MANAGER’S CORNER
Dear TGO Residents,
November 1, 2024
Our fall days are growing shorter, and this weekend on Sunday morning, November 3rd at 2am we “fall back”. This is the time of year we revise our contractor hours to prevent construction work from happening in the dark. Please know that contractor hours are now officially 7am-6pm, and as a reminder, we do not allow construction work on Sundays or Holidays.
High season at TGO has officially begun! Tomorrow, Saturday, November 2nd is our Fall Garage Sale Day. The following Saturday, November 9th, will be the Artisan Market in The Manor. There are so many other activities, concerts, clubs and parties scheduled in the coming weeks and months. These community activities are a big part of what make TGO great. I hope you’ll join in and participate, and please take a moment to thank the many volunteers who make these activities happen.
CSA continues our work to keep TGO great. These past few weeks we completed the grassing phase of our golf course renovation. Now we are focused on the ‘grow-in’ phase, making sure that the new grass is healthy, pest-free, mowed and properly rooted. We are also improving cart paths and performing the detail work needed to open our course. This week we “over-seeded’ Doggie World with rye grass for our four-legged friends. This week we completed a drainage improvement project along Beehive between Windsong and Plantation. Finally, our lawn crews are working to clean up our maintenance yard and all common areas after a hot and wet growing season.
I was recently informed there have been issues with the Spectrum Mobile store at Cheney Highway accepting equipment that must be returned to Spectrum. Keep in mind this store is now mostly utilized for mobile sales and is on a first come first served basis. If the store accepts equipment, a customer would need to take a number and wait to be serviced. The best place to return equipment is the UPS store. They have a direct feed into the Spectrum system and this is the easiest and best option. They will scan it, pack it up, and return it with no fuss and provide the account holder with a return receipt for your records.
In closing, Monday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day. We have many veterans who live here at TGO. I extend a special thank you to all our veterans, for your service, bravery and sacrifice for our country. On behalf of our CSA team, we are forever grateful that you served to maintain the freedom we enjoy today.
Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

FROM THE EDITOR
The weather is starting to get a little cooler, people are coming back to The Great Outdoors, and the fun is starting to pick up!
There’s a great mix of content in this issue of The Happenings. First off is a wonderful interview with the new owners of TGO Realty, Darrin and Stephanie Huggins (p22). A huge “thank you” goes out to Tim and Cindy Clark who did all the work on this article. Interviewing, photographing, writing, and packing it all up so I could put it right into the layout.
We also have an fascinating article about the history of Veterans Day (p64) that I think readers will find interesting. I sure learned a few facts about the background of the day we celebrate on November 11. Then there is the piece about Wreaths across America that was submitted by this Gail Stairs (p34). This is a wonderful program that I wasn’t aware of at all. Thanks, Gail!
There are also a number of announcements regarding upcoming events and fun stuff to add to your calendars. Make sure you keep your eye out for them as you read this issue.
Finally, there are a few pages of wonderfully entertaining photos of the creative costumes people put together for the recent Halloween social! (p52)
Comments, ideas, suggestions, and submissions are always welcome. Please be in touch with me here: email: happenings@tgocsa.com phone: 401-286-9228

GOLF RENOVATION UPDATE - 10/24
IRRIGATION WORK
System is performing as expected. Shane is happy!!
SHAPING
The only shaping still in the works is prep work for cart paths and non-grass areas, both of which will receive coquina material.
GREENS
ALL GREENS have received sprigs and grow-in is moving along very nicely. A third round of aerifying will more than likely have been completed by the time you are reading this. Topdressing and other maintenance procedures will be ongoing, all designed to stimulate growth.
GRASSING
All areas related to playing golf have been sodded or sprigged. Now if Mother Nature continues to smile down on
us with some bonus sunshine, we might just see that light at the end of this renovation tunnel!!
IN-HOUSE PROJECTS
Still working on re-shaping of the bunker on 13. Select areas of underbrush clearing and trimming of trees continue. Drainage at some cart path low areas has been installed. Drainage work on the left side of hole #17 is being installed. We still have a lot of infrastructure work to complete to get the course ready for play.
OPERATIONS
The shop will continue to open on Saturdays from 9 to 1 for the next several weeks. Or any time you see Chuck, John or Jeff we would be happy to sell you a few items of clothing, some golf balls, range tokens or a new putter or sand wedge. The CSA office will continue to sell range tokens during the week.
The practice greens and chipping area will remain closed for now. We also ask that you refrain from using the practice tee for chipping balls back and forth.
MEMBERSHIP AND GENERAL PRICING
Information should be ready to go out by Nov 1 and should be included in the next edition of the Happenings.
Again, as the watering program continues around tee and green complexes irrigation heads will be popping up at regular intervals. They do not have eyes. If you are within range you will be doused.
The next opportunity for a live briefing with Chuck & Shane on the renovation progress will be on Wednesday, November 6th. It will be more of a question and answer session, scheduled from noon to 1 PM at the cart barn.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.
NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

