into this complex art form last year, however, it turned out to be more intricate than anticipated, leading them to scale down their efforts to just projections in their front window. This year, they decided to start early, working on their Halloween projection mapping project since June. The process involves developing numerous scenes, some lasting three minutes and others five. Their repertoire includes iconic elements from "The Exorcist," "Thriller," Disney's "Haunted Mansion," Michael Myers, and the Mad Hatter, among others. These scenes run on a loop, starting when darkness falls and continuing until about 9:30 pm. Projection Mapping isn't a plug-and-play affair. It requires meticulous planning and precise execution. Greg constructed a platform for the projector, complete with fans to keep it cool during operation, and speakers. The angle and location of the projector are critical for the projection to work correctly. They had to outline their entire house, in-

66

cluding the perimeter, windows, and gutters, similar to an Etch-a-Sketch, a process that involved battling our lovely mosquitoes during night sessions. As for the programs used for projection mapping, Diane mentioned that she purchased them from various creators across the globe. These talented individuals took the projection of their house and transformed it into stunning shows. One even used artificial intelligence to craft their programs, hinting at a future learning curve for Diane. Although they don't have control over the music accompanying the shows, Diane and Greg have their favorite scenes. They appreciate how the visuals are synchronized with the music, even if the soundtrack isn't always their cup of tea. When the Halloween season wraps up, their large character displays are disassembled and carefully packed back into their boxes, making storage a somewhat tedious task. However, the effort pays off when they see the joy their decorations bring to their community. Diane and Greg's commitment to TGO extends beyond Halloween. Their company, Mackey Home Renovations, sponsors the concert series, and they strive to give back as much as possible. Greg is also an active member of the ARC and plans to run for re-election in the upcoming year.

"I dream it and he builds it" Lastly, it's not just Halloween that captures Diane's imagination. She's already preparing for Christmas, with plans to project "The Nutcracker" onto their home along with other Christmas-themed scenes. It's clear that they are devoted to spreading holiday cheer and creating magical experiences for their neighbors year-round. So, whether you're a fan of Halloween or eagerly awaiting the Christmas season, Diane and Greg's projection mapping displays promise to dazzle and delight, showcasing the power of technology and creativity in bringing the magic of the holidays to life. Make sure to come back and experience their enchanting Christmas display when the time comes! You can enjoy their displays at 336 Harmony Lane over in Hidden Lakes.

Projection Mapping, also known as video mapping or spatial augmented reality, is a technology and art form that involves projecting digital images or videos onto physical objects or surfaces. Diane Falusi selected this hi-tech imagery to portray the halloween scenes on their home. Although she used several designers' images for this year, she plans on designing and creating her own images for 2024.

Thoughts for You to Contemplate When You Are Bored Why do they call it a "building" when it's already built? Shouldn't it be called a "built?" If two mind readers read each other's minds, would they just be reading their own minds? Why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways? Is the word "abbreviate" just a really long word for "shorten"? If a tomato is a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie? If you're waiting for the waiter at a restaurant, doesn't that make you the waiter? If two vegans are arguing, is it still considered a "beef"? If you were to cross a vampire with a snowman, would you get Frostbite? Why do they call it "quicksand" when it sucks you in slowly? If you live to be 70 years old, you will spend ten years of your life on Monday If a mime is arrested, do they have the right to remain silent? If money is the root of all evil, why do they ask for it in church? If people from Poland are called Poles, then why aren't people from Holland called Holes? Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks? If a cow laughed, would milk come out her nose? What happened to Preparation A, B, C, D, E, F and G? Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? If a spoon is made of gold, would it still be called silverware? Why is vanilla ice cream white when vanilla extract is brown? What’s another word for synonym? Isn’t it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do “practice?” Why are there no mouse-flavored cat foods? If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages? If a turtle loses his shell, is it naked or homeless? If olive oil comes from olives, where does baby oil come from? If a bunch of cats jump on top of each other, is it still called a dog pile? If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation? Do Siamese twins pay for one ticket or two tickets when they go to movies? If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happens if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it? If a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong? 68

Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Here’s a brief history of Sudoku, its origins, and the reasons behind its popularity. The puzzle’s origins can be traced back to the late 18th century in Switzerland, where a similar puzzle called “Latin Squares” was published in a local newspaper. However, the modern version of Sudoku was developed in the late 1970s by Howard Garns, an American architect and puzzle constructor from Connersville, IN. Garns created the puzzle and called it “Number Place.” He submitted it to Dell Magazines, where it was published in 1979. The puzzle gained significant popularity in Japan in the 1980s when it was introduced by the puzzle publisher Nikoli. Nikoli renamed the puzzle “Sudoku,” which roughly translates to “single number” in Japanese. The company refined the puzzle’s rules and introduced various solving techniques, turning it into a mainstream sensation in Japan.
