The Happenings 11/15/24

MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Residents,

Golf will soon return to The Great Outdoors! Our Golf Course Renovation is almost complete and golf memberships are now available. This issue of The Happenings features details about golf memberships and upcoming greens fees, found on page 13. If weather cooperates, we are targeting a Golf Grand Re-Opening celebration in early January. Shane is monitoring the course daily and his team are performing the detail work to get our course ready. He will make final decision soon on the exact opening and soft opening dates. As our re-opening activities take shape, I will keep you informed through The Happenings, in hopes that you will join us to celebrate this major accomplishment. This golf course renovation is the largest onetime investment we’ve made in our 35 years of TGO history, and it will keep TGO Great for decades to come. This is worthy of celebration!

Thanksgiving Day is also coming soon, on Thursday, November 28th. Please join us at Blue Heron as they host a wonderful Thanksgiving Day meal. There will be several seatings between 11am-2pm, so please call or stop by the Blue Heron for a reservation. Thanksgiving at Blue Heron will be a traditional plated meal with your choice of desert, and the cost is $27 per person. You’ll find a detailed menu on page 44 of The Happenings. Blue Heron will be closed for breakfast and dinner on Thanksgiving Day to allow our staff to focus on this special event, then enjoy time with their families.

Have you stopped by Blue Heron Restaurant lately and met our new manager, Tom Collins? Tom is off to a great start, preparing our Blue Heron team for the busy season, and meeting our owners to learn more about your food and drink preferences. Our next issue will feature an article about Tom and the restaurant experience he brings to us. For now, please stop by to say hello and welcome to TGO. His typical work week will be Tuesday – Saturday.

I am working on a 2nd draft of our 2025 budget. 2024 has been a different kind of year for TGO from a business standpoint. The golf course was closed for renovation beginning in mid-April, and this lack of revenue and golf traffic carried over into our restaurant operations, too. The good news is our golf course will soon be open again, and we can expect the success of our new golf course to carry over into our restaurant operations. The not-so-good news is we’re going to carry a budget shortfall into our 2025 budget. Please know that TGO is still financially solvent and strong, but we will need to work a little harder in 2025 to get back on track.

The CSA will be conducting some critter control in the evenings this Fall, especially along our nature trail and the perimeter of golf course holes #9 and #10. We are seeing wild hog damage again, and we cannot allow this damage to expand into our TGO yards and our new golf course. We will always notify the guard gate on evenings when this work will occur. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns.

This is the last issue of The Happenings before the Thanksgiving holiday. Our next issue will come out on Black Friday. On behalf of the CSA team, I wish all of you a healthy, happy Thanksgiving Day with friends and family.

Sincerely,

• Hitch Installation

FROM THE EDITOR

I’m not a golfer, but I know people who are, and they love the game. Of course, I realize that golf is a big part of life at The Great Outdoors. After all, it’s even in the name of the place!

But I can appreciate being enthusiastic about a sport or a recreational pastime. So, I was delighted to have a tour of the newly improved and almost done course with Billy Specht. He took me all around the beautiful course and we stopped several times to see what the crew was working on, and discuss how it was all going. The tour was a real treat and I have to say if you love golf I know that you really love this course! It is almost ready and I know the plan is to allow some limited play soon. So get ready because it’s almost time. I share some photos from our drive on pages 10-12.

Along with the tour of the golf course, I’ve also spent a fair amount of time over at The Great Outdoors in the past week or so. On the ninth, I dropped by to see the Artisan Market. The show filled up the Manor right out to the edges and featured artisans from all around, including several TGO residents. What a display! There was a huge range of creativity on display and, I must admit, we couldn’t get out of there without spending some money. Check it out on pages 32-33.

Then, on the tenth, was the TGO Quilters Showcase at Hobbyland. This, of course, is a residents-only group, and I have to tell you it was an impressive show! The creativity on display was wonderful, and the output truly amazing. Photos are on pages 26 and 27. If you weren’t able to attend, you missed something special.