ALS FUNraiser Walk
Saturday, February 15, 2025
Check-In at The Manor between 8-8:45am - Walk begins at 9:00am
My name is Debbie Grondin and this is the seventh year I have hosted the TGO ALS FUNraiser Walk. This cause is close to my heart as I lost my younger brother to this horrible disease.
At this time, there is no cure for ALS, and that’s why groups across America, like ours, are walking to raise money to support the research. Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with the disease and someone passes away from it. This debilitating disease can a ect anyone of us at any time, and that’s why we need to support the ALS Association in their fight to find the cure.
I would like to personally thank our growing list of Company Sponsors and Donors. Your support is crucial to the success of our event. Because of your support, our Ra e (immediately following the walk) will have some fantastic gifts and prizes for our participants.
We do need more support! Please help me fill up these pages with more Sponsors and Donors names and together, we will find the cure!
See you on February 15 - Thank you, Debbie

The Nature Center Christmas tree will again be at the driveway entrance, where community members can add their decorations. The tree should be up on December 1. This year, however, we have a new, fun addition to the decorations.

Meet TGO Realty’s New Owners
Darrin and Stephanie Huggins
It’s a story we all know well: a stopover at The Great Outdoors during an RV vacation leads to falling in love with the resort, staying a bit longer, and eventually buying a place. But for Darrin and Stephanie Huggins, there was a twist. Already owners of a successful real estate business back in Iowa, their casual visit to the TGO Realty office in January led to an unexpected meeting with the owner, Judy Willeke. While they hadn’t intended to buy a business, further meetings followed. “We were just curious about the resort and the real estate market,” Stephanie explained. “One thing led to another, and soon we were negotiating to buy TGO Realty.” By August 1, the Huggins’ were the new owners.
The Huggins Team, as they were known at Exit Realty Group in Muscatine, Iowa, boasts nearly 50 years of combined real estate experience. Darrin is known as a strong negotiator, well-versed in all aspects of real estate, with a calm yet direct approach that excels in bringing all parties together at the closing table. Stephanie, a Muscatine, IA resident for over 40 years, became a licensed Realtor in 2012 after working for more than 20 years as a paralegal handling real estate transactions. If any problem arises, Stephanie is quick to find a solution.
Let’s cut to the chase... we know you guys are huge college football fans. One of you roots for Iowa State Cyclones and the other for Iowa Hawkeyes. How did that come about?
Darrin: Well, neither of us actually went to those schools, but our kids did. You try to guide them toward the schools you might prefer, but they made their own choices. Still, you’re always a fan of who you’re a fan of - I’m a Hawkeye fan, and Steph’s a Cyclone fan - so once a year, we’re a house divided! The rest of the year, we root for both teams and hope they do well for the state and their communities. It’s great when both teams have strong seasons.
This year’s rivalry game was already played; it’s always the second or third Saturday of the season. Iowa State won with a last-minute field goal, making it the worst day of the year for me, but I know Christmas will make up for it!
Can you share with us how you ended up moving to The Great Outdoors?
Stephanie: We usually try to find a place to park our motor home for the winter so we don’t have to winterize it. In the past, we’ve stayed in places like Pensacola, FL; Port Aransas, TX; and Phoenix, AZ, but we hadn’t found exactly what we were looking for. Darrin loves to golf, and I enjoy being near the beach. We wanted a location that was nice, friendly, spacious, included a golf course, and was close to beaches - somewhere we’d feel right at home. So, I started joining Florida-based Facebook groups to explore options. We knew we wanted to be in Florida, and I happened to find a spot for rent here. We booked it in August, came down in October, not entirely sure what to expect.
The first time, we stayed for two weeks, then flew back to Iowa to work before returning to relax. We started out on Oak Cove Road, and those first couple of weeks were surreal - it was exactly what we’d been looking for. We didn’t even know such a place existed! Driving around and exploring all the different living options, from RV sites to houses, we realized we could tailor our setup to suit our lifestyle.
For Darrin, living on a golf course was a dream come true, and for me, being near the beach - though not too close because I’m not a big fan of hurricanes - was ideal. We just fell in love with this place.
“The MLS is mainly about increasing exposure for our listings and our clients... By showcasing our available properties and all that our community offers, we’re confident we’ll attract buyers who want to come here. This increased visibility will also support property values for our current residents, helping to keep values stable and on a steady rise compared to other communities.”
So you’re here and loving the place and decide to just up and buy TGO Realty?
SH: We didn’t know much about the real estate company here initially, but after a few months, we started thinking about getting part-time jobs - just something to keep us busy. One day, Darrin was feeling restless and wandered into the real estate office, and the rest is history.
DH: We began talking to Judy about the business in January. It took us about a week to research, search our hearts, and decide if this was truly meant for us - if it was right for both us and for Judy and Bob Willeke. We all came to the same conclusion: it felt right. Judy and Bob had been looking for the right people to take over the business for a long time. They were very hands-on and cared deeply about the community, wanting the business to continue with the same values they built over the past 36 years.
We share that vision of continuing the business with great service and great people who care about and live in the park. Plus, we’re planning to implement some enhancements moving forward.
Was it hard to leave Iowa after living there for so long?
SH: Yes, I lived there for 47 years, so it was a big decision. But for some reason, it just felt like the right move. We were both on the same page and felt it was the next step. It was hard to leave, but we knew we were doing it for the right reasons. Judy kept questioning us, but we assured her we were 100% committed.
Now you own a business with eight experienced real estate agents in one of the best kept secrets in Florida.
DH: Yes, it makes for a great start! Altogether, there’s over 175 years of experience between our real estate agents (not including Stephanie and me), and about 95% of that experience is right here in this resort. Most of them haven’t worked in real estate elsewhere - they’ve spent their real estate careers here, helping to build and grow the park, shaping its rules, giving input, and doing an excellent job. We’re thrilled with each of them and very grateful that they’ve all chosen to stay with us.
With the unique setup of this community - 19 different condos, each with similar yet distinct rules, plus CSA and ARC guidelines - it’s essential to have real estate agents who understand these rules and can guide clients through what they’re buying into. TGO is a complex property. Outside real estate agents often lack this specialized knowledge, and as a result, important details can get missed, which can lead to unexpected surprises for buyers.
What helps sell properties in this resort is that our team knows the area so well. They provide all the information a buyer needs to make an informed decision, so there aren’t many surprises.
What are some of the enhancements you plan to implement going forward?
SH: For one, we’re now a member of the MLS - Multiple Listing Service - which syndicates all of TGO’s listings to platforms like Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com. Moving forward, our listings will be distributed across 140 different sites, reaching potential buyers across the U.S. and even globally. Essentially, the MLS is a shared platform where multiple companies list properties, allowing those listings to reach a much wider audience.
DH: The MLS is mainly about increasing exposure for our listings and our clients; it doesn’t cover all the behind-the-scenes work our real estate agents do. We no longer want to be Florida’s best-kept secret - we want to introduce ourselves to everyone. By showcasing our available properties and all that our community offers, we’re confident we’ll attract buyers who want to come here. This increased visibility will also support property values for our current residents, helping to keep values stable and on a steady rise compared to other communities.
The MLS will undoubtedly be a significant advantage for your clients. What other plans do you have in store?
SH: We’re also revamping how we market our rental pool. Currently, people call in to make a reservation, but starting November 1, we’re moving to an online reservation system. Now, when people are on the road searching for nearby RV spots, TGO will show up, and they’ll be able to book online. We’ll be working with Campspot.com, which has search criteria compatible with TGO’s guidelines, making it easy for guests to find the right spot for their stay
Another thing we do is ensure our renters are aware of TGO’s rules when they arrive. We want to avoid issues like large parties or overcrowding, so we provide a handout to each renter that explains the park’s basic rules.
DH: We’re also aiming to bring back events in the rally lotnot just more rallies, but park-wide community gatherings like those that used to happen here. We’ve tossed around ideas like setting up a big screen in the rally lot for a drive-in-style Super Bowl party in February. We also heard there used to be a “welcome back” hotdog lunch, hosted and served by the real estate agent, and we’d love to revive that tradition. Our goal is to be more involved with the community. Since we live here, we want to contribute and make these events a regular part of life at the park.
You can’t just work 24-7. What do you guys like to do for fun?
SH: Darrin is a motorcycle enthusiast and has been since the age of 12. He still owns a couple of dirt bikes and rides a few races with his friends. He also enjoys golfing and can’t wait for the golf course to open up. Plus now he has taken up Pickleball - I think he’s hooked. He tries to play every morning when time allows.
DH: Stephanie is having fun figuring out what her next hobby will be. She really enjoys the natural beauty of Florida and the nature areas that surround the resort. One of her new hobbies is the Space Launches. She enjoys watching them, tracking them, and learning about them. We both love to go to Jetty Pier, get some fresh seafood and smoke it on the smoker, and watch the cruise ships come and go.
Stephanie and Darrin enjoy touring the resort in their 4-seater golf cart and showing off the park to their family, friends and potential buyers.
Have you had any surprises since moving here? Has it been an easy transition?
SH: We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how many fellow Iowans we’ve met, along with several people from other Midwest states.
DH: During our decision-making process, we asked a lot of people we encountered here about their feelings toward the park, and we were pleased to hear nothing but positive comments. We believe the park’s integrity, its offerings, and its affordability are some of its best qualities.
SH: There are the bugs! Especially those invisible ones that seem to target my ankles. That was quite a surprise!
Note: Darrin and Stephanie have seven kids between them and six grandchildren. They also have a 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Jagger. They sound like a wonderful addition to our TGO family!