Comments, ideas, suggestions, and submissions are always welcome. Please be in touch with me here: email: happenings@tgocsa.com phone: 401-286-9228

Errata: on page 5 in the November 1st issue Darrin Huggins’ name was misspelled as “Dan”. In addition, in the “From The Editor” of the same issue the Huggins were erroneously identified as new owners of the TGO Nature Center. We apologize to the Huggins and readers of The Happenings for those errors.

GOLF RENOVATION UPDATE -

IRRIGATION WORK

System is performing as expected. Shane is happy!!

SHAPING

The only shaping still in the works is work on cart paths and non-grass areas, both of which will receive coquina material.

GREENS

ALL GREENS have received sprigs and grow-in is moving along very nicely. A third round of aerifying will more than likely have been completed by the time you are reading this. Topdressing and other maintenance procedures will be ongoing, all designed to stimulate growth.

GRASSING

All areas related to playing golf have been sodded or sprigged. Now if Mother Nature continues to smile down on us with some bonus sunshine, we might just see that light at the end of this renovation tunnel!!

IN-HOUSE PROJECTS

Re-shaping of the bunkers on 2 and 13 are complete. Select areas of underbrush clearing and trimming of trees continue. Drainage at some cart path low areas has been installed. Drainage work on the left side of hole #17 is close to completion. We still have a lot of infrastructure work to complete to get the course ready for play.

OPERATIONS

The shop will continue to open on Saturdays from 9 to 1 for the next several weeks. Or, any time you see Chuck, John or Jeff we would be happy to sell you a few items of clothing, some golf balls, range tokens or a new putter or sand wedge. The CSA office will continue to sell range tokens during the week. The practice greens and chipping area will remain closed for now. We also ask that you refrain from using the practice tee for chipping balls back and forth.

MEMBERSHIP AND GENERAL PRICING

Information should be ready to go out by Nov 15 and should be included in this edition of The Happenings. Again, as the watering program continues around tee and green complexes irrigation heads will be popping up at regular intervals. They do not have eyes. If you are within range, you will be doused.

The next opportunity for a live briefing with Chuck & Shane on the renovation progress is scheduled for Friday, December 6th (Time and Place TBD). As announced at our Nov 14th briefing ‘Event’, we will be up and running by January but are very hopeful of some type of soft opening in December. We hope to have more concrete information at the Dec 6th get together.

It’s The Finishing Touches!

Nothing says “it’s almost ready!” like seeing the crew busily taking care of the final details of the course renovation. Recently, Billy Specht took us on a tour of the course and we saw the TGO crew busy working on perfecting the greens, tweaking some drainage improvements, planning repairs to problem spots on the cart path, and adjusting the new irrigation system.

The course looks incredible! From the iconic Lone Palm to the expansive green fairways, the TGO course is this close to being ready.

So, dust off those clubs, and start loosening up, because it’s almost time for GOLF!

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

NATURE CENTER OPPORTUNITIES!

We have opportunities for volunteer positions:

1. Public Relations

2. Inspection Team

These are both vital positions for The Nature Center. Please consider volunteering. For a Job Description or any questions, please contact Pat Dick at patdick@gmail.com

ROCKY SIGHTING!

Have you seen Rocky the Snake recently? He’s grown tremendously!! Watch for him, as he’s so large he might slither to the other side of the driveway!!

The Nature Center Christmas tree will again be at the driveway entrance, where community members can add their decorations. The tree should be up on December 1. This year, however, we have a new, fun addition to the decorations.

Did You Know...

The Nature Center has a large selection of DVD’s and books that you may borrow? Everything is sorted by categories so you can easily find the ones that interest you. And the CHILDREN’S section has a great assortment to keep your young holiday visitors busy.