Several years ago, a truckload of over 5,000 balsam tree branches was about to go to waste, but Morrill Worcester knew exactly how to put them to good use as the owner of the Worcester Wreath Company.
Worcester’s idea to place wreaths upon veterans’ graves was sparked by his patriotism and deep appreciation for those who died to protect America’s freedom. Next came help from a Maine politician who would get the wreaths placed beside graves in Arlington National Cemetery in areas that received fewer visitors each year and a truck company owner who transported the wreaths to Arlington, Virginia.
Several volunteers stepped up to help, including veterans from American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts where a small ceremony was held at the cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This remained a small yearly tradition for nearly 15 years until a photo taken at the 2005 ceremony went viral. Almost immediately, thousands of people wanted to know how to help or how they could begin a similar tradition in their states.
The Wreaths Across America story began as a smallscale event in December 1992 and has grown into a beloved international symbol for honoring a veteran’s life and service, especially given through sacrifice. Approximately 1.6 million wreaths have been placed on graves over 1,400 locations in all 50 U.S. states, and in veteran cemeteries in foreign lands and at sea. Veterans and Gold Star families are many of the roughly 2 million volunteers who prepare the wreaths, ship them across the country and put them on the graves.
If the Wreaths Across America program “sparks” your sense of patriotism, then here is how you can help. This year’s wreath placement ceremony at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery will be held on December 14, 2024 at 10:00.
1) You can attend this solemn ceremony and help place wreaths on the graves. Some of our own who were once res -
idents of TGO have been interred at this beautiful cemetery which is just north of Titusville on US Hwy #1.
2) To make donations now toward the wreaths and/or to volunteer to place wreaths, you can go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org
3) Go to Facebook at Wreaths Across America at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery to see pictures of prior year’s ceremonies.
WAA’s yearlong mission is to Remember the fallen, Honor those that serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.
NOTE: According to Senior Life (publication), “…there are other Wreaths Across America groups locally that also need donations and help in placing wreaths on the graves of veterans in all cemeteries in Brevard County.”

Many systems still rely on them for backup authentication, and cybercriminals are constantly finding ways to bypass newer technologies. That’s why having a strong, unique password for each account is crucial. It’s not just a suggestion—it’s a necessity. Although the Internet only became accessible to all in the late 90’s, it didn’t explode into a galaxy until the 2010’s – With the rise of smartphones and cloud services, the internet became portable and always on and it allowed us to carry our digital world in our pockets. It was a universe of apps, devices, and platforms connected everywhere we went, but it was baffling or overwhelming to those who had lived most of their lives with a long-corded telephone as their main means of communication.
So I started teaching Classes For Dummies in 2010, to help our community to adapt to this new frontier of communication and navigation, focusing my training and tutoring to iPhones, iPads and Mac devices exclusively, because of Apple’s closed privacy and security ecosystem, as well as their durability and simplicity for non-technical seniors.
And now today, the Internet is almost infinite, like a boundless galaxy of interconnected platforms, with AI and Machine Learning contributing to its continual expansion. Cyber threats like phishing
and hacking are ever-present in this space, making strong passwords more critical than ever. I still believe in helping guide or resolve issues with the advancing technology, but regardless of how many times I repeat it, there are still many people who deny or reject the need for secure password creation and documentation.
Plan for the Unexpected: The EZ Password Book System
In addition to protecting your own on-line accounts, have you ever thought about what would happen if you were suddenly incapacitated? Would your family or trusted individuals know how to access your accounts to pay bills or manage other important financial transactions? Relying on memory or scattered post-it notes is not a secure or reliable option.
This is where a written list, like the EZ Password Book System, becomes essential.
Having an organized, written backup of your passwords ensures that those who need access during an emergency can find it quickly and efficiently. This simple solution offers peace of mind, knowing that your loved ones won’t be locked out of important accounts when it matters most. And believe me, I’ve been called in during difficult times to help recover critical information, and I will always fail unless they have a reliable and updated system before a tragedy happens.

A SHORT HISTORY OF VETERAN’S DAY
Honoring Those Who Served
Every November 11, Americans pause to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Day holds a special place in our national calendar—it’s a day to show appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions of millions of veterans, both past and present. But beyond the ceremonies, parades, and moments of reflection, there’s a rich history behind this day that helps us understand why it’s observed and why it’s so important.
VETERANS DAY traces its roots back to the end of World War I. In 1918, after four years of devastating conflict, the Allies and Germany signed an armistice agreement on November 11 at 11 a.m.—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This moment marked the official end of what was then known as “the war to end all wars.” One year later, in 1919, President Woodrow
Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day, a time for Americans to remember the courage and sacrifices of those who fought to bring about peace. Initially, Armistice Day focused on honoring World War I veterans. However, by the 1950s, the U.S. had been involved in two more significant conflicts— World War II and the Korean War— and millions more Americans had served in the armed forces. To reflect the service of veterans from all conflicts, Congress passed legislation in 1954 to rename Armistice Day as Veterans Day, a day to honor veterans of all wars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a veteran himself, signed the bill into law, and since then, Veterans Day has been an inclusive day of gratitude for all who served.
The significance of Veterans Day lies not only in its commemoration of past sacrifices but also in its reminder of the ongoing role veterans play in American society. Veterans Day offers a moment to recognize their dedication, acknowledge the skills and strengths they bring back to their communities, and affirm our commitment to
support them. Veterans contribute to our country in myriad ways after their service, as teachers, doctors, community leaders, and mentors.
Traditions on Veterans Day include parades, speeches, and solemn observances. In many cities and towns, parades are held with veterans proudly marching, accompanied by military bands and displays of the American flag. A moment of silence is often observed at 11:00 a.m. to honor the “11th hour” when the armistice was signed. Additionally, ceremonies are often held at national cemeteries and war memorials, with the laying of wreaths and readings of names. It’s a day of pride and remembrance, bringing communities together to celebrate and honor veterans’ contributions.
Here are some important facts to know about Veterans Day:
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DATE
November 11 was chosen to honor the armistice that ended World War I, and the date has been preserved to retain its historical significance.
VETERANS DAY VS. MEMORIAL DAY
Veterans Day celebrates all who served, while Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives in service.
THE 1954 CHANGE
The shift from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” expanded the day to recognize all veterans. This change was led by a Kansas shoe store owner, Alvin King, who petitioned Congress to honor veterans of all conflicts.
NATIONAL OBSERVANCES
A formal observance takes place each year at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, attended by high-ranking officials and military representatives.
LARGEST CELEBRATIONS
New York City hosts one of the largest Veterans Day parades in the country, with participants from across the military branches, veterans’ organizations, and more.
Over the years, Veterans Day has evolved to include new traditions, including educational events in schools and opportunities for the public to learn more about the experiences of veterans. Whether it’s a local school presentation or a community wreath-laying ceremony, these observances help pass on an understanding of service, duty, and patriotism to younger generations.
As we reflect on Veterans Day, we honor the bravery, selflessness, and dedication of those who have served. Whether by attending a local event, flying the flag, or simply thanking a veteran, there are countless ways to recognize this day and express our gratitude to those who have given so much to protect and serve our nation.

Giraffes Are 30 Times More Likely To Get Hit By Lightning Than People
True, there are only five well-documented fatal lightning strikes on giraffes between 1996 and 2010. But due to the population of the species being just 140,000 during this time, it makes for about 0.003 lightning deaths per thousand giraffes each year. This is 30 times the equivalent fatality rate for humans.

1. That once you have an Approved ARC Application ALONG with the signed Completion Form returned in your file, your improvements will remain in your file for life and be considered grandfathered. That is the importance of applying to ARC for any outside improvements you are considering.
2. Your ARC application remains open until those Brightly colored Completion Forms are signed and returned to CSA. Don’t forget to turn in that form once your project is finished to avoid your application from being noncompliant.