NATURE CENTER MEMBERSHIP

The Nature Center dues are just $15 a year. A Lifetime Membership is also available for $500. That membership includes all relatives living in the same household.

Contact the Membership Chair, Sally Fisher, to renew or join. Sally can be reached at naturecentermembership@gmail.com.

Membership Applications are also available in The Nature Center Library. All membership dues go to the upkeep of our Nature Center building.

Funny Thing Is…

-Dr. Sammy

“Twas The Night Of Black Friday”

Twas the night of Black Friday, And all through the place People were lining up for steals, With full cans of mace.

Yes in 12 hours the doors would open, To our favorite stores and boutiques, So the revelers could seek deals, That were cheap and unique. But the first hurdle faced, Is to get in the door, Through the stampede of humanity, Who’ll try to knock them to the floor.

They’ll spend the whole night together, With talk of families and careers, Until 6 a.m. the next morning, When their smiles turn to jeers.

Yes when those doors open, It’s everyone for themselves, New friends turn to enemies, Trying to get to those shelves.

They run like there’s fire, And they gotta get out, But they’re actually running in, As they yell, scream and shout.

It’s like Jeckyl and Hyde, Going from nice to insane, Hey it’s a holiday tradition, But don’t get in their way.

And what do they find, When they get to their prize, Brands nobody’s ever heard of, And they’re all the wrong size.

Hey what about that 55” TV, There’s not one left you know, Oh those were bought by employees, About an hour ago.

So you waited all night, In that long dreary line, When you could have your TV, If you just shopped online.

So why do they call it, Black Friday anyway, Because retailers are profitable? That’s not what I’d say.

It’s because folks have gone, From good cheer to bad jeers, From being Thankful on Thursday, To a Friday fight with your peers.

TGO RETIRED FLAG COUNT: 906!

Fifty (50) more flags were removed from the box on 11/1/24 which brings our total to 906! This is an amazing total for our community. Obviously the residents of TGO know about the box and take advantage of the proper treatment of our “retired” American flags. Our patriotic flag box sits on the back porch of the CSA office near the doors to Trimmers and we deliver the retired flags to the VFW of Titusville on Capron Rd in Titusville. Thank You everyone for using the box and taking advantage of the proper treatment of our “retired” American flags.

So what about the next day? After Black Friday’s done, And the bruises are healing, And your headache is gone.

Well that’s when you look, At the credit card bills, And you suddenly shudder, And start to feel ill.

Because you maxed out your card, But you have that TV, Then suddenly realize, It was made in Fiji.

And the dishes are chipped, And iPad doesn’t fit any plug, And you got 10% off, On that uneven rug.

But fear not hearty shoppers, You have 30 more days, To return all that stuff, Before the bills need to be paid.

So I with my laptop, And you with your phone, Will have a MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone, If we just shop from home.

Apple Tips

5 SECRE TS OF FACEBOOK

That Can Actually Keep You Safe And Mildly Entertained

EVEN IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN APPLE DEVICE OR COMPUTER, THESE TIPS ARE PRICELESS!

1. The “Secret” Privacy Settings That Facebook Hopes You’ll Never Find

Let’s start with the Holy Grail: privacy settings. These are buried so deep, they might as well be in Atlantis. Facebook prefers you to think you’re safe after you hit the “public” or “friends only” option. But oh no, there’s a whole labyrinth of sneaky settings.

Tip: Navigate to Settings & Privacy > Privacy Shortcuts > See More Privacy Settings. And for extra credit, check out Activity Log, where you can see (and delete) every heart, angry face, or misplaced laugh emoji you’ve unleashed.

2. The Friend Request from “Your Long-Lost Third Cousin Twice Removed”

Ah yes, the friend requests from “family” you’ve never met, or better yet, from “Linda Smith,” who has zero mutual friends and a profile picture that screams “this is a stock photo.” Facebook is like a nightclub with a broken bouncer: anyone can sneak in, fake credentials and all.

Tip: NEVER accept friend requests from people you don’t know. Use the “Restricted List” like a VIP rope. This allows you to add people without giving them full access to your life updates. Just in case Linda Smith actually is your cousin who went on a 20-year witness protection program.

3. The Not-So-Private “Private” Messages: Messenger App Risks

Ever noticed how the Messenger app feels a little… nosy? Facebook reads Messenger interactions, theoretically for “targeted ads” and “safety,” but it could feel more like they’re keeping tabs on your crush or latest family drama.

Tip: If you’re discussing top-secret plans or—heaven

forbid—a private subject, you can use the Secret Conversationsfeature. These chats have end-to-end encryption and can self-destruct after a set time. Just go to Secret Conversation in your message options, and activate it.

4. The Curious Case of the “Hidden” Ad Preferences

Ever wonder why Facebook is so convinced you want to see 57 ads for garden gnomes after you joked about one in a single post? Facebook doesn’t actually read your mind, but it does gather… let’s say, enthusiastically, from all your online moves.

Tip: To rein in your ad preferences, go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Ad Preferences. Here, you’ll find a shocking list of assumptions Facebook has made about you. Decline any interests that don’t fit, and get rid of ad categories that feel too nosy.

5. The Legend of Deactivation vs. Deletion: The Breakup That Never Ends

We’ve all had that “maybe I’ll quit Facebook” moment, only to end up lurking back in five minutes to see if anyone liked your post. But if you do decide to deactivate, Facebook has two choices for you: deactivation (like a trial separation) and deletion (the full divorce).

Tip: Deactivation is reversible. All your data, friends, and messages sit there, quietly waiting for you to come crawling back. Deletion, however, is permanent—but tricky. Facebook gives you 30 days to “change your mind” before erasing your data.

REMEMBER: Deleting Facebook is like quitting your gym membership; It feels freeing, but you’ll probably be back in a month. For 5 more quick hacks, go to Facebook.com/ MyAppleTechKris/

Firewise - Don’t Get Burned? by Ed Brown Burns are painful, even devastating, injuries. Burns caused by scalding liquids or steam most commonly occur in the kitchen, dining room or bathroom. Most burns fall into a classification based on their severity.

FIRST DEGREE BURNS are characterized by red, non-blistered skin. Skin will peel as these burns heal. Contact with hot liquids, brief contact with a flame, or a sunburn can be the cause a FIRST DEGREE BURN. First Aid includes soaking in cool water for five minutes, antibiotic cream application and protection with loose gauze. Avoid use of ice, cotton balls and home remedies like butter and eggs!

SECOND DEGREE BURNS are more serious. They damage deeper layers of skin and are characterized by blisters, extreme redness and soreness. First Aid includes running cool water on the burn, applying antibiotic cream to blisters, pain medication and protecting with loose gauze. Hospital treatment is required for widespread area involvement.

THIRD DEGREE BURNS are the most serious. They are full thickness skin burns, often not very painful, but potentially life threatening. Cover lightly to prevent infection and call 911! In your home, first and second degree burns are most likely to be scalding burns from hot liquids. Scalding burns are the leading cause of burn related emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Use these simple safety tips around the house to keep you and your family safe from painful and destructive burn and scalding injuries:

1. Set your home hot water heater to a temperature not over 120°F.

2. When cooking, use back burners. Keep pot handles turned toward the back of the stove.

3. Use spill-resistant mugs when drinking hot liquids.

4. Test and stir all foods before serving to assure they are cool enough to eat.

5. Avoid using tablecloths that can be pulled to spill hot food.

6. Always test bath and shower water temperatures with your hand. Make changes gradually.

7. Place a rubber mat in front of your stove to prevent slipping and falling.

8. If you are eating in a chair, use a tray with a surrounding lip to contain hot spills. Every 25 seconds in the United States, a person is either burned or scalded! Be Firewise; Be Safe!
